IN WHAT is generally regarded as the largest survey into rural and regional newspapers ever conducted, Deakin University handed down a report recently that makes for very interesting reading.

papers are not dead.

In fact, they are very much alive and well, especially in the country.

The survey found that print newspapers remain very much a part of the lives of those who live in rural and regional Australia.

Many respondents said they felt their local newspaper was performing a valuable community service.

They also class the stories in local newspapers as more detailed and trustworthy than online sources, and it is on this basis many respondents said

Good Luck with That I CONGRATULATE Care4Esk in “securing a substantial amount of funding” from the Federal Government to undertake a Koala Research project in Esk, as reported in a recent edition of The Lockyer & Somerset Independent.

Unfortunately, we have prior experience of Care4Esk as a reliable source when two identical letters from overseas correspondents protesting about the Glen Rock Adventure Park were published in two different newspapers, but with each a different author, and Care4Esk claimed they were authentic. It wasn’t even 1 April.

Furthermore, the members of Care4Esk displayed

they were happy to pay for their news.

The Deakin University study spoke to respondents from across Australia in all demographics, all adult age groups, male and female, to come up with these results.

to come out of this survey is that respondents feel so passionately about their local papers that policies

There are some things print does best, according to the survey. Funeral and death notices, public notices, and coverage of local and

buildings, and an attempt to gain entry to a sports shed.

This was the only crime of this nature over the holiday period.

Anyone who can identify to contact Gatton Police on 4631 6999

very little interest in Glen Rock before the adventure park project was announced, which leads to suspicion of green washing to conceal an acute case of NIMBY-ism.

There is already plenty of evidence of mountain biking co-existing quite happily with Koala Conservation at places like Daisy Hill Conservation Park and Hidden Vale Adventure Park.

I hope that in the interestsre4Esk will take cognizance of the real world research data that is already available from those two sources.

Mind you, if the intention is to use the ‘research project’ as part of their anti-Glen Rock Adventure Park campaigning, it stretches

state politics affecting the local area are best in print.

Politics was highly scrutinised as an important part of what we do.

Regional audiences overwhelmingly indicated that any additional funding should be directed towards employing more local journalists rather than digital connectivity and innovation products.

The onus was placed squarely on governments and their representatives at all levels to support local newspapers with advertising that gets right to the core market and not be swayed by the reach of digital advertising.

The more things change the more they stay the same because after this survey it is obvious the passion for print newspapers has not died, especially in the country.

credibility that any research undertaken by members of a group so virulently opposed to the Glen Rock Adventure Park project will be unbiased, so I’m not sure what they hope to achieve.

In their own words, “Sadly, these revved up mountain bike riders (about 90%) show little or no etiquette with regard to pedestrians inside or outside the bike trails - as they head to their “haven’’ for the adrenaline rush. No such haven for the walkers.” (Facebook, 20/05/2022).

It is perhaps ironic that on the same page in the newspaper there was also an article about mountain bikers assisting with the planting of 770 Koala hab-

itat trees at the site of the old Yimbun Station on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. Mountain bikers and Koalas have been co-existing very well in the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail corridor for several years.

Somerset Regional Council will be undertaking their own research into the environmental and cultural impact of the proposed adventure park, so the Care4Esk project seems like duplication.

We should all respect the outcome of the studies being undertaken by Somerset Council, which is what Care4Esk should be doing instead of wasting taxpayer’s money.

‘Please see us’: cyclists unsafe on Gatton roads

A GATTON couple are urging motorists to look twice for cyclists, and they experience.

Kirsten Sippel and Trent Bowers have both been struck by vehicles while they were cycling.

In August 2021, Mr Bowers was riding from his Laidley workplace when he was struck from behind on Gatton Laidley Rd. He was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with a brain injury, where he stayed for three months.

His recovery is ongoing.

In the setting sun, the driver did not see Mr Bowers on the shoulder of the road.

Mr Bowers and Ms Sippel want drivers to take the time to look twice for cyclists.

“There are cyclists on the

road and we’re allowed to be there, but please see us,” Ms Sippel said.

Street Smarts Queensland advises drivers to give cyclists 1m of space if travelling under 60kmph, or 1.5m when travelling over 60kmph.

Ms Sippel said the roads were not ideal for cyclists and ultimately she would like to see them improved to accommodate bikes.

“There are certainly more and more people who are cycling,” Ms Sippel said.

“I’d really love it if there were a bike lane that I didn’t have to be near cars at all.”

Until such bike lanes are installed, the cyclists are asking for their fellow road users’ respect.

“I know we’re small, but if you see us give us a bit of respect,” Mr Bowers said.

Road safety crack down on dangerous driving this Easter

POLICE were out in force across the state’s roads over the school holidays to crack down on dangerous driving.

Operation Victor Easter, QPS’s Easter road safety campaign, ran from April 1 to 16.

