LINVILLE COMES TO LIFE PAGE 6

HAILED OUT BY JACOB HAYDEN

A RECENT catastrophic weather event has caused an estimated $50 million in damage to Lockyer Valley producers.

On National Agricultural Day, November 17, Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz was joined by the leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud, State

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald, Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan and local farmers as he toured cropping sites which suffered significant damage. The hailstorm on November

10 left the region mourning and the landscape scarred. “The storm, measuring approximately 5 kilometres in width, descended upon the Valley on that fateful Friday CONTINUES PAGE 3

CONGRATULATIONS to the graduating classes of 2023. Several schools sent their graduates off with a bang at formals last week, some in September, and once again it was so wonderful to capture them on the red carpet on this special day. Formals are one of the highlights of the year for me. Not just because of

the fashion – which I am here for – but also for the evident community spirit which surrounds our young people as they begin a new chapter of their lives. I hope you enjoy our formals feature (pages 19-30), highlighting a selection of photos from Laidley, Lockyer District, Lowood, Toogoolawah, Kilcoy, and Rosewood high schools and Faith Lutheran College.

There are more photos on our website and all these photos are available to purchase. To our school leavers, congratulations again, I wish you all the best, and thank you for the contributions you made to your school and the wider community.

Enough is Enough I DON’T know about you but I am sick and tired of politicians making promises to get elected, promises they never ever intend to keep or deliver on, just look at the present mess we are in whilst our PM dances around the world sipping champagne on every red carpet he can find handing out our taxpayer dollars in the billions to all and sundry when we, the people who elected him into Government are facing cost of living financial ruin at home and quite frankly he and his Government don’t give a dam. If the Albanese Government cared grim Jim Chalmers would cut the Fuel Excise Tax for a start but he won’t even do that. Seriously folks, we have to consider other alternatives to elect into Government, voting for the same old Major Parties is just voting for more of the same, broken promises and Governments that simply don’t listen. We need to breathe new life into the Halls of Parliament at both a State and Federal level giving ourselves more choice of

political parties and candidates by making elections more party competitive and make Politicians work for our Vote and keep their promises, so I will be looking at voting for the Independents and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation next time around. They certainly can’t do any worse than the disgraceful lot we have in power at the moment at both State and Federal levels. Desley Daley Mount Hallen

at Pete’s Barber Shop Gatton, the Cannan family are proud to be celebrating the end of an era on Monday 27 November. Gatton’s longest running business was more than just a way to make a living for Peter Cannan and his family, it was a way to connect with their community and loyal customers, many of whom were close friends. Natalie Cannan said she would love for customers to join her for her final day in the barbershop on 27 November. “We are so grateful for all the support we’ve received over the years and I can’t thank the community enough,” she said. “I’ve spent most of my life running in and out of this shop since I was a kid while my Dad was working, and eventually learning to cut hair here with my sister Jacqui. The barbershop first opened next to Byrnes Butcher Shop in 1934 by Tim Heath, before moving to Hunter’s Arcade in 1938 where it still stands today. Peter, or as many called him ‘Clippers’, built fond relationships with his loyal

customers throughout his career, travelling as far as Brisbane hospital to cut hair. His journey started as an apprentice with Tim in September 1960. Fellow barber, Lisle Thomas, said he jumped at the chance when Tim offered him an apprentice in 1952. The apprentices earned just 2 pounds and 14 shillings a week. A haircut at the time would set you back two shillings, and a shave would cost one-and-a-six shillings. Tim retired and sold the business to Peter and the late Barry McKay on 26 November 1969. The pair of them ran the business together for 27 years until Barry retired on 4 May 1996. Peter continued to run the business with his wife Lorraine and celebrated 53 years of working in the barbershop in 2013. He officially retired and sold the family business to his daughter Natalie in June 2015, who hasn’t put the clippers down since. Pete’s Barber Shop Gatton

Where do we grow from here?

