CONGRATULATIONS to the graduating class of 2022.

Attending formals is one of my favourite events of the year.

I love the fashion but I also love seeing our young people celebrated.

I’ve interviewed a handful of year 12 students from across our schools and they are bright, insightful, and conscientious young adults.

Please enjoy our formals feature (pages 25-36) as much as we enjoyed captur-

ing this special day.

All the best in your after school endeavours, students.

A special shout out to two courageous young women who tackled the entire Brisbane Valley Rail Trail this weekend (page 12).

On another note, I must mention the Linville Heritage and Arts Festival.

I spent most of my Saturday there and it was amazing.

A huge congratulations

After several months of site inactivity on the Jimna Fire Tower repair and stabilisation project, and the subsequent termination of the initial repairs contract, the Jimna Fire Tower Action Group (JFTAG) is pleased to report that, following a meeting held on the May 24, 2022, with personnel from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and QBuild, it

Queensland Government was committed to recommencing work following a Project Reset.

The Queensland Government delegation advised, that in addition to engineering and safety requirements, any repair and stabilisation works must also be approved by the Department of Environment and Science, given that the Jimna Fire Tower is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.

A list of suggestions compiled by JFTAG, itemising repair and building procedures that may have been followed by the original builders, the legendary Arthur Leis and his son Gary, was gratefully received by DAF, and will be reviewed in the current project context.

DAF have advised, that there will be an interval period during which time, new repair designs can be completed, and necessary approvals obtained.

The Jimna Fire Tower Project Reset is destined to

a new contract, a new tender and possibly a new contractor.

Queensland Governments intentions are clearly shown in the attached photo, taken 23/09/22, which shows the replacement tower legs back on site, the steel boxing supporting the tower legs were retained in place, and the tower site is being maintained.

The Queensland Government have committed to providing further email updates to stakeholders and interested parties, and

Jimna Fire Tower repair and stabilisation “Project Reset” will be delivered in good faith, and in a spirit of co-operation.

Lowood Cop Shop - why we need a better one

As an owner/occupier of 2.5 years at Lowood, I agree a 24/7 manned Police Station is a neccessity. With the population of

to the progress association, Linville Hotel, Linville Store and Café, and all the other businesses and groups who contributed.

It was a huge step up from last year and the year before, and I am looking forward to seeing what’s in store for Linville at next year’s festival (see pages 14 and 15).

Lowood and Fernvale expected to increase in coming decades, a large, new well manned Police Centre

Crime will only increase in line with population growth and it’s the expectation of residents be they renters or owners that police will be called upon when needed.

I recommend the existing Lowood Police Station be demolished and a much larger one built in its place or perhaps at another location?

There is now a great opportunity to plan for the future, which must include a purpose built Police Centre.

I also think the idiotic development proposal of Lowood’s CBD should be scrapped with the money being better spent on protecting its citizens..

There is no shortage

Queensland.

Another option is to close Lowood station permanently and build another one at Fernvale, which would service Lowood and neighbouring areas.

I don’t think 2 stations would be needed, just a large one catering for all local areas.

Constructing a new centre is ambitious and costly,

however will be worth it in the coming years.

An open day could be held to allow residents to see who and what is protecting them.

If the state Government prefers to keep the existing station (too old/small and not meeting the needs of residents and visitors)

necessary and a 24 hour watch introduced.

I want to see regular foot and vehicle patrols around Lowood and Fernvale at night.

The installation of lights in Clock Park is a good start.

The Community will grow to meet the new station, so the bigger the better.

Again, there’s a great opportunity right now to make a tangible plan for Lowood’s future and Fernvale.

I doubt Police will ever

torched the station, so the Police and State Government have now been put on notice that - no-one - not even the Police are safe from anyone wanting to cause harm.

It’s easy to see Law breakers of any age are running the show and it’s not the Police or State Government...

Warrego under new patrol

THE LOCKYER Valley has a new Highway Patrol unit, based at Laidley Police Station.

Supervisor Sergeant Ray van den Bosch said the new unit, which launched on October 8 and comprises

tribute directly to road safety initiatives with proactive and reactive strategies, and enforcement with an educational approach to reduce road trauma and injuries to road users.

