Inland Rail open to consult The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Gowrie to Helidon (G2H) section of Inland Rail is currently out for public consultation and Lockyer Valley Regional Council is encouraging the community to have a voice.

Following on from the Helidon to Calvert (H2C) section, which the community reviewed earlier this year, the current draft EIS for the G2H is open for submissions prior to 25 October 2021.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said this was the community’s opportunity to consider the findings of the EIS and have their say.

“The H2C section of the Inland Rail Project is a 28km long freight railway, with 22 kilometres set to be a new corridor,” she said.

“A six-kilometre tunnel leaves Gowrie and emerges from the Range into the Lockyer Valley to the south of the existing Second Range Crossing.

“Due to the hilly terrain the tunnel is mostly on structures and embankments,

some up to 47 and 33 metres high respectively, with more than 2.1M cubic metres of fill.”

Council has identified a range of impacts of concern, which include flooding, impacts to traffic, noise and vibration, flora and fauna impacts and the contamination of groundwater.

The Independent International Panel of Experts for Flood Studies of Inland Rail in Queensland also reported on the G2H, raising a series of issues in relation to the flood modelling.

“Clearly there will be enormous impacts from these works and impacts on property holders, the environment and council roads,” Cr Milligan said.

“Council is committed to seeking the best possible outcomes for our community and will make a strong submission, but what we really need is for our residents to express their concerns and lodge a submission of their own prior to the deadline.”

“Police will be out there doing our bit, but we need road users to do theirs too.

Under 6s players show team spirit

The smallest soccer super stars won big at the end of the season when the Gatton Redbacks named the under 6s ‘Junior Team of the Year.’

Manager Danielle Herbst and coach Daniel Richardson said the children showed great sportsmanship and the players all encouraged each other.

“The friendship that has been created between every child in this team has been the most wonderful thing to see,” Ms Herbst said.

“Lots of pats on the backs and cheering from the sideline.”

For most on the team it was their first season playing soccer with the club.

the canteen and making communication a breeze, nothing was ever to much trouble.”

Ipswich Council says no to new landfill site Ipswich City Council has rejected a proposal for a new landfill at Ebenezer while supporting a proposed waste transfer and resource recovery facility.

Wanless Recycling Park sought approval to establish a new landfill and waste transfer and recycling centre.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding thanked residents for making their views on the proposal clear.

“Our community expects the highest standards of scrutiny of any new landfill proposal in Ipswich, and rightly so,” Cr Harding said.

“It is our residents who have worn the negative impacts of the waste industry time and time again.

“Thank you to the 60 community members who lodged submissions on the proposal, and made it clear that the application did not meet the expectations and targets of the State Government and Council.”

The proposal anticipated 1,000,000 tonnes of waste would be processed at the facility, with

550,000 tonnes ending up as landfill.

The Officer’s recommendation was for a part refusal of the application for the landfill and partial rehabilitation of a mining void and a part approval of the application for the Reconfigur-

ing a Lot and recycling centre components.

In moving the vote, Cr Harding highlighted the inconsistencies between the application and Council’s current planning and policy framework, including the Waste and Circular Economy

Transformation Directive.

“The Directive seeks to protect the residential amenity of our city,” Mayor Harding said.

“We are Queensland’s fastest growing city, and as Ipswich’s population continues to grow, it is no longer sustainable for

Ipswich to be the site of choice for private landfill sites. “(This proposal) is certainly not consistent with Council’s Waste and Circular Economy Transformation Directive, nor to its principles,” Mayor Harding said.

Dog rego discount extended until Sep 30 Somerset Regional Council will extend the due date for dog owners to register their dogs at the discounted rate until 30 September 2021.

Esk traffic breaches

Esk and Lowood Police were called to a single motorcycle traffic crash on Willaura Drive Coominya last week. As a result of the crash the male rider was airlifted by QAS to Hospital with serious injuries. Ipswich Forensic Crash Unit are continuing with investigations into the cause of the crash.

