neighbours and the Rural Fire Service to participate LQ ÀUH PDQDJHPHQW RI the entire mountain. I am D TXDOLÀHG HFRORJLVW :H have long kept note of Rock Wallaby sightings on the mountain.

We are bemused that after the announcement of the Mt Glen Rock Adventure Park Master Plan by Somerset Regional Council, there has been a sudden interest in the welfare of local wildlife. Online petitions and emotive ÁLHUV FODLPLQJ LPSDFWV RQ Koalas and Rock Wallabies have been circulated. It seems to us the idea of conservation is being used to stop the proposal without the passion, care, knowledge or responsibility that actual conservation actions require.

Let me share some real information with \RX 6LJQLÀFDQW ZKROH RI HFRV\VWHP EXVKÀUHV KDYH occurred on Mt Glen Rock properties in 2004, 2014 and 2019. Mt Glen Rock Regional Ecosystems (RE) include: RE 12.12.9 with a recommended burn interval of 4-25 years with a 40-60% mosaic burn; and RE 12.12.10 with a recommended burn interval of 30-50 years. viewable at the Qld Department of Environment and Science website.

Burning the entire mountain too often has been detrimental to these ecosystems. Combined with the worst drought VLQFH WKH (VN SRVW RIÀFH started keeping records, WKH ÀUH GHYDVWDWHG the ecosystems, likely permanently – it was a local extinction event. Brush Tailed rock wallabies disappeared from the mountain in 2019. There was no shelter and no food for them. Koalas have been scarce since. So clearly the lock it up and do nothing strategy has failed!

The cause of ignition for WKH DQG ÀUHV LV likely to have been arson, DV ERWK ÀUHV VWDUWHG LPmediately adjacent to the Brisbane Valley Highway on a Reserve land parcel.

Due to inaccessibility to WKH PRXQWDLQ RQFH D ÀUH VWDUWV WKH FXUUHQW ÀUH PDQagement plan is focussed on protection of people’s houses and pasture only. A VHULHV RI OLQNHG SULYDWH ÀUH control tracks and public roads circle and contain ÀUHV WR 0W *OHQ 5RFN 7KLV strategy does not allow managed mosaic burn patterns; there is no way WR SURWHFW ÁRUD DQG IDXQD

It is essentially burn all, or nothing.

If the proposed trails (from Mt Glen Rock Master Plan) existed in 2019 the trails and access tracks could have been used as ÀUH FRQWURO OLQHV UHVXOWLQJ in a possible 75% reduction of burnt area comSDUHG WR 6LJQLÀFDQW Rock Wallaby habitat could have been saved.

The proposed trails will provide better access for RFS vehicles and local landowners to Mt Glen Rock. The proposed trails will provide adequate ÀUH FRQWURO OLQHV LQ PDQ\ situations, allowing better ZLOGÀUH FRQWURO DQG LPSOHmentation of controlled, prescribed mosaic burning practices.

The total land area for the proposed adventure park is 208.1 ha. The total area of 28km of trails, working on maximum 2m disturbance width, is less than 6.0 ha. That is less than 2.9% of the total park area that will be disturbed to create trails that could save 75% or more of the park burning. It is a trade off, but surely it is better to demand Council incorpoUDWHV WKH ÀUH PDQDJHPHQW plan into their Master Plan?

Poor timing for land valuations?

BY JACOB HAYDEN LAND valuations for properties in Lockyer Valley, Somerset and Ipswich were released on March 31.

Many residents may question the valuations in light of WKH ÀRRGV Councils have encouraged residents to object to their

valuations if needed to avoid unjust impacts.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Portfolio Councillor for Finance Chris Wilson said council will analyse the data to appropriately understand changes to individual properties.

“As a Council, we are committed to minimising

rate shock wherever possible – the importance of which is further emphasised folORZLQJ WKH UHFHQW ÀRRGLQJ event,” Cr Wilson said.

Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said soaring land values were a ‘silver lining’ following the economic impacts of WKH SDQGHPLF DQG ÀRRGV

“We are also working hard on managing our costs so that record land valuation increases do not mean record rises in overall rates in June’s budget,” Cr Lehmann said.

Ipswich City Council Mayor Teresa Harding said a ‘common sense approach’ ZDV QHHGHG IRU ÀRRG D൵HFW-

ed properties.

