Stock effluent needs control

BY SAM DANIELS Somerset Regional Council has lobbied the State Government through the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) to provide funding for washdown bays in strategic locations to improve livestock effluent control measures.

The Somerset Council said effective control measures for livestock effluent have long been a concern for the Somerset region where the transport of cattle impacts on community amenity.

Recently, the LGAQ provided a response from the Director-General of the Department of Transport and Main Roads which suggested a broader approach was needed that included liaising with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

a proposal to build a livestock effluent disposal facility at the Colinton rest area on the D’Aguilar Highway had taken place but said the proposal was not suitable.

“The Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) proposal did not address important road safety and environmental considerations as well as potential impacts to the truck stop’s intended use as a rest area,” the spokesperson said.

“As our top priority is the safety and efficiency of the state-controlled road network, we were unable to support the proposal.

“If Somerset Regional Council wishes to pursue potential control measures, we suggest they liaise with ALRTA and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries as the lead agency.”

Livestock control measures are being discussed by Somerset Regional Council

Traffic and Safety Advisory Committee member Cr Sean Choat said the response from the Director-General was weak considering livestock effluent breaches fell under the banner of Queensland Transport.

“The response from the Director-General is not strong enough and does not consid-

er community interests,” Cr Choat said.

“We are a community which proudly produces beef, but this means we are also a transit route via both the D’Aguilar and Brisbane Valley Highways.

“Whilst we are appreciative of the beef industry and the great benefits it provides our

community, the transit comes with its own issues which can be a source of nuisance through townships like Kilcoy, with full effluent tanks leading to spillage on local streets.

Cr Choat suggested a trial site would be of great benefit while further research continues.

Crime Stoppers CEO Carmen Jenkinson visited Gatton and Laidley last week as part of the per-

manent national firearms amnesty.

“The fight against gun crime is stronger than ever and by joining forces with Lockyer Valley and surrounding regional communities, we can all play our part in keeping our towns safe and reducing the risk of illicit weapons falling

into the wrong hands,” she said.

“During our regional road trip, our key focus is to educate the public on the threat of unwanted, unregistered and illicit firearms in our communities.

“Our message to regional Queenslanders is to keep your firearms licence

current, ensure all of your firearms are registered and keep them securely stored.”

The focus of the regional road trip in the Lockyer Valley and surrounding regional towns was to educate the public on the threat of unwanted, unregistered and illicit firearms

and encouraging residents to hand in these firearms so that they cannot fall into the wrong hands.

“Firearms are often kept in innocence and ignorance of their illegality or simply overlooked and forgotten in people’s homes,” Ms Jenkinson said.

The amnesty provides an

opportunity to safely dispose of a firearm without cost or penalty.

Crime Stoppers participated in a national firearm amnesty in 2017, which saw 57,324 firearms handed in along with 2,432 parts and accessories and more than 80,000 rounds of ammunition.

Lowood QAS’ new training tool

Carl Foster was voted the president of Laidley Pioneer Village last week.

Lowood Ambulance Station introduced two of its newest members to the wider community on Saturday.

Simeon Coates took over as acting station officer from Angela Perry, but the second introduction was less lively.

A high-fidelity paediatric training manikin was unveiled to the local ambulance committee (LAC), complete with heartbeat, sound effects, and a pulse.

Acting officer in charge Angela Perry said the manikin is capable of simulating a number of possible scenarios that they may be called to.

“It could be asthma, it could be choking, it could be a cardiac arrest,” OIC Perry said.

The manikin’s vital signs respond to the treatment the paramedics provide in the training simulation.

“We go to quite a number of paediatrics in Lowood and the local areas, it is to make our paramedics better at what they are already good at.”

Lowood Local Ambulance Committee president Peter Bowerman, acting officers in charge Angela Perry and Simeon Coates with the new training manikin.

Funding to purchase the manikin came from the efforts of the LAC and the wider community.

“The LAC had some funds but they also went to local

community groups and did fundraisers,” OIC Perry said.

“There was a lot of participation and the community raised a great deal of money.

“We’re really proud of them

and want to show them the fruits of their labour.

