[On] Friday 7th July my friends and I spent the morning in Gatton.
We had a lovely time shopping and continue on to Forest Hill.
On arrival there I discovered I didn’t have my mobile phone with me.
I remembered, with horror that I had put it in a safe spot in the Public Toilets in the main shopping centre. We drove back to Gatton and I was very concerned because my Drivers Licence and Debit Card were in the phone cover.

Indigenous Australian males are more likely to go to prison than go to university. The suicide rate for Indigenous Australians is almost twice that of non-Indigenous people.
Indigenous Australians make up only six per cent of Australia’s children, but they represent 37 per cent of all children who have been removed from their parents. This is unacceptable.

Voice momentum growing – don’t be left behind Australians are fair and decent people. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to recognise Indigenous Australians in our Constitution, in a symbolic and profound way.
We must work to Close the Gap. Indigenous Australians are around 55 times more likely to die from rheumatic heart disease than non-Indigenous people. This is prevent-
Just a month or so ago, the Federal Parliament passed legislation that gives the power to all of us to recognise Indigenous Australians in our Constitution. Let’s use that power wisely.
The Voice is a substantive change and a safe choice.
The Voice is not a third chamber of Parliament. It will have no veto over legislation.
Islander Voice may make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;’
Voting Yes to the Voice means giving Indigenous Australians a say on issues that directly affect them, like their health, education, jobs and housing –for real, practical improvements in their lives.
Voting Yes for the Voice will make Australia a more united country – with a fair go for all, including Indigenous Australians. Crucially, it will acknowledge in our Constitution the deep connection that Indigenous Australians continue to have with this country – as the First Nations people of this continent.
The Voice referendum presents us all with a chance to write a new chapter for the nation. Importantly, the Voice is about two things – recognition and consultation. Our Constitution has not recognised Indigenous Australians in a positive way for 122 years. We can ensure that they are recognised positively.
Comparatively recently – in 1982 – Canada recognised its Indigenous Peoples in its Federal Constitution. New Zealand reached a constitutional settlement with its Indigenous Peoples in 1840, andsentation to its national parliament in 1867.
It will not interfere with the ordinary running of the Government. Its only role will be to provide advice to the Federal Parliament and the Government of the day. Nothing more.
Once approved by the Australian people, the Parliament – and only the Parliament – will have the power to determine how members of the Voice are chosen, and how the Voice will advise the Federal Parliament and the Federal Government. It’s as simple as that.
With more than 60,000 years of continuous culture here, this invitation from Indigenous Australians to take the next step with them is compelling. The Voice is all about positioning Australia for a better future. It’s a chance for all Australians to come together to celebrate the world’s oldest continuous culture. Let’s make the most of it.

Then there is the makeup of the representatives of The Voice.

Most Aboriginal tribes were never ever connected with each other.
It seems wrong for an autonomous group of 30 or so people, representative of 3.3% of the population, to have special privileges embedded in the Australian Constitution.

I also believe that an even greater unequal sharing of tax dollars will have no effect on improving the lot of those Aboriginals that are disadvantaged.

Bill in the thousands for councillor misconduct >>
BY GRACE CRICHTON
LOCKYER Valley Regional Council was hit with a bill in the thousands for a councillor’s misconduct tribunal.
Councillor Brett Qualischefski was referred to the Councillor Conduct Tribunal for taking non-consensual photos of a woman while she was exercising at the gym two years ago.
On June 28, council received an invoice for $8,891.40 for the tribunal process from the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, of which Cr Qualischefski was ordered to pay $2,000 as one of the Tribunal orders issued on May 15.
In council’s ordinary meeting on July 18, Councillors Michael Hagan, Chris
Wilson, and Janice Holstein said they did not feel the ratepayers should have to cover the expense.
“Is Cr Qualischefski willing to pay the out-of-pocket expenses so the ratepayers don’t have to pick up that bill?” Cr Holstein said.
After a pause, Cr Qualischefski said it was ‘something he would have to consider’.
“This has come up in the last few days,” he said.
Under the Local Government Act (2009), council cannot compel a councillor to reimburse the costs of the Tribunal.
Councillors voted to request Cr Qualischefski consider making a voluntary contribution toward the balance of the invoice.
Cr Qualischefski apologised and brought up

Planning Scheme goes to public consultation
LOCKYER Valley Regional Council’s draft Planning Scheme has been approved by the state government for public consultation.
Planning Portfolio Councillor
Rick Vela said it was a major leap forward from the three current Schemes (Gatton 2007, Laidley 2003, and Grantham Reconstruction Area 2011).
“The current schemes are not only outdated but do not occurred to the Queensland Planning System over time, including the Planning Act in 2016 and ShapingSEQ Regional Plan in 2017," he said.
“The draft Planning Scheme has undergone a rigorous checking process to ensure the State Planning Policy and state interests have been connew scheme.”
The scheme will be available at the Gatton Customer Service Centre, Gatton and Laidley Libraries, and online, with consultation supported by several activities.

