Decorate for Your Town

LOCAL businesses, it’s time to get creative and get noticed.

As part of the annual shop local promotion Your Town, an initiative of The Lockyer & Somerset Independent, participating businesses are encouraged to decorate their

pride in their town.

The store decoration competition is designed to give participating businesses the creative inspiration to dress up their businesses in an eye-catching style during the premium selling season leading into Christmas.

The Independent’s General Manager Bruce Horrocks offered tips for those businesses interesting in taking part.

“The theme for Your Town decorating is simple,” he said.

“Use plenty of blue and white to align with the campaign colours and grab the attention of passers-by.

“Think outside the box and decorate for maximum impact.

“The businesses that go hard and stand out will be the ones that get noticed in this

campaign.”

Mr Horrocks said Your Town was about getting locals to look and shop in their own

“This campaign is all about getting locals to shop and spend money locally as a lead into Christmas,” he said.

“It’s important to know what is available in your

shop online or at the big box retailers.”

But there are more reasons to go all-out in the decorating competition.

The Independent a $1,500 advertising package to the winning business of the store decorating competition.

Second place will win a $1,000 advertising package and $500 in advertising is up for grabs for third place.

“So put your thinking caps on, get creative and stand out in Your Town,” Mr Horrocks said.

If your business would like to participate in Your Town call The Independent on 45745200.

Saving the koalas with 770 trees

SEVENTY trees were planted at Yimbun park, north of Toogoolawah, on Saturday October 15 to launch the Greening the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail project in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

A further 700 trees will be planted at the same location in March 2023.

Governor of Queensland, Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM attended the ceremony alongside Member for Blair Shayne Neumann, Somerset Regional Councillors, and members of Conservation Volunteers Australia, BVRT Users Association, Toogoolawah & District Historical Society and event organisers Brisbane Valley – Kilcoy Landcare Association.

Her Excellency Dr Young had spent the worst of the 2021-22 COVID-19 pandemic providing guidance to Queenslanders, and she said health continued to be

her focus as the Governor of Queensland.

“One thing I want to do as Governor is to try and promote health and wellbeing wherever I can,” Dr Young said.

The Governor said the Greening the BVRT project

helped improve both people’s and the environment’s health wildlife repopulation.

“This is a beautiful, beautiful part of Queensland,” Dr Young said.

Shayne Neumann MP said local wildlife rescuers Jade

and Charlie Lewis were two of the greatest advocates of koala conservation.

“If we don’t do better on koala conservation, we’re going to be looking at them in museums and north of the Murray River we won’t be seeing koalas, that’s the reali-

ty,” Mr Neumann said.

“I want to praise people like Jade and Charlie who have been advocating, irritating, and annoying governments of all levels for years about

this.”

Charlie said she had placed ing signs at the age of 15.

“I’m 50 next year and I’m still being an irritation to the government,” she said.

Joanne McEwan lives by the planting site in Yimbun park and has worked closely with conservation groups.

“I notice when the koalas change trees they cross the highway, and that’s where the fatalities are happening,” Ms McEwan said.

“Once this is all established and they’re growing, they may come this way and avoid the highway.”

Fire ants affect us all

South East

They’re small, coppery brown, feisty and sting, and if we don’t all work together they’ll be here to stay.

First found in Brisbane in 2001, fire ants are a category 1 restricted matter (Biosecurity Act 2014) and considered one of the world’s most invasive pests. And rightly so, they can have irreversible consequences on our environment, economy, human health and outdoor way of life.

They can destroy crops, damage machinery, and render paddocks, parks, playgrounds and backyards unusable.

If we don’t work together to stop them, fire ants could infest all of Australia—costing billions of dollars each year and having a devastating effect on the Australian lifestyle.

They have the potential to surpass the combined annual damage done by Australia’s worst pests: feral cats, wild dogs, foxes, camels, rabbits and cane toads.

Love your backyard cricket, barbecues and walking on the grass without your shoes on?

This is what the National Fire Ant Eradication Program is working to save. The program is the world’s largest biosecurity ant eradication program ever undertaken. Australia is also the only country currently focused on eradicating this pest. Fire ants have spread too far in other countries, and they have given up.

