Is it time to ditch the monarchy?

As we look to celebrate Australia Day, we also hear that our patriotic celebrations are now evidence that we have moved into a contemporary society with modern values and an inclusive attitude and culture.

So the question begs to be asked, is it now time to ditch the monarchy and let Australia really come of age and become a true republic?

There continues to be a lot of talk about this especially in the wake of recent “royal rumblings” and indiscretions around the royal family.

Last time this was discussed and it went to a referendum in 1999, it was soundly defeated.

However, the whole debate became clouded by questions like ‘how will we elect the president?’ and ‘what model will we adopt?’

COVID-19 Testing in Gatton open Gatton Hospital opened a walk-in testing clinic onsite on Monday.

The Gatton Hospital Fever Clinic is the second West Moreton Health COVID-19 testing site that residents can go to if they need a PCR test or Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) kit.

Gatton Hospital continues to play a crucial role in the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Testing lines have shrunk with the changes to close contact definitions and eligibility for Rapid Antigen Tests, but you may still experience a wait during peak times.

We encourage you to bring water, dress for the weather and not arrive in the last hour of testing.

In my opinion the voting public became scared of the consequences.

In fact, it was a bit like the cure was worse than the disease if you like.

So the monarchists used this as a strategy to get it defeated.

This time let’s have a discussion and make it a simple yes or no answer.

If the answer is yes then let’s work out the model and/or the other bits like who, how, where and when at a later date.

Now is the time to have the debate, become a republic and break away from the monarchy.

As a nation we have grown up and this is the next logical step in our development as a modern, grown-up country.

Vandals wreak havoc in Grantham

The Grantham community was left fuming after vandals took to Grantham Community Parklands last week.

Graffiti covered nearly every part of the park, including the toilet block, barbecue, tables, the con-

crete floor under the shelter, sandstone benches, and the plaque at the entrance.

Gatton police officer Constable Kimberly Allen said the graffiti was reported on January 16.

“Forensic officers have taken photos and it has been assigned to an officer to follow up CCTV inquires,”

she said.

“It is really disappointing.”

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said the vandalism was senseless, frustrating, and costly.

“Council have been left to clean up in the aftermath of criminal damage… wasting

both our time and ratepayer’s money,” she said.

“Council endeavours to ensure the community has access to high quality recreational facilities, and this type of behaviour takes the wind out of everyone’s sails and takes budget away from upgrades and maintenance.”

Grace Homestead CEO ICC Citizen of the Year Zoe Knorre, Chief Executive and founder of Grace Homestead, is the 2022 Ipswich Citizen of the Year.

Ms Knorre, along with other award nominees and winners, was honoured on January 20 at the annual Ipswich Australia Day Awards.

Grace Homestead is the only long-term residential recovery centre in Queensland for mothers affected by addiction and domestic violence.

They allow mothers to bring up to two children into their program, so they can care for their children while receiving life-changing treatment.

Zoe Knorre also runs her own practice as a clinical psychologist, Engage Psychology, drawing on her experience from working in public, private and academic settings.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding congratulated Ms Knorre on her volunteering efforts and mental health services that have helped countless women, their families and the Ipswich community.

“The incredible staff at Grace Homestead teach women invaluable skills and strategies to help

them overcome trauma, that help not only the mothers but also improve their children’s lives as well,” Cr Harding said.

“I congratulate Ms Knorre as well as all the other nominees and winners in the 2022 Ipswich Australia Day Awards on their

Council seeks meeting with Ministers about NDIA Somerset Regional Council will seek meetings with relevant Government Ministers to discuss the lack of agency action over the recent withdrawal of Anglicare from respite services in Kilcoy.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said there was a real threat that some residents would be greatly disadvantaged.

In late August, Anglicare advised clients that they would have to arrange for services to be delivered to them by a different provider and at a different location.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) contacted clients or their relatives or the current and prospective providers in November.

Council’s Community Development Officer contributed to the discussions with clients and providers in Kilcoy.

“Without a replacement provider ready to step in, and without action from the NDIA, the Council officer identified ALARA Qld Inc as the most likely and best resourced provider to fill the gap,” Cr Lehmann said.

