On another note, Gatton

Council is receiving correspondence from members of the community, expressing their dissatisfaction with the Queensland Government’s proposal to exclude unvaccinated people from certain venues from 17 December.

Council appreciates this is both a topical and personal issue and has written to the State Member for Lockyer requesting that he take community members concerns directly to the Premier and members of Parliament.

The Local Government

made the national TV this week in a round about sort of a way. For those who watched the ABC drama series ‘Total Control’ last Sunday night, fictitious politician ‘Jack Ramsay’ mentioned that before politics he had been to Gatton College.

It was certainly a blast from the past and for a TV series set and filmed in the Western Queensland town of Winton, for Gatton to get a mention on national TV was really quite refreshing and shows the history associated with our local campus.

Association of Queensland has recently undertaken a survey of Councils regarding the State Government COVID-19 proposals, in which one of the questions was: l Should the mandatory vaccine policy for Queensland Government-owned galleries, museums and libraries also apply to council-owned galleries, museums and libraries?

Lockyer Valley Regional Council answered no to this question. Council has no intention of imposing a similar

mandate to that proposed by the State unless it is required by legislation and Council has no choice in the matter. Council is obligated to follow legislation when it applies to Local Government.

Our Council is immensely proud of how the Lockyer Valley community has navigated this lingering global pandemic and it is our hope we can continue to remain united and move forward, together.

Manufacturing boost for Mulgowie Mulgowie Farming Company will undergo a $5.1 million expansion with funding from the federal government.

The funding was part of the latest round of the $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative, to support Australian-made food and beverage companies.

Mulgowie Farming chairman John O’Hara welcomed the government’s investment in manufacturing and food innovation and said he was proud of the partnership.

“The Mulgowie Farming Company team thank the government and Scott Buchholz for working with industry to create jobs and increase production of world-class products, and for choosing Mulgowie Farming’s operations to be enhanced under the Modern Manufacturing fund,” he said.

“This partnership and investment will improve our processing capability and capacity which will result in greater supply of Mulgowie Farming’s sustainably grown fresh nutritious vegetables for Australians and international consumers to enjoy.”

COVID-19 changes require the need to prove you’re vaccinated

BY SAM DANIELS Since November 17, people may be required to show their vaccination certificate on the Queensland checkin app.

Staff at venues are encouraged to ask customers for proof of vaccination and

have been told to contact police if customers refuse.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said venues should display the rules for entry.

“If people do not comply there will be enforcement action and as you know that enforcement action

amounts to $1,378,” Commissioner Carroll said.

What if I have a medical exemption?

Those with a medical exemption must be able to verify this via a medical contraindication issued by a registered medical practitioner, either by a paper or

electronic version.

Ms Palaszczuk said the changes are both a reward for the fully vaccinated and a precaution for when the borders open and we will see more cases in our community.

“People deserve to know that they can go to these

places and that they are safe,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“A vaccinated person is 86 per cent less likely to contract COVID and are 90 per cent less likely to die.”

A Somerset Regional Council Spokesperson said they support the new initiatives from Queensland

Health associated with the roll out.

“As we receive updates and information we will share this information with the community through media releases, social media platforms and the various networks that Council works within,” they said.

Waste not: Organic waste diverted from landfill Since its roll-out in August, the Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) waste collection trial in Gatton and Laidley has collected 83 tonnes of organic waste as of November 15.

Selected residents within the townships were supplied with green-topped wheelie bins for the 12-month trial to divert organic waste away from landfill.

Lockyer Valley Deputy Mayor and Waste Portfolio Councillor Jason Cook said there is less than six years’ capacity remaining in the Gatton Landfill.

“When that site is full, waste will need to be transported some distance, at greater cost to ratepayers, to external landfills,” he said.

“We needed a solution to decrease the amount of waste at the Gatton Waste Facility,

and this trial was the perfect answer.”

Lockyer Valley is one of three local government areas in Queensland, with Townsville and Rockhampton, participating in the state government-funded trial.

Queensland Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said a successful FOGO system could divert up to 83 per cent of organic material.

New CEO announced for Ipswich City Council Sonia Cooper was officially named the new Chief Executive Officer of Ipswich City Council at a Council meeting on November 18.

