Independent review into Inland Rail

THE Australian Government announced an independent review into the Inland Rail project on October 7, a welcome outcome for Lockyer Valley Regional Council (LVRC) who object to the rail’s alignment through Gatton.

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King MP said the coalition left Inland Rail ‘in a mess’.

“We inherited a project over budget, behind schedule and with no plan for where it will start or end,” she said.

“The review will consider the process for selecting the Inland Rail route, including stakeholder consultation, and assess the project’s scope, schedule and cost.”

Lockyer Valley councillors

Member for Wright Scott Buchholz and State Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald on Thursday to discuss potential

impacts of the rail project.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said council was not opposed to Inland Rail, but its impacts would be ‘extensive’.

“If this project also delivered passenger rail, it would

make sense to come through our towns, but it won’t, and the huge volumes and speed of freight trains should be sent around our towns,” she said.

“It is imperative ARTC [Australian Rail Track Corporation] get this right, and to

date, it has not been forthcoming with its costings or recent studies, despite repeated requests from council to see these crucial documents.”

The review comes on the back of calls from LVRC for ARTC to reconsider the route.

LVRC receives green light for roadworks to begin

LOCKYER Valley Regional Council (LVRC) has received the green light from the Queensland Reconstruction Authority to commence thorough repairs on some of the renetwork.

LVRC will implement a restoration process on those approved areas, rather than re-patching potholes.

LVRC infrastructure

portfolio Councillor Janice Holstein said they were relieved to receive the necessary approvals required to commence higher-quality repairs.

“We understand some residents are frustrated by the pace, level, and resilience of repairs; however, it was vital we receive the necessary approvals prior to commencing works,” Cr Holstein said.

“Unfortunately, funding

approval alone doesn’t solve all the delay issues as council is not immune from the major challenges resulting from the ongoing

cant supply chain issues… happening across Australia.

“We will continue to ensure the worst defects are prioritised, subject to the appropriate materials being available, as the overall safety of our community is paramount.

“We ask for the community’s patience and understanding as we attend to road safety and access issues in order of priority.”

Council has engaged contractors to clean out table drains across the region to reduce the impacts of futher rainfall.

For further information, contact Council on 1300 005 872 or visit lockyervalley.qld.gov.au

ARTC Inland Rail director public private partnership Tony Lubofsky said ARTC had continually consulted with landowners, LVRC, and communities since 2017.

“At the request of the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, ARTC has undertak-

en additional studies to assess the feasibility of the rail line bypassing Gatton,” he said.

design challenges if Gatton is bypassed, including additional impacts on koala habitat and prime agricultural land,

ing new landholders, and extensive additional costs to the project.”

Minister King said the review would give the government a ‘clear-eyed view’ on the problems surrounding Inland Rail.

“Dr Schott is a highly respected and trusted leader who brings a wealth of experience from both the business and government sectors to the role,” she said.

“She will conduct a thorough and independent review of Inland Rail and make recommendations to ensure this is successfully delivered.”

The review is expected to be completed by early 2023.

BRAVE Companion Dog

Rescue (BCDR) is under increasing pressure thanks to high surrender rates, and they need your help.

BCDR coordinator Ludelle Milne said the housing crisis has caused many in the Lockyer Valley to terminate rentals, house-hop or move interstate, forcing more and more people to surrender their dogs.

sation with limited resources, BCDR can only do so much for the dogs already in their care.

“If a dog’s at risk I will try every which way to get it into foster or into BCDR,” Mrs Milne said.

“At the moment I have a rule so that when a dog goes, another one comes in.

“It’s really hard because we can’t help everyone.”

BCDR has a strict no-kill policy, meaning they will not euthanise dogs or redirect surrendered dogs to other services which do.

“There’s no way I’m referring a pet to someone who says they are a rescue group and then they go and put the animal down because it didn’t get out the door quick enough,” Mrs Milne said.

She said the top three things people can do to support BCDR’s cause is to volunteer, donate, and to help rehome dogs.

Mrs Milne was grateful to the local university students

for the time they have spent walking and exercising the dogs.

“The dogs need to stay out in the fresh air and the sunshine for as long as they can,” she said.

For anyone looking to surrender their pets, Mrs Milne advises to consider all options before turning to euthanasia.

“Why does the dog have to pay for what’s going on in your life?” she asked.

“If somebody is homeless and they want to surrender their dog, I say ‘we will foster it until you get on your feet and come and get your dog back’.”

If you would like to volunteer, donate, or adopt a dog visit the BCDR Facebook page or bravedogs.com.au

Human books open up

LAIDLEY Library welcomed locals to a small and intimate session on October 6 with two ‘human books’, Rayonce and Michelle.

