Roadworks at Fairway Dr to improve safety

A notorious intersection on the Warrego Highway will see significant safety improvements when road works start this month.

The Fairway Drive intersection at Hatton Vale will see a longer acceleration lane for merging traffic and an added deceleration lane.

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said the work solves two of the biggest problems: fast lane traffic turning right into Fairway Drive off the highway, and exiting Fairway Drive onto the Warrego.

“It’s really welcome that funding has finally been provided to see the deceleration lane from the east and the acceleration lane from the west improved.” Mr McDonald said.

“We really ramped up the fight after a fatal crash in

“While there are other works that need to be done at the intersection, this is a great start in future proofing and improving the safety for those coming home from work.”

“This safety improvement is really welcome but we’ll keep fighting for other safety improvements to minimise the danger for our community,” he said.

Road safety: consider driving behaviour every day How often do you think about your driving behaviour?

That’s the message police want the public to consider this week during Queensland Road Safety Week.

Laidley Police Station Acting Officer in Charge Sergeant Dan Curtin said it

is important for motorists to think about their driving behaviour every day.

“Poor driving decisions lead to tragic outcomes and loss of life,” he said.

“Laidley Police want people to take notice of how Fatal Traffic incidents affect families, loved ones and friends of those involved.”

Two sections of road in the Laidley region are responsible for nearly half the road fatalities in the region over the last decade.

The Hatton Vale section of the Warrego Highway and Forest Hill Fernvale Road, Glenore Grove have seen 14 out of 29 road fatalities in ten years.

“These roads are heavily targeted by local police with traffic enforcement but this will be a particular focus of Laidley Police for Queensland Road Safety Week 16-20 of August 2021 as we look to educate drivers and increase overall road safety for members of the community using these

roads,” Sgt Curtin said.

This year to August 8, there have been 171 fatalities as a result of crashes on Queensland Roads.

Police will be targeting the Fatal Five (speeding, drugs/alcohol, fatigue, seatbelts, distraction) during Queensland Road Safety Week to increase public

awareness and increase driver education.

“It is particularly important during this upcoming week for motorists think about how their driving behaviours, each and every day, no matter how small, can contribute to the overall safety of the community,” Sgt Curtin said.

“For every $100 spent at local small businesses, $ 68 returns to the community.”

Share the Dignity gives women the essentials

Share the Dignity drive is on for the rest of the month and local businesses are on board.

Gatton Plaza Discount Drug Store, It’s Cuts Curls and Colours hairdresser in Gatton, Withcott Martial Arts Inc and Woolworths stores are collecting donations of pads, tampons and menstrual products this month.

According to the Period Pride survey conducted by the charity, a significant number of Queenslanders are resorting to using toilet paper or other unsuitable alternatives to manage their period.

With the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail increasing in popularity, expressions of interest are open to join the steering committee and have a say in its future development.

The proposed committee will include four volunteer positions for community members and representatives from local councils and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the rail trail is a fantastic outdoor recreational experience for locals and visitors alike “I would encourage all interested community minded individuals to consider nominating and be a part of the ongoing success of Australia’s greatest rail trail,” Cr Lehmann said.

Council installed counters in Fernvale and Esk in 2019 and more recently one in Lowood.

Quarterly figures released last Wednesday show the number of users increasing year on year.

Fernvale continues to have the highest use with over 16,000 users enjoying the trail in the last quarter.

Parliament looks into affects of isolation

Somerset Regional Council has responded to the state government’s call to address social isolation and loneliness in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for Communities Leeanne Enoch said COVID-19 had a big impact on Queenslanders, particularly vulnerable people who are at the biggest risk of social isolation and loneliness.

“In 2020, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that the personal stressor most experienced by Australians during the COVID-19 pandemic was loneliness,” Minister Enoch said.

A Somerset Regional Council spokesperson said local councils are best placed to understand the needs of their communities.

“It is important for Somerset Council to have a voice in this request for submissions, as we have the largest Council area, with a population of just over half that of Lockyer Valley and the Scenic Rim, nestled in between the large

metropolitan areas of South East Queensland,” the spokesperson said.