Ms Cooper said she was honoured and excited to be entrusted with the role of leading council’s service delivery to the Ipswich community, and the city’s elected representatives.

“I’m incredibly excited by the opportunities we have before us and am absolutely committed to leading the Council team to bring our best and work together for the community we are here to serve,” Ms Cooper said.

“I welcome the opportunity to partner with Mayor Teresa Harding and our councillors in leading our Council and its 1,400-plus employees.”

This Movember, Senior Constable Adrian Solah of Esk Police has been growing a moustache for men’s health.

Senior Constable Solah said he was doing it to raise funds for Movember, because they’re tackling some of the most significant health issues faced by men.

Refurbished bridge to better support big freight Work to rehabilitate and strengthen the Lockyer Creek bridge on Gatton-Helidon Road is now complete.

Transport and Main Roads Southern Queensland Regional Director Bill Lansbury said the bridge was an important piece of infrastructure for the region’s freight and agriculture.

“The bridge was built in 1966 and after 55 years of service it was due for a

refurbishment,” Mr Lansbury said.

“We repainted it and repaired or replaced various parts.

“Strengthening the bridge involved installing an external tensioning system to the headstocks and girders.

“These works have increased its structural capacity to maintain safety for type 1 road trains and ensure freight efficiency for

Gatton-Helidon Road into the future.

“This is good news for heavy vehicle operators who will experience less disruptions for maintenance.”

Mr Lansbury said project completion was also good news for the micro-bat colonies found living under the bridge.

Four species of micro-bat were roosting under the bridge.

“Before construction, the nests and bats were carefully removed or relocated,” Mr Landsbury said.

“Now the works are complete, we have installed 10 bat boxes to encourage them to roost under the bridge again.” $3.6 million was invested through the Accelerated Works Program to deliver the bridge rehabilitation and strengthening project.

Refurbishment works on the Gatton-Helidon Road bridge are complete.

College has faith in 2021 graduates

BY GRACE CRICHTON Faith Lutheran College said farewell to their senior class at their valedictory service and school assembly last Wednesday.

The valedictory service awarded top achievers at the Plainland college in areas of academics, vocational studies, citizenship, services, cultural excellence, and personal growth.

Josephine Baldry was awarded the Helbig Award for Dux of the College.

Josephine received a Gold Academic Award and subject honours is Biology, Chemistry, and Legal Studies.

She is the first student from Faith to receive a Certificate for Excellence is Chemistry from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.

“I’m hoping to go to UQ and do the dual degree in nursing and midwifery and I want to do that as a pathway into sonography,” Josephine said.

Hannah Schultz was surprised to be awarded the Ampol Allrounder Award “I had no idea, didn’t see it com-

ing,” Hannah said.

“I’ve participated in GBC [Greater Brisbane Conference] competitions every term for my whole life at high school.”

Deputy Principal Tyson Kenny said Hannah’s dedication to sporting pursuits was equally matched by her application in the classroom.

Daniel Clarke received the VET Student of the Year Award.

Daniel has a career as an electrician planned and has completed 10 Certificates and Statements of Attainment while at school.

“I did work experience [as an electrician] in grade 10, and enjoyed it, so thought I’d keep going and I’ve liked it ever since.”

Director of Teaching and Learning Darron Skinner-Martin said the cohort of 117 student achieved an impressive number of qualifications during their college careers.

“For the first time ever, every graduating student in the year 12 cohort will leave the college with a certificate qualification,” Mr Skinner-Martin said.

LJ Hooker announces support for community Christmas appeal

As Christmas approaches, the community is reminded that the festive season can be a difficult time of year for many families. It’s an important period for businesses to reflect on the ways in which they can assist those in need.

The team at LJ Hooker’s Esk |Toogoolawah group are delighted to once again announce their support of the 5th annual Christmas Hamper Appeal along with New Season Church.

The appeal was created with the hopes of providing hampers to hundreds of underprivileged families during the holiday season. Now in its fifth year, the appeal is rallying the community once again, to help to provide a positive Christmas experience for those in less fortunate circumstances.

Helen of LJ Hooker says the team is proud to be able to do their bit to bring some cheer to the local community on Christmas Day. “As an office we feel strongly about giving back to our community, and our team thought that working with local groups to help distribute food to much needed families was the perfect way to give back,” she said.

