Koalas are on the move WHEN Care4esK weredent, Sparrow’s chances of survival were so low, that we chose to wait at least 48 hours before posting the story on the Care4esK Facebook page. However,
Early on Monday afternoon, Sparrow [the koala] was probably out looking for love, when he was accidentally struck by a vehicle, whilst crossing the Brisbane Valley Highway, just south of the Esk
township.
This area is one of our known local koala corridors.
Thankfully, the quick acting driver rescued him, and he was transported to a nearby vet. Sparrow was then collected by IKPS (Ipswich Koala Protection Society) and taken to the Wacol RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, where his serious injuries were assessed.
His eye is ruptured and will likely be removed. He has a fractured cheek bone. And there was blood in his abdomen. If Sparrow does survive, it will be a miracle.
The important message behind this heartbreaking story, is that it is now breeding season for koalas, so they are on the move and, they have very little road sense. Koalas are wild animals with wild animal instincts. Awareness is our responsibility.
Please drive with animal awareness at all times. Our precious wildlife already have so many threats to contend with.
We must do the best we can, to make their chance of survival easier for them.
Thank you to the many wonderful people who have helped Sparrow.

The years since 1970 have seen the emergence of the Federal Government policy called Closing the Gap, which seeks to build a bond between our two cultures. It is an admirable ambition but it has not worked. Of its seventeen elements, four have shown progress but four have fallen even further apart. The reason for this seems to be that public servants in Canberra are not aware of, or do not understand, the social, spiritual and economic wellbeing of Aboriginal people.
All this makes a Voice to Executive Government an essential part of the coming referendum. It will allow feedback about government initiatives to come to government from the people who are affected. It could take a century, or two, to build the new harmony.
But there is just one hope for the future. We must vote Yes.

Laidley resident Diane Wylie has travelled the road for the past seven years and said repairs on the road had been an arduous wait.
Funding for roads and infrastructure
LOCKYER Valley Regional
Council endorsed several nominated projects for funding through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Phase 4 (LRCIP4) during its ordinary meeting on August 16.
The Grantham Butter Factory was allocated $70,000 in Part A of the funding for works to reseal and paint a north-facing wall to prevent leaking.
Other infrastructure projects were nominated
a total of $857,079 for accessibility work, including the Laidley Youth Centre, Pioneer Village, Cultural Centre, Lake Clarendon public amenities, Gatton Depot meeting room, and Lake Dyer amenities.
Councillor Janice Holstein said some of the facilities were constructed before current accessibility standards.
“The… Accessibility Projects will bring several Council-owned community
facilities up to current accessibility standards by renewing access ramps, stairs and handrails, constructing new access ramps, and ensuring amenities blocks are accessibility compliant,” she said.
Roads needing repair and nominated for funding were Helidon’s Lockyer Creek Road, Iredale’s Spa Water Road, Upper Tenthill’s Ropehill Road, and Plainland’s Egerton Drive.

Ms Pugh said one of the struggles of planners was ‘trying to take the planning out of planning’.

Small changes: choosing the right foods can heal our bodies
DID YOU know there are foods that are good for us, and foods we should avoid?
BY SARAH LEWIN NATUROPATH
Some foods can cause brain fog, lethargy, headaches, and more. We should only eat foods high in sugar and salt occasionally, if at all. These foods taste yummy but have little to no nutritional value.
Other foods may also make us feel sick.
Dairy, and food with gluten, foods like breads and pastas can cause
for our bodies to digest. We could get bloated, tummy pains and general aches and pains when consuming these foods.
There are dairy free and gluten free options
available.
Fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes are high in nutrients.
Leafy greens, sprouts, berries, celery, and citrus, to name just few, are known to have vitamins and minerals that provide our body with nutrients to health, whilst boosting our immune system.
Eating for gut health, for digestion, and for immune support is easier than we might think.
Add spices and herbs in cooking, in particular ginger, turmeric, garlic and chilli.
Garlic, for example, aids recovery from injury, surgery and infections.