Queensland police issued drivers over the Easter long weekend, including 1,217 to speeding drivers, while 363 motorists were caught while of drugs or alcohol.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Chris Stream said police were pleased with driver behaviour but there were still many preventable incidents putting lives in danger.

“This is simply not acceptable – this is behaviour that puts their lives, their passengers and others in the community at risk.”

There were three drink from April 14 to 16.

The VMS will be used for a variety of messages, including incidents/hazards, community safety, disaster preparedness campaigns, regional information, and major events.

Community help for veterans support

The AUSTRALIAN Veteran Support Connect group in Lowood have received a helpful gesture of support from the community, with $1600 raised at a cent auction to increase mental health advocacy for veterans.

Orchestrated by the Lowood Craft Group, the cent auction comprised of prizes donated by the community and materials created by the crafts group.

Lowood Craft Group member Dawn Lange said the money raised was a true “90 per cent of what we had as prizes was donated from around the community,” she said.

“We also had home-made cards and crochet blankets for prizes that the crafts

group made.”

Ms Lange said the craft group were just returning the favour of support the veteran’s group had shown them.

“We were looking for a room to hire for our craft this one, and because they’ve been so good to us, we decid-

ed to raise money for them,” she said.

Veteran’s Advocacy Community of Practice chairman Peter Ryan said the group are here to support the veterans and Lowood community.

SOMERSET Regional Council has placed the Lowood Pool season extension under trial to decide whether it is viable for future years.

The pool’s season was extended from April 17 to May 15, with the pool’s usage, contractor viability and overall cost to be examined.

Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke encouraged the community to make the most of the trial.

“I encourage all Lowood Fernvale residents to hop in there and build those numbers up and use it in the way it should be used so we can actually budget funds against it in the future,” she said.

In 2014 an extension trial was conducted following the installation of electrical heat pumps, the results of which did not warrant an extension.

‘Surviving a bite is in your control’

THE COMMUNITY asked for it, and the snake experts delivered.

On Saturday night, April 15, Dr Christina Zdenek and Chris Hay visited Hatton Vale State School and presented Lockyer Valley residents with useful tips and tricks for what to do, and what not to do, when dealing with venomous snakes.

Dr Zdenek said the pair came from a science backthey approached the night. Discussions were based

primarily on red-bellied black and eastern brown snakes, both common to the Lockyer Valley and surrounds.

“As long as a snake is you want to treat them all the same,” Dr Zdenek said.

“The most dangerous snake is the one that just bit you, so you want to prevent that from happening.”

Mr Hay said snakes would do everything they can to avoid biting humans.

“If you want the thing gone, please consider using a snake catcher,” he said.

Break down taboos on military suicide

LAST year at Laidley’s Anzac Day service, Salvation Army Chaplain BJ Moulder spoke about suicide in the armed forces.

I had never heard suicide mentioned at an RSL service before and I was surprised as well as extremely pleased.

From 2001 to 2019, 1273 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel took their own lives.

Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide was tabled in Parliament on August 11, 2022.

Findings of the report include recognition of the unique nature of military service and its

impacts.

Data shows that the suicide of ex-service males is almost three times that of permanent defence personnel and ADF reserves, and 24% higher than the civilian male population.

Sadly, the female ex-service suicide rate is double that of civilian females.

Unfortunately, the suicide

rate of ex-service personnel who were discharged for medical or other reasons is much higher than those who completed their service time.

It could be concluded that issues arising before their discharge have led to such a high rate of suicide amongst those discharged before their completed time.

Every Anzac Day we rememmade by past and current service personnel. We should also remember those who died at their own hands.

When depression takes control of your mind, you think thoughts and do things that are not of your doing.

Taking your own life is not a conscious deliberate decision; the many varied stress factors in your life can allow depression to take total control of your life.

Chaplain Moulder commented that ‘raising community awareness and breaking down the taboo is one very important way to make progress in preventing suicide.’

Remember, it is not what goes wrong in your life that matters.

It is what you do about it that counts.

Teaching tolerance from island to valley

A RESPECTED Elder and community member, Milton Walit has always taught ‘think before you speak’.

Uncle Milton grew up on Thursday Island with nine brothers and learnt cultural traditions and protocols from the Aunties and Uncles. He came to Australia in the 1990s and has worked with the defence force and police service.

“It was wonderful and also adventurous… it was a big change,” he said. His role with QPS was in the Indigenous workforce group, helping bridge the divide between First Nations people and law enforcement.

“I was working as a public servant with the QPS and approaching our people,” he said.

This role in Ipswich was an ‘eye-opener’.

His approach was to teach patience and not speak out in anger, a principle he continues to live by.

“’Don’t get angry,’ I say,” he said.

“If I’m too quick to judge you instead of thinking what you’re saying to me, then I’ll retaliate back to you straight up, without thinking.

“Then you walk away going ‘oh I’m an idiot to say that’, too late!

“Your words are out there.”

