Estate extension

SOMERSET Regional Council has approved an extension to a housing estate at Woolmar near Kilcoy.

An additional 69 new lots will be created at Hedley Park Estate ranging in size

Gym operator appointed Council has appointed a well-known and highly respected operator to continue managing its combined Toogoolawah Pool and Gym Precinct.

Growing pains in regional funds

SOMERSET Regional Council (SRC) will take up the issue of being excluding from a ‘regional’ grants program with the government.

SRC were advised they could apply for the Growing Regions program as they had an existing application in round 6 of the Building Better Regions Fund, but have since been told the region is not eligible.

The Australian Government’s Growing Regions grant program was announced in May and was to replace the Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Council’s application in round 6 of the BBRF was to go toward the Toogoolawah Gateway Centre, a facility incorporating a new library, wellness hub, and visitor facilities for rail trail users.

Councillor Sean Choat said it was ‘ridiculous’ and

‘absolutely crazy’ the Gold Coast was eligible for the program and Somerset was not.

“I think someone in some with pictures and lines on a map makes determinations without knowing the facts,” he said.

“I think I’ve said this before, we have to bear the brunt of Brisbane’s growing pains in a lot of ways.

“It’s just not fair that they

expect us to manage things the same way a big council like Brisbane does.

“It’s unfair to our people, it’s just not right.”

In the ordinary meeting on June 7, council resolved to write to the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and the Minister for Regional Development, Local Government, and Territories.

They intend to object to the ‘apparent exclusion of Somerset Regional Council’ from the program when they they would be eligible to apply.

Council intends to seek the Ministers’ intervention ‘to ensure that the Growing Regions Program guidelines Somerset Regional Council and all recipients of similar advice are eligible to apply’.

Expression of Interest

Tender documents have been prepared for council

to ‘test the market’ for interest in leasing the site.

Councillor Sean Choat said the choice would provide a great opportunity to the community.

“Going into the future I think it will bring our

region into line with a lot of other regions that have this opportunity for parents to make that choice,” he said.

“Make no mistake, we have a fantastic state system, but some parents

are looking for something a little different.

“I think that choice is always important.

“I look forward to seeing what happens in the future.”

council awarded a threeyear tender to Somerset Health and Fitness. Best of Queensland

Ottaba Llamas, Skydive Ramblers, The Linville Hotel and the Esk Grand Hotel have all been selected to participate in the Best of Queensland Experiences Program known as Transformational Experiences Mentoring Program.

Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said council would actively support the tourism operators as they complete the program. Mt Glen Rock project

Somerset Regional Council is continuing to progress its development of Mt Glen Rock at Esk.

Mayor Graeme Lehmann said council’s focus over the past six months was to establish a Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) and undertake onsite ecological surveys.

Two years to reach Support centre receives grant funding boost

THE ROSEWOOD and District Support Centre have received funding to purchase technology to help with community needs, thanks to Australia Post’s annual People of Post Grants.

Pam McEwin from the Australia Post Rosewood

Rosewood and District Support Centre community project worker Tia Lancaster said the grant would go towards purchasing Samsung tablets to assist in identifying community needs.

“At the moment, we’re trying to go and get feedback, and we’re sort of just jotting it down on paper,” she said.

“With the tablets, we can take them out to community consultations and get feedback.

“We like to be very com-

munity lead, so by getting that feedback in, to get to utilise that and identify the success of our programs and also the gaps our programs might have.”

Ms Lancaster said the centre provided a wide range of services and were very

responsive to the community’s needs.

“We help people with a from emergency food relief through to technical support and JP services.

Red Apple Day (Wednesday 21st June 2023) is Bowel Cancer Australia's Annual Giving Day,when Australians are encouraged to support thevital work of the charity.

Bowel cancer claims the lives of 103 Australians every week (5,375 people a year).

he good news is that bowel cancer is one of the most curable types of cancer if detected early. Early detection offers the best hope of reducing the number of Australians who die each year from bowel cancer. However, at the moment only about 40% of bowel cancers are detected early so we need to start becoming aware of the symptoms and act fast.

