Crossing repair falls through cracks BY JACOB HAYDEN ESK residents Rob and Kathy Wager waited patiently for almost two years for repairs to the first crossing of Falls Road on Esk Creek. Like many residents in the February-March 2022 floods, the Wagers became disconnected as floodwaters ripped through crossings and road networks. “We were in here for about two weeks and getting pretty jack of it by then, because they got everybody except Scrub Creek Road residents,” Mr Wager said. Eventually the Falls Rd crossing was filled with rocks, allowing residents and property owners to cross with high-clearance vehicles and 4WDs. “The water aspect went away but it was still a very rough crossing… once you get across its very sandy, so it’s a bogging hazard for 2WD vehicles,” Mr Wager said.

Rob and Kathy Wager at the first crossing of Falls Road on Esk Creek, repaired earlier this month to allow 2WD access for the first time since the February-March 2022 floods. PHOTO: JACOB HAYDEN

“We’ve been very quiet, very patient, very understanding and very cooperative, and now we’re not.” Readers may recall the Wagers won the Native Garden category in the 2022 Somerset Regional Council (SRC) Garden Competition. “To get the judges here, they weren’t allowed by council policy to cross through the water on the crossing, despite the fact they

had exactly the same vehicle that we used to ferry them across,” Mr Wager said. The Wagers also run a small rural business, breeding Border Collies, birds, and fish. “Imagine when you’re selling $10 worth of fish but you’ve got to drive 6km to pick up your client to come and get them,” Mr Wager said. “It’s just not viable.”

The Wagers said they met with two SRC staff who told them council would apply for Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to build a more resilient crossing. “We figured there’s probably a good year to wait for them to go through due process and get tenders done, so we waited patiently,” Mr Wager said. Last month, the Wagers

wrote to SRC to enquire about the funding, only to be told all approved works under the DRFA had been completed. SRC chief executive officer Andrew Johnson said council identified the first crossing for betterment funds, but ‘unfortunately, the crossing upgrade was not supported per the Queensland Reconstruction Authority guidelines’.

Earlier this month, the crossing and a following section of road were repaired to allow 2WD access, however Mrs Wager said it was only a temporary solution. “The next flow event on that creek is going to wreck the work they’ve done, and it’s likely to happen on the close-down period over Christmas, looking at the weather at the moment,” Mrs Wager said. Mr Wager suggested SRC negotiate funding under the current arrangements regardless of closing dates. “Failing this, it is our position that council immediately fund a suitable crossing from the current works budget to be redressed against some future grant or budget.” Mr Johnson said SRC would continue to work with the Wagers and other residents of Falls Road. “However, at this stage, there are no plans to upgrade the crossing on Falls Road,” he said.

prone houses Hannah’s journey as an Flood removed as buy back Indigenous leader scheme underway BY JACOB HAYDEN

HANNAH Eastwell applied herself in 2023, growing from a shy student to role model thanks to the support of Lowood State High School’s community education counsellor (CEC). Because of her growth into a leadership role, the year 11 student was awarded the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF) Young Indigenous Leader award. Hannah said she applied for everything offered to her by Lowood State High School CEC Rosemary Ward, including the Beyond the Broncos program and the QATSIF scholarship. “She’s just very encouraging, like she pushes you to do things… she tries to get everyone involved, which is great.”

The Beyond the Broncos program offered Queensland schools the opportunity to enrich the learning experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in years 10 to 12. Ms Ward said she was impressed with how Hannah

applied herself for the QATSIF scholarship. “Hannah was in grade 10 and the Broncos say ‘keep an eye out for kids who could be potential leaders’,” Mrs Ward said. “I said to her ‘the more you go and expose yourself

FOURTEEN Lockyer Valley properties have been removed or demolished under the Voluntary Home Buy-Back Scheme (VHBB) with the remaining seven to be completed early next year. The VHBB is a jointly funded initiative delivered through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, enabling people in flood impacted zones to relocate to safer areas. Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said 21 homes were settled under the VHBB in the Lockyer Valley. “This is great news as those families in vulnerable areas have capitalised on the opportunity to move away from these high-risk locations,” she

said. “The land will be rezoned to a non-occupiable use, which brings it in line with council’s new (draft) Lockyer Valley Planning Scheme that prevents any future highrisk use from occurring on these highly vulnerable sites. “Our intention is to see this land repurposed for agricultural use rather than sit vacant and require ongoing maintenance for no real value to the community.” Demolition and property removal to date has occurred in Lower Tenthill (2 properties), Grantham (7 properties), Glenore Grove (3 properties), Lockyer Waters (1 property), and Adare (1 property).

