Equine precinct gets green light

The proposed Equine Precinct in Gatton is nearer to reality after Lockyer Valley Regional Council moved to endorse the business case for the project last week.

The proposed precinct at the Lockyer Valley Turf Club would see a multi-use facility built, with potential to host a range of equine activities like dressage, show jumping, polo, in addition to a redesigned racing track.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Deputy Mayor Jason Cook said the endorsement of the business case was another step forward in bringing this world-class equine facility to life.

“The prospect of a multi-use racing and equine precinct right here in the Lockyer Valley is an exciting

step for our community, and one that as a council we are really excited about,” he said.

The project is a collaboration between Lockyer Valley Turf Club, Lockyer Valley Regional Council, Racing Queensland, Equestrian Queensland, and the University of Queensland.

Gatton was identified as an ideal site for a training facility for its position close to Brisbane, Toowoomba, Ipswich, and the Sunshine and Gold Coasts.

Cr Cook said the construction will benefit the wider community outside the equine industry.

“This would be a first in Queensland to dedicate an entire facility to equine integrating racing, equestrian tourism and community activities.”

Planning for the precinct has been in the works for

several years, and Cr Cook said it is a needed asset for the region and was planned before the Brisbane 2032 Olympic bid.

“Regardless of whether the Olympics come or not, we need this,” Cr Cook said.

“Gatton needs it, the Lockyer Valley needs it, Equine Queensland and Racing Queensland need it,” Cr Cook said.

“But if the Olympics come along, beauty, it gives us an avenue to get funding to kick it off.

“Then leading up to all those Olympics, they’ll come here for training, and a lot will come here two years in advance.”

be an iconic centrepiece to overlook the entire site and provide administration and function activities.

Brisbane 2032 Games bring infrastructure, tourism to regional Qld

The 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games have potential to bring improved infrastructure, connectivity, tourism and industry opportunities to regional Queensland.

The bid for the Brisbane Olympics, spearheaded by the South East Queensland Council of Mayors, was a catalyst to speed up infra-

structure for the growing region.

Hosting the Olympics was a way to speed up projects, like high-speed passenger rail and road networks, that were already on the table.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said Brisbane securing the games is not just about one region.

“We’ll have better connectivity, better infrastructure,” she said.

“We have a really great opportunity for our agriculture, business and industry to provide a destination and also to feed athletes and visitors,” she said.

Visitors to the games will be looking for destinations to visit, Cr Milligan said.

Afghanistan leaves vets wondering

Tee off for a good cause this Friday at the Daffodil Day Golf Day. The charity day, sponsored by Elf Realty and Gatton Florist, coincides with Daffodil Day and all proceeds will be donated to Cancer Council Queensland.

This is the second year Gatton Florist owner Rianna Harm has helped with the event, joining forces with husband Brock Harm of Elf Realty.

Although participants in 2020’s golf day were less than expected due to COVID, the event raised a significant amount.

“I think it was still very successful, we raised about $3000, that includes the daffodils I sold,” Mrs Harm said.

“The raffle blew me away, people were just so generous, all the prizes on the day were donated.”

Mr Harm has co-ordinated golf days in the past and the charity holds a particular significance for him.

“His dad is the main reason he does what he does,” Mrs Harm said.

“His dad passed away from cancer and my aunty passed away from cancer, everyone has someone.”

According to the Cancer Council nearly 150,000 Australians diagnosed with cancer every year, so most people have been touched by the disease.

In 2019, former Cancer Council Australia CEO Professor Sanchia Aranda, said funds raised through the Daffodil Day Appeals go toward funding cancer research.

Recycled water keeps club green

Recycled water from Urban Utilities is helping the Lockyer Valley secure an enviable reputation as home to some of the best soccer grounds, despite the ongoing drought.

The Gatton Redbacks Soccer Club uses an average of 120,000 litres, or around three backyard swimming pools, of recycled water each day when irrigating their fields.

Urban Utilities spokesperson Anna Hartley said recycled water was highly treated wastewater that could be reused for a range of activities from irrigation to construction.

