Leaders object to vax directive

Political leaders in Somerset and Lockyer have expressed concerns over the Queensland Government’s COVID-19 vaccination status direction.

As of last Friday, unvaccinated people are excluded from entering certain venues including hospitality venues, entertainment activities, hospitals, and aged care facilities.

Somerset Regional Council received a petition of 88 signatures and mayor Graeme Lehmann said that council will advocate on behalf of the community and request premier Annastacia Palaszczuk reconsider the approach.

“Council is aware of the concerns of the business sector and our residents in general about the impact on our economy and the social fabric of our community,” Cr Lehmann said.

“Our worry is also that our community will become divided – and we are seeing signs of this already – which leads to

segregation.”

Lockyer Valley Regional Council have urged the public to be considerate to staff operating council facilities included in the directive.

“Council had hoped our art gallery, museums and locations owned by council would not be caught up in the restrictions announced by the State, however under legislation council has no choice in the matter and is obligated to adhere to the direction,” Mayor Tanya Milligan said.

“We appreciate this is both a topical and personal issue and the last thing we need within our community is for division and poor behaviour including aggression towards staff and businesses who are just doing their jobs.”

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said he is concerned about the burden on business and the police to enforce these mandates.

“When both Lockyer and

Somerset Councils made representation to us regarding their opposition to mandates, we wrote to the Premier and expressed our concerns over the management and onus on business and individuals that these mandates would impose,” he said.

Mr McDonald said the Federal Health response required only mandatory vaccination for health care works are vulnerable people, however the state response has gone ‘over and above’ health advice.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington also said she was concerned about the burden placed on businesses, community groups, and police.

“Throughout the past 18 months, it’s been business, their staff, local government and community groups that have had to do the heavy lifting to compensate for the State Government’s failure to boost confidence and access to the vaccine,” she said.

Local politicians object to the health directive, stating it will cause division in the community and is a burden on small businesses.

‘Be kind at check in time’ campaign launched The Palaszczuk Government is urging everyone to show respect for workers when asked for proof of vaccination.

Yvette D’Ath said venues will be required to take all reasonable steps to comply with the Public Health and Social Measures Direction.

“That means hospitality and entertainment venues will be asking customers

for proof of vaccination as they enter the premises or when they order,” Minister D’Ath said.

Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer said the Be Kind at Check In Time campaign

will run over the next four weeks.

“When you are asked to show proof of vaccination, please remember that businesses owners and staff are simply doing their job.”

“If businesses come

across a non-compliant customer who refuses to the leave the premises, they should contact the Queensland Police,” Minister Farmer said.

“If you are anti-vaccination, that is your choice,

but it does not give you the right to abuse those working hard to keep Queenslanders safe.”

Penalties will apply for those people who do not comply, including $1,378 fines.

DISCO Sovereign Award presented to council The Downs Industry Schools Co-Operation Inc (DISCO) presented the Sovereign Award to Lockyer Valley Regional Council last Wednesday.

The DISCO Sovereign is the organisation’s highest award and is given to an individual or entity which has been instrumental in supporting the growth and development of the organisation.

DISCO presented the Sovereign Award to Mayor Tanya Milligan in recognition of Council’s support of the organisation.

DISCO CEO Mike Paton thanked Council for their continued commitment and support of regional youth.

“From providing support to enable the organisation to access cost effective accommodation in Gatton

through to the provision of funding to enable local youth events to take place in the region, this Award is in recognition of Council’s continued assistance throughout the years,” he said.

“It is our way of acknowledging and thanking Council for their support in assisting the organisation to initially commence operations and then provide indirect and direct support to assist the youth of the Lockyer Valley to move forward positively to seek training and employment opportunities.”

Cr Milligan said the Award was a huge honour for the organisation.

“Partnerships are an important part of our organisation and Council is always thrilled to work with

Grant success for Lockyer

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald congratulated the electorate’s latest successful applicants to Round 111 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF).

“In Round 111, clubs and organisations in Lockyer were successful in receiving a combined total of just over $145,000,” said Mr McDonald.

Among the successful applicants were Brisbane Valley Rattlers Australian Football Club Inc who received $35,000 to install goal netting and purchase a scoreboard.

Gatton Glenore Grove Rifle Club Inc also received $35,000 to upgrade their facility.

Mr McDonald said he is always happy to provide support for the community and sporting groups that complete the application process and he encouraged nominees to continue applying if they were unsuccessful in previous rounds.