‘The Real Housewife of Regency Downs’ Rayonce (AKA Raymond) talked about the life and glamour of working as a drag artist in the Lockyer Valley.

Rayonce dressed up for attendees and gave incred-

ible insight into the world of drag, what it is like being an Indigenous drag artist, and how he came to be involved in the scene.

Michelle followed with a range of stories from her life and how ‘The Voice Within’ helped guide her decision making.

“After the sudden death of my father at 11 I wanted to be with him, life was not

worth living,” Michelle said.

“The voice within told me I would have a wonderful, adventurous and abundant life… the voice within was right.”

A second ‘human book’ session is on October 27 at Gatton Library.

A word from Grace and Jacob

THIS WEEK marks The Independent’s second birthday and it simultaneously feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago we

Personally, it’s been a challenging but rewardmy feet and voice in this career.

When I returned to Gatton, my hometown, in January 2017 I did not expect to be in this position today.

It is an immense privilege and pleasure to be a journalist in the corner of the world I call home.

We are a vast, vibrant, and varied community.

Thank you for inviting me into your homes, schools, clubhouses, and garden sheds to tell your stories.

Celebrating your achievements brings me great joy and satisfaction in my work.

Reporting on our trials, challenges, and injustices is satisfying in its own way.

My dearest hope is that this newspaper connects you to your region and your community in a

meaningful way.

A highlight of the last twelve months was welcoming Jacob to the team, whose contributions, opinions, and input I greatly appreciate.

I look forward to many more years.

I MAY have only been with The Lockyer & Somerset Independent for eight months, but I have seen some incredible things and met some fascinating people.

Throughout my Bachelor of Journalism degree our lecturers stressed the importance of community newspapers and the difference they can make for small, regional towns.

We are not just here to tell stories, we are here to keep you informed on issues important to your community and to connect residents, businesses, and

community groups so they can thrive.

The last two years have been tough for the people of the Lockyer Valley and Somerset regions after waves of COVID-19 lock-

an ongoing economic crisis.

The region has displayed remarkable resilience throughout these setbacks.

I am so grateful to see

newspaper can have on regional towns.

Congratulations to The Independent on its second birthday, thank-you to you for continuing to read our

paper and thank-you to local businesses for advertising with us.

It is wonderful to see the community continue to support a local, independently published, free newspaper.

SOPHIA College Plainland students brought their furry friends to school on October 5 for a special blessing.

As part of the Feast of St Francis, patron saint of ani-

Sophia College principal Narelle Dobson said pets were a fundamental part of many families.

“At Sophia, we are one big family, so the inclusion of our pets is a natural sequence,” she said.

Mrs Dobson said it was a Francis as the founder of the college’s charism.

Fresh take on classic comedy

THIS MONTH, Lockyer Regional Performing Arts Inc. (LRPA) presents one of English literature’s most well-loved plays, The Importance of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy pokes fun at social customs of late Victorian England and is brought to life by a talented cast of local actors.

First-time LRPA director Rowan Nash said they were excited to take on the director’s role in one of their favourite plays.

“Earnest is actually one of my favourite shows and it’s one of Oscar Wilde’s most popular plays,” they said.

“Oscar Wilde’s writing is quite marvellous.

“He very much knows how to write wit.”

Msr Nash said there are common themes a modern audience can relate to in the play.

“It’s about Jack, who wants to get away from his normal

life and live a life he doesn’t feel he can,” they said.

“Which I feel a lot of people can relate to, being in a life that they don’t want to live.”

Actor Braxton Golder recently had a lead role in

Laidley State High School’s Clue and, after several shows with LRPA, takes on the role

“I can’t remember how many shows I’ve done, but enough experience to inter-

pret this play well,” Braxton said.

One of the most interesting parts he has found during the rehearsal process is learning and exploring the language of the text.

“It’s really well written,

that’s what makes it fun,” Braxton said.

Playing opposite Braxton as Jack Worthing is Royce Goutam, who made his stage debut in Lockyer District High School’s Grease this year.

Royce said audiences will enjoy Wilde’s humour.

“It’s got a lot of funny elements in there as well which I like because the audience will laugh,” he said.

Msr Nash said the young actors in the cast bring a fresh perspective to the play.

“It’s very much a contemporary look at things, being directed by a young queer director and from the perspective of young actors,” they said.

“I’m so lucky to be blessed

“They really take their characters, their lines, and make them their own.

“They bring their own experiences to their choices and delivery.”

It’s a new interpretation while still maintaining the foundation of the classic.

“What you expect from this show, expect a bit more.”

The Importance of Being Earnest is on at the Laidley Cultural Centre on October 21, 22, 28, and 29. Tickets are on sale now at lrpa.org.au

Lots of love for red meat industry

PERCEPTIONS and trust of the red meat industry are strong among metropolitan Australians, as is the desire to learn about how the beef and lamb industries operate, according to Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) latest consumer sentiment research.