“Today is a thank you for all the community sponsors and donators who helped us fund this manikin.”

At their annual general meeting last Wednesday, the Laidley Pioneer Village appointed new executive committee members including president Carl Foster.

Mr Foster has been a member of the village for five years and held the treasurer’s role for the past two and a half years.

He is keen to keep working on the displays at the village and it has been his favourite part of volunteering at the village.

“I’ve worked on most of the displays here,” Mr Foster said.

“I did the butcher’s shop, very instrumental in the new shed up the back, and getting the barbeque area up to where it is now.”

He hopes to expand the village to include more displays, particularly working displays.

During his time as president, Mr Foster hopes to see more community involvement with the village.

NDIS set to receive a boost in South East Queensland More than 1,700 Queenslanders with disability have had their lives transformed under a state-led push to help them access the $14.5 billion National Disability Insurance Scheme

(NDIS).

Minister for Seniors and Disability Services, Craig Crawford, launched the Assessment and Referral Team (ART) in early September and it is now available

to residents with a disability in Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Somerset.

Mr Crawford said the ART program came after the Palaszczuk Government found the Commonwealth

had not done its job of attracting new participants to the NDIS. “As an outcome, the Queensland Government negotiated a $20 million investment from the Common-

wealth to help more people with disability to access the NDIS,” Mr Crawford said.

“The Disability Connect and Outreach Program is how we are making an impact with that Common-

wealth money.”

“This is a win for people living with disability and a win for Queensland, creating growth in the disability services sector and stimulating the region’s economy.”

Rural Road Safety Month showcases reminders

September is National Rural Road Safety Month and local police in Toogoolawah and Esk said the campaign is a timely reminder to residents.

The campaign focuses on seven key pledges, including being in the right state of mind to drive, scanning the road, knowing your limits, staying sharp through regular breaks, not driving through flood water, being alert to wildlife and driving to suit road conditions.

Senior Constable Justin Willcocks from Toogoolawah Police said for the Somerset area the pledge holds particular importance.

“Recently police have attended accidents involving livestock and wildlife, motorists becoming fatigued on roads they don’t normally travel and those not driving to the conditions in wet weather,” Constable Willcocks said.

For Rural Road Safety Month, police are reminding motorists to take care on country roads.

“All these accidents have resulted in people being seriously injured.

“Motorists can expect an

increased police presence on the Brisbane Valley Highway and surrounding country roads.”

Constable Willcocks urged

motorists to be considerate and think of their loved ones and themselves when travelling through rural areas.

“We all want the same thing, for people to reach their destination safely,” Constable Willcocks said.

Road safety projects added to SRC budget The Somerset Regional Council adopted a revised budget that includes an additional $10 million in new capital works.

Deputy Mayor and Audit Committee member Cr Helen Brieschke said the revised budget will help Somerset Council complete much-needed road

upgrades.

“Council is aware Esk Crows Nest road is an important agriculture and livestock route that is becoming a popular short cut for tourists to and from the Darling Downs,” she said.

The work will complete the sealing and widening of Esk Crows Nest Road,

widen the Minden Village intersection at Lowood Minden Road and replace the dip culvert on Gregors Creek Road.

“The widening of the Minden Village intersection will assist with the ever-increasing traffic flow of the area and improve driver safety and the dip replace-

ment on Gregors Creek Road will improve flood resilience,” Cr Brieschke said.

Cr Brieschke said that Council is grateful the Queensland Government is funding these projects under the SEQ Community Stimulus package, amounting to nearly $5 million.

“The extra funding brings these infrastructure projects years forward,” Cr Brieschke said.

“These road projects are in addition to other stages budgeted on the same roads which have been jointly funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments and Council.

LAIDLEY POLICE

A 36 year old male from Summerholm was charged with unlicenced driving after being intercepted in Regency Downs. He will appear in Gatton MC on the 27th of September.

A 58 year old female from Kensington Grove was intercepted driving an unregistered and uninsured car in Hatton Vale. The driver was issued an infringement notice for this offence.

7 other infringement notices were issued for 2 x fail to keep left, 1 x fail to give way at a T-intersection, 1 x fail to give way at a give way sign, 1 x fail to stop at a stop sign, 1 x drive defective vehicle and 1 x drive in contravention of licence restriction.

Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Head and Macgregor Street, Laidley after one vehicle failed to give way. Both vehicles were towed and both drivers taken to hospital with minor injuries and shock.

Two vehicles collided at the intersection of Orton and William Street, Laidley after one of the vehicles failed to give way. One driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by QAS. Two vehicles collided in the eastbound merging lanes onto the Warrego Highway at Plainland. One vehicle was forced of the road as a result of the collision and the vehicles airbags deployed. One of the drivers sustained an injury to their arm.

Spring is definitely here, and summer not too far behind if these hot sunny days are any indication.

I’ve seen a surge of activity over the last few weeks and have no doubt the coming ones will be just as exciting.

Spring isn’t just a time of change in our environment, it seems to bring about a change in ourselves.

Spring time makes us want to get outside, enjoy the sunshine and each other’s company too.

It was encouraging to see large events go ahead even with the threat of a lockdown on our doorsteps (or ‘the l word’ as one person put it).

Masks couldn’t hide the smiles of parents and early childhood educators in

Laidley at Under 5’s day (page 12) and showed how important it is to be connected with the community, right from an early age.

There was no shortage of entertainment, with the Lockyer District Dancing Festival serving up hours of exceptional dance and local talent (page 10), and at the top end the Esk Community Choir delighting audiences with the vocal prowess (page 14).

The first month of Spring also marks Rural Road Safety Month, a pertinent message year-round.

So while we’re getting out and about it our region, travelling for sport, work or pleasure, keep safe of the roads and let’s ride into the rest of the year on a high.

Seqwater flood damages ruling The ruling in favour of Seqwater in relation to flood damages is devastating for the 2011 flood victims who have had to fight so hard for so long.

This cruel appeal by Seqwater leaves the victims without half the compensation they are owed.

I foreshadowed this in a speech to Parliament in March this year when it was revealed Seqwater had not included any liability in their financial statements for the $440 million they owed in damages.

The Premier had the power to direct Seqwater not to undertake this appeal, and now we have an awful and confusing situation for the flood victims.

These flood victims deserve better from this Government.

Please return our sheep My son’s beautiful sheep and 2 week old twin lambs have been stolen from Laidley North. It was Monday 6th September between 12pm and 3pm that our sheep and twin baby lambs didn’t come back after grazing in the paddock between my property and the chook farm behind us. I spoke to all of the neighbour’s and found some interesting facts. One neighbor said they had seen our sheep at the chook farm that day and 2 workers were seen rounding them up. All of our remaining sheep (a herd of 15 came back) but sadly the mother and twins were taken from us. I spoke to the manager at the Chook farm and she advised me that none of the workers had seen them or recall anything about the events of that day. My son and wife are truly devastated as the mother sheep was hand raised and never wondered. This is one of the lowest acts one could ever do and the people responsible don’t have any conscience or feeling for anyone but themselves. I ask if anyone has seen them as they quiet distinctive Border Lester Sheep. I know that there isn’t many around these areas as I had to go all the way to Inglewood to purchase my first flock. If anybody may have CCV footage in and around Laidley, Foresthill, Gatton and surrounding areas would be greatly appreciated. Somebody somewhere knows what happen to our babies. We will never give up our search for them. May God help us find them. I hope we can find them safely.

Playful paintings at Glen Rock After some refurbishments, Glen Rock Gallery Esk has reopened with the exhibition ‘Seriously: Playing with Paint.’

Mt Beppo artists Daph Johnstone and Nelle Smith display a selection of the outcomes of their artistic journeys.

They describe the artworks in their first exhibition as belonging to the schools of “I wonder what happens if I do this” and “When to stop.”

Daph’s artistic journey began when she joined the folk art group in Toogoolawah. She paints for pleasure and hopes visitors to the galley will share this pleasure.

Nelle’s first foray into art so surprised her, she thought she’d better stop.

But encouraged by the friendly and generous folk at Mt Beppo Artists group, she continues to surprise herself.

The exhibition is on until October 6.

The Yugura Dancers will return to Laidley next Friday for NAIDOC celebrations.