Our plan involves eradicating the fire ant infestation in South East Queensland with a rolling treatment strategy that starts from the west

in the Lockyer Valley food bowl and progressively moves east towards the Redlands Coast.

Plans are also in place to stop fire ants from spreading further including containing them around the fringe of the infestation, restricting human-assisted movement, and suppressing populations in areas awaiting eradication activities.

For our rural and semi-rural farming communities, as well as all who rely on the existence of these communities, fire ants pose a severe problem if left unchecked.

Fire ant expert and entomologist Dr Ross Wylie says that modelling shows the current incursion has grown slowly, in comparison to other countries.

“In recent years within South East Queensland, fire ants have spread at roughly 4 km per year. Fire ant spread in the United States is reported to be 50 km per year, and in China it’s 80 km per year. Australia’s efforts are showing a promising result when compared with countries where fire ants aren’t controlled.”

Had the eradication program not been in place, it’s estimated fire ants would have already spread as far north as Bowen, west to Longreach, and south to Canberra by now, causing destruction in their path.

If it weren’t so concerning, it’d be impressive the speed at which the pest can spread and how much damage they can do.

In the United States, fire ant mounds are part of the landscape. Texan farmers can only use 5–10% of their land. The rest has been taken over by fire ants to the point it’s beyond treatable and in many cases the land is unusable. Residents are also unable to walk to the washing line without being stung.

To give our country the best chance of success, properties within the planned treatment area need to be baited multiple times over several years.

For targeted properties, it means you might receive treatment from our teams up to four times per year, regardless of whether you see signs of fire ants or not.

Just one missed nest could be the difference between reinfestation and eradication, so it’s vital that every property in our eradication area is treated.

Fire ants are everyone’s responsibility, and we all play a part in getting rid of them. Let’s band together and protect the Australian way of life. Fire ants can be reported anytime by visiting the website fireants.org.au or calling 13 25 23

Nell cherished life, faith, and family

OVERmany years, the Scott family and the Philp family have entered St Stephen’s Anglican Church at Ma Ma Creek and have made a deep connection with this special place.

Nell Philp (nee Scott) began her Christian journey here as a very young child.

Nell was born on November 1, 1926 to Albert (known as Bert) and Audrey Scott.

They lived at Veradilla, near Grantham.

Nell had one older sister, Elsie (deceased), and two younger brothers, Albert (deceased) and Fred.

Nell was raised on the family farm, Wanstead, with her loving family.

Nell was bapti ed at Ma Ma Creek Anglican Church, as an infant, in the very font at the rear of the building.

er with her sister, Elsie, at St Alban’s Anglican Church in Gatton probably around the age of twelve years.

She attended the Grantham Scrub State School and was taught by Miss Mary Ford.

Nell’s sister, Elsie, once said Nell was always getting into trouble for talking.

Apparently, Nell was a good talker from an early age.

On a Thursday, Nell and Elsie would ride their horses to Ma Ma Creek State School where all girls learnt Domestic Science.

Nell loved horses and at the age of six, she started to compete in the Gatton Show horse riding events and won

many ribbons over the years.

Another love was milking the cows.

Nell and her brother Albert used to ride their horses to the local dances held at the Ma Ma Creek Hall where she met the love of her life, Don.

Don was often the Master of Ceremonies at these dances.

Nell and Don were engaged for one year before their marriage in the family church on December 3, 1949.

Twelve months prior to their marriage, Don bought a dairy farm at Redbank Creek, north of Gatton, and it was here they started a citrus orchard and named it Donnell Orchard.

After much hard work planting and tending the young citrus trees, Nell and Don created a beautiful oasis of trees with the orchard.

Together they worked it for approximately 40 years.

On several Sundays a year, 20 to 30 family and friends gathered at the orchard to help pick the oranges to Brisbane.

Nell was a hard worker and after spending Saturday in the shed grading and packing oranges, she would start preparing the vegetables for the big Sunday lunch.

This time working together cemented family relations and friendships.

These willing workers joyfully returned year after year sharing laughter and fun.

Oranges had to be delivered to roadside stalls in

Grantham and across the Lockyer Valley.

They eventually built their own roadside stall on the main Brisbane-Toowoomba Road where Nell sold their high-quality fruit whilst also looking after Kenneth who was two at the time.

Nell and Don were a wonderful example of successful teamwork in all that they achieved together.