If bowel cancer is detected before it has spread beyond the bowel, the chance of surviving for at least five years after diagnosis is around 90%, with most people able to return to their current lifestyle. However, most cases are detected at a later stage and so only 60% of people diagnosed with the disease survive five years.

he majority of bowel cancers develop from tiny growths inside the large bowel (colon) or rectum.

It is referred to as a silent killer as often thereare no symptoms until it has reached anadvanced stage. his is why early detection isso important.

Most bowel cancers make their presenceknown early by leaking small (invisible)amounts of blood into the bowel. his is thenpassed into the faeces. his bleeding oftenonly becomes visible to the naked eye whenthe cancer becomes more advanced.

Speaking to a health professional about any concerns you may have is important.

Screening tests available to the public include:

• Free screening via the National Bow l Cancer Screening Program is currently available for people aged 50-74.

e aim is to find any polyps or to detect cancer early when it is easier to treat and cure. Early detection saves lives.

LOCKYER Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan expressed frustration at the amount of time it took for investigations into councillor misconduct to conclude.

Cr Brett Qualischefski was formally found to have engaged in misconduct for taking photos of a woman at the gym without her consent.

The woman made a complaint to council in April 2021 and council referred the matter to

Barry’s mission to raise awareness of bladder cancer

BARRY Knights had never heard of bladder cancer before his diagnosis.

The Gatton-based Power FM (87.8) radio station co-owner and Toowoomba based PTV Channel 0 television station owner said he was shattered to learn about his condition.

“I was diagnosed in September last year and didn’t know anything about bladder cancer before that,” Mr Knights said.

“It’s very poorly reported, media-wise, but there are 3,000 new diagnoses in Australia every year and 40% of those die.”

May was Bladder Cancer Awareness Month and Mr Knights spent days every centres in Toowoomba to raise awareness.

Mr Knights has begun a new project, having partnered with the World Bladder Cancer Patient Coalition to start a new show on his television station called ‘Blood in the Water’.

“I started doing this

because it’s really important when you’re in as much pain as I’m in to do something which focuses attention away from yourself,” he said.

‘Blood in the Water’ will concentrate on pub-

lic awareness of bladder cancer, giving patients the opportunity to share their story and allowing experts to dispel myths and provide help.

Mr Knights said he was looking for sponsors for his

show.

“Once I’ve paid my expenses, everything, 100% of the post-expense, will be donated to Bladder Cancer Australia,” he said.

“That organisation supports bladder cancer

patients so that if you’ve got out-of-pocket expenses or travel expenses you can’t meet, they cover all of that.”

LOCAL BUSINESS RECOGNITION DINNER 2023 Bush food business is booming

NATIVE Oz Bushfoods is one of seven businesses being recognised by the Lockyer Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism for their outstanding performance at the Business Recognition Dinner on August 5.

Owners Doug and Tracey

Goebel of the Bundjalung people registered the business name in 2018, ordered some trees from interstate and began planting on their Ropeley property.

“The country was still in full-on drought,” Tracey said.

“Everyone drove past and thought we were stupid, because we’d hold a hose out the window and be driving our little truck down the lanes to water the trees.”

They also acquired 3kg of dried desert quandong fruit from South Australia, which they made into a salt blend.

“We made a salt blend, which was the original idea, Dougy made some spices in the kitchen,” Tracey said.

“That’s where the idea was launched from, the salt blend.”

The couple had the idea for the Pink River Murray salt with its secret herbs and spices back in 2015, but it took three years to work out how to commercialise it.

“Then in 2019 we took three products to the market, that salt blend, a quandong

jam, and Davidson plum jam,” Tracey said.

Toowoomba farmers’ market every weekend and started to brand build.”

However, that was not the end goal for the Goebels and in May 2022 Native Oz was approved for a Development Application change of use to be able to open its gates to

the public.

“That’s why we wanted the farm, we wanted to educate on native foods,” Tracey said.

“There’s so many people out there telling you things, but they’re telling you the gammin things, the wrong things… so we wanted to teach people the right way and teach people how to be culturally respective of First

Nations food.

