Proof of COVID-19 vaccination became a requirement to access certain venues on December 17, but showing proof of vaccination status has been difficult for some.

Lockyer Community Centre manager Linda Roberts said the centre was ‘bombarded’ by people seeking help to link their vaccination certificates in December.

It has been an unsettling start to the new year.

Ending 2021 with 46 COVID-19 cases in the Lockyer Valley caused me some disquiet, considering the valley had tracked very low numbers since the pandemic began.

This coincided with Queensland Health ceasing to list exposure sites on their website which concerned me. You can read their response in our COVID coverage on pages 3 and 4.

Over the last week I’ve watched as the number grew Report from Laidley Police over Christmas From Dec 1 until Jan 10 Laidley Police issued 126 Traffic Infringement Notices and also 5 Drink Drivers were located. The majority of issued infringements were for speeding.

The highest drink drive reading being 0.098% from a 38 year old Inala man who was intercepted on Hunt Street Forest Hill on Dec 10.

No fatal traffic incidents occurred in the Laidley Police Division so this a major positive and overall demonstrates the good driving behaviour of road users.

However there were a total of 17 reported Traffic

day by day.

As I’m writing this, there are 240 active cases in the Lockyer Valley and 160 in Somerset.

There are currently 22 Queenslanders in the Intensive Care Unit.

These figures are likely higher by the time you are reading this.

I have heard firsthand accounts from an ICU nurse working with ventilated, COVID positive patients.

It is not pleasant and it is not somewhere you want to end up.

Crashes in the Laidley Police Division with 9 being injury traffic crashes, 2 non injury and 6 Hit and Run traffic crashes.

Laidley Police will continue to target the Fatal Five in 2022 and look to increase enforcement of areas where serious traffic crashes occur with a particular focus on the Warrego Highway through the Laidley Police Division and major intersecting roads including Forest Hill-Fernvale Road, Glenore Grove and Niemeyer’s Road Hattonvale.

He was charged at the Ipswich Watchhouse in relation to the Burglary of the Toogoolawah BP where tobacco products where stolen.

He was also charged with the theft of a motor vehicle from Toogoolawah and unlawful possession of explosives.

He was later charged with two counts of stealing petrol from Crows Nest and Esk. The man was remanded in custody to appear at Ipswich Magistrates Court on the 25th January 2022.

Get your ‘green tick’ Check In sorted

Ma Ma Creek Milk Bar owner Deb Wallis reached out to Ms Roberts before Christmas when she saw a need for tech support in the community.

“We’ve noticed a really high number of people out here who can’t link their apps,” Ms Wallis said.

“So they can’t link the MyGov, Medicare and Check In app to achieve a green tick.”

Some hospitality venues have reverted to take away only – which does not require patrons to be vaccinated – but to dine in at pubs and restaurants, attend certain venues, proof of vaccination must be shown as directed by Queensland Health.

Ms Wallis she hopes the services will open up access for people who are vaccinated.

“It just might help people access venues,” she said.

Ms Wallis invites anyone in the community, not only the Ma Ma Creek area, to phone the Milk Bar to book a spot with the ‘tech wiz’.

“I’m happy to shout anybody who comes in a cuppa and they can sit down with the tech,” Ms Wallis said.

“As long as they have their mobile phone, they know their MyGov or Medicare numbers and they’ve got their vaccination sorted, then he can help link it all for them.”

There are several reasons people could find the process difficult, Ms Roberts said, including literacy, poor internet coverage, and tech barriers.

“There’s been an assumption that everybody is so tech-savvy that they’ve already got a MyGov account, they’ve already got Medicare linked into that,” Ms Roberts said.

“It’s been a very unfair expectation of people.”

The community centre’s tech project is funded by the Lockyer Valley Regional Council community fund.

Tech support will be at Ma Ma Creek Milk Bar on Thursday to help double vaccinated people link their vaccination certificate to the Qld Check In app.

COVID-19 outbreak at Laidley aged care Lutheran Services confirmed a COVID-19 outbreak in Tabeel Lutheran Home in Laidley.

