Wright and Blair take in large geographic areas – understandably, our population is sparse – but I wonder how much the people in Withcott have in common with the people of Springbrook?

Or Kilcoy with Redbank Plains?

There are far bigger electoral divisions than ours, as far as square kilometres go – like Kennedy and

Maranoa – but one of the foundational principles of division boundaries is some common factor among the populations of those seats.

So, do you feel the seats are appropriate to where you live, and do you feel represented?

Let’s act now, in time for the Federal Election in 2025.

Have you seen what’s planned for Glen Rock?

When I read Trevor Page’s ‘Letter to the Editor’ last week by the same title, I was reminded of the classic Simpson’s meme, “Old man shouts at the clouds”.

Trevor paints a dystopian view of the planned recreational park that is so far removed from reality that it’s hard to believe he’s read the master plan. “…a mountain that will be gifted exclusively to adrenalin fuelled junkies who like to throw themselves down steep slopes at breakneck speeds.

Don’t make the mistake, these are not the same bike riders that we currently see along the BVRT, these are the junkies and extremists of the sport.”

Sorry Trevor, but you appear to be wilfully misrepresenting the facts.

Of the fourteen trails accessible to mountain bikers, three are shared with walkers. Four are graded as Green (Easy). Ten are graded as Blue (Intermediate). There are no Black 'LIÀFXOW RU 'RXEOH %ODFN ([WUHPH trails, and none are planned.

The “adrenalin fuelled junkies who like to throw themselves down steep slopes at breakneck speeds” are just one part of the mountain biking community. There is nothing in the master plan that will be of any interest to them, except perhaps for a family day out with their kids.

Contrary to Trevor’s claim, it is precisely the bike riders we see on the BVRT who will be using the recreational park. The BVRT will bring them in, and they will stay a couple of days longer to enjoy the park. That extra couple of days will be worth millions to our local tourism operators, helping to create jobs for our young people and strengthen our

local economy.

But it’s not just about the tourism GROODUV $Q RIWHQ RYHUORRNHG EHQHÀW of the BVRT and recreational parks such as the Glen Rock project is the PHGLFDO DQG PHQWDO KHDOWK EHQHÀWV from people exercising more.

7KHUH DUH DOVR VRFLDO EHQHÀWV 7KH experience in other towns that have embraced mountain biking is that local young people have engaged with mountain biking as a sport, they have found jobs in the industry, and there has been a reduction in youth crime.

We had much the same opposition WR WKH %957 ZKHQ ZH ÀUVW VWDUWHG campaigning to get the project comSOHWHG 7KHUH ZDV ÀHUFH DQG RIWHQ quite irrational resistance from a few locals but look at it now. People come from all over the country to enjoy Australia’s longest rail trail.

The Glen Rock project was originally initiated by local Esk residents who put the proposal to Somerset Council through the Economic Development and Tourism sub-committee. Council has employed some of the best trail builders in the world as consultants.

All the mountain bike trails are graded easy or medium. There are some shared and some separate trails for walkers, and there will also be facilities for rock climbers. By value adding to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, it will bring in valuable tourism dollars and create jobs.

Failing pump loses water

As of Friday, the Lockyer Valley dam was only 45%, due to a pump failing during the biggest downpour of the season.

An Seqwater spokesper-

son said the three automatic pumps servicing Lake Clarendon were activated to divert as much water as possible into Lake Clarendon from nearby creeks during February’s rain event.

“Unfortunately, one of the pumps was impacted by ÀRRG GHEULV DQG ZHQW R൷LQH on Friday February 25,” they said.

“Seqwater crews weren’t able to immediately access WKH VLWH GXH WR ÀRRGZDWHU ´ The dam supplies water to the Central Lockyer irrigation scheme, a vital source for local producers who pay for access.

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald called on the govHUQPHQW WR ¿[ WKH SUREOHP and refund the farmers their

money.

“A casual attitude to water security is just not good enough,” he said.

