Gatton House Fire

Locals are helping three Gatton men get back on their feet after they lost everything in a house fire last week.

The fire started in their William St home early on Thursday morning.

QFES Lockyer and Somerset Command inspector Tim Burchmann said the house was extensively damaged.

“On arrival the top level of the house was well involved and fire fighters went into action with multiple hose lines,” he said.

The fire was brought under control by 7.15am.

Frank Clissold was passing the house when the fire started around 5.30am.

“What amazed me was how much the fire took control in that time,” he said.

In 5 minutes much of the upper storey was engulfed.

Mr Buchmann stressed the importance of having working photoelectric interconnected smoke alarms to give early warning in the event of a fire.

He said the cause is unknown but is being investigated.

Matthew Loder has started a Go Fund me page to help them get back on their feet.

“I had a talk to the boys who live here and found out they’ve lost everything in the blaze,” he wrote on the page.

$40,000 a year on vandalism

BY SAM DANIELS A spate of recent vandalism across facilities at the Laidley Recreational Ground, Das Neumann Haus Museum and the Narda Lagoon have caused extensive damage, with Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan saying the deliberate acts are costing the Council up to $40,000 per year to repair.

“The community is having to pay for this and it’s crazy because we’d much prefer to have $40,000

going into a footpath or towards an extra playground at our parks,” Ms Milligan said.

“But instead, it’s spent on acts like this, which is just disgraceful.

“It’s disrespectful, how would they feel if they go home tonight and someone’s gone into their house and trashed it, I don’t think they would be appreciative.”

Ms Milligan said the really concerning part was that safety plates in light switches had been re-

moved, leaving live wires exposed.

“It’s just a few bad eggs that just wreck it for everybody else,” she said.

“If you know anything, contact Crime Stoppers.”

Laidley Police Senior Sergeant Regan Draheim said they are continuing to investigate and are currently reviewing the CCTV footage in the areas.

“We’ve increased our patrols in that area and we’re putting together an operation which will

target graffiti and wilful damage offences,” Sgt Draheim said.

“It’s very disappointing that this is occurring, it’s not the first time this has been an issue.

“Unfortunately, there are members of the community out there that don’t respect the area and what the council, in particular, has done to try and provide those facilities.

“We will do our best and we’re working with the Council to try and come up with solutions.”

Wellbeing day brings Lockyer together Leading into Mental Health Week, Lockyer Valley Regional Council’s Community Wellbeing Day delivered fun alongside valuable information.

Held at Lake Apex parklands, there were activities, music and entertainment throughout the day and into the evening.

Teens strengthen bonds

Lockyer District High School junior students banded together in a range of teambuilding and education sessions at their Development Day last Friday.

LDHS head of department for junior secondary school Ashleigh Gehrke said this was the first time the school held a development day at the end of the year.

“We’ve always done one at the beginning of the year for year 7s, but this is the first time we’re trialling one at the beginning of term 4, just as a bit of a reset after the holidays,” she said.

“It should be a really positive start to the final term for the year and we’ve included the year 8s this term.”

Team building activities helped students strengthen their bonds with each other, with their teachers, and foster a sense of belonging to the school community.

Compared to the development day at the start of the year, Mrs Gehrke said she could see how her class has bonded over the year.

Masks still mandatory

“It’s really nice to see my class working together, whereas at the start of the year they’re quite nervous about beginning high

school,” she said.

“Working together can be quite a challenge because they’re not familiar with their peers but they’ve really

worked throughout the year to build that sense of belonging to their class and to our school.”

Students also participated

in information sessions on respectful relationships, person hygiene, and a cyber safety program with Senior Constable Groube.

Grantham Calendar helps families with critically ill children The Grantham Community Calendar returns for 2022, thanks to the contributed photos from the local community.

This year, proceeds from Grantham Fuels’ 2022 community calendar will go to The Scarlett May Foundation.

The Scarlett May Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to support families with critically ill children and those whose children have passed.

They provide meal support for families while their children are in hospital, financial support for

counselling services, and keepsakes and mementos.

Founders Aidan and Renee Lamberth lost their baby girl, Scarlett May, to a rare disease when she was 10 months old.

