I am from Brisbane and studied at the University of Queensland for a Bachelor of Journalism and Arts.

While studying I grew to love meeting new people and learning new things.

I always told people that studying journalism felt like I was studying everything all at once.

In my downtime I love writing, playing chess, ice skating, and practicing the guitar, piano and ukulele.

Then there were the millions wasted on the Laidley-Rosewood Road east of Laidley. Two years of waste resulting in a widened road, a no passing line all the way, with an extra meter plus wide strip down the length of the road. Why? Now, the TMR intend

Residents can get COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters at West Moreton Health’s upcoming pop-up clinics in Laidley and Esk. Laidley’s will be held at the Laidley Sports Complex on February 19 and 20, March 19 and 20, April 23 and 24, May 21 and 22, from 8.30am-4pm.

The Esk clinic will be at Somerset Civic Centre on March 5 and 6 from 8.30am4pm and April 2 and 3 from 8.30am-4pm.

These clinics are open to all eligible residents from aged 5 and over - children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

No bookings are needed, walk in for vaccinations and boosters - anyone aged 18 and over can get their booster 3 months after the second dose.

The Ipswich CBD Community Vaccination Clinic site is open daily.

Railway Street Upgrades Complete The lifespan of Railway Street in Gatton has been extended by up to 10 years, following upgrade works.

The three-night asphalt works program and line marking is complete, with crews focusing on overlaying the section of Railway St, from North to Spencer St. The preservation works

required a full road closure, including parking and footpaths.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Infrastructure Portfolio Councillor Janice Holstein thanked the community and businesses for their patience and understanding during the process.

“We were committed to

renewing the road surface with as little impact to the community as possible,” Cr Holstein.

“We wanted to avoid a full depth reconstruction project, which would be a greater cost to ratepayers.”

This was an extension on work completed last year between North and Crescent St.

BY GRACE CRICHTON Volunteers at Coominya Rural Fire Service will be well fed thanks to Bunnings Plainland’s donation of a new barbecue and gas bottle.

Fireman Michael Thompson said he approached the hardware store before Christmas last year after going

twelve months without one.

“Every time we had an event somebody had to bring one from home,” he said.

“Now we’ve got one we can leave it at the station which is great.”

They will use the barbecue to keep the team fed on training nights and after jobs and for fundraising on open days.

“We were in desperate need of one,” Mr Thompson said.

“When the guys come back DIWHU ¿JKWLQJ D ¿UH VRPHRQH can cook a meal for them.”

The 15 active members are often busy.

“Over the year, it probably averages one job a week or close to it,” Mr Thompson

sad. ³:H GRQ¶W MXVW GR ¿UHV ZH [go to] car accidents around the area as well.”

In previous summers, the average was higher.

This year’s wet weather has made for a quieter season, but in previous years the Somerset station gets busy.

“Last year and the year

before at this time of year we were out nearly every day,” Mr Thompson said.

On behalf of the station, Mr Thompson thanked Bunnings Plainland for their donation.

“It’s very much appreciated by everyone at Coominya Fire,” he said.

“Thank you so much.”

Rare rural subdivision approved Somerset Regional Council has approved the subdivision of four new rural properties.

Deputy Mayor Cr Helen Brieschke said the rules around subdivision under the SEQ regional plan generally prevent new rural properties being created but there are exceptions such as where a gazetted road splits a parcel of land in two.

“We were happy to support the development application near Fernvale and another in Toogoolawah which met all State and local requirements,” Cr Brieschke said.

“We know there will be great demand for these new parcels.

“We have also been pleased to sell another two lots at our Braemore rural subdivision at our meeting [last week] and we are looking forward to welcoming more new residents to enjoy our space and rural lifestyle.”

Opportunity to learn sign language in Somerset Awesome Auslan will be holding an Australian Sign Language (Auslan) workshop in the Kilcoy Sports Centre on Saturday February 26.

The workshop will teach newcomers the Auslan alphabet, numbers and greeting signs and phrases.

Awesome Auslan teacher and presenter Michaela Reece said that participants should be able to learn enough that they can make life easier for the deaf community.

As a deaf person herself, Ms Reece has spent the last four and a half years working with

deaf services, teaching community classes and Auslan at home programs.

“I’m passionate about it, and I know that rubs off on my students, which is what I love,” Ms Reece said.

“I say Deaf with a capital D when I describe my identity and I am

proud of my deafness and I embrace the culture, the language, the community.”

If the taster class is a success then Ms Reece would like to come back every couple of months and build on her classes with the community.

Ms Reece is also hoping

to offer Deaf Awareness training to the community.

“Basically that is two to four hour sessions… covering more in depth the deaf culture, deaf community, how to communicate with and approach and get attention of deaf people.