A 50-year-old Toogoolawah woman was issued a traffic infringement notice for Unlicenced Driving in Esk. This was the woman’s first Type 2 Traffic Offence.

A 30-year-old Everton Hills man was intercepted at Northbrook Parkway and as a result Police are investigating Drug offences that were located in the vehicle.

A 54-year-old Peachester man was issued a traffic infringement notice for driving an Unregistered Motor Vehicle in Esk. A 45-year-old Gregors Creek man was issued a traffic infringement notice for driving an Unregistered Motor Vehicle in Esk. A 34-year-old Esk man was issued a traffic infringement notice for Driver not having Proper Control of Vehicle in Esk. Sgt Justin Willcocks said every hazard on the road has an impact on how your car will behave.

“When the conditions outside the vehicle change, you need to adjust the way you drive. Make road safety the priority for you and your fellow road users,” he said.

A word from Bruce As the COVID vaccine rollout ramps up I wonder whether the governments are more obsessed with the jab and not the job.

I have just arrived back from a trip on The Ghan, the legendary train that runs from the top to the bottom of Australia between Darwin and Adelaide and what a wonderful experience it was.

However, the thing that really hit home to me was how tourism has been left high and dry.

In what could only be described as a tragedy we saw empty restaurants in both Darwin and Adelaide and The Ghan was only at half capacity.

A great passenger experience but really difficult to watch as the staff don’t know when their next shift

will be.

The lockdowns in the major markets of New South Wales and Victoria mean numbers have been severely hampered in tourism.

One young waiter I think summed it up perfectly when he said the week-on week-off shift has become week on until whenever I am called again as the companies try to share the severely reduced workload across the entire workforce.

The one thing we can all do and should do, is go on a trip, anywhere, and see our wonderful country.

If the one positive to come from COVID is we all holiday in our own country and not overseas then that can’t be all bad.

Inland Rail Project noise The Inland Rail Project proposes to run very long freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane, passing through the town centres of both Gatton and Forest Hill on the way. By 2040, this could happen every 45 minutes, day and night. The noise of their passing is likely to be severely disruptive and have a negative effect on property values. Distress will only grow with time as rail traffic increases.

The design engineers became fully aware of the problem through a detailed study. The only solution available to them was to finish construction of the rail line and then to consider the actual degree of public dissatisfaction.

How did this unfortunate situation emerge? We are not alone.

A review of the Inland Rail Project by a federal Senate committee received multiple submissions, particularly from rural NSW centres, with complaints similar to ours about the location of the rail-line path.

The review submission by the NSW Farmers Association explains the cause of the situation. The design of the Inland Rail is constrained by Australian Government rules that were imposed right at the outset, prior to any informative design work, and political in nature. The rules are: Keep the cost below $10 billion, kKeep the travel time to less than 24 hours ,keep construction time below five years.

The cost limit makes it difficult to purchase land for altered rail paths outside affected townships.

The construction time limit leaves little room for design and acquisition of alternative rail paths.

Altogether, design engineers do not have the time, money or capacity to respond reasonably to identified issues by making necessary changes. Unless the Australian Government amends its current rules, necessary changes will not happen.

Bob Fifoot, Gatton As people continue to suffer the mental health effects of the pandemic Red Cross is reminding readers there are things they can do now to regain a sense of control, and prepare for the inevitable disasters ahead.

New research by Australian Red Cross has found that two in five Australians’ mental health has been hit by Covid, and a similar number say they feel less hopeful about the future. Some 37% feel less secure and safe.

This week is our annual campaign to encourage people to prepare ahead for disasters, as the better prepared people are, the better their experience when a disaster inevitably hits. Better preparation also leads to a better recovery.

Hayfever Hay fever is the common name for allergic rhinitis. It is an allergic reaction in the nose, throat and eyes. Hay fever often occurs in spring and summer, when it is caused by airborne pollens from trees, plants and grasses.

A variety of medicines can help relieve and prevent the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. There are self-care measures you can take too. Most medicines are available from a pharmacist without a prescription.