There is a personal connection for Grantham Fuels owner Belinda Barton.

She used to work with Mr Lamberth and she has helped locals get in touch with the Scarlett May Foundation for support.

“There have been some customers at the servo who have had kids in NICU for whatever reason, and I’ve told them to reach out and

they’ve received meals from the Scarlett May Foundation,” she said.

“So I know they have supported our community.”

The calendar goes on sale at Grantham Fuels this Friday, on what would have been Scarlett’s eighth birthday.

Chief Health Office Dr Jeannette Young said with the easing of restrictions in certain areas last Friday, there is still a requirement for mask wearing in the 11 LGAs of Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Lockyer, Somerset, Logan, Redland, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Noosa and Scenic Rim. “While you no longer have to wear masks at all times, please make sure you carry one whenever you leave your home,” Dr Young said.

“People are still required to wear masks, in certain circumstances, when they are in one of the 11 South East Queensland LGAs. “Mask wearing is reviewed every two weeks, so please ensure you are following this health advice.”

Happy Birthday to us. At the risk of sounding a little indulgent, I must say it does feel good to reach our first birthday!

We all know the background as to why this newspaper was started and let me tell you, it is damn hard work launching a new newspaper. However, the response we have had from readers and advertisers has

been quite humbling, and is still quite hard to comprehend.

When the news came that there was no longer a print newspaper in the area, the overwhelming flood of calls was proof that the community still loved print. So, it is with a great deal of personal satisfaction that we have reached our one-year anniversary.

Milestones like this don’t just

happen. It requires a lot of hard work, and support from a lot of people.

Firstly, I must thank each and every one of the staff.

They are a wonderfully talented team of people, and they put their heart and soul into every edition of this newspaper. I would also like to thank the advertisers who support this publication whether week-

ly, fortnightly monthly or when you have a special event - your support is much appreciated.

Last not but least I would like to thank our community and loyal readers for your support, because without readers and advertisers we simply do not have a business.

Stick with us because we have some exciting initiatives planned for the next year. In

November we are launching ‘Your Town,’ a promotion to encourage shoppers to shop with our local businesses.

We are a newspaper that is passionate about supporting the local community that supports us. Thank you to each and every one of you for your support, it is greatly appreciated.

This week marks 12 months since the first edition of The Independent rolled off the press, and what a year it has been.

This has not only been a new job for me, but a new career.

Starting out as a cadet journalist at The Independent has been a steep learning curve, at times challenging but an

adventure I relish.

I’ve been welcomed so warmly by you, our wonderful readers, and it is always my delight to travel our region and meet you.

We adopted the motto ‘keeping the community in community newspapers’ and every edition I strive to keep this at the heart of what I do.

And it is because of your efforts that I can tell your stories, shine a light on your unsung heroes, share the good work happening in your town, and bring you the news that matters to you.

Thank you to every person who has reached out to us.

Thank you to every person who has welcomed me for an

interview and let me share your story.

This is a thriving community and there is always so much happening that is worthy of news coverage.

Colours of Somerset Six months of planning came together at Sunday’s Colours of Somerset Festival.

The Lowood High School students are working toward a Certificate II in Active Volunteering, and hosting the event helped them achieve this qualification.

Guided by Spirit of the Valley Events’ Idell Wadley, the students were involved

in all aspects of planning and execution.

“They formed a committee, they were involved in all the decision making, and for the last two days they have worked incredibly hard,” Mrs Wadley said.

The event was supported by government funding and sponsored by Lady on the Roof, Kindred Spirits, and The Independent.

Tragic death of loved principal

with the Gatton and District Historical Society A Gatton school principal’s tenure ended in tragedy when he drowned in Lockyer Creek after only a few years at the school.

John Sewell died on October 28, 1888.

The English man was thirty years old.

Gatton and District Historical Society member Kate Brial has been piecing together John’s story.

“In the information I’ve found, he was very intelligent, very well educated, one of the best teachers in the district,” Kate said.

“The fact that he’d been here

only a little over two years, he became a part of the community.

“And when he died, it was one of the largest funerals in Gatton at the time.”