“An example of proactive strategy is our general presence on the highway, conducting enforcement action,” he said.

“Some of our reactive strategies may be targeted operations in response to

“We’re not burdened by the core service like the genof their main focuses is to respond to calls for service.

“We will support them in priority policing goals, but our primary responsibility is to be self-motivated,

working the problem areas in a proactive or preventative way.”

Problem areas of concern are the three main junction points with 80 zone reduction speed along the Warrego Highway in Crowley Vale, Hatton Vale and Minden.

“They’re collision points, that’s where there’s an opportunity for a driver to turn out into the path of another driver,” Sgt van den Bosch said.

“Something I’ve noticed in my time patrolling the area

is drivers are causing other drivers to take evasive action to prevent the crash, so they’re relying on other people being a vigilant driver to avoid crashing into them, as opposed to the driver being a responsible driver and making good choices.”

The unit will promote responsible driver behaviour, focusing on the Fatal Five.

“We’re only testing a few cars before coming across a driver that’s gone over the limit or tested positive to a relevant drug, so that’s

concerning,” Sgt van den Bosch said.

He said drivers involved in crashes would often make admissions of tiredness.

“We’ve got methods to deby drugs or alcohol, but as such we don’t have a testing method to detect a driver’s fatigue level,” he said.

“That’s something we would encourage local residents to be honest with themselves with their driving, if they feel they are

“Being a transport corridor for the state, especially for heavy vehicles, we’re

compromised that impacts economically on the state,” Sgt van den Bosch said.

As of last Wednesday, 258 lives have been lost on Queensland roads, six more than the same time last year.

“We’re quite concerned that we will go over 300 lives lost on the road in this calendar year, that is not something we want to achieve.

“We want to drive towards zero and reduce the fatal crashes.”

Toogoolawah police news

TOOGOOLAWAH Police have recently received a number of complaints in relation to conduct of drivers around our school areas.

Please be aware of the road rules paying particular attention to parking on Gardner Street with the no stopping zone (Painted Yellow Line) on the cul-de-sac and the pickup and drop off zone on Old Mount Beppo Road.

Seven drivers were detected speeding from November 7-13, with the highest speed detected was 121kph.

With the Christmas period fast approaching, the community can expect an increase of police presence on our roads detecting speed and drink driving offences.

Police are investigating a stolen vehicle that travelled through Toogoolawah on Friday November 12.

Police were alerted to a white Hyundai Kona travelling north on the Brisbane Valley Highway at Wanora and later evaded police at Esk. The vehicle was later burnt out at Murgon.

Police are seeking any dash cam which may assist in the investigation.

“The cost to a rural council as opposed to Brisbane city is nearly cost prohibitive.

Local op shop gives back

THE GIVING season is year-round for Esk Community Op Shop.

As of November 10, the shop has donated $83,490 to Somerset schools, clubs, and charities since July 2021.

just amazingly huge for our schools,” she said.

“We are getting access to an electronic sign, and we don’t have the money to put the electronics in.

“Our P&C does a fantastic job, but this is just such a huge boost all by itself.

“Their input is just phe-

nomenal and we’d like to thank them very much.”

As well as Esk, Mr Cunningham said the op shop has donated to the schools in Toogoolawah, Linville, Harlin, Coominya, Tarampa, Mt Tarampa, Patrick Estate, and Clarendon.

Mrs Frecklington said that with limited fundraising opportunities over the past two years due to disasters of early 2022, the grants will make a huge difference for the community.

“Without our community groups, sporting clubs, and all those who volunteer their time, most of the events and activities we love would just not happen,” she said.

Best advice for snake encounters – leave them alone

CONTRIBUTED

DARLING Downs Health has encouraged residents to be snake aware as the warmer weather brings more snake bites.

The region had 13 snake bites in local emergency departments in October 2022.

Executive Director Rural Dr Christopher Cowling said it was important to learn

you or a family member is bitten, especially if you’re bushwalking in a remote area.

“While snakes can be encountered any time of the year, we know that more people present to our emergency departments with snake bites during Spring and Summer,” Dr Cowling said.