Rail Trail research provides valued insights A research partnership between the University of Queensland (UQ) and Somerset Regional Council has provided valuable insights into experiences of Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT)

users.

Researchers asked BVRT users about their experiences, how they spend their money in the region, travel motivations and trip characteristics.

Economic Development

and Tourism Advisory Committee member Cr Jason Wendt said the research provided valuable insights.

“It gave us a chance to see what users enjoy and where they feel we could improve

their experience while using the trail and visiting our region,” Cr Wendt said.

The research was jointly funded by Somerset Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

After postponing in July, Lockyer Valley will celebrate NAIDOC week in Laidley on Friday September 24.

Spirit of the Valley Inc even organiser Idell Wadley said everyone is welcome at the event.

“NAIDOC week is important because it’s an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to come together, showcase their talents, and celebrate their achievements,” she said.

This year’s theme is Heal Country, a theme Ms Wadley said is especially

applicable to the Lockyer Valley community.

“We have been through a lot in the last few years, and most of that was environmental,” she said “From my perspective, Heal Country shows how healing being connected to our country and our identity can be.”

The day-long festival will include a welcome smoking ceremony and performance by the Yugura Dancers, markets and native foods, fire twirlers and entertainment.

NAIDOC celebrations take place at Ferrari Park Laidley from 10am on Friday September 24.

Koala conservation a worthwhile effort

A conservation project led

by Research Fellow Dr Erin Hurley from Griffith University has partnered with the Queensland Government to help mitigate threats to koala habitats.

Dr Hurley said the koala is a national icon and conservation efforts are vital to help save it.

“As a part of this project we are running a survey to gain an understanding of what local communities currently think and know about koalas,” Dr Hurley said.

A mural commemorating the attack of the Australian Light Horse on Beersheba during World War I has been completed at the Esk RSL Museum.

The Esk RSL Memorial Club commissioned Allora brothers Malcolm and Kerry Nicholson to undertake the work, which adorns a south-facing wall at the Museum.

The brothers said this has probably been the most drawn-out mural they have worked on, taking three months instead of about ten days.

They said the delays were

due to COVID restrictions and other unanticipated factors.

However, the work is already creating a lot of interest from locals and visitors.

Malcolm Nicholson said even though a lot of research went into the subject, in the end the artists paint a mural that appeals to the public and will encourage visitors to the Museum.

The Esk RSL Museum will place a garden bed and a plaque mounted on a stone block in front of the mural to identify the artists - Nicholson Art Company.

A fleet of historic motorcycles descended on the Lockyer Valley last week when the Historical Motorcycle Club of Queensland took to the roads to mark their 50th Anniversary.

It was all about the littlest locals at Under 5s Day, held at Laidley District State School last Thursday.

Laidley District State School deputy principal of curriculum Nicci Martin said the community event, organised by Together for Lockyer, coincided with the Laidley Spring Festival and Child Protection Week.

“It’s an event that provides soft entry points for services, so parents can ac-

cess various early childhood services and learn about what they do and what they provide,” she said.

“We want to promote protective factors for children, which include things like kindy participation, playgroups, and having their health checks.

The activities of the day were targeted to children under 5 and gave parents a chance to meet local services in a fun environment.

This year, they opened their home to visitors for the Laidley Spring Festival’s Open Gardens.

“We don’t have a theme or anything, we just like to have

The couple moved from Victoria seeking a warmer climate five year ago and are keen entrants in garden competitions.

“The last competition they had we only got third in the street appeal,” Andy said.

Determined to keep improving, the Farleys added more to

Ipswich, and they all thought it looked pretty good.”

Planning the garden began in earnest earlier this year.

“It would be six months ago when we first started designing it all,” Andy said.

The immaculate green lawn was enhanced by flourishing flower beds, meticulously planned and planted.

There’s no stopping the music

BY GRACE CRICHTON Toogoolawah was once again entertained by the Esk Community Choir and guest artists at their concert ‘Can’t Stop the Music’ on Sunday.

The recipient of the annual bursary was also announced, to high school student Aydan Forsyth.

Esk Community Choir president Marina Crichton said the $1000 bursary is awarded to a young musician of ‘outstanding musical talent.’

