Enough is Enough

SINCE the Initial Stage 1 development of a rocket engine testing facility at Helidon was slipped by the local community, under the watchful eyes of the LVRC, persistent efforts by community members and groups have sort to bring both the developer and the Council to account for their actions and/or inactions regarding this development.

Just in the last couple of weeks, we have become aware that, yet another extension has been agreed to by the Council, allowing the developer until 20 October to provide the material Council requires to properly assess the merits and problems of the development, much of which has already been built and operated without approval.

By my count this is at agreement, going back to September last year since Council’s request for ‘Further Advice’ to the

selection of formal photographs, alongside our other local high schools, in late November.

Until then, rest up over the holidays and all the best for your

The reality is that many of the obvious issues with this development simply cannot be adequately water management, noise mitigation and the one that both Council and the developer are not mentioning, pollution, in its various guises.

These issues can be sprayed with all the glitter that money can buy but

The developer cannot provide the assessment team with the information needed to approve the application because they can’t.

And so, extension after extension is agreed to, allowing the developer a free ride that that few have the luxury of.

Enough is enough, I believe it is time for the council to stop the merrygo-round and call a halt to the application as it should have done months ago.

The rules allow for some 130 working days per phase for an application

agreement with Council.

The latest extension will grant the applicant over 220 days, and there is little guarantee that this to be granted.

Furthermore, the site should be inspected, and a demolition and removal

order be slapped on any illegal structures and full rehabilitation of the site be carried out, including replanting of any trees removed to enable construction of the unapproved structures.

Ratepayers and community members simply want this dark cloud to pass so we can get on with our lives.

Laidley Spring Festival

I WISH to apologise to our patrons and orchid lovers for the treatment received from the festival committee and Lockyer Valley Regional Council during the recent Spring Festival.

I was assured the shuttle bus would be available for transport of patrons to and from the Orchid Show.

This did not happen and the only bus stop for the show was on the corner of Patrick St and Whites Rd, a distance of at least 500 metres from the sports centre.

Buses were not signed and people did not know what the vehicles were as they were just council vehicles and no bus stops were signed so it was just confusion.

On Friday there was no need to close Whites Rd shotgun down that road at 9am, 10am, and 11am

and the only persons likely control people.

After complaints to the Deputy Mayor the road was opened at 2:30pm but this was too late for a lot of our patrons.

I am extremely disappointed with the lack of representation from the festival committee and councillors to even visit the venue and see the effort put in by club members to hold this show.

The Mayor was on the radio Friday saying she has spent the whole day at Cultural Centre and would be visiting all the other venues on Saturday (this did not happen).

For an organisation that has supported the Spring Show and previously the Chelsea Flower Show for more than 30 years I

Orchid Society and feel like we are not wanted as part of the Spring Festival.

The number of people we encouraged to attend through organised bus trips was the only high point of the weekend.

Again I sincerely apologise to our patrons and orchid lovers who missed seeing the show due to the lack of planning by the Spring Festival committee.

Drivers must share the road

ROAD users are reminded to treat each other with patience and respect after a spate of complaints from cyclists.

Laidley Station Acting

Sergeant Shelly Easton said members of the public contacted the station directly to report inappropriate and illegal behaviour.

“It’s crucial for us to promote safe practices for cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers, to reduce the risk associated and protect everyone on the road,” she said.

S/Sgt Easton said complaints included motorists honking or yelling at cyclists as they passed.

“That leads to feeling intimidated and not very safe on that road network, so we ask that drivers be patient and courteous to our bicycle riders using the road network,” she said.

“They have a right to be there, and they also have a

right to feel safe.”

Narrow country roads like Laidley Plainland Rd are of particular concern.

“It’s such a dangerous road for cyclists because there is no corridor of safety,” S/Sgt Easton said.

“Bicycle riders do have a lawful authority to ride on a roadway and that includes them riding two abreast.”

Motorists must stay 1m wide when passing cyclists, or 1.5m where the speed limit is over 60km/h.

Motorists can cross the centre line, including double lines and painted islands, to pass cyclists safely. If it is not safe to pass, motorists must wait.

“One area of concern is that drivers are failing to

UQ proposal to outsource cleaners shocks staff

THE UNIVERSITY of Queensland’s proposal to outsource cleaners’ jobs shocked students and staff of the Gatton campus.

National Tertiary Education Union Gatton sub-branch president Dr Anthony Young said cleaning staff were called to a meeting earlier this month where they were presented with the proposal.

“There’s ten permanent cleaners, they’re the lowest paid at the university and they all live locally in the Lockyer Valley and around Gatton,” Dr Young said.

