Break-in blitz hits businesses

SMALL businesses in both the Lockyer and Somerset regions fell victim to breakins and robberies over the weekend.

Seven businesses were targeted by thieves in the early hours of Sunday June 19. +HOLGRQ R൶FHU 6HQLRU Constable Sam Ritchie said businesses in Toogoolawah, Esk, Gatton, Grantham, and Helidon were all hit.

“At about 5:26am [Sunday] morning, an unknown person has gained entry to Helidon RSL, via unknown means, UXPPDJHG WKURXJK WKH R൶FH area stealing a laptop and iPhone belonging to the RSL, before making their way to the front bar area of the RSL where a tips jar with $30 cash was stolen,” Snr Const Ritchie said. ³7KH\ WKHQ VHW R൵ WKH VHQsor alarm in doing so.

“It appears that all seven of the breaks have been businesses.”

Esk’s main street was hit hardest, with Mobil, the Stihl Shop, and Esk Thai Restaurant targetted.

One store in Gatton and one in Toogoolawah were also broken into.

Grantham’s Floating Café was entered early Sunday and DOWKRXJK WKH ¿QDQFLDO ORVV was minimal, a sentimental scrapbook was lost during the robbery.

Tabitha Drescher said there was a break in through the front doors in the early hours on Sunday morning.

“They made a bit of a mess, pulled a few things out and about, stole a few drinks and stole our scrapbook,” she said.

The scrapbook was a compilation of the café’s

history, including documents, Grantham history, and reFRUGV RI WKH ÀRRGV “A lot of documents we can’t really get back,” Miss Drescher said.

After speaking to police, Miss Drescher heard of other similar incidents on the same night.

“The same people who broke in here were the same people who broke into three GL൵HUHQW SODFHV WKURXJKRXW the area,” she said.

“Hopefully it’s just random and not targeted.”

Snr Const Ritchie said the thief or thieves were driving a 2003 silver Navara with a canopy on the back.

All stores remain open, anyone with details about the robberies is encouraged to contact police.

Claude ‘The Mowerman’ Harvey has made a name for himself walking down the streets of regional towns to raise money for Bravehearts, a charity which provides child protection training and education programs, and specialist child sexual abuse counsel-

ling and support services.

The 76 year-old began his latest tour of regional towns in southeast Queenlsland on Sunday June 12, visiting Gatton on Friday and Fernvale on Monday.

Today (Wednesday, June 22) he will be touring Esk, so if you are in town keep an eye out.

Mr Harvey said his granddaughters were victims of

child sexual abuse and it made him want to see a change in the world.

“I decided I would turn something negative into something positive and help other kids,” Mr Harvey said.

“This is the best way to help other kids, by pushing a lawnmower around the country.

“The lawnmower is to

get people’s attention… I thought it would be good to push around a lawnmower because the whole world would take notice of me.”

Mr Harvey has so far raised $1.6 million for Bravehearts, and intends to raise $35,000 on this current tour.

Some of the money raised will go towards the Ditto’s Keep Safe Adven-

ture show, a program which teaches children safety skills.

“It teaches them how to be safe and I think that we should all get involved with it.”

In early June this year Mr Harvey was awarded Gold Coast Senior Australian of the Year for his fundraising efforts.

Somerset Sanctuary needs your support

CARING for injured animals takes a whole community, and Somerset Sanctuary will be opening its gates to locals who want to help this Saturday, June 25.

Sanctuary owner Petrina Paidel said she had ‘great plans’ for her wildlife rescue service but recent weather events have made progress GL൶FXOW The February and May ÀRRGV KDYH NHSW KHU EXV\ 2QH RI KHU WDQNV ÀRDWHG away while her driveway ZDVKHG RXW LQ WKH ÀRRGV DQG

a few weeks ago heavy gale force winds snapped a large branch, damaging one of her pen fences.

Thankfully no animals escaped.

“They must have got a fright from the noise,” Ms Paidel said.

The Sanctuary takes in injured and orphaned wildlife and rehabilitates them for release back into the wild.

Ms Paidel deals with possums, gliders, wallabies and of course kangaroos.

She has organised the working bee to restore her damaged pens.

Citizen scientists survey birds and control weeds CALLING all conservationists – exciting new projects are happening in the Somerset region.

Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) hosted a bird survey for Somerset citizen scientists on Saturday and has a weed Survey planned next Saturday, July 2.

WOMEN over 40 are invited to book an appointment with the BreastScreen Queensland mobile van at Plainland.

BreastScreen Queensland Ipswich Service nurse unit manager Amanda Lewis said while anyone over 40 could book a screen, the service was highly recommended for women between 50 and 74.

“About 80% of breast cancers occur in women who are 50 or over,” Mrs Lewis said.

“Research has found that regular breast screening of women in this age group is HIIHFWLYH LQ ÀQGLQJ EUHDVW cancers and reducing deaths from breast cancer.”

The free service only takes about 30 minutes.

Mrs Lewis thanked Schulte’s Meat Tavern for supporting the service.

“Schulte’s connected the power and let us come out here to provide our service to the local community,” Mrs Lewis said.

“They have been wonderful to work with.”

Thousands spring up for garden fair

ESK GARDEN and Lifestyle Fair keeps getting bigger – and this year was no exception.

The sprawling fair in Pipeliner Park attracted thousands on Saturday June 18.

Valley of the Lakes Garden Club president Kerri Melville said the day was ‘brilliant.’

“More people were steadily streaming in the whole time,” she said.

From the novice house plant owner to the most SUR¿FLHQW JUHHQ WKXPE YHQdors, exhibitors and guest speakers provided something for everyone.

Seventeen bus loads from across southeast Queensland came to the iconic event.

Kerrie’s favourite part is seeing ‘happy, smiling faces’ walk through the fair.

There was no shortage of plants to choose from.

Garden club members Lee Deans, Leigh “The Town Croaker” Pearson, and Henny Ralph dressed up in their garden best.

Guest speakers, including Jillian Coomb from Searles Garden Supplies in Kilcoy, gave talks on plant care and gardening.

The event, hosted by Spirit of the Valley Events Inc, will feature the Yugara Dancers, Wisper the Fire Twirler and various artists and vendors.

Event organiser Idell Wadley said all of the region’s

“The most exciting thing for me is Kick’n Chicken Wings will be bringing bush tucker infused chicken wings and that includes a green ant marinade, something very QHZ DQG GL൵HUHQW WR WU\ ´ Laidley District State School will join the festivities again with their dancers.

“They’ve been doing a lot of cultural work so they’re very keen to present what they’ve been working on this year,” Ms Wadley said.

The Deadly Talent Quest will also return with a $200 prize pool for competitors.

“We get a really brilliant cross-section of the community… we get singers, we get dancers, we get comedians, all sorts of wonderful people,” Ms Wadley said.

She said she was proud to host the largest gathering of

“NAIDOC is there for everybody, and that’s what I really want to get across, we are inclusive.”

Lockyer Valley First Nations artist Stephen Hogarth said NAIDOC is a time to gather and experience Aboriginal culture.

“There’s no obligation to come but you should come, because it’s a great day out,” he said.

THE CHILDREN of Walloon State School will showcase their artistry at the 2nd annual art exhibition this Thursday June 23 from 4 to 6pm.

P&C president Ms Jessica Finan said the exhibition would feature an array of arts including sculptures, paintings and performances by the school’s dance troupe and choir.

“This year the theme for the whole event is ‘dreaming with your eyes

open’,” Ms Finan said.

“Each class does a different kind of artwork and they set up the hall like an art exhibition.”

The event will also host three local artists including guest judge Celestine Stokes.

Entry is free and parents and visitors can purchase art for a gold coin donation.

Students’ inside look at local government THE NEXT generation of leaders got an inside look at local politics last week.

Senior students from Peace Lutheran Primary School, Gatton, attended Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s ordinary meeting as part of their civics and citizenship unit.

Year 6 teacher Amy Mynard said students were learning how democracies function, including the roles of decision makers at local, state, and federal levels.

“This excursion was aimed at giving the students an RSSRUWXQLW\ WR VHH ¿UVW KDQG how our local councillors serve their community by discussing and making GHFLVLRQV RQ PDWWHUV D൵HFW ing people who live in the Lockyer Valley,” Ms Mynard said.

THE LINK and Launch career expo attracted hundreds of school students and members of the public to the Gatton Shire Hall on Thursday June 16.

