Kilcoy NDIS clients left in lurch

Somerset Regional Council will be left to help fill the gap in disability support services when Anglicare ceased its NDIS services in Kilcoy.

Several Kilcoy families were left ‘confused, distressed and angry’ after a September 7 meeting with councillors and new potential service providers, according to the community development officer’s report presented at last week’s ordinary meeting.

“There were many confused, distressed and angry families in the room and the meeting seemed to end without any clear vision, as to what would happen next,” the report read.

An Anglicare Southern Queensland spokesperson said the company is transitioning away from providing NDIS services as the growth in services providers has offered more choices for clients.

ALARA Queensland Ltd was one of the Somerset services who attended the meeting to help transition

clients from Anglicare and wrote to council to express an interest in providing services for Kilcoy’s NDIS clients.

With the Anglicare premises unavailable for a new service to run a day centre, it fell on council to help find a suitable location.

At Wednesday’s ordinary

meeting, councillors unanimously voted to consider entering an agreement with ALARA Queensland Ltd to facilitate the provision of a day centre for use by both disability and aged clients three days per week at the Kilcoy Memorial Hall.

During discussions, Cr Robert Whalley raised the matter was the state government’s responsibilities and local council was left to pick up the slack.

However, he said as a heartfelt council, they were going out of their way to help.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann agreed and said the state government needs to ‘step up to the plate.’

All councillors agreed to help and resolved to write to federal and state governments regarding the issue.

As Cr Cheryl Gaedtke put it, ‘they’re still our people.’

Less than half Lockyer Valley, Somerset fully vaxxed

Less than than half of Lockyer Valley and Somerset resident have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccination, according to Queensland Health data.

As of October 10, 62.4% of Lockyer Valley residents had received their first

dose while 43.7% had received two doses.

In Somerset, 65.9% had received dose one and 48.3% had both jabs.

Ipswich was sitting at 66.8% and 48% respectively.

Seniors Expo Event Somerset Seniors are invited to a free regional event at the Somerset Civic Centre on Friday October 29 to celebrate Seniors Month.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the event was a great opportunity for residents to find information about locally available services.

“Seniors and their carers along with members of the public will be able to speak directly with service providers and learn more about what is available and how to access the services that are relevant to them,” he said.

The event commences with a services expo from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The expo showcases some of the great services available in the region.

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox (varicella-zoster virus).

Shingles can only develop in a person who has already had chickenpox (varicella). After an episode of chickenpox, the virus does not completely clear, and some particles lie dormant in nerve roots near the spinal cord. They cause no harm, or signs and symptoms, but can re-activate later to cause shingles (herpes zoster).

If the varicella-zoster virus reactivates, it travels along the nerve to the skin to cause shingles. Symptoms are commonly pain and a rash. The pain is localised, and can range from mild to severe. The pain may be a constant dull, burning or gnawing pain, or sharp and stabbing pain that comes and goes. The rash typically appears two to three days after the pain begins.

Shingles generally affects only one nerve, on one side of the body.

Shingles can also cause a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia, in which the affected area of skin stays painful after the shingles rash has cleared.

Treatments for shingles include anti-viral medicines, pain-relieving medicines (analgesics) and soothing creams, gels and dressings. Antiviral medicines (e.g. famciclovir, valaciclovir, aciclovir) stop the virus from replicating. Early treatment with antiviral medicines

can speed healing, as well as reduce pain and other complications. Antiviral medicines must be prescribed by a doctor, and can only be subsidised on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for treatment of patients with herpes zoster within 72 hours of the onset of the rash.

Pain-relieving medicines such as non-prescription simple analgesics (e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen) may help to relieve the pain, and you can buy them from a pharmacy. Stronger analgesics (e.g. opioids and medicines for nerve pain) must be prescribed by a doctor.

Creams, lotions, gels and wound dressings can help to relieve the pain and protect the affected area. Once the rash has healed, capsaicin cream or lignocaine gel may also help to relieve postherpetic neuralgia.

All people aged 70 years old can receive the shingles vaccine, Zostavax®, on the National Immunisation Program (NIP). There is a five year catch-up program for people aged 71–79 years old until 31 October 2021.