“Clearly, land values taken from late last year are QR ORQJHU UHOHYDQW WR ÀRRG impacted properties and I’m sure these property owners would agree,” she said.

LAND valuations released by the Valuer-General on March 31 present moderate increases in property value across the region.

7KH YDOXDWLRQV UHÁHFW ODQG values on October 1 2021, with an increase in 20.3% overall for Lockyer Valley, 21.4% for Somerset, and 23.1% for Ipswich.

Ipswich and Lockyer Valley land values had not been updated since 2019.

Somerset properties in Glamorgan Vale, Jimna, Linville and Moore rose more than 40% in value.

Lockyer Valley properties in Flagstone Creek, Grantham, Postmans Ridge and Withcott also rose over 40%.

Laidley is the only locality to drop in value, decreasing by 1.1% with an average of $89,000.

Responsibility for land value lies with land owners, not council TO AVOID being ‘tarnished by the same brush’, landowners are reminded they have time to object to recent land valuations.

AgForce, representing Queensland’s rural producers, is warning landowners

if they do not object tthey may be lumped with higher rates and rent.

AgForce CEO Michael Guerin said objections must be lodged with the Valuer-General by May 31.

“Unimproved values de-

termine what council rates rural landholders pay...so LW·V LPSRUWDQW WKH ÀJXUHV are right,” Mr Guerin said.

AgForce’s valuer John Moore said responsibility lay with landowners.

“It’s important you object

to your new valuation if you believe the unimproved value is too high,” he said.

Ray Bachmann Real Estate principal Ramon Bachmann said land valuations should be individualised by block to avoid errors.

“It doesn’t work when RQH SDUW RI WRZQ ÁRRGV and the other doesn’t,” Mr Bachmann said.

Gatton Real Estate agent Allison Vinckier said it may take some time for objections to be processed.

“There may be quite a lot of objections this time because we received the letWHUV MXVW DIWHU WKH ÁRRGV« they’ll all be querying their rateable valuations,” Mrs Vinckier said.

BY JACOB HAYDEN LOWOOD Fire and Rescue Station’s Lieutenant Kelvin Delaney was awarded The National Medal on Thursday April 7 for his 15 years of service to the community and the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

QFES Assistant Commissioner for South Eastern Region Kevin Walsh congratulated Mr Delaney for his achievement in a speech.

“It’s really a celebration of a family commitment,” Mr Walsh said.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan MP said the award recognised good conduct, integrity and faithful service.

“We’re not just recognising 15 years for you and your family, we’re actually recognising your good character,” Mr Ryan said.

Mr Delaney said he felt proud of the achievement and was grateful to have his

New tanker for Lowood Fire and Rescue

No closure after aged care complaint

David Wotton lodged a complaint in February 2021 with the Aged Care Commission against Karinya Place, a Carinity aged care facility in Laidley.

Volunteers bring native life to Valley Rail Trail

LOWOOD conservation volunteers were busy over the last six months, revegetating and maintaining three kilometres of land alongside the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

The project, run by Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA), organised two teams of volunteers to assist Pete’s Hobby Nursery in planting, pruning, brush cutting, whipper-snipping and spraying native Australian plants.

Pete’s Hobby Nursery owner Peter Bevan said the nursery’s regular volunteer QXPEHUV KDG GURSSHG R൵ during COVID, making CVA’s assistance valuable.

“We had a lot of maintenance to catch up on and they’ve helped us out a lot,” Mr Bevan said.

“This project is providing employment opportunities, environmental recovery and resilience outcomes, with broad community participation,” he said.

INSPIRED by Ronald Reagan’s words, ‘we can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone,’ the Esk Community Choir will hold a fundraising concert for Ukraine on July 10.

Choir committee member Susan Walker said the concert was an act of kindness for Ukraine from the choir, doing what they can from where they are.

“One of the great joys of living in a country such as ours is the ability to feel safe in our homes,” she said.

“The citizens of Ukraine used to feel this too.

“Right now, their homes have been levelled, families separated and worse, their towns and cities destroyed by shelling and more than four million have been displaced.”

All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

The ‘Voices for Ukraine’ concert will be held at the Somerset Civic Centre at 2.30pm.

“Each tiny act of giving is about making a difference,”Ms Walker said.

Gatton Show Society president KathHrine Raymont said entrants should plan their horticulture and produce entries now.

“It’s worthwhile thinking about what you might like to get ready for the show,” she said.

