IT TRULY is a wonderful time of year and a great time to be out and about in the community. Visiting Christmas carnivals, parties, and carols is certainly a highlight of the job and I hope you’ve enjoyed our social photos of the Christmas events taking place around the region. Next week, December 20, will be our final edition for the year before we return to

Help Helidon celebrate 150 years IN 2024 Helidon State School is celebrating its 150th Anniversary. It’s my understanding that less than 40 Qld schools have reached this impressive milestone. The corner-stone event for next year is our 150th Anniversary Fete after midday on Saturday May 11th 2024 which is the day before Mother’s Day, I believe. Our plan is to make this a memorable occasion for December update KASI officially opened our new quarterly art exhibition on Sunday 12 November with a fabulous afternoon on The Lakeside Deck. It was wonderful to have Mayor Lehmann, Councillor Wendt and their lovely wives in attendance as well. The People’s Choice winning entry was the painting titled ‘He Watches Over Me’ by artist Tracey Bennett, with the lucky ticket won by Lisa May. The exhibition will continue until early February 2024 so please pop into

your news stands on January 10. In it, we will have two pages of puzzles (some with a festive flavour) to keep you entertained over Christmas. This week our Your Town competition draws to a close. It’s a campaign we are passionate about and we hope you have embodied our ‘shop local’ message when searching for Christmas gifts this year.

A big thank you to all the participating businesses for jumping on board and to our sponsors for championing every town in our beautiful region. Remember to get your entries in today in time for the final draw at the Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival on December 15.

our school community and for the wider Helidon and Lockyer districts. I’m asking for the community to help us out and there’s a few ways you can do this. 1. Mark our Fete on your calendar for May 11th. 2. If you are a past student, staff member, parent or volunteer we’d love to hear from you or people you know who were, and especially hear any funny or interesting anecdotes and stories. We plan to have a special ‘Roll Call’

and take ‘Class Photos’ on the day. 3. If you have any interesting artefacts such as old books, photos, school uniforms, trophies relating to our school we’d love a copy or to borrow them on the day. 4. We are looking for local businesses to support us with one of our attractive sponsorship packages. Will your business provide some support in cash or kind, or donate a prize for one of our many raffles? 5. We’re looking for Market

Stall Holders to set up their tent on our oval on the day. Details for all of these are available on our school website at: helidonss. eq.edu.au/our-community/ 150-th-anniversary-in2024 or email me at: principal@helidonss. eq.edu.au . We are a great little community at Helidon, and we’re looking forward to sharing our 150th Anniversary with the community. Mark Robertson Principal Helidon State School

The AOM feature wall for December 2023 is dedicated to KASI’s roster members as a way of saying ‘thanks’ for their contribution in keeping the Gallery manned and open throughout the year. It is an honour to showcase a variety of artwork created by fourteen artist members including Michelle Lidweth, Noela Lowien, Lisa May, Tanya Davis, Di Taylor, Di Sattler,

Jan Russell, Dr Dawn Evans, Wendy Houston, Brian Wallace, Beverley Johnson, Ann Caporn, Helen Henrich and Kris Wheeler. All artworks are for sale. Please visit the Courthouse Art Gallery during December to view the fabulous range of artwork. KASI is once again participating in the Somerset Christmas Lights Competition, turning on our gallery lights from December 1 in conjunction with the Kilcoy and District Progress Alliance (KDPA) lighting of the town’s Christmas tree in Yowie Park.

Continuing in the community Christmas spirit, we also supported the amazing Kilcoy Christmas Carnival Committee by having a stall of original artworks for sale at the carnival on December 2. On behalf of all our members, KASI thanks the people of the Somerset and Moreton Bay Regions and, in particular, our local Kilcoy community for your support throughout 2023. Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas and we look forward to enjoying your company in 2024. Kilcoy Art Society Inc

Bringing soft and cuddly comfort in times of trauma

Australia Post to halve mail delivery

QUEENSLAND Country Women’s Association (QCWA) Glamorgan Vale Branch members generously handcrafted comfort teddies to donate to Lowood Police Station on December 7. The donated teddies are given out by police to console children affected by traumatic incidents such as traffic accidents or domestic family violence situations. QCWA Glamorgan Vale Branch member Colleen Phipps said the group sewed more than 50 teddies for the police and said it was a simple gesture in a difficult time. “It is to comfort them and to keep their mind off the accident,” she said.

Lowood unveils new facility as Queensland kindies prepare to go free QUEENSLAND Childcare Services celebrated opening a brand new KindyHub within the Lowood Early Education Centre on December 5-7 as kindies across the state prepare to go free from January 1, 2024. Lowood Early Education Centre Manager Tracey Siekai said the KindyHub would allow children to be immersed in programs such as Bush Kindy, Healthy Bodies and Grandfriends. “The new hub, which will

cater to 44 children, boasts exceptional facilities and resources that will help to create positive, collaborative, and enjoyable learning experiences,” she said. Queensland children attending a government-approved kindergarten next year will be provided 15 hours of subsidised kindergarten care per week. The program will be for children aged at least four years by June 30 in the year before they start school.