“Recycled water is used across our service region to irrigate farms, golf courses and sporting fields like the Gatton Soccer Club,” she said.

“It’s not only delivering benefits to the community, but also helping reduce demand on our precious drinking water supplies.”

Warren Ford from the Gatton Redbacks Soccer Club said without the regular supply of recycled water from Urban Utilities, games would have been cancelled due to drought.

Urban Utilities’ recycled water has helped keep the Gatton Redbacks Soccer Club’s grounds lush and green.

“We cater to players of all ages and grades, from five-yearold junior players to senior men and women’s teams and the recycled water has allowed those competitions to continue,” he said.

“The quality of the water is top notch, it’s rich in nutrients and we see the grounds instantly green up when we use it.

“We get lots of comments from other clubs saying these are the best grounds in the competition, so it definitely gives you some pride.”

Ms Hartley said Urban Utilities supplies around 6900 megalitres of recycled water to customers every year.

“While we’re always looking for opportunities to increase our

supply of recycled water to our communities, each connection is assessed on a case-by-case basis,” she said.

“Whether it’s fit for purpose, how far customers are from our treatment plants and what infrastructure needs to be built to connect are some of the things that need to be considered.”

Council provides update on Laidley Spring Festival Lockyer Valley Regional Council, in consultation with community event organisers, has decided to cancel some aspects of the 2021 Laidley Spring Festival.

“As we know only too well, the threat of COVID-19 to the community and subsequent restrictions and snap

around possible snap lockdowns,” Cr Milligan said.

BUSTED: Drink drivers, speeding

It was a ‘disappointing’ weekend for Laidley police as numerous infringement notices were issued.

Snr Sgt Regan Draheim said he would like to remind people to take care on the road and obey the rules.

“Police will continue to conduct enforcement and take action against drivers who don’t obey the road rules,” he said.

A 23 year old female from Ipswich was detected travelling 139km/h in a 100 zone on Mulgowie Rd. She was issued an infringement notice for using her phone while driving. The driver provided a positive roadside breath test and was taken to Laidley Station where she provided a reading of 0.161%. The driver’s licence was automatically suspended and she will appear in Gatton Magistrates Court.

A 46 year old male from Glenore Grove was intercepted and provided a positive roadside test before being taken to Laidley Station where he provided a reading of 0.217%, The drivers licence was immediately suspended and he will appear in Gatton Magistrates Court.

Police intercepted a motorcycle travelling at a 123 km/h in an 80 zone on Laidley Rosewood Road, The rider, a 50-year-old Laidley man, was issued an infringement notice and his licence was automatically suspended.

To the Editor I write in response to the recent letter in your paper on 11 August from the Member for Blair.

The claims made were simply false. The notion that there is not enough vaccine is complete rubbish. The Morrison Government has secured millions of doses of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and recently secured 25 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

We have enough vaccine supply for every Australian who wants to be vaccinated, to get vaccinated.

At time of writing, more than 16,000,000 doses have been administered and some 50% of Australians over age 16 years are protected with at least one dose.

At time of writing, we have just had a record day of vaccination, with more than 300,000 doses administered.

The Morrison Government is getting on with the job of securing our economic recovery, putting the instruments in place to protect lives and livelihoods, and delivering the vaccine rollout so we can get back to normal.

Every step of the way during this pandemic, the Labor Party have done nothing but undermine our efforts. We see it again in Mr Neumann’s recent letter – no bipartisanship, no offer to work with us for the good of the nation and he didn’t even call on Australians to get vaccinated. Pure politics.

Wellcamp was suggested and rejected as a quarantine facility because no one in the Labor Party produced the hard facts required for its serious consideration. The Wagners would have made it happen, but the Qld government dropped the ball and were then indignant when the Federal Government chose another site.

