Dear Editor, There is no doubt that 2021 has been a tough year and with the arrival of Omicron things continue to look uncertain.

Our latest festive season survey found that for many this time of year is particularly stressful and lonely.

Australian Red Cross’ annual loneliness data shows significantly more women and younger people are feeling lonelier this festive season. People reported the pandemic has changed their relationships with others and the way they see the world.

Our team of volunteers will be making calls throughout the festive period to those who are vulnerable and isolated, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers for their work this year.

I would also encourage people to check in on your neighbours and friends to see how they are going or pick up the phone to someone you have lost touch with.

Let them know that people do care and put a smile on their faces. A simple, yet thoughtful gesture could really make their holiday.

Fuel leak leaves Fernvale fuming

A fuel spill left Fernvale’s main street evacuated and residents concerned on December 5.

At around 10am, emergency services responded to an urgent report of a fuel truck leaking at the Metro Service Station.

Lowood Police Station acting senior sergeant Nick Ziersch said the leak was caused by a combination of driveway incline and service station layout as the truck drove into the service station complex.

“A light bar on the truck pushed against piping under the tanks causing damage and the resulting leak, estimated to be in the vicinity of one hundred litres of fuel per minute,” he said.

It is estimated the leak was 1300 litres of unleaded fuel.

Neighbouring resident Shirley Briggs was out of town when she heard of the incident and came home to find fuel had leaked on to her 35-acre Simpson St property.

“The fumes were very strong everywhere; you could smell it really badly everywhere,” Ms Briggs said.

“We were just left with the fuel in our paddock and no advice, nothing, to do anything.

“No one approached us.”

A Department of En-

vironment and Science (DES) spokesperson said an environment officer attended the incident at the request of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

“Most of the spilled fuel collected in a retention pit at the boundary of the fuel station, however an unknown amount entered a private property via an offsite drainage line,” the spokesperson said.

“Unleaded fuel generally evaporates within a day.

“However, where spills are absorbed into soil some residual amounts can remain in the environment for extended periods.”

Somerset Regional Council CEO Andrew Johnson said DES referred the matter to council on Monday.

“Council investigated the matter and attended the site with a land remediation contractor representing the fuel transport company, who we are aware has made arrangements with the affected landholder to remediate an affected area by the end of the week,” he said.

Ms Briggs said the contractor removed the contaminated soil from her paddock on Friday.

“They came out, removed all the contaminated soil, put all clean fill in, and then put turf over the top and they even fenced it off,” she said.

“They were excellent for what they did and their help, considering no one else wanted to help.”

Ms Briggs said now she wants to know what measures will be taken to make sure this does not happen again.

“I guess on our part now, we’re waiting to find out what the failure was,” she said.

“That if we did get fuel into our property again what action is going to be taken.”

“We have made representation to the Premier and Health Minister to have this process simplified for all, including the businesses that have to manage this mandate,” Mr McDonald said.

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or evidence of medical contraindication (printed or electronic) includes: A: Written confirmation of COVID-19 vaccination provided to the person as part of the vaccination process, such as a record of vaccine card; or B: Vaccination information displayed on the Check in Qld app; or C: COVID-19 digital certificate or printed vaccination certificate from Australian Immunisation Register; (1800 653 809) D: An online or printed immunisation history statement for COVID-19 vaccination, including confirmation of a medical contraindication.

If unable to receive a COVID-19 vaccination because of a medical contraindication, they must provide evidence. Upon provision of evidence of a medical contraindication, a person will be treated as if they are fully vaccinated for the entry requirements and to determine occupant density.

The Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association have been donated a SES boat to help protect local waterways

Somerset Regional Council approved the donation of a decommissioned SES boat and trailer to the Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association last week.

The donation will improve the community associations recreational fish enhancement program, which releases native fish into the local waterways and boosts recreational fishing.

Councillor Kylee Isidro said the

decision came down to the amazing work the group are doing.

“I’ve been to their fish releasing days and it is amazing to see the work that they’re doing, and I know the benefits that the group is going to receive by having these,” Cr Isidro said.

“It’s a really good use of resources, it’s repurposing and paying it forward, so I’m very happy to support this.”

Councillor Sean Choat agreed, saying it was the least that

Somerset Council could do for the community group given their success in reintroducing cod into the Upper Brisbane River.

“I think this is a really great initiative for us to provide a new life for this boat, and for such an important organisation to the ecological future of the Somerset region,” he said.