FROM PAGE 1 afternoon,” Mr Buchholz said. “Reports indicate that winds reached speeds in excess of 100 kilometres per hour, while the hail fell with such intensity and volume that sections of the Lockyer Valley, particularly around Laidley and Forest Hill, resembled the snow-covered slopes of the Australian Alps.” Mr McDonald said the community was used to drought and floods, but not weather like this. “The way in which the winds was in different directions… spiralling at such a rate - some of the farmers, their weather station devices go to 180km an hour and it was above that here, right in the eye of the storm,” Mr McDonald said. Mr Littleproud said there was an estimated $30 million damage to crops, and a further $20 million in infra-

structural damage. “Unfortunately, many growers were already struggling after floods and with vegetable prices at an all-time low.” Lake Clarendon farmer Tim Linnan said the storm ‘totalled everything’ they

were growing. His farm was producing 12-15,000 boxes of broccolini a week, worth $80,000, and Mr Linnan estimated he lost close to $2 million without factoring future recovery. “Now we’ve got 80 workers that have got no jobs for

Council greenlights industrial park LOCKYER Valley Regional Council approved the development of a new industrial park for Gatton in their ordinary meeting on November 15. The currently vacant land on the corner of Freemans Rd and Tenthill Creek Rd will house four tenancies suited to low to medium impact industries. Councillor Janice Holstein said it was a ‘terrific

development for the Gatton area’. “As we know, the bulk of the commercial development happening is at Plainland so it’s really a good thing that we’re getting some in that area in Gatton,” she said. “That development is going to go a long way for the Gatton region, particularly for jobs and people.” The four tenancies will

be single story with a mezzanine level. The application included extensive landscaping to provide screening between the complex and the adjoining Gatton Historical Village. The officers report noted there were no properly made submissions during the public consultation period of August to September. GRACE CRICHTON

also visited several affected properties on November 18. “Lockyer Valley growers are among the best in the state and are key suppliers of the nation’s best fresh produce,” Mr Furner said. “It’s important these growers know that we have their backs with loans and freight subsidies to help them get back to production as soon as possible.” The storm sadly took the life of a Lockyer Waters woman. “I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mrs Joy Martin, the life partner of Colin Greenwood, who tragically lost her life during the tumultuous weather conditions, crushed by a falling tree while attending to her horses,” Mr Buchholz said. Mr Furner urged producers to contact DAF on 13 25 23 and ask for an Individual Disaster Stricken Property declaration.

Club donation to Ronald McDonald House BY JESSE HAMILTON

THE Porters Plainland Hotel Social Club has donated $1,500 to Ronald McDonald House from the proceeds of their weekly bingo event. The donation is the third major donation made by the social club in 2023, with contributions also made to Lifeline and Cancer Council Australia. Porters Plainland Hotel general manager Mel Porter said the club decided on Ronald McDonald House after it was suggested by a local family. “The social club support ranges from very specific local projects, or if they know of someone who’s going through a hard time, they’ll select a charity that will best support what they’re going through,” she said. >> LVRC BRIEFS Gatton Landfill Cell 5 now complete AFTER six months of site works, the construction of the new landfill cell in Gatton is now complete. The $3 million project included extensive earthworks at the site, located at Fords Road, Adare and provides a total waste capacity of 150,000m3. Lockyer Valley Regional Council (LVRC) Waste Portfolio and Deputy Mayor Jason Cook thanked local contractor BeneTerra for their seamless completion of the project, which is estimated to take around seven years to fill at current waste volumes and fill rates. “Once the Gatton Landfill is full, we will have to start transporting waste to a commercial landfill outside the region which carries additional transport costs,” Cr Cook said. “While landfilling is necessary, it is expensive and the more time we can get out of our landfill sites, the better we will be.”

Heritage railway not offering bang for ratepayers’ buck BY GRACE CRICHTON LOCKYER Valley Regional Council (LVRC) has withdrawn from the Spring Bluff Railway Station Trust, raising concerns with the sustainability of the current management arrangements and financial benefit. In recent years, LVRC’s contribution to the Trust was $40,000 per year. Finance Portfolio Councillor Chris Wilson said the rail line itself formed the border between the two councils with the tourist attraction sites falling on the Toowoomba side. “The Toowoomba side, that’s where the tourist attraction essentially is and our side basically hosts a carpark,” he said. “I think for our financial contribution we’ve been making over the last three or four years, I just think we’re seeing little to no return for our ratepayers.” The railway station sits on the northwest edge of the Lockyer Valley, sharing

its border with Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC), and since 1995 has been managed by the Trust comprising of local councils and Queensland Rail. The report presented noted no meetings of the Trust

were called between July 2022 and July 2023. TRC Environment and Community Committee Chair Cr James O’Shea said they would investigate options for the Trust. “TRC is aware of the now

formal decision made by Lockyer Valley Regional Council to withdraw from the Spring Bluff Trust Management Committee,” he said. “Spring Bluff remains a significant historical site

and recreational area for the region. “Council will now work through a range of options in consultation with Queensland Rail to determine the future operation of the Trust.”