Your Town’s winners announced AS THE dust settles on Your Town 2023, we hope this competition has stimulated the shop locally message across our region. We have many fabulous and unique stores across our region, many that won’t be seen anywhere else. While ultimately the end game is to get residents to spend locally and see what is available in our region, we have been overwhelmed with the success of this year’s promotion. Congratulations to the three winners announced in our second draw, held on Friday December 15 at the Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival. I was joined by Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan, who drew the following winners: Melissa Graffunder who shopped at BP Gatton, Margaret Dahl who shopped at Lockyer Laundromat, and Melissa Wolff who shopped at Rudi’s Place in Esk. Entries submitted this year were up and most

businesses said it increased their foot traffic. Many new businesses signed on this year and were astonished by the success. The concept of Your Town is a simple one: reward those who shop locally with the chance to win cash to spend locally. This is something we as a community newspaper are passionate about. We need to do everything we can to stimulate local business and keep residents shopping locally. Your Town will return in 2024 to drive the shop locally message. We congratulate the six winners who each won a $1,000 gift card. This money will be spent across the participating businesses as yet another way we are reinforcing the shop locally message. So, as you shop with what little time we have left before Christmas remember

to shop locally first. You will save time and you may be surprised exactly what you will find in Your Town. Bruce Horrocks, General manager The Lockyer & Somerset Independent

Providing Christmas delights over the festive season BY JESSE HAMILTON THE Gatton Meals on Wheels team is bringing Christmas delight to its clients, generously donating freshly cooked treats for each to savour during the festive season. The volunteer-run service delivers to people with various support needs 365 days a year, with the Gatton Branch catering for 65 to 70 clients daily. Gatton Meals on Wheels president Kev Saxby said the Christmas treats were a simple gesture to provide cheer and happiness during the holiday season. “It’s all fresh cooked by the committee out of their pocket to help,” he said. “The Gatton Lions Club also provided fruit cakes for us as well, it gives people on Christmas something extra.” Mr Saxby said the group were strongly looking for volunteers to continue to make deliveries possible in the new year. “Everyone’s aging and our only real problem is getting

younger volunteers to do deliveries,” he said. “All that is required is a couple hours spare whenever people are able to. “Sometimes, a Meals on

Wheels deliverer is the only person they might see all day, so it also provides an important check-up.” Gatton local Elizabeth Browne has used the service

for the last 10 weeks after suffering a broken hip and said she could not have gone without the companionship Meals on Wheels provide. “These amazing team of

Team shave for a cure raises thousands A LOCKYER Valley team went under the clippers to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation on December 1. Rhonda McLucas, Amelia Morris, Rosa Nangoye, Cameron Panzram, and Calissa Morgan collectively raised $6,444.40 by taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave. Amelia graduated from Lockyer District High School this year, prompting her to take the plunge. “I’d always wanted to and I thought it would be wonderful

if we could raise money,” she said. Rhonda, her grandmother, jumped on board. “If you do that, I’ll do it with you and we’ll get some money toward cancer funds for it,” Rhonda said. “It all helps. “We’ve lost friends and family over the years, I just absolutely hate cancer, I have to do something about it.” Along with fellow LDHS graduates Rosa and Cameron, and Rhonda’s colleague Calissa,

the team held their shave at Porters Plainland Hotel. “It was wonderful to see so many people there,” Amelia said. They raised a significant amount on the night. “We took a lot of funds that night, over $1,000 just from having it at Porters,” Rhonda said. “A very big thank you to Melissa from Hair with Soul… and to Porters for their fantastic support.” GRACE CRICHTON

Volunteers honoured for commitment to SES BY JESSE HAMILTON

THE Somerset SES Unit held its annual break-up dinner at the Somerset Civic Centre on December 8 in a night of celebration honouring the unit’s selfless volunteers. Some of the branch’s most longstanding members were awarded on the evening. Unit local controller Andy Bickerton commemorated 40 years of dedicated service, while Lowood group leader Carol Conboy was awarded the Commissioner Certificate for more than 25 years of service. Somerset Regional SES Unit local controller Andy Bickerton said the values SES workers show was only found in a rare type of person. “They’re great people, they’re community-oriented people,” he said.

“There just aren’t enough people who want to say ‘I’ll give up my family time to come and train and be called out on short notice’.” Mr Bickerton said SES volunteers serve a range of roles within their community. “We perform a range of roles, from an activation in bad weather to going out and helping find someone who’s stuck somewhere,” he said.