Shayne mentioned Morrison’s failure to secure enough vaccines, however, we have all heard of how both Astra Zeneca and Pfizer have been discarded because of vaccination hesitancy, and also because, while Covid wasn’t rampant in the community, we had the luxury of “wait and see”. This is not failure on Morrison’s part, but rather personal choice of the individual. Now that it’s a clear and present danger, everyone is rushing to get the jab and millions of vaccines each week have been procured by the Federal Government.

Sadly, many jobs and businesses have been lost due to the pandemic, but it is the individual State Premiers that are responsible for lockdowns, border closures and preventing travel and holidays to tourism places in other states. The Palaszczuk Government has proved the most ruthless of all, exacerbating an already perilous predicament for many businesses. It would be great to see political point scoring put aside and all levels of government work together through the pandemic for the best outcome for all Australians. If we are all in this together, the finger pointing blame game needs to stop and we all need to work towards a positive solution.

Calls to fix regional roads The Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) has revealed the worst roads in Queensland by Electorate and Nanango is the second highest region for road fatalities so far this year.

State Member for Nanango, Deb Frecklington said the statistic were ‘heartbreaking.’

There have been 10 fatalities on Nanago roads this year, second only to Callide with 11 fatalities.

“It seems like each time you see the news, there has been another fatality, or serious accident in our region,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“And we have to remember that these statistics only count the people who have lost their lives. There are many more who are injured and incapacitated in these accidents and who will endure a lifetime of suffering.”

Mrs Frecklington said she has been continually asking for road funding for the region.

It’s clear Labor prefers to invest in key infrastructure projects throughout in the southeast region and coastal towns, neglecting to invest in regional routes such as the Flinders Highway, Landsborough Highway and the Barkly Highway.

RACQ has revealed the worst roads in Queensland, Nanango is among the worst.

Robbie Katter, leader of Katter’s Australia Party, said the Labor Government is neglecting regional roads.

“But the response is always the same from Labor - our regional roads are not a priority and there is no funding,” she said.

Katter’s Australian Party Leader Robbie Katter also said Labor is ‘neglecting’ regional

roads.

“It’s clear Labor prefers to invest in key infrastructure projects throughout in the southeast region and coastal towns, neglecting to invest in regional routes such as the Flinders Highway, Landsbor-

“All of these routes if given minor upgrades would majorly increase the safety for road users and freight operators alike.”

Homework help for Qld students

Some Queensland students will now have supervised homework sessions after school as part of the state government’s free homework centres.

Glenore Grove State School is one of 120 schools across the state who received funding to roll out the program.

Principal Renée Heathwood-Brunskill said the sessions, which started last week, give the students an opportunity to get some extra support.

“We thought it would be a good way, especially for those students who we think need a little more support around learning to read, they

can come and engage with a professional facilitator to help them,” she said.

Students can come to one of three one-hour sessions.

Along with the head of department of curriculum and the support teacher for literacy and numeracy,

Mrs Heathwood-Brunskill sees which students will be attending each day and arranges activities for them.

“We’ve talked to the classroom teachers if they’ve identified anything they want us to address,” Mrs Heathwood-Brunskill said.

“We’ve got some littlies, preppies and year ones, who we’re really focussing on reading and tricky words.”

The state government is investing $8 million over four years to fund the centres in state primary and secondary schools.

“Our new free homework centres will provide a supportive, supervised environment for students to complete their homework,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Children can build good study habits and families can spend quality time together without any pressure to supervise homework.”

Gatton RSL marks Vietnam Veterans’ Day Last Wednesday marked Vietnam Veterans’ Day, when we remember and pay tribute to the brave men and women who fought in the Vietnam War and the Battle of Long Tan. Originally known as Long Tan Day, Vietnam Veterans’ Day on 18 August is a day to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australians during the Vietnam

War. This year is the 55th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, which is generally regarded as one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers during the conflict.

More than 60,000 Australian defence and civilian personnel served during Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War over 11 years between 1962 and 1973.

Vietnam veterans have gone on to make a significant contribution to the ex-service and wider Australian community, helping secure many veteran support services, including the Vietnam Veterans’ Counselling Service (now known as Open Arms).