The Seqwater spokesperson said the two remaining pumps diverted almost 3,500 megalitres litres of water into Lake Clarendon since Friday February 25.

“Seqwater removed the faulty pump on March 9 and has installed temporary replacement pumps, while a permanent replacement is sourced.”

The Lockyer Valley has access to more than $400 million in regional funding pools through the SEQ City Deal announced on Monday.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said the Deal included an initial investment for priority projects focussed on water resilience, water security and the region’s lifestyle.

“Water is a big issue for our community and the Deal will deliver an initial investment of $13.3 million to enhance ZDWHU VXSSO\ DQG HIÀFLHQF\ for Lockyer Valley and consider longer term planning to secure supply of water for growers in the Lockyer and Somerset regions,” she said.

“It also includes more than $105 million to improve the region’s waste infrastructure, building on the Council of Mayors (SEQ) Waste Management Plan and furthering the south-east’s transformation towards a cleaner, more sustainable region.

The SEQ City Deal is a 20year partnership between the Australian and Queensland Governments, and 11 councils which make up the Council of Mayors (SEQ) which provides a shared commitment to transform SEQ and deliver region-shaping infrastructure.

BY JACOB HAYDEN Laidley’s ‘sign pollution’ has been scrutinised by Lockyer Valley Regional Council following a grant approval for an electronic sign.

A grant requested by the rec grounds committee brought council’s attention to outdated signage on Patrick St and Edward St. Mayor Tanya Milligan called an old estate sign ‘exceptional-

ly horrible’ and ‘ugly looking’.

The other side of the sign advertises a home game for the Laidley Soccer club in 2017.

“I think we really need to address the sign pollution on a really pristine bit of green space in the heart of one of our towns, because it looks pretty disgraceful if you were a visitor,” Cr Milligan said.

“It is bloody ugly!”

Councillor Chris Wilson said there are outdated sponsorship

signs.

“Some of those businesses have not sponsored those clubs IRU ¿YH \HDUV SOXV DQG WKH\¶UH still getting great exposure,” Cr Wilson said.

Laidley Recreational Reserve Committee President Pat Byrnes said they have discussed taking down old signs.

“We need to make sure that any signs that are up are relevant to the sporting clubs,” Mr Byrnes said.

Farewell to a muchloved SES volunteer On Saturday, family, friends and colleagues said goodbye to Lowood SES volunteer, Merryl Dray, at Mt Thompson Crematorium, Holland Park.

Merryl tragically passed away while responding to a call for assistance from a family whose home was WKUHDWHQHG E\ ÀRRGZDWHU RQ 25 February 2022.

Merryl, 62, was a much-loved member of the Lowood SES Group and was a former member of the Somerset SES Unit and Kenilworth SES Group where she began her volunteering journey.

Royce represents on Minister’s council

BY GRACE CRICHTON When he started high school, Royce Goutam was too scared to speak in front of class.

Now, he speaks on assembly, is school vice-captain, and has won a coveted seat on the Ministerial Student Advisory Council.

The grade 11 Lockyer District High School student was nominated by former principal Darren Cook.

“I think he saw the determination in me,” Royce said.

“One of [the issues] that is always brought up is bullying and cyber bullying,” Royce said.

a lot of hate comments, ‘go back to your country’.”

Other topics on the table are gender discrimination and mental health.

Royce works closely with the English as a Second Language (ESL) department at school, and it was here he found the inspiration to speak up.

“When I moved to Australia, my English wasn’t the greatest,” Royce said.

“From grade seven to nine, I was scared to speak in front of the class.

“I think the change, in parWLFXODU ZDV VHHLQJ GL൵HUHQW people from the ESL standing up.”

Royce credited his fellow students, like former captain and alumi Paul Amongol, with inspiring him to step out of his comfort zone.

Kindred Spirits closing over zoning

Kindred Spirits Fernvale announced it will be closing at the end of May after it was given notice to vacate the current premises because it is not zoned for commercial use.