President of the Somerset and Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association Garry Fitzgerald was thrilled to have Council’s support and said

the association was absolutely ecstatic.

“We’ve been doing this for 32 years and over that time we’ve released over 8 million fish into the region’s waterways, including 7500 cod into the Stanley, Upper Brisbane and Bremer catchments,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“It’s good to get the recognition and engagement from Somerset Regional Council and this boat will help tremendously for our future projects.”

Elders Rural Gatton celebrated the end of year in style at the Advanta Pacific Seeds Awards night this month, with multiple agents winning awards.

Elders Gatton Rural Products Sales Manager Maddy Gasparovski said the team won the Customer Focus Award.

“The award is presented to a branch that stands out by going above and beyond for their growers and farmers at an exceptionally higher level,” Ms Gasparovski said.

“It is about recognising what growers’ current needs are, what their future needs are, and bringing that to the table through excellent customer service, forward planning and agronomy knowledge.”

Ms Gasparovski said their purpose-built site at Tenthill carries a wide range of animal health and agricultural products.

Police xmas road safety opThe Queensland Police Service’s high visibility traffic enforcement campaign, Operation Tango Mistletoe runs from 12.01am Saturday December 11 until 11.59pm on Friday January 28.

The intent of this operation is to minimise road trauma in Queensland during the summer school holidays and back to school period.

This year, we are on track to have one of the worst years on our roads.

We have lost 267 lives on Queensland roads so far this year.

This year, we are particularly focused on driver fatigue and drink/drug driving.

Drivers on long trips are encouraged to share the driving where possible, and to take regular breaks, stopping for at least 15 minutes every two hours.

We want everyone to have a happy and safe school holiday period, and that starts with arriving at your destination safely.

Every decision you make on the road counts.

New land valuations for Lockyer Valley in 2022 a ‘win’ Lockyer Valley Regional Council has welcomed news from the Queensland Government’s Valuer-General that a new valuation will be undertaken in the Lockyer Valley local government area.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan said following correspondence with the Department of Resources in October, the new valuation will be issued by 31 March 2022.

Following the significant changes in past valuations and the impact that had on local rates, Cr Milligan said this was a major win for ratepayers of the Lockyer Valley.

“Council advised the Valu-

er-General in October that an annual valuation was needed for the Lockyer Valley due to the ongoing level of development, the large variances in the previous valuations and the impact to ratepayers,” Cr

Milligan said.

“This is a service they charge Council for on an annual basis, so we are pleased to have worked behind-the-scenes to secure this outcome for the region.”

The new valuations are expected to take effect from 30 June 2022.

Auditor-General slams Qld Gov on dam safety Queensland’s Auditor-General has exposed major flaws with the State Government’s management of dams and how it has failed to meet compliance and safety issues.

The report tabled in State Parliament states the State Government’s approach to dam management is ineffective.

It exposes significant gaps in information gathering, systems, monitoring and enforcement

“These governance issues identified by the Auditor-General show the government is gambling with Queenslanders’ safety and the future of water security,” Ms Frecklington said.

“At a time when Queensland is experiencing rapid population growth, the government should be focused on building new dams to meet future demand.

“Instead, this report shows very clearly the government

practices that limit the government’s effectiveness as a regulator.

The report recommends changes to the government’s regulatory framework and approach to dam safety.

Shadow Minister for Water and the Construction of Dams Deb Frecklington said the findings showed how the government was losing control of its core responsibilities.

the number of entries received so far shows residents are actively seeking out products from local businesses.

“We drew the first three winners on November 26 from a barrel-full of entries, it was certainly a substantial number,” he said.

To help drive the campaign and raise awareness, participating businesses were invited to decorate their shop fronts in blue and white for a shot at winning a $1000 advertising package.

“The decorating certainly helped start the conversation at point of sale, and I want to thank the businesses who decorated in jumping on board and helping promote the campaign,” Mr Horrocks said.

“There were some very creative entries!”

Now that we can go on a road trip again, the need or desire to travel sometimes long distances comes the need to act carefully and responsibly on our roads.

The major causes of traffic accidents are all well documented – driving too fast, drink driving, and fatigue. Of these, probably the most difficult to control is driver fatigue.

Other than lack of sleep, there are other factors which can contribute to feeling drowsy when driving; one which is often forgotten is prescription or non-prescription medicines.

Of course, we all know alcohol can slow our reflexes even when we don’t actually feel tired.

Many medicines can do this too; and taking certain medicines and drinking alcohol as well, even a small amount, can become a lethal cocktail.