“A lot of them have been here for a lot longer than the academic staff have been here and you can imagine they were very upset.

accordingly as a tribute.

“The community have been unbelievable,” he said.

“It just goes to show at a time like this how a community can pull together to support the less fortunate.”

“A lot of the academic and professional staff were also upset, because

we know these cleaners... and we talk with them every day.”

Dr Young compared the proposal to Qantas’ outsourcing of baggage handlers.

“The concept of a big company with a $2 billion turnover each year sacking a wholly female workforce is just a bad look, it’s something Alan Joyce would do,” he said.

“We love UQ, and we want to see UQ do well, but UQ’s not going to do well if it makes the wrong decisions.”

Dr Young said his fellow academic and professional staff had made submissions to UQ management.

“In addition to that, we set up a petition [two weeks ago], and so far we have 644 signatures on that petition, and that’s only in a very short time,” he said.

Do you know about this sports medal?

A CALL for information has been made for anyone who has any knowledge of a sports gold medal won in Laidley dating from 1909.

Toowoomba resident Imelda O’Loughlin said the gold medal was in her mother’s possession but no one in her family has any knowledge of its story.

“I’ve used Trove and found a certain amount of information like the date that it was won on was Empire Day [24.05.1909],” she said.

“The sport’s day was for students of public schools and was sponsored by the Hibernian society.”

Ms O’Loughlin said the initials engraved on the medal appeared to have the letters F.H.

Sheena will give a presentation on Birds of southeast Queensland and

the Somerset region. An honorary Life Member of BirdLife Australia and founding member of Protect the Bush Alliance, Sheena has a keen interest in wildlife and conservation.

She has been involved in

many notable conservation projects including the Eastern Bristlebird Recovery Project, the Painted Honeyeater Project, and the Bimblebox Alliance, a virtually uncleared nature reserve in central west Queensland under imminent threat

from coal mining.

As well as sharing her knowledge and experience of southeast Queensland bird life, Sheena will highlight the importance of recording data on bird sightings and bird calls in order to better understand

and protect Australia’s birds and conserve their habitats.

With BirdLife Australia’s annual Aussie Bird Count being held around Australia in October, here is your

you can contribute to this

important event.

The meeting starts at 6:30pm followed by a light supper at 7:00 pm. Sheena’s presentation, including questions, will begin at 7:15pm.

Coming together for R U OK? Day

ROSEWOOD State High School students came together over snow cones, sausage sizzles, and cake for R U OK? Day on September 13.

The students enjoyed music, games, and lunch alongside community members and Headspace.

School chaplain Tracey Ballard said the fun atmosphere fostered relationship building both within and outside the school community.

“These events bring such a lovely atmosphere,” she said.

“They build relationships

and it provides that fun as well.”

Ms Ballard said celebrating R U OK? Day was important to let students know they are not alone.

“It’s so important that they realise that they’re not alone, that they can reach out, and we build relationships in the sense that they can reach out and help each other,” she said.

“[And it’s] educating people to do that, to look out for each other and be concerned about each other.”

Live your best life with new pharmacy

LIVELIFE Pharmacy opened its new Plainland store on Lockyer Valley customers.

The new store, located at Plainland Plaza, boasts two new consult rooms and additional space over the former location at Schulte’s Central.

Pharmacy owner and manager Tessa Drew opened the store last Monday with fellow pharmacist and partner Matthew McLean and her Plainland team.

The pair took ownership of the pharmacy in August 2022 and also run the LiveLife on Patrick Street, Laidley.

“We jumped onboard quite quickly because we could see the potential in the area and the need, especially for the seven-day trade as well,” Mrs Drew said.

“We wanted to make sure when we opened a brand new store, we were doing it at 110%.

to give back to the community and make sure we were able to provide those services.”

Mrs Drew said the store’s location was convenient for customers within the shopping complex.

“We have loved the space to work with as well, we’ve

got a bit of a larger layout and brought in some new ranges,” she said.

LiveLife has 39 stores spread across Queensland, and Mrs Drew said they chose Plainland for a good reason.

“When we visited for the

community it was and we fell in love with it when we moved here,” she said.

“It’s a rapidly growing area and we could see the potential in both Laidley and Plainland.”

Mrs Drew said LiveLife pharmacists come out from behind the counter.

“Our aim in a LiveLife Pharmacy is that when you enter a store, you are always going to have an interaction with a pharmacist,” she said.

“Our aim is to be providing the full scope of skills pharmacists have to our customers here, because we have so much potential and so much

knowledge to give.

