Firstly, my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to those who KDYH VXIIHUHG ORVVHV LQ WKH ÁRRGV ZKHWKHU ÀQDQFLDO RU sentimental.

As Bruce said last week, we see the best and the worst in these times.

This week, Jacob and I bring you more stories of resilience, rebuilding, and perseverance (pages 7-9).

This is just a snippet of your stories, a list that is by no means exhaustive.

I have no doubt our community will recover and take on board the lessons Mother Nature taught us, as we have before.

As Troy Qualischefski said, we have done it before and we will do it again (page 17).

Coincidently, while we are living through history, it might be time to consider putting your experiences, or your family history, on paper.

Have you seen what’s planned for Glen Rock?

Probably like most readers in Esk and surrounding region, Glen Rock has been the backdrop to our beautiful town and frankly when I heard Council has acquired it I thought “Well thats good, it will be nice to see it protected and well managed”. ,QGHHG HDUO\ SODQV IRU LPSURYHG ÀUH tracks, access from town and a track to allow people to take in the views from the top seemed like logical steps in better stewardship of the Rock.

Well after hearing some grumbles about the Master Plan that is now out for consultation, I thought I’d better dig a little deeper and read the plan. Boring I know but ..... EEK do we really need what is now proposed in Esk? It would appear that somewhere along the line sensible and appropriate development has gone out the window and what is proposed now is a mountain that will be gifted excluVLYHO\ WR DGUHQDOLQ ÀOOHG MXQNLHV ZKR like to throw themselves down steep

I always say ‘everyone has a story to tell,’ and your chance is coming up when memoirist Sue Golstiver comes to Laidley next month (page 14).

With so much happening, it is easy to forget that we are actually living through history.

We owe it to ourselves and our descendants to keep a record.

I hope I am contributing to this in my small way, through this newspaper, I want to encourage you to do it too.

Personally, I actually support the need for dedicated facilities for these adrenalin junkies, but using examples from other cities, such facilities can be successfully developed in large clapped out areas like quarries, they should not be forced upon an unsuspecting town and their special and unique treasures.

As far as a Master Plan goes I actually think its a reasonable plan, not too wordy and allows planners to look at the cost implications but for goodness sake lets back up a bit, where is the independent review of what values are currently in the area, where is the real and transparent consultation with local businesses and residents, where are the options for how the mountain could be used and don’t be conned by potential

Applications open for Lockyer Valley Community Grant Scheme Round 1 of the Major Community Grants initiative is now open for community and sporting groups in the Lockyer Valley.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milli-

gan said the program was GHVLJQHG WR SURYLGH ÀQDQcial assistance to a range RI QRW IRU SURÀW FRPPXQLW\ organisations. ´2XU QRW IRU SURÀW FRPmunity groups have been

hit hard by the impacts of the global pandemic and this initiative is designed to allow them to undertake projects, activities or HYHQWV ZKLFK EHQHÀW WKH wider community, depend-

ing upon the availability of funds and the merit of projects, activities or events,” Cr Milligan said.

“If there are groups in the region who have ideas on initiatives or projects

that could really provide a boost to the Lockyer Valley community, I would encourage them to apply.”

The program is for non-recurrent grants between $500 and $4000

and are awarded to applications focusing on community development, arts and cultural development, social services, recreational services and environmental initiatives.

New faces of Fernvale PCYC

BY JACOB HAYDEN Fernvale has a Sergeant Youth Club manager permanently based at the PCYC to raise youth engagement.

Sergeant TJ Baker was assigned the position on January 24 and said he had plans for holiday programs and after school sports, but it would require volunteers.

“We’re always chasing volunteers, people who have any experience in running any sort of games or sports… we’ve got a great facility here just begging to be utilised,” Sgt Baker said.

Sgt Baker has been working with local schools to encourage young people to engage with the PCYC. “We have a community

GHYHORSPHQW R൶FHU WKDW UXQV Braking the Cycle which is a driver education program… and she also runs a youth leadership team for young people looking to build their leadership skills.”

Acting Sergeant Teegan Masters joined the Fernvale PCYC last week and said she was excited to begin new programs and get young people through the door.

“Kids get bored out here because public transport goes twice a day to Ipswich and if you don’t get on the bus there’s nothing to do out here,” Sgt Masters said.

“When kids are bored they play up a little, and it would be great to get things in place so they can come and direct that energy.”

Mozzie disease rise cause for concern The spread of mosquito-borne diseases Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) has triggered a multimillion-dollar response from the government.

The Federal Government announced a $69 million package to control the spread on Friday.

Minister for Health and Aged Care Greg Hunt said WKHUH ZHUH FRQÀUPHG human cases of JEV in four

states.