Hay fever is usually caused by inhaling pollens that are present in the air. Some people have symptoms of allergic rhinitis all year round. Constant symptoms can be caused by allergens such as animal hair, moulds, house dust mites and cockroaches.

Some medicines for allergic rhinitis should not be used by children, pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with certain medical conditions. Always ask a pharmacist or doctor for advice.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis include: • sneezing • runny nose • blocked nose • itching nose, ears, mouth or throat • puffy, itchy, watery and red eyes • headaches • post-nasal drip (mucus from the nose and sinuses runs down the back of the throat), which can cause coughing • reduced sense of smell and taste • snoring • feeling tired, run-down, irritable. Hay fever symptoms are often worse in the mornings, on windy days and after thunderstorms (when the amount of pollen in the air is highest).

An allergic reaction in the nose can also cause sinus problems, including pain and pressure around the cheeks, eyes and forehead. People who get allergic rhinitis often also suffer from other allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema or hives (itchy, lumpy skin). The symptoms of these conditions may appear or worsen when the allergic rhinitis symptoms appear.

Medicines for allergic rhinitis include: • Antihistamines -reduce allergic reactions in the body. They can help relieve itching, sneezing, and nose and eye symptoms • Decongestants – can clear a blocked nose or sinus congestion (do not use for more than 5 days in a row) • Corticosteroid nose sprays – allergic rhinitis involves inflammation of the lining of the nose.

Corticosteroids can reduce or prevent this inflammation • Nasal saline sprays and washes, eye drops and pain-relieving medication Visit your pharmacist on more self-care advice on treating hay fever.

Men’s shed gives new life to toy

An old rocking horse has been given new life thanks to the Withcott Men’s Shed.

The shed was approached by a Withcott woman to restore her childhood toy and the team brought it back to its former glory.

It is estimated the horse is from the 1950s or early 1960s and had clearly been well loved.

Men’s Shed member John Haylock said they tried to keep as many of the original parts but some parts were made anew.

“The saddle and bridle were completely buggered,” he said.

“There was no mane, no tail.”

A new saddle and bridle were made and donated by saddler Wayne Clarke.

There were multiple layers of paint to be stripped and repainted.

“She’s done a great job I think,” Mr Haylock said.

Structurally, most of the original frame was sound but needed a fresh coat of paint and one replacement.

“One of the legs were com-

ing off, the others were loose, so they’ve been pulled off and put back on,” Mr Haylock said.

It is one of the first major restoration projects completed by the new men’s shed, who opened officially last year but

started in earnest earlier this year.

As part of the Steve Jones Community Shed, much of the facilities and machinery needed for the men’s shed was funded by grants.

Lockyer Valley Regional

Council Community Grants Program provided $2000 to buy a storage shed.

From the Federal Government Stronger Communities Grant, $9600 was used to install cladding and sound deadening on the eastern wall.

The Men’s Shed Association of Queensland provided $3333 to install electronic openers on the rear roller doors of the shed .

Backyard Basement of Withcott provided $1000 to install a dust filter.

Lessons in leadership

For Bayley Moore, leadership is about being approachable and respectable.

This belief was cemented when the Laidley State High School student spent a day shadowing Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan.

“I’m running for school captain at the moment, and one of the things I put in my speech is that I try and be approachable to everyone,” Bayley said.

“Don’t think of me as your school captain, or in this case as Tanya as the mayor, but actually like a friend, a person on the street you can go up to and talk to.”

He sees the role of school captain, similar to the mayor, as someone who has a voice to help out.

During his day with Cr Milligan last Thursday, Bayley was surprised at the

amount of time they spent out and about.

“I don’t know why but I thought it would be more sitting in the office,” he said.

“Tanya’s out there in the community.

Bayley plans to take this philosophy of approachability and relatability into his career.

“I’m looking at joining the military and doing a military police role,” he said.

“About a month ago I went down to Brisbane and did the defence force interviews.

