Anthony Albanese will be our next Prime Minister.

The only thing that remains to be seen is whether he will govern in his own right, or if he will join forces with the Greens and Independents to form a government.

Nationally, it seemed to be the longest campaign in Australia’s history.

We have waited for the date to be called then endured a six-week campaign.

So, the question must be asked: is it time to JR WR IRXU RU ÀYH \HDU À[HG WHUPV" At the present time governments and opposition parties appear to be waiting for the election date to be called, and I think that is costing us good government.

I know I will have readers asking questions relating to bad governments and how do we get rid of them if they are doing a bad job.

Those of us that can, will remember November 11, 1975 when Gough Whitlam and the Labor Government were sacked by the then Governor General Sir John Kerr.

The state governments have tranVLWLRQHG WR À[HG WHUPV DQG VR KDYH our local councils, so why are we still waiting for Federal Elections to be called at the whim of elected repreVHQWDWLYHV" Anthony Albanese is guaranteeing to make change, let’s see how far he is prepared to go.

:KHUH·V WKH ÁRRG PLWLJDWLRQ" ANOTHER ÁRRGLQJ HYHQW has once again devastated the Lockyer Valley and still QR VLJQ RI ÁRRG PLWLJDWLRQ work.

As a survivor of multiSOH ÁRRGV LQ /DLGOH\ DV D business and homeowner, I have heard promises of ÁRRG PLWLJDWLRQ IURP DOO levels of government from the Governor General down to local government.

I have had the current leader of the LNP Queensland as part of the Campbell Newman government stand in my business in Laidley in August 2013 DQG SURPLVH WKDW RXU ÁRRG mitigation work was due to start in 2014.

All that Laidley has seen is a pair of very expensive signs in the main street.

Over the past eleven years we have seen hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on expensive studies etc done by expert engineers and the like and to no avail, still nothing done.

Ask any farmer, business, or homeowner what should be done.

We have all witnessed ULVLQJ ÁRRG ZDWHUV IURP RXU own front doorstep.

We all have our own opinions as to what should be done.

Farmers have been building their own levee banks for years.

Our state government is only too keen to spend billions on Olympic infrastructure over the next ten years, but this will RQO\ EHQHÀW WKH 6XQVKLQH Coast, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.

As I write this, we have had our obligatory visit by politicians and public servants with their media circus in tow.

They have seen the devastation and I suppose there may be more promises made, but only time will tell if these promises will be as empty as the rest.

All I ask is that some

VHULRXV ÁRRG PLWLJDWLRQ projects get started across the state, not only the Lockyer Valley, as there is a danger of these towns/ regions dying.

We do not need any more losses of life, livelihood, or family wellbeing.

It is time to make some real changes for the betterment of these communities.

No more empty promises. *DU\ 'HQLVH /DLGOH\ 0DLQWHQDQFH OHIW ZDQWLQJ AMALGAMATION has proved to be a dismal failure for the Lockyer Valley.

Supposedly amalgamation of councils was to reduce costs however it seems to have also reduced maintenance and the ratepayers representation.

We now have not enough councillors to cover such a large area and too much of their time is spent attending functions and the promotion of good news stories.

For the last two council elections we were promised honesty and transparency, this has not happened.

Almost every decision by council is now decided in secret closed meetings where ratepayers have little or no input.

Perhaps it’s time that the council admitted where it is failing and take the steps to remedy.

I was recently told by a councillor that their main job was Strategic Planning.

Wow! I thought we elected them to represent the ratepayers and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the residents.

It is not good enough to wait for Government Grants, our rates are supposed to cover general maintenance costs before new developments and fancy pamphlets. *OHQ 3HWÀHOG *DWWRQ

Labor swings in to government Scott Buchholz MP has retained the seat of Wright, held since 2010.

Scott Buchholz will retain the seat of Wright for the Liberal National Party with RI WKH ¿UVW SUHIHUHQFH votes and 60% of the two SDUW\ SUHIHUUHG YRWHV Shayne Neumann will retain the seat of Blair for the Australian Labor Party with 36% of the ¿UVW SUHIHUHQFH votes and 56% of the WZR SDUW\ SUHIHUUHG votes.