With the show set for July 15 and 16, Ms Raymont said some entrants would need to plant now

to be ready for harvest.

“Get ready for the 2022 Gatton Show and have them ready for picking.”

Ms Raymont said the show society had their ¶ÀQJHUV FURVVHG· IRU D ELJ show.

The schedule will be available on the Gatton Show Society website in the coming weeks.

Citizen historians piecing together Gatton’s past GATTON AND District Historical Village took part in the Lockyer Valley Heritage Festival this year with engine shed demonstrations and displays by the 2nd Light Horse Lockyer Troop and East Coast Paranormal.

Lockyer Antique Motor Association members brought vintage cars to the village.

Guests were also able help piece together Gatton’s history by examining old photos.

Gatton resident of 64 years Jan Hoger said it was important that people were remembered.

“I spent the last 12 months researching, visiting people and putting names to faces,” Ms Hoger said.

“People had such interesting lives, places and homes they lived in.

“They are pioneers and they did so much for the area.”

Farm life is long days and hard work FARMING is the hardest work anyone will do.

Gwen Diete knows this better than anyone, having spent her life working the land.

“Right from the age of eight I can remember shifting heavy irrigation pipes, minding cows, picking potatoes, you name it,” Gwen said.

She was born in 1935, the second eldest in her family with an older brother and three younger brothers.

“I thought being the only girl you should stay in the house and work but I had to work on the farm all the time.”

She grew up on her father’s farm at Blenheim and went to school at Mt Berryman.

“When I was 13, my father got me out of school because my youngest brother was coming along,” Gwen said.

“My mother always worked on the farm, and when she came home I had to look after the baby while she went back to work on the farm.”

At 19, she married Neil Diete from Ingoldsby and they had six children.

During their working life they farmed at Mt Berryman, Tenthill, and Victoria Point.

“I was on the farm every day of my life right until the day the babies were due to

“Because they were all born overtime I was still on the farm working.”

“That’s how my kids were reared,” Gwen said.

“Because he was in the army he believed he had to have a shave every morning,” she said.

“Many a time I was out on the farm and had nearly 100 bunches of beetroot pulled by the time he came out.”

The daily routine at the Mt Berryman farm was hard work from before dawn until

after dusk.

“I’d get out at 3am every morning and light up the old copper and wash,” Gwen said.

“Napkins and school clothes one morning, napkins and towels the next morning, napkins and farm clothes the next morning. ³$IWHU ¿YH R¶FORFN RI DQ evening my husband had to go up the mountain to get the cows down.”

On winter nights they milked by lantern light while the children slept in the yard.

“Neil and I carried the sleeping kids and put them to bed, then we came back and carried the milk over to the dairy.”

While Neil separated the milk and fed the pigs, Gwen cooked a hot tea every night.

“As soon as tea was over he went to bed,” Gwen said.

“But I had to wash up, clean up, then I’d get our lunches and everything ready for the next day.

“I used to go to bed at 10 o’clock every night and get up at three in the morning.

“It was tough, and it was hard.

“That was our life at Mt Berryman. ³1RZ WKDW ,¶YH EHHQ R൵ the farm I wouldn’t go back because it’s the hardest work anybody’s ever got to do in their life, if a woman’s got to work on the farm all the time like I did.”

Solo exhibition at Glen Rock PRIZE-WINNING artist Jenny &RQQRU RSHQV KHU ÀUVW VROR exhibition at Glen Rock Gallery this month.

Jenny Connor has been painting for 20 years.

She decided to learn how to paint in order to illustrate the stories she had written for her grandchildren.

Painting soon became a joy as her skill progressed.

6KH ZRQ D ÀUVW DQG second prize at a local art exhibition, then her painting of ‘The Queenslander’ was accepted to be shown in The Waltzing Matilda Art Gallery in Winton.

Over the past few years Jenny has concentrated on the illustrations of her ÀUVW VWRU\ ERRN IRU FKLOGUHQ called ‘Jet Has a Wonderful

Plan’.

This will be on sale in Glen Rock Gallery during the exhibition.

Jenny feels that all of her paintings need to tell a story.

Jan loved painting and drawing in her youth but then had a break for about thirty years, until she met (the late) Max Watters, a professional artist from Muswellbrook.

Jan works mainly in acrylics.

Jan said she had no preference in subject matter whether it was still life, portraiture or landscape.

