A WORD FROM GRACE I think we all agree this year has flown by (we say that every year) as we plan for Christmas.

I would like to encourage our vast and vibrant community to publicise your Christmas events with The Independent.

Our community noticeboard is a free listing of upcoming events and our advertising packages are a great way to promote your events.

Plus, you will reach our readers who may not be on social media or online.

Over the coming month you’ll no

doubt see me out and about at various Christmas events, snapping photos and getting way too into the Christmas Spirit.

For those events I can’t get to (sadly, unlike Santa, I can only be at one place at a time) I encourage you to send me photos of your Christmas carnivals, festivals, and community events for publication consideration and we can all spread some Christmas joy.

Weeds out of control I read with concerned interest that our Lockyer Valley Regional Council is looking for worthy causes to hand out grants of money to. While I don’t begrudge helping out the many worthwhile, voluntary and community organisations across the Valley, maybe it’s time to filter some of the money through to grass-roots causes.

Do our Mayor and elected Councillors really see what is happening on their doorstep, when they drive around the Valley on Council business?

Since the rains of the last couple of months, the Valley is inundated with weed, particularly on Council land, in creek beds and along road verges - wild tobacco tree, flowering lantana, fireweed, mother-of-millions, harrisia cactus to name a few. Many of the region’s most problematic weeds are not native to the Valley and often come from off-shore. Farmers are struggling to contain those weeds on their properties, trying to protect the precious environment, so new growth pastures can come through.

I know the Council has a huge investment in herbicide spray rigs for loan to anyone who applies for one and pays the appropriate deposit. I also believe there were some 50% subsidies available to purchase the relevant herbicides. Unfortunately, herbicides are now becoming increasingly unaffordable due to the pandemic and international shipping issues. On contacting the Council just last week, I was told there’s now no available subsidy dollars to assist landowners to urgently control said weeds.

Tanya, forget the Olympic Games and concentrate on the real things you promised to deliver on when you were again appointed Mayor of the Lockyer Valley. According to the Queensland Department of Local Government, Racing and Multicultural Affairs, “local governments create and enforce local laws, manage services and activities which are adapted to the needs of the community they serve.” Don’t the plethora of weeds fall into these categories?

Don’t sleep on the drought Despite the brilliant green vistas across the valley, recent rainfalls do not mean the drought is over.

Urban Utilities reported last week the rain is not falling where it is needed to fill Lake Wivenhoe and dam levels continue to drop.

Wivenhoe is averaging 40% capacity – as of the evening of November 14 it was 39.1% - which

is close to the lowest the dam has been since the Millennium Drought.

The region’s combined drinking water dam level are just below 55%.

Urban Utilities is urging all Lockyer Valley and Somerset residents to be mindful of outdoor water consumption following an increase in water usage.

Urban Utilities spokesperson Michelle Cull said while parts of the South East had experienced a wet start to spring, the rain has not had a significant impact on the region’s major dams.

“Wivenhoe Dam is close to its lowest level since the Millennium Drought, sitting below 40 per cent, so it’s important we all keep saving

water where we can,” she said.

Ms Cull said residential landowners and tenants can save water by using a water timer, soil meter, and water butts.

While the summer is predicted to be a wet one, water conservation is still a priority while water supply levels in dams are low.

The Bureau of Meteorology

outlook is for above median rainfall from December to February for most of Queensland.

Last week’s storms across the valleys brought green hills and some relief from the heat.

Daily falls up to 50 mm to 100 mm were recorded in the south-east of Queensland and north-east New South Wales.

Dam levels remain low despite recent rainfall and Urban Utilities are calling on Lockyer and Somerset resident to conserve water.

COVID-19 restrictions to ease and tighten at the same time

With the Queensland Governments announcement last week that restrictions will ease as first dose vaccination rates reach 80%, restrictions on those still unvaccinated are set to tighten.

Given the Lockyer Valley is currently at 58% double dose and the Somerset Re-

gion at 62%, the upcoming changes will be significant for both the fully vaccinated and unvaccinated.

Firstly, restrictions on businesses are set to ease towards full operating capacity and the mask mandate will be lifted, meaning the freedoms for those fully vaccinated will be unrestricted.