O’Dowd and Adrianne Moloney made a statement on Facebook on February 23 to notify customers, clients, and members of the community of the closure.

A council spokesperson said council’s involvement came about because the necessary building and planning

approvals were not in place prior to Kindred Spirit’s commencement.

“While the landowner had the opportunity to apply for the necessary approvals, it appears the landowner chose not to,” the spokesperson said.

Ms Moloney said neither

council nor the landlord are changing their minds on the issue, leaving Kindred Spirits with nowhere to go.

“The saddest part for us isn’t about not being able to run a shop, it’s about not having a place for people to come and feel emotionally safe,” Ms Moloney said.

“For example, historic owners may not have completed this process when converting homes or residential land into local shops,

Wasps swarming for ‘perfect weather conditions’ Paper wasp populations have spiked after recent weather conditions.

Gatton based Detecta Pest Control owner Brett Sommerfeld said he has seen an increase in wasps in the Lockyer.

“It’s the perfect climatic conditions for the wasps,” Mr Sommerfeld said.

“I’ve been stung more times this year than I have in years gone by.”

Senior Curator of Insects at Queensland Museum Dr Chris Burwell said paper wasps are common in warm temperatures and primarily hunt caterpillars.

“This year we’ve had lots of rainfall, lots of warm temperatures and lots of plant growth so conditions are really good for insects in general at the moment,” Dr Burwell

said.

“Maybe because we’ve got more caterpillars, we’ve got more paper wasps.”

Dr Burwell and Mr Sommerfeld recommend people to stay away from wasps where possible.

“People try to burn them… and end up doing more damage than good,” Mr Sommerfeld said.

Museum opening on track

The Toogoolawah History Museum is on track to reopen in early April.

Their plans to for a refresh have been delayed until midyear, so only minor changes have been made to the current display, apart from the installation of the amazing ÀEHUJODVV FRZ DUW VFXOSWXUH placed in the grounds.

Historical society member Beryce Nelson said the past two years were tough for everyone, and the group had not escaped the impact.

“However, some successful fundraising efforts has kept XV DÁRDW DQG ZH KDYH VRPH great initiatives planned for the future,” Mrs Nelson said.

“This is the time to renew your membership and to invite new residents and friends along to help progress our plans for 2022.

“We want to know what you would like to see happen too so come along and have your say.”

Honest sparky leaves a legacy Gatton will remember Jim Kennett as the sparky they could always rely on.

He passed away on February 18, at 93 years old.

Mr Kennett moved to Gatton in 1950 and until his retirement in 2000 was a well-known and trusted electrician.

Graham Reuter worked for Kennett’s Electrical for 33 years, beginning his apprenticeship in 1967.

“He treated us like family,” Mr Reuter said.

“I remember one time he said to call him Jim instead of Mr Kennett and it just didn’t seem right to me.

“I considered him to be a IDWKHU ¿JXUH ´ Scores of apprentices went through Mr Kennett’s workshop.

Mr Kennett was highly involved in the Gatton Show Society.

“He was there every show, never missed it,” Mr Reuter said.

“Always walking around with a screwdriver and a bit of fuse wire in his pocket.”

One of his responsibilities was turning the showground OLJKWV R൵ EHIRUH WKH ¿UHworks show.

Deborah Osborne worked for Mr Kennett for 30 years and said he showed no fear climbing the power poles at the showgrounds.

Miss Osborne said he was very honest and a hard worker.

In 2016, Mr Kennett was presented the Mayoral Award at the Lockyer Valley Australia Day Awards.

Our deepest sympathies to Jim’s family and friends.

Jim was born in interesting times around the 1928 Great Depression.

He then would have been a teenager during WWII, starting his trades when Australian manpower was stretched to the limit but I don’t think this would have hampered Jim’s development, only enhanced his abilities and genius.

This genius would regularly be on display with complex electrical, auto electrical problems to be solved and clearly enunciated to staff or client.

I had Jim explain a motor for a situation, Jim was converting atmosphere to Kpa to Psi while I was still thinking about atmosphere.