More than half of the people who do not read local newspapers believe they are essential to their communities, a national survey has found.

Findings from the survey show that 64.5% of respondents consider a printed copy of a local newspaper an essential service to their communities. Further, 48%, or just under half, state that if they ever did read a local newspaper, they prefer to do so in print, compared with online (33%) or via social media (13%).

The survey, conducted in July and August this year, sought the views of 400 Facebook users, who do not read a local newspaper, about the role of local news within their communities.

The research targeted participants in areas that were being served by independent local newspapers within the Country Press Australia (CPA) network.

Deakin University Associate Professor Kristy Hess, who is leading the research, said the Facebook survey supported findings from a previous national study of local newspaper readers, her team conducted last year, highlighting a passion for the printed product.

"The fact that social media users examined here (in the latest survey) also indicate a preference for print is perhaps especially profound," she said.

Cost and accessibility were the key reasons these Facebook users did not engage with a local newspaper in print or digital format, said Dr Hess.

"Many participants highlighted that the absence of a home-delivery service or easy way to access the paper created an impediment to accessing the physical copy. They also indicated that they resisted paying for local news and would engage if it were free.

"This resonates with findings from our first survey of newspaper readers – that is, the existence of a culture of 'free' where people believe local news content should be readily available without cost to audiences."

Bruce Morgan, Executive Director, for CPA, said the survey results were not surprising and reinforced the mood of many regional communities.

"It is not just about the survival of local independent (newspaper) businesses, but that it is fundamental to community well-being, and to basic democratic notions of accountability within those communities," he said.

"Issues around accessibility and cost are also not surprising and reflect swings of community expectation in recent generations. Most independent publishers are adapting to that, having learned from the mistakes of the big corporate players who are now deserting the regions."

Almost 30 per cent of Australia's population, close to 8 million people, live outside major cities in rural and regional areas, and are less-well serviced than their urban counterparts.

High achievers receive Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Toogoolawah State High School students had a successful year in striving toward the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards.

Nineteen students from years nine to twelve worked toward bronze, silver, or gold awards.

To achieve the award, participants are required to commit an hour a week for three to twelve months to skills, physical recreation, and service activities.

As part of their Award, participants are also required to undertake two Adventurous Journeys.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Journeys included Canoeing on Wivenhoe Dam in February and April, Pumicestone Passage in May and Somerset Dam in December; Cycling the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in September and the Kingaroy-Kilkivan Rail Trail in November; and Hiking at Biarra in October.

Olivia Delaforce, Amber Williams, Leah Kakakios, Kade Bulow, 2020 graduates, and Year 12 student Cody O’Keeffe also achieved their Gold Awards but were unable to attend the ceremony.

Mask Mandates Since Saturday, masks requirements have come back into effect.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the mask-wearing requirements would apply to all of Queensland.

Ms D’Ath said the rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases infectious in the community meant it was time for Queenslanders to mask-up again.

At time of writing, masks are required in the following settings: l public transport, including taxis and rideshare l indoor retail, such as shopping centres, supermarkets and retail shops l vulnerable facilities, including hospitals, residential aged care facilities, disability care accommodation and correctional facilities.

Minister D’Ath said it was also strongly recommended that patrons wear masks at indoor hospitality venues, such as cafes, bars and restaurants, cinemas and theatres.

“At this stage, there is no requirement to wear a mask outdoors unless a person chooses to,” she said.

Funding boost to help build Rosewood Library

Communities across Ipswich and Scenic Rim are set to receive almost $86 million to help councils deliver projects in tourism, water and sports and com-

munity infrastructure.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Local Government Steven Miles said the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP)

aims to help hardworking councils build and upgrade infrastructure.

“This early Christmas present will go a long way to continue Queensland’s

economic recovery, creating jobs and building the infrastructure our communities need,” Mr Miles said.

Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden said the

program provided funding for Rosewood Library.

“The Rosewood Library is a great example of the kinds of project that could receive a funding boost,”

Mr Madden said.

“These are the kinds of projects that create construction jobs and improve amenities in our community.”

True crime story in the Lockyer Valley Laidley author Jim Nicholls has rereleased his true crime novel, revealing a scandalous murder in the Lockyer Valley Mr Nicholls said he first wrote ‘Glenore Grove and the Body in the Billabong’ in 2003.

“In conjunction with Idell Wadley from the new bookstore Hypatia’s House in Laidley, I’ve done more research and decided to give it another run,” he said.

Such research includes firsthand accounts from the schoolboys who discovered the murder victim, a woman on the move with two men.

