Plan for arts growth, tourism in Somerset

SOMERSET Regional Council adopted its new arts and culture strategy in their ordinary meeting on April 12.

The Somerset Regional Council Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan 2023- 2028 focuses on the strategic development of the arts, culture, and heritage in Somerset.

Somerset Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said the plan was developed with ‘extensive’ community consultation.

“This included public workshops, a tour of the region’s arts and heritage venues and landmarks and more,” Cr Brieschke said. consistent themes from the community, including the desire to see an investment in local artists and Somerset

as a cultural destination, preservation of local history, and tourism initiatives.

“We know that arts and culture play an important role in helping build identity and strengthen social networks and council is committed to providing opportunities for

further development of the arts and culture in Somerset,” Cr Brieschke said.

The Condensery, The Somerset Civic Centre, and Somerset Libraries were cultural facilities.

The future direction of the

art gallery builds on council’s 2021 decision to change the operational structure of The Condensery to focus on professionally curated exhibitions and programs to raise

Fight against Inland Rail

THE ‘SCATHING’ independent review of Inland

Rail incited discussion at Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s ordinary meeting on April 19.

LVRC senior advisor advocacy Stephen Hart said Dr Kerry Schott’s review of the project and her 19 recommendations reiterated council’s concerns.

“The government’s response, of course, was quite political as well but the fact that the independent reviewer was so scathing about the project was quite amazing,” he said.

“They do not want to consider bypasses up and down the alignment from Melbourne to Brisbane every time it goes through a little settlement, but Wagga Wagga and Gat-ly impacted.”

Mayor Tanya Milligan said council would need to ‘continually put the pressure on’.

“They’re not our friends, we need to be really mongrel-like to protect the community and that’s all there is to it,” she said.

Veteran’s contribution to lasting Vietnam memorial

IT HAS been 50 years since the 1973 proclamation of the end of Australian involvement in the Vietnam War.

One of the last Vietnam veterans of Helidon RSL Sub Branch played an important part in memorialising one of Australia’s most costly battles.

Helidon RSL Sub Branch member Les Johnson shares Robert Ridgeway’s story.

Bob was deployed to Vietnam in 6th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR).

In 1969, 6RAR was selected to accompany a team of engineers to the Long Tan rubber plantation, the site of 11 Platoon’s last stand of August 18, 1966.

There, they erected a three-metre-high, white concrete cross, and it was Bob who dug the hole.

“They complained bitterly because they believed that the Viet Cong were going to rip it out and destroy it,” Mr Johnson said.

“Some months later, they were

on a regular patrol in that area and they decided they’d go and see what they’d done to the cross.

“To their amazement, the cross was still intact.

“They had a group of prisoners come in some time later, Viet Cong prisoners.

“They were asked ‘why have you not destroyed the cross?’ and they said because the Australians look after our wounded, they help us with our sick, they look after women and children, and we have great respect for the Australians.”

Bob transferred to Helidon RSL Sub Branch in 1999.

He moved back to his birth town of Port Lincoln in December 2018.

Bob passed away on December 17, 2022 at 75 years old.

Mr Johnson said it was imaccount.

“Now he’s passed, that story’s got to be preserved so we understand the real history,” he said.

KDHS shares its stories

KILCOY District Historical Society’s (KDHS) Hall of History at 39 Hope St, Yowie Park, has opened its doors to the public for the Australian Heritage Fesitval, sharing oral history recording of prominent past Kilcoy residents.

KDHS president Donald Walker said the life and times of residents were captured in both video and transcript by the society since 1998, along with 3,000 photos from the early 1900s.

“We had a lady in who was doing research on her great grandmother… she had never seen photos of herable to show her and she was quite emotional,” Mr Walker said.

“That’s where we get the pleasure, being able to help people discover their family history.”

Oral recordings feature past residents Des and Sam Webster, Ida and Grace Pratt, Ken and Isabel King, Muriel Gray, Bertha Cumner, Bessie Walker, Peter and Betty Retschlag, Rose Pratten, Richie Frisch, Archie and Mary Pointon, Ken and Iris Kuhn, Kath Runge and Ossie Kruger.

PREPARE yourself for a night of frightfully good fun at Village of the Doomed on April 29.

The Spirit of the Valley Event festival takes over the Laidley Showgrounds from 6pm.

Event organiser Idell Wadley said Village of the Doomed was a celebration of all things creepy and macabre, done in a very tongue-in-cheek fashion.