Mulgowie’s Legacy of Sports Mulgowie’s sporting history continues with the annual Mulgowie Gift, taking place this year on September 4 and will coincide with the Mulgowie Hotel’s 130th Anniversary Celebrations.

The foot race dates back until at least 1990, according to the Queensland Athletic League’s list of winners, but sport in the region goes back to early settlement days in 1880s.

Donations destined for regional Africa

An ambitious project to help rural Africa has come to fruition, with a shipping container full of medical aides, educational supplies, and home goods ready and waiting, destined for Arusha in Tanzania.

Organised by the Lutheran parishes and facilitated by Tanzanian Terevael Aremu Nassari, the drive received an outpouring of support from businesses and individuals.

Lutheran youth leader Cedric Paech said he would like to thank all the people who donated and give an update.

“Everything is ready to go, we’re just waiting for a slot on the ship,” Mr Paech said.

There were also numerous donations from individuals of bikes, stationery, desks and chairs, clothes, shoes, and more.

In the farming areas around Arusha, access to basic supplies is difficult.

Parishioner David Klinge said many of the goods donated would have been destined for landfill but can now be put to good use in a community lacking basic school and medical supplies.

“The volume of goods that are discarded, medical, educational, all discarded because they need to be upgraded, what do you do with the

old stuff?” Mr Klinge said.

“You think of the waste that our society has, it really is terrible.

“We’d like to see the kids going into school carrying laptops or riding their push bikes.”

Mr Paech said while the process was difficult at times, the end result is very satisfying.

In the long term, especially if you’re using a computer for work, it is worth the extra money to buy a suitable computer and save yourself time and money down the track.

For families who need multiple computers for their children in school, buying quality refurbished is a more afforable option.

“You’ll get a 12 months warranty, just like you would on a new model, and a quality refurbished model will have a back up of parts,” Meachelle said.

“It can save so much money.”

It can be the difference between paying $1500 for a new laptop or $600 for an equivalent quality refurbished one.

There is no one-size-fitsall when it comes to buying a computer, so be sure you know what you what out of it and make a purchase that’s going to be right for you.

Fairways Park officially open The highly anticipated Fairways Park at Kensington Grove officially opened to the public on Saturday.

Families came to experience to multi-million dollar park and its many features.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said having an all-abilities park in our region was a major asset.

“This is a wonderful moment for our region and recognises the growth we are seeing here in the Lockyer Valley,” she said.

“We are proud of the significant community input into this project and look forward to it being well utilised and enjoyed by all ages and abilities,” Mayor Milligan said.

The park boasts a learn to ride course with imitation road signage, pump tracks, dog park, nature play elements, shelters, barbecues, amenities, and a multi-ele-

ment playground.

With funding support from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, and from the Palaszczuk Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package, Fairways Park is now ready for community use.

Keep Australia Beautiful highlights single danger Last week’s Keep Australia Beautiful campaign highlighted the problem of plastic waste, in time for Queensland’s ban on single-use plastic on September 1.

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once, ending up in landfill and harming the environment.

“We’ve already seen the enormous benefits of the lightweight single-use plastic shopping bag ban, with surveys showing a 70 per cent reduction in all plastic bag litter since the bag ban began in 2018,” Ms Scanlon said.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann supported the initiative, saying residents should take every opportunity to support grass-roots campaigns and state government programs aimed at eliminating harmful and unnecessary single-use plastics.

“Most of the states and territories have implemented deadlines

for banning single-use plastic items, with Queensland’s ban beginning 1 September 2021,” Mr Neumann said.

“Sadly, up to half of all plastic on our coasts comes from packaging and single-use plastic.”

Mr Neumann was also critical of the Morrison-Joyce Govern-

ment, saying they have failed to deliver recycling infrastructure or implement stewardship measures and Commonwealth procurement targets, which were promised by December 2020.

“Local residents in this region are living with the fallout of years of neglect in the war on waste.”

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign brings an emphasis and reminder to all Australians around the importance of looking after Australia’s environment.

