What’s on your Christmas list?
SANTA is listening, boys and girls, and he wants to know what Lockyer and Somerset residents want for 2023. Does a certain road need
volunteers or funding? Maybe your town needs more retail options, public transport, or leisure activities?
So, I would like to ask readers, how can we improve our lives, our towns, and our region in 2023?
Is your internet up to scratch? Do you want better health services?
Are your local police there when you need them?
and the slow return to normal after COVID-19.
Think as big or as small as you would like – perhaps your sport team would just like to win for once, or perhaps you want Australia to become a
republic?
Is your local council ticking your boxes, or can they do better?
Are our State and Federal Members representing your interests?
Write to us at The Independent, because we would love to know what is most important to you.

Halloween Grinch
I REFER to Grace’s comments in November 9’s issue of The Lockyer and Somerset Independent and will come out and admit openly that I am one of those Grinches.
Since when did it become ok for kids to see
dead in a tree?
Or eight-year-old girls dressing up as dead brides in a wedding dresses covered in blood.
What we are doing when
we accept this sort of activity is desensitising our young people to violence.
These things do happen in real life, they are called suicide and domestic violence.
One day we are celebrating Halloween and the next we are talking about ‘The Day for Daniel,’ it does not make any sense.
At Halloween we encourage children to go to stranger’s houses and ask for lollies, then we are saying stay away from strangers.
Let us, as a community, discourage this sort of behaviour and encourage more wholesome activities such as the Billy Cart Derby or maybe the Council could put on an alternative activity on the 31st October?
Please think carefully about what you promote for your children and what
you want your children to grow up accepting.

Calls to make Lowood Police Station 24 hours
BY
RECENT criminal acts have spurred politicians to call
Lowood.
Three police vehicles were torched at the Lowood station on November 2, prompting Somerset Regional Council (SRC) and Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald into action.
In council’s meeting on November 9, Councillor Sean Choat said there was an escalation in crime in southern Somerset over the past month.
“Criminal activities have comprised anti-social behaviour including public drunkenness and drug taking, destruction of public property, and cases of theft and damage of private property,” he said.
“The feeling in our community is that if not even the police station itself is safe from such acts of wanton destruction, how can residents be expected to feel safe in their homes?
“The issue here is the lack of resources and Lowood should be a 24-hour station and not manned on a part time basis.”
In October 2022, there were Queensland Police Service division, according to QPS data.

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said the incident was unacceptable and concerning.
“The Palaszczuk Government has and continues to invest heavily in police resources and numbers across
Queensland, maintaining our commitment to 2025 new police personnel by 2025, which would include 150 in the Southern Region, which includes Lowood,” he said.
“Matters of where police are stationed and resources are operational are therefore a matter for the Police Commissioner.”
SRC resolved to write to Minister Ryan and Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carrol requesting a delegation

BVRT art coming to Fernvale
SUSAN McConnel’s artwork will soon make its mark in Fernvale to bring the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail experience to the next level.
Somerset Regional Council approved an application from the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Users Association (BVRTUA) to have a mural painted on the back walls of the Fernvale Tourism Centre last Wednesday.
BVRTUA president Paul Heymans said the idea for the mural came from the Fernvale Community Association.
“The Fernvale mural project with artwork by Susan McConnel will be a fantastic tourism asset both for the rail trail and the Somerset region,” Mr Heymans said.
“She does these really quirky characters, and they’re very Australian somehow…
I think she’s got a good sense of the history of the place.
“The cattle running away from the steam engine… that

Mrs McConnel said she loved researching the railway for the project.

