THE ARRIVAL of two new portaloos provided relief in more ways than one.

Temp toilets step in right direction

Truckers using the Gatton Heavy Vehicle Decoupling Facility have lamented the lack of amenities at the site since its opening in May 2021.The portable toilets appeared on site on the afternoon of Friday August 5. Transport and Main Roads initially threatened a $56,000 later changed their tune and allowed the toilets to stay. Wes Walker has been campaigning for facilities at the site for 14 months and, although the portaloos are welcome, he is pushing for a permanent solution. “I want a proper, big self-contained unit,” Mr Walker“That’ssaid.the end goal. “It would be just as good as a bricks and mortar, and at bugger all cost.” Mr Walker has taken it upon himself to clean the toilets daily at his expense. A portable ablution block would be the best solution, Mr Walker said, as it does not need to be connected to the sewerage network and could be moved if needed, like in Lockyer Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice president John Schollick said he applauded Mr Walker’s “I’d like to take my hat persistent, and sticking out at these people,” Mr Schollick said.Mr Schollick said he felt TMR ‘mismanaged’ the Gatton“I’vefacility.even said I would provide toilets for them through my business Lockyer Waste, I would supply the toilets and maintain them,” he wassaid.declined because it was ‘all too Memberhard’.for Lockyer Jim McDonald said he raised the issue several times. “On each occasion, we received a resounding ‘no’ from TMR and the Minister with the most recent being 28 April 2022,” he said. “However, after a brief visit from a Labor Senator from another state, this decision has been curiously and promptly overturned. “Where is the apology from the Minister for delaying this decision over the last 14 months?”

Projects include woodwork, art, or gardening, and the students set a focus for themselves, like staying on task or speaking respectfully. “It’s something for them the school program but it keeps them interested in being at school,” Mr Ward said. It has proved particularly autism.Michelle Robertson’s daughter and son have both been part of the program and The high school adopted the program six years ago. THIS week is Queensland Road Safety Week (QRSW), running from August 22 to August 26. This year’s theme is ‘road safety starts with me’. Every day, road crashes devastate the lives of Queenslanders and take an enormous toll on families andThecommunities.numberoflives lost, and people seriously injured in crashes on Queensland roads continues to rise. Road safety starts with you every time you use the road – regardless of whether you’re a driver, passenger, pedestrian, or you ride a bike, motorbike, or e-scooter. We all have a role to play in keeping ourselves and others safe on our roads. Throughout road safety week police are raising awareness and promoting safe driving focusing on the Fatal Five; speeding, drink/ drug driving, seatbelts, fatigue and distraction, reminding everyone that our everyday behaviours can be directly transferable to situations on the road. Looking at your phone can be a hazardous distraction, even more dangerous when driving on the road. Focus your attention on the road around you and put your phoneBeingaway.tempted to go fast and weave around others to save a few seconds on your trip is a dangerous choice on a scooter or bike, and an even more dangerous choice on the road. Slow down, drive to the conditions of the road, tough new penalties apply for speeding – Expect cameras and police anywhere,Lettinganytime.impatience take over and encroaching on someone’s space is a general annoyance but more dangerous decision on the road. Remain patient and courteous towards other road users. If you’re tired don’t drive, share the drive. A sudden stop when you’re following too closely can be a costly and dangerous choice on the road. Share the road and give other road users the space, they need to stay safe – especially pedestrians, bicycle riders, motorbike riders and truck drivers.Which behaviours can you easily change to make our roads a safer place?

The site currently operates at a net loss of approximately $60,000 per annum.

GRACE CRICHTON Property market pushing investors to sell, rental rolls shrink

RENTAL shortages are gripping the Lockyer Valley and Somerset like elsewhere in the country, with myriad factors impacting on the property markets. Gatton Real Estate agent and manager Allison Vinckier said rising house prices encouraged investors to sell their properties, effectively removing the house from the rental market. “Median house prices are increasing and investors want to capitalise,” she“They’vesaid. realised after conversations with their property managers, being offered appraisals by us, their investment’s worth so it might be a good time to Mrssell.”Vinckier said the property market is always going through ‘boom and bust’ cycles and the local market has been static for several years. Mrs Vinckier said many new buyers coming to the Lockyer Valley were from cities and the southern lockdowns.Largerland sizes and the ability to work from home made country living ideal. Mrs Vinckier said shortages can drive up rental prices but it was about market drivers and keeping housing affordable. er is recommending a rent increase that’s not affordable for the tenant, it may put that tenant into hardship,” she said. Although the housing crisis is a ‘multifaceted’ problem, Mrs Vinckier said government housing could be a solution to make up the shortfall in accommodation.“Over 90% of long-term rental accommodation is supplied by private investors,” she said. “How do we support those people to continue to want to buy and keep [those houses as rentals]? “When so much of the market is supported by private investors and the market forces are really pushing them to consider selling… the government would have had to consider and build.”