When starting a new medicine, one prescribed by your doctor or one you buy without a prescription, always check with your pharmacist about the possible side effects; and ask especially if it’s likely to cause drowsiness.

If you take a medicine to aid sleep, drowsiness sufficient to affect your driving skills may occur the following day.

And drowsiness is just one side effect that can affect our driving skills. Some medicines can make us dizzy, light-headed or faint. They can cause us to be angry or aggressive; to feel sick, shaky or unsteady and to have blurred or double vision. All these effects can make it unsafe for us to drive, ride or even walk!

If your medicine does affect your driving, ask your pharmacist if there is an alternative. For instance, if you get hay fever there are antihistamines and other medicines that won’t make you feel drowsy.

There are also times when missing a dose of your prescribed medicine might cause problems. For example, if your medical condition such as epilepsy, anxiety or diabetes is not properly managed, a dangerous situation might result.

Fire safety a must this festive season As lights, candles, trees and tinsel start to fill homes in the lead-up to December 25, Queenslanders are being asked to make fire safety a feature in their Christmas celebrations.

Traditionally a time of festivities, December is also a busy time for firefighters, with crews attending more than 146 structural fires in the last month of last year.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES)

Commissioner Greg Leach urged Queenslanders to make sure their decorations were safe to use this Christmas, and not to be complacent about fire safety.

“We’re calling for everyone to do some simple checks to ensure their home and family are safe,” he said.

“As you’re getting your decorations out of storage, make sure they’re in good condition and discard of any lights or electrical equipment

that’s not up to standard.

“Be on the lookout for any power cables that are frayed or kinked and avoid placing electrical items close to flammable objects like furniture and curtains.

“Only use decorations outside where they have been specifically designed for outdoor use. Indoor lights simply aren’t made to withstand the elements and can pose a serious fire risk under the wrong conditions.

“Lights and candles should be placed in safe locations and never left unattended, especially while your family is sleeping at night.”

Mr Leach said working smoke alarms were also essential and changes to smoke alarm legislation would add enhanced safety to households.

“There’s no disputing that smoke alarms save lives and photoelectric, interconnected alarms provide a fantastic

early warning system to allow people the maximum amount of time to escape a residential fire,” he said.

“From January 1, landlords must have installed photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in residential rental properties at the commencement of a new tenancy or tenancy renewal.

“All other dwellings must comply with the new legislation by 2027.”

Mr Leach said the start

of the holiday season was a perfect time for families to review their home fire escape plan.

“Take time to review your fire escape plan and ensure everyone in your home is aware of the nearest exit, the location of any keys and your chosen meeting place in an emergency.

“A little bit of preparation can go a long way to ensuring your family has a safe and happy Christmas.”

Celebrate festive cheer at the Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival!

End the year at the Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival, returning to North St, Gatton on Friday.

Originally planned for Lake Apex, recent wet weather necessitated the move back to the street carnival.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan encouraged residents of all ages to come along on Friday December 17 for an evening of Christmas cheer.

“It is fantastic to see the return of this wonderful event, which is a great opportunity to get out and about and socialise with those you may not have had the chance to see during another busy year,” she said.

“We’ll have all the usual offerings, including amusement rides, food stalls, markets, the ham wheel, stage entertainment and Santa.

“This year has brought with it plenty of challenges and this is a chance to reconnect as a community and celebrate the festive season.”

The stage program will feature a mix of performances by local dance groups and a mix of traditional Christmas Carols and other great songs performed by local musicians.

The free event will also see the return of the popular ride wristbands, which are $7 per child with family discounts available.

This event is possible thanks to funding from the Federal and State Government’s Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements 2018.

Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival needs volunteers The Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival is on this Friday and Acting Officer in Charge of the Gatton Queensland Ambulance Service, Garth Ridley, said the event is in desperate need of volunteers to help it run smoothly.

During the carnival, QAS has 70 hams & 35 wursts to raffle off and they are looking for volunteers to help sell the tickets from 5.30pm on the night, with all proceeds going back to the Gatton Ambulance Auxiliary Committee.

“We’re just looking for some people to help us out and donate an hour of their time to sell some raffle tickets,” Mr Ridley said.

“What we’re fundraising for is various training equipment and education programs that we otherwise wouldn’t have the funds for, including an airway manikin.

“The airway manikin will be able to assist us in simulating the sort of scenarios and learn the critical skills that we may need to use on a real patient.”

The Christmas Carnival is on this Friday.

