LAIDLEY SHINES LIKE A DIAMOND

THE LAIDLEY Spring Festival attracted huge crowds and brilliant displays to celebrate 60 years for its diamond anniversary across from Friday to Sunday September 8-10.

Despite some rain and unwanted lightshows on Friday

night, the festival still brought out the best of the Lockyer Valley with displays from the Laidley Garden Club, Lockyer Valley Orchid Society, Laidley Quilt and Craft Expo and many more.

On Saturday, Laidley and

Lockyer Valley schools, community groups, and businesses toured Laidley town with dazzling displays and quirky costumes in the parade. There was plenty to do across the weekend with market stalls across town,

performances, demonstrations and an abundance of kids entertainment.

The inaugural Bee Happy Day was also a buzzing success on Sunday in Forest Hill.

THE MORE I read the whole 26 Page Uluru Statement From the Heart the clearer the real agenda of this Voice to Parliament becomes.

It is not a harmless ‘advisory body’ it is much much more - it (the body) will have the ‘Power of the Parliament’ to open the door to Treaty and Truth telling Makarrata (Punishment for invading their Country) and Albanese has promised to deliver all 3 key components of the Uluru Statement to First Nation’s people in full.

‘Voice to Parliament’ pages 17 to 26 of The Uluru Statement makes for essential reading in order to help you understand the composition of the Uluru Statement and assist you in making an informed decision about how you want to vote without emotional Yes Campaign blackmail and guilt being thrown in the mix.

On the subject of guilt and blackmail, children as young as 10 are being made to write letters in school apologising to Indigenous Australians for ‘taking their land’ and then told to go home and Vote Yes.

This is outrageous,

on The Voice.

Before you go to the polls, I encourage you to engage with reputable sources to better understand your vote.

Wherever you venture from there, I encourage you to think critically, engage meaningfully, and respond respectfully.

how to design programsnal culture.

Over time, Aboriginal people themselves saw what was needed.

At a gathering of representatives from all across Australia, they prepared the Uluru statement from the heart.

I have read it, repeatedly.

It is just one page.

The approaching Voice referendum responds to the Uluru statement.

under no circumstances should children be manipulated and used as ‘campaigning tool’ for the Yes Campaign, what an abhorrent and disgustingly low act.

If this Voice gets up racial tensions and division will become the norm and I don’t believe for one minute the vast majority of Indigenous Australians want this Voice, they too like a lot of people don’t know what it’s about or how it will work to close the gap for marginalised Indigenous people - the simple truth is, it won’t.

The Indigenous Canberra elites (Albanese’s Mates) want this Voice for their own empowerment and their own personal Albanese being the good

mate he is has promised he will deliver - what price for historical glory Albanese, what price?

Delsey Daley, Mount Hallen Use the Voice LET ME put it more clearly than before.

From about 1970, the Federal government has conducted an annual welfare program to help Aboriginal citizens.

The intent was that they should recover from their history since the arrival of European migrants, including the English.

The ambition was admirable. The delivery did not work.

Most likely this was because the Canberra executive bureaucracy had such a different lifestyle that they could not understand

It proposes that Aboriginal people be able to give advice to the Federal government and its executive about what actions will work, and what will not.

The executive will choose which advice to accept and which to dismiss.

The referendum wording says just that.

to the government of the day and it can change them at any time.

The Voice referendum all parties.

Over a long period of time a true harmony can emerge between Aboriginal people and new migrants as past sorrows slowly fade.

So we must stand tall, Yes.

Laidley Hospital to receive infrastructure upgrades

LAIDLEY Hospital is set to receive infrastructure upgrades and renovations as part of the Queensland Government’s Building Rural and Remote Health Program.

The Laidley Hospital is one of three regional hospitals included in the $1 billion infrastructure program and will receive investment aimed at enhancing its current health facilities. Planning for the upgrades will begin immediately, with construction expected to commence in mid-2024.

West Moreton Health Board Chair Michael Willis said the upgrades would enable the hospital to accommodate the anticipated growth and development in the area.

“Laidley is expected to

grow in the coming years, and this investment in the hospital will ensure they can continue to care for the community,” he said. Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman said the improvements

would be built to last for generations.

“They will incorporate contemporary, practical clinical spaces that utilise the latest in medical technology so that our health care workers can continue to deliver the best care possible,” she

Lockyer Valley Reginal Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said while it was great the state government was investing in the Lockyer Valley health system, work was needed to support a new regional hospital.

“While we applaud this announcement... we continue to call on the government to invest in the future of our region by purchasing land for a new regional hospital and by funding the use of all existing beds in our hospitals.”