“The murder occurred during the depression era in 1933,” Mr Nicholls said.

Two of Mr Nicholls’

friends were among those who discovered the body.

“They were school children at the time,” Mr Nicholls said.

“Two very good friends of mine led me towards this story many years ago, they have since passed away.

“They were there, they were part of it.”

With additional research from the State Library, Mr Nicholls weaves together the story of Clarice Murphy’s demise at the hands of two men she was travelling with, and how fate intervened to solve the crime.

Mr Nicholls was thanked Chantel Qualischefski, who he said was most helpful with typing and editing.

Lockyer Valley author Edgar Stubbersfield has penned a new book, taking lessons from the Bible’s Book of Ruth and its applications to his farming community.

Mr Stubbersfield said he wrote Ruth: A Somewhat Different Commentary in 2019 during the drought.

“Whenever possible I have tried to tie the lessons of Ruth back to the issues I see in my own community, one which has foreign farm workers, successful landholders, virtuous men and women, older godly women who no longer work but have influence, the issue of who gets the farm, and what constitutes citizenship,” he said.

Mr Stubberfield said he had a strong desire to write a commentary on the Book of Ruth.

“Every time I read it, I saw my own farming community,” he said.

“Tractors may have replaced yokes of oxen but the cycle of planting and harvest and the human struggle with failed crops continues worldwide.”

His hope is that his commentary on the book of Ruth can be read for pleasure as well as spiritual growth.

“Theology without application can be lifeless and boring, and while the comments have been well-researched, contemporary application has been primarily my focus,” he said.

Artist invests to rebuild the Mercury Theatre In May this year, two unfinished paintings by artist Sharon Davson sold for $3 million and last week she announced she will invest the funds to rebuild the Mercury Theatre.

Ms Davson chose to have her $2.3m share of the $3m sale in off-plan residential real estate with the values as negotiated in April 2021.

“This will give the organisation future options,” she said.

Davson Arts Lockyer, formerly known as Gatton Mercury Theatre and Art Gallery Inc. was founded in 1951

by Sharon’s mother, Mrs Win Davson MBE FTCL, to foster the Arts in the region.

Ms Davson has dedicated much of her life to the organisation and desires for it to flourish into the future.

“This includes having a

new building by 2026, and to have positive income streams to assist the development and tourist potential of the Arts in the Lockyer Valley,” Ms Davson said.

for the future in a five year plan for Arts Tourism in the Lockyer Valley.

A major part of the five year plan is Arts Festival in every March, April and May. Ms Davson is very grateful to the Lockyer Valley Re-

gional Council and the Arts and broader communities in the region.

Ipswich Hospital Foundation reach fundraising goal The Ipswich Hospital Foundation have reached their ‘Go Pink’ fundraising goal as part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign after hosting events from September until November.

The funds raised will be used to purchase specialised equipment, including a stereotactic chair which will support communities throughout the West Moreton region.

Ipswich Hospital Foundation CEO James Sturges said he was delighted with the effort and to have teamed up local businesses.

“Support is needed for local breast cancer patients and it’s because the community chose to ‘Go Pink’ that has allowed us to be able to purchase

Breast Screen Ipswich Nurse Unit Manager Amanda Lewis said one in seven women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

Elders Christmas lunch Kambu Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Corporation for Health held an Elder Lunch at the Laidley Bowls Club last Thursday for community members to enjoy company and a Christmas Lunch.

Kambu health program manager Courtney Cardow said they hold Elders events throughout the year in Laidley and Ipswich.

“We do Elders social events every quarter,” she said.

“Today is about Christmas and socialising.”

Ms Cardow said the

event are important to help people connect with each other and the organisation.

“It’s a vulnerable time and they are vulnerable clients so we like to bring them together to try and assist that socialising and discussion,” she said.

“It’s not always a happy season, as people call it.”

The guests enjoyed a Christmas feast and were entertained by live music.

Robbie Stuart remembered

Robbie Stuart is remembered as a larrikin, a larger-thanlife character, and a gentleman.

A Stuart of Royal Blood, as he loved to claim, was born on October 12, 1955 in Toowoomba.

Robbie and Jacque were married in 1981.

They had two children, Ben and Lauren.

When the Forest Hill butcher shop came up for sale in 1988, Jacque’s father and Robbie thought that combining the farm and the shop was the way to go.

They moved to the little house on the farm.

Ben was born in Nambour and Lauren was born during the farm years.

When the children started school, the family moved to Laidley.