“Sadly, it has been FRQÀUPHG WZR SHRSOH one in Victoria and one in NSW, have died of JEV and I offer my condolences to their families, friends and community,” Minister Hunt said.

Chichi’s Ice Cream owners Darren and Michelle Bartlett are now having to relocate after starting their business

seven weeks ago.

Mr Bartlett said the closure came as a surprise to everyone. ³)RU WKHLU ¿UVW PRQWKV you can see how hard they’ve worked and what they’ve achieved, to have it taken away for such a trivial matter, it’s really going to hurt the community,” Mr Bartlett said.

Kindred Spirits hosts multiple small businesses including Hullabaloo Bazaar, the only women’s clothing available in Fernvale and Lowood.

They also host various events like Men’s Workshops, Children’s Play Collective and provide a space for healing services, psychologists, and organisa-

tions like Drug ARM. Under The Poinciana Tree owner Debbie Mulder has been with Kindred Spirits since their opening and said the business was essential for the community.

“It gives the small people an opportunity to get their name out there, and that’s all being taken away from them,” Ms Mulder said.

Tarot reader and healer Lyndsey Ebdon said Kindred Spirits has provided her a safe space.

“I’m an ex-soldier and I have PTSD, so for me leaving my house is a big thing,” Ms Ebdon said.

“I have one constant, and that is here, feeling safe and surrounded by people who support me.”

Rate payers have an extra eight weeks to pay their bills as part of Somerset Regional Council’s UHVSRQVH WR ÁRRGLQJ At last week’s ordinary meeting, council voted to extend the due date in reVSRQVH WR VHYHUH ÁRRGLQJ across the region.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the rate relief will apply to residential and commercial ratepayers.

“We are extending the due date for payments from the original due date of Tuesday, 5 April 2022 to Tuesday, 31 May 2022.”

“By default, this means that the applicable 15% discount is also extended meaning an additional 56 days to take advantage of the discount.”

“Two of the local councillors came out and they y didn’t think it wass council’s problem,” m,” Mr Russ said.

Mrs Russ said council then directed them to the SES who were unable to help during the ÀRRGLQJ “They put me onto main roads, main roads put us back onto the council,” Mrs Russ said.

“We’re pensioners, we haven’t got that sort of money.”

The couple then contacted Moreton Hydraulic Services Director Mark Harnett who used

water dowsing rods to determine a water source.

“I went downstream of the sinkhole and the wires crossed a number of times, then I went upstream... and each time the wires crossed in a dead straight line,” Mr Harnett said.

Mr Harnett mapped out the

locations where he detected water and projected that the water was coming from a council-owned quarry opposite the Russ residence.

As of Monday March 14 Gordon and Jeanette suspect WKH\ ZLOO KDYH WR ¿[ WKH VLQNKROH themselves.

Doors open in Grantham

Minden recovery still ongoing

While there is still work to be done, Grantham businesses opened their doors to trade again last Wednesday.

Grantham Fuels owner Scott Barton said there was a lot involved to be operational again, including replacing the fuel bowsers.

Along with all the stock in the shop front, Mr Barton lost tools ZKHQ WKH EDFN ZRUNVKRS ÀRRGHG ZRUNVKRS ÀRRGHG “Everything was gone,” Mr Barton said.

“There was a lot RI VWX൵ ZH MXVW scrapped that wasn’t even worth trying to save,” Mr Barton said.

After nearly two weeks of lost trade, the shop was ready.

“We had a mad d rush the night before... .. but it was good to get it open again,” Mr Barton said.

Sculptors in the spotlight BY *5$&( &5,&+721 Ceramic horses, bronze cats, and Jacaranda wood cephalopods are just some of the sculptures on display at the Lockyer Valley Art Gallery.

Thirty-four pieces from 15 artists of Sculptors Queensland explore the natural, the surreal, and the creative in three-dimensional form.

“I’m hoping to build this to at least a bi-annual event,” Mr Hardt said.

Author Sue Goldstiver is hosting a workshop series in Laidley to coach anyone to become the author of their own stories.

“If you can write a sentence, you can write a story,” Ms Goldstiver said.

“Everyone should write down their life story and start to capture it.”

“When I was researching what it was like for women, for example, in the 1850s, there was nothing,” she said.

“You might get a diary written by a rich woman, but she’s not telling you what it was like to give birth with no medical help around.

“One day people will want to know that about this era.

“It’s not really captured in social media… so I really encourage people to have a

life story.”

The Brisbane writer will come to the Laidley library for the series of four linked workshops, starting in April.

The course is open to anyone – everyone has a story to tell.