“This geography results in a dispersed population, which intrinsically increases the risk of social isolation.”

The report investigated social isolation among seniors, youth, young families, persons with a disability, and farmers.

“Social isolation is present within a number of cohorts and can be related to a lack of opportunity to socialise or other inhibiting factors.

“Over a period of time, isolation can lead to loneliness, which can have major impacts on a person’s health, mental health, confidence and capacity to lead fulfilling lives.”

Lack of public transport is a factor in people’s ability to socialise or participate in community activities.

“Council is very aware of the issues which lack of public transport cause for the community, but is also cognisant that the relatively

small and distributed population makes the viability of public transport difficult,” the council spokesperson said.

“The report highlights the difficulties faced by the community when lack of transport prevents inclusion.”

The Parliamentary Inquiry will consider the drivers and impacts of, and effective responses to, social isolation and loneliness in Queensland communities.

Minister Enoch said that across the world there had been recogni-

tion of the issue of social isolation and loneliness.

“We know that social isolation and loneliness have a significant impact on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of many people,” she said.

“Everyone has a role to play in addressing social isolation and loneliness, including communities, governments, service providers and businesses, which is why we are providing opportunities for Queenslanders to provide input to this Parliament Inquiry.”

NO FINES IN LOWOOD LOCKDOWN

Police are commending the Lowood community for their compliance during the recent lockdown restrictions.

Lowood Police Station officer in charge Senior Sgt James Bromley said officers were actively performing COVID-19 compliance activities during the eight day lockdown.

“They performed 94 vehicle intercepts in Fernvale and Lowood areas to ensure that members of our community were travelling for essential purposes only,” Snr Sgt Bromley said.

“We were extremely happy with how the community were complying with the lockdown restrictions and travelling only for essential purposes.”

Snr Sgt Bromley said everyone was compliant with wearing masks and police were not required to hand out any masks in the Lowood division.

“We are extremely happy to report that Lowood Police were not required to issue any infringement notices for noncompliance of the lockdown restrictions,” he said.

“We would like to thank the community for their contribution in keeping our community safe.”

Mobile COVID-19 clinic bringing vaccines to Somerset

Somerset residents will have improved access to COVID-19 vaccines when West Moreton Health brings a mobile clinic to Esk at the end of the month.

The temporary clinic will be at the Somerset Civic Centre from August 31 to September 4 to provide the vaccine to residents over 16 years old.

Somerset Regional Council

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the additional facility will add to the services already provided by the local pharmacies and medical centres.

“As a council we are very excited that Somerset Region residents will be given the opportunity to have their Pfizer vaccination in the coming weeks,” he said.

“It is hoped that by opening the Esk clinic we can get as many Somerset residents vaccinated as possible.

“We want to help stop the spread of this nasty virus and help prevent future lockdowns which impact us enormously.”

In areas with reduced primary care provision, such as Esk, vaccines will be offered

to everyone over the age of 16 in line with Queensland’s whole-of-community vaccination approach for remote communities.

“I would personally like to thank West Moreton Health for their assistance in getting the clinic off the ground, as a community we are grateful to them and all those that work in

the health care sector.”

Bookings are strongly recommended and proof of Somerset residency is required.

Each day of clinic operation, only the required amount of vaccine will be transported to the location, limiting capacity for walk-ins.

Bookings can be made by emailing the Esk temporary

mobile vaccination clinic on WM-EskCOVIDvaccination@ health.qld.gov.au, by phoning 134 COVID (134 268) or visiting the Somerset Region Library branches.

Second doses will be available when the clinic returns to Esk in coming months.

Energy networks recruiting

Some of Australia’s most in-demand apprenticeships are up for grabs with publicly owned electricity distributors Energex and Ergon Energy opening applications for their 2022 intake.

Recruitment has kicked

off for 116 roles, including electrotechnology electricians, distribution linespersons, mechanical fitters, and communication techs.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said the Class of 2022 will start their training in February, joining 460 apprentices already learning

the ropes with Ergon and Energex.

