Rail route not up for review

The Australian Government released their response to the Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee inquiry into the management of the Inland Rail project on December 16.

While the Senate supported some recommendations, it did not support the recommendation to review the track’s route.

“The Australian Government does not accept that further review

of the route or business case for Inland Rail is needed or would be an appropriate use of taxpayer dollars,” the Senate response read.

“In setting the Inland Rail route, the Australian Government has taken into careful consideration the findings of the many studies undertaken in 2006, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2020 to ensure that the route selected can meet business needs as defined by the Inland Rail Service Offering.”

The committee recommended ‘improved local government consultation,’ acknowledging initial engagements did not meet the expectations of landowners and the community.

“The Australian Government welcomes the fact that the ARTC, after hearing feedback from the community earlier this year is committed to carrying out broader and more meaningful community engagement,” the response read.

ARTC welcomed the Government’s response in a statement released on December 17.

“ARTC is proud to be delivering this nation-shaping infrastructure that is transforming how goods are moved around a country as big as ours,” it read.

“At the same time, we are very conscious there are impacts for some landowners and communities and that some stakeholders expected more from our early

engagement.

“We’ve continued to listen and build on these lessons as the project has progressed, while working closely with those impacted to better understand and minimise impacts where we can.

“We are committed to engaging with landowners, residents and other community stakeholders respectfully, sensitively and fairly, incorporating more local knowledge and building trust.”

The Australian Government has knocked back a recommendation to review the route of Inland Rail.

Planning continues for Warrego Highway intersection upgrades Planning is underway to upgrade Warrego Highway intersections at Mount Crosby Road and Haigslea-Amberley Road.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said planning was progressing on additional safety improvements.

“We have extended the scope of the Mount Crosby Road project to investigate variable speed limit signs and supporting infrastructure,” Mr Bailey said.

“Variable speed limit signs are an effective way to provide motorists with advanced warning to

reduce speed when there is queuing traffic from the Mount Crosby Road interchange off-ramps.”

Senator for Queensland Paul Scarr said the Mount Crosby Road interchange business case was a priority for the Australian Government.

“This upgrade is vital, due to the safety and congestion concerns at the interchange,” Senator Scarr said.

“We are now looking at options to deliver a Warrego Highway - Mount Crosby Road Interchange upgrade that meets com-

munity needs.”

State Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden community feedback helped to inform the project.

“It’s our priority to deliver a project that meets the needs of locals who use this road daily and have first hand experience with

congestion,” Mr Madden said.

“The feedback received during consultation reinforced the need for a substantial upgrade.”

Rosewood and surrounds free kerbside collection

Ipswich City Council’s free large item kerbside collection commenced this week.

Growth, Waste and Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Mayor Teresa Harding said council’s collection teams will be moving though each Ipswich suburb over the next 20 weeks passing about 86,603 households.

“This important collection service is kicking off in Rosewood and surrounds, ensuring residents are able to dispose of items that are too large for the wheelie bin,” Cr Harding said.

“I would encourage you to check the calendar on council’s website so you know when council will be coming to your suburb.”

Expect delays on Australia Day paper The Independent wish to advise there may be delays in delivery of the newspaper on Australia Day, Wednesday January 26.

Due to the public holiday, transport and logistics may be impacted on Wednesday morning.

We expect some venues to receive deliveries of The Independent as usual, however some deliveries may not be completed until the evening of January 26 or early morning on January 27.

Check In tech support in high demand Last week’s Check In help sessions at Ma Ma Creek Milk Bar were fully booked, highlighting the need for tech support in the area.

Lockyer Community Centre tech guru Corrie Verbeeten and manager Linda Roberts spent last Thursday helping people link their MyGov account

to the Check In app so they can show their ‘green tick’.

Ma Ma Creek Milk Bar owner Deb Wallis said she hoped helping people access and display their vaccination certificates will allow them to get out and about more, in turn helping the hospitality sector.

“The hospitality industry

is really getting caned, so anything we do here is going to benefit anywhere else they want to go as well,” she said.

Ms Roberts said anyone who needs help can contact the community centre for tech support or to print their certificates.

The centre is open

to hosting tech support sessions at other venues in remote areas of the Lockyer Valley.

The centre’s tech project is funded under the Lockyer Valley Regional Council community fund until midyear and the centre is seeking sponsors to keep the project running.

to Op shop thriving in new home When mask up

Esk Community Op-Shop has settled into their new home on Peter St and are thriving.

