Let’s reward our selfless volunteers

THE announcement by minister Mark Ryan that volunteers should be financially reimbursed in some way for the many hours work they do for the community has been universally accepted as an idea worth pursuing. This announcement is particularly timely given the weather we had over the Christmas break. Even though it was Christmas holidays for most, our orange army of volunteers were out in force on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, including my son, helping those who were

badly affected. The amount of work carried out by volunteers in this country is truly amazing and does not stop with our SES groups but also extends to our rural firies and other organisation who are always there in times of disaster to help those who are less fortunate. Of course, the time spent by these volunteers is not only time on the job but also in training and travelling. I am sure that while these volunteers do not expect anything in return

for their community service, I am also sure it would be greatly appreciated and accepted, especially by those who missed spending time with their families and quite often find themselves working in the most appalling of conditions for the betterment of their community. While Minister Ryan said the payment might only be in the way of discounts and or tax breaks, I am sure anything would be greatly accepted by these community heroes.

Veggie box donations EVERYTHING started by Leo’s Little Shop wanting to donate 3 veggie boxes to families doing it tough. After sharing this on Facebook we started getting contacted also by many members of the community wanting to add money, produce, dry food, etc. to add to the boxes and be able to help other families. We received over 50 messages of families doing it tough this Xmas. The community went far

and beyond helping us reach this number so not 3 but 50 free fruit and veggie were given away Monday 18th to local families. From a small gesture of donating 3 boxes, this fabulous community got together showing kindness and helped 50 local families. We are so proud to be part of this fabulous community. Here a list of members and small business that made this possible:

Gatton rocked by hail as summer storms continue to rage FROM PAGE 1 A destructive hailstorm hit the Lockyer Valley on December 23, causing roof and property damage. Lockyer Valley State Emergency Services (SES) local controller Graham Wade said the team started at 9pm on December 23 and ‘haven’t stopped’. “Since the 23rd, we’ve had 217 tasks and they were dealt with by 21 members of the Lockyer Valley,” he said. “Most of it is houses with concrete roofs with broken tiles and there’s also been broken skylights.” Readers of The Independent submitted dozens of photos of hailstones up to cricket ball sized. Mr Wade said most of the jobs the SES completed were in Gatton with a few isolated cases on the outskirts of town and a couple at With-

cott. Rebuild Relief general manager Harry Brown said the storm produced hail between 10 and 13cm, breaking windscreens and damaging roofs, cars, and solar panels. “We’ve received an increase of 35 per cent in enquiries in the past seven days, indicating that homeowners are wanting a roof

and property inspection, independent of their insurance company,” he said. Suncorp Group Executive General Manager of Home Claims Customers Alli Smith said more than 3,000 home and motor claims were lodged across four states from December 23 to 27. “These storms have been destructive with cyclone level winds, large hail and

Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior meteorologist Sarah Scully encouraged everyone to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings. “The best way to do this is to check the BOM Weather app or website for current weather warnings in your

location and if you are travelling, make sure to update your location,” she said. Mr Wade thanked the Lockyer Valley community for their patience and preparedness. Most houses they visited had their gutters cleaned and no overhanging branches. Mr Wade said new members to the SES were always welcome.

>> SRC YOUTH ENGAGEMENT Somerset Regional Council will undertake a full review of their youth engagement strategy, first adopted in 2013. The first step in the review was a consultation process with students from Kilcoy, Lowood and Toogoolawah State High Schools, with further consultation to continue in 2024. PLANNING SCHEME AMENDMENTS SRC will commence a major amendment process to its Somerset Region Planning Scheme, including drafting the amendment instrument for state government review and public notification. It is anticipated the amended planning scheme will be reviewed in mid-2024. ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING UPGRADES SRC will apply for the federal government’s Community Energy Upgrades Fund to co-fund 50% of a $1.5 million project, changing more than 1,000 traditional streetlights to more energy-efficient and cost-effective LED lighting.

Council to ‘revitalise’ Kilcoy streets in 2024 A NEW town green, gateways and safe, green, shady connections will form part of Somerset Regional Council’s (SRC) project to revitalise the Kilcoy streetscape. SRC adopted the Kilcoy Streetscape Revitalisation Master Plan at its December 21 meeting. Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke said the master plan identified critical issues for the Kilcoy community and provided a firm foundation to build upon. “The final master plan and vision incorporates the feedback we received from the community and will result in increased footpaths, car parking and RV parking spaces, along with more public and green spaces for people to enjoy,” Cr Gaedtke said. “All of these elements will contribute to ensuring Kilcoy is a vibrant place with an