These numbers could still FKDQJH DV DW WKH WLPH RI SULQWing less than 70% of votes have been counted, however a change of members is unlikely.

2I WKH WZR SDUW\ SUHIHUUHG votes Blair had a 4.6% swing towards Labor, while Wright had a 4% swing to Labor.

Shayne Neumann MP said the Labor government had made a lot of commitments locally and nationally.

Orange you glad for the SES

BY JACOB HAYDEN IN AN ACT of solidarity with local State Emergency Services members, the region’s residents participated in Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) as part of National Volunteers Week.

Forest Hill, Gatton and Laidley SES members gathered at Bunnings Plainland on Wednesday May 18 where they were gifted with food DQG JRRGLHV E\ VWD൵ Bunnings previously donated three wheelbarrows, gumboots and sandbags to

the SES teams in preparation for the May rain event.

Lockyer Valley SES deputy local controller Graham Wade said Bunnings does a fantastic job, not only in the region but state-wide.

“I’d like to give out a massive thank you to Bunnings

in general for how they’ve been looking after us in the Lockyer Valley, which enables us to then provide even more assistance to our local community,” Mr Wade said.

“We won’t ask for support, but we’re always happy to receive.”

Mr Wade said the SES are always looking for more volunteers.

Mackenzie Yarrow has been with the Gatton SES group for over a year and is part of the swift-water crew.

“It’s rewarding knowing you’re giving people a

helping hand when they most need it, and you don’t ask anything in return,” she said.

Sixth year Forest Hill member Natalie Millar could not agree more.

“Joining the SES was probDEO\ WKH EHVW PRVW IXO¿OOLQJ thing I’ve ever done.”

Wild dogs on the move during breeding season

WATCH OUT, wild dogs are on the move.

Somerset Regional Council has issued a timely reminder to remain alert for wild dogs as the pests start to move ahead of their breeding season.

Somerset Pest Management Committee member and councillor Sean Choat said wild dogs threaten

livestock and domestic pets.

“Rural residents in particular need to keep an eye out to protect their livestock from these savage pests,” Cr Choat said.

“We are reminding pet owners in rural and peri-urban areas, in particular, to ensure their yard is securely fenced and to

bring domestic animals inside at night or put them in a kennel outside to keep them safe.

“Another sound practice for keeping your sheep, goats and chickens safe is to lock them in a dog proof enclosure of a night to ensure their safety to prevent predation of a nighttime.”

Cr Choat said mature

dogs were currently on the prowl looking for mates, and young dogs are looking for a place to set up their own home range or den area, away from the pack they were raised with.

“Landholders should also look at varying the times they allow livestock, including goats, sheep and chickens, to graze and

forage, as wild dogs will observe and wait for the ideal opportunity to attack,” Cr Choat said.

Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke, also a member of the Pest Management Committee said it was important for residents to remain alert to avoid the unnecessary loss of livestock or pets.

“Signs there may be wild dogs in your area include howling and domestic dogs barking late at night or prior to dawn,” Cr Brieschke said.

Five men arrested over $1.7M cannabis operation DETECTIVES seized cannabis plantations worth an estimated street value of $1.7 million from two rural properties in the Lockyer Valley on Wednesday May 18.

Crime and Intelligence Command’s Drug and Serious Crime Group detectives, with assistance from the Ipswich Tactical Crime Squad and Laidley police executed a search warrant at a Brightview rural property.

The search found four greenhouses containing 4,581 cannabis plants, hydroponic growing chemicals, irrigation and machinery.

Police also seized 28 kilograms of dried cannabis.

Five men aged between 21 and 46 were arrested and charged with producing and possessing dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of a crime.

Catherine is currently studying at the University of Queensland, working toward a dual degree in maths and secondary education.

“In that time I think I would really like to go abroad, now that’s becoming a lot more available,” she said.

“If you’ve always thought about submitting a proposal but haven’t yet done so, this really is the perfect chance to plan for your exhibition in 2023,” Cr Hagan said.

“I am looking forward to seeing what exhibitions we can showcase in 2023 and the range of differ-

ent works that will be on display” Gatton artist Carol Fletcher said the gallery is a beautiful venue.

“I would encourage local artists to support the Lockyer Valley Art Gallery,” Ms Fletcher said.

