700 More Trees Planted

BRISBANE Valley-Kilcoy

Landcare would like to thank the numerous people who attended our three community tree planting events held over the last couple of weeks at Yimbun on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

With the help of students and staff from Harlin State School, members and friends of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Users Association, and other interested residents from the Somerset region and beyond, over 700 Eucalyptus trees were successfully planted.

An Australian Government grant to celebrate the Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth II contributed the funding for these tree plantings, but it was the enthusiastic and most welcome assistance from the local school and community groups which

Within a few short years these Eucalypts will restore the tree canopy in the area and will provide the present koala population, and many other species of native wildlife, with food, shelter and habitat.

Users of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail will also trees as they will be able to enjoy a delightful shady area soon, and for many years to come.

All in all, over 80 people were involved in the latest tree plantings. Well done everyone, what a great achievement!

Rocket engine testing facility seeks changes to permit conditions

In early 2020 the Lockyer Valley Regional Council received a Development Application by Scotbar Pty Ltd for Stage 1 of a rocket engine testing facility at Helidon.

Early assessment revealed nearly 3,000 sqm of vegetation had recently been cleared on the site to facilitate the building of Stage 1 structures prior to the lodging of the Application.

The Application said that the “proposal will not impact on vegetation”.

The majority of the already cleared vegetation was mapped on the Gatton Planning Scheme Biodiversity Overlay Code which protects and enhances special

including koala habitat areas.

As a result, Council included three revegetation conditions in the Development Approval of the Application in July 2020.

Two of these were

EMAIL: news@tlsindependent.com.au

required to be met before commencement of the rocket engine testing.

Use of the site commenced without meeting those requirements. This was not followed by any enforcement activity on the part of the Lockyer Valley Regional Council.

More than two years later, around midSeptember 2022, Council embarked on a “compliance audit” of the operation of the Stage 1 facility.

This was only after long and determined pressure by the local community who had been subjected to very loud rocket engine noises over a long period and who had detected apparently unlawful construction on the site and reported it to the Council.

At that time, three separate Council Community Action that the community would be kept informed of progress with the audit.

This never happened.

In fact LCA was recently told, in reference to the compliance audit, that “Council’s dealings and correspondence with the operator in this regard are not publicly available information”.

Further, it was said

are continuing to work with the operator of the motor testing facility at Seventeen Mile Road to achieve compliance with the Development Approval for Stage 1 and to regularise any unlawful activity.”

The phrase “regularise any unlawful activity” is worth noting.

On 16 March 2023 Scotbar lodged a Development Application seeking to have two changes made to each of the three unmet Stage 1 revegetation conditions. If Council approves these changes, each condition will be able to payment that is unlikely to be any different to the cost of meeting the initial conditions.

It is ironic that, one week before the Scotbar application to change the permit conditions, the Council issued a media release reminding residents and developers to ensure that they complied with the legal requirements for vegetation clearing or face potentially very serious

It contained no mention of a post-clearing “regularising” option.

Authorities talk road safety with Fernvale residents

ROAD safety was the talk of the town in Fernvale on Wednesday April 5, with various community groups and authorities converging at Fernvale Village with information stalls.

Residents interacted with Lowood Police, the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, State Emergency Services, Fernvale PCYC, Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Motorcycle Council Inc (QMCI).

Lowood Police Station

Sergeant James Bromley said the event coincided with the QPS Victor Easter road safety campaign.

“For the entirety of the will be targeting speed and driver engagement through random breath tests,” S/Sgt Bromley said.

S/Sgt Bromley said they were especially focused on

the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, truck drivers and bus drivers.

“We want to ensure everyone arrives safely to their destination over these school holidays and returns home safely,” he said.

“Earlier in the year we’ve seen a number of fatalities in the Somerset region, so

we want to reduce those and make sure the community remains safe on the road.”

Fernvale PCYC Braking the Cycle (BTC) program coordinator Samantha Harris said BTC taught young people how to drive but also focused on elements of road safety.

“We have 14 students

active on the program and a lot more students in and have spaces available,” Mrs Harris said.

“To apply for the program the best way to contact me is by phone - 0428 004 086, or at samantha.harris@pcyc. org.au.”

Accurate reports can equal arrests

Accurate reporting of criminal activity can and does lead to arrests, and Toogoolawah Police Station Senior Constable Justin Willcocks has asked residents to make the most of their technology to assist police in investigations.

SC Willcocks said while criminal activity has not increasedgoolawah were not immune.

“We have seen a particular MO of country areas being targeted,” he said.

SC Willcocks said people need to watch for people ‘casing’ residencies.

“If you see a car creeping around, driving in and out of multiple driveways, it’s certainly something to be aware of,” he said.