If you think you may be developing signs and symptoms of shingles, visit your doctor as soon as possible (within 72 hours of the onset of the rash), and pharmacist to discuss treatment options.

Toogoolawah SES member recognised for excellence

Toogoolawah SES member Danni Cawte took out a Regional SES Week award last week, underlining the important role that the SES plays in regional areas.

The presentation took place during the annual QFES/SES

South-Eastern Region SES Week Award ceremony at the Fernvale Community Hall on Sunday 10 October 2021.

Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the contribution that SES members make to

regional areas cannot be understated.

“Here in Somerset we have very committed and hard-working SES crews,” he said.

“The fact that we have an award-winning team member based at our Toogoolawah SES

base doesn’t surprise me at all.

Danni’s dedication to her role is one we can all be grateful for.”

Regional SES Week Awards are based on the eligibility criteria of ‘special contribution by an individual to the SES, through compassion, support,

commitment, diligence or skill.’

The citation on Danni’s award reads “For special contribution to the SES through diligent application to training and operational tasks and role modelling peer support to fellow members.”

Free tree day returns to Esk, Kilcoy, Fernvale Somerset Regional Council’s popular free tree day events for residents returns this year after a brief hiatus in 2020.

West Moreton Landcare Group representative Cr Sean Choat said he was

happy to see the return of the free tree events.

“This is a very simple way of supporting the planting of native plants and trees, not only to beautify resident homes, but to support native birds and animals

while doing so,” he said.

“Council has looked at specific wildlife habitat trees for fauna in our region and for those on blocks larger than 8 hectares, the provision of these trees will have an impact in

the longer term.”

There will be a free sausage sizzle, wildlife shows and environmental community stalls at each event.

Free tree day events will be between 8am and 11am at Pipliner Park Esk

on October 23, Aston Park Kilcoy on October 30, and Memorial Park Fernvale on November 6.

Free tree vouchers were attached to rates notices posted to residents in August.

Two male offenders from Summerholm and Gatton have been charged with stealing and break and enter offences as well as drug related charges after police raided a Summerholm property in relation to property which was stolen from several locations in the last two weeks.

Property included motor vehicles, machinery, household items and tools. The offenders will appear in Gatton Magistrates Court later this month.

A 58-year-old male from Laidley was charged with Unlawful use of a Motor Vehicle, Trespass and Wilful Damage after a motor vehicle was stolen from Laidley.

The offender will appear in Gatton Magistrates Court on November 8.

A 42 year old male from Dinmore was charged with possession of a utensil after police attended a Lockrose property and located the items.

He will appear in Gatton MC on the November 8.

A 20 year old male from Gatton was charged with possession of a utensil after police attended an address at Summerholm and located the items.

He will appear in Gatton Magistrates Court on November 8.

A 22 year old female from Summerholm was charged with possession of a utensil after police attended an address at Summerholm and located the items. She will appear in Gatton Magistrates Court on Nov 8.

Baldwin remains as President. Carrie Hamilton has retired as Vice President and will be sorely missed. The Vice President and Strategic Development Officer will now be Carolyn Barker. A new member, Thereza Vermaak, was elected as our Market Coordinator and we intend to resume operating the Toogoolawah Railway Markets from Saturday 13th November.

Guest Speaker at the 2021 AGM was Dr Denver Beanland, President of the Royal Queensland Historical Society. He had some tantalising tales about the founding of Queensland as a colony and then as a State as part of the Commonwealth and has promised to return for another presentation in 2022. Hon Shayne Neumann Federal Member for Blair and Mayor Cr Graeme Lehmann also addressed the meeting and added their dedicated support to our work. Shayne has helped with a grant for the insulation of our Storage shed and we are in

discussions with Council about another project for 2022.

Beryce Nelson, Toogoolawah & District History Group Inc Lockyer Performing Arts have again presented a very entertaining and professional performance of ‘The White Sheep Of The Family’ at the Laidley Cultural Centre last week. We have not missed a performance in all the years they have presented for our valley but this show and ‘Anne of Green Gables’ have been literally two of the best ever. The cast of both shows were very talented and dedicated people. I hope some of our keen drama students were able to attend and have decided to audition for future shows. Please make sure we have another show early next year for all we Lockyer residents.