The campaign is collecting anything that will help ease the burden of Christmas, including nonperishable items such as biscuits, tinned fruit, cereal and bon bons. The items are packaged up into hampers and delivered just before Christmas. “These are all items that can make someone’s day that bit more joyous,” explains Debra Millerick from New Season’s Church.

Funds for new mental health project in Gatton Gatton COTA Senior Citizens raised over $1800 for mental health efforts last month.

During Mental Health Week, the seniors organised a high tea and country music events to raise the funds and presented the cheque to Peace Lutheran parish pastor Rob Edwards last week.

Pastor Rob said the funds will go toward a long-term plan to provide mental health assistance in Gatton.

“The plan is to have some kind of mental health assistance here, even if it’s just mental health first aid, it doesn’t have to be long term treatment,” he said.

“But what it has to be is somebody here, now.”

Pastor Rob said waiting a few days or weeks for appointments ‘isn’t going to cut it.’

“It may be just a short talk, one of our staff trained in mental health first aid… and sit down and talk to the per-

son and tell them it’s going to be ok,” Pastor Rob said.

The funds donated by the senior citizens will go toward setting up this service.

Lockyer Community Centre held a free sausage sizzle in Gatton on Friday for International Men’s Day. Community centre manager Linda Roberts handed out information packs for men with the free snags.

“International Men’s Day is about shining a light on men, men’s needs and men’s support,” she said.

The centre provided information on local support groups, mental health information, medical support groups,

medical conditions, and social groups specifically for men.

“Unfortunately a lot of men are very hesitant to come and admit that they need a helping hand, so we’re trying to connect with men and share this information with them,” Ms Roberts said.

Ms Roberts encouraged men to visit the community centre on Crescent St. “We can provide you with flyers, information and numbers directly for those support services and people,” Ms Roberts said.

Lots to love in Linville The small town of Linville was buzzing over the weekend as the village celebrated its second annual Heritage Festival.

A highlight of the program was the twilight performance by Angel Strings Chamber Orchestra Quintet on Saturday night to an audience of 90.

During the day, chainsaw artist Luke Sheehan spent nine hours carving a stag from a 2.4m high hoop pine log, sponsored by Total Sawmilling and Timber, which will sit pride of

place in the Linville Community Garden.

Linville Progress Association secretary Carolyn Barker revealed stage two of the garden.

“It is really a central hub for this small village, population as of the last census 167 and growing,” she said.

“There is a lot of interest in this village and other towns and villages throughout the Somerset region and we are loving to see this re-engagement of rural and regional activity and life.”

Bank donation for RDA

BY GRACE CRICHTON Lockyer Valley Riding for the Disabled representatives with CommBank Gatton staff.

Lockyer Valley Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) received a $500 donation from the Commonwealth Bank Community Donation this week.

RDA Representatives received the cheque and met with CommBank Gatton staff on Monday morning.

Branch manager Sharleen Southee said the bank gives two $500 donations to community groups each year.

“We, as a team, get to select who want to give this to in the community,” Ms Southee said.

RDA’s Terry Dingle said the money will go toward improvements to their grounds at Regency Downs.

Heather blooms in Tabeel

“That’s what always made me feel good, when I was helping people.”

Heather King spent her life helping people and bringing joy to their days.

One of her greatest joys was the Red Cross Chelsea Flower Show, which turned into the flower display at the Laidley Spring Carnival.

“The lady who used to co-ordinate the Red Cross Chelsea Flower Show couldn’t do it anymore, and she came to me and asked me if I would take it over,” Heather said.

“I got a lot of pleasure out of doing it.

“It was all fun to me, it was never work.”

Alongside her commitment to the flower show, Heather was involved with Meals on Wheels for 40 years, was an Elder at Laidley Uniting Church, and raised three sons.

Her lifelong philosophy was to always serve others.

“See, I truly believe if you do all to the glory of God everything goes good,” she said.

“If you do all to the glory of God, things work well.

“That’s one of my favourite thoughts.”

Heather was born in Lowood and when she was one her family moved to a farm at Mulgowie, where she spent her childhood.