AUSTRALIA Post will end daily letter deliveries in 2024 through the Federal Government’s proposed changes to postal services announced on December 6. Through the changes, letters will be delivered every second business day for 98% of locations, while parcels, express and priority mail will still be delivered daily. The announcement came as a cost-saving measure after Australia Post reported losses of $200 million in 2022-23. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said Australia Post was a publicly-owned national institution, which for decades had ‘kept businesses operating, supported local communities and brought Australians together’. “However, Australia Post can’t stand still,” she said. “Consumer and small business demands are changing, and Australia Post also needs to adapt.” Australia Post CEO and managing director Paul Graham said the reform roadmap was a crucial first step in the modernisation of the service. “We’ve worked closely with our team members and the Communication Workers Union (CWU) to trial new ways to deliver that are better for our posties,” Mr Graham said. “The changes to the frequency of letter delivery will enable us to focus on what matters most to Australians - fast and reliable parcel delivery with better tracking technology and quicker turnaround times for eCommerce.”

Doing it for the butterflies BY JACOB HAYDEN

THE GARDEN of Eden – Grantham opened its doors to butterfly and botany lovers for its first ever tour on Sunday December 10. Co-owner Ray Archer said the private garden now had more than 400 butterflies fluttering about, including common eggflies, orchard swallowtails, and large grass yellows. Mr Archer, his wife Delphine, and their team of volunteers toured visitors around the garden, teaching the young and old about the various butterfly species and their favourite plants. Sister location Bribie Island Butterfly House has been running for more than six years. “We just had our party there the other night, after six years we’ve had over 120,000 visitors in six years with no advertising,” Mr Archer said.

“We’re only open two days a week, 100% run by volunteers, and we’ve given away over half a million dollars in six years to many different charities.” Entry to the Garden of Eden is only $5, and goes

towards upkeep of the garden and butterfly breeding efforts. “In the wild if a butterfly lays its eggs, it lays perhaps 100 eggs,” Mr Archer said. “Only 2% of those eggs survive to hatching, world-

wide.” Grantham resident Steve Rose visited the garden on Sunday with his children, and said he was very impressed and felt very welcomed. “I was quite surprised by

how many butterflies there are, one of them landed on my hand,” he said. “There’s lots of variety of flowers and fresh fruit… my daughter helped herself to some strawberries, which was quite nice.”

“A church nowadays continuing for 125 years is a special occasion, as many of the smaller country churches have had to close down,” she said. “We had Bishop Jeremy Greaves and next week on Saturday he’s going to be installed as the Archbishop of the Brisbane Diocese, and Metropolitan for the province of Queensland. “He said that churches are built with faith and it’s faith that continues them.” Bishop Greaves also blessed the St Mary’s

pantry. “We’ve only had it open and running for just over a month,” Rev Chambers said. The service also had a display of a dozen wedding dresses. “It was interesting to see the change in style of wedding dresses over the years,” Rev Chambers said. “The ladies outdid themselves with the lunch and we had a beautiful cake with a picture of St Mary’s on the cake, donated by Coff and Co.”

Faith kept St Mary’s doors open for 125 years A KILCOY church celebrated 125 years of service to its community on Sunday December 10. St Mary’s Anglican Church Reverand Jilleen Chambers said it was a wonderful celebration. “We had a special baptism for a little boy named Declan Mudge, he’s the great, great, great grandchild of Arthur Arnold who built the church,” Rev Chambers said. “We had one person join the church, Therese Ferris. “We had over 100 people

Missing memorial plaque BY GRACE CRICHTON

A MEMORIAL plaque commemorating a WWII air base in Lowood has been removed from its site, prompting calls for its return. Royal Australian Air Force No. 23 Squadron Association Chaplain Reverend Robert Heathwood discovered the plaque was missing when he visited the WWII RAAF Lowood Airfield Memorial at Mt Tarampa on November 28. Rev Heathwood said he was ‘aghast’ to find the Daisy Road memorial plaque had been removed, presumably stolen. “This was a memorial dedicated to the legacy of those men and women who served at RAAF Base Lowood,” he said. Rev Heathwood said removing the plaque was done in ‘complete contempt’ of the sacrifice and service of those who fought in the war. The Daisy Road Memorial Plaque was installed by RAAF No. 23 Squadron Association on August 4, 2022. No. 23 Squadron Association historian George

Hatchman questioned the motivation of the person or people responsible “Why would they do that, was it just to get the copper value out of it?” he said. “It bothers you that there are people in the community that think nothing of

history and sacrifice and knock those things off for the sake of getting a few bloody dollars for them.” Mr Hatchman and Rev Heathwood hoped the ‘Christmas Grinch’ would return the plaque to the Lowood RSL. Lowood Police Station Officer in Charge Senior Ser-

geant James Bromley said it was a timely reminder for the public to make reports for such incidents. “We are making it easier for matters to be reported to police on some types of crime,” he said. “If you don’t need police to attend immediately, you can fill out an online report

for some types of crime, traffic incidents and complaints.” If you have information for police in relation to the stolen plaque, contact Policelink on 131 444 or by providing information using the online suspicious activity form 24hrs per day at www. police.qld.gov.au/reporting

