Don’t cry over milk price rise I CAN’T believe the furore the milk price rise announced last week has caused amongst the public.

Both major supermarkets announced last week the standard two litre milk would rise from $2.60 to $3.10 while three litres will rise from $3.90 to $4.50.

Yes, I know everything is going up in price and it is hard for families, but the question I have is how much of this price rise is going to the dairy farmer.

After talking to dairy farmers at last week’s dairy showcase at the Gatton Show, almost all of them were emphatic that the price at the farm gate or to the dairy farmer must be $1 a litre just to make a living.

One farmer said to me the cost of fertiliser is almost triple the price it was, and they were using double the amount with the weather being so cloudy and wet.

Litter patrol I FELT energised after reading an article in the latest edition of your esteemed newspaper that had the Heading ‘Keeping Withcott clean for 15 Years’.

A gentleman called Eric Canning collects litter in the area and I’d like to congratulate him for his efforts.

On most Saturday afternoons when I lived at Mount Gravatt East in Brisbane, I’d get my trusty plastic shopping bag and start collecting litter from Rover Street, along Logan Road to Carson Lane that runs beside the school.

My efforts were never ofÀFLDOO\ UHFRJQLVHG KRZHYHU

They cannot get the grass to grow.

If the farmer is getting the increase and they are being paid that increase then I for one do not have a problem with the new price, however the majors have both said it is due to an increase in the cost of sourcing, transporting, and packaging.

So once again it looks like the farmers will miss out this time.

As the farmer said the last price increase they got was all gone as the costs gobbled up the margin.

The $1 per litre milk was around for a long time and there was a big reluctance for an increase as the majors said the shelf price to the consumer was most important.

That worry does not seem to be around anymore with the boot on the other foot.

The work was tiring, but rewarding.

I applaud Eric’s interest in keeping his part of the world litter free and God bless him for continuing to do so.

Tony Crossley, Lowood A message to vandals OVER the last few days I

have witnessed two very different sides of humanity.

At some point between Thursday 7th and Sunday 10th just passed the Gatton Historical Village suffered a major break-in.

Several buildings were broken into and were subjected to severe wanton vandalism - doors and windows broken, paint VWUHZQ DURXQG RQ ÁRRUV walls, furniture and exhibits, general ransacking of contents, etc.

The perpetrators showed that they had absolutely no regard or respect for their community whatsoever.

I can only assume that their IQ falls somewhere in the vicinity of my shoe size.

We advertised the

calamity and people came today (Tuesday 12th) to assist our members in cleaning up and repairing the damage.

We even had people from Toowoomba, Rosewood and Munbilla coming to help us clean up.

What a different perspective on humanity that was and we cannot thank them enough for helping us out!

As for the criminals concerned I can only say that \RXU DFWLRQV ZRXOG FRQÀUP to me that you must lie just above krill on the food chain.

Arena named for Terry

TERRY O’Dwyer’s decades of dedication to Laidley Show Society has been immortalised.

Twenty years since Mr O’Dwyer’s passing, family and show society members met at the grounds on 6DWXUGD\ -XO\ WR R൶FLDOO\ commemorate the newly named ‘Terry O’Dwyer Main Arena’.

He served 56 years in the Laidley Show Society, 36 years as ringmaster, and was president from 1992-1993.

Terry’s wife, Mary, and daughter Cathy Ryan said the Laidley Show was his passion.

“I used to keep him going,” Mrs O’Dwyer said.

Mrs Ryan reached out to Laidley Show Society president Craig Wass and asked if he could mention Terry at

Mary O’Dwyer’s late husband, Terry O’Dwyer, was committed to the Laidley Show Society for more than 50 years. The main arena was named in his honour this week.

Instead, Mr Wass and the committee went one more and named the main arena for him.

Mr Wass said it was a simple decision.

“That piece of grass out there was Terry’s passion,” he said.

Mrs Ryan said she was very thankful to Mr Wass and the committee.

“We’re very grateful… it’s a great honour,” she said.

Mr O’Dwyer was committed to the show and the six O’Dwyer children Anne-Marie, Terry, Cathy, Mary, Shaun, and Elizabeth – all played their part.