“Aydan came with glowing references from his high school music teacher and his instrumental music teacher,” Mrs Crichton said.

The choir was joined by bagpiper Don Drysdale and Sunshine Coast string ensemble Stings and Things.

Somerset Regional Council have commenced plans for a new library and wellness hub opposite Alexandra Hall in Toogoolawah.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said council has been working with Graham Richardson Associates architects to help identify the best options for the new library and wellness hub.

“We will be using land

that we own opposite Alexandra Hall right in the Toogoolawah commercial centre for the new facility,” Cr Lehmann said.

“We want people to be able to visit their local library, do their shopping and grab a coffee and lunch without having to move their car.”

The Mulga Bull ride is taking place at the Mulgowie Hotel on Friday, September 17 and the Manager of the Mulgowie Hotel, Sarah Croker, said the night will be full of entertainment.

“The gates open at 6pm and we’ll have the bull rides until 9 before Mik Oberle kicks off the after-party which goes until the wee hours of the morning,” Ms Croker said.

“There are several categories for the bull rides too, including an under 12’s and 15’s mini bull ride, an under 18’s junior bull ride, a novice bull ride and then the main bull riding event.

Awassi gets a helping hand A Lockyer Valley farming family has been given a much-needed boost thanks to 24 generous John Deere staff members and Australia’s leading rural charity, Rural Aid. The Piggott family run an Awassi sheep cheesery at Grantham and pride themselves on their chemical-free, boutique products.

Di Piggot usually relies on family members to help wrangle the invasive lantana weed on her 160-acre property, but border closures prevented their month-long working bee this year.

“The little lambs eat the lantana but it’s toxic to them and they get really sick, so it’s really important we get it out,” Di Piggot said.

The final round of the Smart Farms Small Grants Program is now open.

The Smart Farms Small Grants program supports improved land management practices and on-farm biodiversity through sustainable agriculture projects that build the capacity and capability of farmers and landholders.

Organisations and individuals can now apply for grants to fund soil extension activities.

The Australian Government has increased grant amounts to between $100,000 ($50,000 per year over two years) and $250,000 ($125,000 per year over two years).

Successful soil extension activities will promote the value and benefits of soil testing.

Serpentine leafminer in LV Serpentine leafminer has been detected in celery, spinach and wombok crops in the Lockyer Valley.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries issue an agricultural alert last week.

Serpentine leafminer (Liriomyza huidobrensis) poses a serious economic threat to South East Queensland’s horticulture and nursery production plant industries.

Its larvae feed internally on plant tissue, particularly the leaf, causing distinctive mine damage which may appear as pale ‘squiggly’ or ‘serpentine’ patterns.

growth, and reduced crop yield and marketability.

Mines in the surface of leaf tissue are typically the first

signs. Leaf mines are usually white or pale green, with black and dried brown areas.

Leaf mines are typically

serpentine or irregular in shape and increase as the larvae mature.

Mining activity by

the larvae causes loss of healthy leaf tissue, affecting the plants ability to photosynthesize.

The damage caused when the fly lays its eggs, or during the mining process of the larvae, can lead to diseases caused by fungi and bacteria.

In severe infestations leaves can wilt and die, causing defoliation.

The greatest risk of pest spread is by people moving infested plant material, soil or packaging.

Inspect plants regularly for the presence of leaf mines.

Look for leafminer damage on a variety of plant species or unusual or severe leafminer leaf damage.

Industry and the public are urged to report suspected detections of serpentine leafminer to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on 13 25 23.

Lucky Gemini part of the family BRENDON PINGEL When Brendon Pingel was born, this 1978 Holden TD Gemini was already part of the family. His grandfather Eric Pingel was a salesman at Gatton Auto in 1978 and sold the car to his brother, Spencer, who had the car for many years until he had a stroke and was no longer able to drive.

It came into Brendon’s immediate family’s ownership when he was 12 years old.

Brendon has many great childhood memories of driving around in the Gemini with his family.

And as the kids grew up, they learned how to drive in the little wagon.

“Once I got my licence at 17 it became my daily driver,” Brendon said.