Smoking ceremony for safe space in school BY GRACE CRICHTON

MOUNT Whitestone State School hosted the Yagara Dancers for a smoking ceremony in their new yarning circle on December 1. They were joined by students from neighbouring small schools Mt Sylvia and Ma Ma Creek for the ceremony and First Nations cultural workshops. Yagara Dancers Dirri’Ya-Gamil Kapithun, Uncle Henry Thompson, and Loren Thompson performed the traditional ceremony within the circle and explained the significance of the practice to the students. “With this practice, we incorporate the green leaves from special trees and we bring it to our fire, which is the constant reminder of change,” Dirri’Ya-Gamil said. “In this ceremony, it scares

off all the bad spirits so that we can cleanse the space that allows for healing to take place.” Students were invited to walk past the fire, think positive thoughts, and use the smoke ‘like a shower’ to cleanse themselves. Dirri’Ya-Gamil said the smoking ceremony was

an important practice for travellers. “It’s used for many occasions, like when we welcome people who are coming to either stay within our lands, or passing through,” he said. Mt Whitestone State School principal Karen Lynch said the yarning circle was a safe space for students

to talk about their feelings. “We also thought it was really important to make sure we had the blessing ceremony to get rid of that negative energy and to bring a First Nations perspective into the school,” she said. The students then participated in dance and boomerang throwing workshops.

Caravan park wins people’s choice ESK Caravan Park made waves at the Queensland Tourism Industry Council Awards, winning Gold in the RACQ People’s Choice Award and Silver in the Caravan and Holiday Parks category. General manager Emily Willoughby said the accolades were significant given the formidable competition from other top-tier accommodation providers. “The fact that this was our first time being nominated makes the receipt of the Silver and Gold awards all the more meaningful and humbling,” Ms Willoughby said. “Our warm country hospitality, combined with the excellent amenities we offer, played a pivotal role in securing these accolades.” Ms Willoughby said the people’s choice award

held a special place in the hearts of the team. “It reflects the direct endorsement and support of our incredible guests,” she said. The silver medal underscored the visionary efforts of park owners Paul and Jackie Lawson. “Their relentless commitment over the past 11 years has been instrumental in the continuous evolution of the park, shaping it into the award-winning destination it stands as today,” Ms Willoughby said. “We’re proud to share that we received tourism grant funding from the Australian Government via Austrade, and we’re deeply grateful for this support which has afforded us the opportunity to bring our vision to be an accessible destination for travellers of all abilities to life.”

A quilt of appreciation for our war heroes BY JESSE HAMILTON

THE hard-working Hatton Vale Happy Crafters received a certificate of appreciation for their quilt donations to the Quilts of Valour Australia initiative on December 4. The quilts aid foundation aimed to cover service members and veterans impacted by war with comforting and healing quilts. Quilts of Valour Australia founder Helen Comport said each part of the quilt represented a layer of appreciation Australians had for their service heroes. “The wadding, the filler is the centre of the quilt, it’s warmth,” she said. “It represents our hope that this quilt will bring comfort, peace and healing.” Hatton Vale Happy Crafters group coordinator Valerie Harmer said the group had

AFTER a century and two years, Ivy Heck is still as sharp as a tack. On Friday December 1 she celebrated her birthday with her four children. “It’s fantastic to have my family here, I do appreciate it,” Ivy said. “I’ve got a great faith in God, I think it’s kept me going lots of times. “Sometimes you have your down days, but we always get chirping again.” Born in Marburg in 1921, Ivy spent most of her life in Glamorgan

Vale where she married into a dairy farm with her husband Les in 1940. In her retirement, Ivy did volunteer work with the Blue Nurses shop in Lowood, and increased her involvement with church and the Country Women’s Association Her favourite things to cook were sponge cakes, scones, jams, and her rosella jam won first prize at state level in CWA. Today she is looked after by staff at Blue Care Lowood Glenwood.