“It’s a really great night of alternative fun, where people can come along, they can dress up, they can explore their spookiness, and just enjoy the evening in a safe and non-judgement environment,” she said.

The night is full of entertaindancers, ghost stories and magic shows.

“Celebrated crime and paranormal author Jack Simm will be attending with his hearse and telling ghost stories in a dark little shed in the back of the showgrounds,” Mrs Wadley said.

Gene Maru from Miscreant Workshop will be there with his

one-of-a-kind, horror and fantasy themed wearable art and costume accessories.

There’s plenty of treats to tantalise tastebuds on sale, including dessert and wine bar ‘Sweet Revenge’ where you can get a blood or plasma transfusion – a glass of red or white wine.

Village goers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the night and dress in costume.

There iss $50 prize money up for grabs for the best senior and best junior costume, or try to win the best blood curdling scream or best death scene.

The night gets a little darker after 8pm, so parental discretion is advised.

“We cater for children until 8pm,” Mrs Wadley said.

There’s nothing too sinister but and the belly dance performances that are after 8pm are all a little bit darker, so it’s up to the parents to decide.”

Discounted presale tickets can be purchased online until 5pm Friday, visit the Facebook event.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate.

Raising awareness of prostate cancer

THE IPSWICH Prostate Cancer Support Group and the Fernvale Lions Club will hold a prostate cancer awareness meeting at the Fernvale Community Hall on May 3 at 7pm.

Fernvale Lions Club member Colin Moore said prostate cancer was a disease everyone should be aware of.

“It’s not just an older man’s disease,” he said.

“I’m told now that the youngest diagnosed person with prostate cancer is six years of age.”

Mr Moore encouraged both wives and girlfriends to attend the information meeting.

“We’ve found that men will often not talk about these things, but their partners will prompt them to seek treatment,” he said.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer related deaths among men.

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR PREP

HERE are some simple things you can do to help your child transition smoothly to school life:

1. Encourage independence by helping your child to complete tasks on their own - things like getting dressed, brushing teeth, and recognising and packing their belongings. Opening their

lunchbox, unwrapping food items, and putting their things away is also helpful.

2.

praising your child’s efforts and encourage them to try new things.

3. Develop social skills and oral language by arranging playdates with other children and encourage them

4. Establish regular routines to help your child develop a sense of the structure they will experience in the classroom.

5. Introduce your child to letters and numbers through play-based activities such as counting objects and singing the alphabet song.

LAIDLEY-based author Jim Nicholls was busy promoting his two new books, ‘Speaking of Trains’ and ‘Tales of Travels and Trains’ at a book signing at Lockyer Valley Libraries on April 20.

Mr Nicholls said his two new titles should entertain anyone interested in travelling to distant places.

“This is not your usual, loving touristy book, it tells it like it is and imparts some little-known facts in history

that might entertain and interest people,” he said. Mr Nicholls said the book featured stories based on real experiences he had while journeying on trains. “It’s not just about the trains, and it’s not full of technical boring stuff, it’s more about the travel,” he said.

“If you’re writing about trains, you need to write on trains to get the background you want.”

Withcott Family Fun Day opens gates for round 2

THE WITHCOTT & District

Family Fun Day is returning to Springbrook Park, Withcott on Sunday May 7 after in 2022.

Withcott & District Progress Association Inc. president Michelle McKenzie said the event had no trouble the same level in 2023.

“We have such good support from our community businesses and we really haven’t had any problem trying

because they want to give back to our community,” Mrs McKenzie said.

“I think that’s something that’s so important.”

The day runs from 10am to 2pm, with free live entertainment indoors and outdoors.

“We’ve got some fantastic attractions for families that are free, we’ve got two free clown shows throughout the day and local dance groups from the Lockyer Valley and Toowoomba,” Mrs McKenzie said.

Indoor stage entertainment includes JE Dance House, Lockyer Valley Highland Dancers, Radiance Academy Toowoomba, Move & Groove Gatton, Dance Central, Sing Australia, and Mayhem Dance Academy.

Meanwhile, Maggie Moo Music and Nathan Wamsley will provide entertainment outside while Rollo the

Clown roams the event.

Mrs McKenzie said this year’s activities catered to all ages.

“There’s something for everyone, it’s not just something for little kids to do and the teenagers are bored,” she said.

“We’ve tried to make it family-friendly so there’s something for everyone to get involved in.

“We’ve got three extra activities on an adult-teenager scale.”

Visitors (including parents) must purchase wristbands for access to various activities, ranging from $10 to $20.