ALARA began a three day a week service from January 10 based at the Kilcoy Memorial Hall.

“I recently wrote to the relevant state and federal government Ministers about the lack of action from the NDIA in this case, and their responses indicate to me that they don’t fully understand the needs of small communities,” Cr Lehmann said.

“Council plans to meet with the Ministers and discuss the provision of respite services in Kilcoy with a view to ensuring the NDIA works more closely with Council and community in any similar service delivery issues in the future.”

Gatton Police provide Crisis Packs to assist vulnerable

Two members of the Gatton Police Station have put together Domestic Family Violence (DV) packs to help vulnerable people.

Constable Kimberly Allen said she first had the idea when responding to a DFV job in her community.

“While attending a particular DV job, it was highlighted to me that in some instances, DFV perpetrators withhold personal care items such as sanitary products as a form of control over the aggrieved,” Constable Allen said.

Constable Allen said their aim was to provide hope and dignity to women in a crisis and let them know there was somebody they could turn to.

“Ultimately the first 48 hours of leaving a DV relationship can potentially be the most dangerous, so if we can prevent them going back for the necessities of life, that’s a small win,” she said.

Hospitals prep for COVID-19

West Moreton Hospital and Health Service has made changes to prepare for the increase in seriously ill COVID-19 patients over coming weeks.

Preparations include expanding the Hospital in the Home program for the remote monitoring of COVID-19 patients who require an additional level of support, reassigning wards and redeploying staff, and postponing non-urgent elective surgeries and outpatient appointments (except cardiology and paediatrics).

A dedicated COVID-19 area has been established in emergency departments to manage suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients.

Remaining wards will continue to serve nonCOVID health needs.

Lockyer council formalises stance on health mandates Lockyer Valley Regional Council have formalised their position on COVID-19 mandates, reinforcing to the public that they must abide by the State government’s health mandates.

Part of the resolution passed by council in last Wednesday’s ordinary council meeting recognised

that Lockyer Valley Regional Council has no role in the making of Public Health Regulations or Public Health Directives and council will comply with all Public Health Directives and Regulations as required by law.

said the resolution is a statement of council’s position with respect to COVID in the public arena.

“We will comply with any mandates from the State government, we will comply with any directives,” Mr Church said.

After the public health directive announced in

November that unvaccinated people will be restricted from certain venues from December 17, Mr Church said the public called on council to take independent action.

“We had a lot of input from the public saying we needed to not follow that, we needed take indepen-

dent action,” Mr Church said.

“We can’t, “We are actually bound to comply with directives of the Chief Health Officer and those public health directives.

“It’s as simple as that, it’s the law.”

The report presented to

council said they received a significant amount of correspondence from the public stating their opposition to the vaccine mandate.

“Council has responded directly to each correspondent and also placed information on our website and Facebook page, outlining Council’s position,” it read.

The show society was successful in receiving a grant to improve the poultry shed.

The poultry shed upgrades were funded by the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal’s Tackling Tough

Time Together program, which supports community groups and not-for-profit organisations.

Gatton Show Society president Katherine Raymont said the westerly winds coming through at show time make the shed dusty and the concrete floor will also help

with water runoff.

Somerset Regional Council has endorsed changes to future strategic road plans with an emphasis on upgrading school zones.

Regional Road Group Committee representative Cr Sean Choat said planned school zone upgrades will include Coominya, Mount Kilcoy and Patrick Estate State Schools during 2022 and then Linville, Lowood High, Fernvale, Clarendon, Glamorgan Vale, Prenzlau, Kilcoy primary and Toogoolawah primary schools over 2023 and 2024.

Overweight & Obesity Overweight and obesity is a major – but largely preventable – public health issue in Australia.

In 2019, out of 22 OECD member countries, Australia had the 6th highest proportion of overweight or obese people aged 15 and over.