run Creating a healing environment Santa features kids BY JACOB HAYDEN

THE CREATIVE Healing Hub is welcoming Laidley residents and the wider community to attend craft classes and healing sessions to bring wellness to their lives. Hub director Suzie Gardner said she, Kerryn Weier, Liz Maher, Gayle Pilon and Alvin Nand came together to create the hub after deciding the community needed more social wellness. Suzie leads a craft workshop at every Friday morning Toy Wiz, Laidley, where crafters create simple but beautiful pieces. “They’re simple techniques to make something nice, which people can go on to sell if they wish to,” Suzie said. “People are so hard-up for cash these days, try and find a gift for twenty bucks… you can come here and make it, and people love it because you made it.” For some, being able to speak with like-minded people is enough of a reason to visit. “You can just come down and have a coffee if you like, you don’t have to do anything,” Suzie said. “A lot of people will just call in and have a coffee, and off they’ll toddle.” The craft sessions complement other activities offered by the hub,

treats and classic cars

including ‘Corks n Canvases’ led by Alvin on Saturday afternoons, and healing activities with Gayle. “Gayle came on board to do some wellness with us, she does sound healing, meditation, reiki, tapping,” Suzie said. “Gayle and I have been doing a chakra dance on a Thursday night for nearly two years now, and it’s

only just become popular. “We’ve got a nice crowd of about ten people now.” Another drawcard for the hub is its leather workshop with Allen Pilon. “You get to take home a belt, you learn how to make it, you dye it, you put your name on it,” Suzie said.

“We make bracelets and bands, great little Christmas gifts. “Allen’s been around for many years, he has a little market around here selling sandals and things like that, and he has a big following.” Call Suzie for information about craft workshops and other Creative Healing Hub events on 0421842992.

PREPARE for some family fun this Sunday as the Fairway Estate Community Group directs a classic car convoy in Hatton Vale, delighting lolly enthusiasts by handing out treats along the streets. The Santa Run will start and finish at Shell Rusty’s Hatton Vale at 10am and will travel down 26 roads across Hatton Vale. The convoy will feature classic bikes and trucks filled with candy as well as the Queensland Rural Fire Brigade fire truck. Event organiser Mark Milliner said the Santa run was a fun event for all and there were lolly donation bins at the Hatton Vale IGA and Plainland Woolworths for anyone who wanted to donate treats. “It’s a wonderful event, and it’s an important time of the year to lift people’s spirits,” he said. “It’s great for the kids, the adults, grandparents love it too because of the classic cars.”

up to the celebration, worrying about the presents, the meal preparation and spending time with loved ones. I suspect that most of us secretly dread aspects of this annual holiday. Even the most self-assured amongst us have expectations to live up to. Self imposed expecta-

tions are the worst. Who really cares if great aunt Mildred doesn’t like your version of the traditional Christmas pudding? Some options to minimise the emotional and financial impacts of the upcoming silly season: 1. There is an alternative to the traditional roast meal; assorted cold meats and

salads for the main festivities. Dips and chips to start, with fruit salads and pavlova for dessert. 2. Invite everyone to bring a plate of an interesting or unusual salad or dessert. 3. Make a list of who is bringing each item, so you don’t get ten of the same dish. 4. Instead of gift giving, ask

everyone to donate twenty dollars to their favourite charity, or nominate a charity for the donations to go to. 5. Ask everyone pops twenty dollars into a jar, for a trip to the beach, ten pin bowling or the movies. Make it a fun boxing day family activity. Planning ahead can save stress and make life easier for this holiday season.

Gatton Taxi Services unveils new, smarter and faster booking system

GATTON Taxi Services has adopted a fast and reliable way for customers to book their next trip. The SmartMove system provides drivers with an efficient central booking and GPS tracking system that ensures higher customer booking reliability. Gatton Taxi Services owner David Pearson said customers can call Gatton Taxis or book through the SmartHail app which notifies customers to their nearest driver. “When you ring now, we have a booking system that we use where all the leads are recorded and go straight to a tablet in each car,” he said. “The old way was to just phone and text, and you could miss people if you were busy.” “This booking system tightens it up when previously maybe a cab could be late.”

Mr Pearson encouraged seniors to make the most of taxi subsidy cards as the service also offered ease of

access vehicles for physically impaired people. “We have wheelchair-access vehicles so if you’re

physically impaired, we can get you in and out safely,” he said. “There are also taxis we

have that seniors can use TSS cards, which are taxi subsidy cards designed to assist seniors.”

said anyone who would be alone on Christmas Day was welcome. “It was started to provide a meal for the people who... were on their own and they weren’t going to be getting a Christmas

dinner,” she said. “But now it’s evolved. “There are more lonely people out there than there are poor, it’s now for people that are home alone.” Please arrive from 10:30am for lunch to be

served at 11:30am. It will be held at the Laidley Showgrounds Hall, use of which was donated by the Laidley Show Society. “There’s no charge involved for them but it’s nice if you get a donation,” Mrs

Fire ant biosecurity zone changes

QUEENSLAND’S fire ant biosecurity zones have been adjusted to align with the Interstate Plant Quarantine (IPQ) zones as of December 1. This will mean that the fire ant biosecurity zones will be reviewed monthly and updated according to new fire ant detections. New areas in the Lockyer and Somerset regions included in the biosecurity zones are Mount Sylvia, Mount Whitestone, Spring Creek, and Wivenhoe Hill, which all have partially covered areas included in the zone. The changes are being introduced as part of the new Fire Ant Response Plan 2023-2027 and will help to reduce the risk of human-assisted spread of fire ants including:  Reducing confusion regarding intrastate and interstate movement

restrictions.  Provide a more targeted approach to fire ant management.  The new fire ant biosecurity zones will extend 5km beyond known fire ant detections, rather than the biosecurity zones following suburb boundaries. Fire ant biosecurity zones apply to all individuals and businesses who work with organic materials sourced from within Queensland’s fire ant infestation. This includes soil, hay, mulch, manure, quarry materials, turf and potted plants. There are two fire ant biosecurity zones. Zone 1 covers suburbs that have received or are scheduled to eradication treatment and Zone 2 covers suburbs yet to receive treatment.