The class runs on

Saturday February 26 from 9:30am to 12pm and costs $25 per person.

Depression impacts women too

BY MIKE NOWLAN Generally, discussion on mental health tends to revolve around the male of the species.

Women of all ages account for about 22% of all suicides, as opposed to males with 78%.

This disproportionate number could be due to the average female being much better than the average male at expressing emotions that expose their inner feelings.

They could be more willing to talk an issue out, WR ¿QG D UHVROXWLRQ HLWKHU among themselves or with a medical professional.

But there is another side to

the female and depression.

And that is the male partner.

It can be a huge burden to carry the strain of the male partner’s emotional turbulence.

Men of all ages tend to be unwilling to accept that they have an emotional problem.

I hear many stories about excessive drinking as a cover by the male for the emotional issues that he is trying not to deal with, or even violence towards the female partner because of his inability to come to terms with depression.

Mental health still carries a huge stigma in this country.

Eligible groups and organisations in the Lockyer Valley are invited to apply for funding to deliver tree planting projects to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

Federal Member for Wright, Scott Buchholz said the Australian Government was providing grant funding to plant trees in honour of the legacy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and her 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

“I am calling on local schools and community groups to contact my RIÀFH WR GLVFXVV SRWHQWLDO projects for nomination for funding,” he said.

He said the program is one of a range of national and community events planned by the Australian Government to celebrate The Queen’s Jubilee year.

“In Wright, we will have $100,000 in funding for 10 projects,” he said.

See the imagination of our young artists The Lockyer Valley’s youngest artists are part of a special exhibition currently on display at the Lockyer Valley Art Gallery.

Little Kids BIG Art showcases a selection of artwork from children attending various Lockyer Valley Child Care Centres.

Lockyer Valley Community Services Portfolio Councillor Michael Hagan said the exhibition celebrates youngsters and their big imaginations to create works of art.

New bakers at the Old Fernvale

Fernvale’s newest bakers are learning what it takes to bake Australia’s best pies and pastries.

The Old Fernvale Bakery received their trophies for WKHLU ¿YH ZLQV LQ ODVW \HDU¶V Australian Pie contest on Wednesday.

The owners of the bakery Bill and Lyn Rose have taken three young apprentices under their wing to continue the business’ legacy of national award-winning products.

Mr Rose said they will be encouraged to enter competitions with the Baking Association of Australia.

“These young guys here are hoping to be the best bakers in the world,” Mr Rose said.

Patrick Graham worked front of house at The Old Fernvale Bakery, before moving into his apprenticeship two years ago.

“I used to watch them PDNH VWX൵ DQG WKRXJKW LW would be a good trade to get

I used to watch them make stuff and thought it would be a good trade to get in to. in to,” he said.

At just three weeks into his apprenticeship, David Symss says that the Bill and his team have raised his expectations of what bakers can actually do.

“I aspire to be the best that I can be and win the awards that I am capable of winning, pushing myself to win and bringing it back, not just for myself but for the bakery,” he said.

Head baker and mentor Bradley Gordon has won multiple awards for The Old Fernvale Bakery, including the Best Gourmet Pie in the Great Aussie Pie competition.

Alex Milne, David Symss and Patrick Graham are aspiring to continue the Old Fernvale Bakery’s award-winning legacy.

Scrub soared through life

Gavin James Krenske, better known as Scrub to his mates, Gav to his family, was born on 11th June 1969 in Laidley to Barry and Elaine Krenske (nee Dallinger).

Scrub was the second born.

His siblings were Narelle, Shane, Brenda and Warren.

In primary school he and Janene Stephan had to go to Brisbane to represent the school and wear formal attire.

Janene commented that he didn’t ‘scrub’ up too bad.

Our meaning of ‘scrub’ sensational, caring, respectful, unique, bloke.

Scrub attended Ropeley State School.

As a young boy his love of ¿VKLQJ SRVVLEO\ VWDUWHG ZKHQ his mum use to take her kids down to the gully to play.

His pushbike was his means of transport, going on ¿VKLQJ WULSV DURXQG WKH YDOOH\ with some of his mates.

After some thought, and a few weekends in the barn at home, Scrub built a set of wings. +H ZDV JRLQJ WR À\ WR DQG IURP KLV ¿VKLQJ VSRWV 7KH PDLGHQ YR\DJH ZDV R൵ of the bridge near the Tenthill pub.

With his mates watching, and a big run up he launched

himself and with a few moments of gliding he dropped straight into the water.

His mates dived in to help untie the wings and Scrub’s answer to the problem was, I will have to make the next set a bit lighter.

