Alternative mountain bike plan

BY GRACE CRICHTON A GROUP of Esk residents has put forward an alternate tourism plan for Mount Glen Rock.

In response to the proposed mountain bike track

by Somerset Regional Council, the newly formed grouped, dubbed ‘Care4Esk’, want to see the site turned into a wildlife and koala FRQVHUYDWLRQ H൵RUW Care4Esk member and Esk resident Darren Bate said forest regeneration and rebuilding the Mount Glen Rock koala population, coupled with cultural heritage, would provide a unique tourism drawn.

“We would bring in experts like Celine Frere who we met at the Jimna Landcare Festival, an internationally renowned koala expert, and research and study our koalas and try and build the population back up again, and then link in with traditional custodians and have cultural heritage walks and tours with gentle walking tracks,” he said.

Mr Bate said positioning Esk as a ‘koala town’ would attract visitors during the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.

Fellow members Hélène +DZHV DQG 5RG *UL൶WK VDLG the nature-tourism proposal would bring in a wider scope of people.

“We would also set up a tourist information centre and attract schools, scientists, researchers, it would be a mecca for birdwatchers,” Mrs Hawes said.

Mr Edwards said mountain bikers would only come to Esk on weekends, but eco-tourism is week-long.

“The other thing about our plan is that it would bring tourism to town hopefully seven days a week, not just on the weekends when our town is already chock-ablock full of cars,” he said.

Care4Esk members attended Somerset Regional Council’s public information evening on April 13 and ZHUH GLVVDWLV¿HG E\ FRXQFLO¶V presentation.

Somerset Regional council CEOAndrew Johnson said there were mixed emotions among the 200 strong crowd

who attended.

“This project is very much in its infancy,” he said.

‘While a draft master plan for the long-term development of Mount Glen Rock has been developed, it’s not locked in concrete and we want, and encourage, the

community to have their say so we can review and integrate feedback, wherever possible.”

“It’s also important to note that council has received in excess of 50 letters in support of developing Mount Glen Rock.”

THE COMMUNITY have until April 29 to give feedback on the draft master plan for Mount Glen Rock.

Somerset Regional Council extended the deadline for completeing the survey after the public information session held on April 13.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said all feedback from the community was important and was ‘not being swept under the carpet’.

“This proposal is a huge development for our region but we’re a long way from developing the 127 hectares of land Council purchased in 2020,” Cr Lehmann said.

The draft plan features facilities for hikers, mountain bike riders, rock climbers and nature enthusiasts.

Cyclists happy to spend, appreciate environment

VISITING cyclists welcomed the proposed mountain bike tracks for Esk’s Mount Glen Rock.

Cyclists David and Debbie Dingle and Justin and Kerry Riley were in Esk riding the rail trail over Easter and said they would revisit the town to mountain bike.

Mr and Mrs Dingle, from Central Queensland, said

they often travel for cycling holidays.

Three in the party are school teachers and cycling is what they do for fun.

“We like all types of riding, mountain biking, cycle touring, rail trails,” Mrs Riley said.

Between accommodation and meals, Mr Riley said they would typically spend

several hundred dollars on a cycling weekend.

“If we came for a weekend, I imagine it would cost $500,” Mr Riley said.

“But you’re happy to put money into a community, it just pays dividends for everybody,” Mrs Riley said.

Mr Riley said most cyclists are respectful when riding in natural environ-

ments.

Mrs Dingle said biking gave people a chance to appreciate nature.

“If there’s a fee for using the mountain biking park and you know that it could potentially go back to helping the environmental aspect within the park, people will pay that.”

Community winners in latest round of Lockyer grant funds FIFTEEN community and sporting groups will share in $40,000 as recipients of Round 2 of the Major Community Grants Program.

Attempted murder GATTON detectives charged a woman following an investigation into an attempted murder at Grantham on April 22.

Police will allege the 39-year-old stabbed a man in the neck at a house on Victor Street around 4.15am.

Police further alleged, prior to the assault, the Laidley woman has killed a cat that also lived at the house.

