ACCORDING to the Leukaemia Foundation’s latest research, many Australians living with blood cancer, particularly those in regional and remote areas, are under as a result of their diagnosis and treatment.
Nearly half (43 per cent) of those diagnosed experienced out-of-pocket treatment costs totaling hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars.
Regional patients and their loved ones often need to travel long distances or relocate to a capital city to access lifesaving treatment
experience.
As a result, some have had to sell assets including their house or car to pay for treatment, with others using charity food boxes and turning to charities like the Leukaemia Foundation for support.
With blood cancer incidence on the rise, and more Australians than ever and practical support, the Leukaemia Foundation has launched the 25th anniversary of World’s Greatest Shave to help raise vital funds.
Funds raised will also help research scientists continue their search for better ways to diagnose and treat blood cancer more effectively.

Schools play such a vital role in shaping the entire community and I hope you enjoy this insight through the gates and into the lives of the people inside.
On a personal note, it was my honour and delight to be my sister’s bridesmaid at her wedding on Friday
We urge all Australians to join us in celebrating the 25th anniversary of World’s Greatest Shave by signing up to shave, cut or colour their hair in support of the growing number of Australians diagnosed with blood cancer every day.

I would like to encourage our readers to send in their own wedding photos for publication in The Independent, and spread the love a little further.
Passing the ‘Pub Test’ TO THE layperson who may not be up to speed with State and Federal legislation or Council bylaws, we have invented a process called the ‘Pub Test’.
It’s a pretty simple idea but relies heavily on the common-sense that most of us believe we have, whether we choose to discuss matters at the local bar or not.
When this theory is applied to the development application for Stage 2 of the Rocket Engine Testing
facility at Helidon, then a few discussion topics stand out:
Firstly, there are no voices in favour of the proposal, and some 90 objecting submissions to Council.
As well, there are no addi-
region.
In the planning scheme, the ‘Desired Environmental Outcomes’ require that the environment is ‘protected and enhanced’.
In this case, the environment is put at serious risk from air, soil, and water pollution.
is ignored, along with wastewater and stormwater management issues, and noise levels far exceed prescribed tolerances.
The facility is located unbelievably close to living breathing communities and surrounded by fragile bushland, as opposed to some remote region with little or no risk to humans and wildlife, which is the international standard for similar projects.
So, are there actually any choices to be made?
Ultimately, legalities aside, making a decision about an issue is a matter of weighing up the pros and cons of that thing, whether it be in the pub or a Council chamber.
When the cons outweigh the pros then that matter, in this case a development application, must be rejected.

Confronting trauma with racehorses
BY JACOB HAYDEN
ISAAC Adams is helping defence families and veterans work through their adversities with the help of his herd of horses.
A veteran himself, Mr Adams said he had his own challenges with mental health after returning from overseas.
“I remember talking to some old veterans in nursing homes when I was trying to bloke said to me ‘when you get to my age and you’re staring at these four walls and that ceiling, you can’t run away from the problems you have in your life’,” Mr Adams said.
He said racehorses had a kinship to defence veterans.
Horses Ace and Kruezer had raced in NSW and along the coast, while Koda was a mixed bred who was destined for dog food.
“I like having her as part of the program because people will often bag the racing industry and say there’s so
much cruelty – which I’m not saying there isn’t – but all these racehorses come from very good stables and they’re very loved and well looked after, but Koda is from a private home and had a horrendous life,” Adams said.
“You can’t just pigeonhole an industry and say it’s their fault, and I think that happens
in the defence space as well.”
On Saturdays, Mia (14), Piper (11), and Zahlee (8) who each lost their fathers, visit Mr Adams’ Atkinsons Dam property where they work through movements with the horses.
“I’m using the horses and the interaction, and their motivation to connect with that
horse, as a way of helping them work through something,” Mr Adams said.
“I want to help kids, because they are the people that defence doesn’t employ, but they have to deal with the product and the outcomes.
Mr Adams said both children and veterans are faced with confrontation when
standing opposite a horse.
“If they’re not in the zone and they’re not present the horse will just go ‘no, I’m not working with you, you’re not working with me’,” he said.
“They’re not machines, they’re a being with their own temperament and emotion and you’ve got to work with that horse and take a
leadership role.”
Mia said she has become program.
“Because with the horses what you’re doing or it’s just not going to work.”