Esk op-shop relocates

The Esk Community OpShop has to vacate its Ipswich St premises, but the team of volunteers want to assure the public they are not gone, just moved.

Since opening its doors on October 16 2020, the not-forprofit business has given tens of thousands of dollars back to the community.

Esk Community Op-Shop president Jon Cunningham said the store was flooded with donations from the start.

“We believed it was going to take us at least six months before we could start giving back,” he said.

“When we had a look at this shop, we couldn’t believe we could possibly fill it, and it took a week.

“The people here supported us right from the word go.”

The shop made its first monetary donation to the community after only six weeks of trade instead of the projected six months.

In total, $72,361.15 has been donated to 34 groups, schools, clubs, charities, and individuals.

Three weeks after putting the finishing touches on the shelving, they were told by their landlord they would have to vacate.

“We were told that we were here for as long as we wanted it and then a couple of weeks later, we were told they’ve rented it out to somebody else,” Mr Cunningham said.

have been searching for a new premises since issued the notice.

They have found a new location in a shed complex on Peter St but there are a few logistics to work through first.

“At the moment it’s industrial and we’ve got to get it transferred to retail,” Mr Cunningham said.

The complex was sold a little over a month ago and the new owner welcomes the op-shop as tenants, but there is some work to be done on

this site before they can move it.

“He’s very happy for us to go in there, but he’s waiting for the sheds to be cleaned out,” Mr Cunningham said.

Since they will no longer be on the main street, Mr Cunningham said they might miss out on the foot traffic their current location provides.

“It will affect us as far as walk-ins go,” he said.

“There was so much foot traffic between Nash’s, the

shops over the road, and Red Deer [before it burned down] and the bakery.

“It’s going to affect us there.”

However, he is not concerned about losing business or donations from the local Esk community.

“Just about every local has stated that no matter where we go, they’ll follow us,” he said.

“We would like to thank everybody for their fantastic support.”

Police officer injured

A Laidley police officer was injured while effecting an arrest on a 41 year old male at 7pm on October 9.

Police were responding to a domestic violence related incident at a Glenore Grove address.

The man was eventually restrained by police who were forced to deploy a taser.

The officer suffered bruising to his shoulder and knee as a result of the arrest and the offender was charged with several offences.

Charges included 3 x assault occasioning bodily harm, 1 x wilful damage, 1 x choking offences and 1 x assault occasioning bodily harm under domestic violence legislation, 2 x serious assault of a police officer, 3 x serious assault of a police officer by biting, spitting etc., 1 x wilful damage of police property and 1 x contravention of a domestic violence order.

4198 rural, regional and suburban press readers were surveyed - this was considered a demographic portrait of just who makes up country press readership, 61% were female and 38% were male.

The survey figures were overwhelmingly in favour of print ….…..

-86% think a printed newspaper is an essential service for their community -83% of people would prefer to access their local news in printed format -While 59% said they only read one local newspaper, 41% said they read two or more local newspapers.

Lowood opens its doors to local artists The Open Door Gallery in Lowood welcomed its first visitors when it opened to the public last weekend.

The gallery held a successful opening night event on Saturday October 9.

Queenslanders are being urged to start preparing for extreme weather events, with Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan launching ‘Get Ready Queensland Week’ to raise awareness on how to protect your families this summer.

“The Get Ready Queensland website has all the information to guide you,” Mr Ryan said.

“Just last season alone, Queensland was hit by 11 natural disaster events across 50 local government areas including a hailstorm, bushfires, floods and cyclones.

“We also know a lot of people have moved to Queensland from interstate this year and we want them to be aware that in Queensland, disaster can strike anywhere and at any time.”

Thurston said Queenslanders can get ready in three simple steps.

“All we need to do is prepare an emergency plan, pack an emergency kit and make sure our insurance is up to date,” Mr Thurston said.

The advice comes as CSIRO launched a new bushfire resilience guide, with Leader of CSIRO’s Bushfire Adaptation team Justin Leonard saying the guide offers bushfire risk management advice for home owners and can be found on their website.