“It’s not something you can road or go to the shop and get it.”

Native Oz holds regular tours for private booking and recently hosted 30 students from Sophia College Plainland.

Sharing the culture, knowledge, and how to respect and

prepare native foods is at the heart of their business.

Tracey said there were 106 varieties of bush tomato in Australia, and only six which were edible.

“People don’t know that, there’s nowhere for them to go learn that,” she said.

“There is native tomato growing here that’s quite poisonous in the Lockyer Valley.

“But there’s also things that line this road that are edible that we harvest.”

Doug said the business’ priorities were to protect native foods, educate people, and encourage more First Nations involvement in the industry.

“There’s only 2% of Aboriginal people involved in the native food industry,” Doug said.

They said they hoped to hire First Nations youth as the business expands.

Native Oz received a $10,000 grant from Tourismraphy to help promote their business, and more recently received a $50,000 grant from the National Indigenous Australians Agency which they plan to use to build a disabled toilet alongside a tea house and bush tucker café.

“Then we can put our product through it and teach

“Everything we do comes back to teaching our culture and native foods.”

Doug and Tracey were grateful for the recognition of

getting out there, people are listening and people are wanting to learn,” Tracey said.

“Hopefully it can help us break down that barrier between black Australia and white Australia,” Doug said.

GREEN thumbs will soon be able to enter the seventh annual Somerset Garden Competition with entries opening on Saturday June 17.

Somerset Regional Council’s popular program is sponsored by Searles, the leading market innovator in the home garden industry.

The Lockyer and Somerset Independent have also partnered with council to promote the program and showcase gardens in Somerset.

The competition will be launched at the hugely successful and award-winning event, the Esk Garden and Lifestyle Fair on Saturday June 17.

Somerset garden enthusiasts have until 4pm, Friday September 8 to enter the competition.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann encouraged all residents, businesses and

nity groups in the region to get involved.

“We had a record equalling number of entries in 2022

and we’re hopeful that we will see many more gardens entered this year,” Cr Lehmann said.

“We saw some incredible gardens entered last year

and were impressed by the made in presenting their gardens to such high standards.”

Cr Lehmann said it was fantastic to again have the

support of Somerset based business, Searles, and the continued support of media sponsor The Lockyer and Somerset Independent “Searles have again

come on board as the major sponsor and have supported this competition since its inception,” he said.

“They will provide each entrant into the competition with a signature Searles gardening gift pack.”

Cr Lehmann said the garden competition was about encouraging people across Somerset to showcase their gardens and providing inspiration to others to do the same.

Local builder now offering large range of rural sheds in EOFY sale

Brian Johnston, owner-operator of Country Shed Builders, has been building for 32 years. He started as an apprentice builder in New Zealand before moving to Australia to continue his career.

In 2019, Brian began working alongside Now Buildings as a Referral Builder, and in that time, he has built an impressive 92 of their sheds for customers.

Brian’s latest venture has seen him become one of Now Buildings’ Referral Agents. This allows Brian to build the sheds for the customers he has referred.

Having built so many of Now Buildings’ sheds, he knows the product well, which puts him in a great position to recommend the buildings to others. Brian has been a Referral Agent for just under two years and

has referred four customers so far.

Rowan Payne, National Agents & Builder Manager for Now Buildings, says it’s been fantastic to see Referral Builders become Referral Agents as well.

“We have such a good relationship with Brian, and it’s great to see him & other package of a shed & build all in one.”

Now Buildings is a proud Australian family-owned business with more than 50 years of combined experience within the industry. Their experience has allowed them to develop a unique, innovative, easy-tobuild, strong shed system, which has seen them become Australia’s leading wholesale shed company.

Now Buildings supply trade, businesses and farmers direct with massive shed purchases, all while using only the best Australian steel and components on the market.

By using only Australian steel, not only do customers receive a high-quality shed at wholesale price, but the purchase of that shed also helps create jobs locally and support both the local and national economy.

Having a Referral Agents network is just another way Now Buildings is supporting local businesses.