“Because Queensland’s economic recovery is well underway, we need even more Queenslanders on the frontline maintaining our energy assets,” Mr de Brenni said.

“One of the great strengths

of our publicly-owned network is that our government invests in the skills our communities need for a safe and reliable power supply.

“That creates decent, secure jobs for young Queenslanders.”

Electrical Trades Union (ETU) State Secretary Peter

Ong is encouraging anyone interested in the electrical trade to apply for an apprenticeship.

“We’re facing a huge change in our industry here in Queensland and all over the world, looking to transition to renewables in the future, and these apprentices will get the

opportunity to train and get qualified with this transition at the forefront,” he said.

Forty percent of the roles will be based at Energex sites in South East Queensland, while the remaining seventy positions will be available at Ergon depots in regional areas of the state.

Withcott State School to receive bicycle training The Queensland Government is allocating almost $500,000 to be shared among 55 grassroots education initiatives aimed at saving lives and reducing trauma on Queensland roads.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said this year’s Community Road Safety Grants would be rolled out across the state over the next 12 months.

“This year’s grants support

55 community-based groups to deliver effective road safety education and awareness initiatives, encouraging safer practices,” Mr Bailey said.

Within the grants, $87,000 has been designated for primary school children’s practical bicycle and road safety education, and Withcott State School is among those selected.

Tennant, said there will be approximately 30 year four students involved in the road safety training.

“Students will travel to Toowoomba for the Cycle Safety program, which contains a simulated road system complete with proper signs, a roundabout, pedestrian crossing and traffic lights,” she said.

The training is scheduled to take place in November.

Scouts funding boost

The Gatton Scout Group have a boost to productivity, thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s Volunteer Grants Program.

Scouts Queensland District Commissioner for Atkinson, Karen Nawratzki welcomed the funding boost from the federal government.

“We are a small, tight-knit community focused organisation so any and all support is very welcome,” Mrs Nawratzki said.

“We were able to buy a new laptop and pay for some training, which due to COVID-19 had sadly been delayed.

“Our Gatton Scouts team has battled on through COVID and we are making the most of the environment we’re in.”

Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz recently visited the Scout den and met with local Scout leaders, including Mrs Nawratzki and Frances Thompson to see how the Gatton Group had benefited from the funding.

Gatton Scouts received a grant from the federal government for a new laptop and training.

“We make the grants available to ease the financial burden on volunteers and to ensure community groups, such as the Gatton Scouts can buy small equipment for volunteers to make their work easier,” Mr Buchholz said.

“Gatton Scouts received $2,950 and purchased a laptop and software to help

with management and organisation of scouting functions and events,” Mr Buchholz said.

“Funding between $1,000 and $5,000 was available under the 2019-20 volunteer grants to help community organisations and to support the work of our local volunteers.”

Somerset groups successful with grants Five Somerset community groups have been successful in the latest round of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund grants.

The successful groups included the Kilcoy District Football Club, Mt Stanley Muster Inc, Hazeldean Rural Fire Brigade, Anglican Parish of Kilcoy and the Toogoolawah and District Progress Association.

Member for Nanango, Deb Frecklington, congratulated the groupsand said nearly $120,000 will be shared.

“I would like to congratulate these hard-working clubs and the volunteers who put their time into securing these worthwhile projects that will greatly benefit our community,” she said.

“I encourage all local groups, however big or small, to consider applying.”

Kilcoy District Football Club Treasurer Pat Bleakley said the funds will go to a new scoreboard and time clock for their juniors.

“It helps us get everything we need and to get up and running for next season,” she said.

Toogoolawah and District Progress Association Secretary Helen Brieschke said the funds have helped secure a much-needed portable canteen.

“These funds have gone towards our Christmas Tree subcommittee who raise money all year round through their canteen operations,” she said.

“The money raised goes towards Toogoolawah’s Christmas Tree and the canteen was in desperate need of an upgrade.”

The next round is now open, applications close on August 30.

Flood plans for Moore and Linville Linville and Moore residents are encouraged to provide their input on new flood studies for the towns.