“Maybe it’s their parents’ story, their family story, their mother or father,” Ms Goldstiver said.

“These don’t have to be works of art, they just have WR EH D UHFRUG WKDW UHÀHFWV WKH person in their own language in their own way.”

Grants kickstart food creations Research collaboration opportunities DQG JUDQWV RI XS WR DUH RQ R൵HU to Australian agri-food entrepreneurs, thanks to a new grant program from The University of Queensland (UQ).

The Industry Kickstarter Grant program, led by UQ’s newly formed Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, aims to connect researchers with industry to commercialise new food products, reach new markets, and secure further investment.

Alliance Director Professor Melissa Fitzgerald said the program will transform simple ideas into sustainable production methods, helping create new commercially viable foods.

“Our Industry Kickstarter Grant program enables businesses to put together their launchpad for food innovation success,” Professor Fitzgerald said.

“If you’re a food entrepreneur who’s been wanting to get a new idea to market – now’s the time – we want to collaborate.”

The funding and support provide agrifood businesses a runway to develop a proof-of-concept, solve key industrial or agricultural problems, pull preliminary

data on a product idea, or gain greater data to pursue a larger grant.

“And we’ll be linking grant recipients to other grant opportunities, so these businesses can truly leverage the strides they’ll be making,” Professor Fitzgerald said.

Grants are available for businesses to collaborate with UQ in one of three areas: primary production, advanced food and beverage manufacturing, and supply chains.

Funding will be awarded in the range of $10,000 - $30,000 for a 12-month grant, and a contribution from industry is required – either a minimum 25 per cent cash contribution or agreement to host a student over the 12-month period of the grant.

Professor Fitzgerald said the Alliance will be looking favourably on applications where a student is involved.

You’d never know it’s not a GT

It’s hard to believe Lockyer Valley resident Wayne PiHrpoint’s stunning GT Falcon Replica started its life as a V8 Fairmont GS. Only a trained eye would pick it’s not a GT. Wayne poured years of thought, hard work, and coininto this car since purchasing it in 2009.

Before Wayne acquired the car it spent its life in the Darling Downs.

The car was broken into while in a workshop kshop holding yard and nd a lot had been stolen.

“Seats were missing, steering wheel was gone and even the dash had been unbolted and taken,” Wayne said.

“I wanted to do a full restoration, so I llooked k d past what wasn’t there, made the purchase and started the search for only original GT replacement parts.”

As a truck driver, Wayne searched all over Australia for parts he could pick up on his interstate trips.

“There are original GT parts anywhere from Townsville to Melbourne that I DFTXLUHG WR ¿QLVK WKH EXLOG ´ he said.

“Having limited time to build this car due to being a long-distance truck driver, it took a while but I am very proud of how it turned out,” Wayne said.

RUGBY LEAGUE GATTON HAWKS Gatton hosted a trial game against the Caboolture club in A Reserve and the 8QGHU ·V 75/ KDYH PRYHG IURP DQ 8QGHU FRPS WR DQ 8QGHU WKLV season. This has given the club a test run for the coming season to try new players at different positions and give the patrons a taste of what they’ll see in the coming season. A good crowd were in attendance to view the teams. It was a hot day, and the game played in quarters for extra drinks to be taken.

Gatton were successful in all grades however the score didn’t indicate the intensity of the games.

Veterans volunteer at Women’s Day breakfast For the third year, Lockyer Veteran cricketers volunteered at council’s International Women’s Day breakfast.

The men helped set up the day before and assisted on the day.

For those looking for friendship, fun, and exercise, indoor bowls ticks all the boxes.

Grantham and District Indoor Bowls club meet every Friday afternoon at the

Gatton Senior Citizens Hall to play a friendly yet competitive game.

Member Chris Freeman said the long-standing club, who have played in Gatton for over 20 years and played in Grantham for many years before, have 14 members and

would welcome more.

“It’s a friendly game, it’s a bit of activity,” Mrs Freeman said.

Mrs Freeman said they had two members in their 90s.

Coral Kammolz, 95, and Lottie Long, 92, are regular players. *Space restrictions may apply

“They’re our longest members at the moment,” Mrs Freeman said.

The game is friendly to those who are older or have disabilities.

“It’s an easy game to play and an easy game to learn,” Mrs Freeman said.

President Madeline O’Dea said she enjoyed the social side and mental exercise she got from the game.

“If you were at home you’d be sitting watching TV but here you get exercise,” she said.

There are two indoor bowls

clubs in the Lockyer Valley.

The Laidley club play at the Laidley Cultural Centre.

Membership numbers took a hit during COVID, but the club is back playing again.

“If you want an outing, come along,” Mrs Freeman said.