“Getting ready for the show was always a big deal in our household,” Mrs Ryan said.

“During the show day when dad was busy in the ring, mum would always make this Maryland chicken before the show and we’d sit around the ring and eat [it] as a family and dad would come and check in every now and again.”

Mr O’Dwyer did the Laidley milk run with his parents as a young boy.

He worked for the council, ran a sheep station, cut sugar cane, and share farmed before getting a job as a stable hand at Gatton College where he worked for 36 years.

He is remembered as a good man, a good husband, and very community minded. $Q R൶FLDO VLJQ ZLOO EH constructed over the entry gate.

Citizen scientist mission to plant 1,000 trees

BY JACOB HAYDEN GET YOUR hands dirty this Saturday July 23 and help plant 1,000 trees in Toogoolawah for Conservation Volunteers Australia’s (CVA) ongoing habitat restoration and disaster recovery efforts.

The Planting Day will be held next to the Condensery with the aim to build a koala corridor along the creek as part of the ongoLQJ %XVKÀUH &RPPXQLW\ Recovery and Resilience project for the Somerset region.

Event organiser Maria Borges said guest speaker, retired wildlife vet and Ipswich Koala Protection Society (IKPS) president Rebecca Larkin will discuss kola preservation.

“She’s going to give us a talk about what people can do to help koalas in their area.,” Ms Borges

said.

“It’s a great day for people to get involved in helping the local wildlife.

“Planting trees, in my own experience, is very rewarding later in life when you see a tree that you planted provided a home for a koala.”

Stalls will be open 9am to 1pm from other groups like Friends of the Forest from Linville, Brisbane Valley Kilcoy Landcare, CVA and Somerset Citizen Science volunteers.

A sausage sizzle will run from 11am with funds going towards IKPS rescue services.

Somerset Regional Council donated the 1,000 trees for the planting ahead of National Tree Day on Sunday July 31.

Uni and locals team up for koala study

BY GRACE CRICHTON GRASSROOTS activist group Care4esk have a plan to help the local koala population.

Teaming up with a leading university, the group are applying for a government grant to survey the koala populations of Mount Glen Rock and Sandy Creek.

Care4esk spokesperson Darren Bate said not enough is known about the koala population surrounding Esk. “Since May in Esk, we know of two koalas that have had to be euthanised because of chlamydia,” Mr Bate said.

“We don’t know how big our group of koalas are, but WZR NRDODV DUH VLJQL¿FDQW ´ However, the RSPCA Hospital could save another young male koala from the same fate.

If successful in their grant application, Care4esk volunteers and the university team will conduct two surveys 12 months apart, using drone surveillance and trained dogs

for scat detection.

The scat analysis provides information on the overall health of the koala population and their genetic connectivity.

“And most importantly, any signs of chlamydia,” Mr Bate said.

The project will ideally result in the rehabilitation and revegetation of relevant land with koala food trees.

“The main thing now is we’ve got to meet this deadline and we won’t know probably for a month or so if we’re successful,” Mr Bate said.

“If we’re successful, it’s going to be fantastic and we’ll try our best to get it all completed in that time frame.

“And if we’re not I can at least know that I’ve done everything I can to get it happening and there might be another one in the future.”

In the afternoon, Dr Young held a choral workshop with an initial focus on technical work.

The day culminated in performances of Jerome Kern’s ‘Pick Yourself Up’, and ‘Shall We Gather at the River’, a spiritual by Robert Lowry.

Visiting choirs also performed their own items to an appreciative audience.

Clean-up continues at Historical Village

After lodging police reports, the society put out a call for assistance to help repair the damage inside the building.

“We’d like to thank the community for coming together at a horrible time,” Mr

But the work, like the ongoing police investigation, is not over yet.

New community market for Gatton GATTON welcomes a new community market this weekend.

Cahill Park Community Market grand opening is Sunday July 24 from 9am.

Spirit of the Valley Events president Idell Wadley said the eclectic market would have 50 stalls plus live entertainment and lots of food vendors.

“We’re very excited to have partnered with Cahill Park Sports Complex and we will be using the old AFL grounds,” Mrs Wadley said.