Scrub out grew the pushELNH DQG EURXJKW KLV ¿UVW vehicle and not long later his ¿UVW ERDW ZKLFK OHG WR D OLIH ORQJ DGGLFWLRQ WR ¿VKLQJ Many people had an adventure with Scrub on one of his ¿VKLQJ WULSV Every chance he had he was on the water somewhere.

After leaving grade 10 at the end of 1984, he went to work on farms around his local area.

He tried his hand as a labourer for a property developer at Kawana Waters, doing fencing and piping. +H WKHQ ZHQW R൵ WR WU\ WKH fruit picking in Victoria only to return a week later. Not his cup of tea.

He had a few other jobs and then a job came up in spare parts at David Evans.

That was the start of a long career in helping others.

In 1995 he thought he would be the new Stefan, so he bought a hair salon in Gatton.

He ran it successfully for a number of years before selling it in 2002.

Whilst pretending to be a hairdresser he worked with Brett Steinhardt doing Telstra jobs and working on his lucerne farm.

Water got a bit low so he tried his hand at being a meat worker. oing Whilst doing this he wass dobs ing odd jobs on days R൵ IRU KLV brother in-law Derek which o turned into full time nd of until the end 2009.

Scrub went back to David Evans in 2010.

Whilst doing this he still had the passion to farm.

He then rented a farm just outside of Gatton where he could follow his passion of farming with the help of his dad and later his sons.

On 17th January 1999 Scrub and Maree met.

They dated a few more times and realised that they wanted to be together.

He stepped into the role of-

sstepfather, hhelping Maree to Ma raise Paul, Angela and Mitchell.

Maree found out they were expecting and when she told him, he was over the moon about being a father.

His mates were saying he was skyting and beating his chest like a silver back gorilla about having twin boys.

Once the twins Andrew and Matthew were born, it was seen by the older siblings that he had enough love for them all and that’s when he became dad to them all, and even had the honour of

walking Angie down the isle.

And as the grandchildren came along he loved the role of being poppy to them.

Scrub was an unique person, one of a kind in our generation.

From any of his family and friends that we have talked with, there was not one person that had a bad word to say about him.

Scrub’s life was lived to the full, it was always an adventure.

We know he was taken too soon, but God upstairs obviously needed him to help sort out issues that come under Scrub’s criteria.

From a young man who made a set of wings, so he FRXOG À\ WKURXJK OLIH KDG D SUDFWLFH UXQ R൵ WKH 7HQWKLOO bridge, may have crashed that day but he soared through life.

He will be sadly missed by his partner Maree, and their children Paul and Danielle, Angela and Mathew, Mitchell and Mikaela, Andrew and Sophie, Matthew and Kiara.

His grandchildren Hunter, Koby, Alexis, Cassidy, Archer, Teddy and Maverick.

His father and mother, his siblings and their extended family.

Healthy Land & Water and the International Fund for Animal Welfare invite landholders along Laidley Creek to take part in a research project surveying the region’s platypus populations.

Little is known about the local platypus population, but this research will help identi-

fy and prioritise conservation H൵RUWV WR DVVLVW WKH VSHFLHV Ecologist Tamielle Brunt from the Wildlife Preservation Society Queensland’s PlatypusWatch Network will be speaking at a platypus workshop for the Lockyer community held by Healthy Land & Water (HLW) at

Mulgowie Hall on February 20.

HLW Principal Scientist and Great Eastern Ranges Board Member Liz Gould said that previous records about platypus in the Lockyer are very limited, particularly in the smaller creeks.

“Currently we don’t know

a great deal about what is happening with platypus in Laidley Creek,” Ms Gould said.

“We are interested in ¿QGLQJ RXW KRZ WKH ORcal platypus population is faring, particularly post the EXVK¿UHV ZKLFK we know impacted water

quality.”

Platypus populations are good indicators of water quality, and because they shed large amounts of DNA into the water they are the perfect candidates for conservation survey work.

Bureau of Meteorology: above average heat and rain in 2021 The Bureau of Meteorology issued the annual climate statement for 2021 on February 8.

Although 2021 was the coolest year on record since 2012, it ranked as

the nineteenth warmest year on record at 0.56deg warmer than the 1961-1990 average.

Both mean annual maximum and minimum temperatures were above

average for most of northern Australia, Tasmania, and parts of the west coast, but below average for parts of inland New South Wales.

Stunning Electric Orange LC Torana Lockyer Valley resident Glenn Vos has owned this stunning 1970 LC Torana for about 10 years now and a lot of hard work has been done to get it to where it stands today.

Glenn said the car started its life in 1970 in Melbourne as a sports edition 161 sixcylinder.

When Glenn bought the LC it was living on the sunshinee coast in Queensland. land.

The previouss owner had chosen the colour scheme that remains to this day, although hough Glenn has changed all the trimmings from black to polished chrome.