Uncle Milton was awarded the Mayoral Award at this year’s Lockyer Valley Australia Day Ceremony, an acknowledgement of his contribution to the Lockyer Valley community.

He met with the Traditional Owners of the Lockyer Valley before moving to Laidley from Ipswich.

“The Elders know who you are, what your role is to become,” he said.

“Once an Elder said to me ‘hey, you’re from the sea, not from the land’.

“He said ‘don’t feel like you’re a stranger here, you’re quite welcome’.”

Although he retired in 2013, Uncle Milton has not stopped using the skills he learnt in public service to preach patience and understanding.

He now works with West Moreton and Darling Downs Health boards and the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Societal attitudes have changed in his lifetime, but he still witnesses racism.

“It’s still there, it’s still there, but it’s up to the individual,” he said.

“I can go up to you and see the hatred in your face and be humble and respectful.

“I will sit down with you, whether you like it or not, and make you realise that no no no no, we are the same.”

‘Fun Machine’ Saphire Blue T-Bucket

LOCKYER man and longtime avid Ford enthusiast his immaculate 1923 Ford T-Bucket for this week’s My Ride feature.

Keith said he had always wanted to get an open-top car as they don’t make anything like them anymore, so when he saw the T-Bucket for sale in 2017, he jumped at the opportunity.

“The previous owner had restored the T-Bucket, and the work done was outstanding in every way, from the motor to the body and suspension setup,” he said.

The T-Bucket was built with all Ford parts, the motor being a stroked 302 Cleveland with worked heads, a special grind cam to match and twin 680 Holley carbs sitting on top of a high-rise manifold.

The car’s motor was manufactured by Kostecki Engine Centre, Morley, WA, who are known for their involvement in building motors for the Australian V8 Supercars.

Keith said there was nothing like a ride in an opentop beast of a machine like

the T-Bucket with the wind whirling in your face.

After a couple of years of ownership, Keith said he made the hard decision to

sell the T-Bucket in 2019 to have funds for a race car he planned to compete with.

Keith admitted that he missed the vehicle the day it

left his possession. “I asked the new owner to let me know if they ever wanted to sell it to give me

he said.

“I got the call saying it was going up for sale as the then-owner was venturing into a property purchase, and

it took me less than one second to buy it back last year in 2022.”

Keith has raced cars for 54 years, from go-karts to sports sedans, and said this year would probably be his last.

“The T-Bucket will be my fun car, it always puts a smile on adults’ and kids’ faces at car shows, and anywhere they spot it,” he said.

Keith used the T-Bucket last year for a formal school ride, photo shoots, and a dying man’s last wish to ride in a T-Bucket.

Keith has won a couple of trophies and hopes there will be more in the future while he and his family enjoy the T-Bucket for years to come.

“[The Swifts] just managed to get over the line when we couldn’t get over the line,”

Brandley said.

Brandley is still optimistic for the season, after a good preseason, fair trial matches and a 10 player sideline.

“We’ve got a lot of young fellas in there, some of them aren’t even 18 yet,” he said.

“We’ve got to start juggling from week to week to

them.

“It’s just ball possession, we were turning it over when we shouldn’t be turning it over.”

Brandley said there were some champions on the team.

“If we keep them together for a couple of consecutive

seasons it will make a mas-

Brothers Joel (31 years), Conor (22) and Cody (20) Adams have a long history with the club, but are playing 2023.

“Individually, Joel’s been playing for 12 years, I’ve

been playing for 12, Conor’s been playing for 8,” Cody said.

“It’s good, I’ve got some big guardian angels hanging over me.

and when we want to be there and holding the ball.”

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER FOR THE BVSC’S OVER 40S TEAM

THE SENIOR members of Brisbane Valley Soccer Club are optimistic for the new Over 40s team’s chances in the Queensland Christian Soccer Association 2023 season.

The team comprises former Over 30s players, parents and grandparents to younger club members, some new talent, and is supported by an all-female managing-coaching team.

The team tied 2-2 in their April 14 against Whitehall

Over 40s coach Hannah Johnston is also the wife to a player.

“I normally just bring the cheeseboard and sit on the line, but I come to every game and every training,” Johnston said.

“I YouTubed drills and stalked the other teams and watched them because I had no idea what to do, but I’m really liking it.

“They used to just come in and kick the ball at the net, but now we’re actually running drills.”

Johnston said she hoped the team would make it to the premiership.

“We have a goal, and I want to hold that trophy at the end,” she said.

Similarly, team manager Melissa Snell is married to a player, with a son and

daughter competing in junior competitions too.

“One of our players is going to change his holidays in anticipation that we’re Snell said.

“I feel like that’s some good enthusiasm.”

Member of 26 years Allan Warren said he was less optimistic, but still excited for the season.

“We’ll do okay if we can keep our numbers… in a normal season you’ll start

in you’re struggling to put a injuries,” Warren said.

“We just don’t heal like we used to.”