“Now I’m just waiting until I turn 17 so I can sign up and go to boot camp.

“I’m not a sitting at a desk person, I’m more of an outside, hands-on person, which is also why military police would be good because you’re outside dealing with people.”

Little lemonade stand makes big bucks for charity

Riley’s lemonade stand proved a sweet success on Saturday with hundreds of dollars raised for charity.

His stand at DRHomes’ open day in Plainland raised $339 for Ronald McDonald House and DRHomes donated a further $500.

Riley’s mother Rebecca Pullen said they lost count of the number of cups of lemonade they sold.

“We were trying to calculate how many cups we sold, but we think it was over 100 cups,” she said.

Riley’s lemonade stand raised hundreds for charity on Saturday.

“Everyone is getting behind it.

“People were driving from Ipswich just to come and get his lemonade.”

Garden Competition Winners Somerset Gardens will be open to the public this weekend.

The winners of the 2021 Somerset Garden Competition have been announced.

Somerset Regional Council organised the competition with support from Kilcoybased home garden innovator, Searles Garden Products, who sponsored the competition and associated open gardens program.

Council received 14 entries in the competition, now in its fifth year.

Desert plants attract interest UQ PhD student Fernanda Caro visited Peter Bevan and plans to research the eromphila plants along the rail trail.

The eromophila plants currently flowering and flourishing along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at Lowood have attracted the attention of a researcher from the University of Queensland.

PhD student Fernanda Caro visited Peter Bevan recently to discuss the

plant and her interest in researching the potential of the plant’s fruit.

She plans to research the provenance of the fruit and its potential to assist with land restoration, particularly on former landfill or mining sites.

Mr Bevan said eromophila means “desert lover”,

and while he has had great success with propagating plants from cuttings, propagating plants from the seed or fruit of the bush was less successful.

Mr Bevan has long held an interest in propagating the plant and has collected specimen plants from across Australia.

“It’s a plant that does well in arid country and it has flourished here in Lowood,” he said.

Of the thousands of native trees and shrubs planted along the trail at Lowood, he estimates there at least a hundred different eromophila species.

First class bull riders at Mulga It was a night of thrills and spills at the jam-packed Mulga Bullride on Friday night.

Cowboys from across the state and as far as Darwin came to Mulgowie to compete in open, novice and junior categories.

National Rodeo Association chairman Jason Hall said the riding on the night was first class.

“We had seven of the top 10 in the bull riding standing all there,” Mr Hall said.

“There’s a crop of good young riders coming through at the moment.”

Mr Hall said some of the best bull riders come from southeast Queensland, Zane Hall, 19, from Athol won the open bullride.

Lowood’s Morgan Zywenberg took out the top

“You don’t usually see that

many good bull riders,” Mr Hall said.

“Any one of the four riders who placed one to four in the open bull ride was good enough to win anywhere else.”

Charity Campdraft on this weekend

The Tenthill Creek Charity Camp draft is on this Saturday from 8am at the Winning Edge Training Centre, and organiser Keith Williamson said the event is all about giving back to kids doing it tough.

“I had a magical childhood and have been very fortunate, so I wanted to find a way to give back to kids that are doing it hard,” Mr Williamson said.

“We will have different age groups and different skill groups throughout the day, ranging from 8–13-year olds and 13–17year olds before the main events get underway.

“We are also hosting encouragement events that welcome anyone wanting

to experience what campdrafting is all about.”

Mr Williamson said while there is no entry fee, a gold coin donation is encouraged, with all proceeds going towards the Act for Kids charity.

“In the afternoon there will be an after-party with entertainment from 4-time Golden Guitar winner, Tootie Hiles,” Mr Williamson said.

“We will also be having a barbecue which people can enjoy from $10 a head.”

Mr Williamson expects 150 head of cattle at the event and said the support he has received from the community has been amazing.

“It’s really opened my eyes up and opened my heart up,” he said.

Proceeds from the event will go to Act for Kids.