They were blessed with two sons, Douglas and Kenneth who grew up on the orchard enjoying their farm animals and pony club days.

After they retired in 1984, Nell and Don moved to Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast where they enjoyed a relaxed life for four years.

Family ties were always strong so they returned to Gatton to be close to their family.

After Don died in 2010, Nell stayed on tending the garden and her beautiful pot plants with help from the family.

Nell and Don were lucky enough to travel around Australia and overseas with good friends.

They also loved a game of cards with friends and Nell still had an occasional game at Amaroo.

Nell moved into Amaroo in April 2021.

Nell developed a strong faith nurtured from her young days here in this church.

During her lifetime, Nell attended church services regularly and participated in

the many aspects of the life of the church.

The Reverend Jen Colbrams would regularly administer Holy Communion to Nell while she was still at her home when she was unable to attend church.

Nell was a special person with a positive attitude to life.

She was a loving wife, and a devoted mother and Gran, Great-Gran and Great-Great Gran.

She had many friendships lasting a lifetime.

Nell and Don were blessed with six grandchildren, Sonya, David, Amanda, Nicholle, Julian and Dominic, and six great grandchildren, Abbi, Kelsey, Demi, Bailey, Brayden and Riley and one great-great grandchild, baby Kaycee.

Nell had a wonderful life and she cherished everyone in her life.

Boost yield, soil health, and cut fertiliser use

A NEW way of using compost could boost global crop production and deliver huge ing to a study co-led by The University of Queensland (UQ).

Professor Susanne Schmidt from UQ’s School of Agriculture and Food Sciences said adopting a Precision Compost Strategy (PCS) in large-scale agriculture could health and divert biowaste erates harmful greenhouse gases.

“Instead of relying just involves supplementing the right type of compost with nutrients to match the needs Schmidt said.

“Soils that have become compacted and acidic are then aerated and neutralised.

“The result is they can

New number for fast access to Rural Aid

A NEW, dedicated phone line will allow farmers across the country to quickly and easily connect with the Rural Aid counselling team.

The direct line will ensure farmers are provided a faster and more trauma-informed response to their request for counselling.

Rural Aid’s counsellors are based across the country and offer free, to farmers and their families.

Rural Aid Manager of Mental Health and Wellbeing Lauren Stracey said the team will be able to prioritise and respond to calls more effectively with the new number.

“We know that it’s important to have a trained counsellor help

guide farmers through the period of reaching out for help,” Ms Stracey said.

“By initiating a dedicated 1300-line, farmers are able to access a trained counsellor who can support them with referrals for immediate needs, while getting a sense of their story and matching them with the most appropriate support.”

Rural Aid counsellors catch up with their farmers where they are most comfortable; whether on farm, in town, or over the phone.

The line is staffed by a Rural Aid counsellor between 9am and 5pm AEST, Monday to Friday. To get in touch with a Rural Aid counsellor, phone 1300 175 594.

THE 29TH Annual Moreton Classic Beef Show and Sale welcomed cattle enthusiasts to the Moreton Saleyards on Thursday October 13.

Among them were Faith Lutheran College Plainland’s year 10 agricultural science class, who brought a pen of three steers and two single heifers to the sale.

Head of learning committee for science, HPE and agriculture Emma O’Shea said the students’ visit to the sale was the culmination of the year’s learning experiences.

“They introduced the cattle to a feedlot back in February so they learned all the science about rumen digestion, managing animals onto a feedlot, disease control,” Mrs O’Shea said.

come to Moreton

Students were involved in tagging, vaccinating, stool analysis, weighing and monitoring cattle growth rates.

“From here the students can learn a lot more from the judges,” Mrs O’Shea said.

Fifteen-year-old Mitchell Lester said he was keen to see how the saleyards work.

“I’m hoping to get into the agriculture industry, I think it’s interesting,” he said.

For the past 26 years the sale has donated a portion of its sales to the Queensland Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Corporate partnerships leader Lydia Inglis said the RFDS relies heavily on donations.

“We really appreciate that, when you put aviation and medicine together it’s extremely expensive,” Mrs Inglis said.

“We’re one of the airlines that we don’t want to see you

on board, but we’re happy to be there for all Australians no matter where they live.

