BVRT maintenance supported by grant WEST Moreton Landcare would like to express our sincere thanks to Shayne Neumann, the Federal Member for Blair, for his assistance in securing a grant to assist our volunteers with maintenance work on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at Lowood. The grant helped with the purchase of two 4-stroke brush cutters, and some much needed fuel for the maintenance equipment used daily by volunteers, working along the trail. While current drought conditions list watering as one of our volunteers’ most frequent tasks, these dedicated people take great pride, and spend countless hours each week, maintaining the plants and mowing the grassed verges along a 4km section of the rail corridor. Response to Shayne Neumann DEAR Editor, I refer to the letter from Shayne Neumann MP in your edition dated 1st November, detailing the largesse of the Labor Federal Government to provide cost of living relief, in which he fails to acknowledge, it is not federal government money but OURS, the taxpayer! I cannot remember any consultation regarding the ten point plan, and while some people will believe they have benefited, others who cannot find a bulk billing doctor, do not have a child in childcare, are not renters but mortgage payers, and have seen their lending rate increase - 10 or is it 11 times since this ALP Government came to office, may think otherwise. Perhaps Mr Neumann can explain whether we are to see the promised

Once an overgrown fire hazard with waist high dry grasses, this particular section of the rail trail is fast developing into an attractive wildlife corridor. Birdwatchers and gardening enthusiasts, drawn

to this section of the rail trail by the ever increasing array of Australian native birds and plants, often report they are watched by curious lizards and the occasional koala perched high in the trees.

The well maintained trail also serves as an attractive entrance for hikers and bikers travelling in Lowood from the west. Kevin Lewis President, West Moreton Landcare

$275 reduction in electricity prices per year, compared to the price we were paying when Labor took office; how long the lunacy of Minister Bowen’s renewables policy, which is only increasing electricity prices will continue, or Government overspending causing the Reserve Bank to impose higher lending rates? Mr Neumann’s assurance that the Albanese Government and he are working hard to reduce the pressure on households is proving more hollow with every electricity bill we receive, every time we go to the supermarket or petrol station, and for the other cost of living pressures felt by us all, whether mortgage payer, renter, pensioner or self funded retiree. Yours faithfully, Alan Fry Laidley Heights

Police brief: sudden death Lockyer Waters

BY GRACE CRICHTON

STUDENTS had their brekkie sunny side up when Foodbank and Sunny Queen visited Grantham State School on November 9. The hunger-relief charity were touring in the ‘Sunny Queen Express’ to deliver food hampers to families in time for the school holidays. Grantham State School principal Leticia de Mey said the bacon and egg sandwich breakfast was a community event. “We’re very lucky that we’ve been able to have this and invite the whole community,” she said. “Foodbank has supported Grantham State School all year. “Our chappy is very involved within the Foodbank. “Each week he will collect from Foodbank a large box of bananas that we’re able to distribute at lunch time. “With that connection we were able to have this lovely breakfast through Foodbank and Sunny Queen.”

Foodbank corporate partnerships manager Sam Gallagher said 60 hampers were delivered to Grantham through the Food for Kids program. “The Food for Kids hampers run in the lead up to the

school holidays each year,” she said. “We have a school breakfast program during the school terms… but during the school holidays the families really need that extra help.”

Sunny Queen were on board, supplying the food and giving away squishy toy eggs for a fun egg and spoon race after breakfast. “Sunny Queen is our largest corporate impact partner and they’ve been supporting

Foodbank for a number of years,” Mrs Gallagher said. The 2023 Foodbank Hunger Report 2023 revealed 36% of Australian households experienced moderate to severe food insecurity in the last year.

POLICE are investigating after a woman was killed during a severe weather event in the Lockyer Valley area on November 10. Emergency services were called to the Qually Road property in Lockyer Waters following reports a woman had been struck by a tree. Paramedics treated the female patient in her 70s, who was in a critical condition with significant leg and head injuries, but sadly, the patient passed away on scene. Initial information indicated the woman was walking outdoors when the incident occurred. As of November 12 police reported it was an emerging situation and investigations were ongoing. Hail and wind batter Lockyer BY JACOB HAYDEN

LOCKYER Valley towns were coated in hail on Friday November 10 with significant damage caused to Energex’s electricity distribution network. Lockyer Valley State Emergency Services local controller Graham Wade said crews worked through 22 callouts for roof damage across Friday and Saturday. “Some were obviously more severe than others, and some were absolutely catastrophic,” Mr Wade said.