>> SRC BRIEFS Esk car park DA SOMERSET Regional Council (SRC) will appoint planning consultants to prepare a development application for an additional off-street car park in Esk. The additional off-street car park will be located next to Lions Park and will provide more parking for those accessing Mount Glen Rock hiking trails. Somerset SES funding Council welcomed a cash injection of $1M from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services into local SES. Council has worked with Somerset SES groups to identify priority needs that the QFES funding could be spent on, with the result being a list of thirty eligible projects. SRC seeking funding Queensland Premier Anastacia Palascczuk stated Queensland’s 65 regional councils would share in $300M in program funding for essential community infrastructure projects. However, SRC was advised it was not eligible to apply in the 2024-2027 round. Council resolved to write to the Premier to highlight its omission from the funding program and to seek an extension to support the region’s need for essential infrastructure and regional economic development activities. Kerbside waste survey SRC waste contractors conduct a yearly audit of kerbside collection waste to determine how well waste in red and yellowed lidded bins is segregated. The annual survey showed a higher percentage of contamination of the recyclable bins occurred in the norther area of the region (22.4% compared to 13.5%).

Heritage and art at heart of Linville THE FOURTH annual Linville Heritage and Art Festival celebrated the history and culture of the Somerset village on November 18 and 19. An initiative of the Linville Progress Association, the festival was a village-wide celebration of the local history and its creative community. Artists painted Linville scenes for the Linville Art Prize, won by Margaret Budd. Local businesses Linville Hotel, Linville Store, and The Picnic Society showed visitors true country hospitality with plenty of food and

entertainment. The village’s history of the railway, logging, and cattle were displayed in the restored railway station thanks to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Ambassadors. Total Sawmilling and Timber sponsored chainsaw artist Luke Sheehan to create garden-themed totem, and Rosie O’Brien created a mosaic birdbath, both of which were added to the community garden. Christmas kicks off at Laidley Carnival

CHRISTMAS is right around the corner and there’s no better way to kick off the festive season than at the Laidley Christmas Carnival. The fun kicks off from 6pm on Friday November 24 as the carnival takes over Patrick St. Event organiser Anna Ratcliffe said the night would be

filled with ‘fun and frivolity’ for the whole family. “We’ve booked a giant slide which is designed for the bigger kids, we have the rock climbing wall which has been a staple and proved very popular over the years,” she said. “For the little kids we have balloon tying… and the com-

munity’s got on board with the childcares, other community groups, playgroups, and NDIS providers… they’re going to be doing activities as well for the kids.” The main street will be buzzing with market stalls, food stalls, twilight trading, and a ham wheel from 6:30pm with 15 draws.

“There’s twilight trading from numerous businesses in town who are wanting to get involved and support the community who have supported them through the year,” Ms Ratcliffe said. “Because it’s run through the Chamber of Commerce, it’s about them supporting the businesses and the business-

sponsors and supporters who made the event possible. The event, especially the ride hire, does not come cheaply, so it’s thanks to big sponsors covering these costs which made the free community event possible. “It’s a community event and it is about supporting the community,” she said.

Drop bears spread the word BY JACOB HAYDEN

A DOZEN koalas were spotted falling from the sky on Sunday November 19. Several female skydivers donned koala onesies to raise awareness for the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) as part of Toogoolawah’s Skydive Ramblers Sky Sisters festival running from November 18 to 25. Sky Sisters organiser Susie McLachlan said Sunday’s event aimed to create some exposure for the AKF. “Gem Hodges is one of the participants coming and she felt very strongly about the Australian Koala Foundation, and she rallied about a dozen girls who have gone and bought koala onesies,” Mrs McLachlan said. “We’re hoping we can get them some traffic to their website [savethekoala.com]

and to their foundation.” Mrs McLachlan said there were not many female skydivers in Australia and the Sky Sisters festival provided a chance for women to skydive together and support worthy causes. “There’s something about women coaches and instruc-

tors training and mentoring women skydivers that’s really beautiful and powerful,” she said. “We are also supporting the Esk Hospital and Blush Foundation from the Toowoomba Hospital on Thursday [November 23] by dressing up in pink.”