Each genre has its own GLIÀFXOWLHV LQ SRUWUD\DO and Jan said persistence in all genres was the key to achieving the result you want.

Persistence must pay off, as Jan has won numerous prizes for her work over the years.

Come celebrate this Easter weekend at your local church TENTHILL Baptist Church and Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Parish open their doors this Easter weekend and invite all to celebrate.

Churches will welcome locals and guests to celebrate services on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday.

Tenthill Baptist Church Senior Pastor Dale Buchanan said Easter is one of the most important dates on the Christian calendar.

“It reminds us of the great

love that God has for His people, that He gave His Son to die on the cross for our sins and we are to have faith in Him and be given eternal life through His resurrection as well,” he said.

Tenthill Baptist Church will hold an 8am Good Friday service, a 6am Easter Sunday service, and the usual 9am Easter Sunday resurrection service.

Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Parish Father Noyicham M Antony said peace

and joy are the highlights of Easter.

“It’s an opportunity for people to gather,” Fr Noy said.

“This is the best week of the year for a Christian… it is a time of celebration.”

Fr Noy hopes that with restrictions lifted more people will be able to attend celebrations at their parishes in Gatton, Laidley, Forest Hill, Glenore Grove, Esk and Lowood.

Despite weakening,

La Niña will continue to contribute to wetter than median conditions for parts of northern and eastern Australia.

April to June rainfall is likely to be above median for Queensland.

There is an increased chance of unusually high rainfall (in the top 20% of historical records) for April to June across the northern half of Australia (up to 4 times the usual chance) and eastern NSW (1.5

times the usual chance).

However, it should be noted that in tropical areas the wet season is drawing to a close, meaning average rainfall at this time of the year is starting to decrease.

Minimum temperatures for April to June are likely to be warmer than median almost Australia wide (chances are greater than 60%), with most areas except the inland south very likely (greater than 80%).

Weaner steers top $2,440 at Silverdale Weaner Sale

A top-quality yarding of 1009 head at the 1st Weaner / Store Sale at Silverdale on Saturday 2nd April 2022 saw the market extremely strong for all types of cattle on the current market.

Buyers travelled from far and wide with the majority of cattle going into Southern and Western areas. Steers topped $2440 with the majority making between $2000 - $2300 and heifers topped $2100 with the majority making between $1650 $1800.

Neuendorf Farming sold the champion pen of the show for a massive $2440.

Holiday safety warning over ATVs THE FEDERAL Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) is reminding families WR VWD\ VDIH ZKHQ ULGLQJ RII road vehicles over the Easter holidays.

All terrain vehicles (ATVs) DQG 6LGH E\ VLGH YHKLFOHV (SSVs) are used as versatile machinery on faUm properties.

These vehicles are incred ibly tempting for friends and family visiting rural proper ties looking for adventure, but they can have fatal results.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said many in cidents are totally avoidable and happen because riders do QRW XVH LQ WKH EXLOW LQ VDIHW\ mechanisms.

“There have been 21 fatalities involving ATVs and SSVs during 2021 up to the end of November and tragi FDOO\ FKLOGUHQ DUH RYHU UHS resented in these numbers every year,” Mr Weber said.

Importantly, FCAI advises

ATV and SSVs may be tempting for a joyride, but users are urged to follow safety guidelines.

Original 1974 GTS Four Door Monaro

BY DAVID GREER LOCKYER VALLEY couple Glen and Carolyn Crimmins are the proud owners of this beautiful all original GTS 4 Door 350 Chev Monaro.

Glen said in his youth he had owned several Holdens starting with a 1972 HQ Kingswood, then a LC Torana, and then his favourite: a HQ Monaro with a 308 engine and 4speed M21 gearbox.

Glen sold this Monaro WR ¿QDQFH D KRXVH LQ WKH Lockyer, but the passion for the Monaro stuck with him.

“When I was on the look out for a Monaro in early 2018, this GTS came up on the radar and it didn’t take much thinking to hook the car trailer up and get on the road to Adelaide where it was living and had lived its entire life,” Glen said.

Glen learned about the Monaro’s history: it was built at the General Motors Holden Elizabeth Plant in 1974 where it was purchased by its ¿UVW RZQHU RQO\ WR EH ERXJKW back a few years later by one of the mechanics that may have helped build it.