New locations in the Lockyer Valley and Somerset regions have been added to the fire ant biosecurity zones interactive map, available for download at fireants.org.au PHOTO: NATIONAL FIRE ANT ERADICATION PROGRAM

Food security report released

A Senate Inquiry will investigate food prices in super markets, a move welcomed by the National Farmers Federation. PHOTO: UNSPLASH

Supermarket inquiry welcomed A SENATE inquiry into Supermarket Prices was welcomed by Australia’s peak farm body, who said farmers were ‘fed up’ with being kept in the dark about agricultural supply chain prices. National Farmers Federation (NFF) president David Jochinke said supply chains lacked transparency. “We can see what people pay at the checkout, and we know what we’re getting at the farm gate, but who clips the ticket in the middle is hidden from view,” Mr Jochinke said. Mr Jochinke said the pressures on farmers were reaching ‘boiling point’. An AUSVEG survey earlier this year showed 34% of vegetable growers were considering leaving the industry, while a livestock market crash was not reflected in supermarket prices.

The Senate established the Select Committee on Supermarket Prices on December 6 to report on the price setting practices and market power of major supermarkets. Greens Economic Justice spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said ‘Coles and Woolworths were making billions in profits by price gouging in a cost of living crisis’. “This inquiry is a critical step toward dismantling the market concentration that’s led to unfair pricing and stifled competition,” Mr McKim said. “It is about ensuring that Australians can afford to eat without being exploited, and that suppliers are treated fairly.” Coles CEO Leah Weckert and Woolworths Group CEO Brad Banducci have both confirmed they will participate in the inquiry.

Nationa Famers Federation released an issues paper last week on market price transparency which outlines steps the government could take to improve fairness and price transparency for farmers which would flow on to better outcomes for consumers at the checkout. IDEAS PUT FORWARD IN THE ISSUES PAPER INCLUDE:  mandatory price reporting and disclosure;  increased powers for the ACCC to access supply chain data;  further reforms to unfair contract terms;  improving whistleblower protections and access to justice; and,  greater uptake of collective bargaining. The committee is to present a final report by May 7, 2024.

THE AUSTRALIAN Parliament’s Agriculture Committee has released its report for its inquiry into food security in Australia. The inquiry examined ways to strengthen and safeguard Australia’s food security, focussing on production, supply chains and key inputs, as well as climate change, biosecurity and food insecurity. Committee Chair Meryl Swanson MP said despite Australia being one of the most food secure countries in the world, recent developments both at home and abroad have shown food security presented real and growing challenges to the nation. “Food security is not

something that any of us can take for granted,” Ms Swanson said. “COVID-19, floods, the effects of the war in Ukraine, and outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease and Lumpy Skin Disease in Indonesia have highlighted risks to our food system. “Systemic change is required so that all Australians, and those that depend on Australian food production, will be food secure. “Consultation, cooperation, coordination and innovation are the keys to food security.” The Committee made 35 recommendations to address food security in Australia, including creating a

comprehensive National Food Plan, appointing a Minister for Food, establishing a National Food Council, developing a National Food Supply Chain Map, measures to facilitate innovation in the production of food, and measures to eliminate food waste. The report also proposed measures to improve sustainability and resilience in the food supply chain, improve access to labour, and reduce food insecurity. During the inquiry, the Committee held 24 public hearings, visited numerous sites around Australia, and received 188 submissions from individuals, industry and community groups and government bodies.

MY RIDE

’66 Ute receives impressive makeover BY DAVID GREER

FROM a very young age Brightview resident Anthony Crouch was car mad. Having car enthusiast parents, Anthony grew up around the likes of XY GTs and XU1 Toranas in the family, along with many others over the years. A Hot Wheels collector as a boy, Anthony has hundreds in his collection. Anthony said he always liked the 60s era cars and owned a couple, including an XK wagon and the XP Ute. Admitting he has had an enormous number of cars in his short driving history, Anthony, only 21, said he had been buying cars before getting a licence, flipping them to make money to spend on the ones he enjoys working on, driving and even racing. Anthony’s first car as a teenager was a 1973 Mazda 1000 ute, which he grew out of like a pair of shoes, standing at least 6’2” in height. Anthony, now a fully qualified mechanic for Lockyer Valley Ford, knows his way around cars. He said the XP was straight-bodied when he bought it and decided to venture into his first-ever complete rebuild, stripping

a 250ci pre-crossflow motor and a Borg Warner 35 auto gearbox. The vehicle has Standard Stromberg carburettor and Pacemaker extractors put into a twin exhaust system An-

thony had custom-made. Anthony said the XP was a fairly narrow style car, he transformed a Centura diff to fit perfectly under the rear. XF Falcon front brakes are also being set up by Anthony

to make sure the XP can stop. A full rubber kit was put throughout, and the underlay and carpets were also done. The XP has been through a thorough check for rust and welded where needed, with

the bodywork done and then painted by Anthony himself in a Satin Beige metallic inside and out, as all the 60s cars had the steel trim inside typically matching one of the outside colours.