Westpac Gatton branch closing its doors in three months
WESTPAC customers of Gatton and surrounds received a letter last week notifying them of the closure of the Gatton Branch, scheduled for May 12, 2023.
The closure is the latest in a series across the region, including National Australia Bank closures last year in Esk, Laidley and Rosewood.
A Westpac spokesperson
said the closure was due to decreasing branch visits and rising popularity of digital banking.
“Our service approach is responding to customer preference,” they said.
“That’s why we’re investing in digital services so our customers can bank with us anywhere, at any time.”
Gatton resident Therese Barnes said she had
banked with Westpac since 1978 and with the Gatton branch since 1985.
“I do not do mobile banking, I do not do internet banking, and that’s probably why we haven’t been scammed,” she said.
“Westpac have been really great over the years… the staff help everyone, they are so helpful.
“It’ll be missed, I tell you, by those dribs and drabs of
people that have problems... and the staff help.”
She said she was not sure if she would stay with Westpac after the announcement.
“Westpac doesn’t seem to care about their customers anymore… I was thinking about moving right out and going with another bank,” Ms Barnes said.
“Here we have a couple to choose from, which
Gatton is lucky for.”
Gatton Post Shop will take on over-the-counter transaction banking services through Bank@Post.
“For those who are new to Bank@Post or digital banking, or may require more assistance with the changes, we provide dedicated support and education to make the transition easier,” the Westpac spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said current employees would career opportunities within the Westpac Group.
“Where an employee doesn’t secure a role to stay with Westpac Group, tailored career transition support available to help them secure employment elsewhere in the local community,” they said.

Feel the Algalrhythms

The exhibition opened on Friday February 10 with a
in residence at Kings Island near Tasmania in 2019 where she took around 3,000 reference photos.
“I found some kind of
narrative of the lifecycle of kelp, punctuated with the bones and carcasses of which looked literally torn from the sky,” she said.
“It looked really violent, but full of movement.”
She then recreated images
using textiles including dyed upholstery, leather and yarn, and employed heat guns, glue and boiling techniques to create her art.

“If we know where threatened species live, it’s much easier to identify and effectively address their key threats,” Mr Oke said.
You’ll also learn how to distinguish between the scratches and scat of koa-
las and other animals. The workshop is free, and will include a short walk to look at koala food trees and search for signs of koalas nearby.
Participants should wear enclosed shoes, and bring a hat.

Treasure trove of gems in Gatton
THE HIGHLY popular Gatton Gem Show returns to the Shire Hall on Saturday February 18.
Run by the Gatton Lapidary Club, the hall will be full to the brim with a wide array of crystals, minerals, fossils, gemstones, and jewellery.
Gem show co-ordinator and lapidary club member
Leon Steinhardt said they are expecting 90 vendors, both locally and from wider southeast Queensland.
“On the polished stone side of things, there’s everything from simple tumble stones for kids… right through to big polished specimens,” he said.
“There’s all shapes and sizes of polished stones.
“Then there’s polished stones set in jewellery, like opals put to a cabochon [domed] shape.
“There’s always quite a few people there with nice, precious opal.”
The gem show is a perfect place to expand the collection of any budding geologist. There will be various mineral and fossil specimens from around the world.
“One thing you’ll see most of is crystals,” Leon said.
“Crystals and crystal clusters.”
Leon said many people are unfamiliar with lapidary but since running the gem show for the past four years, he’s found plenty of people have
an interest in rocks.
“A lot of people don’t know what lapidary is,” he said.
“It’s shaping and polishing stones, that’s the simple explanation.
“It goes right from simple little tumble stones in a tumbler, right through to the multifaceted gem stones.
“One thing I’ve found working with this is people generally have an interest
in rocks and especially the sparkly, coloured ones.
“A lot of kids love rocks too.”
With free entry, everyone is encouraged to come in and have a look.
“We are the only gem show in southeast Queensland to have free entry,” Leon said.
“We just leave it open and you can walk in and walk out.”