Heat study to begin summer in-home trials

GRIFFITH University’s research project Ethos is partnering with older members of the community to study how to better protect them from extreme indoor heat.

Research fellow and thermophysiologist Dr Aaron Bach said the Ethos team were looking for rural and regional participants to trial an early warning system technology which monitors temperature and humidity in the home.

“It allows them to be noto approach unsafe levels, and we’re simultaneously monitoring indoor temperatures and humidity to get a better understanding of the exposure of heat at the home level,” Dr Bach said.

He said heatwaves in Australia were the leading

cause of death by any form of natural hazard, especially for older people.

“As we age, we have a reduced ability to thermoregulate,” Dr Bach said.

“Heat really places a lot of extra burden on the heart and cardiovascular system, and then if you have these

other underlying conditions it can make them worse and potentially lead to some sort of catastrophic event.”

Families, friends, and the Toogoolawah district embarked on a nostalgic journey with the station’s Memory Lane exhibit, exploring the station’s history from 1923 to the present day through vintage photos, log books and a display of ambulance vehicles.

Held at the Toogoolawah Showgrounds, the celebration night featured a dinner dance accompanied by a 100th-year cake, a live band performance, and medal awards presented, recognising the station’s volunteers

for their dedicated years of service.

Tanya King said the station started as a subsidiary station of Ipswich.

“The original brigade began in 1906, in 1923 they had a public forum, and a meeting was held, and it was decided that Toogoolawah would become an independent station,” she said.

New icon of BVRT

Last month the Esk Men’s Shed crafted a wooden signpost, a piece commissioned by Brisbane Valley Roasters, and it instantly became an ideal photo spot for trail riders.

Brisbane Valley Roasters owner Nick Higgins said people frequently stopped at the coffee shop on Peters St be-

cause of the sign.

“We have people drop in here and take photos with the sign and keep riding,” he said.

“It’s a little bit iconic.”

Men’s Shed member Steve Bird was the main creator behind the piece, Esk Men’s Shed secretary Paul Clifford said it impressed the locals as well.

“We got people coming in from town, from the community, saying ’that’s a great sign’,” he said.

You can ask R U OK every day

R U OK? Day was born from lived experience.

In 1995, the suicide of Barry Larkin left his family and friends in deep grief and with endless questions.

His son, Gavin knew that to genuinely change behaviour Australia-wide, a national campaign was needed.

From this realisation, and with Gavin’s passion, R U OK? Day was born.

The valuable insights and expertise of those with lived experience continues to be weaved through the annual campaign.

Gavin remained a passionate champion of the fact that a conversation could change

a life, even as cancer ended his in 2011.

September 14 is R U OK? Day.

This day reminds us of the need for conversations in mental health every day of the year.

That’s why it’s important for us to recognise that the

people we really care about may be feeling ongoing has happened to them, and to let them know we’re still here for them.

By making the time and space for an R U OK? conversation and listening with an open mind, we can help

the people in our world feel supported and, if needed, encourage them to access professional support long before they are in crisis.

Developing an atmosphere in your home, workplace, social or sports group that lets everyone know it is ok to talk about mental health

A chat can change a life

R U OK? Day inspires and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life.

You don’t need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener.

Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:

1. Ask R U OK?

2. Listen with an open mind.

Stanbroke remains people’s choice

STANBROKE marked four consecutive years winning People’s Choice Award at the Toowoomba and Surat Basin Enterprise’s Darling Downs Beef Battle on Thursday night, August 31.

The competition, held at Rumours International in Toowoomba, hosted nine beef brands for the 2023 competition with 500 guests voting for their favourite plate of beef.

While Stockyard took out the top gong on the night, Stanbroke domestic sales Chris Woolhouse said winning People’s Choice Award meant so much more, being ‘what the people want’.

“Beef is a very subjective thing, some people like grass, some people like grain and what have you,” he said.

“We just want to keep striving to succeed.”

Meat and Livestock Australia’s Samule Burke led the

kitchen to serve up 550kg of beef to the 500 patrons, testin identical cuts to the right

First shows a valuable insight

ROSEWOOD State High School students gained valuable exposure to the beef industry at this year’s agricultural shows.

Head of Department for Agriculture Darren Elliott said a dozen students from grades 9 to 11 were part of the newly formed show team.

“The kids are excellent,” he said.

“They’ve done really well and I’m really proud of them for what they’ve done this year.”

The school began its beef production area in 2019 and this year took the newly minted show team to the Rosewood and Ipswich

shows.