Mr Wade said the hail damage was centralised around the Crowley Vale and Laidley North area, with Gatton mostly untouched. “It was all hands on deck on Friday with the Toowoomba unit on standby to give them a hand,” he said. “Our crews are very well trained and they know their stuff, which makes operations of this scale a lot easier.” Mr Wade thanked the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System team from Toowoomba for their help. “I spoke to my boss and

Lockyer Valley, and also affected Somerset and Ipswich customers. “Crews worked through the night to assess and repair damage, and restored most customers progressively

Round five open for school leavers MEMBER for Nanango Deb Frecklington has announced round five of her Nanango Electorate Year 12 School Leavers Bursary is officially open. Mrs Frecklington said the $1,000 bursary was an important way to support the region’s school leavers as they make the next step in

their education journey. “It is always a major step for our Year 12 School Leavers who must travel away for TAFE, university or other training and this bursary is one way I can help support them on their pathway to further study,” she said. “The Bursary aims

to provide financial assistance with the costs associated with moving to their place of learning, tools, the purchase of books, IT or other necessary requirements.” Applications are open to Year 12 students who live within the Nanango Electorate and are due by January 22, 2024.

Grantham calendar supports Back to School initiative BY GRACE CRICHTON GRANTHAM has banded together once more to create the Grantham Community Calendar and to support a worthy cause. Each year Grantham Fuels creates the calendar with contributed photos from locals and the proceeds go to a charity. Money raised from the 2024 calendar will go to Lockyer Community Centre’s Back to School initiative. Grantham Fuels manager Linda Vanzelst said the shop had a community focus. “This year we’ve really been about the community,” she said. “The Grantham community has pulled together to look after our parks, keep them intact so that we’ve got places to meet. “That’s what this year’s really been about.” The shop has assisted small schools in the area with a 4c/L donation program this year and spon-

soring a student through the community centre is an extension of their support for local schools. The calendar received strong support from keen photographers, with 84 people submitting their photos

for consideration. Grantham resident Kev Kreis has contributed his photos every year since the first calendar for 2021. “I love the calendar, I’ve got it hanging up on the wall at home,” he said.

“I’m proud of the photos, for one, but also it’s a good cause. “It brings the community closer together. “Everyone’s getting together and getting into it.” November’s photographs

are dedicated to Stanley the dog, who regulars are well acquainted with from his post behind the counter, to celebrate his birthday month. Calendars are $24 and available from Grantham Fuels, while stocks last.

Potential for university hubs to service Somerset students FEDERAL Member for Blair Shayne Neumann has said Ipswich and the Somerset Region could be home to innovative new university study hubs under a $66.9 million initiative to roll out 34 new centres across the country.

The federal government will establish 20 new Regional University Study Hubs and 14 new Suburban University Study Hubs in the outer suburbs of major cities for the first time. These will be in areas

without a physical university campus and where the percentage of the population with university qualifications is low. Mr Neumann said this would make it easier for young people like those in his electorate who live

outside the major cities in regional and outer suburban communities to get a degree. “The postcode you live in shouldn’t be a barrier to getting a degree, and this opportunity could be life-changing for suburban,

regional and rural communities,” he said. The Department of Education has commenced a competitive application process to establish the first of up to 10 additional Regional University Study Hubs.

$5 million for Lowood to Fernvale

THE FERNVALE South Productivity Link will provide an inter-highway connecting road between Lowood and Fernvale with the widening and bitumen sealing of Muckerts Lane and McCulkins Lane, and a link between the two roads. The $5 million funding for the project was announced on November 11 through the Australian Government Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the funding would provide a huge safety and economic boost for the region. “This project will construct an alternative to the State-controlled roads and link some of the fastest growing areas in our region,” Cr Lehmann said. “This route will link Brisbane Valley Highway and Forest Hill Fernvale Road for the first time and will be around 2km shorter than travelling the highway. “It will also avoid the Fernvale town centre, which is a high traffic environment of around 8,676 vehicles per day.” Currently Muckerts Lane and McCulkins Lane are unsealed and extremely narrow in sections, and Muckerts Lane is the Somerset region’s busiest unsealed road with more than 200 vehicles per day. The upgrade to the lanes is hoped to reduce congestion and wear and tear on the road network by allowing heavy vehicles and other traffic to avoid the Brisbane Valley Highway, Forest Hill Fernvale Road, and the centre of Fernvale.