Speedway lovers celebrate a century BY JACOB HAYDEN

FORMER motorcycle speedway racer and announcer Bob Johnston from Lowood ventured out to Willowbank Raceway on December 9 to catch up with old friends and reminisce on the 100-year history of speedway. Johnston took to the microphone on Saturday and spoke about the history of the sport in Australia. “In 1923 an Englishman out of New Zealand, Johnnie Hoskins, had a thing called the Electric Light Carnival at the Maitland Showgrounds, and it was a rousing success,” Johnston said. “As the years ensured, it got to a stage where there was 10-15,000 people at a speedway. “It came to Brisbane and the big track was South’s

football ground at Davies Park. “In 1927 the Labour Day handicap paid 400 guineas to win, that is three years’ wages in those days, and there were something like 15,000 people there.” Johnston said the bikes used back then were nothing like today, being cast iron, and so hard to ride it felt like they ‘pulled your arms out of your socket’. “A lot of them were just road bikes, there were Excelsiors and JAPs and all the rest of the brands like BSA and Norton, until they finally came up with thing called a Prestwich engine, sort of the grandfather of all speedway engines,” he said. “Like everything else, things changed, but surprisingly enough the lap times are not that remarkably different.

“If you were running at Davies Park on a modernday now, you would probably do a race six or

seven seconds faster. “In those days they didn’t have methanol, they had whatever fuel they could

get – it could have been half kerosene.” Even today, speedway is not for the faint of heart. “There’s no brakes, there’s no gears, it runs methanol, no suspension… to stop you just shut it off and throw it sideways,” Johnston said. The English eventually grabbed hold of the sport, and today it is the second biggest sport in Poland. “I started riding motorcycles when I was four years of age,” Johnston said. “I first rode a speedway bike at the Clermont Showgrounds in 1959 and it belonged to a gentleman by the name of Aubrey Lawson, who represented Australia many times overseas. “I got bitten by the bug and once that bug bites you, you can’t get out of it.

“I was never really a good solo rider on speedway and I went to sidecars and rode Vincents and things like that. “Unfortunately, my career got cut short when I had a nasty one at Ipswich and I lost my passenger and I never really wanted to ride again on side cars on speedway.” As an announcer and referee, after 57 years Johnston is still an official for Motorcycling Australia. He met with old friends on Saturday, including former international racer Jamie Habbin, also known as ‘the Pink Panther’, who rode speedway for his first time in 30 years. “He first came out here as a 17-year-old and I was a referee for speedway… I took him under my wing and we became very good friends,” Johnston said.

Power of $10

The power of spending $10 locally

If every resident of the Lockyer Valley, over the age of 12, spent $10 a week over the year locally instead of outside the region, the economy would have a direct economic uplift of $18.9 million. The total economic impact from this increased local spending would be an uplift of $26.2 million to the local economy. An additional 187 new local retail jobs could be created, just by changing where we spend $10 each week.

Scan for more details

If the change in spending location for that $10 was only for six weeks during the Your Town ‘Buy Local, Think Local’ campaign, the local economy would benefit by $2.2 million.

Federal support for local homebuyers THE FEDERAL Government introduced legislation into Parliament establishing the new Help to Buy scheme last month. Through the scheme, the government will support eligible homebuyers with an equity contribution between 30% and 40%, and no lender’s mortgage insurance payable on the equity loan. Homebuyers will need a minimum 2% deposit and will have lower ongoing repayments while they participate in the scheme, providing long-term relief. Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said Help to Buy was intended to support low and middle-income Australians who otherwise would not be able to purchase a home. “This is one of the most significant housing reforms in a generation. It won’t just be a leg up into home ownership with savings from a smaller deposit, it will provide long-term relief to participants in the scheme,” Mr Neumann said. “In fact, Help to Buy could help eligible new homeown-

ers save hundreds every month on their mortgage. “Our ambitious housing reform agenda is working across the board with more help for homebuyers, more help for renters and more help for locals needing a safe place for the night, and this scheme is a key part of that.” Help to Buy is based on existing shared equity schemes that operate in some states and territories.