Somerset Local Disaster Management Committee Chair Mayor Graeme Lehmann said these new local town flood studies will improve understanding of floods in Linville and Moore, particularly with the increasing development interest and property sales in these two towns.

“I invite the community to attend Linville Hall on 30 August 2021 between 4pm and 6pm to find out more about the new flood studies and to provide input into the studies,” Cr Lehmann said.

“We will have technical people available on the day to discuss the flood studies and new mapping.”

Lockyer council COVID support

Food businesses will have an extension to the end of September to pay licence renewals as part of Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s COVID-19 relief.

Finance portfolio councillor Chris Wilson said the extension was one of several financial measure which total more than $865,000 to date.

“Since this pandemic began, Council has passed a Hardship Policy to assist ratepayers suffering financial difficulty, as well as a range of financial relief and economic support measures to provide immediate and medium-term support to the Lockyer Valley community and business owners impacted by the

coronavirus pandemic,” Cr Wilson said.

“Council adopted a rate freeze in the 2020/21 Budget, as well as a freeze of utility (waste collection and waste management) charges and extended the due date for licence renewals for food business to 30 September 2021.

“Council staff worked closely with businesses, social enterprises, community groups, and sporting clubs impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to assist them with accessing information on available Federal and State Government Stimulus packages.

The flood studies were commissioned Somerset Regional Council in partnership with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority and state and federal governments.

Arts funding for region Regional arts will get a $4.38 million investment this financial year through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the state government is investing $2.08 million through RADF in 2021-22, matched with a contribution of approximately $2.3 million from 59 councils across the state.

“RADF is a great example of working together to deliver our COVID-19 economic recovery plan, supporting employment opportunities and creating new arts and cultural

experiences in local and regional communities,” Minister Enoch said.

Across the Lockyer Valley and Somerset, RADF grants have supported local artists in music, dance, film, visual arts, performing arts and history.

Ned & Gwen reach Platinum

The Taylors have spent their 70 year marriage in the Lockyer Valley.

Edmund “Ned” and Gwendoline “Gwen” celebrate their platinum anniversary next week.

Ned grew up on the family farm at Fordsdale with one brother. “Ned farmed all his life up at Fordsdale,” Gwen said.

“They say good things lived at Fordsdale,” Ned said.

The Taylor farm had dairy cattle, beef cattle, and pumpkins.

“Up Gatton-Clifton Rd in the early days every place had a dairy, and there’s not one anymore,” Gwen said.

He went to Fordsdale school and when he started high school he rode his bike into Gatton.

When Ned’s brother joined the army, Ned stayed to help his father on the farm.

“He had to do away with school and be a farmer, but he’s done all sorts of things,” Gwen said.

Ned was the chairman of the Mt Sibley Dairy Association and was a foundation member of the Fordsdale Fire Brigade and received several medals for his service.

After eight months of teaching at Mitchell, she was posted to Fordsdale and appointed head teacher in 1947.

Ned heard that the new teacher was coming and first saw Gwen at the Grantham station.

“He saw me but I didn’t notice him,” Gwen said.

“The mailman picked me up and we got the mail and the first stop we had was Ma Ma Creek shop and [Ned] was there when I got there.

“The Ma Ma Creek teacher came across and welcomed me to the area, then on we went to the next place which was Mt Whitestone.

“And he was there again.

“We kept going to Fordsdale and the mailman let me off at this house.

“And it was Ned’s house.”

Ned’s mother was a pupil teacher who boarded new teachers to Fordsdale school.

At the one teacher school Gwen was allowed use of the Fordsdale community

hall where she played the piano and the students put on concerts.

“We had an old lady up there, and that was the only day she went out each year was for the kids’ picnic,” Gwen said.

Ned and Gwen were married at St Matthews Anglican Church, Dinmore on August 25, 1951.

Gwen hand-made her own wedding dress, it cost $25, and her mother tatted her lace veil.

As was required at the time, Gwen retired from teaching when they got married.

However, it was only a month or so before she received a call from Gatton school who needed teachers.

“I was only there for about a week and I came home one day and I thought I can’t do this, I just can’t do this,” Gwen said.