White said their group joined the event to promote membership and their advocacy.

“We believe it should be part and parcel of the school program so younger students can learn more about road safety,” he said.

“The culture of road safety needs to change dramatically.”

SC Willcocks said recording technology like mobile phones and CCTV was incredibly valuable.

“In a recent break and enter, through a review of hours and hours of CCTV, trying to corroborate every camera available to us and we were able to track and identify a vehicle.

“It took a bit of time but that information’s so valuable.”

said knowing the answer could save your life.

“The best way to stay safe is to stay, call, wait,” Mr Hitchcock said.

“Stay in the vehicle, call triple zero and wait for emergency services and our crews to arrive.”

Mr Hitchcock said anyone trying to exit a vehicle with powerlines across it or electrical equipment underneath it will inadvertently close the electrical circuit and suffer either life-threatening injuries or even instant death.

“Electricity will always take the shortest route to earth and if you step out of a vehicle that has power running through it, that person will become that conduit and risk severe injury or much worse,” he said.

OFF THE RAILS: Inland Rail review raises bypass option

THE INDEPENDENT

Review of Inland Rail led by Dr Kerry Schott AO made 19 recommendations to improve the delivery of the project, including a recommendation to minimise impact through regional towns.

In the report, recommendation 12 said noise and access disruptions should be addressed and towns could potentially be bypassed.

“As Inland Rail train the possibility to bypass the town should be investigated and easements protected for a new bypass corridor,” the recommendation read.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan said the review concerns council has raised ‘for years’.

“Local towns such as Gatton and Forest Hill should not be bisected and left with massive noise, access and

visual impacts if there is a viable bypass option,” she said.

“Dr Schott’s comment thatruption should be addressed is a vital part of protecting the liveability and wellbeing of communities like ours.”

The Australian Government agreed or agreed in-principle to all the recom-

mendations.

“The Australian Government’s support for this recommendation is also great news, and we hope it means investigations by the Australian Rail Track Corporation on potential bypasses are not simply a tick-the-box exercise,” Cr Milligan said.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann also wel-

comed the outcomes, noting the proposed development of an intermodal terminal at Ebenezer, subject to the completion of a business case.

“The proposal to end the Inland Rail at Ebenezer is a good one for these residents and a good thing for the local environment and wildlife,” he said.

Women bridging the cultural gap

A GROUP of women from Papua New Guinea have banded together with an aim to support each other and bridge a cultural gap.

The Papua New Guinea Melpa Women’s Association of South East Queensland Inc. formed last year and its members reside in the Lockyer Valley, Ipswich, and Brisbane.

Vice president Wendy Komoti said the group’s aim was to bring together all the Papua New Guinean women of southeast Queensland, along with men, youth, and children, to address their needs as a community.

“[Our aim is to] try to minimise social issues in the community and try to provide the service that they need in the community, especially in the Lockyer Valley areas and Gatton,” she said.

The Melpa women are from the Western Highlands and Jiwaka provinces of Papua New Guinea and they

intend to form bonds with people from other provinces.

“Papua New Guinea is a diverse culture,” Wendy said.

“As we see, Australia is only one culture which we can understand right away.

“But Papua New Guinea has more than 800 languages

and we cannot understand each other very well.

“Melpa women means we speak only one language, which we understand very well.

LOCKYER Valley Regional Council has received funding from the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Program (BRP) for Mahon Bridge in Grantham.

The Australian Government will contribute $4,994,387 in funding through the BRP, with council funding the balance.

“Mahon Bridge in Grantham has been impacted by load rating assessments and limits forcant impacts on local businesses and residents, so we are thrilled to announce the success of this funding application,” she said.

“The new bridge will provide preferred heavy

Cancer support group still strong ten years on

LOCKYER Valley Cancer

Support Group celebrated its tenth anniversary on April 6.

The group started as a breast cancer support group on March 14, 2013, but has since expanded to extend its support to women and men with any cancer.

Gatton Hospital community health nurse Trish Jamieson, now retired, saw the need to start a support group in the Lockyer Valley to assist those undergoing treatment and post-treatment of breast cancer.

She was joined by McGrath Foundation breast care nurse Tamara Tomasev, from Ipswich, who is still supporting the members today.

The aim of the group is to provide a face-to-face, friendly, social gathering.

The monthly meetings have proved a welcome com-

times.

For newcomers, it is benmeetings and share, or listen, and commune with cancer survivors who can provide a real-life insight into their cancer journeys.

NOT-FOR-PROFIT donation platform GIVIT has observed a more than 100% increase in requests for grocery vouchers from the 4,500 charities and organisations they work with across Australia.

GIVIT CEO Sarah Tennant said the needs of vulnerable Australians have more than doubled on the platform in the past six months.