Rowan says, “Our sheds are designed for rural land & farms, and what better way to buy a rural shed than through your trusted local builder, such as Country Shed Builders.”

“Our customers can deal locally while still being able to take advantage of the largest wholesale shed company and the huge buying power we have. Plus, they’ll already be connected to a builder.”

Brian services the Southern QLD & Northern NSW areas, where Now Buildings has become a trusted name for sheds. Their biggest EOFY sale is now on, so get in touch with Country Shed Builders for more info. Brian can be contacted on 0417 996 488.

has been working with many organisations to assist in establishing gardens that are able to withstand the extreme weather conditions of climate change.

Surging popularity in garden art attracts more markets to fair

THERE will be plants in abundance at the Esk Garden and Lifestyle Fair, but also a big uptick in garden art.

Valley of the Lakes Garden Club have noticed an increased interest in garden art recently.

Vice president Lisa Davis said stall holders like Crinkle Creek and Rusty Rose were immensely popular last year.

“People come to the

country and they expect stuff,” Lisa said.

“Everything here is made with craftsmanship, it’s not mass produced, they’re artists.”

Adding art, whether sculpture, wall art, or decorative bird feeders, brings personality to the garden.

“Without garden art, it’s kind of characterless,” Lisa said.

“You need the garden art

to bring the character to the garden.”

With the unpredictability of weather and the climate, way to keep your garden beautiful no matter the conditions.

“If you invest a lot in plants, it’s a risk,” Lisa said.

“Whereas garden art, you know you can buy it, put it in your garden, it’s going to look good forever.”

Garden Art is growing increasingly popular and there will be plenty at the Esk Garden and Lifestyle Fair.

The main pavilion will have needlework, cooking, upstairs.

We also have apiculture back this year with a couple of new exhibitors.

The vegetables and

fruit and farm produce are underneath main pavilion.

Last year we had an excellent display of cabbages.

If the weather is kind, we should have an excellent

Back this year are displays by various schools.

Outdoor entertainment will be provided by Midnight Curfew, Lowood High School Dance Troupe and Choir, Troppo Bob with his magic and Flea Circus, and Hula Hoop Brisbane.

Lawnmower races will lead into night entertainment as well as Demolition Derby and ending with Fireworks.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Lynell Jendra, Lowood Show Society President

Liz honoured at Lowood

LOWOOD Show Society will honour Elizabeth Boughen’s life and dedication to local show societies with the Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Trophy for Exhibitor Gaining Most Points in Stud Beef Young Judges Competition at the 2023 Lowood Show.

The Rosewood local, who was the West Moreton and Brisbane Valley Sub Chamber (WMBVSC) Rural Ambassador for 2022, sadly passed away in January 2023.

Lowood Show Society president Lynell Jendra said the WMBVSC thoughtmorial trophy for Liz.

“She was involved with beef cattle at so many shows in our Sub Chamber and she was headed for a good career in agriculture,” Mrs Jendra said.

Father Noel Boughen

said Liz continued to make the family proud.

“[Judging] was her thing, she was aiming to be the judge and she got a lot of help early days, this is sort of where she started,” Mr Boughen said.

Mr Boughen thanked the Show Society for thinking of her.

Get creative for crafts display

TIME’S running out to get your creative crafts in for the Lowood Show. Creative crafts chief steward Lynell Jendra is excited to see what local knitters, weavers and designers will bring to the showgrounds today, Wednesday June 14.

“You’ve got your knitting, crochet, patchworks, machine sewing and all that which comes under the creative crafts banner,” Mrs Jendra said. She said anyone can

enter, all they have to do is bring it along.

“They don’t have to be an expert at it, if they dabble in a craft and there’s no class in the book just bring it along and I can make a new or separate class for it,” she said.

“A lot of people say ‘my stuff’s not good enough to be put in a show’ but it’s not about being good, it’s about putting it in for a display.

“Think of it as a display of the work of local people,

instead of as a competition.”

A popular class for juniors is the Lego section, with children able to enter any item.

Mrs Jendra said she hoped more juniors would

with knitting, crochet and macrame becoming more and more popular.