Regional property ticks boxes
BY GRACE CRICHTON
REGIONAL and rural estate is still sought after by buyers, despite recent interest rises.
Real estate in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset, particularly acreage properties, are attracting owner occupiers from southeast Queensland cities.
Ray White Esk and Toogoolawah principal Wayne Jaenke said the market peaked during the height of COVID but Somerset properties were holding their value.
“The market over COVID got to a peak and it got to a bit of a frenzy stage where people were spontaneously buying,” he said.
“We sold a few properties site unseen in that time.”
The market has cooled since then and interest rate rises have cast doubt in some buyers’ minds, but regional areas will hold their value more than cities, Mr Jaenke said.
“The city areas, Sunny Coast, Gold Coast, did get a bit overheated,” Mr Jaenke said.
As of November 2, the Reserve Bank cash rate target was 2.85%,
up from 0.35% as of May 4.
It was a steep increase after more than two years of historic lows with the cash rate sitting under 1% since September 2019.
“If interest rates tend to keep hiking a little bit, bit by bit, which there’s indication that they might, it will dampen the market,” Mr Jaenke said.
Country living continues to attract people for the lifestyle.
“The simple reason is there are a lot of city-based people who still wanted to move out here,” Mr Jaenke said.
“They’re looking at other areas too, they’re looking right across this section of the southeast, that’s Kilcoy right through to
Plainland, Gatton, Laidley, Hatton Vale,” he said.
Pre-COVID, there were some tree-changers but the pandemic caused a sizeable shift.
“We’ve seen dribs and drabs of it but it escalated when COVID happened,” Mr Jaenke said.
“It changed people’s mindset about where they wanted to be.”
Hot property goes under the hammer
SOMERSET properties went under the hammer at Ray White Esk and Toogoolawah’s major auction event on October 29, generating $7.9 million in sales.
Ray White Esk principal Wayne Jaenke said their auction and post-auction clearance rate was 62.1%.
“The state average on auctions at the moment is sitting at about 38%,” he said.
“It’s a good result if you compare it to the state.”
Held at the Somerset Civic Centre, the event attracted 64 registered bidders and 200 attendees.
Post auction interest was quite strong, particularly for the new Windsor Downs development.
“There were a lot of people that couldn’t bid under auction terms, as auction terms are cash unconditional,” Mr Jaenke said.
Of the eleven Windsor Downs lots up for sale, each around 11 acres, four sold at auction, four are under contract, and three remain on the market.
“Our auction process is not so much about the auction on the day, it’s about creating that competition and creating interest in those properties,” Mr Jaenke said.
“The developers were quite happy with where we are at and the results we’ve had so far.”

Save time and money, telehealth brings health services to you
ELIGIBLE patients no longer need to spend time and money travelling to Ipswich Hospital to speak with a clinician.
Telehealth services are increasingly allowing patients to be treated at home, or at their closest health facility.
West Moreton Health
(WMH) provides telehealth services for several conditions, ranging from heart medication titration to borderline personality disorder and more.
WMH interim chief
Dang said the arrival of telehealth meant hospitals were no longer constrained
by bricks and mortar when delivering services.
“We have a wide range of telehealth services across multiple specialities, some of these include the Heart Health Hub, for cardiac consumers; Hospital in the Home, for consumers who can be treated at home; MeCare, for consumers
with chronic disease; and specialty telehealth clinics for pregnancy care,” Mr Dang said.
“Telehealth is also widely used across our Allied Health services with consults often used in dietetics, particularly in our gestational diabetes clinics, and cancer care and
chronic disease clinics.”

LEND a hand to help vulnerable people in your neighbourhood this Christmas.
Laidley Community Centre are collecting donations to make Christmas Hampers again this year.
Centre manager Alana Wahl said they are seeking donations of non-perishable items or cash donations to help vulnerable residents.
“Last year we were able to give out over 45 hampers and presents and it would be fabulous to be able to match or beat that again this year,” she said.
“Donated items can be dropped down to the centre or the café during any of our opening hours between now and Christmas.”
Donations may include Christmas gifts for all ages, non-perishable foods, Christmas foods, or a cash donation
($20 sponsors a family).
The centre will open its Community Pantry to local families in need.
They can participate in a free shopping experience in
time for Christmas.
Donations can be left at Laidley Community Centre, 13 Mary St Laidley, or Community Grounds Café, 129 Patrick St Laidley.
“Thank you for considering using this as your opportunity to share some good cheer to people who do it tough during the holiday season,” Ms Wahl said.
Young families invited to paddle and play
FAMILIES of Gatton and surrounds are invited to join The Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre’s Paddle and Play sessions held every Tuesday at 11am.
Children under the age of 5 and parents can get in the water together and meet new families.
Learn to Swim coordinator Jenni Smith said the session was proving very popular.
“It’s getting those new mums together that are
either new to the area or who don’t know very many mums with kids of the same age,” Mrs Smith said.
The session is $5 per child and free for parents.
If you are new to the community and would like to meet other young families, Paddle and Play is the perfect environment to make those connections.