Laidley local celebrates 100th birthday

GOOD health and hard work have contributed to Ivy Olm’s longevity and vitality. The life-long Laidley local celebrated her 100th birthday on November 9. Ivy was born at the Laidley Hospital on November 9, 1923. She was the eldest daughter of six children born to Hermann and Beatrice Ziebell. “We had no electricity, only kerosene lights, and no fridge whatsoever,” Ivy said. “We had no cars, we had horse and sulky.” As a young girl Ivy got her first job as a domestic and cook for Charles and Eva Hooper, the local solicitor, who were very good to work for. Her ambition took her to the Railway Hotel doing the same work. At 27 she married Edwin Lester (Joe) Olm from Brigalow. He had come to Laidley to his Aunt Marguerite and Uncle Adolf Liedloff, the blacksmith. They decided to live at Caloundra where her husband’s brother lived. After three years they returned to Laidley and took up a milk run. This brief stint was the only time in her 100 years where she has lived away from Laidley. “Other places are nice, but always go back to Laidley,” she said. When bottled milk came in, they sold the milk run and Joe worked on the railway

line. They had one daughter, Elaine. Ivy ended up working at Tabeel Lutheran Aged Care in the laundry where she also took on the cook’s role for six weeks while a staff member was on holidays.

Later on, the Laidley Hospital called on her to be a domestic worker, doing the cooking for four days while the cook was on days off. When the cook got married Ivy became the full-time cook. In retirement, Ivy volun-

teered at the op shop for 10 years. Ivy taught herself to knit, sew, crochet and do smocking, which was to be her passion. She won many prizes in the local shows as well as at Chinchilla show.

Her cakes and slices were always in demand. So too was her sewing, knitting, alterations, and mending, all of which she did at no cost. She loved helping people. To that extent, she looked after her parents, did their

shopping, housework and washing. She also made them cakes for the visitors on the weekends. Ivy joined the Laidley Seniors Citizens and was a member for 30 years, from the first day it started to the last day it finished, and never missed a day. She helped in the kitchen and got cups of tea for people. She enjoyed the club very much. She volunteered for the Laidley Show Society for 40 plus years, running the lucky envelope stall, working at the Christmas carnival, some catering for a subchamber meeting and various other jobs. Also she played indoor bowls for the Laidley club for 25 years. Ivy has been very lucky to have good health all her life. She puts it down to no smoking, no alcohol and eating good food. Also, she said that hard work never hurt her. Still in good health, Ivy celebrated her birthday with extended family and friends at Porters Plainland Hotel on November 9. Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan brought the Mayoral chain for Ivy to wear, an honour she bestows on centenarians for their milestone birthday. Ivy said the Mayor’s gesture was ‘very special’. CONTRIBUTED BY IVY’S FAMILY

LOCKYER Valley Regional Council recently finished its Fox Den Detection and Destruction Project. Lockyer Valley Regional Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said the project was conducted at locations of known fox attacks. “The properties were selected from those council

had received correspondence regarding fox issues, including attacks on pets, chickens, ducks, cats and sheep,” he said. “Council engaged contractor Bellden Environmental Services to perform the service using detection dogs specifically trained in seeking and detecting active fox dens. “Once located, the dens

Response plan puts bite on fire ants SOMERSET Regional Council met with state government representatives of Biosecurity Queensland, the Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce and the National Fire Ant Eradication Program to discuss the Fire Ant Response Plan 2023-2027.

Somerset Regional Councillor Helen Brieschke said the new response plan was developed to have greater impact through a partnership arrangement between the state government and south east Queensland councils.