Restrictions on those who

are not fully vaccinated, however, will continue, with those people unable to visit hospitals, residential aged care, disability care accommodation and prisons, except for medical treatment, end-of-life visits, childbirth, and emergencies.

They will also be unable to attend hospitality venues such as hotels, pubs, clubs, taverns, bars, restaurants,

cafes, and a host of other indoor and outdoor venues.

Public transport and essential retail will still be open to the unvaccinated.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor, Tanya Milligan said those still unsure or concerned about getting vaccinated should speak with their local GP. “If you’re still not sure about getting a vaccination

or have concerns and questions, I would encourage the community to go to a trusted source, such as their local GP,” Mayor Milligan said.

“The removal of masks is welcome, however, the responsibility for businesses to resource and manage the restrictions definitely come at a real financial cost.

“As these changes are im-

plemented, I would encourage business owners who are experiencing difficulties to reach out to myself and Council, our State and Federal Member and also the Lockyer Valley Chamber of Commerce and Industry so we are aware and can advocate on the behalf of our community on issues that are creating difficulties, and also the positives.”

Support The Salvos for this Christmas The Salvation Army is hoping to raise $20 million this year across the country as they launch their annual Christmas Appeal that supports Aussies doing it tough during the festive season.

Major Jo Bulow from the Lockyer Valley Salvation Army said while Christmas is a time of joy and celebration for many, others doing find it an extremely difficult period for them personally.

“The increased isolation, financial stress and mental health impacts of COVID-19 this year will only exacerbate these issues,” she said.

“The Salvos want to leave no one in need this Christmas, and we need the generosity of the public this year to once again partner with us in support of locals doing it really tough.”

Brisbane Catholic Education are providing the remaining funds for the $7,205,179 building

project.

“Students and staff at Sophia College will benefit from the construction project which will deliver eight classrooms, three music, dance and drama spaces and practice rooms, an outdoor performance space, three science laboraties, and outdoor court and amenities,” Mr Buchholz said.

The idea of a month, Movember, when clean shaven men are encouraged to change their daily ritual and grow a moustache began in Melbourne in 2003; and is now a global phenomenon promoting an increased awareness of men’s health problems generally and, in Australia, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health. Similar campaigns are now held at this time in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Europe, The United States, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand.

The appearance of more moustaches at this time of the year should be a reminder that men’s health remains a concern all year round.

All chronic conditions such as obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart disease occur more frequently in men. And it probably comes as no surprise to learn that men generally indulge in more risky behaviour than do women; and this behaviour pattern has been the case for many centuries.

Even when young men survive their aggressive adolescence, they are still more likely to indulge in dangerous lifestyle pursuits – smoking, eating and drinking to excess and exercising too little. Also, self esteem, or lack of it, has an effect on men’s health; a critical issue in times of employment and financial

uncertainty. When men feel they have no control over their lives they are sometimes burdened with feelings of guilt and shame.

One out of every six men suffers from depression at any one time; and men are more likely to suicide than women. Also, men often do not recognise the symptoms of depression, and so do not seek help.

The Pharmaceutical Society (PSA) has produced a Fact Card titled Depression. It’s one of a series on mental health issues which includes topics such as: Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sleeping Problems and Relaxation Techniques.

There is also a Self Care Fact Card on Prostate Problems, which are common for men to develop as they get older. Of course, prostate problems don’t necessarily mean prostate cancer.

Furthermore, some types of prostate cancer are very slow growing and may not cause significant problems; but other forms of prostate cancer grow quickly and are life-threatening. Check out the Prostate Problems Fact Card, and if you experience any of the symptoms listed, consult your doctor. In any event, have a prostate check if you’re over the age of 50.

Remembrance Day

Across the nation, people came together to mark Remembrance Day on the 11th hour of November 11.

Helidon RSL sub-branch invited Senator Pauline Hanson to attend their service at the cenotaph.

Senator Hanson recounted her memories of her grandfather who was shot in Gallipoli.

“We’ve all got our connections and memories and what this means to all of

us,” she said.

She said she is ‘so proud’ of the defence personnel she has met.