John came to Australia as a teacher in 1886 and he was temporarily appointed to Gatton State School in July of that year.

He became the fourth principal of the school when succeeded Thomas John Hartley Nussey as principal in January 1887.

Founded in 1876, the school was little over 10 years old.

A trip to his often frequented water hole in Lockyer Creek was John’s last.

“There was a group of men that used to gather and bathe at a particular spot at the creek,”

Kate said.

“They had been teaching him to swim.

“On this particular day, the others were running late.”

John went ahead without the others and ventured into the creek alone.

“They believe that he slipped and has fallen into the water and drowned.”

The researchers at the society believe the spot was near where the railway line crosses the creek, a popular waterhole for Gatton locals at the time.

A magisterial inquiry into John Sewell’s death is in the Queensland State Archives, dated October 29, 1888.

In it, Thomas Miers recounts the morning of John’s death.

“At about half past nine a.m. yesterday I was going down to

the Lockyer Creek to bathe,” he wrote.

He encountered other young men, who had found John’s clothes on the bank.

Unable to locate their owner, the men suspected someone was in trouble.

“I sent my youngest brother William to tell Sergeant King that I believed there was a man in the water.

“Several [people] dived into the creek.

“At last Herbert England succeeded in recovering the body.

“He brought it to the bank of the creek and I recognised it as the body of John Sewell, the school teacher at Gatton State School.”

For his short time in the community, John Sewell made his mark on Gatton.

Artistic freedom knows no age

Tabeel residents proved artistic freedom knows no age during their unique dance performance, If Only I Could… on October 1.

The project paired residents with professional contemporary dancers to create a performance that was moving, poignant and at times humorous.

Director Angela Chaplin said the performance began its life three years ago as a series of dance workshops in several Lutheran Services Aged Care residences.

There was a phrase she heard crop up repeatedly

during the workshops.

“When we started running workshops with the aged care residents, I kept saying ‘would you like to dance?’ and they would say ‘If only I could,’” she said.

“Over and over again I heard ‘If only I could’ so that’s what I decided to call the show.”

The creative team found ways for the residents to dance again, seated or in a wheelchair, the residents became dancers.

Tabeel’s own Rosie Mercer, Angus Polzin, Lorraine Paroz, Amy Chandler, Jenny McCue, Max Oyston and Daphne Grosskopf were the

stars of the show.

Ms Chaplin said the seven residents were ‘incredible.’

“It’s their courage that I’m in such admiration of,” she said.

“They’re so courageous.”

Rediscovering the joy of movement through dance was at the core of the project.

“Dancing makes all of us happy,” Ms Chaplin said.

“Even if it’s just in our lounge room and that doesn’t go away just because you’re older.”

Working alongside the professional dancers, residents flourished with their renewed dance abilities.

“We saw their confidence

building all the time, and we saw their physical ability building all the time,” Ms Chaplin said.

“We saw people putting their hands in the air who couldn’t when we first started working with them.

“So there’s been a lot of additional benefits as well as the emotional benefits of dance.”

Tabeel staff joined the dancers and residents on stage and Ms Chaplin said the piece celebrated the staff who ‘work so hard.’

The story told through dance took a new direction during the workshop phase.

“The themes of this performance have been inspired by the residents’ experiences and the environment in which they live,” Ms Apelt said.

“The dancers and residents have also formed real friendships and this performance reflects those special bonds.”

The audience of friends and family were no doubt touched to see their loved one take part in this special performance.

The performance was supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Lutheran Services.

2 cups of cooked Basmati Rice 1 red onion finely chopped 1/2 red capsicum finely chopped 1/2 yellow capsicum finely chopped 1/2 green capsicum finely chopped 3 large sticks of celery finely chopped

1 cup of sultanas 1 green apple cored & diced (alternative to sultanas or additional) 1/2 tablespoon of turmeric 1/2 tablespoon of curry powder salt/pepper to taste 1/2 bottle of mayonnaise

Ingredients

Method

1. Cook rice according to packet directions. Once cooked, drain well and place in a large bowl to cool.

2. Finely chop red onion, celery and capsicum and place in a separate bowl.

3. When rice has cooled, add turmeric and curry powder to the rice and mix well (add more turmeric/curry to suit taste) Fold the rice over to give it a fluffy lift (add salt n pepper to taste).