The change from a one teacher school to a class of

40 second grade students was a drastic change.

She was swayed by a visit from the inspector, who encouraged her to stick it out for two more weeks and ‘everything would click into place.’

Gwen taught at Gatton State School from 1967 until 1988.

They had five children, Russell, Jennifer, Sandra, Robyn and Stephen who was sadly stillborn.

A keen gardener, the grounds of their Fordsdale farm house was Gwen’s pride and joy, winning her numerous awards in The Chronicle and Gatton Council garden competitions.

The Taylors were involved in the Fordsdale School of Arts, the Ma Ma Creek Exhibition, and been active members of St Stephens Church.

Ned and Gwen sold the Fordsdale farm in 2016 and live on the Pollock family farm next to their daughter and son-in-law.

A highlight of their lives was the combined 90th birthday party their family organised for them in 2017.

Over 70 years of marriage, working on a farm and raising children, the number one thing they’ve learned from each other is patience.

State and Federal Governments jointly funded upgrades to driver rest stops in Queensland.

Upgrades to driver rest areas Driver rest areas on major road corridors across South East Queensland have been upgraded to help improve road safety for motorists.

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said the facilities were important for all motorists, particularly those on long road trips and for heavy vehicle drivers rest stops were part of the workplace.

“These upgrades are going to provide better rest stops and increase capacity to encourage road users to stop, revive and survive,” Mr

Buchholz said.

“We know managing fatigue helps reduce the risk of crashes on our roads.”

The Gatton Bypass Truck Stop rest area received a $479.993 face lift with improved pedestrian access and general improvement works.

Queensland Assistant Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said the upgrades included two heavy vehicle rest areas.

“Heavy vehicle rest areas at Warrill View on Cunningham Highway, and Palen Creek on Mount Lindesay Highway, have been regraded and

sealed to improve the entry and exits,” Mr Saunders said.

“The crew also completed minor road repairs at Warrill View.”

The upgraded area upgrades are part of a $15.825 million state-wide road safety mass action project, funded by the Australian and Queensland governments on an 80:20 basis. The funding supports the fast roll-out of life-saving safety works on rural and regional roads, with the funding offered to states and territories on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis in six-month tranches to ensure rapid delivery.

Lowood Cycling Classic turns 20 The Somerset Regional Council has approved the 20th Annual Lifecycle Cycling Classic, a 35km cycling event set to take place on the last Sunday of August around Lowood.

Economic Development and Tourism Committee representative Bob Whalley was pleased with the successful application and is excited about the event.

“The Cycling Classic has been run for 19 years in the Somerset Region and

we anticipate another successful milestone event,” he said.

This year’s event will also involve a new course, which will run from Lowood to Coominya and back via Mount Tarampa, avoiding the Brisbane Valley Highway.

“The inclusion of Coominya in the route will give supporters additional locations to cheer on the riders,” Cr Whalley said.

“After the success of the Rail Trail Fun Run,

I’m sure this event will be equally popular for cycling enthusiasts.”

Past events have attracted 300 competitors and hundreds of supporters from around SouthEast Queensland to the Somerset Region.

Entries to partake in the classic close this coming Sunday and event organisers have promised that should the race be cancelled due to COVID, all entry fees will be refunded.

Grandchester steams ahead

A fleet of miniature trains has chugged along in Grandchester for nearly 30 years.

The Grandchester Model Live Steam Association celebrated 27 years this month.

Foundation member Peter McGovern said they celebrate their August birthday to mark when the club found its home grounds in Grandchester in 1998.

“From 1994 until 1998 we never had a home ground,” he said.

“We opened here for public running on the 1st of August 1998, so that’s when we celebrate our birthday, when we had a home.”

With 1500m of laid track and a 750m round course, the course at Grandchester is a playground for electric, diesel and steam powered locomotives.

Many members are drawn to the club by their passion for trains, but engineers and model builders also get a kick out of building their own ‘locos’.

“It’s as much a model engineering hobby as it is a train hobby,” Mr McGovern said.

“When we started here it was mainly train enthusiasts.”