At the Rosewood Show, the team won the school competition in the inaugural Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge.

“We had a really good weekend, got really good feedback from members of the public, but also people who were showing commented on what a good job the kids did,” Mr Elliot said.

Year 9 student Chloe Simpson appreciated the show experience for the exposure it gave her to various breeds of cattle.

“What I’m aiming for is to start something up when I’m out of school that involves cattle,” she said.

“I thought this would be a

good learning experience.”

The school has Square Meaters, a breed ideal for students to learn with.

“They suit our kids really well,” Mr Elliott said.

“They’re fairly good natured to work with.

“Actually they’re very smart, they learn really quickly which is good, but they’re a little bit forgiving too.”

Next year, Mr Elliott and the team hope to go to the Ekka, with their animals or to participate in judging.

“A lot of work goes into that beforehand, but we’ll try,” he said.

“From that they get exposed to all these other people in the beef industry.”

Show team’s high achievements

LOCKYER District High School’s Show Team achieved top accolades consistently throughout this year’s show circuit.

The team showed the school’s Australian Lowlines at four shows, beginning with the Toowoomba Royal Show in April, Lowood Show in June, Gatton Show in July,

Cattle show team coordinator Judy Schultz said the team performed well at showing, handling, and judging.

“All year has been consisChampions, Champions, or Reserve Champions, so we ribbons,” she said.

“Kids have been placing in their handling classes… as well as the Junior Judging.

The team were commended for their work ethic, initiative, and cattle handling skills.

“It’s been consistent from day dot this year.”

Mrs Schultz said the team were ‘absolutely brilliant’ and she was very proud of their

“A lot of the private studs said to us ‘this team is fantastic’,” she said.

“Their cattle handling initiative, their public interactions.”

A Ford man since he was car was a 1965 GT Cortina, and he has a GT Cortina sitting beside the GT XR Falcon in his shed.

“The XR GT is in very original condition, being the original GT Gold in colour and all original interiors to match,” he said.

“It has only had a closed door respray by the last owner in 1986, keeping with the original colour.”

The GT is a hard car to

Ken said he had to have it.

“The previous owner had it stored in mint condition down in NSW and was originally a Melbourne-built and owned car,” he said.

Ken loves the sound of the XR GT with the rebuilt 289 V8 with just a slightly bigger cam than the original and loves how reliable the car has been while in ownership.

The XR GT is optioned with the 4-speed toploader manual gearbox with theted to any car.

The GT also has improved suspension and brakes, front disk brakes, rear brakes being bigger drum, and the Windsor 289 V8 has a 4BBL carb, revised camshaft and exhaust manifold as Ford was brewing a race-winning machine.

Ken said the GT gets a lot of attention and turns heads wherever he takes it for a drive.

“They made the Fords

tough back then, the clutch has never been changed from new,” he said.

The trophy shelf tells the story of the condition of this

GT Falcon, as there are quite a few trophies on display.

Ken and Jan love to get out to local car shows and meets and trailer the vehicle

on longer distance journeys for shows when they get a chance to travel.

Ken was most excited that he recently ran into 1967

Bathurst-winning driver Fred Gibson at the Leyburn Sprints, and he was kind enough to sign the glove box of Ken’s XR GT.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

September 11-17, 2023 ARIES

New Moon week is the ideal time to ditch bad daily habits and start afresh. It’s a juggle to get everything done but keep calm and don’t lose your cool! You’re unusually focused, but are you focusing on the right things? Work,

main areas where you need to make some overdue changes and adjustments. But – if you are too hasty and hot-headed – you could accident. So pace yourself.

TAURUS

The Sun and Uranus help you approach challenges in a proactive and adventurous way, and the New Moon encourages you to talk through issues with the people around you. Venus (your ruler) is visiting your domestic zone, so it’s time to enjoy home sweet home, as you cocoon in cosy comfort or entertain in low-key style. Your quote for the week is from Virgo philosopher Goethe: “He is the happiin his home.”

GEMINI

The New Moon promises a fresh start on the domestic front, as you entertain at home or tackle a DIY project. Plus, Mercury (your Friday night. Sharing a sport or hobby with don’t promise more time and effort than you can actually deliver. Attached Twins – plan a romantic rendezvous with your sweetheart. For some singles, love is waiting in your local neighbourhood.

CANCER

Thursday night’s New Moon highlights education, communication and community projects. There are opportunities for advancement via connections within your neighbourhood. But it will take creative teamwork and sustained effort to turn a lucky break into a long-term success. It’s also time to get some goals and dreams for the future. Remember, you can’t hit a target if you haven’t got one.