His friend Pat Byrnes described Robbie as a character larger than life, but a gentleman soft, happy and caring.

Dan Flanagan spoke about Robbie’s ability on the touch football field.

“Robbie was a deceptive touch player who had many a fine stepping sequence in his repertoire; he could fool most with his moves on the touch field,” he said.

“Even when away with rep teams he would have the audience wondering how such an old looking bloke could be dancing one minute and the next he would be getting applause for completing his one finger push-ups in the middle of the dance floor.

“He would say ‘they were

like putty in my paws.’”

Robbie’s neighbour Chris Wilson wrote a poem to Robbie.

“You were more than a neighbour to my noisy clan.

“An absolute top shelf, fair dinkum type of man.

“Quiet and unassuming, when the time was right.

“But a joker and a larrikin, that was our favourite sight.

“Your work in the community, or cooking the barbie down at touch.

“Nothing was a trouble, or ever became too much.”

Robbie was elected Patron of Laidley Touch in 2008 and three years later was given Life Membership.

He had played touch since he was in the butcher shop at Forest Hill.

After 30 years of butchering, Robbie moved on to be a small job specialist.

He was always heavily involved in community activities, including Little

Athletics, soccer, netball, swimming, musicals, and especially, the Forest Hill Festivities.

He was always helping in any way that he could.

He was also acknowledged for his work during the various floods in this area, in a poem called ‘The Flood Fairy’ written by Pearl Dennien.

Robbie’s daughter- in- law Amy took the opportunity to speak about mental health at Robbie’s funeral.

“Emotional wellbeing affects how we think, feel and act,” she said.

“It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

“Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood through to aging.

“Please remember that it is ok to feel emotion and express it; it is not weaknessit is strength.”

Amy also quoted from a poem.

“No one seemed to notice what you were going through; we all just kept on seeing the man we wanted to.

“If we did not see the pain that you were in, or ask, or offer help, forgive us.”

Dan Flanagan said that Robbie was a friend to every one of all age groups.

Nothing was ever a problem for him.

“We finish with another of Robbie’s favourite quotes: ‘Elvis has left the building.’”

Start 2022 with Lockyer Valley Turf Club’s New Year’s Day races at Gatton Racecourse.

Start the new year trackside Kick off the new year with Lockyer Valley Turf Club as they host the first event for 2022 on January 1.

Lockyer Valley Turf Club president Terry Kirkwood said this is the first time the club has held an event on New Year’s Day. While the club is not sure

what to expect, they are optimistic there will be a good turn out.

“We were supposed to race on the 6th, but Racing Queensland rang and asked me if we could go Saturday the 1st,” he said.

Mr Kirkwood said there will be food and drinks plus

tote and bookies available.

“All the normal stuff will be there, bookies tote bookies, Girl Guides, it’s all there,” he said.

Depending on nominations, Mr Kirkwood is expecting seven to nine races on the day.

“This meeting is actually a

“Their track is not going to be quite ready, that’s why they’ve asked us to take it on.”

Mr Kirkwood said only people who are double vaccinated are permitted to come to the races.

“This is not a club decision, this is a Queensland Health [decision] because we’re a licenced venue,” he said.

“You can’t go to a licenced venue without being double vaxxed, but only on race days or social days when we’re selling alcohol.”

Mr Kirkwood is hoping for clear skies after the club lost their meeting last month due to wet grounds.

“In the month of November we had just a tad under 400ml,” he said.

Lockyer Valley Turf Club will hold their Tradies Day on January 22.

Mango Cheesecake GOOD HOME COOKING WITH BERNARDETTE HALL

Serves 12 people. Can be prepared days ahead of event.

Equipment

Bowls, spring formed tin, spatula, knife, measuring spoon and cup, food processor, (You can use

a mixer if you have one for the cream cheese step) fridge, microwave or stove top.

l 1/4 cup cold water l 3 tbs gelatine powder l 200 gr biscuits (shortbread, Nice, scotch finger, ginger. Your choice) l 80 gr butter, melted l 500 gr cream cheese softened

l 1/2 cup caster sugar l 700 gr Fresh Mango diced cold from fridge (About 4 mangoes depending on size) l 300 ml thickened cream l 1 mango sliced to decorate with shredded coconut on top of cheesecake.

Ingredients

Method

1. Use a 22cm-round (base) spring form cake pan. Line side with baking paper, extending paper 1cm above edge of pan and line bottom of pan.