On January 5, Lutheran Services CEO Nick Ryan said all positive staff and residents were currently doing well.

“We can confirm that since 27 December we

have had 18 COVID-19 positive residents and 28 COVID-19 positive staff,” he said.

“Staff and residents are in good spirits and whilst our residents are in isolation in their rooms, there is still some hallway Bingo and in-room sing-alongs taking place.”

Mr Ryan said they are working closely with Queensland Health and West Moreton Public Health to contain and manage the situation.

He also thanked local businesses who donated games, books, puzzles and magazines.

“Our lifestyle team and

chaplain are on site to support the health and wellbeing of our residents,” Mr Ryan said.

Residents, families and staff are all receiving daily updates.

“We thank everyone wholeheartedly for their well wishes and cooperation at this time,” he said.

Numerous staff and residents tested positive at Tabeel.

Politicians respond to the boosters and test concerns

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said the booster roll out was ‘bungled’ by Scott Morrison.

“It is inexplicable and inexcusable that in the third year of this pandemic, we still have a vaccine rollout that is plagued by supply issues,” he said.

“To make matters worse far too many are being turned away from COVID-19 testing sites and told to get a rapid antigen test.

“Once again, Scott Morrison was too slow to act in securing rapid antigen tests or enough vaccines for the booster program.”

In response, Local LNP Senator Paul Scarr said this is not the time for political point-scoring.

“It is important through the pandemic that people get the right information,” he said.

“The Federal government is providing 6.6 million Australians on low incomes with 10 tests each over the next three months, meaning 66 million will be delivered, in conjunction with the States, through pharmacies.”

Senator Scarr said the citizens of Ipswich, Somerset Region and Karana Downs would be better served if Mr Neumann ceased political point-scoring and advocated for more beds in our public health system, which is the responsibility of the Labor State government.

State members’ response to COVID Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said the decision to stop publishing COVID contact sites shows that Queensland Health are applying a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

“It is clear that the volume of sites in Brisbane is overwhelming, but our local community still have low numbers that I believe could be published,” he said.

“However, because these sites are now not being published, we all need to be extra vigilant with good hygiene, social distancing and staying at home if you are sick.

“This will help slow the spread.”

A Queensland Health spokesperson said all Queenslanders should assume they are at risk of developing COVID-19 and should continue to check in using the Qld Check In app.

“The app helps us to easily identify and notify anyone who may have attended a super-spreader event or major outbreak venue,” they said.

During the COVID crisis, Member for Nanango Frecklington said her office was busy with enquiries.

“My office has been inundated with calls for help from people caught interstate, business owners affected by ever-changing rules and community groups seeking advice on events,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“Locally, I have been pleased to support the Nanango Electorate through the continuing COVID-19 restrictions.

“We can only hope that 2022 brings more certainty.”

Mr McDonald extended his thanks to health system workers for the job they are doing keeping people alive and safe.

Deb’s goals for Nanango in 2022 Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington has outlined her key goals for 2022 which focus on health, regional roads, and water security.

Mrs Frecklington said the LNP Opposition team has been working hard in 2021 to hold the thirdterm Labor Government to account.

“There is no doubt this is a government that only cares about how things look, not how things actually are,” she said.

“In my Shadow Minister role, I have been calling out Labor’s neglect of regional areas, in particular their ability to plan for the delivery of water infrastructure for Queenslanders.”

Mrs Frecklington said she has met with people across Queensland who share her passion for water security, regional development and local manufacturing.

Her 2022 goal for water security includes working with local irrigator groups and Councils to secure water supply for key projects like the Somerset and Lockyer Water Collaborative, Blackbutt irrigators and the Barlil Weir.

She identified Tanduringie Creek Bridge, the Brisbane Valley Highway, and D’Aguilar Highway as key road upgrade projects needed for Nanango.

Lockyer Valley COVID positive residents have taken to Facebook to share their Check Ins.

Contact tracing up in the air

Citizens have taken it upon themselves to list potential exposure sites as positive COVID cases continue to rise.