“Under this partnership, self-management is being suggested as a key component, and while I welcome action on this front, we need to understand what the cost and resourcing implications are for Somerset Regional Council,” she said.

were monitored with surveillance cameras. “Following the surveillance, all the located dens were collapsed to discourage any further activity within these targeted locations. The detection dogs surveyed six locations, with 15 dens identified and collapsed to help protect livestock, wildlife and pets. LVRC

Notice of Lockyer Valley and Lower Lockyer Irrigators Meeting

IRRIGATORS are invited to a meeting on November 29 to discuss the review of the Moreton Water Plan. The meeting will be held at the Gatton Shire Hall from 5pm to 9pm. Irrigators have been aware of Federal and State Governments’ water reform policies since the 1990s as a national agenda and have been managing the issues for at least the last 30 years. On November 3 this year, the Queensland State Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Water Glenn Butcher announced the review of the Moreton Water Plan which will encompass all of the Lockyer Valley and Somerset local government areas.

On the same day, the ‘Preliminary Public Consultation Notice’ was issued, meaning the water planning process has commenced. As a result, the Queensland Government is calling for submissions from interested parties and stakeholders. This is exactly the same process the Queensland Government followed when developing the water plan for the Central Lockyer Benefitted Area. State Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald believes both Federal and State Governments have been driven to see Water Resource Plans (WRP) implemented in every irrigation area across the state for a long time.

stood and listened to by both current and future State and Federal Governments.

Submissions close on Friday February 2, 2024. This document will be the key response in getting the best possible outcome for irrigators and the agricultural industry as a whole in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset regions. We have already sourced experts in water planning as well as legal council to ensure the best possible outcome is achievable. While the meeting is targeted at Lockyer Valley and Lower Lockyer Irrigators, other irrigators in the Somerset region are welcome as they are included in the Moreton Government boundary and should also make their own submissions. Lockyer Valley Regional

Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said it was important irrigators attend this meeting ‘in order to understand the significance of what is being proposed, it can impact the future of your businesses’. We will present the facts from meetings to date with the State Government and provide attendees with our honest opinion on the situation at hand from the documentation. The meeting outcome we need from the irrigation community is a clear direction on the path you wish to pursue and policy position to take in the group submission. Tuesday and Wednesday are terrific for being proactive at work. Joint ventures and trust issues are also on the table but don’t spoil a potentially productive week by being rash and reckless. Slow down, think before you speak and consult with loved ones and colleagues before you make any important moves. Two Saturn squares highlight hiccups in your financial management. So strive to be less impulsive and extravagant, and more cautious with cash and credit.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

The Sun, Mars and Pluto activate your relationship and aspirations zones. So it’s a good time to snuggle up close with your sweetheart, throw yourself into a special creative project or dream up some ambitious goals for the future. Passion and purpose will take you far. But Saturn could stir up trust and intimacy issues, and you may feel temporarily stuck in the past. Keep moving forward, Bulls – inch by inch and step by step – towards a brand-new day.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

This week the planetary focus is on your daily routine and work zones but expect some challenging developments and stressful moments. Resist the urge to be argumentative, superficial and self-indulgent. Try to ground your airy energy and calm your restless mind. Your motto for the moment is from actress Goldie Hawn (who turns 78 on Tuesday): “The ability to remain calm and focused in stressful situations is central to making positive decisions.”

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

Have you been wasting time worrying and procrastinating? The Sun and Mars join Mercury in your job zone, so you need to reboot your daily routine and be fast and flexible as you plan your future career path. If you have the confidence to listen to your wise inner voice, then you’ll be one step ahead of the professional pack! Your creativity can also take you places at work. So use positive affirmations and active imagination to transition to the next level.

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

The Sun, Mercury and Mars highlight romance, friendship, socialising, entertaining and networking as you mix and mingle with a wide range of people in a variety of ways. But be careful how you communicate with others on the weekend. Otherwise, your boldness could be misinterpreted as bossiness and your confident approach mistaken for cockiness. Are you looking for love? You could find yourself attracted to an amorous Aquarian or a sexy Sagittarian.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

This week you don’t have the patience to put up with tedious people or long explanations, so strive to extricate yourself from such situations in a tactful way. From Monday until Wednesday, communication and conversation are the buzzwords as you share opinions, learn a new skill, or pass on some exciting information. It’s definitely a good time to give your brain cells a thorough workout! From Thursday onwards, the focus is firmly on home and family.