THE Lockrose Waste Facility will close from October 1 and the Lockyer Waters site will open an additional day per week from October 8. The closure was approved at Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s (LVRC) August Council Meeting. LVRC Deputy Mayor and Waste Portfolio Councillor Jason Cook said the closure was due to a range of factors.“Since February, there events impact the region that have resulted in the closure of this site, multiple times, as it is inaccessible when wet,” he“Thesaid.site is also inaccessible for heavy vehicles and offers no queuing space off the main road, which can pose a safety issue at times. “The location offers limited storage and, as a result, limited recycling options too.”

Gatton’s Ned Logan remembered Peter Alexander ‘Ned’ Logan (03.02.1929-23.07.2022), Chief Steward of the vegetable section of the Gatton Show.PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED

Read by Harold Kilah PETER Alexander (Ned) Logan was born at Gatton hospital on February 3, 1929. The only son of Eddie (Peter Edward) and Mabel (Evans) Logan and brother to Valma (Joan), Daphne and Beverley.Nedgrew up on a dairy farm at Upper Tenthill. This is also where he went to school next door until the age of After14.Ned’s father joined the army, he left the farm and went to live with his aunty Lucy at Sandgate. Ned started work at a He did not like being shut up in a building all day, so he left and went to work in the fruit and vegetable markets. He stayed working there until after the war. When his father was discharged from the army the family returned to the farm in Ned’s1947. mother Mabel died suddenly a year later. Ned continued working with his father until his father’s death in 1954. He stayed working on the farm on a shared basis. It was not long after this that the farm was transformed into an agricultural farm growing potatoes and lucerne, and Indian Cream rockmelons which Ned regarded as better than the Hales’ Best that my father grew. The advance in irrigation systems allowed for this transition. Ned became a regular visitor to the Kilah family across the road, where he was considered to part of the family with always addressing my mother as ‘mother’ not Grace or Mrs Kilah. No Kilah event was ever organised without Ned. a nineteen- to twenty-yearold?It might have been that there were triplets as well as some older siblings for Ned to give some playful attention. In 1954 Ned met Doreen Haines who was visiting relatives who lived on the other side of the creek bank. They were married on April 14, 1956 at the Presbyterian Church in Gatton. After being married for a short time, they were blessed with their only child, a son whom they named Gregory Edward.In1969 Ned and his family moved from Tenthill into Cleary Street Gatton. Over the coming years Ned worked on a farm for Russ Zirbel and Gerry Burgess at Agricultural Requirements and later at Lockyer Bag Branding for 13 years. While living at Upper Tenthill Ned was a member of the organising committee for the Logan Family Centenary Celebrations in 1968. Ned also held a life membership for the Gatton Indoor Bowls Club, and for the Gatton Show Society where he held the position of Chief Steward for the vegetable section.Nedalso loved playing cards, gardening and always having a yarn with his many friends. While an occasional attendee at the Upper Tenthill Congregational Church, Ned became a regular attendee at Gatton Uniting Church and given the honour of cutting the 150th anniversary cake as one of the oldest members. It was here that he connected with Upper Tenthill folks, such as Bill and Marg Peach and Betty Chalmers. After many years of working Ned retired. He spent his time with Doreen and with his four grandsons, Troy, Douglas, Peter and Daniel, and later with his great-grandkids, handing out minties and drumsticks. Ned passed away on July 23 at Toowoomba Hospital. Ned is survived by his grandsons Troy and his wife Kim, Douglas and his partner Nadine, Peter, Daniel and his wife Manon. His four great grandchildren are Tate, Blake, Hudson and Alyssa. Ned will be sadly missed by all.

Mark Pitkin of LJ Hooker Esk works throughout the Somerset region. He has built a formidable reputation within his local community as a skilled negotiator. Showcasing his tenacity and salesmanship, Mark impressed with the ‘under the hammer’ sale of 29 Barbour Street, Esk. According to Mark, the decision to auction the property was a strategic one. “I knew that the property had unique characteristics which would appeal to a broad demographic of prospective buyers. My goal was to maximise the return for my owners by creating a competitive auction“Whenenvironment.”themarketis buoyant, the auction strategy is an effective way to create urgency with interested parties. The property is then sold unconditionally, providing total certainty and closure,” he says. “Every time I approach a new campaign, I will make recommendations based on current market conditions and taking into account the property’s unique characteristics”, Mark says. “It’s important to select an Agent who understands how important it is to choose the right method of sale, based on your objectives, timeframes and individual circumstances.”Inthisexample, Mark ran a 4-5 week campaign culminating in an auction. Mark says that 4-5 weeks is the ideal length for a campaign, as it ensures any interested parties have the opportunity to view the property and undertake due diligence. It also brings the competitive tension to a head while the property listing is still fresh and exciting. Mark prefers on site auctions, as it allows buyers the opportunity to revisit the property and reaffirm the reasons they showed interest in the first place. Mark indicated that the property was popular among buyers, because of its low-set, low-maintenance construction. Positioned on the edge of the town precinct, on almost 2 acres of useable land, it was a unique offering that would bring tremendous value in the future. Mark’s clients were overjoyed with the Mark Pitkin impresses with sale under the hammer result and describe Mark as an agent who is reliable and hardworking. If you are looking to relocate or sell your property, call Mark Pitkin at LJ Hooker Esk for a confidential discussion.