“I have enjoyed exhibiting my own art there and attending many diverse exhibitions held there over the years.”

Foothills Art Show returns to Valley

BY JACOB HAYDEN ARTISTS, photographers and sculptors from across the region will showcase their work at the Lockyer Valley Foothills Art Show this weekend.

The ‘Life in Rural Australia

Art Exhibition’ will hold its opening night on Friday May 27 at the Postmans Ridge Pioneer Memorial Hall with a pastel workshop by Gail Kerr on Saturday and markets on Sunday.

Lockyer Valley Regional councillor Janice Holstein said the art show was cancelled the past two years due to the pandemic.

“We’re really excited that it’s back this year,” Cr Holstein said.

“It’s an absolutely fabulous

event, lots of fun, you get to look at wonderful art from local artists, have a drink or two, and enjoy the canapes.

Cr Holstein thanked the event’s major sponsor Stanbroke, as well as Tasmanian artist Josie Birchall for featuring at

the show.

“The Lockyer Valley arts community has been incredibly welcoming and inclusive, and I am very appreciative for the wonderful opportunity to be able to exhibit my art,” Josie said.

“Events such as the Foothills Art Show are an agency for people to gather together in a positive environment and share their ideas, experiments and stories in the form of art.”

Women’s fellowship for 75 years ANY group achieving the longevity of three quarters of a century is to be commended.

The Women’s Guild of Immanuel Lutheran Church Ropeley celebrated its 75th anniversary on May 22 with welcome guests and a luncheon.

Annie Hoger was a foundation member and now her daughter, Shirley Reimann, carries on her legacy.

“I wonder if all those

lovely devoted ladies who were foundation members of our guild even thought that 75 years on some of their descendants would be celebrating this milestone anniversary,” Mrs Reimann said.

Twenty-one women came together on May 25 in 1947 to form the ladies’ guild.

At the second meeting WKHUH ZHUH ¿QDQFLDO PHPbers, who paid a one-shilling annual membership fee.

Although the 2022 membership is smaller, with six current members, the guild is

strong.

President of West Moreton Zone Shirley Klinge commended the guild on their dedication over the years.

“A big congratulations to you for all the work you’ve done over the many many years,” she said.

“Ladies of Ropeley, continue your faithful meeting even though you are small in number.”

Pastor Jing Luan said the congregation will celebrate its 100th anniversary in February next year.

Forget your troubles at great night out

BY GRACE CRICHTON MURPHY’S Pigs’ concert in Esk on June 4 is not only a great night out, it is also going to support local community groups.

Band members John Graham and Peter Vincent said the band was keen to bring music to regional areas and wanted the town to get on board.

“We can’t play and sell beer at the same time,” Mr Vincent said.

“We thought it was a great way for the community groups to come on board and raise money at our functions,” Mr Graham said.

At the Civic Centre concert on June 4, Esk Lions will EH ¿ULQJ XS WKH EDUEHFXH serving hamburgers, bacon and egg rolls, and the classic snags on bread.

The band, with 12 musicians, four dancers, and

three crew members, plan to bring more shows to regional towns after a successful gig at Woodford.

“When we found out how well it worked at Woodford, we thought crikey, we could take this to other regional

towns,” Mr Graham said.

Mr Vincent said bringing entertainment to the country was a good way for locals to leave their worries behind for the night.

“Country people like going out on a Saturday night, forgetting about the week, forgetting about the fact that it hasn’t rained for two weeks, or that is hasn’t stopped raining for two weeks,” he said. ³$OO WKDW VWX൵ WKDW WKH\ do in their daily lives, they come to one of our gigs and it disappears.”

Their fusion of Celtic and rock music utilises 34 instruments, from guitar, EDQMR DG ¿GGOH WR DFFRUGLon, keyboard, and of course bagpipes.

But the ‘secret weapon,’ as Mr Graham described them, is the multi-award winning Cape Byron Celtic Dancers.

He promised people come away from their concerts thinking it was a show like no other they’ve seen.

Bugs Ed came to the school to teach the grade sevens about pinning, insect idenWL¿FDWLRQ DQG WKH IXWXUH RI insect cuisine.

stir-fried crickets, meal worm with spaghetti, cricket tacos, deep fried stink bugs, and cicadas.