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22) Stylishly elegant Librans appreciate quality and luxury, but don’t overdo it or you’ll end up being the most beautiful bankrupt on the block! This week the planets stir up your money/self-esteem zones, so it’s time to get your finances in order and be true to the authentic you. Draw inspiration from actress Goldie Hawn (who celebrates her 78th birthday on Tuesday): “I want to dig deep and ask - Who am I? What do I have to offer? What do I have to learn?” SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21)

From Monday until Wednesday, your power planet Pluto makes positive links with the Sun and Mars. Which is fabulous for boosting personal charisma and generating creative ideas. Don’t be stubborn and unimaginative about your current options and choices though. As birthday great, singer-songwriter Bjork observes: “I sometimes fall into the trap of doing what I think I should be doing, rather than what I want to be doing”. Keep your mind flexible.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

You’re full of fantastic ideas this week as the Sun and Mars charge into your sign, and your sparky energy goes into overdrive. But, if you are too gung-ho and disorganised, then taskmaster Saturn will bring you back down to earth with a thud. A domestic project needs to pass the Practicality Test, so try to balance being enthusiastic with being realistic. And don’t make serious commitments unless you are 100% certain you’ll be able to keep them.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) There are two main astro-patterns operating this week. The Sun and Mars make positive aspects to Pluto (in your sign) which is great for determination and persistence. Which you’ll need in spades because Saturn (your patron planet) then squares the Sun and Mars on Thursday and Saturday. So it will be a stop/ start, one step forwards/two steps back kind of week. If you’re a clever Capricorn then you’ll calibrate your plans, expectations, and energy levels accordingly. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)

As the Sun and Mars move into the restless sign of Sagittarius, you’re in the mood for avant-garde adventures and bohemian friendships. But remember there’s a fine line between being spontaneously successful and being hastily foolhardy. Also, a cherished goal or dream may require much more planning than you originally thought. Relax, take your time, and concentrate on enjoying the long and winding journey, rather than just focusing on the destination.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20)

A work issue, volunteer project or education matter is taking up a lot of your time and attention. If you hang in there, it will pay off handsomely in the long run. There are no quick fixes to finding the perfect employment for you. The Sun, Mercury and Mars encourage you to maintain enthusiasm, curiosity and momentum. Motto for the week is from Piscean wildlife warrior Steve Irwin: “Be passionate and enthusiastic in the direction that you choose in life.” COPYRIGHT Joanne Madeline Moore 2023

Does your speedo lag behind reality? HAVE you ever noticed how sometimes the display on your vehicle’s speedometer is different from the speed shown on the navigation app on your phone? A University of New South Wales road safety expert has broken down the truth about why speedo readings can be different from GPS measurements. According to the Australian Design Rules (ADRs), car manufacturers are prohibited from under-reporting a vehicle’s speed. As a result, vehicle manufacturers often calibrate the speedometers at the factory so that it reads above the actual real speed of the car. Road safety expert Emeritus Professor Michael Regan said most manufacturers did this to avoid any chance whatsoever the car might be travelling at a speed higher than the reading on the

Is your vehicle giving you a reliable speedometer reading?

dashboard. “This means the speedo is likely to read 100 kilometres per hour when, in actual fact, your real speed is 95 kilome-

tres per hour,” he said. Professor Regan said the displayed speed you travel on the road is determined by the vehicle’s tyres.

“When the manufacturer carries out speed calibration tests, they’re based on brand new tyres,” he said. “But over time, as the

tyres experience normal wear and tear, they get smaller in circumference. “So as your tyres get older, your speedo actually

overestimates your speed so you might think you’re going faster than you actually are.” Professor Regan said apps which took advantage of GPS technology to calculate speed by determining the time taken to travel a given distance were often hailed as being more accurate than the car’s speedometer. However, regulation does not require vehicle manufacturers to use GPS navigation systems to calibrate speedometers. Professor Regan said just because our speedometers are calibrated to overstate our speed, it does not give the green light for drivers to engage in excessive speeding. “I think most people don’t realise that driving even a couple of kilometres over the speed limit greatly increases the risk of a serious crash, which can have devastating consequences,” he said.