“Every day we should be keeping Australia beautiful, but this is a campaign that brings this into emphasis,” he said.

“This year, the focus is on single-use plastic that often end up as litter and I encourage everyone to swap out the throw away items for reusable or refillable alternatives.

“A small change can make a real difference.”

The ban includes single-use plastic items like straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates and unenclosed bowls, expanded polystyrene cups and takeaway containers.

There will be exemptions to ensure Queenslanders with disability or healthcare needs can continue to access necessary items.

Auto dealer support franchising reform The peak body representing Australia’s new car Dealers has welcomed the release of the federal government’s discussion paper on Automotive Franchising reforms.

The paper will specifically investigate the merits of a stand-alone code, options for mandatory binding arbitration and the need to extend existing protections to other automotive franchisees.

Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) CEO James Voortman said it is a significant step in reforming the imbalances between dealers and some manufacturers.

“We believe this provides an opportunity for our industry to come together and build on the progress that has been made towards a fair and reasonable set of rules that govern relations between dealers and manufacturers,” he said.

“You need only look at the Holden and Honda Dealers who are currently involved in protracted court battles with their franchisors to understand why the current system favours larger multinational corporations over Australian businesses,” Mr Voortman said.

The paper also flags extending the automotive franchising regulations which have been put in place over the past year to cover other categories including truck, motorcycle, and farm machinery dealers.

Rural Fire Brigade Open Day confirmed After being forced to postpone due to the recent COVID restrictions, the Lockyer Waters Rural Fire Brigade has confirmed their open day will go ahead on Saturday September 4.

“We are always looking for new members and the local community is always welcome to come to our meetings and to our open day,” she said.

First Officer Michelle Gooch said anyone looking to gain

knowledge on fire safety and how best to protect their properties during the summer should attend.

“We will be providing information on what people need to protect their homes for the fire season and people can have a chat to us if they want to organise somebody to come around and have a look at their properties to help them work out how to fireproof them,” she said.

“We’ve also done some pretty extensive renovations to the station, so this is obviously a chance to open it up and let

Calls to fix labour shortage Australia is still 24,000 workers short to fulfill the labour needed for harvests, according to Hort Innovations.

Phase 2 of the ‘Seasonal horticulture labour demand and workforce study’, commissioned by Hort Innovation, indicates that that the peak casual labour supply gap could range from 11,000 to 24,000 workers in early 2022.

According to AUSVEG, government support in increasing the number of people from the Pacific Islands to come and work on

Australian fruit and vegetable farms is hugely important to ensure the industry has the workforce it needs to harvest, pack and distribute fresh produce.

AUSVEG National Manager Tyson Cattle said more than 10,000 workers have arrived since the initiative began in July last year, but it is not enough.

“AUSVEG has been strong supporters of the programme and it’s worrying to think where the industry would have been without it,” he said.

“However, despite its suc-

Quarantine capacity and costs continue to be a challenge, with some growers paying more than $3000 per

“As industry we continue to urge governments to look at ways to increase its quarantine capacity and to look at all options to support the vegetable and potato sectors that still require harvest labour,” Mr Cattle said.

Growers urged to fill out lost crop register The lack of labour across Australia available to producers of fresh fruits and vegetables continues to result in lost crops.

Industry body AUSVEG is urging growers to complete the National Lost Crop Register survey to help with their ongoing advocacy on labour.

The register asks for crop, value and location details, including postcodes.

Growers are encouraged to make multiple entries to the register over time as new losses are realised.

Losses recorded in the register should be only those experienced as a direct result of not having access to enough labour to pick or pack all or some of your produce.

This can include those losses resulting from not being able afford enough labour at wage rates inflated by the current lack of labour.

The National Lost Crop Register has been designed and developed by Growcom and endorsed by the National Farmers’ Federation Horticulture Council.

Futsal kicks into gear

A former Gatton teacher is bringing the popular indoor soccer game of futsal to Gatton with plans to build the sport across the state.