Long life of farming and service
BY GRACE CRICHTON
AT 96 years old, Coral Kammolz is an active member of the Lockrose Indoor Bowls Club, Senior Citizens, and has led a full life of farming, friendships, and family.
Coral Emily Blake was born on August 20, 1926 at Rosewood.
She was the second of ten children to Isaac and Edith Blake.
“When we were young, we didn’t get out much,” Coral said.
“The only time we got out was when we had to go to Rosewood to the dentist and that was by horse and sulky.
“It was quite a drive in, rough roads and that, but that was the only time we went into town.”
She went to Ashwell State School, a four and half mile walk from their home across the paddocks.
“You’d have to watch out for the bulls,” she said.
“Bull over that side and a bull this side, and they wanted to come together.
“We’d have to hurry up and get through the fence and
Her early years in the country instilled a long and deep love for farm work and the country.
After leaving school, she worked on a neighbour’s week and at 17 she became a waitress at a Lowood Café.
In June 1944, Coral decided to enlist as a member of the Australian Women’s Land
Army.
The land army was formed to combat rising labour shortages in the farming sector during the Second World War.
She was 18 years old.
“I was a farmer, and I worked on the farm before that,” she said.
She was posted to Humphrey, not far from Mundubbera, on a mixed farm with a married couple.
“I got just what I wanted, a young married couple,” she said.
“They were very good, like mum and dad.
“We milked the cows, helped the boss split posts and fence, whatever was to do on the farm.”
In 1995, she was presented an ‘Australia Remembers’ medal at the unveiling of the new war memorial at Hatton Vale alongside Mildred Hodgson of Laidley and Irene Maslen of Fernvale.
All three women served in the Australian Women’s Land Army during WWII.
At war’s end, June 1945, she returned to Lowood and her waitressing job.
It was here she met her future husband, Edwin Kammolz.
During an interval at
the local pictures, Eddie came into the café for a milkshake.
They were married on November 1, 1947 by Pastor L. Doehler at Lockrose Lutheran Church.
They were blessed with
a family of four children, Dianne, Jennifer, Karen, and Adrian.
“Eddie was a farmer and he loved working tractors, working on the farm, but he didn’t like milking cows,” Coral said.
“I don’t think he ever
milked a cow and I loved milking cows.”
Coral loved farm work, chipping onions, milking cows, but when it came to loading hay on a trailer that was another subject.
Coral and Eddie’s sister Myrtle were given the potentially dangerous task of tramping hay.
“Myrtle and I had to tramp the hay when he had a load of hay,” Coral said.
“He’d fork it up on the trailer and we’d have to tramp it down so he wouldn’t lose it going home.
“And of course Myrtle and I, neither of us liked getting out on the edge in case we
Outside of the farm, Coral loved dancing, travelling, and indoor bowls.
She joined the Lockrose Indoor Bowls Club in 1976.
“And I’ve been playing ever since… and I still love it,” she said.
She loves the friendship, the people, and is also very competitive.
“Being able to get down there and get a bowl near that little white kitty, you know, get your shot, that’s the most important thing,” she said.
“I just love bowls.”
Eddie and Coral loved going to old time dances.
“I loved dancing too when I was younger,” Coral said.
“My husband and I used to go around with another little group and we’d teach dancing, old-time dancing, all around the schools around the area.”
If her mother’s longevity is anything to go by, Coral will keep busy with bowls and Senior Citiz for some time yet.
“My mum lived to 103, so I’ve got a while to catch her yet,” she said.
“Whether I’ll make it or not I don’t know, but I get up in the morning and thank the good Lord I’m still here.”