The 50-year-old Grantham man was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition.

Police will allege the parties are known to each other.

Detectives charged a 39-year-old Laidley woman with attempted murder, enter dwelling with intent to commit an indictable offence, serious animal cruelty and possession of a knife on Friday April 22.

She is due to reappear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on April 26.

Former Gatton councillor and industry leader passes

IT IS with regret we report the death of Allan Muller.

Mr Muller passed away peacefully last week.

Mr Muller was very devoted to his community.

He served as a councillor on Gatton Shire Council and was a former member of the Gatton Hawks Rugby League team.

Most who remember Allan

would remember him as the managing director of Mullers Industries.

Mullers Industries were suppliers to the rural industry, supplying tractors

and farm machinery, irrigation equipment and sheds across south east Queensland.

Mullers Industries originally stood on the site

of what is now the Gatton Square Shopping Centre, before moving out of town to the site of what is now the Logan Centre on Western Drive.

Mr Muller will be laid to rest Tuesday May 3 at a service at St Albans Anglican Church at 10.30am.

Arts trail added to Spring Festival ARTISTS of the Lockyer Valley will open their studios during the Laidley Spring Festival this year, as the new Lockyer Valley Arts Trail launches alongside the popular September event.

Artist Helen Richards said an arts trail for the valley has been in the works for years, and along with organiser Susan Dryden they have 20 artists on board for the trail.

The trail will include studios and galleries in Summerholm, Laidley, Plainland, Regency Downs, Forest Hill, and Gatton, including Lockyer Arts Society Inc and Lockyer Valley Art Gallery.

“So keeping it very compact, but it’s mainly around Laidley,” Ms Richards said.

“The Laidley festival goes Friday, but we’re doing Friday, Saturday,

Sunday.

“People who are around and doing the fair on Saturday, then they can come on Sunday.”

As well as established and professional artists, a combined exhibition of emerging artists is planned for Laidley.

Ms Richards said the council were supportive of the tourism potential of an arts trail in the Lockyer Valley.

“We can envision if this takes off that it isn’t just an arts trail, it could be a food and arts trail,” she said.

“People we’ve spoken to in council agree that this is what they’re wanting.

“This area is not just a place for people to pass through from Brisbane to Toowoomba, there is stuff here for people to look at.”

Gatton Lapidary Club President Leon Steinhardt said the show would feature gems, jewellery, mineral specimens, fossils, polished stones, opals, crystals and more.

“The hall is fully booked with dealers,” Mr Steinhardt said.

“Bring the kids, it’s a family day!

Moore resident Lorraine Cameron said she wanted to see action on China and foreign interference and that neither major party impressed her.

“You vote for who you want to lose and not who you want to win,” Ms Cameron said.

She said she felt disillusioned with the government and that voting should not be compulsory.

There will be obstacle course events which showcase the strength and agility of the heavy horses.

Withcott’s big day

FAMILIES looking for a fun day out in Withcott were not disappointed on Sunday.

The Withcott Family Fun Day attracted hundreds to Springbrook Park for a day of entertainment, activities, rides, and community spirit.

Withcott Progress Association president Michelle McKenzie said the turnout was ‘fantastic’.

The progress association had planned the day for last year, but wet weather forced its cancellation twice.

Mrs McKenzie said it felt

amazing to see the longplanned day come to life with the support of community and sponsors.

“The support has been something we’ve really appreciated, the community spirit behind it,” she said.

“The [ride] wristbands are as cheap as what they are because of our sponsors.

“They’ve backed us, even when things didn’t go right in WKH ¿UVW FRXSOH DWWHPSWV WKH\ still backed us, they’ve still been here, they’ve been positive, it’s been really good.”

Qld Charolais 2nd in Royal Sydney Show

BY JACOB HAYDEN BLACK DUCK Charolais ventured down to Sydney for the Royal Show, placing 2nd for their heifer and bull.

There were over 1000 head at the show, but Black Duck Charolais owner Greg Nicholson said his two head were the only Queensland Charolais at the show, and he was delighted to take home 2nd place for both.