“Feeding their family is know that there are a lot of parents going without food so that their children can eat,” she said.

“I think of lot of people would be shocked to see how many of our fellow Australians are living at the moment.”

Laidley Community Centre manager Alana Wahl agreed there has been a dramatic increase in demand, but has requested people donate cash, food

vouchers and non-perishable food directly to their local community centres.

“Laidley Community Centre last year completed hundreds of applications for GIVIT vouchers on behalf of the community,” Ms Wahl said.

“Completing GIVIT applications does add to the workload of our staff and volunteers.

“It’s unfunded work, but we do it because we want to see those funds getting to our community members in need.”

Ms Wahl said it was much easier for her team to receive donations directly.

GIVIT donations have gone to people in Toogoolawah, Laidley, and Lowood.

Fresh face on museum committee

THE NEWEST member of the Queensland Transport Museum advisory committee brings experience, a fresh perspective, and a love of learning.

Tony Coonan was appointed by Lockyer Valley Regional Council to the committee in a Community Member position in January.

Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba said he saw great potential in the Gatton museum.

“I’m really really interested to work with people, to ensure that an amazing resource is really well utilised,” he said.

“They’re sitting on something really special here.”

His role at Cobb & Co, where he has worked for 11 years, centres on learning and development programs based on the exhibits and encompasses school holiday programs, talks for adults, and programs for young

children.

Mr Coonan said he has always loved museums and was an advocate for lifelong learning.

“I could see that there’s a real potential where you can engage people into museums and get away from the fact

that our museums and art galleries are something for over-the-top academics,” he said.

“They’re wonderful spaces for everybody, they’re not just for the elite.

“Anybody should feel safe in a museum.”

Foxy Fraulein wins the Laidley Cup

THE GOLD Coast trained Foxy Fraulein won the Porters Plainland Hotel 1600 metre Laidley Cup on April 8. The four-year-old Foxwedge mare jumped clear from the barrier and was never headed in the run.

Trained by Rachel Singleton and ridden by Lilli Barr, the win in the cup came following good form with wins at Ballina and Kilcoy.

Foxy Fraulein carried 54 kg and her front running style suited the Gatton track.

Foxy Fraulein beat the Lindsay Hatch trained Cosmic Gossip for second with race favourite Gentle Prince, third.

The seven-race card produced high quality racing order of the day.

Rain on Friday night meant racing was held with a track rating of a soft 6, and the Lockyer Valley Turf Club is to be congratulated on the condition of the track and the way it withstood the day’s racing.

Generous grass-cutting gift for landcare group

MOWING along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) at Lowood has become a little easier for volunteer Michael Haertig, following West Moreton Landcare’s (WML) acquisition of a brand-new Husqvarna Z460 zero turn mower from Lowood Mowers on Friday March 31.

WML treasurer Des Rinehart said the state government’s Gambling Commugrant of $11,300 and the

‘very welcome offer’ from Lowood Mowers that supported the purchase of the Husqvarna mower would help to speed up maintenance activities along the BVRT.

This latest funding arrangement builds on numerous past successful BVRT partnerships between native plant expert Peter Bevan and his dedicated team of volunteers, local businesses, government organisations

and WML.

Mr Haertig had previously maintained grassed sections of the revegetated BVRT west of Lowood for

years, using Peter Bevan’s privately owned ride on mower.

Currently, some 4 kms of the BVRT west of Lowood has now been revegetated with a unique mix of Australian native plants from across the country. Volunteers also take responsibility for other maintenance work along revegetated sections of the trail.

Parade marshal passes the torch

AFTER 16 years, Gatton’s Anzac Day parade marshal Colin Martin is retiring from the role.

As a Gatton RSL

Subbranch member, Col took over marshalling from Bill Logan in 2007.

Gatton Star editor Chilla Johnston reported the new marshal ‘ably handled the march in front of possibly the biggest crowd ever at a Gatton service,’ in 2007.

Col, 76, has marshalled every parade with only one exception, in 2016 due to health reasons.

He took great satisfaction

in organising the marches and always made sure all the parade participants were in line and orderly.

Contributing to the Anzac Day parades was an extension of his military life. In 1965, Col joined the

army as a regular soldier. During his service, he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He served for 20 years before he retired as a Warrant

During one of his postings

in South Australia, he ran up to ten march out parades a year, giving him ample skills to be the parade marshal.

He joined the army reserves in 1985, where he stayed for nine years.

Originally from Campbelltown, NSW, his last posting was to the Queensland Agricultural College (now UQ) which brought him to Gatton, where he has lived with his family since 1982.

Marshalling the Anzac Day parades was a job he was always proud to do.

For those turning three in 2023

IS YOUR child turning three in 2023?