“I have so much respect for the diggers, not just from Gallipoli but all the other wars that we’ve had Australians fight for, to represent us and fight for our freedoms.

“Never forget who we are, what was lost... what was sacrificed, for what we have today.”

Message for men

Mike Nowlan suffered severe suicidal depression for several months in 2017, due to heart issues which left him very fatigued.

This experience left him with a deep understanding of what happens to people in the grip of suicidal depression. He refused to give in, and sought professional help, with counselling and good medication. As he recovered, he realised that he had to help everyone understand the trauma that is suicidal depression. He is a volunteer speaker for Beyond Blue and often is invited to speak to groups in the community, as well as writing articles.

He encourages anyone suffering depression of any kind to seek professional help. You are not alone; there are many in the community suffering.

Friday November 19 is International Men’s Health Day

and is an appropriate time for all men to think about their physical and mental health.

In this current time of greater stress in the community, depression has grown exponentially and we need to think about the measures that we use to deal with uncomfortable or difficult situations.

Depression can affect anyone, anytime. So many things can cause the onset of depression, including poor physical health. The male of the species historically does not show their inner emotions to any significant degree; we are not as good as the female at talking out issues and getting a resolution.

Unusual aggressiveness towards your partner, excessive drinking, and diet changes to extremes are just some of the indicators that suggest all is not well in your mind.

Beyond Blue data shows that on average, eight Australians take their own life each

day, and males dominate this statistic. But the good news is: depression, whether it be suicidal or anxiety depression, can be beaten.

All that is needed is for us to acknowledge that a problem exists, and that we need professional help. You are not alone.

At some stage in our lives, more than 20% of the total population will suffer from some form of depression.

The issues that you have are not unique to you.

One may ask, why would a normal, intelligent, rational person take their own life?

Well, I can tell you, there is nothing rational about the depths of the mental black hole that is suicidal depression. The Black Dog has almost complete control over you and taking your own life is offered as the only way to end that torment. It is not you thinking those thoughts. It is the depression.

Have the courage to recognise that you need professional help. GPs and clinical nurses deal with these issues all the time, and are very knowledgeable. Counselling

and current medications can make a huge difference to your life. But you have to want to fix your issues. Do not blame others.

McHappy day at Riley’s Stand It was smiles all around on Saturday when Riley’s Lemonade Stand set up shop at Gatton Central McDonald’s for McHappy Day. The five-year-old started selling his homemade lemonade a few months ago and gives his proceeds to Ronald McDonald House Riley’s mother, Bec Pullen said the budding entrepreneur has set his stand up a couple of times,

most recently at the billy cart derby in Gatton “This is the fourth time for charity,” Ms Pullen said.

To date, Riley has raised $1990.80 for Ronald McDonald House, $173 of which was raised at Saturday’s stand.

When Riley started his stand Ms Pullen suggested he give the proceeds to charity.

Which charity to choose

“When Riley was born, he was in NICU [neonatal intensive care unit],” she said.

“We stayed at Ronald McDonald House while he was in there for five days.

“They do an amazing job.”

Students raise money for educational programs

Allison Baden-Clay’s nephews, Jacob and Benjamin Fowler, have made an impactful contribution to Strive To Be Kind month by driving fundraising initiatives at their school, West Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC).

Jacob and Benjamin are the children of Allison’s sister, Vanessa Fowler (OAM), who is chair of The Allison BadenClay Foundation and the new co-chair of the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council.

Together, the boys organised stalls and inspired fellow students to sell yellow ribbons and over 100 bunches of sunflow-

ers, as the whole College was splashed in yellow for a day.

It saw WestMAC raise $645 as part of Strive To Be Kind (STBK) month in July.

WestMAC Principal Geoff McLay said the College was proud of the achievements and values of the Fowler brothers.

“Jacob and Benjamin are positive role models within their peer group, they are kind, caring and considerate young men and as a result of those attributes, they are respected by their peers,’’ Mr McLay said.

Mrs Fowler praised WestMAC for supporting and helping to facilitate the fundraising effort.