“You got up in the morning at about half past three in the

frost and went and got the cows in, milked the cows, fed the animals, and then you caught your pony, hopped on and off you went to school,” Heather said.

She rode a horse three miles

to Mulgowie State School, but logistics made it difficult to continue her education past primary school.

“I would have had to catch a bus to go to Gatton to go to

high school and then my parents would have had to board me somewhere and they couldn’t afford to, Heather said.”

“That part of it I missed out on.”

“I made wedding dresses and wedding cakes, and sometimes I would do the dress and the

cake,” Heather said.

“I had a room in town to do fittings, or they came to the house.

“That was the work I used to do “I loved it.

“You’ve got to like what you’re doing, otherwise you won’t do it well.

Heather met Laidley boy Brian King when he partnered her for the Debutant Ball.

They were married April 7, 1956 at the Presbyterian Church.

From then, Heather became a dedicated parishioner.

“From then we went to church every time,” she said.

She said her marriage was a happy time.

Brian supported her, especially the flower show, and the couple enjoyed doing the same things.

“My husband loved me, loved doing Chelsea Flower Show with me,” Heather said.

“I’ve got three sons and they grew up with it, that became part of their life too.”

As a new resident at Tabeel, Heather said it was unusual to have people looking after her, after she has looked after others all her life, but there is plenty to keep her occupied.

“Now I’ve come here [to Tabeel] and they’ve got a garden full of flowers out there and nobody to arrange them,” Heather said.

Tabeel will never be short of beautifully arranged flowers with Heather around.

Drawn to the Condensery Two new exhibitions opened at The Condensery, Toogoolawah on Friday 5 November.

Drawn to Home by Blue Mountains-based artist Catherine O’Donnell is showing in Galleries 1 and 2, while video work by Diana Baker Smith, The Lost Hour, is running in the bomb shelter.

O’Donnell is known for her life-like drawings of various elements of architecture, in this case the unassuming fibro house.

Synonymous with the post-war boom in Australia, fibro offered a low-cost alternative for building homes, with whole suburbs of these modest, affordable homes springing up around

the country. The artist’s own childhood memories, and the associated emotional ties to place, inspires her works.

Diana Baker Smith’s The Lost Hour is a single video exhibit which reflects on how archives can be used to review the history of under-recognised figures in Australian art history, particularly women.

Laidley Christmas Carnival is back After being forced to cancel last year due to COVID-19, the popular Laidley Christmas Carnival is back this year from 6pm on Friday November 26.

Event Coordinator, Anna Ratcliffe is expecting hundreds to attend with Santa Claus, free entertainment and rides, Christmas carols, circus street performers, market stalls and plenty more set to flood the main stretch of Laidley from Spicer Street to William Street.

“There will be a sausage sizzle, a merry-go-round, and we’re trying to get a big slide up the main street,” Ms Ratcliffe said.

“There will also be Twilight trad-

ing and Something to Sing About, with the choir to be situated in front of the post office.

“It’s fantastic for the kids and it’s great for the parents as well, because it’s not a big outlay coming into Christmas and the kids have something fun to do, especially as they don’t have to pay for the rides.”

Ms Ratcliffe said the best part about the Laidley Christmas Carnival is the community spirit it brings.

“It’s great, the support of the Lady Pioneer Village, Historical Society, Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the Chamber of Commerce, they’re always great volunteers,” Ms Ratcliffe said.

Laidley Christmas Carnival returns on Friday November 26, with activties and entertainment to flood the main street.

Ingredients ¾ cups self-raising flour 1 cup shredded coconut ½ cup firmly packed brown sugar ½ cup pumpkin seeds (pepitas)

½ cup sunflower seeds 1/3 cup sultanas ¼ cup chopped dried apricots ¾ cup low fat milk 1 egg

Method

Combine flour, coconut, sugar, seeds and fruit in a bowl Whisk milk and egg.

Add to flour mixture and mix well.

Spoon into pan/tray, smooth top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until firm.

Stand for 15 minutes, turn out on to wire rack.

Cut when cool.

National Ag Day push to build workforce On National Agriculture Day, Friday November 19, the National Farmers’ Federation encouraged Aussies to picture themselves in a career in our nation’s most important industry.