This mechanic kept the Monaro for decades until selling to Glen and Carolyn, the third owners, in 2018.

They rebuilt the motor just prior to Glen and Carolyn purchasing the car.

“The previous owner had done a full restoration in 2004,” Glen said.

I give my credit to them as it still looks like a fresh new car overall inside and out.

Glen said he has only put 12,000kms on the clock since owning it.

The Monaro is on club rego and the Crimmins family enjoy going to Schulte’s car meet, Karalee car night and the occasional trip to Joe’s Diner in Brisbane.

Glen belongs to the Gatton and Ipswich Muscle Car clubs and enjoys cruising around the local area.

I could tell by the smile on Glen’s face when he talked about the GTS, he really is proud to be an owner of a piece of GMH history.

Advice on preventing knee injuries and returning to sport CONTRIBUTED

.1((6 $5( one of our largest joints and most troubled by sports injuries.

Its job is to maintain stability, give mobility while very strong and powerful muscles act on it.

When we walk, three to four times our body weight goes through our knee

joint.

When we run or jump the forces are 10 times our body weight!

Inside our knee joint are special structures that help disperse these great forces.

When we have knee pain, our strong muscles especially the inner

quad and glutes start to weaken, and other muscles may get tight.

This combination of tight and weak muscles puts your knee at greater risk of injury when running, in sports and with repeated heavy lifting.

Steps to reduce your knee pain.

1. Stretches: Hamstring, Quadriceps and gluteal stretches are an important part of your training routine. Three times each, 15-30 second holds, twice a day for a week.

2. Strengthening: ([HUFLVHV WDUJHWLQJ WKH inner quads and glutes are bridging, lunges and

squats, but they must be done without pain or that inside quad will not work!

Technique is important.

3. Taping to switch on the inner quads, so it’s there when needed.

4. Gradual return to sport.

If you’re not getting relief, it is time to seek further advice.

On Wednesday 6th April we had our regular Carinity OUR House visitors. Some played with a degree of gusto but all enjoyed their regular Bowling break.

RUGBY LEAGUE GATTON HAWKS Gatton Hawks completed another 4 from 4 against Brothers in Toowoomba.

Fine Faingaa followed up last week’s player of the match with sound performance.

Hawks Hooker George Tevita overcame a rib injury to play and won the player of the match award whilst Captain Haydan Lipp was instrumental in ensuring the Hawks kept their mind on the job.

Brothers toiled well but were up against it especially against the huge men from the valley. Sam Betros tried hard all day. But Brothers can take plenty out of the game.

Lockyer Veteran’s cricket rebound LOCKYER Veterans are in a rebuilding stage coming into their eighth season in the SEQ competition, played from April to August.

Lockyer have entered a team in over 60s and over 50s to play against competing regions Wide Bay, Redlands/Logan, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold coast, Ipswich, and Toowoomba.

Matches are of 90 over duration, and usually played on Saturdays.

The re-building has proceeded well in the summer season.

Over 50s Coordinator Andrew Voigt said that Lockyer has been able to recruit several suitably aged players from the Lockyer Cricket Association competition.

He and team Captain Randall Olm are pleased with the squad that has developed.

Veteran’s cricket is played at a slower pace than club cricket, plus inclusion and enjoyment are paramount requisites.

Darryl Ready is over 60s coordinator.

In reply, Laidley bowled out Centrals for 151.

LAIDLEY Cricketers had a reason to celebrate, with both 1st and QG *UDGH WHDPV ¿QLVKing as minor premier of the Ipswich and West Moreton Cricket Finals last month.

2nd Division Captain Ashley Lawless said the Laidley community fully backed the Blue Dogs.

“There were a couple of periods there where we had a lot of commuQLW\ PHPEHUV ¿OOLQJ LQ making sure we could always put a team on the paddock,” he said.

Quarantine kept some players away from the game, but Mr Lawless said the those who stepped up made sure

WKH\ FRXOG DOZD\V ¿HOG a whole team.

“At no stage have I seen Laidley in any grade name less than 11 players in the seven years that I’ve been there, let alone even consider forfeiting a match due to player numbers,” he said.

“That’s what makes it special for Laidley, they really do embrace their cricket club and that’s shown in the performance of the last couple of years.”

Both divisions have a successful track record. ³7KH ¿UVW JUDGH ZHUH a wonderful side this year and we’ve been able to follow suit,” Mr Lawless said.