Draft planning scheme on its way for Minister’s approval LOCKYER Valley Regional Council officially endorsed its Draft Lockyer Valley Planning Scheme at its December 20 ordinary meeting, paving the way for it to be submitted to the Planning Minister for approval to adopt. Following a comprehensive public consultation period, and consideration of more than 300 submissions, the Draft Scheme was revised in response to community feedback. Planning Portfolio Councillor Rick Vela said LVRC listened to community concerns, particularly issues around the flood hazard overlay and use of the limited development zone. “As a result, council had decided to progress the Draft Planning Scheme without the flood hazard overlay at this time,” he said. “When council went out to notification, it was stated widely and publicly that we were genuine about receiving and considering feedback

and changing our Draft Scheme if needed.” Cr Vela thanked residents and businesses for engaging in the process. “We’re extremely grateful to the community for their feedback during council’s extensive 10-week consultation program,” he said. “Of the 315 submissions

we received, more than a third (111) raised matters regarding the flood mapping methodology, subsequent potential impact on new development and the proposed back-zoning for areas of extreme flood risk. “The community has asked council to reconsider its policy position and coun-

Knights celebrate diamond anniversary

Fernvale school to show off its growth and history at 150th

BY GRACE CRICHTON

LAIDLEY couple Gayle and Peter Knight celebrated six decades of marriage last week. They were married on January 4, 1964 at St Mary’s Church in Kingaroy. They have three children, Derek, Amanda, and Dean, eight grandchildren (one of whom has passed), and six great-grandchildren. They have called Laidley home for the past 23 years, where Gayle has family history. “My grandmother and great-grandmother lived here,” she said. “They’re all buried in the cemetery over there.”

Gayle and Peter Knight of Laidley celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last week. INSET: They were married on January 4, 1964 in Kingaroy.

“There’s a bit of family history there,” Peter said. “At the time, we were living at Walloon and we sold there,” Gayle said. “We just looked around for a cheap house we could af-

ford and we found one here. “It’s been great living here too, it’s the best place.” Gayle worked in hospitality and homecare while Peter drove cranes and trucks before they retired. They celebrated their diamond anniversary with

family and friends at the Queensland National Hotel on Saturday January 6. “They say about diamond wedding anniversary, I say she got a diamond sixty and a half years ago,” Peter said. “I’m not getting another one,” Gayle said.

FERNVALE State School will open its gates to former families, staff and community members to celebrate its 150th anniversary on May 11, 2024. School principal David Raine said a fair bit had already been organised for the big day by the school and Fernvale Community Association. “We’ll have some vintage and classic cars and we hope to have vintage motorcycles and some of the old farming equipment,” Mr Raine said. “We’ll unveil some time capsules, there’s three that I’m aware of. “Two are currently held at the school, one was at 2006 and the other was from the centenary or the 125th, and there’s another one down at the Fernvale Showgrounds

that was put in as part of a bicentennial project to be opened on the 11th of May.” Mr Raine said the event would also feature displays of memorabilia and artefacts with open classrooms, band performances, market stalls and a petting zoo. “We hope to have some old displays of old slates and the inkwells, and the furniture with some children dressed up in some old period costume,” he said. “We’ll have lots of souvenirs for sale.” The school is still accepting photos, stories, and memorabilia from past families and staff. Urban Utilities first planted 1,600 seedlings at the Helidon Resource Recovery Centre in 2019, before adding another 1,200 native gum trees in 2022 to create a seven-hectare haven for local wildlife. Draft Planning Scheme UPDATE - FLOOD HAZARD OVERLAY

MEDIA RELEASE Lockyer Valley Regional Council Draft Planning Scheme has been endorsed to proceed to the Minister for approval to adopt. Lockyer Valley Planning Portfolio Councillor Rick Vela said Council had listened to community concerns about the flood hazard overlay and use of the Limited development zone. As a result, Council has progressed the Draft Planning Scheme without the flood hazard overlay at this time. “When Council went out to notification it was stated widely and publicly that we were genuine about receiving and considering feedback and changing our Draft Scheme if needed,” he said.

Due to valid concerns raised during public consultation, Council has progressed the Draft Planning Scheme without the flood hazard overlay at this time, and will review the approach to flood hazard mapping by committing to the following:

FLOOD HAZARD

Warning time and Flood islands will be removed from the methodology used for assigning Flood risk categorisations. This information will be provided on a separate map.

The speckling effect that had occurred on the overlay map advertised with the draft scheme will be fixed.

How the ‘extreme flood risk’ category is derived will be reconsidered.

Only land identified as ‘extreme flood risk’ will be rezoned to Limited development zone, and not the whole of a property where 75% or more is affected by ‘extreme flood risk’.

Council will investigate using a common design event, such as the 1% AEP + Climate Change, rather than two events, and using the 2022 LiDAR.

Whilst other changes have been made in response to submissions, these are considered minor and not a substantial policy change, and therefore once endorsed by Council the balance of the scheme will proceed to the Planning Minister with a request to adopt and enable commencement. While further work on the flood hazard overlay is undertaken in the coming months, development within flood risk areas will continue to be regulated through a Temporary Local Planning Instrument, similar to that which has been in place since 2012. All submitters have been provided with a response outlining how their submission has been dealt with along with information on Council’s next steps. Based on consultation with AUSVEG’s state members, these were:  Increasing the average daily vegetable consumption in Australia by one serve by 2030;  Sovereign capability for manufacturing farm inputs and establishing or modernising industry production facilities;  Capital upgrades to improve on-farm sustainability through water and energy efficiency schemes;  Regenerative farming through grower education, installation of sustainable

waste facilities on-farm and encouraging First Nations people to pursue careers in horticulture;  A national charter to improve the wellbeing and treatment of workers across the sector, and hold unethical labour hire providers accountable;  A container levy to fund

prevention and detection of pests and diseases on freight coming into Australia. AUSVEG has prioritised some of the most pressing into opportunities within this submission and will continue to advocate for these into 2024. Other significant issues raised by AUSVEG State

Members have, in most cases, been funded (or have the potential to) by alternative funding streams. For example, industry benchmarking to bring more consistency to pricing has been raised by growers, however this project is already being funded by grower levies through Hort Innovation.