Free workshop to build drought resilience

A free Drought & Climate Adaption Workshop is being held in Gatton at the Lake Apex Function Centre on Friday October 1, with morning tea and lunch provided.

The Bureau of Meterology has predicted rainfall for October to December is likely to be above median for much of the NT, SA, Queensland, NSW, Victoria and eastern Tasmania with the chance of exceeding median greater than 60%. Much of south-east mainland Australia shows a greater than 80% chance. Conversely, parts of northern WA and western Tasmania are likely to have below median rainfall (with the chance of exceeding the median less than 40%.

The pattern for the months of October and November is similar to the three-month outlook, though the likelihood of exceeding the median rainfall for the eastern two-thirds of Australia is higher in October, and lower in November.

Isuzu is no stranger to increasing prices, releasing the new generation D-Max with a notch up not long ago. For MU-X it means prices shift around $4000 to $10,000 north depending on which of the three trims you shop for.

Justifying this price hike from Isuzu is what the Japanese maker calls a move upmarket. It was first seen with the D-Max and most of that comes from new safety technology and equipment.

With MU-X based on D-Max it has the same drivetrain options, the same standard rear mechanical differential for

4×4 models, and a full suite of modern safety gear that scores a five-star ANCAP rating.

The 3.0-litre turbo diesel continues with 140kW and

450Nm through a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is a claimed 8.3L/100km on the combined cycle.

Steering is lightweight

which is good for low speed moving in the city, but it lacks the precision of a monocoque SUV, a symptom of both the sturdy ladder-frame chassis and

electrically assisted rack for the automated steering assist.

Isuzu’s D-Max ute uses a three or five-leaf rear suspension while the MU-X has a five-link coil suspension

setup that’s even softer.

Like in the ute, off-road traction control has been improved and so it is better at getting torque quickly to wheels with useable grip and

Other equipment inside includes a 9.0-inch touchscreen. It has wireless Apple

CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity which you would want to use as the stock system isn’t pretty.

There is a depth of configurations and plenty of settings though, and it has a sat-nav built in. The driver also gets a 7.0-inch digital screen for showing things like the digital speedo and active safety systems.

The leather upholstery trim is as nice as you’d find in this segment and the bolstering on seats is good; if you’re familiar with the D-Max the cabin layout is mostly the same.

For towing, touring, off-roading and getting out and about the new Isuzu MU-X is more comfortable and safer than before.

Hawks epic grand final wins The Gatton Hawks Women on the charge during the grand final

Both the Gatton Hawks Women’s and the Reserve Grade have been crowned champions after their respective grand final wins at Clive Berghofer Stadium in Toowoomba last Sunday.

In what shaped to be a mouth-watering clash, the Gatton Hawks Women faced the only side to inflict their single loss all season, the Warwick Women’s Cowboys.

In a dominant display, the Hawks led the entire game and triumphed 30-10, solidifying their place in Gatton rugby league history.

Centre for the Gatton Hawks Women, Meghan Clarke, said the win capped off an amazing and history making season.

“I am so happy and proud, we worked hard all season

and it paid off,” she said.

“It was such a good experience, and this is the first time the Gatton Hawks have had a women’s side so to win the competition is amazing.

“A few of us come from footy backgrounds but a lot of us hadn’t played footy much before so it’s a bloody good experience.

“We all played probably our best game and it was a real team performance.”

Courtney-Lee Nolan was named player of the match after an outstanding performance that saw her score three tries.

The reserve Grade side joined the women’s side as champion in the afternoon, beating the Wattle Reserves 32-18 in another tough but dominant display.

“The boys were fantastic and showed heaps of improvements throughout the year.”

Mr Schulze was also thankful for the support received by those who came to the final.

“We had a great turnout, we took a 50-seater bus full of supporters from the school and you could hear

the support through the whole game, it was great,” he said.

Mr Schulze said the side will learn from the experience, with most of the boys staying in the side ahead of next year’s competition.

“We had a squad of 21 in total and 11 of them are in the team next year, and the under 15’s won the Darling Downs competition this year too, so we will be super competitive again.”