“COVID-19 has also prompted many of us to revaluate where we live and what we do for a living,” National Farmers Federation President Fiona Simson said.

“AgDay also comes when so many young people are deciding ‘where to now’ after finishing school or university or considering how to fill in their summer holidays.

“On National Ag Day, we’re kick starting a conversation about the opportunities in our food and fibre industries and challenging Aussies to ‘Choose their AgVenture’.”

Ms Simson said no matter your interest, skillset or location, there was an opportunity for everyone somewhere in agriculture.

“There are careers in fields as diverse as animal husbandry, finance, digital technology, science, machine operation, marketing, trade and policy development.

Full-time jobs, part-time jobs, seasonal work – there are so

many ways to get involved in agriculture and to play a role in feeding and clothing the world, sustaining our regional economies and powering the economy.”

Ms Simson said worker shortages in the horticulture sector were much talked about and had become particularly critical with COVID-19 restrictions, but the shortages were not limit-

ed to seasonal on-farm work.

“It is a widespread problem that, as an industry, we have to address with urgency and focus.

“It’s a challenge that each individual can contribute to solving, by creating an awareness of the pathways on offer. The NFF has a goal to increase agriculture’s workforce by 25 per cent by 2030.”

Pohlman’s Nursery was awarded Farm Biosecurity Producer of the Year for 2021 and the extensive nursery is going from strength to strength.

Innovation and Special Projects Manager Andy O’Brien said the nursery, now in its 45th year of business, got on board with the biosecurity program ten years ago.

“We were involved in the pilot, helping set up the biosecure hazard program,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We do things like limiting vehicles onto the site, any vehicle that does have to come on is inspected, we inspect and quarantine any plant that does come onto the nursery.

“Anything that doesn’t meet our expectations or has an issue will get rejected and

“Because we’ll be propagating cuttings in here, we want to keep the environment as stable as we can for them,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We’ll reduce water use, reduce loss, and increase what we can do.

“It’s the biggest project we’ve ever done here.”

The advanced technology is another step in tightening their biosecurity.

“We’ll have our key growers and propagators who can come in, that way we’re not bringing in pests or diseases from other parts of the nursery or outside.

“There’s a real opportunity in the new house to keep it clean.”

Lockyer at the Mitchell Shield

Lockyer Cricket Association travel to Stanthorpe for the first round of the Mitchell Shield on November 28.

Mitchell Shield is the highest grade of representative cricket between regions on the Darling Downs and Lockyer before selection for Country representative sides.

Lockyer last won the Shield

in 2017, and players from all clubs in the Lockyer Cricket Association qualify for selection in this side.

Chris O’Brien commented that “As young boys we looked up to the local representatives from our clubs and aspired to be like them.”

Captain Sam Steinhardt said they are always around the top couple of sides at the end of the regular season.

“We are putting together

a talented young side that we hope will emulate the successes of the 2017 side,” he said.

“Lachlan Sticklen is the only remaining player from the 2017 winning side.”

The 2021 side can be the catalyst for a new era in the development of Lockyer cricket.

Memorial Race Day a success The annual James O’Dwyer Memorial Apprentice Cup Gatton races were held on Monday November 15 after being forced to postpone from the previous Friday due to wet weather.

Despite the last-minute change, President of the Lockyer Valley Turf Club, Terry Kirkwood, said both the lunch on Friday and the postponed races on the Monday were a big success.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t race on the Friday, but all the families enjoyed a seafood lunch,” Mr Kirkwood said.

“We would have had a better turnup on Friday if the races were going ahead but we can’t control the weather.”

Mr Kirkwood said Lilli Barr, who rode ‘East Esplanade’ and was the winner of

the Memorial Day Race was outstanding on the day.

“She set the pace,” Mr Kirkwood said.

With the first four places all going to female jockeys, Mr Kirkwood said it’s not surprising.

“There are more female apprentices these days than male apprentices so they’re dominating,” he said.

The winning jockey received a $700 Saddleworld voucher, with second and third place receiving a $200 and $100 voucher respectively.

Mr Kirkwood said there will be one more race day this year, on this week before the next major race day is held in January 2022.

“Our next major race day will be the ‘Tradies Day’ beach party races.”