Entries are due at the showgrounds between 1pm and 4pm today, with judging happening on Thursday June 15.

Bumper horse program brings in the best of the best

LOWOOD will once again host an extensive horse program with local and regional competitors at this year’s show.

Chief steward and ring master Bruce Vayro said they expected another strong showing.

“It’s going to be another bumper show, 570 classes over the two days,” he said.

“This year we’ll be having our local day on Friday the 16th and our main day is Saturday the 17th.”

The local day is open to competitors from Somerset, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, Ipswich, and the western suburbs of Brisbane and the program includes the Margaret Wieland Memorial.

The Supreme District Hack award was named for the past Lowood Show Society secretary, who passed away in 2010.

Mr Vayro said he was wide’ from people wanting to

enter the horse program.

“Lowood is very centrally located to a lot of areas so that’s why we get a lot of horses from the Gold Coast, over the border in New South Wales, Toowoomba, everywhere basically,” he said.

All the favourite classes including hack, led, ridden, saddle, and harness, are

included and more than 25 breeds are expected to be on show on Saturday.

The crowd-pleasing show jumping will return as will the new 80cm class.

“The 80cm introduced for very popular,” Mr Vayro said.

FINE art stewards Ethel Saxby and Margaret Holt are optimistic this year’s display will build upon the well-supported showing of 2022.

“Anything up to 100 we’re hopefully expecting this year,” Ethel said.

Talent shines in horticulture

PLENTY of local talent will be displayed in the horticulture section this year from new and returning exhibitors.

Chief steward of the horticulture section Graham Bayliss encouraged everyone to come along and create a great display.

“Everybody’s welcome, there was a new exhibitor last year, she only brought one plant, and she won the whole lot in that section,” he said.

Mr Bayliss said the section had grown over the last few years.

“We’ve had growth, each year’s quite good, it’s so well supported,” he said.

The subject of the locally sponsored special section is ‘Australiana’.

First prize will be awarded to the artwork which best responds to the theme.

Last year’s special section was won by Marga-

See what school days are like

WHILE you’re exploring the show, be sure to stop by and admire the work of the youngest participants.

This year’s school work section will showcase the from kindy right through to high school.

Schoolwork Steward and the show’s Junior Matron Lahtasha Lewis said the society introduced a school display section this year, a in addition to their individual entries.

“We’ve done it as a school display so all the kids can get involved and do their own little bit in the display,” she said.

“We welcome everyone to come down and have a look at the school displays.

“You will be blown that the kids put into their displays.”

Lahtasha said the school work section was a great way for the kids to get involved in the show.

“You’ve got the young kids coming into the show and they’ve got something to look forward to,” she said.

“They then go around the show and have a look at other things that they might learn about… and they they might like to do.”

For show goers who don’t have children, it’s still worth a visit to the pavilion to learn about what schools in the local area are up to.

“Come and have a look at what the schools around have going on,” Lahtasha said.

Doggy day out

GET TO know man’s best friend a little more at the Dog Show, run by Brisbane Valley Kennel Club.

Last year, the Lowood Show attracted 179 individual exhibitors and 333 dogs of 112 different breeds to the dog show.

Brisbane Valley Kennel Club show secretary Kaye McGhie said agricultural shows were particularly popular among entrants.

“Breeders are a wealth of knowledge so the general public can actually come and ask them all about those breeds,” Kaye said.

“What we’d really like to see is more general public, more people coming, more local people coming to see the dogs.”

The dog show is on Friday June 16 from 9am.

Miniature Goats on display

MEMBERS of the Australian All Breeds of Miniature Goat & Sheep Society (AABMGS) will be exhibiting their miniature goats at the time this year.

AABMGS president Allan Purton said the showcase aimed to promote miniature goats as pets and encourage new miniature goat breeders.

“Goats make fantastic pets,” he said.

“They are very and bond to their human families.

“We try to encourage more younger people to try and put something in, your new breeders are the young people coming through.”

AABMGS show manager Therese Purton said the committee collaborated to introduce new and exciting sections each year.

“We like to introduce new things according to what people are interested in,” she said.