DECEMBER 13, 2023

THE LOCKYER AND SOMERSET INDEPENDENT

MOORE WEEKLY STARS December 11-17, 2023 ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

Mighty Mars (your power planet) and the fiery New Moon encourage you to focus on your hopes and dreams for the future. The more ambitious your aspirations, the better! You’ll also shun superficial encounters with others, preferring deep and meaningful conversations with family and friends. But remember that Mercury is in retrograde mode from Wednesday until January 2. So smart Rams will try extra hard to be prudent, patient and persistent.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

Your ruler Venus is visiting your relationship zone (until December 29) which favours romance, friendships, joint ventures and socialising with work colleagues. Then Mercury starts reversing through your travel and adventure zones (from Wednesday) so any weekend trips or longer holidays (interstate or overseas) should be planned extra carefully and then rechecked extra thoroughly. On the weekend, friends and finances could be a confusing mix.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

Tuesday night’s New Moon heralds the rebirth of an important relationship of the romantic, platonic or business variety. But remember, Mercury (your ruler) turns retrograde on Wednesday so financial partnerships, tax matters and deep, dark secrets must be handled with extra tact and care. Double-check everything twice! On the weekend, someone tells you something in the strictest of confidence, but are they telling the truth – and can they be trusted?

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

It’s a wonderful week to start a new diet or rejig your fitness routine, as proactive Mars and the New Moon activate your health-and-wellbeing zone. Then Mercury starts reversing through your relationship zone on Wednesday, so do your best to surround yourself with interesting, non-flappable people. As birthday great Jane Austen wrote: “My idea of good company is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation.”

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

Tuesday night’s New Moon is all about children, friends and creativity. On Wednesday, Mercury starts reversing through your wellbeing zone. So it’s a suitable week to revise your daily diet and fitness routine, as you choose healthier food options and a form of exercise that you enjoy. On the weekend the Sun (your power planet) squares Neptune, so be on alert for confusing information, fake news, and dodgy deals (especially involving friends and finances).

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

The New Moon (on Tuesday night) sets the stage for a fresh start involving your home, a family member or a domestic project. But do you have unrealistic expectations about a close relationship? This week Mercury (your patron planet) starts reversing through your romance/ friendship zone, and the Sun squares Neptune in your partnership zone. So it’s time for a major reality check as you reassess memories from the past, and recalibrate your present attitude.

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22)

The week starts well with a positive connection between Mercury and your power planet Venus. So Monday and Tuesday are fabulous days to communicate, circulate, socialize and fraternize. But – from Wednesday onwards – tread carefully with a fragile family member, as Mercury starts reversing through your domestic zone. If a recalcitrant relative sends negative vibes your way, then take the advice of birthday great Taylor Swift and “Shake it off!”

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Expect some hiccups as Mercury starts reversing through your communication, education and travel zones on Wednesday. If you slow down, think before you speak, and double-check your itinerary and appointments, then you’ll manage fine. Plus – with Venus vamping through your sign (until December 29) – it’s time to celebrate being a strong, sexy, sassy Scorpio! In the words of Taylor Swift (who turns 34 on Wednesday): “Just be yourself, there is no one better.”

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21) This week you’re ready to sparkle and shine, flirt and have fun, as amorous Mars and the fiery New Moon light up your sign! It’s time to shake off the shackles of other people’s expectations and, instead, be the authentically real you. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great Taylor Swift: “Be yourself, chase your dreams, and just never say never.” But Mercury starts reversing through your money zone so try to reign in your shopaholic tendencies.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) On Wednesday, Mercury starts reversing through your sign. Mercury is the planet of clear thinking, communication (talking, texting and writing), transport, travel, commuting, commerce, computers, media and the internet. So – when it’s retrograde – it’s not a good time to do the following things: sign contracts; start a job or business; buy a phone, computer, car or home; launch a website; install new software; go on a business trip or embark on a holiday.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18) Are you feeling confused, Aquarius? Have you been questioning your goals in life? Or does it seem as if you’ve got the worries of the world on your shoulders? Take a step back and view things from a wider perspective. Doing good deeds will leave you with a warm inner glow. So think up some dynamic ways you can help those who are less fortunate. As Yoko Ono (a fellow Aquarian) observes: “Helping yourself is connected with helping others.”

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20) This week – with a New Moon and Mercury turning retrograde – it’s time to do anything with an ‘re’ in front of it: revise, rehearse, review, remember, return, recover, reconnect. Especially in areas involving career, colleagues, peer group, hopes, goals and dreams. But take extra care on the weekend when the Sun is at odds with your patron planet, Neptune. A personal project could become very confusing, or a professional opportunity may be too good to be true. COPYRIGHT Joanne Madeline Moore 2023

Well done to both our Under 10s and 13s teams and all those involved, have a safe and Merry Christmas. LOCKYER A GRADE In a wildly unpredictable competition, two teams won by 7 runs or less, and the table compressed even further, with all six teams still in the hunt. It’s barely conceivable that 66 would ever be enough runs for Helidon, yet they put the Roos away for 59, when a win was within sight. Mark Ashley, with 23 n.o held