Even at one point operating his own car detailing business, the wagon was the perfect car for hauling around his detailing equipment in the back.

With a background in race car driving, it was only a matter of time before Brendon, now 35, started upgrade modifications. “This would be the 3rd time I have changed the intake system. Age 17- Original 1600 motor got a downdraft Weber upgrade, real lumpy cam and full exhaust system. Age - 33

Dad and I spent 9 months building the current 2L with twin 45mm side draft Weber’s. Age 35 - Quad motorcycle carbs straight off the Aussie Racing Car with custom manifold” Brendon said.

“It’s important to keep most of the original look of the Gemini,” Brendon said.

Tinted windows and mag wheels were a must to personalize that look.

The original 1.6lt engine was swapped out (but very wisely kept in storage for the future) with an upgraded, balanced, and blueprinted G200 single overhead cam 2.0lt version.

“It’s pushing up around 150-

160 horsepower,” Brendon said.

“For a car that only weighs in at around 850kgs, it’s quite a little goer!”

Calling in the help of a friend from his racing days, Brendon had a custom manifold made for the motor.

The race car fabricator manufactured it to suit quad carbs,

likely the only Gemini with this modification.

“It gives it a great custom look and adds a bit of excitement to the drive,” Brendon said.

Now that Brendon’s no longer in the detailing game, the boot is home to the start of an audio system. Housing two 12” subs and with many speakers throughout, it will make your hair stand on end.

The stand-out interior has been revamped to the highest standard and the wagon looks a treat.

Brendon said he only uses the Gemini as a weekender now.

“I love to get out as much as

possible on All Holden Days and weekend cruises with Gemini clubs,” he said.

Most of all, he loves to take it out whenever possible for track days to stomp on the pedal and get those quad carbs wide open for a blast.

Through the clubs and some investigating, Brendon’s found his Gemini is a rare one.

“This 43 year old TD Gemini wagon is possibly the second oldest wagon that is still registered and on the road today,” he said.

Credit to Brendon and the Pingel family for keeping the wagon in top condition.

It looks like it has just rolled out of the showroom.

Thursday 9th September at home we had 6 players in a game of Triples. Winners on the day were Ian Bradow, Phil Gregory and Neville Finlay. Runners up were Cindy Mills, John Greany and Colleen Heath.

Raffle went to Ian Bradow again.

On Saturday 11th September we had a visit by roughly 50 members of the Brisbane Rail Trail Users Group. With a bit of bowling and a sausage sizzle, all had an enjoyable day. We hope you come back again soon.

Sunday 12th September we had 12 players on the green with two games of triples: Winners on the day were Cindy mills, Robert Griffin and Linda Winkeler. Runners up were Neville Finlay, Lyn McWhirter and Wayne Thompson. Raffle went to Cindy Mills With a bit of luck and a continuation of no lockdown conditions we hope to continue our bowls program which includes A Grade and B Grade singles Championships. If you have not already done so, put your name on the board for inclusion. You can’t win if you are not on the list of players.

HAWKS IN GRAND FINAL Both the Gatton Hawks Women’s side and the Reserve Grade side have advanced to their respective grand finals after convincing wins in their preliminary finals matches last Sunday.

The Gatton Hawks Women’s side had gone undefeated all season until a shock loss against Warwick in their first finals match.

The loss forced the Women’s side into a do or die clash against Newtown to advance to the big dance, with Coach Dom Haak saying the 30-10 win was probably their best of the season.

“It was a good day, it was a bit of a blessing in disguise losing last week because I said all season we needed to lose one, and we turned it around today and

played really well,” he said.

“The biggest thing today was just our effort, it took a bit to get the team up this week because they were disappointed by the loss last week but they reacted really well.

In what is the ultimate revenge scenario, the Gatton Hawks women will again face Newtown in the grand final, the only team to have inflicted a loss against the powerhouse side.

“We deserve to make it the grand final so anything can happen from here,” Dom said.

The Gatton Hawks grand final day kicks off at 11:45am on Sunday at Clive Berghofer Stadium before the Reserve Grade grand final at 1 pm against the Wattle Warriors.

The women have been undefeated all season.