Artists create nativity The Forest Hill Painting for Pleasure Group have added a personal touch to Christmas this year.

The group hand painted a wooden nativity scene, on display outside the Forest Hill School of Arts.

The Lockyer Valley Woodworkers provided the cut outs and the artists have spent the last three months painting Mary, Joseph, wise men, and animals.

Margaret Holt from the

painting group said The Lockyer Woodcrafters willingly and happily donated their time in the finished touches of the boards and extended her thanks.

They meet at the School of Arts on Wednesdays.

Scout for life with engineer’s mind Max Oyston has a life-long love of engineering and the outdoors.

He was a high-achieving Scout, an Air Force Cadet, worked on the railways, and built custom machines.

He was born in Sydney on Jan 7, 1939 and grew up in Leumeah, near Campbelltown New South Wales.

“It was just a village, of course it’s part of the city of Campbelltown now,” Max said.

“That’s where I grew up and went to school.”

His father’s work took Max and his family to Warragamba Dam, where he made some of his happiest childhood memories.

“We had an absolute ball,” he said.

After starting as a Cub Scout in Campbelltown, Max truly earned his stripes at Warragamba Dam. “We had a fantastic Scout leader,” Max said.

“To me, he was a wonderful man.

“He was a guide for me.”

Max achieved the highest possible honour in Scouts.

“I was a Queen’s Scout, that’s the highest award you can get,” he said.

Scouts gave Max a unique opportunity.

“Then in 1956 I went to the Olympics in Melbourne and carried out medals as a Queen’s Scout,” he said.

“There were ten Queen’s Scouts from every state to hand out medals.”

He loved the outdoor skills he learned in Scouts, like camping, morse code and first aid.

“We just learnt so much… we were taught brilliantly I thought.”

His love of the outdoors extended

Max Oyston had an engineer’s mind and a Scout’s sense of adventure.

beyond Scout trips, and sometimes young Max was a bit of a risk taker.

An ill-advised swim in the flooding Warragamba River was nearly his last.

“It was while the dam was being built,” Max recalled.

“We found this cache of cable, beautiful! We’ll swim the river with it.

“So I tied it round my waist,

jumped into the water – this is flood water mind you – raging past, and I started going for my life across the river.

“Ran out of cable ten feet from the other side, didn’t I?” Floundering, Max was pulled back to shore by his mates.

“I should’ve drowned that day, no two ways about it.”

Luckily, he lived to see another

day and pursue his passions.

When Max went to high school at Penrith, he joined the Air Force Cadets.

“I just loved it,” he said.

He still loves flying and has a flight simulator in his room at Tabeel.

Sadly, he couldn’t pursue a career in the Air Force.

During his application, he found

out he was red-green colour blind.

“I could have gone in as clerical, but I wanted engineering,” Max said.

Instead, he started an apprenticeship at the railways.

“Working on steam engines, that was my other great love,” Max said.

“They call it live steam.

“The train drivers will tell you, the locos are all alive and they’ve all got characters, no two locos are the same.

“Even if they’re the same model, they all drive differently.

“They’re alive, and that’s what I love about it.”

Max was a founding member of the Grandchester Live Model Steamers and helped weld the tracks at the grounds.

He had a mind for engineering and designed and manufacture special purpose equipment.

“Engineering wise, I was brilliant,” Max said.

“A customer would come to me and say they have a problem, can you build a machine to fix our problem.

“If I got the job, I’d design the machine build it, install it, commission it, and get it all up and running.

“I did that very successfully but never made any money.”

He worked as a TAFE teacher in fitting and machining before changing to teaching fluid power, hydraulics and pneumatics.

His teaching job brought him to Queensland, in Emerald and then Roma.

Between his business ventures, teaching stints, and moving interstate, Max has always lived by the Scout’s motto: be prepared.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR QAS FUNDRAISING We are seeking volunteers to help us sell fundraising tickets at the G a t t o n C h r i s t m a s S t r e e t C a r n i v a l o n F r i d a y 1 7 t h D e c e m b e r.

Santa drops by Lowood There were plenty of smiles at Lowood Christmas Carnival on Saturday.

Lowood Show Society president Lynell Jendra said the evening was fine with not a storm in sight, but the crowd was slightly down on previous years.

“We had free rides and face painting and Santa.

“Santa arrived by Rural Fire Brigade and a free gift

and an ice block given to every child.

“We had a Ham wheel and $10.00 either of ham number in every spin.

“Our Christmas raffle consisted of a number of prizes was also drawn.