In Australia: • 1 in 4 children aged 2 to 17 are overweight or obese • 2 in 3 adults are overweight (36%) or obese (31%) • about 2 in 3 adults have a waist circumference that puts them at high risk of chronic disease • overweight and obesity increases with age – in 2017–18, 46% of those aged 18 to 24 years were overweight or obese, compared with 75% of those aged 55 to 64 years • those aged 65 to 74 years are the most likely of all age groups to be overweight or obese (78%) • 8.4% of the total burden of disease was due to overweight and obesity in 2015 The causes of overweight and obesity are not easy to define. Although diet and physical activity are central to maintaining a healthy weight, social, environmental, behavioural, genetic and physiological factors all play their part in contributing to weight gain. For many, weight gain is hard to avoid and very difficult to reverse.

Gaining weight can increase your risk of health problems, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. People with most of their body fat around their waist, which surrounds our vital organs, are at an increased risk.

People also often have unrealistic expectations of how much weight loss is possible. Weight loss goals should be realistic (e.g. 1–2 kg per month), and even small amounts of weight loss improve health and wellbeing.

Weight management must focus on health improvement and behavioural change rather than only on weight loss.

Lifestyle interventions are the first approach in weight management, with an aim to reduce energy intake, increase physical activity and encourage behavioural change. Interventions that manage all three of these areas have been shown to be more effective than those that address only one or two. More intensive interventions of very low-energy diets (e.g. meal replacement products), weight loss medicines and even surgery may be required if no weight loss or reduction in waist circumference is seen after three months.

“Our success in gaining grants for major road upgrades under various federal and state programs means that we have been able to shift TIDS funds to a selection of school zone safety upgrades and other projects over the next few years.

Cr Choat said council is also seeking joint funding support from the Department of Transport and Main Roads under the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme for a variety of other vital road safety improvements including proposed future works on Glamorgan Vale Road and Tallegalla Road.

Signs from the past unearthed

A piece of Gatton history was unearthed at 37 Railway St recently.

When tenants Elders vacated the shop in the main street, the signs of previous tenants were unveiled.

A sign for ‘Brian Otto’s Two Dollar Store’ was also unearthed.

The Independent spoke to Rhonda McLucas, granddaughter of shop owner Sydney Henry Hallas, and Brian Otto about the history of this Gatton shop front.

S.H. Hallas The Fruit King Sydney Henry Hallas owned and operated his store in Railway St for 50 years.

Rhonda McLucas said Sydney and his brother Major had neighbouring businesses, servicing the needs of the town.

“Major had a cash and carry grocery store and Sydney had

the mixed store with fruit and veg and malted milks, and they were side by side,” she said.

“It was a mixed business.

“Like farms back in the 40s and 50s, farms were mixed farms.

“It had a bit of everything, there would have been groceries, there would have been fruit and veg, they had milkshakes, so you could go in and get everything.”

Mrs McLucas only met her grandfather briefly.

He passed away in 1960 when she was young.

But she has fond memories of working in the shop as a teenager in the early ‘70s.

“I don’t recall my grandfather in [the store], but I worked in the shop when I was 15 one Christmas holidays with Uncle Percy,” Mrs McLucas said.

“I made malted milks and sold lollies and stuff.”

Brian Otto’s Two Dollar Store When Hallas’ milk bar closed and the shop was vacant, Brian Otto saw a business

opportunity.

Mr Otto built seven commercial businesses in the 70s and 80s, including Karl Complex and The Independent’s home at 45 North St. “I got the idea from the USA where there were one-dollar shops back then, this is in the 1970s,” Mr Otto said.

He had already established Otto Arcade, next to the National Australia Bank branch, and saw an opportunity at 37 Railway St. “I had some very good suppliers in Brisbane,” Mr Otto said.

“I was a bit of a wheeler dealer.”

He would offer a price for end-of-line products or purchased product in bulk at reduced prices to stock the two-dollar shop.

Brian Otto’s Two Dollar Store predated the dollar stores Gatton has seen since, like Crazy Clarks and Silly Solly’s.

“It was a forerunner to the Crazy Clarks type shops,” Mr Otto said.

“But the whole gimmick – and it was a definitely a gimmick – was to sell everything at $2.”

The concept was unique in Australia at the time and Mr

Otto’s was the first store of its kind in Queensland.