LEO

Mercury and the New Moon shine a spotto luxury-living, and you’re inclined to buy expensive things that you don’t really need. This week, do your best to avoid being an impulsive binge shopper. The more creatively and proactively you nurture your nest egg, the more it will gradually grow. The Sun/Uranus trine (on Friday and Saturday) encourages opportunities.

VIRGO

The silvery New Moon lights up your sign on Thursday night. Then Mercury (your power planet) turns direct on Friday night. So the weekend is a good time to update your wardrobe, change your appearance, launch a project, apply for a job or start a new phase of your life. Education, strategic planning, deep concentration and focused communication should gradually improve. Personal projects, creative pursuits and travel plans are also favoured.

LIBRA

Are you frustrated by ongoing problems?

October 12, so it’s time to take on challenges with a proactive approach and a courageous attitude. At the moment, fortune

It’s also a good week to tap into the well of creativity and inspiration, without and within. As Hollywood legend (and birthday great)

SCORPIO

Thursday night’s New Moon highlights your hopes-and-wishes zone, so be proactive about setting goals, dreaming dreams, and creating your preferred future. The weekend add some sizzle to a stale relationship. Most of all, enjoy yourself! Positive changes are coming, as you focus on projects that make your heart sing. Be inspired by birthday be spent, not to be saved.”

SAGITTARIUS

Have you been dragging your heels at work? Your career is set to improve, as Mercury moves forwards and the New Moon signals an exciting new chapter. So make the most of any fresh ideas, professional projects or job opportunities that come your way. Sunday’s Venus/Jupiter square increases exuberance and decreases patience. So slow down, Sagittarius, and be careful you don’t overindulge, over-exaggerate, over-promise or overcommit.

CAPRICORN

Many Capricorns have been feeling frustrated and uninspired. This week Mercury moves forwards, plus Uranus and the New Moon activate your education and adventure zones. So start thinking about where you’d like to go travelling – physically and mentally. Don’t let anyone dim your curiosity or diminish your dreams! Your motto for the moment is from birthday great, writer D. H. knowledge, and then going beyond.”

AQUARIUS

Each New Moon indicates a shift of gear in a particular area of life. This week the heavens highlight a fresh start involving money, an intimate relationship or trust issues.

nus trine. So the weekend is a wonderful time to travel, experiment and explore. You’ll also be extra curious as you dig up gossip, uncover a secret or start some controversial conversations!

PISCES

Close relationships and joint ventures are set to improve, as the New Moon and Mercury (moving forward) activate your partnership zone. With Saturn and Neptune both transiting through your sign, it’s also time to dream inspiring dreams and set long-term goals. Then follow them with passion, pur-

The ultimate Father’s Day for Redbacks dad

IT WAS Shane Reinke’s dream to play alongside his son Lockie with the Gatton Redbacks Football Club.

Shane, 45, has been with the club since it began in the early 90s to help the club. He coached Lockie, 16, since he joined the club in the U6 team, and two weeks ago

Shane, Lockie and the rest of the FQPL3 U23 Men’s ladder, then managed to beat ladder-top Rockville in the semis and Willowburn in championship for the second year running.

Shane scored the winning

goal for the home game “I hadn’t scored many goals, but it was 2-all at the

time and I snatched one and we went on to win that game with only ten minutes to go,” he said.

On Father’s Day, the Gatton U23 Men took on Willowburn at Clive Berghofer Stadium.

“We were in a good position at half time, leading second half they scored,” Shane said.

A hamstring injury put Shane on the bench alongside Justin Newby.

minutes to go and Lockie got the ball,” Shane said.

“Me and Justin were there on the sideline, probably more nervous than Lockie was I think.”

only season goal, scoring the team’s win with a penalty.

“Lockie came over after the game and said ‘happy Father’s Day’,” Shane said.

BLACK PIGS CELEBRATE SEASON

THE GATTON Black Pigs Rugby Union Club came together to commemorate their 2023 season at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre on September 8, recognising outstanding achievements from both the men’s and women’s teams amongst friends, family and supporters.

Among the notable

awardees for the night were Isikeli Ukauka who was recognised as the top A grade forward, Varinava Turaganana - honoured as and Emma Spinks, who picked up the Black Sows players’ player award.

Gatton Black Pigs president Jake Johnstone said the C grade side

the club this year.

Johnstone said a club goal for 2023 was to continue to branch out and get the community involved in rugby.

“One of the things I’m most proud is while I’ve been here, it’s been predominantly a uni-player team... not as many locals, so that was a big goal of ours... to get people from the community to come play for us.”