PROMISING Esk musician Amelia Walsh showcased her talents at the Montville Lane studio pop-up at the Somerset Civic Centre on November 3-5, recording two moving original pieces. Having a strong interest in writing and recording originally composed music, Amelia said she explored unique

sounds while recording her songs ‘ICU’ and ‘Trash’ at the pop-up. “For ‘ICU’, it’s a rock pop ballad, and it’s got a little bit of upbeat feel to the music and is going to have strings in the background,” she said. “‘Trash’ has a synth sound and sounds quite unique.” Brought up in a musical family, Amelia said she enjoys exploring various genres

and performing at gigs with her family. “My dad plays guitar and sings, my uncle plays bass guitar, and the rest of the family all play instruments,” she said. “I’m constantly changing who my favourite is, what my genre is.” Amelia said she’s working on four songs for an EP to be released in 2024.

Story of ‘Buck Wing’ takes flight

ASPIRING young author Nicholas Campbell met with Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan on November 2 to hand over his brand new book, ‘The Story of Buck Wing’. At 15 years old, ‘Buck Wing’ is Nicholas’ second book, and recounts the tale of a seabird’s journey. “It’s the story of a seabird and he lives in Currumbin at the Gold Coast, and he goes out looking for chips every day with Linda, his wife,

to feed their children,” Nicholas said. “He goes out and he gets trapped in the back of a truck. “The truck driver is Darren [named after Nicholas’ father], and he shuts the back of the truck and goes out to the Northern Territory and Buck’s got to find his way home.” Nicholas is again joined by his mother Belinda, who illustrated the story. “He’s a beautiful bird, so we’ve made the colours

really colourful,” she said. “The country towns are beautiful too, especially the drive through the rolling hills.” Nicholas said he loved seabirds. “They’re like a sign you’ve made it to the beach, when you see them,” he said. The book will be launched at Queen B’s Collective in Forest Hill at 9am on December 14, and copies can be purchased online.

century Dressed the part: students Half celebrations for Laidley Kindy go all in for village visit BY GRACE CRICHTON

A VISITING school embraced the olden days and dressed in period costume for their excursion to the Laidley Pioneer Village on November 10. Staines Memorial College Year 2 students donned aprons and braces for the educational tour of the village. Grade 2 teacher Suzanne Cilento said the visit was part of their lessons in technology. “They look back at how things have changed and how technology has changed the way that we live,” she said. The Redbank Plains school students learned about blacksmithing, woodworking, farming, and housekeeping from the village’s volunteers. Mrs Cilento said it was beneficial for the students to learn how previous generations played games and created entertainment in a time before digital screens.

“It’s good for kids to have that experience of what things were like a long time ago and in a simpler life where there wasn’t so much technology,” she said. “A lot of kids every day are in front of the screen.” Laidley Pioneer Village volunteer Ron Johnstone said they

loved having school groups visit. “Any school group here is great because it helps us to educate the younger generation to how our forebearers lived,” he said. “The fact that they’ve taken the extra effort to dress up is great.”

PAST, present and future kindergarteners and family are welcome to Laidley Community Kindergarten’s (LCK) 50th anniversary celebrations on Saturday November 18, at 9:30am. LCK committee vice president Jessica Logan said the kindy would have a relaxing community morning tea to commemorate the occasion. “We will be opening the time capsule [at 10am] which will have a little book and some pictures and things from our students both 10 and 20 years ago, so 2013 and 2003,” Mrs Logan said. “Those particular students have been invited, and whichever ones can turn up are going to read out what they wanted to be when they were at kindy, which will be super cute.” Mrs Logan said the LCK had nearly filled all spaces for next year. “There’s going to be 40 keen little threeand four-year-olds ready for their kindy year in 2024… which is amazing,” she said. “If you’d like to see what the kindy’s all about and share in our community spirit, please come along.” The LCK is located at 36 William Street. Health Notes by Ben Jackson - Pharmacist Your Lungs for Life - COPD Day - Nov 15th Some people struggle to breathe every day, sometimes all day every day. If you regularly run out of puff you may automatically think of asthma. However, there is another possible cause of shortness of breath. It has been estimated that 1 in 7 people over 40 have COPD – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD is a group of lung conditions that make it difficult to breathe because your airways have been narrowed. The 2023 theme for World COPD Day will be "Breathing is Life - Act Earlier" and takes place on November 15th. This year's theme aims to highlight the importance of early lung health, early diagnosis and early interventions. Keeping lungs healthy is an integral part of future health and it is now more important than ever to act sooner. We now know that there are many other factors besides tobacco smoking that can contribute to COPD and that it can start early in life and effect young individuals. In addition, we have now identified precursor conditions that can provide new opportunities for early diagnosis and prompt treatment. This campaign will focus on highlighting the importance of early lung health and how we can expand