Future of Toogoolawah Police
BY JACOB HAYDEN
QUESTIONS continued
to rise over the future of Toogoolawah Police Station last week, after Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington claimed the station was planned for closure.
Queensland Police commitment to continuing operations’ at the station last week.
“There are no plans to close either Toogoolawah or Blackbutt police stations these stations continuing to proudly serve their local communities now and into the future,” the statement said.
Acting Superintendent Kylie Rigg said changes to the presence of Toogoolawah police was not being considered.
“There are no plans to
close Toogoolawah Police Station,” A/Supt Rigg said.
“I can assure the local community that Toogoolawah Police Station will continue to continuing to serve the Toogoolawah community.”
The announcement was welcomed by Mrs Frecklington, but she said ‘questions still remain’ whether police positions would remain at Toogoolawah.
“The information provided to me during a in early July explained that the current police positions would move to Esk, leaving the Toogoolawah Police Station without a full-time presence,” Mrs Frecklington said.
“It was simply unacceptable that they were considering removing these essential positions.
“They have been forced to commit to keeping the Toogoolawah Police Station open and I will continue to seek assurances that the substantive
positions will also remain at Toogoolawah.”
The issue was raised in Somerset Regional Council’s ordinary meeting on July 19, where Deputy
Mayor Helen Brieschke said the town was shocked by the ‘announcement’ and moved to write to Minister for Police Mark Ryan MP and Police Commissioner Katerina Carrol requesting the station remain fully operational.
“As an outlying police station, Toogoolawah Police perform an integral role during times of disaster when the town vital service with major accidents along this busy section of the Brisbane Valley Highway,” Cr Brieschke said.
“As more people move to this town we are seeing an increase in crime, social problems, homelessness and domestic violence.
“Toogoolawah as a regional centre will be disadvantaged by the lack of a police service based in the town.”

Rosewood, have your say on
IPSWICH City Council (ICC) residents are being asked what factors council should consider, including potential location, in delivering a new resource recovery centre in the city’s western region.
According to ICC, the current Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centre is more than 30 years old, operating above capacity and not suitable to meet the city’s future resource recovery needs.
ICC’s recently released Resource Recovery Infrastructure Plan included the construction of two new resource recovery centres – one in the city’s Southern region, the other in the Western region.
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee
Chair Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the location for the new centre in the western region
was yet to be decided.
“We are investing a record $70 million this resource recovery, with a major focus [on] the facilities in high-growth areas to meet the needs of our growing community, recover more resources, and reduce waste to
Deputy Mayor and Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan said the community was being asked for input on site criteria, proposed locations, and community preferences.
“It is a requirement that relevant site criteria be considered by council when planning for the new resource recovery Milligan said.

Able Australia needs drivers
ABLE Australia Lowood held an open day on Friday July 21, welcoming clients and volunteers to its site at 43 Park Street to highlight everything Able has to offer.
Acting Living Program for Seniors coordinator Rachelle Williams said the event showcased Movement to Music and services provided by the Seniors Health Hub, with the main goal of recruiting volunteer drivers.
“We’ve got seniors out there in the community who are simply not able to be transported to appoint-
ments because we don’t have drivers for the vehicles that are sitting here,” Mrs Williams said.
Able Australia Queensland acting regional operations manager Edmund McMahon said volunteers were ‘very, very stretched’.
“I literally can’t run many of my programs without volunteers,” he said.
The open day secured two new volunteer drivers, and anyone else interested in volunteering can call Rachelle on 5600 0733.

STAR Community Services is seeking volunteers to provide friendship visits to seniors in their local area.
Loneliness and social isolation top the list of main concerns for the wellbeing of senior Australians.
With the Australian population ageing at its highest rate, senior Australians are even more at risk of feeling lonely as loved ones depart and social connections disappear.
Research suggests that people aged 75 and over are the loneliest in Australia.
Thankfully, a solution to this growing problem can be found within our local communities.
STAR Community Services has launched STAR Friends, a free service providing quality social connections for older people on a Home Care Package or on the national waitlist for a Home Care Package.
The service matches friendship volunteers to the elderly
in their local area, based on their interests and hobbies with the focus on providing meaningful friendship.
STAR CEO Patsy Wilshire said anyone can become a STAR Friends volunteer.
“What’s so encouraging
about this service as a solution to eliminating loneliness is that a volunteer is required to commit as low as one hour a fortnight,” she said.
“Whether it’s university or TAFE students, parents of young children in childcare,
full- or part-time workers, and even those recently retired, we can all join in the amongst the elderly.”
Volunteers will make friendship visits to the older people in their own home.
The matched pairs can choose to enjoy any activity together including conversations over a cuppa, art and craft, music, walking, cooking a favourite meal, enjoying an outing in the community or gardening.
All volunteers will receive full training and ongoingments and schedules.
To get involved, call Jessy Byrnes on 0455 316 207 or starfriends@starct.org.au