Volunteers bring campdraft close to completion
BY JACOB HAYDEN
THANKS to the tireless work of volunteers at every Saturday’s working bee, Gatton Campdraft Associations’ (GCA) grounds are drawing close to completion.
The GCA plans to have the grounds ready for their threeday event on May 12-14.
President Scott Haley said GCA had booked two events for 2022, but had to cancel
“There was 1500mL of water across the whole site,” he said.
The GCA has been approved for several grants, but
the site would not be where it is today without the work of volunteers.
Former president Mick Brennan said thousands of
hours of volunteer work has gone into preparing the grounds and the mezzanine.
“While all the grants money is good, we still need the
man-power,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of help from members and campdraft competitors - there’s chippies, plumbers, builders and electricians who have given their time for nothing.
Other planned improvements include a ramp for the mezzanine viewing area and raised storage space for the protection of equipment
Mr Brennan said the GCA would do what it could to

the whole grounds, and while it looks alright now if you get 10mL of rain on it it will get slippery,” Mr Brennan said.
“It’s not suitable to compete on, in campdrafting the most important thing is your arena, if you can send everyone home in one piece you’ve had a good weekend.”
Mr Haley said he hoped to fully utilise the grounds when they were ready.

The beekeepers’ battle against the destructor
BY JACOB HAYDEN
THE DEPARTMENT of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has decided to make Queensland a varroa mite biosecurity zone
The new biosecurity rules mean beekeepers can move bees into Queensland from other states or territories (apart from NSW) without a permit, if they are declared free from varroa mite.
Zabel Beekeeping Australia co-owner Russell Zabel said the varroa mite is an exotic, minute arachnid from Asia which evolved over a century and now predates on European honey bees.
it sucks out the juice of the larva, pupae and adults,” Mr Zabel said.
Nine months ago it was detected in Newcastle, placing the Australian beekeeping industry on high alert.
“The government have sentinel hives around ports in Australia where they are placed to detect the entry of mites like varroa destructor,” Mr Zabel said.
“There’s red zones around Newcastle and a few other places, and they’ve destroyed about 20,000 hives of European honey bee already by euthanising them and burning the product.
“It’s a big income loss for these beekeepers… they are getting compensation but only at cost value.”
Mr Zabel said the mite would add.another layer of problems on the beekeeping industry.
Thankfully for the Zabels, native bees are not under threat from varroa mite.
“They are ideal for pollination of macadamias, avocados, blueberries,” Mr
Zabel said.
“If or when the varroa mite goes beyond the red zone, beekeepers may give up and throw it in, and acquire native bees as a new hobby.”
‘Good
to continue for Australian agriculture
FOOD and agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank’s Australia Agribusiness Outlook 2023 suggests it is shaping up to be another strong year for the agricultural sector.
The report said beef, dairy, grain, oilseeds and canola prices all hit excellent levels’.
Report lead author, RaboResearch general manager Australia and New Zealand Stefan Vogel said 2023 was likely to deliver good prices in an environment of high costs and global recession.
“Favourable weather conditions in 2022 – with much of the east coast having received plentiful rainfall, even too much in some cases – have provided good soil moissupplies for irrigation,” Mr
Vogel said.
“And while the rainfall outlook for 2023 isn’t as high, this should also mean less weather disruptions for the sector.
“This sets the scene for another positive year of farm production in 2023.”
Mr Vogel said cost pressures will continue to weigh on the farm sector with costs forecast to sit above historic averages.
“A return to the highs seen in fertiliser prices last year is unlikely.
“Our meat and fruit exports in Australia rely on refrigerated containers and their rates still remain very high..
“Ag businesses need to continue to plan early and we will still see delays in delivery of machinery and other farm inputs.”

Byron said.