“We make sure to design the pharmacy so we can have those one-one-one interactions and ensure we’re caring for the health of our customers.”

The store is open 8:30am5pm Monday to Saturday and 9am-2pm on Sundays.

Marburg to celebrate its heritage

THE SMALL town of Marburg will celebrate its German heritage this week at the 17th annual Black Snake Creek Festival.

The event begins today, September 20 with the opening of the Art Competition and Exhibition at the Green Shed, from 10am-2pm until Friday, followed by the main festival on Saturday September 23, 8am-3pm at the Marburg Community Centre.

Marburg District Residents secretary Wendye Gratton said this year’s theme is celebrating German heritage.

“Marburg’s early settlers were German people and there’s still quite a few streets around the place that have got German names,” Mrs Gratton said.

The fan-favourite emergency services challenge will return on Saturday, involving go-karts and the consumption of German foods.

“We’ll also have lots and

lots of market stalls, a huge variety of knick-knacks and food stalls,” Mrs Gratton said.

“The local school will be there again with their Marburgers.

“You’ll meet people you don’t see all the time, you’ll

catch up with friends, and it’s really great to see people having a good time wandering around with smiles on their faces.”

Art curator Linda Maine said she was excited to introduce some new categories to the exhibition this

year, alongside classics like human form, environment and wildlife.

“We have abstract and miscellaneous, so 3-dimensional items can be brought in for that,” Ms Maine said.

“Monochrome was some-

this time, to cater to people who do monochrome work like pencil, graphite, charcoal and ink.

“We’ve also brought in a primary and high school entries… we thought it might be interesting to see how many school-aged children

enter for a change.

“We also have the mail boxes, which I’m madly trying to paint… I’m doing a Highland cow one myself.”

Visitors will be able to bid on and vote for their favourite mailbox, as well as the People’s Choice category.

Veg farm undergoing Clifton expansion

LOCKYER Valley vegetable operation Jackwitz Farms is expanding into the Darling Downs and creating up to 20 jobs.

The fourth-generation family enterprise is building a temperature-controlled packing facility at its new Clifton site to help expand the output lettuce, and wombok to both domestic and export markets.

Jackwitz Farms director Andrew Jackwitz said the Clifton facility would mean year-round vegetable supply and full-time employment.

“The new Clifton facility will mean we can maintain a yearly supply of vegetables and our employees will also have full-time work all year round,” he said.

“The expansion will create up to 20 jobs with majority of those in the packing shed and some farm hands too.”

Jackwitz Farms was successful in securing a Rural Economic Development

(RED) Grant under Round

Five of the Queensland Government program to complete the project.

“We appreciate what the Queensland Government has done for us,” Mr Jackwitz

Biosecurity Protection Levy open for consultation

THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has opened consultation to help shape the way the new Biosecurity Protection Levy will be applied.

The 2023-24 Federal Budget included $1.03 billion over the next four years to Australia’s biosecurity system.

From July 1, 2024, primary producers will contribute to the cost of Australian Government biosecurity activities with a new levy called the Biosecurity Protection Levy.

said.

“The Rural Economic Development Grant will help us enormously.”

It is expected to be completed by mid-next year.

Deputy Secretary of Biosecurity and Compliance Dr Chris Locke said the funding mechanism was to be designed in keeping with the shared responsibility approach of this year’s Budget –

ensuring both those who create risk and those

contributions.

“The amount producers are being asked to contribute is equivalent to 6% of Commonwealth biosecurity funding in 2024-25,” Dr Locke said.

“By comparison, importers will contribute around 48% and the taxpayer will contribute around 44%.”

From July 1 this year, the government increased cost recovery for importers and a new cost recovery arrangement will be applied to low-value imported goods.

Visit haveyoursay.agri culture.gov.au/biosecuri ty-protection-levy to read the consultation paper and take the survey.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

September 18-24, 2023 ARIES

When it comes to professional or volunteer work, do you feel as if you’ve been going backwards? Prepare to take a welcome leap forward as the Sun, Pluto and Mercury move things in a positive direction. So don’t waste precious time procrastinating! Be upfront with work colleagues, clients or customers, and keep them up to date with current plans and changes. The more creative and proactive your approach with family and friends, the better the week will be.

TAURUS

Hey Bulls – are you making the most of Jupiter moving through your sign? The planet of good fortune is transiting through Taurus for another eight months, and then it won’t be back again for eleven years. So don’t rest on your lovely laurels! It’s time to turn dynamic opportunities into productive, prosperous projects. Ultimately, it’s up to you. Birthday great Bruce Springsteen (who turns 74 on Saturday) reminds us: “When it comes to luck, you make your own.”