“No one is more than two hours away to be picked up in case of an emergency.”

“It’s great to be able to come

some of the people that have used our service who live in these communities out here.”

Thursday’s sale raised $13,709 for the RFDS.

Free workshop on ag issues

PRIMARY producers in Somerset are invited to a free workshop on issues facing the agricultural industry.

Somerset Regional Council (SRC) is hosting the workshop on Tuesday October 25 at the Kilcoy Golf Club at 5pm.

SRC Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the workshop would cover animal diseases, biosecurity preparedness, weed and pest control and an

changes.

The event, organised by council, is supported by the Local Economic Recovery Program and jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments and administered by QRA.

Mark Pitkin of LJ Hooker Esk leverages database to deliver outstanding result through off-market campaign

Mark Pitkin of LJ Hooker Esk works throughout the Somerset region. Mark has shown that premium results can be achieved off-market, through a low-risk strategy that offers complete flexibility to owners. When he was appointed to sell 28 Blue Gum Drive, Lowood, the brief was simple. His owners didn’t wish to go to the open market, however, they were happy to entertain offers.

Mark approached the sale of their property with the same level of tenacity

and commitment he applies to his on the market campaigns. He contacted all active buyers he had engaged with previously to drive engagement and generate inspections. The home, set on approximately one acre, was well appointed, offering a pool, entertaining area, upstairs parent’s retreat, fully fenced shed and workshop. It needed a few improvements, but it had excellent potential. Mark knew it would suit buyers wishing to add value in the future. Mark connected with them proactively about the

exclusive off-market buying opportunity, concluding a successful result in a very short period.

If you would like to work with an agent with a reputation for success, contact Mark Pitkin of LJ Hooker Esk for a confidential discussion.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

October 17-23, 2022

ARIES

On Monday and Tuesday you’ll feel creative and motivated, as the Sun and Mars activate your Aries mojo. But there’s the potential for explosive Sun-Pluto power struggles mid-week loved one). So calm down and try to communicate with extra care and diplomacy, otherwise you could overreact and do or say something you later regret! Strive to be uncharacteristically patient, as you make frustration your friend.

TAURUS

Mid-week looks eventful, as the Venus/Pluto square stirs up trouble. A double dose of diplomacy is required if you want to keep the peace. Then the focus is on friendships – how to nurture them, keep them … and then let them go if you have outgrown each other.

essential to long-term platonic relationships. the puzzle as you follow the path to your true destiny.

GEMINI

Your wonderfully witty side could blossom, as you brainstorm ideas and amaze others with your quick-witted quips and clever comments. But – if you are too hasty – then you could put

to a relationship issue, are you desperately for some resistance from others (especially a

You need to slow down and think things through.

CANCER

Pluto pushes your insecurity button, which could activate your protective Crab claws. But the more defensive you are (and the more resistant you are to change) the more exhaust-

will be. Try to get the balance right between maintaining the status quo (with things that are working) and changing the aspects of your life that aren’t functioning well. A close relationship certainly needs to be reviewed and renewed.

LEO

Mid-week, there’s a challenging connection between Pluto and the Sun. So try to avoid family squabbles, online arguments and runin charge, then resist the urge to be bossy and overbearing. Behaving like a demanding Diva will get you nowhere fast! Try to be extra patient …which is not one of your natural virtues. For some lucky Leos, Venus blesses a community project or a joint venture on the weekend.

VIRGO

Don’t be deterred by challenges. Hard work comes to work, a study project or a social media matter, you have the potential to achieve success, but it won’t come without plenty of elbow grease on your part. And avoid overreacting, Virgo! Criticising others (or blurting out recipe for trouble. Saturn encourages you to bite your tongue, sit tight, and bide your time.

LIBRA

This week Venus (your power planet) trines Mars and pairs up with the Sun, which favours

and long-term friendships. But negotiations will be tricky, and possessiveness and jealousy could rear their ugly heads. So slap on a diplomatic smile and share the love around. As Libran birthday great Carrie Fisher obnot the negotiation is easy is another thing.”