“We were entertained throughout the night by Shane Hauschildt.”

A large crowd gathered in the main street with ham wheels continuing its popular tradition, and Santa being the crowd favourite.

Children were kept entertained on the rides, whilst old friends caught up on the year past.

Musical entertainment provided by the Salvation Army band and on stage artists kept the Christmas carnival atmosphere.

“The lid is usually set to hibernate, so you’ve sent it into hibernation before it’s turned off, then when you lift it up next time it’s trying to wake up from hibernation while still trying to shut down,” Meachelle said.

It would be like driving your car into garage and leaving it

in drive all night while you go inside and have dinner.

There is a reason you need to properly shut down your computer.

“When Windows shuts down, it goes through a specific shut down process to prevent corruption to the system and programs,” Meachelle said.

“So if you force shut it down too much – and too much might be once – you’re going to be unlucky and corrupt something and one day it won’t turn back on.

“It’s allowing it to go through the stages of a correct shut down.”

A force shut down is holding down the power button or unplugging the power cord.

However, it’s fine to leave your computer in sleep mode and rarely turn it off as long as you you’re not messing with the shut down process.

It is particularly important when the laptop has a spinning hard drive.

“A lot of people don’t wait for that,” Meachelle said.

“Some computers can take a minute, minute and a half to fully shut down and the hard drive will still be spinning while they grab it and shove it in their bag.

“You shouldn’t be moving them while they’re on and those parts inside are moving.”

Prevention is one thing and it never hurts to learn some computer care, but when in doubt remember the old off and on again should do the trick.

See Lockyer through Craig’s eyes

BY GRACE CRICHTON Photographer Craig Bachmann once again captures the Lockyer Valley in stunning vistas for his 2022 calendar.

Since launching his first calendar for 2020, it has proved a popular Christmas gift.

“I’ve had lots of calendars go overseas,” Craig said.

“Every year I try and make it my best shots from the last twelve months.”

Craig always had an eye for photography and recalls taking photos with a pointand-shoot camera as young as seven.

“I used to love storms ever since a young age,” Craig said.

“I went through three rolls of film trying to get a [photo of] lightning out of a storm when I was a kid, and I got one shot with lightning out of three rolls.”

Although he continued to dabble over the years, it is

only in the last five or so years that he has pursued photography on a grander scale.

“I had to be taught how to use an SLR camera, you don’t know that automatically,” he said.

“But I’ve always had the

eye for it, just born with it.”

Craig found photography a way to wind down at the end of the day and it became a vital outlet for him.

His distinctive style captures scenes from around the Lockyer Valley, from old

barns, fields in bloom, the night sky, and he has mastered the once-elusive lightning shot.

“I’ve lived here my whole life and it’s important to me,” Craig said.

“I think it’s important to

a lot of people, when you capture a good photo of something special, that’s history then.”

While the calendar is the best seller, Craig also sells his photos on canvas and as prints and prioritises quality.

Since launching the product range, Craig said local businesses have been incredibly supportive of him.

“The Gatton Jewellers were one of the first people who offered to put my products in their store,” Craig said.

“And I didn’t ask, they offered, it really showed they believed in me.”

When Porters Plainland Hotel built their accommodation, they asked Craig to supply photographs for their walls.

“That was a big deal for me at the time, starting off,” he said.

“It gave me more confidence and helped get my name out there.”

Craig’s calendar has certainly made its mark, with more shops stocking the calendar each year.

“I have my online store, but if any locals want to buy calendars, I’d like them to go to the businesses and support them, because they support me,” Craig said.

Rural Aid giving day aims for $1M

Gatton Campdraft Association received $9,300 in grant funding under round six of the Stronger Communities Programme (SCP).

Mick and Pauline Brennan of the Gatton Campdraft Association were joined by Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz and State Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald to make the announcement last week.

Mr Brennan said the Association was very thankful for

the funding and they wanted the facility to be spot on.

“We want to pass this on to future generations and it will be spot on.

“We are building a great facility here and every little bit counts,” Mr Brennan said.

Mr Buchholz said the SCP was about ensuring local community groups were supported in the great work they do, to make the region a better place to live.

“This funding will go to-

wards building the livestock pen and I am sure will be critically important to future Campdraft events, which are growing in popularity and will attract hundreds to Grantham,” Mr Buchholz said.

“Here in the Lockyer Valley, we’re so lucky to have so many good people in the community, so many local groups doing great things to make the Lockyer more liveable, to bring people together

and that all helps the region.