A NEW space for community has opened on 10 Railway Street, Gatton. Not-for-profit enterprise Gatt & Co. co-directors Maree Rosier and Jacqui Blanch welcomed the community to the launch function on December 14. Maree said the space was ‘some years in the conjuring’ and thanked the volunteers involved. “We’re very grateful to Helping Hands Network Foundation who have

funded a year’s rent and paid for our coordinator.” Maree said they tried not to pre-imagine how the space might be used. “It was our job to get the space so that community could come in and connect in whatever way they would like to connect,” she said. The physical space marries with their digital hub for connecting local businesses, which is almost online.

There is an uptick in farmers’ confidence nationally this year, according to Rabobank’s latest survey. PHOTO: CANVA

Signs of ‘green shoots’ optimism AUSTRALIA’S farmers are approaching the end of the year with a hint of improving optimism as rural confidence levels nudge slightly higher in the latest quarter, reports food and agricultural bank Rabobank. The Q4 Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey, released on December 13, found net level farmer confidence across the nation edged up

marginally, after having dropped to the fourth lowest level in the survey’s history in the previous quarter. Sentiment was mixed across the nation, with Victoria, Western Australia, and Tasmania reporting lower farmer confidence levels. But this was offset by an improved outlook reported by primary producers in New South Wales, South Austra-

lia, and Queensland. Overall, expectations around commodity prices were cause for optimism among those farmers with a positive outlook, while good seasonal conditions were nominated as a driver of confidence by 30 per cent of farmers expecting the agricultural economy to improve in the coming 12 months. RABOBANK

David and everyone at Stariha Auctions would like to wish all our valued clients a Merry and Safe Christmas.

Kia Australia CEO Damien Meredith said the model would liven up the upper large SUV and electric vehicle market. “It’s big, full electric on a dedicated EV platform, provides seven seats, equipped

with some really impressive technology and it’s locally tuned; there really isn’t an apples to apples competitor in the local new car market,” Mr Meredith said.

Developed over a period of 44 months, every facet of the EV9 has been pushed to the limits of durability at both Kia’s global Namyang R&D Center in Korea and locally

on Australian roads. During the global testing phase of the Kia EV9, it was relentlessly subjected to a gruelling verification program on a 4WD climbing hill

and a rough terrain track, as well as a deep-water wading test, to ensure maximum reliability even in the most challenging conditions. As the new flagship model,

the Kia EV9 will be the most advanced product in the range, introducing several firsts for Kia in Australia. This includes Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA2), Kia’s next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance System which functions only when driving on a freeway or motorway. HDA 2 fundamentally builds on adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, combining with Lane Following Assist (LFA) to keep the car centred in the lane even when driving through a curve. The Kia EV9 will also introduce the next generation of Kia’s in-house developed infotainment and telematics system. The Kia EV9 will be introduced in Australia with the long-range 99.8 kWh AWD and standard-range 76.1 kWh RWD battery options.

AN UNBREAKABLE CONNECTION 1968

From the moment it made its way onto our shores over 50 years ago, the HiLux quickly established itself as an Australian classic. A trusted workhorse and family mover, there’s hardly a city, farm or worksite in the country without a HiLux. And for good reason. Steadfast and rugged, the HiLux has proved itself from generation to generation. Nothing beats the unbreakable connection between you and your HiLux. SCAMMERS and fraudsters are increasingly active during the holiday season, but there are simple things people can do to keep safe. Lockyer Valley computer technician Gavin Homes said customers shopping online need to question everything advertised to them. He said buyers should beware when making online purchases, and choose to pay through PayPal or PayID KAOS MotorcyclemonTeam instead of transferring ey to a bank account. “When you do a PayID

Tai Chi practice is suitable for everybody.

Top Tai Chi instructor coming to Gatton TAI CHI International Arts Queensland (TCIAQ) will welcome top instructor Banyin Lee to their class on June 20. Instructor Diane Sudhaus said Banyin was one of the ‘absolute top instructors’. “You can’t get much better than him,” she said. TCIAQ hold two classes in Gatton, along with classes in Esk, Brisbane, and Maryborough. She welcomed newcomers to the class on Monday if they are

curious to find out more about the practice. “It would be good for anyone to come along,” she said. “You can watch, you can join in, you don’t have to be a member.” Mrs Sudhaus said the practice is very affordable at $150 per year with a one off $50 joining fee. “It’s for everybody, and it’s not going to break your bank.” Tai Chi classes are Mondays and Wednesdays 1pm-3pm at the Gatton Senior Citizens Hall.