Queensland Health stopped listing exposure sites on their website from December 31.

A Queensland Health spokesperson said the department is no longer listing the sites because COVID-19 is now ‘widespread throughout metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland.’

“Given the rapid increase of case numbers in all parts

of the state, we are asking Queenslanders to assume they are at risk of developing COVID-19 no matter where they are and take precautions such as wearing a mask in public and maintaining physical distance from other people,” they said.

Sarah Mead of Coominya, who tested positive on a rapid antigen test (RAT) last week, said the health department should have continued posting locations.

“I feel like they should still be doing contact tracing or have a QR code or something that if you do a test and

comes up positive you can upload your information,” she said.

“It shouldn’t be on the community to go and do it.”

Mrs Mead said the decision to not list venues showed the major cities were ‘getting all the attention.’

“We’re on the main route to Toowoomba and a lot of places, and we just kind of seem to get put on the back burner.”

The Queensland Health spokesperson said only venues of concern such as major outbreak venues or super-spread events may be

listed if needed.

“Super-spreader events are gatherings of people where an infection has spurred a large outbreak of COVID-19,” they said.

Mrs Mead posted her Check In locations to the Lockyer Valley COVID-19 Exposure Sites Facebook page on January 5.

Living and working on a farm, Mrs Mead said she rarely goes out but visited stores as friends were visiting for New Year’s Eve. “I was only in each shop fifteen, twenty minutes max because I did click and

collects and knew what I was going in for,” she said.

Mrs Mead, who is fully vaccinated and wears a mask, said her experience was an ‘eye-opener.’

“We’re not as safe as we think we are in these areas,” she said.

“It’s real, it’s happening, we just have to be aware that it can hit any of us at any time.”

Mrs Mead said she was surprised to see how quickly case numbers grew daily and said local governments should be alerting residents to the number of positive cases.

“I was unaware of how many cases we actually had and I feel like our local governments should actually be stepping up and letting the locals know,” she said.

Queensland Health said it is up to local public health officials to determine if a business or event may be added to the list of contact tracing locations if it has been considered a major outbreak venue or part of a super-spreader event.

“The general population needs to be made aware because attendees cannot be contacted directly,” they said.

Grantham Christmas burglary bungled An attempted burglary on Christmas morning was thwarted by security cameras.

Gatton station officer in charge Senior Sergeant Rowland Browne said a property owner from Grantham was notified of activity at their house by remote control cameras.

The owners were away at the time and called the police.

“Police detained two men at the house and inquiries found they had entered a dwelling and yard, taken a

motorbike frame and were in the process of moving a caravan and had taken other property,” Snr Sgt Browne said.

“Both men were arrested and kept in custody.”

The men, aged 31 and 32, appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on December 28 and are due to appear again on January 27.

They were charged with burglary, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and stealing.

Gatton Police call on public to identify vehicles involved in hit and run accident Gatton Police are calling on the public to help identify vehicles involved in a hit and run accident.

A Kenworth prime mover and low load trailer were involved in the accident.

Police officers are seeking information from the public to identify the vehicles.

Officers report the incident took place at the Gatton Heavy Vehicle Decoupling Facility on October 12, 2021 at around 1.20pm.

Smoking Cessation When it comes to smoking, any time is a good time to quit; and it’s never too late. Studies have shown that for smokers who quit at age 50 the risk of a tobacco related death is reduced by about two thirds; and for those who stop before middle age the risk is little more than for non-smokers.

However, becoming and staying a non-smoker doesn’t happen by accident. Smokers who plan before they quit are significantly more successful than those who don’t; and planning can be done quickly and easily. The decision to quit must be yours and yours alone, but to help you plan for long term success you should enlist the support of family and friends. Your pharmacist can also offer you valuable support.

The ‘cold turkey’ approach works well for many people (perhaps it’s a strategy which is particularly relevant at this time of year when the left-overs from Christmas dinner could be on the menu for quite some time); but for smokers who are heavily addicted to nicotine using a medicine to help the quit process can also make good sense.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) could be an option worth considering. These nicotine substitutes help to treat the withdrawal

symptoms and cravings which can make it so difficult to quit.