“It’s a timely reminder for residents to be on the lookout for snakes, and the best advice is to leave them alone.

“If you do come across a snake, don’t try to touch it or pick it up, instead back away to a safe distance.”

After a snake bite or sus pected snake bite, people should:

Check airway, breathing

and circulation – if the patient has collapsed, start CPR immediately.

Call 000 for an ambu lance to the emergency department of the nearest hospital – treat any snake bite as an emergency, regardless of whether you think the snake was ven omous or not.

Do not attempt to drive yourself to hospital or walk

– sit or lie down and stay as still as possible.

Immobilise the limb using a splint – any rigid object may be used as a splint, for example a spade, piece of wood or

tree branch or rolled up newspapers.

Keep still and try to remain calm.

You should not wash venom off the skin, cut the bitten area, try to suck the venom out or use a tourniquet.

“If a snake needs to be relocated from your home, leave it to the profession als,” Dr Cowling said.

Water infrastructure upgrades in Lockyer

URBAN Utilities is constructing a new wastewater pump station at Plainland and an 8km pipe to connect Plainland to the Laidley Wastewater Treatment Plant.

It is part of a $32 million upgrade to essential infrastructure in the Lockyer Valley.

Urban Utilities spokesperson Anna Hartley said the project would cater for projected growth in the area through to 2040.

“The Lockyer Valley region is growing and we’re delivering projects to cater for that growth,” she said.

“It’s important we upgrade our existing network and build new infrastructure for the future so we can continue to provide safe and reliable water and wastewater services to our customers.

“The new pump station will replace Urban Utilities’

existing tankering facility on Gehrke Road.”

Ms Hartley said Urban Utilities and their delivery partner, John Holland, would work to minimise any potential customer impacts as much as possible during the upgrade.

“We’ll be using trenchless technology to install around 2km of the new pipeline to minimise disruption to residents and the environment,” she said.

“We urge everyone to be aware there will be some

during the project and we thank residents and travellers in the region for their ongoing patience while we complete these essential works for the Plainland community.”

The project is expected to be completed by late 2023.

MAKE your way to the Mulgowie Markets on December 3 for a very special Christmas event.

Laidley’s Something to Sing About Choir will be joined by guest soloists Naomi Klazinga and Yu Hainan for a Christmas Carols Concert starting at 9.30am.

Choirmaster and conductor Gary Young said the soloists have ‘beautiful pieces to sing’.

Soprano Naomi will sing Mozart’s ‘Alleluia’ from the Motet: Exultate Jubilate and bass Yu will sing ‘The Trumpets Shall Sound’ from Handel’s Messiah.

“That shall be a real treat,” Mr Young said.

The soloists are both UQ graduates and have performed in numerous operas, competitions, and choirs.

The twenty voices of Something to Sing About Choir will perform a mix of Christmas music and are looking forward to their performance with the guest artists.

“The choir has been in full rehearsals with modern and

Don’t hold breath for Apex amphitheatre Jackie found her place helping the community

LAIDLEY Community Centre welcomed Jackie Porter to the team in September.

As the neighbourhood centre coordinator, she brings her experience in corporate HR to looking after the team and day-to-day operations.

Ms Porter said she has ‘found her place’.

After more than 20 years in the hotel industry, including Marriott, Hyatts, and Sheraton, community work eager to learn.

Learning about the numerous support services available was ‘mind blowing’ have a wealth of knowledge to share.

“It’s an incredible team here, there’s an incredible generosity of spirit,” Ms Porter said.

“Whether they’re volunteers, whether they’re paid thing to teach me.”

There has always been a connection to the Lockyer Valley for Ms Porter and her family.

Her parents ran the Forest

Hill pub for a time (see Rosemary’s story opposite) and her sister lives locally.

While with Marriott, Ms Porter was involved in humanitarian work including building orphanages in Indonesia and participating in Habitat for Humanity.

Coming to the Lockyer Valley, she realised how tough the world can be for vulnerable people living here.

“This area is very tough, [there are] a lot of challenges for people here,” she said.

“The economic crisis, the housing crisis, family crisis.

“It really was overwhelming to realise how great a need there was and how much work they were doing out of this little community centre.”