The next generation of scientists
BY JACOB HAYDEN
EAGER-MINDED students from nine primary schools gathered at Faith Lutheran College Plainland on Wednesday August 16 for the 8th instalment of the Lockyer Valley Year 5 Science Challenge, supported by Lockyer Valley Regional Council.
The most enthusiastic students from Ashwell, Blenheim, Clarendon, Flagstone Creek, Gatton, Glenore Grove, Grandchester, Prenzlau State Schools and Peace Lutheran Primary Gatton were selected to compete in the challenge, with Blenheim SS winning for its third year in a row.
Faith science and engineering teacher Ian Thompson said the challenges involved pendulums, test tubes and microscopes.
“We did some chemistry, into test tubes and tested and then graphed which drinks are better, or not
better, for students,” Mr Thompson said.

“Kids in primary schools often don’t have a lab… so it’s really good for them to use proper lab facilities like
test tubes with things changthat.”
Glenore Grove student Kaitlyn said she learned a lot.
“We had to do a pendulum challenge where we had to take the length of the string or the weight of the rocks and change it, and see how many times it swung in a minute,” Kaitlyn said.

Long Drive for drought taking off
BY GRACE CRICHTON
A CONVOY of Toyota Land Cruisers will set out from Goondiwindi this week for the annual Long Drive for Drought.
Among them will be Fernvale’s Todd Fawcett, who keenly jumped on board the annual charity drive last year.
“I’ve had Land Cruisers my whole life and as a kid,” Todd said.
“My grandparents were in the farming industry and all that, so we’ve always had them around and I’ve always had a love for them.”
The Long Drive for Drought was founded in 2019 as a fundraising initiative in association with Drought Angels.
Since then, it has raised more than $265,000 for Aussie farmers.
Looking to do his part to support the event, Todd found a creative way
to fundraise while also engaging Lockyer Valley First Nations artist Stephen

Hogarth.
Todd found a vintage 1930s icebox for sale online
and reached out to Stephen to paint it.
“Aboriginal art is so
beautiful and unique in its own way,” Todd said.
“And it’s so relevant to what we’re all talking about.
“It’s the natural colours and the harshness of it all and the roughness of it all.”
The artwork’s story is about hope, inspiration, coming together and helping people in need.
“Drought is a very hard part of any farmer’s life and we all hope for rain,” Stephen said.
“The artwork shows the dryness of the land and the roads we take.
“Each circle tells a story of the struggle, hardship, hope and the love we all have to keep going.”
The ice box will be the 2,500km trip at an event at the Birdsville pub on September 1.
The Long Drive departs Goondiwindi on August 25.

New plans to
INSUFFICIENT funding is impeding Australian authorities’ attempts to control ants, according to documents obtained by the Invasive Species Council.
The government documents detail at least a $49 funding for 2023/24 and that eradication and surveillance on the ground in Queensland this year have been cut in half from what is needed.
National Fire Ant Eradication program executive Ashley Bacon said all states, territories and the Commonwealth Government endorsed a new response plan at the July 13 Agricultural Ministers Meeting.
“The National Fire Ant Eradication Program has now commenced implementing the new response plan,” she said.
“The National Fire Ant Eradication Program respects
the budget process that each cost-share partner needs to go through and appreciates their important issue.”
So far, only Queensland ($61 million or 10.3% of the total needed for 202337) and NSW ($95 million or 16%) have made public commitments in line with the cost sharing arrangement set out in the revised work plan documents.
To achieve eradication by

over the next four years.

Matt Petty wins Community Spirit as Marburg Rural Ambassador
BY JACOB HAYDEN
MATTHEW PETTY put
it all on the table at the Queensland Rural Ambassador Awards night on Saturday August 19.
The Marburg Show Society and West Moreton Brisbane Valley 2022 Rural Ambassador took home the Community Spirit award.
Matt said he had the ‘best experience of his life’.
“It was great meeting all regions, they’re all great people and I’ve made some life-time friends out of this week,” he said.
“We’ve learnt so much through the whole experience through the likes of the AgForce team and Australian Country Choice.”
The region’s rural ambassadors toured a processing plant at Churchill, virtual farms at Pinkenba and learned about the logistics of freight at the Port of Brisbane.
Matt said the Community Spirit award recognised his
appreciation and involvement in the community, and his passion to keep improving the agricultural industry.
“I kind of laid everything out on the table and I got heard, and a lot of people were in the same boat on the
issues,” he said.
“It means so much, just to get recognition of what I’ve done throughout the last couple days and my involvement through the year at the shows.
“It was quite good to hear some nice words and feed-
back to give me that motivation to keep going and promoting the shows, especially the West Moreton Brisbane Valley Sub Chamber.
“I received a beautiful glass trophy and a knife set, and got up and said a few
words, thanked all the sponsors, judges and the committee members.”