MLA managing director Jason Strong said this year’s

an increasing desire to understand how the industry works from metro Australia.

“Consumers, especially

within our cities, are wanting to learn more about how beef and lamb is produced, in particular how farmers are looking after the environment and their animals,” he said.

cant opportunity for the sector as our research indicates that higher levels of industry knowledge are linked to better perceptions.

“A greater understanding of our industry also has benincreased demand.

“Consumers with higher levels of industry knowledge are more likely to have increased their red meat consumption overall.

“This is because they un-

undertaken by Australian cattle and sheep producers in raising their livestock and looking after the environment.”

Of those surveyed, consumers are most interested in learning about how producers ensure the humane treatment

of their livestock (46%), and how they look after the environment (44%).

The top three drivers of trust in the industry were the perceptions that producers:

1. Are ethical and trustworthy with animals humanely raised

2. Listen, respect and respond to community concerns

3. Are taking actions to reduce environmental impact improving sustainability.

“Those consumers who

had a high level of trust, were more likely to consume red meat more frequently than those with lower levels of trust.,” Mr Strong said.

Over the last 12 months, red meat consumption patterns have remained stable, with 71% of metro Australians eating the same amount or having increased their consumption of red meat.

The main reasons cited for maintaining or increasing red meat consumption come down to nutrition, taste, and

ease of cooking.

Meanwhile, cost was named as the main reason as to why 29% of consumers reduced red meat consumption in the past year.

“Explaining our productions systems and demonstrating that our producers are ethical and responsible custodians of livestock, land and natural resources helps to inform the community and strengthen an already proud Australian industry.”

Moreton Beef Show and Sale supports Royal Flying Doctors

BOYD O’Brien Bartholomew’s 29th Annual Moreton Beef Show and Sale is on this Thursday October 13 down at the Moreton Saleyards.

Cattle auctioneer Vince O’Brien said attendees can expect approximately 600 cattle at the sale.

He said 20% commission for the sale goes to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“It has amounted to many tens of thousands of dollars over the years,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We believe there’s lots of people in the bush that could quite often need the Flying Doctors.”

As a country business serving country clientele, Mr O’Brien said the sale and fundraising resonates well with customers.

Mr O’Brien thanked sponsors for their ongoing support, including The Lockyer & Somerset Independent, Westpac Bank, Queensland

Country Life, carriers and local businesses.

“We’re very grateful for the sponsorship of this event,” he said.

The sale will feature 32 classes and six champions for grain, grass, and crop fed cattle.

“We’ve got meatworks

categories [and] we’ve got store categories,” Mr O’Brien said.

“We chose this time of the year because… it’s a good time to market cattle, normally the prices are quite good for the seasonal conditions.”

As one of the founding members, Mr O’Brien said he was excited to see the sale draw close to 30 years.

AgTech insights prepare students

LABOUR attraction and retention continues to be a major challenge for horticulture and agriculture industries, so to plant seeds of inspiration Growcom developed and hosted a workshop in AgTech careers.

Thirteen students from the Lockyer Valley and Darling Downs schools spent three days (September 28-30) learning all about agricultural technology.

Growcom, Queensland’s peak industry body for horticulture, created the AgTech Elite School Holiday Program which was led by their Queensland Agriculture

Kym Wessling and facilitated by UQ Skills.

“One of the important aspects for Growcom as a voice for the horticulture industry in Queensland is to make sure we are educating the next generation in agriculture and inspiring them, so that in-demand ag-tech roles are

Wessling said.

“The program aimed to do that and to give those already interested a better insight so that we can focus on what is a major challenge in the industry – attraction and retention of labour.

“It was funded by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries as part of the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network initia-

Grade 10-12 students from schools in the Agribusiness Gateway to Industry Schools Project came to Gatton to discuss past and present ag technology and were given an overview by current UQ students on farm machinery.

They attended sessions with Fraser Border of inte-

plored electronics, designed an irrigation system, looked at drones and machine vision

for real world applications on farms, looked at employing AI for intelligent AgTech robotics, including how to use algorithms and the cutting edge of innovation in the red meat industry.

VALLEY Steel & Fencing (VSF) has taken on the role as the Lockyer Valley’s very own distributor of BOC gas, keeping supply local to Gatton.

VSF administration manager Kylie Randall said the addition of BOC gas meant customers had

more variety.

They will not only provide industrial gases but also medical oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and helium.

Mrs Randall said keeping BOC gas in the Lockyer Valley meant customers could continue to shop local.

“While they’re coming

in for gas they’re also helping us out and keeping business in town because they’re not having to go to Toowoomba,” she said.