4. Add the chopped vegetables and sultanas (and apple) to the bowl of rice, mix until just combined. Fold through the mayonnaise, add a bit at a time to get a moist consistency.

5. Serve with grilled chicken or pan fried pork chops and a green salad.

Classic Beef Show and Sale

The 28th Moreton Beef Show and Sale is on this Thursday at the Moreton Saleyards, with trophies and prize money up for grabs in the feeder classes.

Livestock Agent Jack Fogg said there are 32 classes being judged and the judging will start early in the morning, with sales commencing from 1pm.

“For the feeder steers and the feeder heifer classes there is $1000 in prize money,” Mr Fogg said.

“There will be around 600 head of cattle there on the day and there’s the crop, grain-fed and feed on classes.

“I think the market will be quite good because it’s currently dearer than it was this time last year, so we expect the sale to be very good too.

“The prices are as good as they are because there are

fewer cattle around.”

Jack expects around 100 spectators at the event, with a free barbecue lunch provided.

“There’s generally a good crowd there on the day, plenty of spectators, vendors and buyers,” he said.

Part of the proceeds from the day will go towards supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“It’s a great service and a fitting charity to donate to,” Mr Fogg said.

Somerset Council funding more emergency services Somerset Regional Council has contributed $372,701 to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) for the period ending 31 December 2021.

Rural Fire Brigade Coordination Committee member, Councillor Jason Wendt said,

“This is already turning out to be a bad fire season and we had 20 units attending a fire near Honeywood estate at Fernvale just in the past week.”

“These funds are meant for our partners QFES to make sure that our urban

firefighters and other emergency personnel have the resources they need to do the job.”

“While Somerset has become better prepared for disasters, we cannot become complacent about risk and it is important that

Somerset residents take steps to prepare themselves and their properties to manage their risks.”

“Knowing we have volunteer and paid emergency services ready to protect the community is obviously also a big part of managing risk

in Somerset.”

“A portion of every rate notice bottom line goes to help manage emergency service costs for this reason.”

“In addition to the $372,701, we are awaiting clearance from QFES to release around $154,000 to

local rural fire brigades,” Cr Wendt said.

UQ Bioherbicide an Australian first A natural weed control that will help manage one of Australia’s most invasive introduced species became the first woody weed bioherbicide to be granted federal regulatory approval.

The Di-Bak Parkinsonia fungal bioherbicide was developed at The University of Queensland by plant pathologist Professor Victor Galea and Dr Naomi Diplock. The co-developers used naturally occurring fungi that causes plants to die back to develop the bioherbicide.

Agricultural land prices to increase for 5yrs Australian agricultural land prices are set to continue to climb for at least the next five years – with the sharpest growth to 2023 – Rabobank says in its newly-released annual Agricultural Land Price Outlook.

“Not in the last 30 years have the macro settings been so supportive” of agricultural land price growth, the report says, with prices of most major agricultural commodities either at, or near, record levels.

The median price of agricultural land in Queensland increased by 15 per cent.

New car sales up in September

Australians have purchased 83,312 new cars in September which is an increase of around 21 per cent on the same period last year.

These figures represent continuing demand for new vehicles across all sectors despite lockdowns and the continued impact of the global microprocessor shortage.

Victoria recorded an increase of 96 per cent on vehicles sold during September 2020.

The Northern Territory, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia all recorded positive growth greater than 16 per cent. The ACT was down 35 per cent and New South Wales was down 8 per cent.

automotive manufacturers are rising to meet them. ‘’ “In many respects these figures give the industry great encouragement and excitement for what will be possible in 2022 when lockdowns will hopefully be a thing of the past.”

“The Sports Utility Market is up by 25 per cent and the Light Commercial Market up 27 per cent. With over 150 models on offer in these segments, competition amongst brands is delivering the best technology and lowest prices for Australian families looking to break out of lockdown with a road trip.” Mr Weber added.