2. Place water in a small heatproof container and sprinkle over gelatine. Microwave on HIGH (100%) for 20 seconds or until gelatine is dissolved, stirring halfway through cooking.

Set aside to cool.

3. Meanwhile, process biscuits until fine crumbs. Add melted butter. Process until combined. Press biscuit mixture over base of prepared pan. Refrigerate while preparing filling.

4. Wipe processor clean. Process cream cheese, sugar and 500 gr.diced mango until smooth and combined. Add cream.

Process for 30 seconds or until combined.

5. With motor running, gradually add cooled gelatine mixture, processing until combined. Transfer to a bowl. Fold in remaining 200gr. diced mango. Pour over prepared base in pan. Refrigerate overnight or until set.

6. Decoration ideas for chilled cheesecake, top with sliced mango and shredded coconut Or spoon some pureed mango on top and swirl with a knife.

Produce donated for Christmas Local farmers are giving generously this Christmas season and donating produce to BEST Employment’s Harvest Hampers.

BEST’s Liz Ford said the company have partnered with Lockyer Valley producers to provide fresh produce to those in need this holiday season.

“We’ve got all our regular harvest employers, our farmers, contributing to Harvest Hampers which we will give out to our job seekers and the community,” Ms Ford said.

Anyone in the community can collect a selection of fresh produce from their office in Gatton.

“It’s not only for our own job seekers, but it’s for our community,” Ms Ford said.

“It’s open to anyone who’s hard up, they’re up for grabs for anyone in need.”

Hampers are available from today until Friday.

Ms Ford said farmers have donated a range of vegetables, including herbs, salads, lettuce, pumpkin, onions, and beetroot.

Trade with UK for red meat The red meat industry welcomed the virtual signing of the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (A-UK FTA) on Friday.

The terms of the A-UK FTA, which were agreed in principle by Prime Ministers Morrison and Johnson in June 2021, will see Australian beef and sheepmeat/goatmeat access to the UK liberalised over a transition period.

For Australian red meat producers and exporters, this will mean that Australia will be better placed to help supply some of the UK’s import requirement for high-quality beef, sheepmeat and goatmeat.

Chair of the Australia-UK Red Meat Market Access Taskforce Andrew McDonald said the inking of the FTA

solidified an already close partnership.

“Australia and the UK have a long history of trade, with the UK being a loyal purchaser of Australian beef and sheepmeat, albeit in small volumes,” he said.

“The deal, once ratified, will result in Australian beef and sheepmeat exports entering the UK under a tariff rate quota (TRQ) regime – with initial TRQ tonnages gradually increasing over a 10 year transition period.

“Product within the TRQ amounts will enter tariff free.

“Whilst there will be no TRQ regime post year 10, a volume safeguard provision will apply until the end of year 15, beyond which no safeguards will apply.

Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke said not all fox sightings are reported to council but are instead discussed on social media.

“Facebook is good, but it’s not council, so please don’t write on Facebook and social media to get those issues across to council,” Cr Gaedtke said.

Cage traps and trail cameras have been deployed as part of a strategy to control the pest animal.

Pest Management Working Group representative councillor Sean Choat said staff are monitoring den sites as they are found.

“These are fumigated to deter continued use by the animals,” he said.

“Cage traps are used in areas where sightings have been reported however we rely on landowners sharing information with us to allow a more targeted approach to controlling fox populations in the region.”

Cr Choat encouraged residents to report all fox sightings.

“The more detailed information we can obtain through working with landholders about locations of foxes and where attacks are occurring, the more information we can provide about protecting their flocks and control options, especially if we can target them at multiple sites they visit.”

Check before you travel this Xmas Summer 2021 has the potential to see multiple hazards converge to create risk on Australian roads.

A do-it-yourself pre-departure checklist has been issued by automotive industry initiative Genuine is Best, as Australia prepares for holidays this summer.

Laidley Bowls breaks for Christmas Lady Bowlers had their breakup on December 15.

After a fun game of scroungers, light lunch and a game of Trivia, everyone said their goodbyes until February 2, 2022.

On Saturday December 18 everyone had a great time at the

Christmas and Trophy lunch.

A wonderful afternoon was enjoyed by all members and their partners.

After a great lunch, we were entertained with some great country music by Dennis Russell.

All the winners for the year were

presented with their prizes.

President Dorothea presented her committee with a gift as a thank you for their support during the year.

She wished everyone a Merry Christmas and will welcome them back in 2022.

Gatton touch finished the year last week with the grand final games held at Cahill Park.