When you do stop smoking, your body will most likely still have a need for nicotine – the addictive component of cigarettes – and this is what creates the urge to smoke again. By taking nicotine in a ‘clean form’ – that is without the dangerous carbon monoxide and tar ingredients – the physical withdrawal symptoms are reduced, allowing you to focus your energies on breaking the smoking habit.

The effectiveness of NRT in aiding cessation is well established and is supported by the highest level of clinical evidence. Nevertheless, some people have concerns – unfounded concerns – about the continued use of nicotine to help smokers quit.

The reality is using NRT to quit is always safer than smoking.

NRT medications are available from pharmacies without prescription (and the so-called Step 1,2 &3 patches are now Government subsidised); whilst two Prescription-only products, taken orally, (bupropion and varenicline) may also be useful for smokers who want to become committed quitters.

New resident moo-ved to Toogoolawah Museum A unique and significant gift arrived in Toogoolawah in time for Christmas.

Toogoolawah and District History Group’s Beryce Nelson said the new attraction can be admired in the grounds of The Toogoolawah History Museum.

“It is a beautiful sculpture of a dairy cow done in fiberglass and painted to tell the story of the dairy industry in south-east Queensland,” Ms Nelson said.

“You can look all around the sculpture at the beautiful artwork created by four artists from Scenic Rim Region.”

The Toogoolawah and District History Group were overwhelmed by the generosity of the gift.

“The work was donated by a farmer from the region to ensure it would be placed in

The cow can be seen in the Railway Reserve in Cressbrook Street.

“When you go to see it, please just look, do not

touch,” Ms Nelson said.

It was the end of a successful year for the history group, who revitalised the railway markets late last year.

“A big thank you is due to our new convenor Thereza Vermaak, and to all our great

stallholders as well as all the locals and visitors who came to support the event,” Ms Nelson said.

The History Group expects the markets to resume in February and the Museum will reopen in late January.

Esk Community Choir are anticipating a busy year of musical entertainment in 2022.

The Somerset Music Awards, hosted by the choir, is scheduled for Saturday February 12 at St Agnes Anglican Hall, Esk. The awards are a showcase of musical talent and open to Somerset and Lockyer residents of all ages.

On March 20, the choir and featured guests will take to the Somerset Civic Centre stage for ‘Opening Concert with a Touch of

Irish.’

Their ‘Divas and Delights’ black-tie event on August 27 promises to be a night of musical and social sophistication.

Internationally accredited examiner Matthews Tyson will return on October 8 for the ensemble Concert Performance, a showcase of examinees and Esk Choir Ensemble as a High Tea gala event.

December 4 will round off 2022 with the 32nd Christmas Concert.

RELEASE OF THE 1991 QUEENSLAND CABINET MINUTES

Opening the vault on 1991:

The release of the 1991 Queensland Cabinet Minutes on January 1 this year shows the continuing reform agenda of the Goss Government, and the further distancing of the government of the day from the controversial Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen era.

Digital Economy Minister Leeanne Enoch said the release of the 1991 Cabinet Minutes offered an insight into the Wayne Goss-led administration.

“Many reforms had already been implemented to cleanse Queensland of the police and political corruption that had become entrenched during the Bjelke-Petersen era,” she said.

“In April, the Electoral Districts Act was passed, which abolished the state’s gerrymander system.

“It had favoured regional and remote areas, where fewer enrolled voters were able to elect a member to Parliament.

“Queenslanders’ right to peaceful assembly and protest – previously banned under the Bjelke-Petersen regime – was reinstated with the Peaceful Assembly Bill.”

The Bill categorised the right to peaceful assembly as a ‘qualified right’, potentially subject to restrictions ‘in the interests of public order and public safety’.

New classrooms for small school Students at a small Somerset school will come back to three new buildings after the summer holidays.

Mt Tarampa State School is in the processing of having two new buildings and a new toilet block built on the grounds.