GEMINI

On Tuesday, nebulous Neptune sucks the wind out of your sails (especially at home or work) and you may feel disappointed or confused. Don’t despair and give up, Gemini!

imaginative new directions. Thursday’s Sun/ Pluto trine focuses your busy mind and sharpens your cerebral talents. So it’s the perfect time to analyse, study, research and dig deep as you uncover a mystery or solve a perplexing problem.

CANCER

On Monday and Tuesday, resist the temptation to retreat inwards (and be moody and mysterious) to cover up your emotional insecurities. Clear and honest communication (with yourself and loved ones) will get you a lot further than sulky Crab behaviour! And are you overdue for some creature comforts and a touch of luxe? With Venus visiting your money zone, raid your piggy bank and treat yourself to a restaurant meal or some indulgent body pampering.

LEO

There’s the tendency to become obsessed about an idea (or person) as you focus with Leo tunnel-vision. You’re putting in 100% effort but don’t be disappointed if the results aren’t perfect. You’ll learn more from perceived ‘failures’ than you will from successes.

(who was born on September 20, 1934): “It’s better to explore and make mistakes than to play it safe. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life.”

VIRGO

With Mercury and the Sun visiting your sign this winning combination. It’s also a wonderful time to boost your self-esteem with a physical makeover, tap into your latent talents, and believe in yourself – even when other people disagree with you and the going gets tough! So your motto for the moment is from Virgo actress Jada Pinkett Smith (born on September 18, 1971): “Don’t allow anyone to dictate who you are.”

LIBRA

This week is all about bringing more balance and harmony into your busy world. We celebrate the Equinox on Saturday – when the Sun transits into Libra, and day and night are of equal length. With Mars also moving through your sign, it’s time to tap into your passion and creativity. So your motto is from fellow Libran, legendary stage actress Sarah Bernhardt: “Life begets life. Energy creates energy. It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich.”

SCORPIO

The magnetic Sun/Pluto trine boosts personal power and encourages passionate communication and purposeful transformation. But the overall message this week is patience, as Mars (and then the Sun) transit through and rejuvenation are just what the doctor ordered. If you look to the future with a positive attitude, then fabulous opportunities will manifest – eventually. But you must be extra patient.

SAGITTARIUS

You love to hear the sound of your own voice as you chat, converse and communicate. However, sometimes you can confuse talking about something with actually doing it! If you think things through and then act with passion and purpose, the week will go well. But if you don’t walk your talk, expect delays and disappointments at every turn. Be inspired by music legend (and birthday great) Bruce Springsteen: “Talk about a dream and then make it real.”

CAPRICORN

Early in the week you could feel doubtful or disappointed, as the Sun/Neptune opposition dulls motivation and confuses communicato return, as the Sun/Pluto trine boosts your earthy energy and natural enthusiasm. Personal projects, holidays, travel and education are highlighted. Remember it’s Equinox week so the more you relax and tune into your inner equilibrium, the more productive (and attractive) you’ll be!

AQUARIUS

An unreliable relative or a questionable acquaintance could lead you astray. So keep your realism radar set on high and avoid getting caught up in dubious schemes. You’re penny-pinching Saturn stirs up your money zone. Astute Aquarians will budget wisely and prioritise saving over spending. Strive to build your outer material security – as well as your inner emotional security. Both are equally important to future success.

PISCES

If you daydream the week away, you’ll just end up feeling dazed and confused. Try channelling your creative energy into relationships, joint ventures, group projects or helping others. When it comes to a partnership, you’re keen to pursue a particular course of action but is a loved one on the same page? Take the time to double-check, otherwise you could directions. Communicating clearly is the key.

CRICKET

VALLEY VIKINGS

rounds of the T 20 Lenny Martin Cup, the Valley Vikings turned in two emphatic victories at Ivor Marsden to coming Saturday.

The victories were highlighted by a blazing 127 by Brock Zischke in the 4 -233 demolition of Northsiders, 8-196, in an innings which surely caught the eye of South East QLD selectors.

Joe Wallace was back in the runs with 27, while Josh Reisenlieter franked his all-rounder ability with 3 wickets.

In the morning game, Brock was again in form leading the scoring with a brisk 45 as the Vikings reached 6-152 in accounting for Brothers, who threatened at times in their 6-131 chase.

Hayden Sippel bowled very economically, conceding only eight runs in his three overs. This competition is providing valuable centre wicket time in the main season build up.