Together4Lockyer, a network of organisations focussed on early childhood development, is holding a new event for children under 5 years on April 20 from 9-11am at the Laidley Library Green Space on Spicer St.

Despite the theme, the event is not exclusive to three-year-olds.

Laidley District State

School deputy principal Nicci Martin said the event aimed to bring young families together to learn about the services and early childhood education opportunities available.

“The idea is to create an awareness in our community about pro-active early childhood measures or ‘protective factors’ for children to help children thrive prior to starting school,” Mrs Martin said.

“We have a pop-up child health and oral health clinic to help build our health literacies.”

Mrs Martin said stallholders would have activities to engage young ones while parents talk with service providers.

“We’ve got balloon decorating, glitter tattoos, face painting and many more age-appropriate activities,” she said.

Gatton dealer receives national Kubota award

THE TEAM at Black Truck & Ag Gatton have gained national recognition by receiving the Gold Award in the Kubota Australia Dealer Excellence Awards for their commitment to selling and serving the Kubota brand to a high standard.

The award is presented to Kubota dealers across Australia who display high levels of customer satisfaction in equipment sales of Kubota products.

Black Truck sales general manager Jason Black con-

gratulated the team and said the company had done well in achieving the award for their Gatton and Toowoomba locations.

“We’ve won platinum before, we try to win it every year if we can, it’s certainly hard to win,” he said.

“Around Australia, there probably would have been 20, 25 dealers who would have gotten gold.

“And we won gold in two of our outlets.”

Mr Black has been the general manager of Black locations since 2010 and said

the company’s principle is ‘customers for life.’

“Our basic philosophy is, if we look after our customers well enough, they’ll keep coming back and dealing with us,” he said.

Black Truck & Ag Gatton sales representative Matthew Taylor said the Kubota brand was the leading label the company sells and was known for its dependability.

“Kubota has been around the world for a long time, a use their engines,” he said.

“Kubota is renowned for its reliability.”

Irrigation pricing under review

THE QUEENSLAND

Government has directed the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) to review irrigation prices for water supply schemes.

The QCA will consider the supply costs Sunwater and Seqwater recover from irrigators to ensure costs are reasonable, transparent, and

Minister for Water Glenn

Butcher said the government encouraged irrigators to participate in the review.

“The independent regulator will undertake detailed review, talking to irrigators and other stakeholders so that we strike the right balance between the interests of customers and water providers,” he said.

“I encourage all Sunwater and Seqwater irrigation

customers to participate in this process to help the QCA form detailed, well-informed advice on irrigation prices for the government.”

To allow time for the businesses and QCA to consult with irrigators, the Queensland Government is extending a 15% water discount to 2024/25.

As part of this process, irrigation prices will be capped

Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) CEO Jo Sheppard said the federation welcomed the opportunity to work with the government to support the recommendation.

“QFF and its industry members have been advocating for many years on water pricing structures and

the inequities this pricing can present for Queensland farmers,” she said.

“Queensland’s agricultural sector has some of the highest input costs in the world and this decision will not only also be ongoing and broader the increased use of water

Sunwater and Seqwater are due to submit their pricing proposals to the QCA by November 30, 2023. The QCA has published a stakeholder notice and a stakeholder guidance paper with more information. These are available on the QCA’s website.

Lockyer Ford triumphs once more

THE LOCKYER Valley Ford team had another successful outing at Ford Australia’s annual dealer business meeting, picking up the Gold President’s Award for the second year running.

The President’s Award represents the dealership that achieved the highest level of customer service, customer satisfaction, and overall customer experience with the Lockyer Valley Ford team competing amongst 55 rural dealers.

Lockyer Valley Ford & Mitsubishi dealer principal Ian O’Brien accepted the award in Melbourne earlier this year and said it was an excellent win for the team.

Mr O’Brien said a ‘cuswas the key to running any successful business.

“It’s a great achievement for us, of course,” he said.

“It’s about looking after the guests, looking after the

people coming in... customer service is the main thing.

“People that are coming back to buy their second car

from us, or coming back for a service.

“It’s all about the customer satisfaction scores from

customers.”

Ford Australia president and CEO Andrew Birkic, who presented the award,

congratulated the team and said taking home back-toback honours was an incred-

“To say the award is competitive is an understatement,” he said.

“Winning the President’scult.

“Ian and his dealership competed in the most competitive group in the country, with no less than 55 competing for one solitary spot at the top.”

The Lockyer Valley team also received three other top prizes, with service department manager Chris O’Brien taking home the Gold Service Manager Award, parts and accessories manager Steven Kleidon awarded the Gold Parts Manager Award and customer service advisor Regan Hoger picking up the Gold Service Advisor Award.