Since reopening last week, the shop has been inundated with donations and shoppers are frequently visiting their new location.

Esk Community Op-Shop president Jon Cunningham said they have been ‘hammered’ since opening last Monday.

“The volume of donations plus the volume of sales as well, both ways,” he said.

“People have been saving up [their donations] waiting for us to open,” Mr Cunningham said.

The op shop had to vacate their premises on Ipswich St in November last year.

The store was closed for eight weeks while the team of volunteers moved 250 boxes of stock to temporary storage, prepared the two sheds on Peter St, including painting the floors, and moved into the new buildings.

Esk Community Op-Shop volunteers have been hard at work to reopen at their new premises on Peter St.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s coming together,” Mr Cunningham said.

Across two sheds, they have gained 100m2 of floor space compared to their previous shop on the main street.

“The new owners here are

fantastic,” Mr Cunningham said.

He said they are well looked after by their new landlord, a builder from Brisbane who believes Esk is ‘the next big thing.’

Shop donates its proceeds to community groups, charities, clubs, individuals, and schools in the Somerset area.

Since opening in October 2020, they have given $72,361.15 back to the wider Esk community.

Mr Cunningham extended his thanks to the volunteers, shoppers, donors, and community members who contribute to the shop’s success.

“A big thank-you to everyone, the support we’ve got is phenomenal,” he said.

Toogoolawah Police are reminding the public that the requirement to wear facemasks while indoors is still in effect, including in shops, hospitality venues, and workplaces.

Exemptions apply in some circumstances, including indoors at a personal place of residence or temporary accommodation on a permanent or temporary basis.

Infants or children under 12 years are exempt.

You do not need to wear a mask while seated at a hospitality venue, or while eating or drinking.

Masks do not need to be worn while participating in strenuous sporting activity or exercise in an indoor space.

Exemptions apply to a person who has a physical or mental health illness or condition, or disability, which makes wearing a mask unsuitable; or communicating with those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

COVID-19 vaccines and booster clinics next week West Moreton residents can get their COVID-19 vaccination or booster at West Moreton Health hospitals in Boonah, Laidley and Esk this month.

The vaccination pop-up clinics at our rural hospitals will be held in late January, with residents aged 12 and over able to walk-in to receive their vaccination. Children

aged 12-16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Grants keep ag shows running

Show societies have kept the lights on and done vital upgrades with funding from the Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days program.

Gatton and Laidley Show Societies benefitted from last year’s round, which supported shows impacted by COVID-19.

ident Katherine Raymont said some of their grant money went toward revitalising the area between the grandstands and the show ring and additional power supply.

“In front of the grandstand the old concrete seats have been taken away, there’s wheelchair access from the carpark across to the meeting rooms… and there’s nice green grass they’ve put in and bitumen down the bot-

tom,” Ms Raymont said.

Power bollards and additional lighting were installed in the showground carpark and proved a vital benefit to the 2021 Gatton Show.

“The beauty is, we didn’t hire a generator for the show last year which is what we normally do,” Ms Raymont said.

grades out of their budgeted allocation.

Laidley Show Society president Dalray McCarthy said the society was forced to hold their events over multiple weekends when a lock-down coincided with their show weekend.

They received $15,000 which helped running costs.

“That helped us with our insurance, it helped us with work on the grounds,” Mrs

McCarthy said.

“We ran a lot of our events…at a later date, so that helped us with paying out prize monies and things like that.”

The ute show in early November was well attended and Mrs McCarthy said it would have been difficult to go ahead without the financial assistance.

“It would have been so hard,” she said.

“It’s electricity, power, water, rates, you name it, we’ve got to pay for it.”

The Laidley Show Society is planning for 2022 and are optimistic.

“We’re hoping that everything smooths down this year,” Mrs McCarthy said.

Applications under round two of the Supporting Agricultural Shows and Field Days program open on 28 January 2022.

Remembering Freda Lehmann Freda Joyce Lehmann was born at Oakey Hospital on September 3, 1934. She was the fourth daughter and eighth child of Emil and Sophia Blanck. The Blanck family lived at Rosalie Plains on a dairy farm.

Freda was baptised into God’s family and later confirmed her Christian faith at St John’s Lutheran Church at Kulpi. Freda and her siblings attended Rosalie Plains School and Kulpi School.