the horizon of COPD prevention and treatment by acting earlier. This can include preventing early risk factors, monitoring lung health from birth, diagnosing COPD in a precursor state and providing treatment promptly. Differentiating between COPD and asthma is important to ensure the most appropriate treatment is given. One of the major differences relates to cough. While with asthma the cough is usually a dry, so-called nonproductive cough and occurs most often at night or after exercise; with COPD the cough is productive (that is: with plenty of phlegm and mucus) and usually occurs in the early morning. In terms of treatment, acute asthma attacks respond well to asthma puffers such as Asmol and Ventolin and can be controlled and effectively managed with the combination puffers like Seretide and Symbicort. COPD responds poorly to these medicines. The first treatments for COPD are usually medicines know as anticholinergic medicines – also given by inhalation. If you feel breathless doing simple activities like walking up a flight of stairs, it’s time to screen for COPD or see your health professional because you could have COPD.

Gatton Mitre 10 founder Steve Rule said it was the store’s first year of eligibility for the accolade and it was a testament to the team for upholding high standards. “There are a number of areas the award is assessed on that the team had to meet... including store standards, participation in community activities, sponsoring local events and the level that the staff are trained to,” Mr Rule said. “This was our first year of eligibility, so taking it out in

Residents reconnect at Ma Ma Creek BY JACOB HAYDEN

PAST and present Ma Ma Creekers reunited on Sunday November 12 to catch up and create new communal bonds. Former Ma Ma Creek Community Hall secretary June Evans organised the get-together, and has done so for around two decades. “I think I’ve been involved in contacting these people ever since I’ve been secretary,

which was about 20-25 years ago,” Mrs Evans said. Fellow organiser Glenys Sippel said the event aimed to get the community together, including people new to the area. “You never know when you’re going to rely on people in your community, so it is good to have those connections,” Mrs Sippel said.

Self-taught artist’s serene sea scapes not to be missed STUNNING realistic ocean scapes and larger-thanlife animal portraits take centre stage this month at Hypatia’s House. The ‘Out to Sea’ exhibition showcases the work of self-taught artist Bridget Harrison. Bridget grew up in South Australia in the Yorke Peninsula area. “That’s where my love of the ocean comes from,” she said.

The beauty of the ocean is captured in a series of detailed oil and water colour paintings of Sunshine Coast beaches. The ocean scapes are her first series in the mediums, but her talent belies her novice status. “This is my first lot of oil and water colour paintings that I’ve ever done,” Bridget said. Opposite the sea scape installation are several

large multimedia works, each a close up of an animals eye and profile. Bridget exhibited this series in South Australia 15 years ago. As a child, Bridget was surrounded by the beautiful artwork of her grandfather, a landscape artist. ‘Out to Sea’ is on until the end of November at Hypatia’s House, 151 Patrick St, Laidley. Sharing town’s heritage through art

LINVILLE is the place to be this weekend as the annual Linville Heritage & Arts Festival swings into action. The festival is a celebration of the village, its rich history, and tells its story through art. The weekend-long program has plenty on offer for locals and visitors alike. The Linville Art Prize will be one of the cornerstone events of the festival, inviting artists to paint Linville scenes on site and enter their work for judging. If you see a painter, say hello or pop down to the hall to see their works in one place. Artists’ paintings will be on display in the hall from 4:30pm to 8:30pm and the judging will take place at 4:30pm. On Saturday morning, enjoy Devonshire Tea in the hall with good old-fashioned homemade scones for a gold coin donation. Chainsaw artist Luke Sheehan is back for a third year to carve another extraordinary

State and national champion Gabby Wooler will be opposite the community hall demonstrating whip cracking and whip plaiting with her

father John Wooler several times on Saturday. Throughout the day you will find plenty of food and live music, plus you can take

a self-guided walking tour on Linville landmarks, or even take a horse-drawn carriage ride. Enjoy all-day dining and

live music at the famous Linville Hotel. Saturday’s capstone event is Angel Strings Chamber Orchestra Quintet’s concert under the stars in the Community Garden. It’s a chance to hear professional musicians play live in the peaceful atmosphere of the garden. On Sunday, the Festival Markets are on from 7am to 12noon. Come on down and see an expanded market inside and outside the hall. Check out the seedling stall at the shade house in the garden and enjoy a pancake breakfast in the garden. Witness local artist Susan McConnel paint an upright piano, or join mosaic artist Rosie O’Brien for a talk on her latest installation for the Community Garden. There are many more events and activities included in the festival program, so make Linville your destination this weekend. Visit linvilleprogress.com.au

Record share dividend for shareholders

THE SOMERSET Region Community Enterprise Ltd, the company behind your local Lowood-Fernvale Bendigo Community Bank, will reward their loyal shareholders with a record 12% share dividend in November. This milestone is a major benchmark for the community bank and a tribute to the shareholders for their foresight and investment in their local community. Company Chairman Aaron Heck said the dividend meant the bank could reinvest in the community. “This 2023 dividend means that our branch has now been able to reinvest some $1.4 million across the Somerset community, through grants, sponsorships and dividends to our shareholders,” he said.

PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED ABOVE: The bank team takes pride in building relationships with their clients. LEFT: Company chairman Aaron Heck said Lowood-Fernvale Bendigo Community Bank will reward their shareholders with a record dividend this month.

This achievement is the result of a successful year within the branch, including but not limited to: l Branch opening on a Saturday morning to meet the customers’ growing needs,

while other banks are closing their doors in the region. l An ATM that continues to provide an important service to both locals and visitors in the region. l Meeting the needs of a diverse and growing client base.

“Our bank team takes pride in building relationships with their clients, helping them to address their day to day, as well as longer term banking needs,” Mr Heck said. “This is especially valued as many are having to deal with

the opportunities and concerns posed by on-line banking, talk of cashless societies and the ever-present threat of banking and online scams.” The locally owned and managed Lowood-Fernvale Bendigo Community Bank

branch operates under a franchise arrangement with the Bendigo Adelaide bank. If you wish to learn more about your Community Bank, visit www.bendigobank.com. au/branch/qld/communitybank-lowood-fernvale

Volunteers keep community moving

WHEN Di Thompson left a full-time job she did not particularly enjoy, she knew that she wanted to do something meaningful with her time in retirement. “I have always volunteered in some capacity with whatever spare time I have available as I believe that we need to give something back to the community we live in,” she said. Di heard about local non-profit organisation STAR Community Services, and immediately signed up to become an owner-driver. Di shares her volunteering experience: What do you do in your volunteering role? As a volunteer owner-driver, I get to drive STAR’s elderly clients in my own car. This volunteer role is very special for so many reasons. I enjoy that my service is making such a big difference to other people’s lives. Many elderly live on their own but have the desire to be independent and not call on

their friends or relatives to drive them. By using community transport services like STAR, they can maintain their independence. They feel they are not inconveniencing anyone - I not only drive them to their doctors appointments, I take

them to the shops, to the hairdresser, to the swimming pool, or even to have coffee with a friend. They enjoy their outings, which keeps them connected to their friends and family. What does preparation for your volunteer role require?

PHOTO: STAR COMMUNITY SERVICES

Since I drive my own vehicle, I need to ensure my car meets all of STAR’s safety regulations. For example, it needs to be less than 10 years old and regularly serviced. As a driver, I complete CPR training every year and First Aid training every

couple of years. Thankfully, STAR looks after all the cost and organisation of all the training for all the drivers. I also get reimbursed for the mileage as per the ATO rate. Why do you enjoy most about volunteering?

For me, volunteering is an exchange of energy, and as a volunteer, I get as much out of volunteering as I give. I truly enjoy my conversations with the seniors who have exciting stories and a perspective on the world that can only come with experience. They are so thankful and express their appreciation very generously. I am grateful that I get to absorb all the niceness. Not a single day goes by when I don’t enjoy my work, hence I am able to give my 110%. STAR supports Ipswich seniors by offering a range of in-home services to help them live independently in their own homes. If you would like to support your community’s elderly, and have a few spare hours in your week, consider becoming a volunteer owner-driver with STAR. Local Charolais breeders recognised BY JACOB HAYDEN

CHAROLAIS breeders from across the Lockyer Valley, Brisbane Valley and Ipswich region celebrated on Saturday November 4 for the Charolais Society of Australia’s annual dinner at Oakes in Toowoomba. The dinner celebrated the end of the bull selling season, where awards were given to the winners of the Queensland Region 2023 Feedlot and Carcass Competition. Certificates were presented to the society’s long-standing members of 30 years or more. Among the recipients were RNJ Charolais from Rosewood, Karinda Charolais from Kumbia, and the Lockyer Valley’s Lilydale Charolais and Charnelle Charolais. Lilydale Charolais’ Ross Sticklen is the Queensland Region chairperson for the society and was ‘over the

“He found they went really well and decided to get in and register as a stud breeder. “Janeen and I have taken the stud on since he passed, and we’ve got no intention of closing it down so we’ll keep going as well.” Charnelle Charolais’s

Graham Blanch said the certificate was a surprise, but an honour to receive. “It’s one thing to recognise that, but it means more to me to go out and share genetics, share your experience and share what you know to the younger generation,” Mr