THE LOCKYER AND SOMERSET INDEPENDENT

MOORE WEEKLY STARS December 18-24, 2023 ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22) The opposition between your ruler, Venus, and Uranus is exact on Tuesday. So the challenge is to get the balance right between your independence and the needs of loved ones; between being cautious and being spontaneous. An impulsive online spending spree on Monday or Tuesday could see you full of regrets later in the week. If you’re planning a weekend getaway, make sure you closely check all travel arrangements, bookings and accommodation – twice!

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Expect the unexpected! Many Scorpios are primed for parties and other Yuletide celebrations as sociable, va-voom Venus transits through your sign until December 29. So it’s time to dance, charm, shmooze, shimmy, sparkle and shine! But on Thursday a loved one could hit you with some surprise news. And – with Mercury reversing through your money zone from Saturday – resist the temptation to spend up big over the Christmas/New Year period.

Mercury is reversing through your career/reputation zone, so make sure you behave yourself at the office Christmas party. And you also need to think twice about posting controversial comments online (especially about work or colleagues). Plus – with a tricky Venus/Uranus opposition – if you are too impatient, distracted (or even reckless), then you could find yourself involved in an argument or accident. Your Yuletide motto? ‘Act in haste, repent at leisure.’ Hey Bulls … this week Jupiter (which is transiting through your sign) makes a positive connection with Mercury. Which favours communication, education, organisation and productive work. But remember Mercury is in retrograde mode (and it also links up with Saturn) so results won’t be instant, and success won’t be overnight. Don’t be all work and no play, though – make the time to kick up your heels (or should that be hooves?) and have some fun.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

You’re in the mood to let your hair down and party but don’t accept things at face value. With Mercury reversing through your mystery zone, look beneath the surface gloss to discover what’s really going on. And – when you’re buying last-minute presents – Saturn encourages you to choose gifts that are practical and useful. It’s also a good idea to get as much of the food preparation done as you can before Christmas Day. Organisation is the key to a cool Yule.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

It’s time for Crabs to get cracking! When it comes to work, habits, health and fitness, the more proactive and organised you are, the better the results will be. However – with Mercury retrograde – a lack of focus, direction (and diplomacy) could temporarily side-track relationships and confuse you. And don’t let a dubious acquaintance lead you down the primrose path to trouble (romantically or professionally). Keep your trusty Truth Detector set on high.

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

Curious Jupiter and adventurous Uranus are charging through your career zone, so it’s time to stretch yourself in exciting new professional directions. But Mercury is reversing through your work zone, so you need to prepare carefully and plan thoroughly before you launch exciting projects in the New Year. Your motto for the week is from birthday great, actress and activist Jane Fonda (who turns 86 on Thursday): “Stay curious, keep learning and keep growing.”

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

Courtesy of retro Mercury, you can’t escape close relationships this week. Don’t approach things with the same old stale attitude – it’s time to recalibrate! If there is a problem: fix it. If there is a misunderstanding: sort it out. If there is too much distance between you and a loved one: get closer. The more positive energy and hard work you pour into partnerships, the more beneficial they will be. Xmas Eve is all about connecting with family and friends.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

The Sun and Mars are charging through your sign, so you’re raring to bust out of your comfort zone and do something daringly different as you travel, explore and/or experiment. But retrograde Mercury also moves into Sagittarius, so prudence and patience will take you further than spontaneity and speed. As writer (and fellow Sagittarian) George Eliot wisely observed: “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) With Mercury retrograding through Capricorn until Saturday (when it reverses back into Sagittarius), it’s time to reflect, reconsider, re-evaluate, recalibrate and reboot. The Sun transits into your sign on Friday, where it stays until January 20. So it’s also a good week to inspire those around you in positive, powerful, long-lasting ways. As actress (and birthday great) Jane Fonda says: “I want to be inspiring to myself, to my kids, my family, and my friends.” AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18) The Venus/Uranus opposition suggests a house move, family fiasco, uninvited guests dropping in or some other kind of domestic pre-Xmas drama. And some Aquarians could experience disruptions at work. Whatever happens, strive to get the balance right between your public life and your private responsibilities. Retrograde Mercury also pushes you to revisit and revise an old dream. But don’t get so carried away that you throw the baby out with the bathwater! PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20) This week the sociable Sun and proactive Mars are both charging through your career zone. So fire up the festive charm as you party with work colleagues and improve relations with clients or customers. However – with Uranus stirring things up and Mercury in retrograde mode – you may find relations with a relative, friend or neighbour become rather strained. So it’s also time to fire up your Piscean diplomacy skills – they are hiding there somewhere! COPYRIGHT Joanne Madeline Moore 2023