“We never used to have best-of-breed at the show, but a few members asked for that.

“For everyone that they go into the best-ofbreed category, and one is selected as the best of that breed.”

Ms Purton has seen the section grow in popularity since she started mananging in 2014.

“We’ve had quite large shows before COVID, and then since COVID it’s started to slowly build up again,” she said.

UTES ROARING IN

STEWARD Jessica Schulz has been running the Lowood Show Ute Show for the last 14 years and said the 2023 Lowood Show Ute Show would possibly be the biggest they’ve had recently.

“There is a recently formed ute enthusiast group out of Caboolture called ‘Dukes Utes’ and we are very proud they are coming to support our show and do a huge display of around 20 utes just from the Dukes crew,” she said.

The exhaust sound off and the circle work are the most popular classes.

Lowood Show Ute Show has a great reputation for bringing together all the really nice and really loud utes from all over the countryside.

Lowood will again host the West Moreton & Brisbane Valley Sub-Chamber Ute Muster Finals as well.

Lowood Show Society would like to thank their ever supportive sponsors Tarampa Towing, A&M Civil & Country Rumble & Co.

Award-winning

THE BEST of Lowood’s culinary genius will be on display this weekend in the homemade articles section of the Lowood Show.

Chief Steward Lynell Jendra said the section was back in full for 2023.

“The home made articles will be featured again this year, I’d like to see a few more junior ones come in,” she said.

“The kindy kids were pretty good last year, but

Hop into the kitchen and bake your best homemade articles for the Lowood Show.

we need a few more in the upper levels.”

Entrants will no longer be hindered by COVID rules and regulations and are welcome to bring their items in sealed plastic containers to the showgrounds before 9am on June 16 for judging.

So, dust off your secret recipes and produce your sweets, and jams to be in the running for the treasured blue ribbon.

Glendinning’s beast in for the winning

BRODIE Glendinning’s parents bought him his 1990 Nissan 300ZX Z32 when he was 13 years old as a project car.

“It gave us a chance, me and my dad, to build something together,” Brodie said. Now 23, Brodie’s 300ZX Milwaukee Street Machine of the Year.

After getting his Ps, Brodie started pushing the car further and further.

“It’s got a turbo 350 Chev in it and a Ford nine-inch doesn’t go into an import,” he said.

Ford Bronco, the motor was out of a Camaro, and I’ve been through two transmissions.

“One I bought out of a scrap yard for about $500

and this one I paid about $5,000 for.”

Brodie and his father Steve ended up making the engine naturally aspirated.

“It had a kit of nitrous on it, something for me to start learning because at that stage I was still pretty young and hadn’t driven anything with

power with it,” Brodie said. “I got sick of that and bought two turbos for it, and since then it’s been trying

“With a six-cylinder in it before… it took me about eight seconds to get up to 100k/h, and now it does it in a couple seconds,” he said.

Brodie said the 300ZX got the name ‘Call 000’ after upsetting some neighbours.

“It’s loud, it’s obnoxious and I’ve had some people… who have called the police on it,” he said.

“The police ended up loving it and they were good sports about it.”

Brodie was excited to be a

Proud dad Steve said Brodie deserved all the credit.

“Every cent he’s had and every available minute has been spent on this car,” Steve said.

Lockyer side on the brink

THE LOCKYER District

High School Open Girls rugby league team are two victories away from a state Murphy Cup on June 2. The Lockyer side won three of their four games at the Karyn Murphy Cup and will now face Chinchilla in in the state cup qualifying

Lockyer District High School Open Girls co-coach Costa Charalambous said the side had a strong blend of players this year.

“The depth for us this year has been very good,” he said.

“It’s been a good mixture of players, some of our older squad coming back, some new players that have been stepping up, so it’s been good for us.”

Lockyer District High School Open Girls player

Karla Cameron said the comradery within the squad has been the key to success this season.

“This year, we’ve gotten closer as a team and have brought together a friendship with the whole team,” she said.

Lockyer District High School students and rugby players Nevadah Wallace, Karla Cameron, and Star Georgaros.