Blanch said. “It’s 30 years of ups and downs, and it’s nice to be recognised, but you’ve got to keep going out there and push for the integrity of what you’re breeding.” Mr Sticklen said the Feedlot and Carcass Compe-

tition went from strength to strength, with 320 entrants in 2023, more than double 2022’s entries. “The Charolais Queensland Region Carcass Competition is in the top end of the largest carcass competitions in Australia,” he said. Mr Sticklen said the steers and heifers weight gain was very similar. “Traditionally steers put more weight on and that’s what makes them so popular, but in the Charolais breed the heifers produce just as well as the males do,” he said. “The highest weight gain for a single steer was 2.699kg a day [over 100 days], and the highest weight gain for a heifer was 2.709kg.” Mr Blanch thanked Greg Nicholson from Black Duck Charolais for sponsoring the youth section of the competition. “Any Charolais breeder under 25 years of age was given special prizes for weight gain and carcass,” he said.

Nissan release Qashqai e-POWER NISSAN will soon introduce its second model to feature its innovative e-POWER technology, with the first Nissan Qashqai e-POWER vehicles set to arrive in Australia in 2024. Nissan’s e-POWER technology will feature on the well-equipped flagship Ti grade. The Qashqai’s e-POWER system consists of a high-output battery that is complemented by a variable compression ratio 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine generating 116kW, power generator, inverter and 140kW electric motor of similar size and power output as found in Nissan’s LEAF electric vehicle. The petrol engine generates electricity, which can be transmitted via the inverter to the battery pack, the electric motor or both, according to

Nissan’s e-POWER technology will feature on the well-equipped flagship Ti grade.

the driving scenario. What sets this powertrain apart is that the electric motor delivers power directly to the wheels, so its response is instant and linear. The new Qashqai’s

e-POWER system was conceived to deliver a pleasurable, effortless and smooth driving experience, without the need to recharge. At the heart of Nissan’s Qashqai e-POWER system is

a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-charged variable compression 116kW petrol engine. First used by Nissan’s premium brand Infiniti, the engine’s variable compression capability is a unique

feature in an internal combustion engine and allows it to adjust compression ratio to balance performance and economy, depending on the engine load. The advantage of the

e-POWER system is that the engine runs within its optimal range and best compression ratio. Thanks to the unique powertrain, there’s no delay in the delivery of torque as can be the case in a traditional hybrid, where there can be a sudden rise in engine speed as it responds to the accelerator demand for immediate acceleration. The instant response of the e-POWER system delivers a unique and exciting driving experience. To maximise performance, in high acceleration or highspeed situations, the energy management control unit within the e-POWER system can send the power generated by the 1.5-litre engine directly to the electric motor, via the inverter, to bolster the electricity supply which is coming from the battery.

THE LOCKYER AND SOMERSET INDEPENDENT

MOORE WEEKLY STARS November 13-19, 2023 ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

Expect some highs and lows this week! Venus promises improved relations with a partner, friend or colleague. But the Sun-Uranus opposition highlights hiccups in your financial management in the form of a large bill, an unexpected expense or a retrospective tax debt. Which reinforces the importance of having a smart savings plan and a well-stocked emergency fund. So strive to be less impulsive and extravagant, and more cautious and thrifty.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

Bulls prefer to plod along in a methodical fashion but, this week, you could experience unexpected dramas and disruptions! The Sun opposes Uranus (in your sign) so daily life will be rather unpredictable. If you prioritise and are mentally flexible, then you’ll handle the hurly-burly with less stress and strain. Romantic relationships and platonic partnerships are also in a state of New Moon flux. The more adaptable you are, the better the final outcomes will be.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

You could become anxious, as your daily routine is disrupted in some way. Or your enthusiasm for a work project could overtake your ability to knuckle down and get the job done. If you promise more than you can deliver, then other people will just end up disappointed. So slow down and listen to the wisdom of your inner voice – it will point you in the direction that’s right for you. The weekend favours strenuous physical activity in the great outdoors.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

This week a child, teenager, friend or lover could shock you by making a surprise move, or a group project could suddenly veer off in an unexpected direction. If you keep your adaptability muscles well-flexed, then you’ll adjust to the constantly changing landscape accordingly. Peace planet Venus is visiting your home/domestic zone, so stop sulking and stewing over a perceived slight from a family member. It’s time to cooperate, compromise and sympathise!