AQUARIUS Each New Moon indicates a shift of gear in a particular area of life. This week, the heavens highlight a fresh start involving money, an intimate relationship or trust issues. And you’ll be extra curious mid-week as you dig up gossip, uncover a secret or study up a storm. Writer Dorothy Parker (born on August 22, 1893) reminds us: “The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.” Saturday’s impulsive stars could lead to an argument or accident so slow down.

PISCES The New Moon encourages you to get a romance, business partnership or joint venture moving ASAP. Time to heed the wise words of birthday great, Mother Teresa: “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.” But do you have ridiculously unrealistic expectations about a close relationship? It may be time for a reality check. Are you unhappily single and searching for love? Be on the lookout for a creative thinker who is a good Copyrighttalker. VIRGO The silvery New Moon lights up your sign. So it’s the best week of the year to update your wardrobe, change your appearance, launch a project, apply for a job or start a new phase of your life. Not sure where to begin? Powerful Pluto trines your ruling planet Mercury on Monday and Tuesday. So research, study, strategic planning, deep concentration and focused communication will get you where you want to go. Personal projects and creative pursuits are also favoured.

LIBRA With the New Moon stimulating your self-sabotage zone, are you being your own worst enemy? Is the only person undermining your efforts actually you? Stop being an over-accommodating Libra who’s trying to please everyone and, instead, start focusing on your future health, wealth and happiness. So your mantra for the week is from birthday great, singer-songwriter Florence Welch: “You should have high expectations for yourself, and others should come second.”

SCORPIO Education, joint ventures and group projects are favoured this week, as you display your leadership skills for all to see. There are opportunities for advancement via connections within your local community, but it will take creative teamwork and sustained effort to turn a lucky break into long-term success. It’s also time to get some your personal goals and dreams for the future. Remember, you can’t hit a target if you haven’t got one. SAGITTARIUS This week, revisit your career goals and take steps to make them a reality. But, when it comes to close relationships, keep your cool and avoid the temptation to over-talk and overreact. You can’t control what others say but you can control your response. There could also be some tension between shining brightly at work friends. Remember, if anyone can juggle, multitask and have fun, it’s a versatile and humorous Sagittarius.

TAURUS This week the New Moon’s in fellow earth sign Virgo, so it’s time to be the practical and productive Taurus you were born to be. But don’t just the minutiae of daily life. Mercury and Pluto encourage you to expand your creative horizons, as you strive to make the world a better and more beautiful place. Be inspired by birthday great and humanitarian Mother Teresa: “The world is hungry not only for food, but also for beauty.”

ARIES New Moon week is the ideal time to ditch bad daily habits and start afresh. It’s a juggle to get everything done but keep calm and don’t lose your cool! You’re unusually focused, but are you focusing on the right things? Work, health, wellwhere you need to make some long-overdue changes and adjustments. But – if you are too hasty, hot-headed and impetuous – you could accident. So pace yourself.

GEMINI The New Moon promises a fresh start on the domestic front, as you entertain at home or tackle a DIY project. Plus Mercury (your patron planet) activates your entertainment and creativity zone. Sharing a sport or hobby with a loved one will time and effort than you can actually deliver). Attached Twins – plan a romantic rendezvous with your sweetheart. For some singles, a platonic relationship could lead to long-term love.

CANCER Get creative and put on your problem-solving hat, Crabs! This week, the New Moon activates your desire to assist a friend, neighbour or family member in a practical and hands-on way. Plus Mercury and Pluto help you resolve an issue (at home or within your local community) in a strategic and satisfying way. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great Mother Teresa (who was born on August 26, 1910): “Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home.”

LEO nancial matters. Lions are drawn to luxury-living and you’re inclined to buy expensive things that you don’t really need. This week, do your best to avoid being an impulsive binge shopper. The more creatively and proactively you nurture your nest egg, the more it will gradually grow. The Mercury/Pluto trine encourages you to sparkle and shine in your own unique way. Open the doors of perception and let the sunshine in!

CAPRICORN Pluto is still transiting slowly through your sign, ambition. But this powerful planet also cranks up your controlling side, which can alienate you from others. This week the Pluto/Mercury trine helps you balance steely determination with a more strategic and diplomatic approach.