The miniature trains are built as exact replicas of real trains, varying from a 1:6 to 1:8 scale, including the

Sundowner and classic QR trains and even some steam engines.

With Grandchester’s rich rail history, the club incorporates some of the region’s rail past at their home grounds.

Some of the structures on the site have historical significance to the locomotive industry in south east Queensland.

An old signal cabin now serves as a club house housing historical artefacts, the station shelter used to cover an A10 locomotive in Ipswich, and the red arches of the main bridge are from Central Station in Brisbane.

As part of an Australian network of clubs, Grandchester has played host to affiliated live model steamers from across the state, country, and internationally.

“We do a weekend in May called the All Queensland where it’s for Queensland locos and every August we do our birthday run,” Mr McGovern said.

“And for those runs, up until pre-COVID, we used to get people from all over Australia.

“We’ve had them from South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, far north Queensland and we have regulars from Queensland.”

Clubs from New Zealand and the United States have visited the track.

Young Citizen Mayor for a day

BY GRACE CRICHTON A promising young citizen of the Lockyer Valley was given the opportunity to see council from the inside.

Cameron Maizey, recipient of the 2021 Young Citizen of the Year, was given the chance to spend a day with Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan.

His volunteerism and community involvement earned him the award on Australia Day and the chance to shadow the mayor.

“I did a lot of work with the local RSL in Helidon,” Cameron said.

“I’ve played the Last Post for them for them for a fair few years now.”

His work at the Gatton Soup Kitchen also contributed to his recognition for the award.

“I help a lot at the soup kitchen here, serving for the

backpackers,” he said.

“It’s fun, they come every Monday night for a free meal.”

During his day with Cr Milligan on July 29, Cameron sat in on meetings and radio talks.

Expecting a more formal setting, like State Parliament, Cameron was surprised see a more relaxed environment.

“It’s a lot nicer than I imaged,” he said.

“There were more meetings than I thought.”

The Toowoomba State High School student enjoys cricket, volleyball and music.

The Grade 8 student is keeping future study and career options open.

His favourite part of the day was a discussion with Cr Michael Hagan and Cr Milligan learning some of the workings of local government.

Can’t keep a good pub down

For a pub that’s stood for 130 years, it will take more than a lockdown to get its spirit down.

The Mulgowie Hotel planned to celebrate its birthday this weekend but has rescheduled for September 4.

It will be a lively day in Mulgowie, with the Mulgowie Gift and markets also taking place on Saturday.

Manager Sarah Crocker said the milestone event is a testament to the Mulgowie community.

“It’s almost overwhelming to be a part of something that’s celebrating 130 years,” she said.

“That in itself is just goes to show how much community spirit is required, and is

“It’s changed names, it’s changed hands, it’s had flood waters lapping at it’s doors.”

But despite flood, drought, and now pandemic, the crew at ‘The Mulga’ are charging

“We’ve grown it so much in the last 12 months,” Ms Crocker said.

They’ve gone from serving up 25 to 30 meals on a busy night to 60+ meals now.

“So in my eyes it’s a huge turn around.”

A popular spot with locals and visitors alike, the pub sees car and bike clubs descend in droves on the weekend and there’s a common

question on their minds.

“We get asked so often, is this the original building?”

Ms Crocker said.

And with the exception of a few renovations, it is.

“Obviously it’s had a few

face lifts along the way, but when you look at the exterior and you look at those photos, you can tell it’s the original Burnside Pub. “It’s got some history to it, there are a lot of stories these walls could tell, and I wish they could.”

One of the best stories she’s heard is from recent history, when floods overtook the valley.

“The pub was just packed with tractors, because that’s the only way you could get to the pub,” Ms Crocker said.

“There was just a line of them outside.

“The pub was still open, the beer was still flowing, but not a car in sight, just tractor after tractor.

“I think that’s just sensational.”

Dangerous weed causing concern

Somerset Regional Council has set their sights on raising awareness on the growing problems fireweed is creating across the region.

Councillor Sean Choat has suggested a bulk mail out to raise awareness of the potentially dangerous weed.