“It still had remnants of hay bales in the tray,” Byron said.
Byron’s passion for cars was a natural evolution growing up being taken around to
car shows, drag racing and car meets by his Ford enthusiast parents.
Ashley said the XH was a great starter car for his son to learn the ins and outs of restoring cars, without spending a bucket load of money.
I think the passion and motivation from young Byron is great to see.
The future of historic cars will be kept alive with young minds learning the ropes from their fathers.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS
February 13-19, 2023 ARIES
This week romance is in the air, but the energy is behind the scenes suggesting a private, magical Valentine’s Day. (“Romance is the glamour which turns the dust of everyday life into a golden haze” – Carolyn Gold Heilbrun.)
Single Rams – subtle signs and unexpected synchronicities could lead you to your true love, so keep your intuition well-tuned. When it comes to work, a long-term goal or a group project requires plenty of hard graft to get it off the ground.
TAURUS
Have you got a pile of projects that you’ve and Saturn boost motivation and concentration, so you can bring a project to a conclusion. Don’t waste the opportunity! With Venus and Neptune hooking up in your hopesand-wishes zone, you’re set for an amorous Valentine’s Day. Romantic music, stylish surroundings and gourmet food are calling.
or a passionate Piscean.
GEMINI
Gregarious Geminis love to chat, so this Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to tell loved ones how much you really care. Inspiration for the week is from birthday great, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono (born on February 18, 1933): “The regret of my life is that I have not said ‘I love you’ often enough.” Saturday’s Mercury/ Jupiter connection is fabulous for communication, education, travel, commerce, business, philosophical discussions and future planning.
CANCER
your partner can share together. Then put time, effort and hard work into making that dream come true. (“Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but of looking outward together in the same direction” – Antoine St Exupery.) Singles – with romance planet Venus in your travel zone, love is likely with someone from another country or culture. Alternatively, you could meet them while one of you is on holiday.
LEO
When it comes to romance, marriage and close friendships, Saturn is constantly reminding you about your current duties and responsibilities. But, this week, make sure you have plenty of fun. Your quote for Valentine’s Day is from writer George Sand: “There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved.” Saturday favours partnerships, communication, education, travel and international connections, as you initiate projects with passion and enthusiasm.
VIRGO
Whether you’re attached, searching for your soulmate, or happily single, Valentine’s Day that love really does make the world go binds us all together. Saturday’s Mercury/ Jupiter link highlights your natural ability to think of a fabulous idea, do the research that’s required, and then act on it. When you walk your talk (with Virgo versatility) you’re unstoppable!
LIBRA
At the moment, with taskmaster Saturn moving slowly through your romance zone, love is a very serious business. So your quote for Valentine’s Day is from writer William Barclay: “Love always involves responsibility, and love
character, depth and substance. A philosopher (with a romantic soul) who can last the distance.
SCORPIO
love, resist the urge to be overly controlling. Attached Scorpio – avoid the temptation to be bossy at home. Give your spouse more space. Singles – stop looking for love in all the obvious places. Write a wish-list of the important qualities you desire in a dream partner. Then sit back and wait for the magic to happen. As actress Loretta Young observed: “Love isn’t
SAGITTARIUS
With dynamic Mars travelling through your partnership zone, prepare for a bold and beautiful Valentine’s Day. Coupled Sagittarians – why not initiate a special romantic and step out of your comfort zone. So, your motto is from Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu: “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
CAPRICORN
Focus your attention on your lover, as you give them the right royal romantic treatment this Valentine’s Day. Singles … love and work are linked. However, when it comes to money, are Saturn conjunction encourages you to work persistence. Be inspired by birthday great Michael Jordan: “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
AQUARIUS
Don’t take your partner – or potential partner – for granted! If you do, then your neglected lover may go looking for attention elsewhere. (“Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone. It has to be made like bread, remade all the time, made new.” – Ursula Le Guin.) So, plan something uniquely special this Valentine’s Day. Single Aquarius – it doesn’t matter what a potential partner looks like, or how much money they make, you need a romantic mate who is also a friend.
PISCES
Attached Fish – you’re feeling extra romantic as you lavish attention (and money) on your partner, wear your heart on your sleeve or play out a secret fantasy with your lover. Single Pisces – don’t base your self-esteem on whether you have a partner. You possess a multitude of talents, and a compassionate nature. Finding your soulmate is just the extra icing on an already spectacular cake! As the Sun shifts into Pisces (on the weekend) it’s your time to shine.