Helidon together, while Alex Dallinger bagged an extraordinary 4-9. In reply, Cameron Utz on 16 n.o tried hard, but young Jackson GreenSmith continued his form with 6-16. Another closey, when the Mulgas on 9-163, repelled the hard closing Gatton Fordsdale, who were denied on 155. Dean Granzien continues his dominance with 57, while both Riley Wheeler and Hayden Kleidon bagged 3 wickets, For Gatton Fordsdale, Daniel Ost, 65 and Steve Kleidon, 34 almost reached the target. Alex Emmerson, continued to take wickets with 3-41. Forest Hill, who have often been without luck, got past Ropehill in a hard fought game. Ropehill’s 132 looked competitive, through Michael Litzow 39 and Rohan Janke 27. Evergreen Jason Neuendorf was best for the Goats with 2-24. For a long while, Ropehill looked the winners, but emerging young talent, Brody Horne 44n.o and captain Harry Engel, 27 steered the Goats home. Matthew Smith claimed 3-35. Going into xmas after next Saturday, all teams will arm wrestle for a top three finish in the new year. VALLEY VIKINGS A blazing century by Brock Zischke and 50 by Rogan Utz should have allowed the Vikings to do better than 10-205 against Centrals. In reply, the home side were cruising at 0-82 with the bowlers finding no chinks against classy batters. Early wickets will be needed next week. Kilcoy Yowies enter global nines rugby stage BY JESSE HAMILTON

TAKING centre stage in the world of rugby league nines, the Kilcoy Yowies open men’s team participated in The Fijian Cup nines tournament on December 1-2. The tournament featured top locally qualified Fijian sides up against interna-

tional clubs from Australia and New Zealand, with the Kilcoy side securing victory in one out of three games. Kilcoy Yowies president Rob Fischer said it was an international debut for many players after securing an invitation at a previous nines comp. “This is the first time for

many playing in an international competition and for some first time out of the country,” he said. “[We were] extended an invitation after playing in a nines comp down the Gold Coast at the start of the year.” Fischer said some of the side’s Fijian players had the opportunity to show the

THUNDER ROARS INTO FERNVALE

FROM PAGE 40 “It was really fantastic to see our little young cricketers out there,” Lehmann said. “It’s through those kids that a club grows.” Lehmann then bowled the first ball for the senior Thunder and Wanderers QLD Club game. “It’s great to see the fields being used and they look a picture, and I think everyone’s enjoyed what they’ve seen so far,” he said. Lehmann hoped a name change may occur, which

Mayor Graeme Lehmann bowled the first ball game.

Morgan and Schroder said was a possibility. “The committee have discussed the name as it is,

there’s a lot of history to go with that because we are a merged side of Marburg and Mt Crosby, but it’s definitely something we’re going to discuss in the future,” Morgan said. “Our long term goals is to have an actual local Fernvale side play here, that’s the plan.” Lehmann said the more the fields could be used, the better. “The amount of dollars council put into having a complex like this, the more it can be used the better because it helps to sell the value of it.”

team their village and said a highlight of the trip was providing kids in need with donated clothing. “A highlight was providing the kids with apparel at the competition and at the village,” he said. “A dinner was also provided for all the teams and a fire dancing display.”

Betty’s still bowling LAIDLEY Bowls Club member Betty Yates celebrated her 96th birthday with fellow bowlers for their Wednesday socials on December 6. Yates thanked everyone for organising the celebration ahead of her birthday on December 7. “It’s really fantastic, it’s really great,” she said. “I love this club and they’re so good and kind to me, I always feel honoured how they look after me.” Yates has bowled for around 20 years in the Lockyer Valley, and called Laidley Bowls Club home

for the last decade. “I always loved coming to bowls, and I look forward to it, I really do,” she said. “At my age now, it’s good exercise and it’s good to meet all your friends.” To mark the occasion, Bowls Queensland vice president Kerry Green made a special visit to Laidley to deliver Yates her second Matriarch Badge. “You get one when you become 90, but I already got one when I became 90,” Yates said. WELCOME THUNDER BY JACOB HAYDEN

FERNVALE welcomed Marburg-Mt Crosby Thunder Cricket Club on Tuesday night, December 5 to celebrate the club’s future in the region. Club vice president Luke Morgan explained the Marburg and Mt Crosby clubs merged in 2013 with junior members utilising the Fernvale Sports Park since the merge. “We’re trying to really promote the game in the Fernvale region, which is lacking out this way because there aren’t any clubs around,” Morgan said. Seniors began calling Fernvale home this year thanks to the new pitch. “The pitch wasn’t quite ready for senior cricket to start with,” Morgan said.

“To have facilities that are usable by everyone is the most important thing, and this is a really beautiful field, it’s going to be really enjoyable to play cricket in.” Club president Troy Schroder said a big drawcard was the lighting, which enabled teams to play night cricket. “Everyone, all the clubs are keen to get in and play some night cricket this year, especially in the middle of summer when it’s 44℃ out there, you’d rather start later in the day,” Schroder said. Junior teams kicked off Tuesday’s entertainment with a friendly game, under the watchful eye of Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann. CONTINUES 39