“It will be a lazy Sunday market where you can come along and stroll through all the amazing stalls.

“Take your time, it GRHVQ·W ÀQLVK XQWLO SP so if you’ve got church or sport you can still make it.”

The opening market

has free children’s activities including face painting and bracelet making.

“It’s a very community focussed market,” Mrs Wadley said.

“All of the proceeds are invested back into the community by way of our free events.”

Held on the fourth Sunday of the month, the markets have space for more vendors to join.

“We’re particularly interested to talk to fresh produce and second-hand,” Mrs Wadley said.

Remembering Ivan Reck IVAN Henry Reck was never one to beat around the bush.

The father of six passed away on June 5, 2022 and stayed at his home in Mulgowie until the end.

Ivan was the eldest of three children, born on October 3, 1930 to Henry and Hannah Reck of Mulgowie.

Ivan attended Mulgowie State School, headed by Mr Bob Simpson. ,YDQ ¿UVW PHW -RDQ KLV SUHWty young bride to be, while she was accompanying her brother Col Luck, who did the local cream run.

After a brief romance, Ivan and Joan were married in the Laidley Catholic Church on January 15, 1955.

Their marriage produced six children, Daryl, Robyn, Murray, Garry, Karen and Clynton.

Ivan spent much of his young working life labouring for local farmers and by

all accounts was a reliable competent workman, doing much onion cutting and potato picking as well as milking.

To support his family, Ivan purchased his father Henry’s farm upon Henry’s retirement in the early 1960s.

This is when the next generation of Reck’s farming began, partly consisting of a small dairy herd, beef cattle and pigs.

Great pride was taken in the production of good quality KD\ DQG FKD൵ Ivan insisted those bags be tightly dumped, then sown with precision, while being quick about it.

As a young man, Ivan was fond of visiting the local Mr Fix It man of Blenheim, his grandfather Otto Jackwitz.

Time there was also spent with his Uncle Ernie who had a fascination of all things mechanical, maybe accounting for, or at least contributing

to, Ivan’s purchase of a BSA motorcycle (probably with his father’s disapproval).

Ivan’s good mates Doug Jackwitz and Errol Bachmann shared his passion for bikes.

These young men on some Saturday nights would pick up D ¿YH JDOORQ NHJ UDFH XS LQWR the hills of Blenheim, then drink the keg dry, somehow getting home safely before sunup.

Ivan once rode his horse in the Mulgowie Hotel and had a cool ale while seated in the saddle.

One social activity Ivan particularly enjoyed was playing cards.

From early days in local lamp lit farmhouses through to the modern era of electricity, shouts, laughter and knuckles pounding on tables when a round was won or lost, cigarette smoke curled to the ceiling while the blokes downed the odd beer.

Ivan was proud of his German heritage which included wurst making, an art learnt mostly from his parents Henry and Hannah.

Ivan believed wurst making was as much about bringing his family together as the actual product.

He wanted his boys to stay connected.

Ivan shared a love of horses with friend Albert Stokes, which took them to the famous Warwick Rodeo regularly, camping in swags, sharing yarns usually about dogs, cattle and horses.

He loved good mates and the company of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Champion dogs chasing cattle and acclaim

BY JACOB HAYDEN CATTLE dogs and trainers swarmed Toogoolawah for the Australian Championships Cattle Dog Trials.

Around 200 dogs competed in the four day event, herding cattle through gates and pens to score points.

Toogoolawah Show Society member Steele Cannell said the trials went very well and Queensland won the State of Origin competiWLRQ ± ZKHUH ¿YH GRJV IURP Queensland and NSW competed against each other.

“It was neck and neck the whole way,” he said.

“It’s been a long four days but it went really well, I think the competitors enjoyed it… it’ll be an Australian Cham-

CARDIGRAS is coming to Gatton and the event is now seeking local businesses’ sponsorship.

Event organiser Rohan Robertson said he was planning regular events and was in it for the long haul.

“We’re looking at making this at least the next three years,” he said.

“I’m looking at making a long-term commitment to the Gatton area, not just come in, do a few car shows and leave.”