In only a few months, she has also recognised the resilience of the community and groups.

“There’s all these little groups supporting the needs in their own community,” she said.

“I think that’s quite telling about the communities, that they will stand tall at the worst possible times.”

THE Lake Apex amphitheatre project has been shelved due to higher than expected costs.

constructing an amphitheatre at the Gatton park in February 2021, but after the quotes exceeded the budget.

The project was put out to open tender twice and both times the responses were for amounts greater than the approved budget allocation.

Council closed the tender process and resolved to defer the project to future years in their ordinary council meeting on November 16.

Mayor Tanya Milligan said deferring the project was ‘disappointing’ but ‘responsible’, an opinion echoed by fellow councillors.

“I don’t see any shame

in us deferring it,” Cr Milligan said.

“It’s disappointing but we need to be sensible.”

The Lake Apex Amphitheatre project was submitted as part of a grant submission to the 2021-2024 South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program grant funding round and was successful.

Deputy Mayor Jason Cook said council projects needed to represent value for money.

“Even if its government money, we need to be spending it wisely,” Cr Cook said.

Rosemary and her remarkable family

ROSEMARY Lillian Porter raised her children the same way her remarkable parents raised her.

She was born on May 10, 1937 to Gladys May Wyatt and Valentine Charles Wyatt.

“I was born and bred in Darwin, in the tropical wild west, and lived there most of my life until I went to school in Western Australia,” Rosemary said.

She attended a boarding school in Coolgardie, after which she began her career in nursing back in Darwin.

I’m the sort of person that has empathy for everybody and I want to see them okay… so I stayed nursing for over a decade while I reared my family,” she said.

“Empathy and kindness for people is absolutely essential in my life.”

Rosemary instilled the same empathy and kindness taught to her by her parents into her three daughters and two sons.

She met her husband, Horace Edward Porter, while he worked in the Air Force.

“I met him in Darwin when he was up there with 5ACS

Squadron RAAF], they were up there building the aeroplane runways,” she said. They travelled around

ent postings, visiting Wagga Wagga and Hobart.

“We had good years in Wagga Wagga, my children loved the place,” Rosemary said.

Rosemary said her parents were remarkable people, role models to her and her siblings.

“I don’t listen to this nonsense about women not going to work, my mother worked and she had ten children!” she said.

“I had a good upbringing, dad would never tolerate dren.

“There were seven girls in the family, but he just lectured us all ‘you don’t need to be married, you don’t need to be working in the kitchen, you need to get an education and have a career’.”

Rosemary said Valentine was ahead of his time.

“Education, for my dad, was very important… he left me with a love of books, music and people,” she said.

“I always liked English and words… I’m into trilogies, the make believe – I love the Lord of the Rings.”

She enjoys mind games like scrabble and crosswords.

“You need to work your brain, you can’t just let it die… if you don’t use it, you lose it.”

Her father gave employment to many Indigenous people in Darwin, and he instilled respect for their culture in his children.

“The thing that always amazed me was the memory

of Indigenous people… I went back to Darwin to see my brother who is still up there and I came in contact with an Indigenous person in Darwin city and he just knew

me,” she said.

“I was a grown woman by then, I was married and started my family and yet he knew me as Gladys and Valentine’s child.

“My father always said people.”

Rosemary believed she was a role model to her children with her strong work ethic.

“I have a son and daughter working the mines in Western Australia, she’s driving a huge truck… I’m frightened for her, but she loves it,” she said.

“They’ve all worked, never bludged… they realised you work for what you get in this world.”

Rosemary and Horace settled in the Lockyer Valley and ran the Forest Hill pub for a time.

“I quite enjoyed the time I was there, but I didn’t want to do it anymore… I just didn’t like the lifestyle as a non-drinker,” she said.

“It’s hard when you’re stone-cold sober and there’s drunks everywhere… you look at them and you think ‘go home’, so no - I wasn’t good at it.”

After 26 years the couple divorced, and Horace passed later after falling ill with cancer.

“It’s okay… he was up here, his children were with him, and that was the main thing… that’s just a part of my life,” Rosemary said.