Link and Launch coordinator Erin Boyle said she was pleased with the number of participating local and national employers.

“They were very engaging with the local community and some attendees even left with a job,” she

said.

“We are really grateful for the businesses who took time out of their day.”

Karen Mostyn from the Department of Small Business and Training said the expo could provide value to jobseekers and school leavers of the region.

“The people of the /RFN\HU 9DOOH\ GHÀQLWHO\ need to have some pathway options available to them,” she said.

Marburg under 8s celebrate ‘being a kid’

said it was an important and fun day.

“It’s a celebration of children and being a kid,” she said.

“Playing in a changing

world is the theme for this year.

“Our year 4, 5 and 6 students are running most of our activities so we get them involved as well.”

MARBURG State School covered itself in coloured powder to raise money for its school chaplaincy program last week.

Just after the school’s Under 8s Day, students competed in an obstacle course in bright colours to support the important work of school chaplain of eight and a half years, Krystal Colbran.

“The chaplaincy program is only partially government funded and we have to fundraise the rest, otherwise we lose hours and can’t run all

the programs we do for the kids,” Ms Colbran said.

“We’ve only done minor fundraisers so far and we needed to do something big.

“The kids have been amazing… we’ve raised just under $4,000.”

Ms Coldran organises hampers, phone and fuel vouchers for struggling families, runs a social skills program and she provides her time for chats with kids, staff and parents doing it tough.

Bowling in the sunshine LAIDLEY Bowls Club welcomed players from across southeast Queensland for their two-day ladies carnival on June 14 and 15.

You should go to the Rosewood Show THIS YEAR’S Rosewood Show will have something for everyone with a full schedule booked for the twoday event.

Rosewood Agricultural and Horticultural Society president Craig Christensen said there was plenty for the kids with pig races, a reptile show, animal farm and pony rides.

“Hopefully everyone that comes has a good time,” Mr Christensen said.

“At the moment we’ve got a full schedule for the show, all sections that normally run will be running this year.

“Everything’s back to what it used to be several years ago.”

Mr Christensen is the chief steward of the produce section, and he will be assisted by his niece, Rosewood Showgirl 2022 Chloe Van Den Elsen.

BY JACOB HAYDEN THERE will be a bull for everyone at the 15th annual Lilydale Invitational Bull Sale on Saturday, July 16.

The stud sale will feature 44 Charolais bulls and 20 Charolais females, with lots of polled bulls.

Lilydale Charolais stud principal Ross Sticklen said people would not be disappointed when they see the EXOOV RQ R൵HU “The hybrid vigour of a Charolais bull is basically unparalleled, as soon as you put a Charolais bull over another breed, the hybrid vigour and growth rate is exceptional,” Mr Sticklen said.

“There’s going to be a bull there for any operation.

“There’s a lot of red-factor bulls this year and one of the vendors has recently won the Central Queensland Carcase Classic.”

Kel Kelly said their achievements proved the TXDOLW\ RI WKH EXOOV RQ R൵HU DW the sale.

“We like selling there

because it’s a good area for Charolais with a lot of Charbray and Brahman content cattle in the Toogoolawah-Esk area,” Mrs Kelly

said.

“They’re very growthy cattle that do well in that country.

“We focus mainly on fertility, temperament and carcase quality.”

Mr Sticklen said he was trying to develop the female side of this sale.

“We wanted to… have the option there for people who wanted to breed females,” he said.

“During the droughts a ORW RI IHPDOHV ZHUH VROG R൵ so now people are trying to chase a few females to build their herds up and we thought this would be a good opportunity to allow people to do that.”

He said the sale would be worth the trip to Toogoolawah.

“Potential purchasers wouldn’t be disappointed in the line-up of quality bulls on R൵HU ´

Lockyer 9s girls take on Toowoomba schools

BY JACOB HAYDEN LOCKYER District High School’s girls put their best feet forward last Friday for their rugby league 9s games against Toowoomba’s Harristown State High and St Ursula’s College.

Junior team coach Meghan Clarke said the gala day was a great experience.

“Today’s all about getting the girls some experience and game time, and inviting all the other schools into our school,” Miss Clarke said.

“Most of our girls have never played football before and it’s really good to see such an interest in it.

“They’ve been really keen, we train twice a week, and they’re improving every game they play which is really good to see.