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

Leos love to be Top Cat but this week you need to ask yourself: “Am I leading others or just bossing them around?” If you power ahead without considering other people, then you’ll create unnecessary chaos and disruption. Do your best to accommodate the needs of those around you. Life will also run more smoothly if you proactively incorporate a spiritual ritual into your domestic routine. Something like yoga, tai chi, chanting, meditation or creative visualisation.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

When it comes to the way you think, blast out of a boring rut and jump into an exciting new phase. Use your imagination and think outside the box. The Sun, New Moon and Mars are activating your communication zone, so stop avoiding issues and start discussing what you really want and need. You can’t expect other people to magically read your mind! For some clever Virgos, a joint venture or creative online project has the potential to really fly.

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22) Your patron planet Venus is transiting through your sign which boosts your natural Libran charm, but it can also increase your obsession with perfection. With the Sun, New Moon and Mars marching through your self-esteem zone, it’s time to boost your confidence, be the authentic you, and celebrate your so-called flaws! As poet (and birthday great) Marianne Moore observed (and Morticia Addams would agree): “Your thorns are the best part of you.”

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) This week the Sun, New Moon and Mars are transiting through your sign, and the Sun-Uranus opposition could disrupt relationships and rattle your Scorpio resilience. But it’s time to bounce back, as you demonstrate (and celebrate) your strengths – including courage and persistence. Your motto is from birthday great, painter Georgia O’Keeffe: “I’ve been terrified every moment of my life – and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.”

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21) Sagittarians can be feisty folk. But don’t allow yourself to be drawn into a heated exchange this week (especially involving colleagues, clients or customers). It would be better to watch the fireworks from the sidelines. With the Sun, New Moon and Mars in your privacy zone, slow down and chill out as you relax, rejuvenate and contemplate. After some soulful reflection and quality ‘me-time’ you’ll start to see things from a refreshingly different perspective.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) It’s time for an unexpected pivot! Clever Capricorns should examine all possibilities, especially ones that come from left field. With the Sun, New Moon and Mars in your hopes-and-wishes zone, it’s important to have ambitious long-term goals that you’re working towards. You’ll have to be patient though, as you focus on bringing your dreams down to earth via a practical plan. Then – when everything is in place – you’ll know the perfect time to pounce.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18) The Sun/Uranus opposition suggests a house move, family fiasco, uninvited guests dropping in or some other kind of domestic drama. And some Aquarians could experience disruptions at work. Whatever happens, strive to get the balance right between your public life and your private responsibilities. The planets also push you to reinvent a professional relationship. Just be careful you don’t get carried away and throw the baby out with the bathwater.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20) Are your aspirations for the future ambitious enough? The current stars favour ruminating over big-picture ideas. And there’s no room for false modesty or passive Piscean procrastination as you enjoy talking, texting, posting, promoting, socialising and circulating. Uranus stimulates your thought processes and encourages you to come up with a cracking plan, and then pursue it. An unwelcome surprise could unsettle you, so hold tight and expect the unexpected! A great week of bowls except our Friday night game, three weeks in a row we are washed out by rain. We will soldier on. CRICKET DAVIS SHIELD In the season opener, the Lockyer youth team made a miraculous comeback to open their season’s account. Beaten twice by Warwick last year, the quest for revenge looked difficult after being bundled out for 77 on a lively Forest Hill track. Only Captain, Ethan Simpson managed double figures. However, with blistering bowling and fielding. led by Hayden Sippel with 5-15 and Ash Taber with 3-23, the Lockyer boys had them all out for 50. A great confidence booster to start. LOCKYER A GRADE Fixtures were disrupted by the Friday night storms. Forest Hill, 6-162 def Helidon 9-161. In a match which looked even on paper, turned out to be so. Helidon, through Ray McBride on 55 and Dale Samuelson 24, helped the Heat to a competitive but getable score. Reece Reiser took 2-21. The Goats, in reply took nearly all their overs and the loss of 7 wickets to get there, but came away with a deserving win through the bat of Idrios Wiggins 44 and Drew Stafford on 41. In something of a surprise, Mulgowie toppled ladder leaders Ropehill. Batting first, the Mulgas put on 9-214, through Alex Emmerson on 81 and Scott Davenport on 41. Ropehill had

The Mulgowie win condenses the ladder, with all six sides still a chance of a top three finish. QLD COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET – SCHAEFFER SHIELD The Valley Vikings provided three members of the South East Queensland Team, Brock Zischke, Zeke Kugel and Regan Hoger, which played two fixtures in Toowoomba. The first game versus Darling Downs was incomplete after the storm hit. In the second game on Saturday, SEQ 6-274 def Wide Bay 8-237. Vikings Captain, Reggie Hoger did well with a quick 33 batting, and was the leading wicket-taker with 3 wickets. A South Queensland side will be announced in due course. VALLEY VIKINGS No play at Tivoli due to wet ground, which lost the opportunity to advance up the ladder. Soccer in the summer ahead of renewed season BY GRACE CRICHTON