More recently, Rosemary volunteered at aged care homes, including at Tabeel Aged Care in the dementia ward.

“They could all tell me about their marriage, about the dress they wore, it was amazing… I really enjoyed it,” she said.

“More people should do voluntary work because it’s good for your soul.”

You don’t have to be alone on Christmas

DENISE Morris and the Laidley community cordially invites you to the Laidley Community Festive Feast on Christmas Day, 11am-3pm at the Laidley Showgrounds.

Denise said the feast was for those who found themselves home alone for Christmas.

“It was devised because a

home alone because their children are travelling or have just bought a home. “We normally have anywhere from 80 to 100 people.”

The feast will have a smorgasbord lunch thanks to donations from the community and the help of Laidley volunteers.

Denise ran the popular Chrome and Clutter retro festival, which will be donating $2,000 to the feast.

“That’s made it a whole lot better this year,” Denise said. “The drinks package

has been sponsored by Jim McDonald, which is really lovely, and we’ve had several gift vouchers donated by local businesses.

“Kelli’s Diner has again come up and is a good sponsor of the event, every year she does some desserts for us and this year she’s doing

Denise said the event was known for forging friend-

“The volunteers themselves have made great friendships through it too,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re old, young, rich, poor, everybody’s welcome – the stipulation is you’ve got to be home alone.”

School leavers hit trail for Cancer Council Australia

WHILE many school leavers headed to the Gold Coast for schoolies week, two year idea.

Carly Grieve from Peak Crossing and Eliza Carniel from Mulgowie spent their school riding the entire Brisbane Valley Rail Trail to raise funds for Cancer Council Australia.

“Every single one of my close friends is at schoolies right now and I’m on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail,” Carly said.

“But you know what, it’s been great.”

The pair were head girls

at Ipswich Girls Grammar and their families and school have been touched by cancer.

“We had a girl in the year above us who passed away actually, that was really sad for us,” Eliza said.

Their goal is to raise $3000 and as of Monday they had reached $3371.

The girls admit to being inexperienced cyclists, but they were determined to put themselves out of their comfort zones and challenge themselves to do the entire 161km trail.

“We thought, we’re pushing ourselves, why not get people to give us something to work towards,” Carly said.

“So that’s where the fundraising came from.”

Friday, they hit the road and started the trek from Yarraman at 3pm and spent the weekend nights sleeping in butt and Toogoolawah.

They hope other school leavers might follow their lead and do similar fundraising activities after school.

“You don’t have to be experienced as long as you’re committed,” Carly said.

Fox Racing supported their cause by donating helmets and new gear for the ride.

Carly’s grandfather kept them well fed along the way and their family supported them along the way.

NRMA shares tips for school-leavers

THOUSANDS of young, probationary drivers across the state are enjoying their end-of-school celebrations this week.

NRMA Insurance is encouraging year 12 students to take a few simple steps to ensure safe driving as they continue their schoolies week celebrations.

The insurer has developed a checklist of important actions for students to add to their to-do lists before departing on their trips, urging young people to prioritise safety.

High on the checklist is ensuring your car has been serviced recently and that basic mechanical components such as oil and tyre pressure are checked.

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Motor Assessing David Wilkes said the drive to popular schoolies destinations such as the Gold

Coast, Byron Bay and Noosa may be the longest road trip many of the probationary drivers have ever made.

“Book your car in to be serviced, make sure you have plenty of tread on your tyres, learn how to check the oil and water and pack top up supplies in case you need them along the way,” he said.

“With summer holidays around the corner, there are more people travelling on our roads in addition to the

schoolies.

“It is critical that young people are prepared for any situation that could occur while in the driver’s seat.”

Being free of distractions is essential, as is leaving enough braking distance between the vehicle in front and using high beams on poorly lit roads at night.

“We have seen the impacts of travelling long hours on

the roads and want to make sure our young drivers are protected and keeping safety front-of-mind while they mark this exciting milestone in their lives,” Mr Wilkes said.

“I would also remind drivers of the most import-

ant thing – don’t forget to let your parents or guardian know you have arrived safely at your destination.”

GETTING PREPARED FOR LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL: Have your car serviced. Learn how to check the

sure you have top up supplies in case it is needed.