Senior Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, Laura Boekel, said Queenslanders can keep up to date with the latest warnings and forecasts via the BOM Weather smartphone app.

“Our animals are important, and our pets are loved members of our family so when emergencies like disasters occur, you want to keep them safe,” Mayor Milligan said.

“The best process for keeping your animals safe and

well during emergencies is to have a well-made plan and prepare in advance.

“Your plan needs to consider all likely natural disasters for your area including storms, floods, bushfires and heatwaves and it’s also important to consider how those different events might affect your pet’s health and safety, your evacuation routes and end destinations.

“No matter what Mother Nature throws our way, we come out the other side stronger.”

Lowood Rodeo returns to the showgrounds on Saturday and promises to be a night jam packed with entertainment.

The gates of Lowood Showground open at 3pm, with the main event kicking off at 5pm and Mik Oberle entertaining until late.

Lowood Show Society president Lynell Jendra said the program has attracted competitors from all ages.

“There’s bull rides, there’s barrel racing, adults and younger children as well with poddy rides, will be in the main arena,” she said.

“There will be a bar open on the grounds as well,” Ms Jendra said.

“And there is camping for those who want to stay the night.”

Then do a basic disc clean up, clean out your cache in your browser, empty your recycling bin and your downloads folder (you may have to do the others more regularly depending on your space).

“I would definitely recommend taking it to your repairer for a software service, to make sure it’s all clean of ransomware and malware,” Meachelle said.

KEEP IT TIGHT

On the security side, changing your passwords to various websites and accounts with keep you safer and more secure (we’ve discussed in previous columns the importance of a secure password!)

Meachelle suggests doing audit of where you go and log in and updating these passwords.

“I go to Facebook, Commonwealth Bank, whatever, then go and change those passwords,” she said.

“It’s also a good idea to clean up your email subscriptions, all the newsletters you’re getting in your inbox.”

But be wary of clicking links in emails, and log in directly to the website to unsubscribe to be safe.

DON’T FORGET PHONES

While you’re cleaning up your computer, don’t forget you should look after your phones and tablets too.

Uninstalling apps or offloading data can be tedious but there are shortcuts and it’s worth it to free up space and keep them running smoothly.

Physically, speakers and charging ports are notorious for collecting dust and lint.

Give them a gentle clean with a soft brush, but do not go in with anything metallic or hard!

There are mental contacts in your phone (that’s how it charges) and any damage to them, your phone is toast.

If in doubt, get a professional to do it.

Sometimes we don’t look after our tech as well as we should.

After all, don’t we depend on it for work, play, keeping in touch with family, all the important things in life?

We don’t take care of it and then wonder why things stop working, or break, or don’t run like new anymore.

So add your computers, laptops, phones and tablets to your spring cleaning agenda this month.

In its first three weeks, Hypatia’s House has captured the interest and imagination of passers-by in Laidley’s main street.

Shop owner Idell Wadley said the store, named for the Greek philosopher and mathematician, is not just a bookstore.

“I have to clean the windows a lot, because of handprints from people peering in,” she said.

“I would categorise it as a bookstore with benefits.”

In addition to a wide variety of books, prioritising First Nations and south east Queensland authors, the store showcases art, jewellery and more from local suppliers.

“The response from local artisans has been amazing,” Mrs Wadley said.

The response from the curious public has also been positive.

Experience Hypatia’s House at their grand opening on Saturday. Artist Adrian got creative on a recent visit.

“The interest has been wonderful,” she said.

“We’re extremely happy, we have people coming in every day, books are walking out the door.”

Local artistsans crafting jewellery, crafts, unique gifts, painting and more are a vital part of Hypatia’s House’s offerings.

The official opening of the eclectic store takes place on Saturday.

“We have a wonderful day organised for the 23rd,” Mrs Wadley said.

The back rooms to the store will be opened for the first time.

“We have Cheryl of course, Happiness Oracle card reader.

“We also have Peter, The

Turkish Coffee Guy coming in and he will be doing readings of Turkish coffee in a cup.

“A lot of our authors and artists will be coming in on

that day for people to meet them, get a feel for who they are and who we’re supporting.