We hope to see you all there. Bring a friend. Saturday 16 was our breakup and trophy presentation lunch. All who attended were treated to a lovely Christmas lunch. I wish all members a very Merry Christmas and a better New Year. See you all in 2024. CRICKET LOCKYER A GRADE Gatton Fordsdale hung on to beat the brave Glenore Grove Roos in an upside down match. Gatton Fordsdale, batting first put up 9-216, with the lower order batsmen, Hayden Kleidon, 60 and Brendan Smith, 36 ensuring a good score. Cameron Utz and Paul Zischke both took 3 wickets. The Roos were in big trouble, before the tail wagged through Cameron Utz on 40 n.o and Jaxon Utz 29 n.o, getting them close. Opening batsman, Steve Kleidon came good with the ball with 5-22. A game where the bowlers batted well and the batters bowled well. Helidon edged past the Forest Hill Goats in a close contest. The Goats posted 8-186, with Russell Sippel best on 38. Helidon were 5 down when, with overs running out, they knocked the runs off through Matthew McMahon on 67 and Mark Ashley on 52. In the feature “Pink Stumps” charity match for the McGrath Foundation, Mayor Tanya Milligan assumed toss duties with Ropehill making the correct call, and batting. In dreadful heat, they posted a modest 137 with many contributors, but no standouts. Mulgowie started well through Matty Taber on 28, but Black Ducks Captain, Rohan Janke was an absolute destroyer with 5-3. Well done to these Clubs for a brilliant fundraising event. The competition has rarely been so evenly matched at the Christmas break. The Lockyer Cricket community extends seasons greetings to all players and supporters. VALLEY VIKINGS Despair for the Vikings to get within two balls of saving the day, in an heroic fightback. Chasing a modest 205, Centrals were cruising at 1-153 when rain halted play at Limestone. When play resumed, a half hour was added for lost time. Incredibly, the Vikings took 6-50 and with just two balls left before stumps, were still 4 runs in front. A draw would have been a fair result, but a six was hit to seal it for Centrals. The Vikings will start 2024 in 4th position, needing to produce their best work to earn a top three spot. under 18s, with Ross Hooper taking out the A-grade fixture. Fun was had by all on the day as flip flops replaced the paddle for the novelty first to 21 thong-pong competition. Gatton Table Tennis Association President Bill Hooper said it was the best year since before COVID for the club as far as numbers.

“We ended up playing two grades for the second half of the year,” Hooper said. “We had good growth, we ended up with about 30 players compared to 20 last year.” The Gatton Table Tennis Association Hall on Woodland Road will open up for play in February of the new year.

Zeb French won the brotherhood rivalry taking out the under 18s singles trophy against older brother Ethan.

Pink Stumps Day raises funds FROM PAGE 36 “Each year we’re hoping to build it bigger and bigger,” Janke said. Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan opened play and completed the toss with Ropehill electing to bat first.

She commended the teams for their fundraising efforts, and for taking to the pitch in such heat. “I think the McGrath Foundation are doing amazing, amazing work,” she said. “I take my hat off to you

all. “It’s a wonderful cause.” Donations can be made at pinkisthecolour. com.au/fundraisers/ ropehillvmulgowie See sports results on page 34 for match results.

CRICKETERS GO PINK BY GRACE CRICHTON

ROPEHILL Cricket Club hosted Mulgowie Cricket Club for their annual Pink Stumps Day on December 16. This is the second year the clubs have held the event to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. Ropehill Cricket Club president and A Grade captain Rohan Janke said Mulgowie initiated the charity game last year as there were players on both teams who have been touched by breast cancer. “It’s a bit of something that we can give back,” he said. “If you’ve got a love for cricket, you’ve got a love for the McGrath Foundation and all the great stuff they do.” Mulgowie and Rophill A Grade sides went head to head

while the Ropehill B Grade sides put up a double header on the second oval. “We thought what a great time because we’ve got two B Grade sides to have our own double header over there,” Janke said. Janke thanked the numerous sponsors who donated prizes for their raffle, from which all proceeds were donated to the charity. “And all that goes to the McGrath Foundation, there’s not a cent that goes to anyone else,” he said. The teams’ iconic pink shirts helped raise funds too, with $25 from each purchase going toward the foundation. Next year, Pink Stumps Day will be hosted by the Mulgowie Cricket Club. CONTINUES 35