Freda was a keen horse rider in her younger years, riding 60 miles a week to school and confirmation lessons on her pony Spencer.

Emil and Sophia and four of their children moved to a small farm at Raceview, Ipswich in 1952. The Blanck family worshipped at St John’s Lutheran Church in Ipswich after moving to Raceview.

Freda worked as a nurse at Lyndhurst Private Hospital.

Whilst there, Keith Lehmann was admitted to hospital.

One day, when Freda was off duty, she offered to get anything Keith needed downtown and he requested some chocolate.

Keith was ever so grateful, thanking Freda and telling her that he’d dance at her wedding. Freda was a little embarrassed and asked him, “How do you know you’ll be at my wedding?”

Keith’s face broke into a huge smile as he told Freda “I’ll have to be, as I’ll be the man by your side.”

He was obviously very smitten with the lovely young nurse who cared for him while he was a patient at

Freda and Keith were married at St John’s Lutheran Church Ipswich on April 11, 1953. They lived on Keith’s parents’ farm at Prenzlau.

God blessed their marriage with eight children, Graeme, Stephen, Carolyn, Andrew, Marion, Daniel, Neville and

Jonathan.

Keith, Freda and their family worshipped regularly at Zion Lutheran Church Minden where their 8 children were baptised and confirmed.

Freda and Keith took over the Lehmann family farm when Keith’s parents retired.

Freda loved baking for her family and was a great cook.

She enjoyed playing tennis, sewing, knitting, embroidery, sketching and listening to music.

Freda was a keen tennis

player.

She was thrilled when Jarvis and Daisy West, who had a court with lights on, invited her and Keith to join their

tennis club at Coominya.

Freda and Keith were also members of the local Prenzlau Club.

Freda enjoyed listening to good music especially Hymns, Christmas Carols and Country and Western music.

Keith and Freda retired in the late 1990s, selling their farm to son Stephen and his wife Elaine and moving to Gatton.

They played euchre at Gatton golf club, Gatton View Hotel and the Senior Citizens Hall. Whilst playing cards they formed a special friendship with Ron and Cate Otto and they started playing at one another’s homes.

Keith and Freda worshipped at Peace Lutheran Church where Freda also joined their Ladies Guild.

Freda was a member of the Gatton CWA. Freda had a quiet and gentle disposition, and was a very loving, patient, and selfless person who always put others’ needs before her own. Her strong Christian faith gave her the strength and courage to endure many challenges throughout her life.

Freda enjoyed good health throughout most of her life until she was diagnosed with bowel cancer in August 2020.

Freda was promoted to glory late on Christmas Eve. Freda will be forever loved but so sadly missed by her family – husband Keith, Graeme and Judith, Stephen, Carolyn and David, Andrew and Heather, Marion and Robert, Daniel, Neville and Jan, Jonathon and Coral and their families.

Idell Wadley, Roy Angee, Gail Chalker, Jansi Rayalu, Sam Conway, (back), Roy Wheeler, Rob Wadley (front) are preparing to make Australia Day at the Gatton Hsitorical Village bigger than ever. This hand made quilt will be raffled to raise funds for the society.

Full afternoon of fun Australia Day at the Gatton and District Historical Society will look a little different this year, but it is going to be bigger than ever.

Gatton and District Historical Society president Rob Wadley said the celebration kicks off at 2pm instead of their usual morning event.

“This year we are running it in the afternoon,” he said.

The event is run by Spirit of the Valley Events Inc., and Mr Wadley said it will be bigger than previous years.

“This year will be three or four times bigger than we’ve ever had before,” he said.

Spirits of the Valley Events organiser Idell Wadley said there will be workshops,

entertainment, competitions, food trucks, and a twilight movie.

“We have local performer Dave Parsons, Solomon Islander Dance Troupe, Dave and Nicki from River 94.9, Aboriginal art workshop with Stephen Hogarth, and a basket weaving workshop with Jeanine Smith,” she said.

Sam Conway will be playing the digeridoo and giving a talk and encouraging the kids to get up for a dance workshop.

“The fun part for me is always doing dances and songs for the kids,” Mr Conway said.

Mrs Wadley encouraged everyone to nominate to

go in the Great Lamington Bake-Off. The best home-made lamington, junior and senior categories, will be judged in a blind taste test.