“I was always looking for something new,” Mr Otto said.

“The two dollar shop would have been from about 1972 until about 1976 or 7, something like that.

“It’s all part of history.”

Fresh facilities unveiled on Tradies Day Lockyer Valley Turf Club officially opened their stage one refurbishment at their Tradies Day on Saturday.

President Terry Kirkwood welcomed special guests from Racing Queensland to the event.

“It’s good to see the representatives from Racing Queensland

come out for our day,” Mr Kirkwood said.

The new jockeys’ rooms were officially opened by State Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald. “[Jockeys are] telling us that it’s one of the top facilities in southeast Queensland,” Mr Kirkwood said.

Racing Queensland’s Dan Gosewisch and Jack Wedemeyer attended.

“It’s a pleasure to contribute to the success of the race club which is putting on a fantastic event today,” Mr Gosewisch said.

The club used local tradies to complete the refurbishments.

1080 baiting shifts to subsidy program Lockyer Valley residents will no longer have council’s 1080 baiting program to help control invasive pest animals.

In Wednesday’s ordinary council meeting, councillors voted to discontinue the community baiting program and instead assist with financial contributions or subsidies for those who choose to undertake their own baiting programs.

A Lockyer Valley Regional Council spokesperson said landholders will now be required to apply to Queensland Health for a General Approval prior to purchasing 1080 baits.

Sorghum ideal summer cover crop Sorghum, sundangrass and their hybrids are popular summer cover crops.

They provide excellent protection of the soil against summer storms, are drought and heat tolerant, good at suppressing weeds and recovering nutrients from depth, and can add large amounts of biomass back to the soil.

Sorghum species are also an excellent break crop for most vegetable growers and are useful as part of an Integrated Crop Protection (ICP) approach.

Resistant sorghum cover crops are the most reliable form of break crops for managing pests and diseases.

However, sorghum species can host black rot (Thielaviopsis basicola)

and should not be used prior to beans in your rotation.

Sorghum can contribute between 4 - 14 t/ha of dry matter to feed the soil biology and build soil organic matter.

The general improvement in soil health can reduce pest and disease pressures as the more active soil biology feeds on pest and disease resting structures, such as eggs and sclerotia.

Choose a forage sorghum suited to your local conditions to ensure good growth.

If you plan to grow it for a prolonged period, look for cultivars with good regrowth potential following slashing or grazing.

Oldest registered bus in Australia

Gatton’s Jim Hill is the proud owner of the oldest registered bus in Australia.

Thirty years ago in 1992 Jim Hill purchased this 1917 GMC Bus from the Warwick Farm bus show in New South Wales.

Jim said he bought it as a promotional bus when he owned Revesby Bus Services NSW. After moving north Jim said the bus now lives its life at Gatton Bus Services, pretty much doing the same job as a promotional vehicle and sometimes does the local school formals for the graduating students.

Jim said he also likes to take it to truck and bus shows when he gets a chance to go and show the past history of busses.

Jim told The Independent a little history on the GMC. It started its life on the Brisbane wharves carrying Queensland wharf labourers to and from work.

After many years its role changed when they fitted a large steel girder to the front of the bus for the purpose of pushing rail cars all around the wharves.

For many years it sat in storage on the wharves until it was then restored for tourist purposes by previous owners and subsequently registered for this use.

this day so he can just pull it out of the shed and take it for a lap around town.

Jim Hill started his career off as a mechanic for his father’s business and as time went on moved into the truck transporting business and eventually ended up in the bus

service industry.

Jim said they are continually doing up busses at the Gatton Bus Service so he has many buses of all ages and the 1917 GMC is the oldest of them all.

Jim not only owns many vintage buses, but also has a passion for restoring vintage trucks.

Some from his collection are on show right here in the Lockyer Valley at the Transport Museum in

Gatton and a couple in NSW Transport Museums as well.

Jim couldn’t tell me exactly how many trucks he owns but said it was definitely north of 30!

It’s obvious Jim’s passion for keeping vintage busses and trucks alive is something he thrives on as I had the privilege to view his digital records of a lot of his machines and they are all so well kept it’s a credit to him for keeping the history alive.