“WestMAC has been a very positive school environment

for the boys, and it is exciting to have the College involved in sharing our message of kindness,’’ Fowler said.

“Our family want to ensure that Allison’s legacy is a positive one and celebrating her generosity and kindness through STBK Day is important to us.

“It is important for the community to be aware of Allison’s story so that they can be educated in recognising the signs of coercive control.’’

Mrs Fowler said STBK Day was about awareness and kindness, with all funds raised going towards developing and delivering educational programs for young people in the community.

Veteran Advocacy receive a funding increase Eight ex-service organisations (ESOs) and veteran support groups in the Blair electorate will share in $175,112 of funding as part of the Federal Government’s Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program.

In the latest round of the program, the Veterans’ Advocacy Community of Practice Brisbane West Incorporated and Moreton District PAWS Management both received grants.

In addition, six local Returned and Services

League (RSL) Sub Branches in the Moreton District have received grants, including the Ipswich, Ipswich Railway, Redbank, Redbank Plains, Esk and Toogoolawah Sub Branches.

Federal Member for Blair and Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Shayne Neumann, said ESOs, community organisations and other local veteran groups play a crucial role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the defence and veteran communities.

“BEST grants are an important way to assist ESOs, provide pension welfare and advocacy services, and to support veterans and their families seeking compensation and other assistance,” he said.

“I congratulate and thank these organisations who continue to support veterans and their families in Ipswich, the Somerset Region and Karana Downs region, and I encourage veterans who may require assistance to reach out to them.”

20 years in local government

Lockyer Valley Regional Council mayor Tanya Milligan and councillor Janice Holstein were recognised for 20 and 21 years of service respectively at the Local Government Association of Queensland conference in October. They look back on their careers in local government with GRACE CRICHTON Tanya Milligan’s 20-year career in local politics began with a ramp.

“At the time the Commonwealth Bank in Laidley was closing,” Cr Milligan said.

“It was all over an access issue for people with a disability, it was all over a ramp.”

At the Laidley Shire Council by-election on December 9, 2001 Cr Milligan won her seat.

“I thought I could be the noisy majority,” Cr Milligan said.

“It’s easy to throw stones and tell people how it should be done, or you’re not doing a very good job, or I could be part of the solution.”

Life in the public eye is not easy but facing scrutiny

made her ‘toughen up’ and learn to hold her own.

“I don’t want to be measured by my gender, how old I am or how old I’m not, I just want to be a good councillor and do good things for my community,” she said.

For other women in the community, Cr Milligan’s advice is to lift each other up.

“Seek out other likeminded women,” she said.

“I think we can have it all, but in the process we need to be kind to each other.”

Janice Holstein’s push for town water in Withcott was a springboard to her 21 year career in local government.

“At the time, we were in drought and kids were being told to take their own water to school,” she said.

“It was a real issue.”

To campaign for water for the town, she went to parliament house with councillor Steve Jones and Gatton Shire Council eventually got funding after a years’ long battle.

“That was, I guess, how I ended up running for council,” she said.

Working at a stock feed store gave her insight into public opinion and what was important to the people in her community.

“How far council’s come since the 2011 floods on disaster management is a big deal,” she said.

“I think we have learned an awful lot.

“The amount of work that’s been done in that space has been incredible.”

Mr and Mrs George hand over the reins

George and Beverley Lees are preparing for retirement after 30 years owning and running Lockyer Mowers and Motorcycles.

The couple have sold the businesses and are planning to travel and spend more time with their grandchildren when they hand over the keys this month.

George said they started their venture on July 1, 1991.

The Crescent Street store has been a Gatton staple, as have the Gatton locals themselves.

“We’ve met many many people; we seem to be known everywhere we go about the place,” George said.

Beverley too is recognised down the street.

George is looking forward to seeing more Essendon AFL games.

“But now we’re just relaxing just as much as we can, now the pressure’s off,” Beverley said.

A couple from Charleville, Guy and Renee Jansen, have bought the business.

George will show them the

ropes before retiring at the end of the year.

“It’ll be pretty much business as usual,” George said.

“We want to thank the community for the support they’ve given us over the years.”

Students got their hands dirty and tried a trade at Lockyer District High School last Friday.