“We’ve had an influx of new people come into the region and I just don’t know ... if people realise how bad a pest fireweed is,” Cr Choat said.

“If you have continued exposure by pulling it out

without a glove, it could go into your system and it cause problems with your major organs or also with farmers livestock.

“Cattle and horses are par-

ticularly susceptible.”

Somerset Council is offering rebates to farmers and landowners to treat fireweed on their properties.

“Everyone in the region has a responsibility, we just need to create awareness and I am confident the vast majority of people want to do the right thing,” Cr Choat said.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said advances in chemical treatments that kill the seeds of fireweed look promising.

“They’re not conclusive just yet but I feel pretty confident about these new chemical treatments,” Cr Lehmann said.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) have issued a biosecurity alert after American serpentine leafminer (Liriomyza trifolii) was detected in northern Queensland and the Torres Strait.

American serpentine leafminer poses a significant threat to Australia’s agriculture and nursery industry as it affects a wide host range of common horticultural crops and ornamental plant species.

Although not currently widely established in Australia, there have been multiple detections in Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area of Cape York, and in Kununurra

in WA and Katherine in the NT. They have been found to seriously affect solanaceous crops (potato, tomato and eggplant), as well as crops in the Asteraceae, Cucurbitaceae and Fabaceae families.

DAF is working with governments, industry groups and communities, to assess the likely impact of the pest.

Industry and the general public are strongly encouraged to report suspect detections of American serpentine leafminer to the national Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881 or to Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.

Quartermaster tops annual Coolabunia Classic Bull Sale The 9th Annual Coolabunia Classic Charolais Bull sale held at Coolabunia on Saturday, conducted by Aussie Land & Livestock, Kingaroy.

The Coolabunia Classic Bull Sale cleared 47 bulls from 47 offered to a red hot market which began when the first bull entered the ring and sold for $16,000, and didn’t let up till the last bull left making $12,000 completing a total clearance and a terrific average of $11,170 per bull.

Competition for the top end bulls was very fierce with 26 bulls making $10,000 or higher.

This year’s average of $11,170 was a $2010 increase on the 2020 average of $9160.

Bulls sold through the Brisbane Valley, Mount Mee, Woolooga, Biloela, Roma, Emerald, Gin Gin, Eidsvold, Nobby, Miles, Cloncurry, St George, Quilpie, Proston and the local area.

Graham & Katrina Blanch, Charnelle Charolais, had another very strong sale clearing all 16 bulls for a terrific average of $13,650 including the top money of $26,000.

Lot 32 Charnelle Quartermaster (P) sold to Stephen & Alison Kajewski, Bettafield Charolais, Emerald for $26,000. Quartermaster had a weight of 920 kgs at 22 months, EMA 140, fat 11/7, IMF% 4.1 and was by the new Polled Full French sire Johnny, whose semen was imported

by Charnelle in 2018. The Kajewski family have been buying Charnelle genetics since 2004.

Lot 27 Milford Braxton (P/S) sold to Riversleigh Pastoral, Woolooga for $25,000 a 870kg bull at 23 months, EMA 144, fat 13/9, IMF% 4.3. Braxton was the result of an imported embryo from NZ and was offered by Graham & Katrina Blanch Lot 7 Silverwood Quality (P) (R/F) sold to Maylake Pty Ltd, Linville for $18,000. Quality was a standout Red Factor Charolais bull with a weight of 940 kgs at 23 months. EMA 137, fat10/7, IMF% 4.8.

Quality was one of four bulls purchased by Maylake for a $12,250 average. These were all Red Factor bulls to put into a Droughtmaster herd. Maylake Pty Ltd was the volume buyer on the day.

While the cars are designed and built overseas, Australia is used as a proving ground, with local engineers giving input on ride and handling, so that the Kona feels like an Australian car.

This means that at high speed across dirt and gravel, the ride was settled and not ‘flighty’, engaging ‘SMART’ driving mode and ‘SAND’ traction mode added an extra level of performance, not recommended for extended driving on bitumen, but on gravel especially, even the lightest

touch of the accelerator saw the Kona leap ahead, while high speed ABS applications had the car controllable all the way down to a full stop, including left and right swerves, with not even a hint of being unbalanced.