Alongside the competitions, the LGC is also welcoming guest speakers like Jillian Coomb from Searles,
Sally Moore from Jay’s Nursery, and chef, horticulturist and festival ambassador Paul West to the venue.
LGC president Eileen Zahnow encouraged locals to get their hands dirty in the

“It’s great for the mind and great for the soul,” Mrs Zahnow said.
“I’ve been a gardener for years, and we used to enter garden competitions and won
champion garden probably eight out of ten years.”
The garden competition boasts $1,450 total prize money in Pohlmans Nursery vouchers.
The grand champion can
win $300, while category winners and runner-ups receive $150 and $75 respectively.
The garden categories are small residential, rural, environmentally sustainable,
community, and business/ school/commercial gardens.
Mr Crees said the real value of the competition lay in the promotion of the Lockyer Valley.
“Most schools have gardens, they should take pride in what they’ve done and share it with the visitors to the valley,” he said.
Prize money is also on
arrangement competition baskets, while students can enter hanging pots, recycled displays and coloured pots for prize money.
Mr Crees said the LGC was excited to promote the club and hobby, having grown from 20 members to 82 in three years.
“It’s a tourist promotion, but it’s also promoting what we’re doing in gardening,” Mr Crees said.
“Everything will be gardening orientated, it will be a glorious day,” Mrs Zahnow said.

THIS year’s Cotton Collective will feature its largest ever Cotton Trade Show at the Toowoomba Showgrounds pavilion from August 1-3.
Cotton Australia general manager Michael Murray said more than 80 exhibitors were expected, many showcasing innovation and technology not seen by growers.
“There are so many drawcards and something for everything at the show,” he said.

The trade show is part of the Cotton Collective biennial event.
The growing footprint of cotton in Australia continues

“We are hearing reports of growers in coastal Queensland locations adding cotton to their rotations and doing very well,” Mr Murray said.
“And while some areas are considered ideal because of the rainfall and temperatures,

Football Club teams will unite this Saturday July 29 for the 2023 Club Day, kicking off at 9am.
Club president Adam Halstead said 24 teams and 260 registered players would show off their progress with two thirds of the 2023 season over.
“It’s a chance for us to invite our life members, club sponsors and the public out to showcase our club,” Halstead said.
“All the teams are home and a lot of our committee and volunteers can be at the club, instead of being split up across the countryside.”
Halstead said he was excited to see how each team had progressed.
“Because I’ll be there all day, I can go around
and see the progression of the kids and the teams,” he said. off at 9am with the MiniRoos, and then our showpiece games will be the under 23 men which starts at 12:30pm or so, and premier men will be at 2:30pm.”
Halstead said the club day was a great chance for families to gather and participate in the sport together.
“A lot of families have multiple siblings playing, so it’s a good day to watch the whole family play so they’re not split up all over the place,” he said.
“Any aunties and uncles and other family members who want to come along too are welcome.”

LAIDLEY RUGBY PLAYER MAKES ORIGIN TEAM
BY JESSE HAMILTON
FORMER Laidley Lions
player Wil Sullivan has impressed on the rugby league big stage, scoring a try while representing Queensland in the U19s Origin squad at Kayo Stadium on July 13.
Contracted to the North Queensland Cowboys, Sullivan said the experience of playing opens for the Townsville Blackhawks prepared him physically for the Origin clash.
“I think it helped me playing against men in the Hostplus Cup,” he said.
“I handled the physicality well, it was more the fact that
you get to play for your state and pull on that Queensland jersey.”
Sullivan said being among the squad leading up to the clash was surreal, with Queensland Origin greats visiting the team and being part of the coaching squad.
“It was an awesome week we had Matt Gillett and Matt Ballin as our coach,” he said.
“Greg Inglis and Gavin Cooper were there as well.”
Sullivan was scouted by the North Queensland Cowboys at 15, playing as a prop, he said he has always been a fan of the North Queensland side.
“I got scouted and went
through all the academies with the Cowboys,” he said.
“I’ve always supported the Cowboys so when they gave
moved straight up here.”