Green wristbands ($10) grant access to balloon twisting, face painting, pony

rides, petting zoo, trackless (under 90cm), and archery attack (10yrs+) and archery with targets (U10s).

Blue wristbands ($15) grant further access to bubble soccer (10yrs+), junior safari park (under 14), and gladiator

Purple wristbands ($20) grant further access over blue bands to the wrecking ball (95cm+), crash course (100cm+) and the ninja wall (100cm+).

On top of the activities, the Family Fun Day will have

food trucks, market stalls, and information stalls for various community groups.

“[The community stalls] get to showcase the Upper Lockyer and what we can do and what we provide the community in our area,” Mrs McKenzie said.

Heavy Horses show off their strength

THE 44th Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day returns to the Gatton Showgrounds on April 29 and 30.

The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day has attracted record nominations from 144 horses and 80 competitors this year who will compete across a wide range of events including ridden classes, classes in the plough ring, events which will see the heavy horses restored horse drawn vehicles, and obstacle course events which showcase the strength and agility of the heavy horses.

Long time supporter, competitor, and president of the Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day Neil Hall said there was no better way to spend the May Day weekend.

“The Gatton Heavy Horse Field Day has been a success for so many years because of the quality of the competitors, the links to our country’s history, and

the educational experiences just as importantly, the

good old fashioned country hospitality and fun that is

together some healthy competition, great food and drinks, a talented performer

and a crowd,” he said.

While the Field Days are mainly dedicated to the

working of heavy horses, this in turn makes for the perfect show and spectacle for the general public to attend and to watch the skill of the heavy horses which played such an instrumental role in the making of Australia’s history.

The classes in the main ring will be complimented across the two days with an extensive programme of classes and demonstrations outside the main ring including farrier competitions.

The event is solidly supported by the local community and as a result of sponsorship, hard working volunteers and a progressive committee the look set to be an important feature on the heavy horse calendar for many years to come.

Further information is available on the event’s Facebook page and website where tickets can also be purchased prior to the event.

Farmer’s home, heart, and passion

A SIXTH-generation farmer at Cressbrook Station, Caitlin McConnel follows a rich family legacy but at the same time is shaping her own impact on the Queensland’s future agriculture industry.

A Senior Associate at AusCaitlin also works remotely from the property to support her parents in the day-to-day

management of the family beef cattle operation and succession planning.

She said despite the challenges that come with living on an inter-generational farm, ‘it is the place in the world that has her whole heart’.

“In my experience rural, regional, and remote women tend to ‘get on with the job’, and rarely have time – or feel

-

tions to family, community, and the agricultural industry,” Caitlin said.

“As a result, many are reluctant to share their personal or professional stories, because they view what they do on a day-to-day basis as simply ‘what they do’, and therefore not worthy of

sharing.

“The contributions that rural, regional, and remote women make – no matter how small – are invaluable, and should be shared and celebrated openly, freely, and often.”

Caitlin shared her story as part of Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s (RRRW) Network 30-year celebrations

in 2023, having joined the organisation’s board last year.

“My professional success is due to the incredible community of women in agriculture who have supported and championed me throughout my career,” she said.

“I have, therefore, always endeavoured in my extra-curricular pursuits or personal time, to ensure I am provid-

ing similar opportunities for women in agriculture.

very foundation upon which RRR Women was established.”

Caitlin is also Chair the Future Farmers Network and a member of the National Farmers’ Federation Young Farmers’ Council.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

APRIL 24-30, 2023 ARIES

communicators and masters at multi-tasking. But things could go haywire this week as the planets disrupt your preconceived plans. Don’t let it deter you! Mars (your patron planet) links up with intrepid Uranus, so strive to be more adventurous, as you grab opportunities with both hands. Be inspired by birthday great, actress Shirley MacLaine: “Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. It’s where all the fruit is.”

TAURUS

The Sun conjuncts the North Node (in Taurus), which is fabulous for taking bold new ideas and incorporating them into your professional plans for the future. Destiny is the creative with the practical, the better the long-term outcome will be. But with Mercury still in retrograde mode (in your sign) there’ll be some stumbling blocks along the way. So do your best to be a patient and adaptable Bull.

GEMINI

Venus is visiting your sign, so you’ll be at your gregarious Gemini best. You’re keen to have fun but, when it comes to a problematic relationship, resist the tendency to be superthe surface than meets the eye. Mercury is retrograde, so slow down, observe, listen and learn. In the words of writer (and birthday great) Harper Lee: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view.”