NFF’s raising concerns over drough funding
THE NATIONAL Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Agriculture Minister Murray Watt of $38 million from the Future Drought Fund to boost the farm sector’s resilience to climate change and dry conditions.
Through the Future Drought Fund, the Federal Government will invest in six research projects undertaking long-term trials of new and emerging agriculture practices around cropping, grazing and mixed farming, to help farmers be more drought-resilient.
However, NFF Vice President David Jochinke noted the funding would primarily
be directed into research and long-term trials and while much needed, it did little for the here and now.
“We are staring down the barrel at an El Niño bringing drier conditions this growing season,” Mr Jochinke said.
“Improving long term resilience is important, but climate research can’t come
at the expense of preparing for the drought just around the corner.”
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt was the program was about advancing projects droughts.
“These projects – like crop rotations, soil manage-

ment, grazing techniques and infrastructure – will arm farmers with robust information to invest in technologies and practices that have landscapes and conditions,” he said.
Mr Jochinke said the Future Drought Fund had to continue to include projects which would directly build resilience for when the next drought hits.
“Resilience is farmers’ middle name, but we can’t outrun the increasingly severe and frequent drought cycles,” he said.
“It’s imperative the government focuses on climate change resilience but not at the expense of drought preparedness.”
Tiny Tim a Limousin miracle
TINY Time was lucky to survive his birth, so to go ahead and win Grand Champion Led Steer at the Ekka is nothing short of a miracle.
Ray Zahnow Fernvale Limousin’s award winning steer was born three weeks too early during
“When the river comes up it can wash the cattle away, so we brought them up to my mate’s place,” Mr Zahnow said.
“My mate said, the next day, ‘your cow’s had a
calf’.
Mr Zahnow said Tiny Tim was 20kg wringing wet and could not walk, so he bottle-fed him for four days.
“I came back on the fourth day and he was up on his feet, and powered on after that,” he said.
To add to his success, Mr Zahnow’s Reserve Champion Bull Scooby Doo sold for $17,000 on Saturday August 19 at the Coolabunia Limousin Bull Sale, with all 34 bulls averaging $8,300.