Principal Di Pedersen said the news was a shock at first.

“We only found out about it not long before the holidays, it was a very quick process to get it all organised,” she said.

Replacing the toilet block was expected but the additional buildings were a bonus.

There will be three separate classrooms plus breakout rooms for small group work.

“They’re going to be stateof-the-art buildings,” Mrs Pedersen said.

“More space than what we’ve got now within the classroom [and] better designs.

“It will be quite special for our little school to have such

amazing resources.”

Earlier last year the Department of Education restructured the front of the school, with a playground area and new equipment.

“We’re very thankful to them for the amount of money they’ve invested into our school,” Mrs Pedersen said.

“It’s really nice that they’ve chosen small schools and are giving us a bite of the cherry as well.

“We really appreciate it, that’s for sure.”

To start 2022, members of the Lockyer Valley Fish Restocking Association Inc. gathered at Lake Dyer in Laidley to restock the fish cycle for another year.

“Every Friday myself and our stocking co-ordinator Neville Hayne sell raffle tickets at the QN Hotel in Laidley to raise extra money

to stock the Lake,” Mr Smith said.

Secretary Kylie Kajewski said the group was surprised that fish numbers were low.

“We were not expecting the lake to be at 65% capacity when the fingerlings were

ordered,” Ms Kajewski said.

“What many people don’t know is that native fish cannot breed in the lake, they need brackish or running water.

“This year we have stocked 4000 yellow belly, 4000 bass

and 2000 silver perch.”

Young Xander Kilpatrick and his dad hit the water on the first open weekend and caught himself a nice sized, healthy bass.

“This is proof that the fish are continuing to thrive in

the lake even with minimal amounts of water,” Ms Kajewski said.

“The fact that we can provide this opportunity to our community and especially children is the whole reason why we do what we do”.

Planning a healthy lunchbox Planning and packing a healthy lunchbox gives children the right fuel they need for the school day.

The Queensland Department of Education ‘Start Smart’ program provides resources to help parents and teachers plan a healthy lunchbox.

So children get the right amount of food and nutrients each day, make sure there is a wide variety of food in their lunchbox.

All children, no matter what their weight, height, gender or age, need to eat from the five core food groups every day.

To achieve this, include at least one food from each of the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating five core food groups in your child’s lunchbox daily.

Plan ahead to make packing a healthy lunch boxes easier.

COVID delays term 1 start The start of the 2022 school year in Queensland will move from Monday January 24 to Monday February 7 to avoid opening schools during the predicted peak of the Omicron wave and to allow more time for children to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Education Minister Grace Grace said schools would open for vulnerable children and children of essential workers.

“Principals will implement staffing arrangements to ensure only the minimum number of staff are on site, but we will ensure vulnerable children and children of essential workers can still attend,” she said.

Years 11 and 12 students will participate in learning from home from

January 31.

To ensure other cohorts do not miss out on learning, the end of the school year will be extended for them by one week until 16 December.

“An extensive range of resources and activities will be available to students via our comprehensive learning@home site,” Ms Grace said.

“Directed remote learning won’t be offered at this stage other than for years 11 and 12.

“Parents and carers can decide what their children do over these two weeks.”

The new start date will apply to all Queensland primary schools, secondary schools, including Catholic and independent, and state delivered and sessional kindies.

Drive to help families with school costs

Back to school time can be an exciting time but for some, it’s also stressful and expensive.

Lockyer Community Centre have joined local businesses for their annual Back to School drive.

Collecting donations of school bags, stationery, uniforms, shoes, and healthy school snacks, the centre hopes to assist 60 local families who are struggling financially.

Lockyer Community Centre manager Linda Roberts said the drive is a collaborative effort.

“It is aimed at assisting people who are financially struggling with equipping their children to start a new year of learning,” she said.

Newspower, Shoe Collections, Agricultural Requirements, and Spano’s Supa IGA are participating in the drive.

“I’d also like to acknowledge Givit, the donation platform, they have again been a fantastic support,” Mrs Roberts said.