Know how to check your tyre pressure – you can

pressure for your car on the sticker on your driver ’s door frame, or in the car’s

handbook.

Make sure you have a spare tyre and emergency kit and learn how to change a tyre.

Be familiar with the car you are driving.

If driving a new vehicle, or borrowing your parents or friend’s car, take it for a test run a few days prior so you can get used to the nuances

ent cars.

Always drive to the conditions – for example in rainy weather or low visibility reduce your speed by 10km/h.

Don’t worry about arriving by a certain time – take your time, respond to the conditions, take breaks.

Ensure your friends do not distract you while you are driving.

Be aware that in country areas’ wildlife could stray onto roads.

Never drive tired.

It started with our Hybrid technology over 25 years ago. But that was only the start. Now with the addition of the hydrogen-powered Mirai, we’re on our way to a cleaner tomorrow, today.

Bronze medal for Taylor at World Cup

KARNIE Taylor brought home a bronze medal from the International Bowling Federation (IBF) Para Bowling World Cup earlier this month.

The Lockyer local has represented Queensland in tenpin bowls before but this

the green and gold.

“It was a great experience,” Taylor said.

“I got to bowl with some of my friends and my team.”

Finishing on 1,911 pins over 12 games secured Taylor a podium place in the female division at the competition held on the Sunshine Coast, behind Victorian bowler Amanda Threlfall with 2,044

pins and silver medalist Dianne Demello from NSW with 1,937 pins.

Taylor was one of eight Australian competitors in the Intellectual Disability Singles.

Her highest game was 205 with an average of 173.

Taylor was selected for the team as a member of the newly formed Inclusion Na-

tional Training Squad (NTS).

The Tenpin Bowling Australia program comprises of the best available athletes in

(intellectual and blind/vision impaired), allowing representation in events like the Para Bowling World Cup.

Five bowlers were selected for the female quad, two of whom are from Queensland.

Vikings represented in XXXX Cup

Queensland Country Representative Calendar is the XXXX Cup, played between South Queensland and North Queensland.

This year, the carnival will be hosted by Mackay.

The competition takes the form of a T 20 game, followed by two one-dayers, following which the Queensland Country side will be chosen to play in the National Championships.

The Valley Vikings, in their tion, have had the honour of a player being selected for South Queensland, in all-rounder Regan (“Reggie”) Hoger.

Regan gained early representative honours playing Mitchell Shield for the Lockyer at the age of 18.

His desire to play high level cricket took him to Toowoomba, where again he achieved “Rep” honours in

the Schaeffer Shield.

Although a career path in the Brisbane Premier Cricket Competition beckoned with the Ipswich Hornets, he returned to the Lockyer once the Vikings entered the Ipswich competition, which offered both quality cricket and Representative pathways.

His fruitful season started with the Valley Vikings winning the Lenny Martin Cup undefeated, against SEQ Club sides.

That led to selection for the SEQ team in the Bulls Masters, followed by selection for SEQ in the Schaeffer Shield.

And now, selection for South Queensland has followed.

Valley Vikings coach, Lenny Martin believes Reggie has a bright future.

The Mackay carnival will be watched with keen interest in the Lockyer Valley.

She said she enjoyed the competition and friendships made.

“It made me feel awesome, it was so great to achieve that with the girls… I love them all, they’re all great girls… they’re from up north, Gold Coast, all over Queensland,” she said.

She said beating NSW was a particular highlight.

“That was great to beat New South Wales, especially after our trials against NSW before we went to nationals,” Brindle said.

She intends to play again

next year, and following that she would love to play for Australia.

“I would like to go further, I would like to go through the pathways which can lead to playing for Australia,” Brindle said.

“It would be unbelievable, I wouldn’t even believe it was real.”

She thanked her parents for driver her to her practices and games.

“I would like to thank

Hamilton and Darra, Darra especially, they encouraged me a lot and gave me many opportunities in higher-grade stuff and built up

Brindle said.

“A lot of people think it’s an old person sport, but it’s

“Believe in yourself because many people told me so many different things… if you just do what makes you happy you’ll get so far.”