“BOC wanted to keep it local so it didn’t go to Toowoomba or Ipswich and there was no-one in the local district to service it,

so we took that on.

“We have a fully equipped vehicle, with tail gate loader for gas deliveries.

“We are also in discussions with ELGAS, to take on agency for LPG supplies.”

VSF sells rural, domestic,

and pool fences along with fencing products like posts, steel pickets, and plain, barbed and chained wire.

corrugated and trim-deck

“We also sell concreting products like mesh and

slabs,” Mrs Randall said.

“We sell a lot of downgrade products as well products… at the moment we’ve got a fair bit of downgrade fencing products.”

VSF is located at 44 Tenthill Creek Road, Gatton.

This 1980 Ford XD actually is My Ride

BY POPULAR demand from friends and car club

people who have asked why I have not yet written about my passion for cars and my own car, here is David Greer’s My Ride.

I have always been into classic cars and –although I am a Ford man – I appreciate all makes and models and the work that goes into bringing them back to former glory by the owners.

I personally know how much time

people put into their pride and joys.

When job to write My Ride for The Independent jumped at the chance as my life has revolved around cars, car meets and getting my own cars to go as fast as they can and look as

So, I thought it was an amazing opportunity to catch up and hear others’ stories and their journeys to driving their favourite vehicles.

From a young age I was always on a mission to go fast, whether in a car or on a motorbike.

The thrill of speed was my passion, and still is today. I know this was always a

worry to my parents but I’ve survived.

Maybe it stemmed from my grandfather who did

up old Fords when I was a young fella.

XR to XY Falcons and Fairmonts seemed to be his

usual preference parked in his back shed.

XDs & XEs were always my favorites – Dick Johnson

in the Tru Blu and Greens’

Tuf was always a television highlight for me, Bathurst being the most important

date of the year.

I have had my XD since 2017 and many man hours have gone in to shaping it how I like it.

The XD is powered by an old-school 351 Cleveland 2V steel heads with a few modern bolt-ons, one being a little TorqStorm side mount supercharger.

It has a C10 stage 2 kitted

disk brakes front and back, MSD ignition system and an 850 CFM boost referenced blow through carburettor.

I have owned a few 351 Cleveland powered cars in my time but this one is the most fun yet.

I cannot tell you how many horsepower as a couple of mechanic friends and I set it up and have not really had the need to dyno it yet as it is already running like a dream.

I have full rego on the XD as I like to be able to jump in and drive when and wherever I want, and I love to get out to all car meets locally in the Lockyer Valley, Brisbane, and Toowoomba.

Occasionally I will trip to Willowbank to give it a blast down the strip.

you with this thought, and it is my opinion only: you can’t beat the sound of a 351 Cleveland humming along at full noise.

Ford blokes will understand!

That’s where the Gatton Spare Parts Auto Pro team comes in handy!

Their wide range of parts, accessories, oils and services are available at a great price too – so you can get your pride and joy all fixed up without breaking the bank.

LJ Hooker Principal, Helen Lodge, surpasses expectations with impressive sale

Helen Lodge, Principal of LJ Hooker Esk, has built a longstanding reputation as a trusted advisor and skilled negotiator. When the owners of 352 Regents Rd, Redbank Creek appointed Helen to sell their property, they felt she was an obvious choice. The property was sold within days of being presented to market, for a record price, bearing testament to her tenacity, work ethic and experience.

The property was a magnificent offering, featuring stunning views across the valley to the greater region of mountains, Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams. A picturesque hideaway, the property offered 35 acres of rural vacant land, a large shed, new quality fencing divided into four paddocks, four dams, rainwater storage, vast

green lawns and established gardens.

“For buyers seeking a quaint, picture perfect hideaway, this property ticked all of the boxes”, Helen said. “With its vast untapped potential, it truly is a blank canvas, the perfect choice for families wishing to design their forever home or luxury escape” she said. Helen described the property as particularly unique and desirable, because it is surrounded by rural grazing land and state forest. According to her, the possibilities are endless, as it could also represent the perfect business opportunity for cabins, subject to council approval.

Ideally located at the end of a no through road, with the only access through a collective locked gate, the property offered absolute

privacy. “You can lie under the stars, admire the spectacular view, and enjoy the peace and quiet with abundant wildlife around you.” she said. Helen’s clients felt she did a tremendous job of showcasing the lifestyle benefits on offer. As a local resident, Helen intrinsically understands her marketplace, and her passion for the region shines through in every interaction. Her clients say it is little wonder buyers who engage with her fall in love with the lifestyle properties she showcases.

If you’re interested in understanding the value of your property in the current market, contact Helen Lodge at LJ Hooker Esk for an obligation-free market update.