Gatton News, Gifts and Stationery owner Vicki Spicer said any contribution would be appreciated.

“We’re asking people to donate any type of stationery for back to school for children in need,” Mrs Spicer said.

Ms Roberts said they are particularly seeking donations to equip school students with uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and laptops.

“These are the high value items,” she said.

In December, Mrs Roberts said the centre received a ‘very generous’ cash donation

from a local.

“It absolutely blew us away… so I would like to acknowledge that anonymous donor,” Mrs Roberts said.

“It just shows the true community spirit and the importance of education.

“It made me feel so proud to be part of this community and that there are good, genuine people out there who see the benefit of what we are doing and what we are trying to achieve.”

Cages provided by Agricultural Requirements are located at the two Gatton newsagents and IGA. “People can make their donations at the cages or they can come into the centre and make a donation,” Ms Roberts said.

Families who wish to be considered to receive the donations can contact the Lockyer Community Centre.

Lockyer Communty Centre and local businesses including Darryl Spicer from Gatton News, Gifts, and Stationery are seeking donations of school supplies to help families with back to school equipment.

Pickin’ peas no small feat

WITH THE GATTON AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Gatton and District Historical Society needed to build a new shed to house an impressive piece of machinery they inherited.

At an imposing 3.5 meters tall, their pea picker is one of the biggest items in the museum’s collection.

Gatton and District Historical Society president Rob Wadley said the pea picker is from the 1970s and was used by a Lockyer Valley farmer for peas and beans.

“This machine dates back to the 70s,” he said.

“We started importing pickers from the US in 1954 and this particular machine was purchased in 1972.”

The picker, originally imported by a South Australian harvesting company, was owned by Ross Cutts, formerly of Gatton, who passed away in 2019 aged 78.

“In the 70s, peas and beans were a big crop here in the Lockyer Valley,” Mr Wadley said.

Mr Cutts donated the machine to the historical society in 2005.

The picker – while rusty – is in working condition.

“The original idea was we would set it up in the shed and actually be able to fire it up and run it,” Mr Wadley said.

we could clean it up…so people could see how it works.

“It’s been 20 years since we had peas in the Lockyer Valley and 50 years since this machine was bought.”

As is the case with the evolution of farm machinery, there are earlier version of

the pea picker and modern ones, but the society’s model is a snapshot of this era in Lockyer Valley life.

“You would drive this into the paddock where the peas were,” Mr Wadley said.

“All the pea vines would be thrown in the front, hooks

would drag all the pea vines into the guts of the machine.

“Inside there is a giant rotating mesh, and as it spins around it knocks off the pea pods off from the leaves and the vines and they come out the side to this conveyor belt.

“A bag would be set up and

the peas would drop into the bag.”

An air-cooled motor mounted on the front operates the machinery and hydraulics allowed the machine to keep level in the paddock.

“The front [axle] is fixed, but the back can be moved

independently up or down to ensure it’s level when it’s in operation so that you don’t lose peas,” Mr Wadley said.

“For the 70s, it was stateof-the-art.”

The picker can be viewed at a village open day or by appointment.

BOM’s 2021 climate in review 2021 was Australia’s coolest year in nearly a decade, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s Annual Climate Statement, released on Thursday.

By the end of 2021 - and for the first time in five years - no large parts of the country were experiencing rainfall deficits and drought conditions.

Bureau of Meteorology Senior Climatologist Dr Simon Grainger after three years of drought from 2017 to 2019, above average rainfall last year resulted in a welcome recharge of our water storages but also some significant flooding to eastern Australia.

In 2021, Australia’s mean temperature was 0.56 °C above the 1961 to 1990 climate reference period.

It was the 19th warmest year since national records began in 1910, but also the coolest year since 2012.

Despite the cooling impacts of the negative Indian Ocean Dipole, a period of warmer than usual ocean temperatures in the western Indian ocean, and La Niña, a period of cooling of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, 2021 was warmer than average and warmer than historical La Niña years.