RESULTS CRICKET B GRADE - GATTON FORDSDALE V GLENORE GROVE AT GLENORE GROVE The home side won the toss and sent Gatton Fordsdale in to bat, bowling them out for 167. A Patel (43) and S Patel (32) were the best batsmen, while N Grainger took three for 43 for Glenore Grove.

In reply, the home side reached 6/165 before rain washed out play. N Miller scored 47 for Glenore Grove, and B Hauser took 3/31. Glenore Grove won on run rate.

Helidon 9/217 v Forest Hill 6/66 Lockyer T20 Competition: Gatton Fordsdale v Mulgowie at Cahill Park 21st January.

The good crowd present appreciated Gatton’s batting after they won the toss on a pitch that had plenty of pace and bounce in it. After openers Sam Steinhardt and Aaron O’Dea put on a quick fire 57 for the first wicket, Joe Wallace and Reece Willmet followed suit as the four of them had the ball pinging off the bat.

Reece Willmett hit two extraordinary shots for six over the point/cover region off the pace bowlers. He finished up 48 n/o off 40 balls, leading a team score of 5/157 which was going to be hard to chase down. Terry Emmerson took three wickets off his allocated four overs.

In reply Mulgowie lost a wicket at 10, but Emmerson and Jared Adamski also had the balls pinging off the bat against the pace bowlers. Their 40 run partnership in very good time gave Mulgowie some hope, but after their demise and the introduction of crowd favourite, mullet sporting late call up Jacob Sudhaus, the game was all over, Sudhaus cleaning up the tail with three wickets for 18.

Mulgowie was bowled out for 115.

Next week Glenore Grove play Ropehill on 28th at 6pm at Cahill Park. Gatton Fordsdale leads the competition with 21 points from six matches.

TOOWOOMBA T20 COMPETITION Lockyer Lightning v Toowoomba Trojans at Cahill Park A combined Lockyer side, named Lockyer Lightning, nominated a T20 side in the open T20 Toowoomba comp. After three games Lockyer are 2 wins and one loss.

Rain delayed the start and the Trojans chose to bat. They were in early trouble at 2/7, with Aaron O’Dea claiming two wickets in his first over.

With the outfield damp it was tough for both the batters and the fielding team.

Kade Martin took a wonderful high swirling catch at cover. Josh Reisenleiter produced a peach of a delivery to dismiss Trojans captain Dan Pollock. Rain again stopped play after 14 overs with the score 6/76.

With time lost from rain, Lockyer was given a revised target of 61 off 10 overs, effectively making it a 10 over per side match.

Joe Wallace turn back the clock for Lockyer with some lusty blows, including two sixers to get the run rate down to 4 runs per over. But some tight bowling from Pollock and Campbell sent the game down to the wire, as Lockyer needed nine runs from the final over. Unfortunately, Lockyer took only six off the final over to finish 3 runs short.

Josh Reisenleiter said that Trojan’s bowling just strangled Lockyer batting in the last few overs.

PGA CUP FOR HATTON VALE Lockyer Valley’s own Jed Morgan and Andrew Dodt made their home clubs proud as winner and runner-up respectively in the Australia PGA Championship.

The 2021 Fortinet Australian PGA Championship at Royal Queensland Golf Club on January 16 saw a rewriting of history and the birth of a new star in Australian golf.

Jed Morgan, playing his fourth event since turning professional in October, is the youngest winner in championship history since Alan Murray is 1961.

The 22-year-old from Hatton Vale said he just wanted to make the cut.

“I know that’s a low kind of shot to shoot at, but it was all reality,” Morgan said.

“I felt a lot of pressure, especially on myself, obvi-

ously being a member here and having won the (2020) Australian Amateur here and stuff.

“I’d never imagine this happening to be honest with you.”

He may not have reached the 25-under target that he and coach Grant Field discussed on Sunday morning but Morgan did what he vowed when he led by nine through three rounds; he won going away.

His final round of two-under 69 and 11-stroke winning margin set a new mark in dominance in one of Australia’s most treasured and time-honoured championships.