Chris McLeod was appointed South West Queensland Director of Futsal for the Australian Futsal Association (AFA) and wants to kick off the league in Gatton and Toowoomba.

“Where better to start than in Toowoomba and Gatton, as a former teacher and coach at Lockyer District State High School, the Lockyer District has always had many good players and families involved with the game,” Mr McLeod said.

Starting in term 4, the game is open to all ages ‘from 8 to 80.’

“There is some great talent in the Lockyer and there’s now an opportunity for all players of all ability levels to experience futsal,” Mr McLeod said.

The AFA is the biggest futsal organisation in the country and is established in every state, and Mr McLeod plans to grow the sport starting with Gatton and Toowoomba.

“Once we get the regional centres established… then the intention from there in the next 18 months is to have something as far as Stanthorpe, as far west as Roma, Cunnamulla, and

Kingaroy way,” he said.

Going back around 15 years, Mr McLead said the Toowoomba futsal comp had up to 120 teams and he is optimistic the club can reach these numbers again.

“Toowoomba and Gatton are the first bases to make sure we get good centres,” he said.

“It will quickly grow over 18 months to that 120 mark.”

The competition also offers the opportunity to pursue chances of competing at State and National Club and School competitions for the registered players.

For those who might not be looking to take their skills to the national stage, Mr McLeod gives some good reasons to get involved.

“You’ll make some new friends, you’ll have a lot of fun, and you’ll get fit at the same time,” Mr McLeod said.

“It’s cheap, it’s accessible, and it can be played every day of the year because the weather won’t impact on it.

“There’s something for everyone.”

The AFA will be at the Gatton Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday August 28 to take registrations and answer questions from walk in customers wanting to know about the game of futsal and the term 4 competition.

Numbers for the first season are strictly limited and will be based on a first in first registered basis.

Community sport resumes Following days of no COVID-19 community cases, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the early easing of restrictions for community sports this week.

The announcement comes just in the nick of time for many community sporting clubs that were weighing up whether to write off their seasons entirely this past week.

President of the Junior Gatton Hawks Rugby League Club Sandy Nolan was thrilled with the an-

nouncement.

“It is very good news, we have madly scrambled to get some games happening for our juniors in Gatton this Saturday,” she said, “We were half hoping it would happen, so we had some game times pencilled in ready to go just in case it did.

“We will have a full round of junior games from age six to twelve which means they will all get to finish their season and those in the finals we get to play them too.”

Ms Nolan said that the

Women’s senior side are also due to play their game at Warwick this weekend as well as the Under 18’s and reserve grade side.

“I think the Women’s side need to win to be able to keep their minor premiership,” she said.

Lowood Bowls Club Treasurer, Karen Brown, said the easing of restrictions is great news for their club.

“It means we can play bowls this Saturday and start bringing some money back into the club,” she said.

Anti-swooping tape for BVRT users

Somerset’s Visitor Information Centres along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) are stocked with a trial bird deterrent tape ahead of magpie season.

BVRT users may obtain the tape for free as a trial to deter magpies and birds during the upcoming breeding season, occurring through August to October.

Somerset Economic Development and Tourism Committee representative Bob Whalley said “We’re happy to provide the new

holographic tape to BVRT users at our Fernvale, Esk and Toogoolawah visitor information centres to assist with deterring magpies.”

CRICKET BUSH BASH LEAGUE POSTPONED

The 2021 T20 Darling Downs Bush Bash League was forced to postpone due uncertainty caused by to the latest COVID-19 restrictions.

League co-coordinator Kent Reimers said the postponement is not a cancellation at this stage, and players, stakeholders, and sponsors are hopeful the event will happen.

“If it’s to go ahead this year, we will need to see a decent gap in the cricket calendar,” Mr Reimers said.

“If something else doesn’t go ahead that might leave us a five-week gap, then we’d look at cranking it up.”

Mr Reimers said part of the reason to postpone is the league draws in players from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

“That was probably the biggest factor in us postponing, about 30% of our players will be from those regions, which means we have to consider their COVID restrictions too,” he said.