THE LOCKYER AND SOMERSET INDEPENDENT PAGE 38 AUGUST 23, 2023
MOORE WEEKLY STARS
August 21-27, 2023
ARIES
On Tuesday and Wednesday be on alert for confusing information, fake news and dodgy deals. Mars (your power planet), the Sun and retrograde Mercury are highlighting your health-and-wellbeing zone. So, it’s a suitable exercises that you really enjoy. Be inspired by actress Blake Lively (who turns 36 on Friday): “I really don’t like the gym. I like experiences, so I take any chance to ride a bicycle or go on a hike.”
TAURUS
Jupiter and Uranus are in your sign, plus the Sun, Mars and Mercury are visiting fellow earth sign Virgo. So, it’s time to be the practical and productive Taurus you were born to
Jupiter and Venus push you to expand your creative horizons, as you strive to make the world a better and more beautiful place. Be inspired by birthday great Mother Teresa: “The world is hungry not only for food, but also for beauty.”
GEMINI
Put on your problem-solving hat! Retrograde Venus and retrograde Mercury reignite your desire to help a friend, neighbour or family member in a creative and hands-on fashion. So, you’re keen to tackle a problem (at home or within your local community) in a strategic and (uncharacteristically) patient way. Your motto is from birthday great Mother Teresa, who was born on August 26, 1910: “Love begins by taking care of the closest ones – the ones at home.”
CANCER
Courtesy of the Sun, Mercury and Mars, the buzzword is communication. Your Crab curiosity is piqued, and you’re keen to connect and converse with a wide range of stimulating people, especially within your local community. But remember Venus is retrograde, and Mercury turns retro on Wednesday night. So, relationships will be complicated, and communication will be increasingly tricky. Smart Crabs will slow down, shut up, listen and learn!
LEO
Expect a rather wonky week for relationships
sign and Mercury starts reversing through your money zone. So, love and money are a precarious mix at the moment. Clever Cats – aim to be super patient with your partner, extra kind to your family and oh-so cooperative with your work colleagues. And keep spending to an absolute minimum, as you curb shopaholic tendencies and stick to a strict weekly budget.
VIRGO
Mercury (your ruler) starts reversing through your sign on Wednesday night. Mercury is the planet of clear thinking, communication (talking, texting and writing), transport, travel, commuting, commerce, computers, media and the internet. So – when it’s retrograde –it’s not a good time to: sign contracts; start a job or business; buy a phone, computer, car or home; launch a website; install new software; go on a business trip or embark on a holiday.
LIBRA
Do you have ridiculously unrealistic expectations about a close relationship? This week Venus (your patron planet) is in retrograde mode, and Mercury turns retrograde on Wednesday night. So, it’s time for a major reality check as you reassess the past, and then bring your full attention to the here and now. Focus on the wise words of birthday great, Mother Teresa: “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.”
SCORPIO
Scorpio is the sign of deep transformation. And this week – with Venus and Mercury both in retrograde mode – it’s time to do anything with an ‘re’ in front of it … revise, rehearse, review, remember, return, recover, reconnect. Especially in areas involving career, colleagues, peer group, hopes, goals and dreams. Wisdom for the week comes from birthday great Tori Amos: “Sometimes you have to do what you don’t like to get to where you want to be.”
SAGITTARIUS
Revisit your career goals and take steps to make them a reality. But, when it comes to close relationships, keep your cool. And avoid the temptation to over-talk and overreact. You can’t control what others say but you can control your responses. There could also be some tension between shining brightly at work and friends. If anyone can juggle, multitask and have fun, it’s a versatile and humorous Sagittarius.
CAPRICORN
Pluto is still transiting slowly through your sign, your drive to get things done. But Venus is in retrograde mode (and Mercury is about to turn retrograde) so progress will be slow. And the Sun/Saturn opposition could put you in a cranky and bossy mood, as challenges frustrate you and other people don’t do what you want them to do. Just remember, Capricorn, the only person you can control is yourself!
AQUARIUS
Have you been questioning your purpose in life? Or do you feel as if you’ve got the worries of the world on your shoulders? Take a step back and view things from a wider perspective. Doing good deeds will leave you with a warm inner glow. So, think up some dynamic ways you can help those who are less fortunate – whether locally, nationally or internationally. As Yoko Ono (a fellow Aquarian) observes: “Helping yourself is connected with helping others.”
PISCES
The Mars/Neptune and Sun/Saturn opposiso pace yourself and prioritise projects. Don’t commit to an ambitious new plan unless you have the time and motivation to follow through on your well-meant intentions. If something can be put off until another week – or completely ditched – then do so. Communicating with loved ones also looks frustrating, as Mercury starts reversing through your relationship zone.

LOCKYER VETERANS
Redlands/Logan Silver on 13th August, the hosts enjoyed a large partnership between Shane Hawley (60n/o off 52 balls) and Jason Kleidon (52 n/o off 50 balls).
Wickets fell cheaply in the middle session but Shane Samuelson, 32 off 27 balls got the innings back on track. Gary Hughes held the lower order together with 29 off 61 balls, Redlands/Logan innings never really got any momentum, with Mahendra’s pace claiming all bowled. Only Wilkinson’s smashing 51 off 35 balls in the middle order gave the innings any respectability.
Shane Samuelson claimed three of the last four wickets to overs, leaving the visitors all out for 132 off 29 overs.

TOOGOOLAWAH 11-yearold Makeea Schimke went up against the best from across the state at Chandler Swimming Pool on August 12 and 13.
Six weeks ago, Makeea moved to a Toowoomba school to train further with the Glennie Swimming Club, after driving back and forth for almost a year with her mum.
“I’m doing mornings now and most afternoons too,” she said.
She had a very good weekend at Chandler.