Temperatures were above or very much above average for most of northern Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia’s west coast, but below average for parts of inland New South Wales, and around the southern border of the Northern Territory and

Western Australia.

Rainfall was 9 per cent above the 1961 to 1990 average, making 2021 the wettest year since 2016, with November the wettest on record.

Above average rainfall was observed for much of eastern Victoria, New South Wales, southern and central west Queensland, the western parts of Western Australia, and large parts of the far northern tropics.

Significant flooding occurred across eastern Australia in March and again in November and December.

The major dams in the Murray Darling Basin saw significant increases of water levels, replenishing storages affected by protracted drought.

The Bureau of Meteorology have released their Annual Climate Statement, naming November 2021 the wettest month on record.

Toyota is top selling make in 2021

A total of 1,049,831 vehicles were sold across Australia in 2021, which represents a 14.5 per cent increase on 2020.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that in the context of pandemic restrictions limiting access to dealerships and international supply issues, the new vehicle market in Australia remains positive.

“Despite the pandemic restricting access to showrooms in 2021, Australian consumers found ways to purchase new vehicles and did so in solid numbers,” Mr Weber said.

“The global shortage of microprocessors, compounded by the pandemic, had an impact on the number of cars sold throughout Australia.

Automotive manufacturers are continuing to work to strengthen supply chains in 2022.”

The preference for SUVs and light commercial vehicles has continued to increase throughout 2021. A total of

531,700 SUVs were sold, which is a 16.9 per cent increase on 2020. Light commercials are up 23.2 per cent on last year’s figures with a total of 253,254 vehicles sold.

Passenger vehicles totalled 221,556 sold throughout the year, which is a decrease of 0.2 percent on 2020 figures.

Toyota was the highest selling brand for the year, with 223,642 vehicles sold resulting in 21.3 per cent of overall market share. In second place was Mazda (101,119 vehicles sold, 9.6 per cent market share). In third place was Hyundai (72,872 vehicles sold, 6.9 per cent). In fourth place was Ford (71,380 vehicles sold, 6.8 per cent market share).

Fifth place went to Kia (67,964 vehicles sold, 6.5 per cent market share).

A clean slate when moving out There’s an internet meme that reads: “Keep your house presented in a manner that you could receive company at any minute”.

Sounds great in theory, but impossible to execute if you live in the real world.

Unless you’re the fastidious type, housework can often sit dead last on the never-ending list of things to do each day.

That’s why one of the biggest “discussions” we have with tenants and landlords is the condition a unit or house is left in when tenants vacate.

Understandably, landlords want a military-like white-glove approach to their valuable investment, while some tenants would love to do nothing more than a quick wipedown and then pull the door behind them.

Naturally I won’t name names or circumstances, but we once had a situation where a tenant was moving out and had personally “cleaned” the home. Or so they thought.

With the job done, they were then awaiting the return of their bond and took exception when that didn’t happen.

To them it was spotless, but unfortunately it wasn’t even close.

Lockyer v Stanthorpe in Mitchell Shield Understrength Lockyer were no match for Stanthorpe in the Mitchell Shield cricket match on the weekend.

The home side quickly chased down Lockyer’s total of 68, cour-

tesy of Lockie Pill blazing a half century off 43 balls.

Sent in to bat on a pitch affected by light showers, a much depleted Lockyer 10 man side found the ball nipping around off the pitch

and struggled to nine for 68.

Stand in captain, Josh Raddatz top scored with a determined 28 off 61 balls, but Connor Kleidon was the only other batsman to reach double figures with 12.

Lochie Pill took three for five off five overs for Stanthorpe.

He then backed up by smashing 50 off 43 balls to make the run chase a non-event, giving the home side an easy 10 wicket win.

Mark Vetter said that “Lockyer didn’t give up in the field but were always up against it with a man down and small total to defend. Credit to those who made the effort to travel.”

The Lockyer Valley Turf Club hosted a very successful New Year’s Day Race meeting.

The meeting was well patronised by punters considering there was early morning

rain and a track downgrade that saw numerous scratchings from the nine-race card.