Initiated by Link and Launch program co-ordinator Erin Boyle, it was a chance for female senior students to get a taste for a career in trades.

“I see quite a few girls who finish school and think they might want to enter into a trade industry,” Ms Boyle said.

However, Ms Boyle said these young graduates are apprehensive of entering a trade profession if they did not do it

in school, or they are too scared to, or don’t know to get into it.

Three women in trades careers went to the school thare their experiences, two of whom are apprentices.

Student Abbey Scotney said the guests had insightful comments to share.

“They were talking about how they’ve faced a few struggles being in a mostly male-dominated area and how they got through it,” she said.

“I thought that was really inspiring.”

Church celebrating its centenary The Catholic church in Coominya is celebrating its centenary on Sunday, December 5 from 11:30am, with Archbishop Mark Coleridge holding Mass before a lunch at Church grounds.

Built in 1921, the Church cost just over a thousand pounds, with Father W.M. English and generous donations from Mr John Newman who gave the land and a large amount of timber, beginning a rich 100-year history for the Coominya Catholic Church.

At its opening on March 6, 1921, a large gathering of people came, with a special train running from Ipswich to Coominya on the day to transport the crowd.

At that time, Archbishop Duhig’s addressed the gathering with the words, “We

Trevor and Daphne Litzow have a close affinity with Carinity Karinya Place in Laidley after both were heavily involved in establishing the aged care community in the 1960s.

Now, 50 years on, the brother and sister-in-law have moved into the aged care home they helped build.

Trevor, who was on an early committee that oversaw the running of Karinya Place, said a lot of money was raised through the

community.

Daphne also tirelessly raised money for the cause, travelling hundreds of kilometres on the fundraising trail.

“We did an awful lot, every month we had stalls, lamington drives and lolly drives, everything you can think of to raise the money, we did it,” Daphne said.

Trevor and Daphne both moved into Carinity Karinya Place this year.

“I’m glad all our hard work paid off.”

Toogoolawah markets are back After a brief hiatus, the Toogoolawah Markets returned on Saturday.

Run by the Toogoolawah District History Group, the markets featured familiar and new stallholders to the groups at the museum.

Thereza Vermaak is the new or-

ganiser for the popular markets.

Recently moved from Narangba, Ms Vermaak saw participating in the markets as a way to be involved in the community.

The Toogoolawah markets will return on December 11.

Ambreys impress at drought concert The Ma Ma Creek community came together to enjoy company, a meal, and live music at the Drought Relief concert on Saturday.

Drought Angels, The Lifeline Farmer Ross Blanch and Rural Aid had stalls for locals to see what relief services are available for the Lockyer Valley.

It was the first concert

for Rosewood family band The Ambreys, who entertained with hours of country and blues music.

The five siblings, Ashley, Maddy, Gabriella, Elly and Oliver were joined by Louise Wasalski on double bass.

Event organiser Eva Schmidt of the Ma Ma Creek Hall committee said a great mixture of people attended the concert and they plan

to host more live music events at the hall in the future.

“They are such accomplished musicians,” she said.

“They were just amazing.”

Order’s up at Ken’s Kitchen Order’s up at Ken’s Kitchen It didn’t take long for word to get around Gatton: “Ken’s back.”

Thai chef Ken Duong officially opened Ken’s Kitchen at Cahill Park Sports Club two weeks ago.

The Lockyer Valley will always be home for Ken, who opened Thai Kitchen in the early 2000s.

He has set up shop in the bowls club and the golf club over the years, keeping the locals fed with tantalising curries and Thai cuisine before he stepped back from work due to family matters.

“Now I’ve put in a joint venture here with Paul [Eveleigh] at the leagues club,” he said.

“This time around it’s not just Thai, it’s everything, steak, seafood, as well as Thai.

Ken started his career as a chef in the 1980s.

“The thing was, my language was limited,” he said.

“I thought with cooking, the only thing that matters is the taste.

“I started with Western cooking, then went to my dad in Thailand and when I came back, thought Thai had interesting flavours that is very similar to where I came from, which was Cambodia.