Toyota was market leader in September with 24 per cent of overall sales. Mazda, Ford and Hyundai followed with recordings of 8, 7 and 6.5 per cent respectively. The highest selling model was the Ford Ranger, followed by the Toyota Hilux then the Toyota Corolla.

Escort that stands out At 20 years old, Dave Burnett was love-struck.

He had his heart set on the new 1980 Ford Escort MK2 RS2000.

He bought one brand new from the dealer and a lifelong passion began.

Life takes its turns, however, and Dave sold the car after four years.

“It was time for a change,” he said.

“Life was changing and I wanted to go in a different direction.”

However, he always had in the back of his mind that he’d like to own one again someday.

Twenty-six years and a few other rally-style cars later, the Kensington Grove father set out to find one.

“I found my passion for the RS2000 was still burning in my blood,” Dave said.

“So I started down the road to find an original RS2000.”

In 2010, he found what he was looking for: a red RS2000 1980 model, just as he’d owned all those years ago.

“I had resto in mind, to get it back to mint condition,”

The full rotisserie restoration took three years, every nut and bolt dismantled, paint entirely stripped and repainted in his favourite colour, Ford Mustang Grabber Orange with black trim.

He stripped the interior, and it was redone in original black with some Grabber

“And beautiful original Scheel seats to make sure you’re held in!” he said.

Dave finished with some upgrades to satisfy his revhead needs.

He rebuilt the original 2lt Pinto motor, added twin 40mm Webber side draft carburettors, a 5-speed manual T9 gearbox, and limited slip differential in the rear.

Coil over springs front and back make it handle more like a modern day rally car would.

“It was a must to add the flare kit, so I could put some 17inch wheels with 265 tyres to hug the roads when doing some quick corner work,” Dave said.

Fully registered, there’s no limit to where the Escort can go.

“Weekend drives with the wife are not restricted and we can go to any destination we wish,” he said.

“It’s such a fun car to drive, especially when it hits the tight winding roads and

mountain climbs.”

Whenever he gets the chance, Dave loves to take the Escort to Show and Shine events.

“This was a good year,” he said.

“I took out the Best Overall 1980s Era Car at the Leyburn Sprints Shannon’s Show and Shine event.”

He won the same title in both 2013 and 2016.

For the RS2000 to be winning at Show and Shines, eight years after its restoration, is a testament to the excellent condition he’s kept his prized RS2000 in.

Competitors came from across the region to compete and have a good time.

Laidley Bowls Club members said the weather was great and so was the laughter and good will of the bowlers.

Next week 500yds BOWLS TOOGOOLAWAH BOWLS CLUB NEWS On Sunday 3rd October it was our day to host the Brian Loveland Annual Cancer Charity Bowls Day. Thanks to Brian and the Toogoolawah Golf Club who hosted a successful golf day on the 2nd October. 54 players from totally inexperienced to experienced Bowlers graced our greens. We had 2 games with a delightful lunch in between and with raffles and side games managed to raise in the vicinity of $1000.00 for Cancer Research.

Thank you to Brian, a variety of sponsors and all those who attended to make this a great day. We look forward to hosting you all again in 2022.

Tuesday 5th October was Pub Day and what a great day it was. Winners on the day were Goff’s team: Yvonne Godfrey, Gloria Davis, Barry Smith and Barry Gough. Runners up were Trev’s team: Mike Dawe, Trevor Wright, Lindsay Ross and Stewart Rosenlund. First Round Winners were Team Gatton: Jim Baldwin, Tony Watson, Col Daniel and Ross Knight.

Second Round Winners were Woodford No.1 Team: Geoff Jones, Geoff Lacey, Peter King and Gerry Mooney. A very big thankyou to our sponsors

Thursday 7th October at home 6 players commenced their game of triples at 9.30am with the ladies subbing for each other due to the heat during the game. That meant everyone was a winner. Colleen Heath won the fruit tray raffle.

Draw for our Men’s Singles A Grade Championships was made. Gerrit Winkeler v Keith McWhirter and Len Smyth v John Greany. First Round Byes go to Ian Bradow and Wayne Thompson.