I have heard it said that Jim was small in size but giant in ability.

Jim always went out of his way to help his customers, having men and himself on site early if the job required LW DQG ZRUNLQJ ODWH WR ÀQLVK the task.

Jim was extremely generous to the local community, helping the Gatton Show Society for many years, street lights for Christmas, power for carnivals and parades.

Jim did what we all hope we can do in our lifetime, gave it his best, made a number of friends, and left the Lockyer and the world a little bit of a better place.

Jim Kennett, Gatton electrician for 50 years, passed away last month at 93 years old.

In a council statement from the time, Mayor Steve Jones said Mr Kennett was a ‘highly-respected businessman in the Lockyer Valley.’

“During his tenure, Jim employed close to 100 apprentices, which helped start the career of so many young members of the community,” Cr Jones said.

Among his clients was Gatton Sawmill owner Edgar 6WXEEHUV¿HOG Mr Kennett did all their

electrical work until he retired.

“What used to amaze me was Jim could tell me what he did 50 years ago on the switchboard,” Mr Stubbers¿HOG VDLG “I’ve heard him described as the most totally honest person that people have met.”

Even though electrician Kevin Bowe could be considered opposition, Mr Kennett was always willing

to lend a hand.

“He’d help you out wherever, there was never a bad word, never a decline on answering something or helping with something, he was just a great fellow,” Mr Bowe said.

“He was always willing to help.”

Mr Kennett was ‘exceptionally’ knowledgeable and energetic.

Mr Kennett’s funeral was held on March 16 and was interred at Toowoong cemetery, where his parents are at rest.

People of all ages can struggle with the highs and lows of their emotions.

We are constantly told that we must be happy in everything that we are involved in.

$3000 grant for electric vehicles The Federal Chamber Automotive Industries, the peak body for the automotive industry in Australia has cautiously welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement of $55 million in electric vehicle incentives.

The package which provides grants of $3,000 for electric vehicles under $58,000 is expected to provide the opportunity of owning an electric vehicle to more Queensland families and road users. The package also includes a further $10 million for electric vehicle charging infrastructure and a continuation of the introduction of zero-emission vehicles into the Queensland *RYHUQPHQW¶V ÀHHW FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the grants will be a welcome support to potential EV buyers.

“The FCAI believes the

However, Mr Weber was perplexed the sales target of 50% of new passenger vehicles sales to be zero-

emission by 2030, and 100% of new passenger vehicle sales to be zero-emission by 2036.

“The primary policy

objective is to reduce CO2 emissions and our pathway to this objective in the transport sector needs to be a holistic one. Electric vehicles alone

will not achieve this in Australia.

“The pathway to reducing emissions through to the mid2030s will rely on a range of low emission technologies that include plug-in hybrid, hybrid and even highly H൶FLHQW LQWHUQDO FRPEXVWLRQ engines in addition to pure EVs. “Improvements in fuel quality and the introduction of a broad-based and nationally consistent Road User Charge scheme, as well as a vehicle emissions target, are all needed to bring the best low and zero-emissions technology to Australia.

“We look forward to working with Governments at all levels to send these policy signals, which will be vital in achieving our emission reduction across the light YHKLFOH ÀHHW ´ 0U :HEHU added.

Futsal talent gaining ground in Gatton schools Young futsal players are getting a leg up thanks to additional training from the Australian Futsal Association (AFA).

Queensland director Chris McLeod visited four Gatton school last week, Gatton State School, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Peace Lutheran, and Lockyer District

High School (LDHS).

“Once a term for term one, two and three, I come and work within each of the schools, whether it be their teams, whether

it’s generic PE classes, or an open day,” Mr McLeod said.

“In return, these guys come to our southwest titles in early term two

which means 50 schools of kids, and then we have an academy structure.”

At LDHS last Thursday, Mr McLeod worked with the open representative team.

“We looked at team formations, primarily looking at the defensive shapes and how they would defend if they went to a championship,” he said.