CRICKET LOCKYER A GRADE Early predictions about season supremacy have been put on hold with clear evidence that every team is capable of beating each other. It is great for Lockyer cricket that teams are so evenly matched. Helidon, 5-193 maintained their good form, in holding Ropehill to 131. Matthew McMahon 68n.o and Grant Hogan 48 were best for the Heat, while Reece Teske bagged 3-13. Reece ,24 and Dave Kilah, 27, led the chase, but Ray McBride continued his wicket-taking run with 4-26. The Glenore Grove Roos, 149, gained more momentum, accounting for Mulgowie, 113. Brendan Utz, 32 and Todd Josefski, 29 n.o were Roos top scorers while Alex Emmerson continued his good bowling with 3-19. For the Mulgas, Dean Granzien was dangerous with 31, while Cameron Utz took 2-18. In a match which was never close, Gatton Fordsdale put Forest Hill away for 67. Considering the Goats have consistently scored nearly 200, their score was disappointing. Credit though to the Bulls young gun, Hayden Kleidon who ripped through them with 5-14. Gatton Fordsdale, 3-68, easily knocked off the runs with Steve Kleidon, 27 continuing his dominance. SOUTH QUEENSLAND SELECTION Valley Vikings Captain and QLD Brahmans player, Reggie Hoger, has been selected to represent South Queensland, in the annual upcoming shoot-out with North QLD, from which the State Country side will be selected to contest the national championships in Tasmania. T 20 CENTURY In the hugely popular Friday night T 20 comp at Cahill Park, Ipswich Hornets First Division young gun, Noah Emmerson, playing for Mulgowie, belted a century against Gatton Fordsdale. A T 20 ton is a rare achievement. Mulgowie won the game, despite a serious attempt to catch them. VALLEY VIKINGS The Vikings had a comprehensive win over Brothers, but narrowly missed the chance for outright points. In the first dig, Brothers provided strong resistance, reaching 200. Rogan Utz took 4 wickets. In reply, the Vikings declared at 6-281, with Brock Zischke getting a century. The Vikings had Brothers nine down for 117 in the second innings but were beaten by time. GOLF ESK GOLF CLUB Friday Turkey Run - 10-11-2023 After a washout last week we managed to get the 9 holes in this arvo before the hail came. Gordon Ray winning with Gary Punch taking runnerup after a 4 way countback. Congratulations to Jim Lumsden

by league club enjoyed a golden age, winning nine premierships in 11 seasons from 1952 to 1963. A player from the 63 premier-

ship-winning side said many of the side’s players still reside in the Lockyer Valley, opening the door for a reunion.

FROM PAGE 48 from juniors. “Girls go to about 15, and that’s about the limit until they have nowhere to go because there is no lady’s team to go into at the club,” he said. Jackwitz said the academy was designed to improve sporting confidence in girls from a young age and get them used to playing together. “It’s a great fun sport, especially if they play in an all-girls team, they’re comfortable with their friends and enjoy it a lot more,” he said. Redbacks players Ruby Smith and Samara Derriman played in the clubs last juniors’ team four years ago and said it would be fun to play with all their friends again. “I just like playing, I like stealing the ball off people as a defender,” Smith said. “I look up to Sam Kerr.” There is one more ‘come and try’ session on November 28 before season signups begin in January for girls aged 6-16. Futsal on popular streak FUTSAL has made a successful return to Gatton as the newly-minted club heads toward the end of the year. Now in its third season, the Australian Futsal Association Southwest Futsal Club began in Gatton in 2021. Enrolments reached capacity quickly and 90 kids took part in the sport this year. Southwest Queensland director and coach Chris McLeod said the Lockyer Valley players will begin competing in the interclub league next year.

“From here, next Easter is the state or the regional titles,” he said. “Everyone will go to Toowoomba and we’ll pick teams and go away as Southwest Queensland Highlanders.” Based on the current talent pool, Gatton will be able to field two entire teams, 13 Girls and Under 10 Boys. “Anyone outside those two age groups who are good enough we can bring them into a Toowoomba team so they still get the opportunity,” McLeod said.

This season’s futsal season attracted 90 participants.