Also impressive was the lack of body roll, by their nature, SUVs have a higher centre of gravity, making them more likely to have body roll, especially during fast cornering or evasive actions, like dodging wildlife on bush roads, but the Kona remained flat and controllable at all times.

Stripped MINI glimpse of the future

Although it is only a design exercise, the new ‘MINI STRIP’ could be a glimpse into the future of motoring, as the industry globally looks to become more environmentally responsible.

Designed by renowned British fashion designer PAul Smith, in conjunction with MINI, the car is intended to return motoring to its most basic, while applying the latest engineeering technologies, as well as being ultimately recyclable.

Guided by the overarching theme of ‘Simplicity, Transparency, Sustainability’, the car showcases inspirational ideas for a potential ways to increase sustainability in automotive design.

As the name suggests, the process began by completely stripping down a threedoor MINI Cooper SE and reducing it to its structural essence. Elements that the designer viewed as absolutely necessary were then defined, implemented and put in place, with sustainability taking a front seat.

Relive teenage fantasies with Countach

One of the most popular, and iconic, automotive posters of the 1980s featured the angular, low-flying jet fighter, look of the Lamborghini Countach.

The poster was a massive hit with teenage boys throughout the western world, who lusted after the Italian supercar as their ‘must have’ car once they were millionaires.

Now, one well-heeled, and no doubt lucky, bidder will be able to revisit those teenage dreams, courtesy of Shannon’s Spring Auction.

A timed, online auction, running from August 31 to September 7, the sale of the Countach is expected not only draw big money, but plenty of bystanders, all wishing they could make the winning bid.

Part of the 25th Anniversary build run by Lamborghini, this 1990 Countach was a genuine right hand drive car from the factory, although it was originally

Professionally stored and now showing 32,279km on the odometer, the car is supplied with an extensive history file, with bids over $490,000 expected.

Lowood Bowls Club receives an upgrade

The Lowood Bowls Club has received upgrades to its flooring and function area following the successful application of two Somerset Council Community Assistance grants.

Lowood Bowls Club Treasurer, Karen Brown, said the club feels privileged to have received the grants and subsequent upgrades.

“We have purchased new tables which have helped modernise our club and function area,” she said.

“The assistance was desperately needed, and we now have new flooring around the bar area too.”

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY SPORTS Queensland’s grassroots sport and recreation clubs are set to benefit from a new $9 million Active Gameday Projects fund to develop or upgrade playing fields.

Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the funds will help the sport and recreation industry by investing in smaller scale infrastructure that benefits

local communities.

“We know sport and active recreation clubs have been doing it tough during the pandemic,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“The Active Gameday Projects fund will help them get back on their feet, freshen up their facilities for existing members, and encourage new sign ups.

“Funding of up to $150,000 will be available for eligible organisations and projects who are able chip in 20 per cent of their project’s cost.”

Examples of projects that could receive funding include developing or upgrading playing surfaces and installing or upgrading irrigation and field lighting.

COMMUNITY SPORT IN DISARRAY

Grassroots sport in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset has been thrown into disarray with Queensland Health’s decision to prolong the easing of restrictions around community sport due to COVID-19.

The decision has devasted some community sports clubs, with Gatton Hawks Juniors President Sandie Nolan saying it has forced most of their junior sides to abandon the remainder of their seasons.

“It was devastating for the kids because they play in the

Toowoomba Rugby League Competition, which is still allowed to operate,” she said.

“It has been frustrating for everyone because a lot of the kids travel into that region anyway for school, and they’re in school with other kids that can still play football.

“The Hawks are looking at rescheduling some games but basically for our little guys, the six- to twelve-year-olds, their seasons have come to an abrupt end.”

A Queensland Health spokesperson said any type of organised community sport will be restricted until 4pm Sunday August 22 in impacted areas while they ensure there are no other cases of COVID-19 in the community.

“Organised sport of any description including community, club and recreational sport that also involves coming together for training or competition is not permitted to operate,” the spokesperson said.