There will be free face painting and live entertainment throughout the day.

Plus, for the brave, there’s a chance to win a voucher.

“We’re inviting everyone to come dressed up as their favourite book character,” Mrs Wadley said.

Those who choose to dress up have the chance to go in a draw to win a $50 book voucher.

Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to drop in a find out what Hypatia’s House is about.

“We open at 9am and the open day will run until 1pm,” Mrs Wadley said.

“At about 12.30pm we’ll draw the winners of our competitions, but there will be a lot of other fun and games going as well.

“It will be a lot of fun.”

Say thanks to a chef this week

BY GRACE CRICHTON A common way we mark a milestone - whether it’s celebrating a birthday, anniversary, retirement, or simply to because it’s Friday - is to go out to dinner.

While we are enjoying our meals with friends and family, there’s a whole team of dedicated and hard workers to make this possible.

Today is International Chefs Day, a day to recognise the hard work of all the chefs and those in hospitality who make our nights out memorable.

Porters Plainland Hotel head chef Paul Lochel said it’s a day for those who aren’t in the industry to think about what a chef’s life is like.

“We’re working when everyone else is having a good time,” he said.

“It can be late nights, early morning, long shifts.”

your meal and having a good time, you might not be thinking about the chef behind the kitchen doors who may have already worked a 12-hour shift.

“When you come out to dinner and you’re at a big establishment, you probably don’t realise that there’s 300 other people wanting the same thing,” Mr Lochel said.

Sous chef Rodney Horne agreed that this was the biggest challenge in the job.

“Feeding so many people in such a small amount of time, you’re pumping out meals as fast as you can but also making sure all those

meals are top quality and cooked right,” he said.

Junior sous chef Brayden Zabel started work at Porters straight out of high school seven years ago and never looked back.

“I love it here, I have no

plans on leaving any time soon,” he said.

Passionate chefs like Brayden, who fostered a love of cooking in high school, are always striving to give the clients the best.

“It’s really easy to feel disappointed if customers aren’t happy, which affects you mentally because at the end of the day we really do strive to give our customers a good experience,” he said.

Mr Lochel said most chefs are in the industry because they have a passion for good food so they can take mistakes hard.

“Nearly 100% of chefs would have a passion for food and the industry, so when things don’t quite go right or you make mistakes you certainly do take that on board because you’ve got such passion for it.”

Thurston comes to the Creek

Rugby League royalty was in the valley when Johnathan Thurston came to the Murphys Creek Tavern last Friday.

Thurston was the guest speaker at the charity luncheon with the proceeds benefitting Variety and Murphys Creek State School.

He arrived an hour early and went to Murphys Creek school to present each student with a signed water bottle.

During the luncheon event several donated memorabilia item were auctioned to raise money for the school and charity.

A 2015 Grand Final bottle of Bundy rum sold for $600, a State of Origin Jersey sold for $3500, and 2015 grand final memorabilia sold for $2500.

The father of four said he is busier than ever.

“I think my wife likes to get me out of the house,” he said.

He said he is incredibly proud of his achievements in the game but he is most

proud of what he has achieved off the field.

After retiring from the game in 2018, Thurston worked as a commentator with Channel 9, he was

an ambassador for the Queensland Reconciliation Awards, lending his voice to the Recognise campaign to acknowledge Indigenous people in the Constitution, and is currently the ambassador for the Get Ready Queensland campaign.

Thurston was very open and honest on his past.

He spoke of how he ran foul of the law more than once and was rejected by several clubs before his contract offer at the Bulldogs in 2002, then moving to the Cowboys in 2005.

He went on to win two Premierships, three Golden Boots and four Dally M’s.

“I always believed in myself and my work ethic,” he said.

“I was first to training and last to leave.”

Thurston lives by the motto: ‘the harder you work, the luckier you get.’

Thurston was open and honest with the crowd at Murphys Creek Tavern on Friday.

Showground set to shine A grant for $6,109 will allow the Toogoolawah Show Society to save at least $2,000 a year in power costs thanks to the Blair Powering Communities Program.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann congratulated Show Society President, Vern Doyle on the successful application that will replace the existing halogen flood lights with 17 new solar powered LED lights.