SCORPIO

The Sun and Venus are at odds with powerful Pluto (your patron planet) mid-week, which boosts your temperamental streak and your Scorpio control-freak tendencies. And you could feel like you’re stuck in a self-sabotagmore stubborn you are, the more challenging the week will be. Birthday great Tom Petty may

your options open and try to be much more

SAGITTARIUS

unrealistic about a project that’s due to be

proactive, get others on board and learn to and capitalise on your group connections, then you’ll eventually taste success. Communication is emphasised, so expect plenty of phone calls, texts, tweets and emails. But avoid getting drawn into an argument about

CAPRICORN

siting through your career zone, it will be easier to sort out workplace problems than at other times. Especially if you articulate your thoughts and are prepared to compromise. A stressed colleague is hoping you can provide some astute advice and a helping hand. Single Capricorns – love and work are linked in dynamic ways. The weekend is good for mental focus, long-term planning and clever problem-solving.

AQUARIUS

Are you making the most of your quirky Aquarall visiting your philosophy zone, you have the ability to affect others deeply with your controversial ideas, expansive views and progressive values. Education, foreign travel, social media and local community connections are also favoured. But beware the tendency to self-sabotage. The only person who’s likely to undermine your efforts this week is you!

PISCES

This week emotions are murky and still waters your mystery zone (and squaring Pluto) there’s more to everything than meets the eye. And it will take your Piscean perception – and substantial detective skills – to uncover secrets and distinguish fact from fantasy. Resist the urge to be drawn into playing power games with others. Mid-week favours sharing secrets, family functions and romantic rendezvous.

ARM WRESTLE IN LOCAL DERBY.

In the most keenly anticipated match of the new season, perennial Premiership winners, Laidley, faced off with competition newcomers, the Valley Vikings, for cricket bragging rights in the Lockyer Valley.

high quality match, with Laidley 7 for 214 after 82 intense overs.

The Vikings threw everything at Laidley, who batted with composure and resolve, with skipper Alex Welsh unbeaten on 57, supported by Mick Sippel on

Reisenlieter 2 for 70 off a marathon 26 overs.

Both sides brought their best game and could not gain the upper hand. The Day two run chase should be equally absorbing.

MULGOWIE OPENS A GRADE ACCOUNT

Helidon and Mulgowie met up in round 2 of the LCA A Grade competition playing on the new simturf wicket at Helidon. Mulgowie won the toss and bowled Ray McBride, returning to the game after a year out following a knee reconstruction top scored with 25 and Rylie Green-Smith was impressive for his 17. Wickets were shared around, Regan Jackwitz and Scott Davenport getting 1 each whilst Matt Taber snared 2 but as usual, the reliable and consistent Alex Emmerson led the way with 3 for 9 from 5 overs whilst David Williams bowled well to take 3 for 28.

With Helidon all out for 117 that was never going to be enough and Matt Taber and Scott Davenport opened up in the run chase. Matt made his inten-

laid the foundation early and well, Scott getting 32 and Matt 41 as Mulgowie passed the total in 20.3 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. That ensured them a bonus point win. Matt Green making his A Grade debut for Helidon was the best with the ball with 3 for 22 from 5 overs.

The game was played in great spirit and it looks like the Helidon simturf will produce some good games through the year.

McGuire and McGill are off to Mackay

LAIDLEY Bowls Club is proud to have Doug McGuire and Damien McGill representing them and the Downs district at the State Men’s Pairs competition held in Mackay next week.

McGuire and McGill take four rounds over Monday

McGill said it had been a good year for the pair.

“It’s pretty awesome to make it there, it’s the best

thing I’ve ever done in my career,” he said.

“We played the club the zone champions, we won that and now we’re off to Mackay.”

He was originally meant to play with his brother, Noah, but had to quickly replace him with McGuire.

“Doug said ‘I wasn’t even going to play this year’ and we went and won the thing,” McGill said.

“I rub it in Noah’s face sometimes.

“I’m one of those players where if I see a shot I just play it, but Doug goes ‘no, no’ and he keeps me on my feet.

“That’s why we won it, because we play so well together… I couldn’t have done it without him, that’s for sure.”

Hardcore bowls fan McGill is excited to represent Laidley and the

Downs in the competition, and to potentially feature in Queensland Bowler, a monthly magazine.

“I’ll be going around looking for some club badges, I try and collect those,” he said.

The Laidley Bowls Club holds barefoot bowls on a regular basis for the community, as well as private functions, parties, and weddings.