CANCER

This week could be confusing so slow down and get your bearings before you proceed. Aim to get the balance right between socialising with other people and spending quality time on your own. Shine a spotlight on your aspirations for the future. Are they an honest now? If you have an ongoing problem that’s bothering you, look to a work mentor or a wise friend for some well-chosen words of advice.

LEO

Beneath a deceptively calm exterior, you’ll feel rather restless this week, Cats. The planets imbue you with a sense of urgency and you’re keen to activate an ambitious project. But self-discipline and gradual, structured modiand there’s still plenty of background work to complete. It’s also important to do your best to get the balance right between your professional/public life and your personal/private life.

VIRGO

Mercury (your ruler) is retrograde until May 15. So things won’t run smoothly – eseducation or travel. So throw your obsession with perfection out the window! If you adapt to changing circumstances and accept mistakes and misunderstandings with good words of Virgo entertainer Beyoncé: “If everything was perfect, you would never learn and you would never grow.”

LIBRA

Mighty Mars is charging through your career issues this week. Intense concentration, careful listening and calm compromise are the keys to drama-free relationships. But –with Mercury reversing through one of your big ticket items (like a house or a car), sign business contracts, apply for a bank loan or lend money to others. Instead, be a patient Libran and wait.

SCORPIO

This week retrograde Mercury could confuse communication in romantic and platonic relationships. So be careful you’re not viewing people through ridiculously rose-coloured glasses. If you’re attached, are you and your partner on the same page? If you’re single and looking for love, be cautious. Make sure you can differentiate between a dream date and a disappointing dud. When it comes to a close friendship, it’s time to get real and face the facts.

SAGITTARIUS

A romantic partnership or a creative joint venture looks promising, as long as you are realistic about what you can bring to the opportunities are around. But you need to work out the perfect time to strike (and don’t be afraid to ask others for help). Plus avoid

to a successful colleague for some astute business advice.

CAPRICORN

This week you’re keen to help, but do other people require your well-meaning assistance? Remember Mercury is in retrograde mode until May 15. So be careful you’re not just being

yourself with a fractious friend or a cranky colleague on your hands. Praise and encouragement will always get you a lot further than criticism, no matter how ‘constructive’ it is.

AQUARIUS

With powerful Pluto now transiting throughdow. Change, elimination and transformation are the new norms in your life. So businesses need to innovate, communities need to be creative, people need to pivot and astute Aquarians need to be very adaptable. So your motto is from comedian (and birthday great) Jerry Seinfeld: “If life boils down to one thing, it’s movement. To live is to keep moving.”

PISCES

Saturn (in your sign) forms a positive aspect with the Sun on Tuesday, so it’s a good timedently. But Mercury is retrograde, so pace yourself and – if in doubt – don’t hesitate to times and travel details. Your motto for the week is from birthday great Barbra Streisand: scale, and you need both. They balance each other out.”

the tryline to tie up the match 6-6. That was the half time score.

The Hawks had to dig deep against the resurgent Eagles and four tries in the last 13 minutes secured the home win for the Hawks.

It was a nice turnaround for the home side after their loss to the Roosters the week before. Joel Brett won the player of the match and the Hawks welcomed back Regan Wilde who was superb. Captain Haydan Lipp picked up a double. Whilst Blake Appo also made a successful return from injury relishing playing at the back. The Eagles rebounded well after heart breaking loss to the Danes last round and will be a force as they adjust with their roster.

THE HAWKS DOMINATE IN ANZAC ROUND THRASHING

THE GATTON Hawks A grade side served up an oldschool belting to thrash the following a solid second-half performance at Cahill Park on April 22.

The Hawks started the contest having to dig deep in defence, with the Eaglession in the game’s opening quarter.

A sneaky dummy and run play opened the home sides account, with the Hawks also denying the Eagles a certain try before the the half.

the Hawks scoring four tries

Gatton Hawks A grade coach Nicky-John Harch said of the team sticking to their game plan when the scores were tight at halftime.

“We knew the points would come if we stayed patient, as we spoke about just staying patient at halftime, and that’s the result,” he said.

In an earlier match at Cahill Park, the Hawks reserve

a mixed performance that showed plenty of promise.

The Hawks responded well after a slow start to score two quick tries from kicks and trail the eagles by eight at the break.

The home side fought back piece in the second half but ended the match in disappointing fashion by conceding two late tries.

Reserve grade player and coach James Schroeder said the side showed promise after a poor opening.

“Once we came out of the sheds, we were a bit more switched on and came out with a bit more intensity, but towards the end there, it just fell away again,” he said.