Students tried for themselves a roasted meal worm with chocolate and chocolate chip cookies made with meal ZRUP ÀRXU “Generally, once they get over the initial ‘ick’ factor and just give it a go, almost everyone loves it,” she said.

Science teacher Gareth Whittaker said the workshop was part of their unit on the study of insects.

Commitment and trust key to 50 years BILL and Kathryn Hallas celebrated their 50th anniversary on May 6, surrounded by friends and family.

They were married at Wavell Methodist Church in Brisbane on May 6, 1972.

Communication is key to their marriage.

“You truly have to love one another, you have to respect each other, you have to work together, and you have to communicate,” Bill said.

Kathryn said it was all about teamwork, commitment, and trust.

Bill and Kathryn met on a bus tour of Tasmania in 1969.

Bill was two days away from turning 20, Kathryn was 18.

“We built a house within RXU ¿UVW \HDU RI PDUULDJH DQG ZH MXVW VHW DERXW SD\LQJ LW R൵ and establishing ourselves,” Kathryn said.

Kathryn taught home economics at the high school, Bill was a cattle auctioneer.

They had three children, Laura, Andrew, and James.

Kathryn went back to work when James was old enough to go to school and taught at the high school until her retirement. “[I worked] to make sure that we could provide them with all the things that they wanted, and their education for the future,” she said.

Andrew in particular wanted to spend as much time with his dad, Kathryn said.

“Andrew was always with Bill, down the yard and with

the cattle,” she said.

“They were inseparable.

“Andrew would only cry when he couldn’t go with Bill, otherwise he was with him.

“James was our sporting one, we spent a lot of time taking him to all sorts of VSRUWLQJ ¿[WXUHV FULFNHW soccer.

“He gave us great pleasure because he was chosen for a lot of regional and zone teams.”

Bill’s parenting philosophy is to not force his own interests on his children.

“Out of the three kids, Andrew’s the only one that knows anything about cattle, and that’s what life is all about,” Bill said.

“It’s no good saying ‘you’ve got to learn’ because if it’s not in you to learn something, you won’t learn it, you can’t.

“You can’t make somebody learn something just because you know it.”

They now have seven grandchildren.

“If you live long enough, life’s reward is grandchildren,” Kathryn said.

“That is where you really can have fun and just love them, but you haven’t got the full responsibility.”

BY JACOB HAYDEN THE ANNUAL Shepherdson & Boyd Weaner Show and Sale is on this Friday May 27 at the Toogoolawah Saleyards.

Contribution to trucking is personal

BY GRACE CRICHTON DARREN Nolan was awarded the Don Watson Memorial Award at the National Trucking Industry Awards on May 6.

The Nolan’s Interstate Transport director said it came as a shock.

“I wasn’t expecting to pick up the award,” he said.

“But it was a nice shock, it was a nice surprise.”

Darren has worked in the family business for nearly thirty years.

“The rule of our business is that you have to work outside of the business before you work in the business, that was my dad’s rule,” he said.

He travelled and studied and worked before joining the company.

The recognition was significant for Darren.

“It’s quite personal because , ZDV DW WKH YHU\ ¿UVW 'RQ Watson presentation that they gave and I remember thinking to myself at the time, one of these day I hope I get that,” he said.

The Australian Trucking $VVRFLDWLRQ ¿UVW SUHVHQWHG the Don Watson Memorial Award in 1995 and it is awarded it to an individual who has given ‘conspicuous service’ to the industry.

“As a company, Nolan’s are involved in a lot of industry events,” he said.

“We spend a lot of time travelling and trying to do our bit to make our industry better.”

Mr Nolan has served on the board on Truck Safe.

“No one puts their hand up and says this is what they GR \RX MXVW À\ XQGHU WKH radar, so it was a very nice surprise.”

Laidley Indoor Bowls Club enjoy their weekly social outing.

Indoor bowls weathers the storm

BY GRACE CRICHTON THERE aren’t many sports that you can play rain, hail, or shine.

But indoor bowls is one of them.

That’s just one appealing factor for the Laidley Indoor Bowls Club, who meet weekly for a friendly match at the Laidley Cultural Centre.