Fire ant treatment is safe
Have you ever used flea treatment on your pets or mosquito control around your home?
The product being used to eradicate fire ants from Australia contains the exact same active ingredients but at a lower concentration.
The treatment is not a poison. It is tried, tested and approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) and is safe for humans and animals when used according to the label and APVMA permits.
First found in Brisbane in 2001, fire ants are a category 1 restricted matter (Biosecurity Act 2014). While only 2–6mm in size, fire ants can destroy crops, damage machinery, and render paddocks, parks, playgrounds and backyards unusable. They have the potential to cost the Australian economy billions of dollars each year if left untreated.
The National Fire Ant Eradication Program has a challenging but very important job to do, and we are currently working in parts of the Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, Somerset and Ipswich local government areas. So what does eradication involve?
Eradication treatment is the only proven way to eliminate fire ants from our landscape and protect the Australia we know and love.
Fire ant expert and entomologist Dr Ross Wylie says we are eradicating fire ants using the best available methods internationally.
“Eradication involves treating
targeted areas multiple times, over several years with an insect growth regulator. We can’t just treat once or twice, we need to keep coming back. This is part of the plan,” says Dr Wylie.
“There may be nests on your property or on a neighbouring property and you may not even know it.”
Treatment is delivered between September and June using helicopters, utility terrain vehicles, and handheld spreaders on smaller, more easily accessible areas.
“The treatment we use consists of small pieces of corn grit soaked in soybean oil which contains a low concentration of insect growth regulator.
It essentially acts as ‘the pill’ for ants, preventing the queen from reproducing workers.
If she can't replenish her workforce to look after her, she and the colony will eventually die,” says Dr Wylie.
The product contains pyriproxyfen, which is registered for use with horticultural crops (for treating whiteflies and scale insects), as well as animal flea collars, fly control spray and pest and parasite management for horses and cattle.
Our eradication treatment contains minimal insecticide. With five grams (g) of insecticide within each kilogram, the active ingredient equates to only 0.5% of the total product.
For a 500 square metre (m²) residential block, just 100g of product would be applied containing only half a gram of the active ingredient. On a 10 acre (four hectare) property, eight kilograms of the product would be applied which would contain only 40g of
insecticide.
This ensures minimal impact on flora and fauna, and little chance for animals to source enough of the treatment product to negatively affect their health.
An animal, for example a horse, would need to consume every single granule sprinkled on a 3,333m² property to be impacted by the bait.
Even then, the low concentration of active ingredient has minimal effect, and the granules sink deep into the grass making it practically impossible for any animal that isn’t a fire ant to detect each piece.
On limited occasions we also use a product containing s-methoprene when
treating near waterways. We do this to protect aquatic life, as s-methoprene has been shown to have a lower effect on aquatic animals.
The presence of fire ants in our environment is a much greater risk to local wildlife, pets and farm animals than the treatment itself.
By following the product application guidelines and permit requirements, we can protect the people and animals within our treatment area.
It is vital we treat every property, whether you see signs of fire ants or not. Just one missed nestcould be the difference between reinfestation and further spread, jeopardising our eradication efforts.
We all have a role to play in protecting Australia from fire ants, and we can achieve eradication if we work together.
Visit fireants.org.au or call 13 25 23 for more information.