“The new lights through the Showground will make the grounds safer for caravan park patrons along with Brisbane Valley Rail Trail users,” Mr Neumann said.

“Importantly, these will lower the Show Society’s overheads, in terms of ongoing power costs and replacement of lights.”

The Blair Powering Communities Program provided $67,700 to seven community groups across the electorate.

The Toogoolawah Showgrounds is located on 20

hectares, which at night can be very dark and feel unsafe.

They have installed eight solar powered flood lights already and will use the grant to complete the lighting

project.

“If patrons feel safe, they are more likely to visit the grounds,” Mr Neumann said.

“More visitors mean more economic stimulus to the township.

“The group will save money on power bills, which means they will be able to invest more in the grounds.

“It’s a boon for Toogoolawah.”

The Blair Powering Communities grants provided up to $12,000 for groups to reduce power use, invest in energy efficiency practices and lower energy bills.

“Better power usage means a smaller carbon footprint.

“Congratulations to the Toogoolawah Show Society for making a difference in their community.”

Learning curve for auctioneer

BY SAM DANIELS The 2021 Australian Livestock and Property Agent Queensland (ALPA) Young Auctioneers Competition was on last week at the Roma Saleyards after originally being slated for the EKKA but moved due to COVID disruptions.

The state title was hotly contested, with over 200 people watching ten of the best auctioneers in the state.

Boonah resident Jacob Gaske was among the finalists.

Despite not taking home the win this time, the Hayes & Co. auctioneer said the event was a wonderful experience that has helped him learn.

“You can’t win them all, the fellas involved were

really handy, it was a good competition, and it was tough,” Jacob said.

“I was glad to be part of

it and just do my best, I just wasn’t good enough on the day, the other fellas were better.

“It’s a great incentive for the young auctioneers in the industry to get them going and it’s been a massive

Class Results - 28th Annual Moreton Classic Beef Show & Sale The threat of a muddy yard & more rain did little to deter the 500 strong showing of cattle at the 28th Annual Moreton Beef Classic Show & Sale last Thursday at the Moreton Saleyards.

LOWOOD STAGS CELEBRATE A MEMORABLE SEASON

The Lowood Stags Junior Rugby League Club have hosted their annual presentation day, with secretary Michelle Robertson saying for a small country club, the teams are highly competitive.

“We are very proud of having two teams make the finals this year, it’s a good nod to the coaches and the support staff but also shows we’ve got some real emerging talent here,” Ms Robertson said.

“We’ve got great boys with great teamwork and our under 14 side this year was a force to be reckoned with.

“They made it to the top four and finished second before getting pipped in the semi-final, and our under

17s side made it to the grand final.”

The presentation ceremony saw over 130 junior and international Lowood Stags enjoy a day filled with jumping castles, mechanical bull rides and a mini ninja course.

The rising star award went to dual winners Cooper Hayes and Cody Marschke.

“The rising star award is in honour of two Lowood Stags life members Nigel Schroeder and Trisha Lee, and it recognises players that have something extra in their game, and both these players do very well at school, so they were deserved winners,” Ms Robertson said.

The Volunteer of the Year award also went to dual recipients, Anthony Smith and Brett Steinke.

4 Aussie Heroes charity calls in to Ma Ma Creek on 300km ride Ma Ma Creek Community Hall welcomed cyclists raising funds for military and first responders when they hosted the Pedals n’ Medals Fundraising Bike Ride for breakfast on Friday.

The ride is currently the 4 Aussie Heroes Foundation’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Founda-

tions charitable work.

The 4 Aussie Heroes Foundation offers aid and support to military and first responder personnel who are struggling and suffering with PTSD and related mental health issues as a result of their service.

4 Aussie Heroes offered their sincere thanks to

the Ma Ma Creek Community Centre for providing nourishment for the cyclists riders on the first day of the 300km ride.

“The hospitality provided

by Eva and the team was first class - and definitely replenished the energy levels for the riders to get back on the road!”

Riders enjoyed breakfast provided Ma Ma Creek Community Hall members, Maree Rosier and Eva Schmidt.