BOWLS ESK BOWLS CLUB NEWS The Esk Bowls Club held their Pub Day last Tuesday. Many Thanks to our Sponsor Joe from the Esk Grand Hotel. The winners were A & V Cameron, P Jenkins and D. Knopke. Runner Up were C. Daniels, J Baldwin, L. Peters, B. Ziscke. 1st round winner D Currie, R Granger R. Cook and A. Simpson, 2nd round winner were L. Cole J. & D McLeod, R. Fisher all were presented with their prizes by Phil from The Grand Hotel. Congratulations to all.

We would also like to Thank the Esk Community Op Shop for all the help they have given us and all the other organizations around our district. We all are hoping another building can become available so you can continue carrying out the great work you do.

Summer Social Bowls will be starting on the 3rd of October in the mornings 9.00 for 9.30 start. all welcome to come and have a game.

Bingo is on Thursdays Eyes Down at 11.00 am.

TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS CLUB NEWS Sunday 12th September. We had 12 players on the green with two games of Triples. Winners were Cindy Mills, Robert Griffin and Linda Winkeler, Runners Up were Neville Finlay, Lyn McWhirter, and Wayne Thompson. Raffle winner was Cindy Mills Monday 13th September. We had six ladies play at Kilcoy for the Mayors Cup they were Kim Dorman, Lyn McWhirter, and Colleen Heath, plus Linda Winkeler, Cindy Mills and Dot McViegh, they had a great day with a lovely luncheon as always, but Kilcoy won the Trophy this year congratulations Kilcoy. Will look forward to next year’s challenge at Lowood, Tuesday 14th September. We had a team go to Esk for their Pub Day they were Keith McWhirter, Gerrit Winkeler, Len Smyth and Kim Dorman, with two wins we didn’t get the margins for the trophies but enjoyed two very competitive games plus a wonderful luncheon thanks Esk for the invite.

Wednesday 15th September. We had a team go to the Woodford Triples, they were Keith McWhirter, Colleen Heath and John Greany , two great games but no cigar this time , Thanks for the invite Woodford.

Thursday 16th September. We had 6 players turn out for social bowls, a great game of competitive triples with the winners being Gerrit Winkeler , Phil Gregory and Neville Finlay , todays fruit Tray winner was Neville Finlay.

On Sunday 19th September two games were played in our 2021 B Grade Singles Finals. Results were Len Smyth (25) def Gerrit Winkeler (13) and John Greany (25) def Neville Finlay (11). Congratulations to Neville for a great game considering he has only been bowling since July 21. Raffle winner for the day was Keith McWhirter.

Our next Pub Day will be held on 5th October.

Our next scheduled club meeting will be held on Sunday 10th October. All members are encouraged to attend and put forward any suggestions they may have in respect to the running of our club.

Members please note: Our Annual Police Charity Day has been deferred until 26th October.

To ensure that we have other clubs visit Toogoolawah Bowls Club, it is essential that we are also represented at their clubs. Please make yourself available to represent Toogoolawah to ensure we are able to stay in the loop and remain viable. Don’t just leave it to the willing few. If you haven’t renewed your membership, please do so ASAP and get involved.

To all residents of and visitors to the Brisbane Valley. Come along to our Social Days on Thursdays and Sundays to enjoy a game which gives you plenty of exercise and social networking. That invitation also extends to all ex-members who may like to re-join, and for those non players who may like to give it a go, the first game is on us. At a cost of $8.00 per game, sport and relaxation does not come cheaper than that. Age is not a barrier to playing and it is certainly not an excuse for not being involved or getting fit.

SCHOOL SIDE MAKES STATE FINALS HISTORY The Lockyer District High School rugby league side made the NRL Trophy State Final last week at Dolphin Oval in Redcliffe against St Augustine’s Cairns.

Sadly, the side went down in a nail biter after the Cairns school boys scored two tries in the last four minutes of the game to clinch the narrowest of victories, 20-18.