“There’s a lot of great Charolais breeders in Queensland,” Mr Nicholson said.

“It’d be nice if a few more Queensland breeders could tackle arguably the biggest cattle show in Australia.”

The Junction View stud owner’s bull, Black Duck Rough Justice, and heifer, Palgrove Digit R1911, both placed 2nd for the 16-18 month classes.

Mr Nicholson donates cattle to the West Moreton Anglican College show team for training.

“A lot of the credit for the heifer is to the students down at the Anglican College,” he said.

“They’ve got a pretty full-

on show team down there.”

WestMAC rural operations vocational trainer and 2022 cattle show team manager Malcolm Stewart said

students were very involved with the heifer last year, breaking her in and preparing her to show standards.

“They were very proud

of the fact they had done the ground work to get that heifer to a standard that she could be shown at the Sydney Royal,” Mr Stewart said.

Players step toward pro

BY GRACE CRICHTON THE NEXT generation of women’s rugby league players are getting a head start in Gatton.

Lockyer District High School students are elevating their game by training with West Brisbane Panthers.

Coach Costa Charalambous said the school girls rugby league team went WR WKHLU ¿UVW GHYHORSPHQW day in term one to work on skills, gym work, defence, and strategy.

Four players have secured development contracts and will train with the Panthers every week for ten weeks.

“That’s one level below the NRL women’s, so it’s a big step up,” Charalambous said.

“There are a few girls who have come back from NRL women’s who are training with the girls now.

“If they want a career, that’s where it starts.”

Captain Libby Dunn, 15, is one of the players who secured a contract with the Panthers.

“It was so good, they were really encouraging,” she said.

“We can learn so much and then bring it back and teach it to the other girls.”

Rugby league players Libby Dunn and Ruby Vayro have started training with West Brisbane Panthers.

Successful ladies comp at Laidley club LAIDLEY Golf Club hosted the 2022 Ladies Classic on Thursday April 21 and Friday April 22.

Cheryl Sternberg of Laidley took out the championship with a score of 162 gross.

The event was a major success with over 70 players competing on at least one day.

Along with Laidley’s members, visitors came form 16 other clubs to play.

Gross Runner Up was Shirley Dean (Sanctuary Cove) with 164, overall nett winner was Leonie Sands (Wantima) with a score of 141 and overall nett runner up was Laidley’s own Judy Logan with a score of 143.

The club wished to thank all the volunteers leading up to and on the days of the very successful event.

On Wednesday 20th April, Gerrit Winkeler, John Greany and Lyn McWhirter went to Woodford for their Triples Day. Two seconds but a great day was had by all.

On Thursday 21st April at home we had 6 players who enjoyed a game of Triples in which Cindy Mills, John Greany and Linda Winkeler defeated /\Q 0F:KLUWHU 5REHUW *ULIÀQ DQG *HUULW :LQNHOHU LQ D YHU\ FORVH JDPH On Friday 22nd April we played host to 35 caravanners who enjoyed bowls and nibbles in the afternoon. TOWN TURNS OUT FOR HAWKS WINNING STREAK

THERE WAS a huge turn out at Cahill Park on Sunday for the Gatton Hawks’ Anzac Day games against Toowoomba Valleys.

After the A Grade rugby league team won 28-6, their Anzac jerseys were auctioned.

Full back Luke Self’s number 1 jersey fetched an impressive $1200.

Part of the proceeds from all jerseys will go to the Gatton RSL subbranch.

It was a stellar day of play for the Hawks, winning four from four.

Reserves won 56-10, U19s

won 30-0 and Women won 20-0.

Women’s coach Dominic Haak said the team performed well against Valleys, who PDGH WKH VHPL ¿QDOV ODVW \HDU “Really good defence today, not so much of an attacking game because of the wet weather but defensively we were really good,” he said.

Reserves coach Mark Swan VDLG WKH FRDFKLQJ VWD൵ DUH working well as a team and it is showing in the Hawks’ winning streak this season.