The car was purchased

by Glenn as a roller with no motor, so he had plenty of options to work with.

“A 434 small block Chev was in mind and that’s what it got,” Glenn said.

With the Chevy he added a gear box to match and a fully manualised two-speed Powerglide with a 5500-stall converter to make sure the /& ZRXOG ODXQFK R൵ WKH mark when needed.

The Torona has a custom interior with a full Autometer dash setup, roll cage, race harnesses to keep you strapped in and an original XU1 steering wheel.

Glenn said as soon as he started driving the passion was there, and he has owned an enormous number of cars - most of them supporting the Holden badge.

Glenn is in a few car clubs, including Trick Car Club Toowoomba, Gassed Up Toowoomba, Aces & Eights Toowoomba and East Coast Muscle Car Club.

He loves to drive the Torana and tries to get it out to as many car shows, show and shines, club cruises, and test & tune days as possible.

The Torana sits on some nice Centre Line Convo Pro wheels with 265-50-15 tyres on the rear with a pair of front runners that give it a great look and disc brakes all round to make sure stopping is a breeze.

Glenn said now that he has ¿QDOO\ DGMXVWHG WKH FDU WR KLV liking, his goal this year is to head to Willowbank Drags to see how quick the little LC Torana will go.

Swimming dive into new school year Lockyer District High School’s swimming carnival PD\ KDYH ORRNHG GL൵HUHQW this year, but that did not stop the competitors from giving it their all.

LDHS acting Head of Department PE Georgie 6PLWK VDLG WKH VWD൵ KDG only a week to put the event together with the delayed return to school.

The decision was made to host only competitors at the carnival on Friday and not hold a whole school competition.

“All the kids here today are kids who want to compete,” Mrs Smith said.

“From here, we’ll have a core group who will trial for Darling Downs swimming.

“I think we’ll have a good few individuals who will be in good contention for a Darling Downs team.”

Warwick defeat Lockyer in close Mitchell Shield match at Cahill Park Lockyer elected to bat after winning the toss, but lost wickets at regular intervals.

No one could put together a good partnership.

Kade Martin produced a stylish 39 to be best with the bat and Brandon Sabburg compiled 20.

Lockyer were bowled out in the 45th over for 127.

After taking four wickets

with the ball for Warwick, Samson Lowney then opened the batting for Warwick and made batting look easy scoring 62 off 60 balls in a dominate display. +LV ÁXHQW KLWWLQJ SURGXFHG VHYHUDO VL[HV WDNLQJ toll of any loose balls.

However, when he was out with the score on 101 Warwick lost 6 for 23 to

bring Lockyer right back into the game.

There were some nervous players in the Warwick shed, as they felt that they had a long tail.

But in the end 127 wasn’t enough with Warwick scoring the runs 7 wickets down, Liam Bichel being the best with the ball for Lockyer with 2 for 16 off 6 overs.

Dusk till Dawn charity run/walk event The Dusk till Dawn charity run/walk was held at Toogoolawah Showgrounds on Saturday February 4 from 6pm until 6am on Sunday.

There were 94 entrants in various events, including 10k, 15k, half marathon, marathon, 3hrs, 6hrs, 50k, 100k

and 12hrs.

A strong wind was blowing most of the afternoon, making it hard setting up tents and marquees.

The event started on time by the old tradition of ringing a cow bell, done by our local favourite around Australian

runner, Ron Grant.

Winners in the 12hr were Barry Loveday who ran 125.4k and Charlette Roberts who ran 114.4k.

In the 6hr the winners were Shelly Marie running 66.5k, whilst Clinton McPherson ran 60.5k.

Most sport injuries can be prevented with a little bit of planning.

By understanding how

injuries occur, we can take action to prevent them.

How you prepare for your sport has a major impact on your chance of remaining injury free.

Firstly, consider which sport is right for you.

Consider your body type: are you short & stocky or long and lean?

Consider the demands

Your level of health: has it been a long time since you did any sport?

If you have had health or body restrictions, you should choose an activity to suit your condition.

As we get older as in past

Match your training to the sport.

REDBACKS SCORE SPOT IN FINALS The Gatton Redbacks Football Club welcomed a new head coach to the men’s senior team in what promises to be a record breaking year of soccer.

Vice president Jackson Bell said new head coach Wayne Richardson will not only lead the men’s senior team but will help other coaches in the club.

“We haven’t had a head coach since Tony Edwards was here two years ago,” Mr

Bell said.

“We’ve had a lot more structure that Wayne is going to instil up here [at senior OHYHO@ WKDW ZLOO ÀRZ WKURXJK to other coaches.”

Mr Bell said the coach was working his magic already.