“I had finished my apprenticeship in Sydney and then married a Thai lady and I became a Thai chef.”

Ken came to the Lockyer Valley in the early 2000s to pick tomatoes.

He went to the Federal Hotel one night, saw the kitchen, and asked if he could rent it out to start his own restaurant.

He leased the flat above and Gatton was introduced to Thai Kitchen.

“My son, who is now a proud father of two, he used to sleep under the tables on a little mat in the Federal Hotel,” Ken said.

Now back in town, Ken said his reception has been very warm.

“People have been very very welcoming,” Ken said.

“Lots of people are very happy to see Ken’s back in town.”

Growers to benefit from VegNET

Vegetable growers in the Lockyer Valley are set to benefit from a $14.1M national extension program delivered through Hort Innovation and led by Australia’s peak industry body AUSVEG which aims to boost productivity and deliver the latest on-farm developments.

On-the-ground extensions for the VegNET 3.0 program will be undertaken by Lockyer Valley Growers Inc, with nominated regional development officer, Zara Hall, saying the project builds on previous VegNET programs to address high priority regional challenges.

Celebrate local Manufacturing Member for Nanango, and Shadow Minister for Manufacturing, Deb Frecklington has congratulated Plenty Foods on their successful application to the Federal Government’s Modern Manufacturing Initiative grant program to help build a unique Nut Flour factory in Kingaroy.

Mrs Frecklington said the project will be of great importance to the South Burnett Region and will put a new focus on manufacturing in the region.

“I would like to congratulate Josh Gadischke and his team at Plenty Foods on their vision to create a nut flour factory right here in Kingaroy,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“Through the support of this Federal Government grant, this vision will now come to fruition, creating employment and significant flow-on benefits for the local supply chain and broader

Grants boost puts athletes on pathway to podiums The Australian Government with the AIS will deliver almost $44million in direct grants to athletes (dAIS) through to Paris 2024, supporting their longer-term medal prospects at Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.

The dAIS grants scheme is being increased to $14.63m a year and now includes a transition fund to help eligible athletes navigate retirement from high performance sport.

The biggest shift in the

new-look dAIS grants scheme is to provide a longer term incentive, rather than a short term reward, to nominated athletes to ensure they reach their peak at pinnacle events including the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games.

AIS CEO Peter Conde said: “dAIS grants will become future-focused. It will be about supporting athletes to build longer-term plans towards success, rather than rewarding past successes based on short-

term milestones.

“The emphasis will be on identifying and supporting those athletes who are on an upward trajectory and will be challenging for medals at the next Olympic, Paralympic or Commonwealth Games.

“The AIS spent two years consulting on these changes, including feedback from athletes, and we believe it gives athletes greater confidence and support to focus on their ultimate goals. dAIS grants will now be reviewed

annually, instead of twice a year. That immediately gives athletes more stability and certainty over their future funding.”

Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck said the Government was proud to continue backing the development of Australia’s athletes.

“The recent Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics are proof our athletes are great ambassadors for our country,” Minister Colbeck said.

BATTING ABOVE AVERAGE Somerset Regional Council has awarded Somerset Excellence Bursaries to two young women who will be competing at a regional level at the 2021 School Sport 1315 Years Girls Cricket Team at the State Championships being held at Amberley.

Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said council was delighted to support Samantha Bremner and Shari Anderson. “[They] are two high-achieving young sportswomen, and Council is delighted to be able to support them as they continue to shine in their chosen sport,” Cr Brieschke said.

“Providing these bursaries under the Community Assistance Grant policy is one way Council can support individuals who have the talent and drive to take their passion to

the next level. We wish them both the very best at the State Championships.”

Samantha Bremner has previously competed in the Metropolitan West School Sport 13-15 years Girl Cricket Team, has been a Met West and SEQ representative for five years, and a Southern Blaze representative for two years.

Shari Anderson was selected to compete in the Sunshine Coast 13-15 years Girl Cricket Team at the Caloundra Cricket Club trials, has been attending weekly training at the Glasshouse Mountains and has also been selected as Captain for the 2021 team.

The bursaries are under Council’s Community Assistance Grant Policy which provides $100 for Regional Level representation.