First round of the Brisbane Valley Championships, a big Competition which has been played between several local Golf Clubs over many years. The last 20 years between Esk, Toogoolawah and Kilcoy. 86 players turned out at Esk for a top day of Golf, there are many categories to play for which will come to light after the last round at Kilcoy. It is a nightmare for the respective Captains working it all out, especially the last round, many thanks to Esk Captain Shaun Wilson for putting in the hours on Saturday and Sunday. I think on the last day all 3 Captains will work together to sort it all out. Many thanks to our ground staff for giving us a top course to play on. Laidley Touch Football Academy challenges students
LAST week the Laidley State High School Touch Football Program took 48 of its students from Grades 7 -12 for their annual Academy Camp at Bribie Island.
Over the course of the three days, students were constantly challenged to of ‘never let good enough,
Day one was an early morning start followed by
six hours under the tuition of Queensland Touch Association Development
Day two was heavily focused on building a positive culture with activities looking at the history of the school, goal setting, and team work.
Year 11 and 12 students -
cate III in Sports Coaching spent the afternoon coaching the junior students to
reinforce the skills learned the day before prior to completing their own session.
The last day focussed on putting the skills and knowledge from the two days prior into action with games played in four divisions.
Academy coordinator Kristy Kreis said that the camp was probably the best they had run yet.
“We want our players to
be good at touch football, but more importantly we want them to be people with strong morals who are valued members of the community and this trip really did a great job of reinforcing that message,” Ms Kreis said.
Judging on this, 2023 looks like it will be another successful one for Laidley SHS in the sport of Touch Football.

LVBA ready to take on Ipswich comp
BY JACOB HAYDEN
PLAINLAND’S only sporting club, the Plainland Knights, have almost doubled in size in the last 12 months, and the club has ambitions to take it further.
Lockyer Valley Basketball Association (LVBA) coach and organiser Nick Elvidge runs the club alongside his mother, Ange Rhodes.
“I started coaching in 2015 for them for the younger grades as a way to give back to the community,” he said.
“We’ve gone from maybe 70 members to nearly 120 in the last 12 months.”
The LVBA holds games on Tuesday nights with the Gatton Razorbacks and on Wednesday nights with the Plainland Knights at Faith Lutheran College’s sports centre.
Elvidge said the LVBA was hoping to organise teams
to compete in the Ipswich Basketball 2023 competition, starting in June.
“We’re looking at registration for the start of June for Ipswich, and getting more teams and friends who want a game on Wednesday night to come along,” he said.
“At the moment for social basketball it’s $60 a year, and just $5 a game.
for young families, that way kids shoes, a basketball, a waterbottle and a shirt.”
Major sponsor Lockyer
Bins’ Colin Kaine came on board to support the kids.
“Giving them something streets, that’s what it’s all about,” Kaine said.
“You never know with these kids here, there could be another NBL or NBA
star.”
Laidley State High School year 10 student Cole Fitton said it’s fun to try and be like an NBA star.
“It’s a lot of practice,” he said.
His peer Koebie Brooks said word of mouth spread
about the club.
“We’ve been playing basketball for a while at school, and heaps of us kept talking to others and brought them down to play,” Brooks said.
“You get to meet new friends, heaps of people here are really nice.”
“The coaches are amazing, they’ve helped me tonnes –I was terrible.”
The Laidley boys said they loved competing against Faith Lutheran College’s teams.
Donna Ioapo’s son Matthias started with the club in 2023 and has fallen in love.
“This is only his third game so he’s very new to it, but he’s loving it,” she said.
“He sleeps very well after basketball.”