“I want to congratulate Mick and the entire team here at the Campdraft.”

Mr McDonald said since the Campdraft has relocated they have made every post a winner.

“This is another grant which will enhance their facilities,” he said.

“I know how much the Campdraft people appreciate this grant from our Federal Member Scott Buchholz.”

Rural Aid eclipsed its fundraising goal within hours on its first Annual Giving Day. Generous Australians have helped the rural charity exceed its $750,000 fundraising target before midday on Friday.

Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said the charity has now boosted its target to $1 million.

“We’ve been blown away by how quickly and generously the public has reached into their hearts today,” Mr Warlters said.

“We’ve extended our goal to $1 million so that we can better help our mates in the bush into the new year.”

Funds from Giving Day will go towards programs

including free on-theground counselling, financial relief services, water and hay deliveries and volunteer support.

“Our farmers have had a tough year between drought, flood, mouse plague and a pandemic to top it off,” Mr Warlters said.

“Watching the outpouring of support has been inspiring to see.

“It demonstrates again how generous the Australian community is in support of our farmers.”

Rural Aid aims to help tackle the ongoing mental health crisis with disaster and financial relief services, water and fodder donations, and free on-the-ground counselling and volunteer support.

Fire Ant Program speaks to locals The National Fire Ant Eradication Program recently spoke to affected growers in the Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, Somerset and Ipswich local government areas.

A spokesperson from the National Fire Ant Eradication Program spokesperson said the current focus is protecting already-treated areas from re-infestation and treating any remaining fire ants in clearance areas to stop them from spreading.

“Movement of fire ants through products such as soil, manure and hay, is a major risk,” they said.

“Anyone who moves materials that can carry fire ants from the fire ant biosecurity zones must follow the requirements in the Biosecurity Regulation 2016.”

Baled materials must then be moved off the paddock within 24 hours of baling.

Hay should be stored 30cm above the ground, or if stored on ground must have a bar-

rier such as a conrete slab or plastic sheeting.

The shed should be treated with a 30cm wide perimeter using an approved chemical.

Effective barriers prevent fire queen ants from settling in the bales.

Bales should also be

covered.

The recommended chemical is bifenthrin; Chlorpyrifos is no longer recommended.

In what could only be described as colourful, imaginative, and innovative, Ma Ma Creek Milkbar has nudged out Mrs V’s Drapery to win the Your Town in store decorating competition.

With the innovative use of hay bales to drive home the shop locally message, Ma Ma Creek Milkbar left passers-by in no doubt of their stance as a local business.

Mrs V’s Drapery in Lowood was a very close second with a very imagina-

tive use of a mannequin and the store’s front window.

Judges said both displays were of the highest calibre and was a credit to both store owners for the effort displayed in spreading the shop in Your Town message.

Due to the high standard of

entrants, the judges awarded a highly commended in the competition to Gatton Tyre Service who cleverly used a common car tyre to recreate the Your Town logo.

This showed a lot of thought went into embodying the campaign.

By decorating shop fronts in the campaign’s blue and white colours, participating businesses were in the running to win a $1000 adverting package in The Independent.

Decorations promoted the campaign in innovative and

enticing ways but with a clear message to shop in Your Town.

It was interesting to see how a large number of shops carried the blue and white theme throughout and the creativity was quite unique across the many entrants.

Local knowledge, better outcomes Landowners, businesses and communities have and will continue to influence how Inland Rail is delivered in the Lockyer Valley.

PATH TO THE BIG LEAGUES

The next generation of professional rugby league players could be coming out of Gatton.

Lockyer District High School (LDHS) have formalised a partnership with West Brisbane Panthers for their girls rugby league players.

LDHS coach Costa Charalambous said the school identified a need to guide aspiring players to chase a career in rugby league.

“We spoke to one of the BHP Women’s Premiership Clubs and we spoke to West Brisbane Panthers and we have a pathway with them now,” he said.

The team will train one day per term with West

Brisbane, exposing them to an elite level of training and coaching.

LDHS girls rugby league co-ordinator Eden Bartlett said west Brisbane is affiliated with North which is a feeder club to Melbourne Storm.

“They will have access to strength and conditioning coaches, speed and agility coaches, and full hands-on access to the elite players and elite coaching staff,” she said.

Mr Charalambous said the four top players can secure further training and gain valuable exposure to elite level players and potentially NRL scouts.

“They will give four of our girls development contracts, so they will train with their top side,” he said.