LAIDLEY Soccer Club have nearly wrapped their Summer 6s program, a shortened trial season to get the club back up and running. Club president Sam Lyon said Summer 6s was a mini

casual competition to garner interest for a 2024 season. “It’s from ages six to an under 12s team and they play between 15 and 20 minute halves, depending on their age group,” she said. “It’s a bit of a round robin comp in the age groups.” The season began on

October 8 and attracted 70 kids. “There’s so many kids,” Lyon said. “It’s been such a great turn out and the response from parents has been really positive.” It gave kids and parents a chance to get back into the

sport before committing to a full season next year, when the Laidley club intends to join the Toowoomba and Darling Downs region for interclub competitions. The club is reforming with a new committee at the helm after they had to suspend their most recent season.

“We do need more people to join the committee if we want to be able to have a successful 2024,” Lyon said. “If we’re going to have a season, we just need people to step up and get involved. “It’s not hard work, everyone’s got their little jobs, they get them done,

and it comes together. “As it goes on and we’ve all learned what we’re doing and how to do it, it’s all come together really well. “We just need people that are passionate about it, or just want it to continue for the kids. “Laidley needs it.”

Kilcoy’s Blake Weaver shoots his shot for Australian Cup

KILCOY’S Blake Weaver spent ten days in late October representing southeast Queensland at the 2023 Australian Eight Ball Championships in Albury. Weaver said the competition was ‘unreal’ and he met a lot of talented pool players. “My team made semi-finals where we got knocked

out,” Weaver said. “I came 16th overall in the stats for the Australian Cup, which is pretty good.” Weaver competed in the open singles, doubles and AEBF Plate Open Grade where he made it to the third round. As part of the Queensland SEQ team, Weaver won 27 and lost 18

games. “I’m pretty happy with that for my first time,” he said. “I surprised myself, I didn’t think I would have shot 30%, let alone shooting 60%. “I learned that it’s a very long tournament and not to get frustrated with yourself… you need to stay

mentally prepared for the whole tournament.” Weaver thanked the Kilcoy Eight Ball Association for their support “It was great to have the pool club and everyone behind me, I had some family come down which was great,” he said. “The pool club did a raffle and we had spon-

sors from around town to contribute prizes, which helped get me down there, which made a massive difference. “Two weeks off work and travelling across the countryside is not cheap.” Weaver said he had his fingers crossed to return in 2024. “It’s not going to be

easy-going, there are some incredible players,” he said. “They named an Australian team from the Australian Cup, and I was only a couple of points off actually making that. “It was an awesome competition, and there were plenty of cold beers which was awesome too.” JACOB HAYDEN

RATTLING IN IRELAND BY JACOB HAYDEN

FERNVALE AFL player Paul Macknamara will add an Irish twist to his footy skills as he looks forward to the 2024 International Ireland Tour. The Brisbane Valley Rattlers AFC player was recently selected to represent Australia in the Masters Mens 50s team after competing for the titles at a Sunshine Coast carnival. Macknamara said he had to adapt his play for the tour and hoped he had the luck of the Irish on his side. “It’s a composite rules between AFL and Gaelic football,” he said. “We use a round ball, so it’s not the usual AFL ball… it’s a bit smaller than a

soccer ball. “You’re only allowed so many steps before you have to bounce or handball, so there’s little rules like that that are different.” Gaelic football also uses a net similar to soccer, instead of AFL’s goal posts. “Trying to get your head around the rules when you’re not actually playing the game will be a little bit tricky, but we’re going to have plenty of training coming up though,” Macknamara said. Macknamara had a history in both AFL and tennis. “I used to play football down in country Victoria with Kyabram, and I hadn’t played for 20 years and then happened to be walking past the oval down here where the Rattlers are,” he said.

“I got talked into having a game last year, and then played again this year.” In 2015 he represented Australia in tennis, playing for the Australian Over 40s team in Türkiye. “That was good fun,” Macknamara said. “I’ve now become a dual international representative.” Macknamara said he couldn’t do the tour without the support of his wife Amanda. “She’s a local naturopath at Natura-Sanat Naturopathy and has designed a health program to make sure I’m in peak physical condition come March,” he said. Macknamara will play in two tests on March 9 and 16 and will spend St Patrick’s Day in Dublin.