Others with a competitive streak can try their hand throwing a gumboot, thong, or paper aeroplane.

The kids will be entertained with a jumping castle, bungee run, and face painting.

Several food trucks will be serving up tasty goods to keep you fuelled throughout the afternoon.

For the history buffs, Gail Chalker said the historical society is holding a series of talks and an old photo

display.

“We’re going to start off with a bunch of unidentified photos that we have in our collection, and we hope people will come along and say ‘I know that bloke,’” Ms Chalker said.

This will be followed by talks on the Gatton Murders and the Queensland Police.

In the evening, a classic Australia film will be screened on the side of the shed.

Saturday’s Tradies Day set to delight The Lockyer Valley Turf Club are holding their annual Tradies Day this Saturday, with President Terry Kirkwood saying there will be plenty of food, celebrations, racing, and even rides for the kids.

“The day is sponsored by tradies and trade businesses in the area and we are expecting a big turnout, with the weather looking promising,” Mr Kirkwood said.

“We have just had sections of the club refurbished and on Saturday we will be officially opening up some new facilities including new rooms for the jockeys and a new box for the judges.

“There has been a big refresh of the place, so I am excited for people to see those improvements.

“There are six races scheduled for the day and they will be high quality races.”

Mr Kirkwood said that the annual Tradies Day does not adhere to the typical formal display of racing attire.

Fun for everyone at the Mulga There’s no better way to celebrate Australia Day than at a classic Aussie pub.

The Mulgowie Hotel’s Australia Day celebrations will have food, activities, entertainment, and lots of fun for the whole family.

Manager Sarah Crocker said visitors can enjoy a lunch of lamb and veggies, cooked in the smoker, which those who went to the Mulga’s recent 130th celebrations will remember.

“There will be lamington eating contest, your typical egg and spoon race, sack races for the kids,” Ms Crocker said.

Kids can re-enact Captain Cook on the pirate ship jumping castle.

There will also be a show and shine from a visiting car club.

Live music starts at midday.

“Billy Bridge is playing from 12-3 and lunch will go until 3 o’clock,” Ms Crocker said.

While it’s a great chance for the locals and their families to get together, Ms Crocker said everyone is welcome at the Mulga.

“Anyone is welcome, we open our doors to everyone,” she said.

Australia Day in the Somerset Australia Day activities in Somerset will take on a different look this year, with a family focussed celebration on the evening of 25 January, and official activities happening on Australia Day itself.

Councillor Sean Choat said Somerset Regional Council is holding an outdoor event on the eve of Australia Day. “While the Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremonies will be limited to awardees, participants and their families this year, we want to offer our residents a safe and fun way to enjoy Australia Day, and so Council is holding a public outdoor family event on the evening before,” he said.

“Somerset Celebrates will be an evening of entertainment and activities held outdoors in the grounds of the Somerset Civic Centre between 4pm and 8pm on Tuesday 25 January.”

Residents and their family and friends can enjoy rides, music, a choice of food options, face painting for the kids and a fireworks’ display later in the evening.

“Council is delighted to host Somerset Celebrates, an event that is proudly supported by the National Australia Day Council,” Cr Choat said.

Continuing the family fun on Wednesday January 26, all Council operated swimming pools will be offering free entry all day.

Shepherdson & Boyd’s new recruit

Shepherdson & Boyd have gained a handy new recruit this year, with Craig Bell saying he is excited to be working for such a prestigious saleyard.

“I’ve been an agent for nearly 27 years and a change in direction has led me to Shepherdson and Boyd, especially because they are more local,” Mr Bell said.

“They’ve got a very good name and they are old fashioned in some respects which is something that I like but they are also changing with the times too.

“Previously I was only auctioneering about once a month, so this has given me an opportunity to do it a couple of times a week, which is something I look forward to doing.”

Over the years, Mr Bell said he has had a lot of highlights, including selling some stellar cattle and coming second in the Queensland Young Auctioneers competition many years ago.

“It is always a highlight when you get up and you’ve got a very good line of cattle to sell, which they have in Toogoolawah,” he said.

Mr Bell said he is particularly looking forward to being involved in the weaner sale events held in May and June this year, where he expects between four to six thousand quality cattle.

Funding for flood affected farmers Extraordinary assistance grants of up to $50,000 for primary producers and up to $25,000 for small businesses hit by the recent floods are now available.

Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie said the activa-

tion of extraordinary grant assistance under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) was vital to help kick-start “These floods could not have come at a worse time, with many growers now unable to harvest their winter crops, while others have had to watch their early plantings

drown,” Minister McKenzie said.

“This DRFA assistance measure will provide grants of up to $50,000 to eligible primary producers in Banana, Bundaberg, Goondiwindi, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, South Burnett, Southern Downs, Toowoomba and the Western Downs.”

Players and coaches at Ballymore Cup 2021 as The Valley Rugby Union Club get ready to form an under 15’s side this year

Junior union team established The Valley Rugby Union Club will be fielding an under 15’s boys team in the Downs’ Teenage Rugby Union competition this year, with games to be played every Friday night.

Kent said they are on the lookout for boys wanting to join the team.

After seeing the difficulty parents had locating clubs, Mr Kent said he saw a need to form a locally based juniors club.

“In 2021 a few coaches and parents began talking about ways to get more young kids playing rugby outside of school and the idea of creating our own club was born,” Mr Kent said.

“It is a club that could be created in an image of our choice where the focus isn’t just on ‘footy’ but is instead built upon old school values like respect, selflessness and humility.

“There is plenty of

untapped potential and talent out here so if we can put together a team of young men from all over the Lockyer and Somerset region it will be a huge achievement.

“It will also, hopefully,

Lockyer Cricket Gatton Fordsdale v Ropehill A Grade 2 Day Match Gatton Fordsdale’s failure to take advantage of winning the toss and batting first saw them in early trouble at 2 /26 after 12 overs.

From there Kelsey O’Dea (94) and Kade Martin (39), went about rebuilding the innings.

Kade’s dismissal with the score at 3/103 after 48 overs left Ropehill on top, but a 90 run partnership between Kelsey and Lachlan Sticklen(38) swung the game Gatton’s way.

A flurry of runs in the last 10 overs saw the score climb to 5/253 at the close of play.

Ben Webster, one for 61 off 24 overs, and Chris Shirtcliff, two for 40 off 13 overs were the best with the ball for Ropehill.

Ropehill will bat next week.

Two day games can be two innings per team. A minimum of 75 overs must be bowled per day. If the team batting first isn’t dismissed at the end of day one a compulsory declaration must occur. Points are awarded for first innings win and outright wins. Playing hours are 12.45 to 6pm.

A2 Grade day/night match Mitch Teske (39) and David Kilah (30) helped Ropehill to get the score to 4/129, after winning the toss and batting.

Nathan Taylor (53) and Nathan Walsh (37) from 21 balls, produced a rapid boost to reach a great total of 4/192.

Gatton Fordsdale made a steady start to its run chase with Connor Kleidon (21) and Josh Raddatz (28).

When Raddatz was dismissed in the 26th over the score was 4/84, leaving the home side needing 108 off the final 84 balls so things were looking quite grim.

Callum Woolacott stepped up with 47 off 25 balls to get Gatton Fordsdale back into the game.

But this one was going down to the wire.

Needing three from the final ball Falak Patel (33) off 23 balls hit a six to win the game.

Best with the ball for Ropehill was Aaron Burgess 4 / 38 and Ben Litzow 1/8.

Gatton defeated Ropehill 8/196 vs 4 /192 There are 10 Day/Night games for the season at Cahill Park, starting at 3.30 pm and finishing approximately 9pm. 40 overs per side. Come to Cahill Park for an enjoyable evening’s cricket.

Rattlers ready for 1st season The Brisbane Valley Rattlers will field their very first seniors side this year in the upcoming AFL season and Club President Graham Smith is excited about their potential.

“We’re a club that’s only five years old and we put our first juniors on the paddock in 2017,” Mr Smith said.

With over 20 players already signed up, the club is still looking to sign more players.

“We’re open to players that have never played before,” Mr Smith said.

As for what a successful first season might look like,

Mr Smith said high participation, no forfeits and even a couple of wins would be nice.

Mr Smith said the club was still on the lookout for sponsorships for the side too.

“We’re a very family friendly club, we get the parents involved in any way we can and we’re always looking for volunteers to help out on game days.”

Playing and coaching the side will be Tyler Shorten, who Mr Smith described as an ‘absolute godsend.’

“He’s going to bring a lot of knowledge to the club and we’re really looking forward