Mr Robertson is planning monthly meets at Cahill Park, kicking off in August with a Sunday session and later launching a monthly dinner with the cars on Fridays.

There are also big events for International Men’s Day and New Years Eve in the pipeline.

The car shows have the potential to attract visitors from Brisbane and the Darling Downs, with most enthusiasts taking several hours’ drive to go to a good show.

“If you get a nice area like Gatton, where it’s two hours drive from Brisbane at the most, it’s not that far from the Darling 'RZQV« SHRSOH ZLOO GHÀnitely come up from it,” Mr Robertson said.

BOWLS DOWNS DISTRICT BOWLING ASSOCIATION PENNANTS 2022 The Lockyer Valley clubs endured a tough start to the Downs DBA 2022 Pennants season.

In Section A, Gatton travelled to Toowoomba Bowls Club going down 89 to 50. While Trevor Wheeler’s rink had success with a 29-16 victory over Russ Nicholson, Colin Daniels and John Miles were outplayed with results of 2612 and 47-9 respectively going against them.

In Section B, Shaun Kiepe’s rink from South Toowoomba 1 proved then difference with a 30 shot to 9 victory over Laidley’s Ross Knight. Former Gatton player Brian Zischke (South Toowoomba 1) managed to defeat Doug McGuire (Laidley) by 1 shot while Jamie Dickson (Laidley) played out a 20 all draw with Dudley Schefe (South Toowoomba 1). South Toowoomba ended up running out 67 to 45 shot winners.

Next weekend (23rd July) sees both sides playing at home with Gatton taking on Drayton 1 at 12.30pm while Laidley will take on last years’ runners up West Toowoomba 1 at Laidley tarting at 12 noon.

TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS CLUB Tuesday 12th July was our Pub Day. Due to some wet weather we were only able to play one game. Winners on the day were Sandra’s Team: Todd Currell, Ken Philipson and Rick Lewis. Runners up were Gatton team: Jim Baldwin, Dudley Cone, Colin Daniel and Kerry Green. First Round Winners were Gavin’s Team: P. Boisen, Gavin Linnen, D. Berich and D. Booth. We thank Des Shields for his continued sponsorship. Without our Sponsors we would not have our game.

On Wednesday 13th July, we had a team travel to Kilcoy for their Pub Day. Keith McWhirter, Phil Gregory , Pauline Lawson and Gerrit Winkler had a win and a loss but had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Thanks Kilcoy for the invite.

On Thursday 14th July at home, we only had 5 players who played triples with a double lead. Winners were Gerrit Winkeler, Lyn McWhirter and Keith McWhirter who defeated Linda Winkeler, John Greany and Keith McWhirter.

Celebrating 20 years of tourism on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail SOMERSET Council has celebrated the 20th anniversary of the construction of the Fernvale to Lowood section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT).

7KLV ZDV WKH ¿UVW VHFWLRQ built of what is now Australia’s longest recreational rail trail.

Lehmann said this was a milestone worth celebrating.

“The BVRT is now huge business for our region and it all started with an initiative

by Esk Shire Council in July 2002,” Cr Lehmann said.

“There was some understandable trepidation in the community when the eight-kilometre section was

being built in 2002. ³&RXQFLO R൶FHUV DQG ODbourers worked diligently to ensure that trail was developed to the highest standard, delivering a great outcome for our community, with minimal impacts or disruptions.”

“Much credit goes to the council of the day for having the foresight and persistence *Space restrictions may apply

to build the Fernvale to Lowood section of the BVRT.” Since the development of the initial section, council has collaboratively worked with stakeholders to develop and upgrade other sections of the trail throughout the region.

This culminated in the delivery of the Toogoolawah

to Moore section in 2018.

“The BVRT now runs for 161 kilometres and has attracted hundreds of thousands of visits over the past 20 years to events such as council’s annual Somerset Rail Trail Fun Run or Ride,” Cr Lehmann said.

“It’s also facilitated the development of new businesses

and tourism experiences.

“Somerset is now the undisputed adventure cycling capital of Queensland.

“We will keep planning and building transformative projects for Somerset that people can look back on as proudly in 20 years’ time as we look back on the Fernvale to Lowood BVRT now.”