Improving grower-retailer relationships is another key topic raised by state members, with recent pricing pressures pinpointing attention on this area. AUSVEG has been addressing this on several fronts and has been a strong voice from industry for increased resources for the ACCC.

With the Senate Inquiry into Supermarket Pricing, a review into Unfair Trading Practices, and the upcoming review of the Australian Food & Grocery Code, there has never been a greater spotlight on retailers’ behaviour. Lastly, AUSVEG has publicly sought policy support from the Federal Government in their Pre-Budget Submission for three key ongoing industry issues:  To combat the critical workforce shortage in horticulture with a pilot scheme for a Harvest Visa;  To increase plant biosecurity agencies’ capacity and resources to combat incursion; and  To implement a national labour hire licencing scheme, a matter this government made an election commitment to, and a recommendation of the Migrant Workers’ Taskforce. WEEKLY CATTLE AND SHEEP MARKET WRAP 22 DECEMBER 2023 CATTLE The cattle market eased this week. With Christmas at our doorstep, some key saleyards have closed for the year and will start up in the new year. Market reports states key buyers and processors were not operating thus entering a cheaper market compared to the previous week. Cattle yardings dropped by 75,112 to 7,452 head, however such a significant decline is expected given the time of year. The feeder steer declined by 36¢ to 249¢/kg liveweight (lwt). Prices across the eastern states eased significantly while lifting for Western Australia. In NSW, the market generally eased, however Wagga prices grew by 15¢ above the national average price of 249¢/kg lwt, fuelled by the availability of suitable cattle for feeders and restockers. The same phenomenon occurred at Carcoar with prices rising by 32¢ above the national average. The limited yardings display producers’ desire for quality young cattle to enter the market in the new year. SHEEP AND LAMB The sheep and lamb market was mixed this week. Yardings eased by 373,799 to 120,267 head, representing a 76% decrease compared to the previous week. The trade lamb indicator eased by 18¢ to 622¢/kg carcase weight (cwt). Prices across the states were mixed with Victorian prices dropping by 33¢ below the national average of 622¢/kg cwt. The National Reporting Livestock Service (NLRS) said there was less intensity for trade and heavy lambs, which suppressed prices. The light lamb indicator lifted by 25c to 541c/kg cwt. The lift in prices was driven by more competitive bidding for lighter lambs and less demand for export and heavy lambs due to pre- organised Christmas kills. SLAUGHTER Week ending 15 December 2023 Cattle slaughter eased by 4,192 to 116,695 head last week. Slaughter has eased significantly in a majority of states, collectively lifting in Queensland and Western Australia by 984 head.

Meat and Livestock Australia’s summer Lamb campaign launched last week.

Sheep and lamb slaughter lifted by 175,712 to 849,118 head. A 26% increase represents the highest week-onweek jump in slaughter for 2023. 2024 SUMMER LAMB AD SKEWERS THE GENERATION GAP The highly anticipated Summer Lamb campaign launched on Sunday night during the 6pm news bulletin on Channel 7 and 9 – skewering the generation gap that has divided the nation. Through this campaign springboard, the ad reminds Aussies that there’s actually more that unites us than divides us. Summer is a key time for Australians to get together with friends and family over a meal or barbeque. To capture this important sales occasion, the campaign

Laidley sale held fortnightly

aims to create talkability for the Lamb brand, while encouraging purchase when shoppers are making their protein choice across retail and food service environments. Building on the ‘Share the Lamb’ brand platform, the 6-week integrated campaign features topical jokes, a good dose of satire and of course, lots of mouthwatering lamb. The long form ad imagines a world in which the generations have been separated by The Generation Gap: an impassable chasm that keeps each age group away from the others. Left to their own devices, each generation has become the worst version of themselves – until a lamb BBQ appears to break down the generational divide and

reunites them once and for all. GOAT PRODUCERS SOUGHT GIRDAC Meat and Livestock Australia is calling for applications from rangeland and commercial farmed goat producers to fill two available committee positions on the Goat Industry Research, Development and Adoption Committee (GIRDAC). The GIRDAC committee is an advisory group which provides recommendations on where goat levy funds are invested in research and development (R&D) and extension and adoption (E&A) initiatives for the Australian goatmeat and livestock industry. GIRDAC convenes virtually four times a year to review RD&A funding proposals, progress of existing projects and results of concluding projects. It operates independently to the Goat Industry Council of Australia (GICA) as an MLA appointed and funded committee. The committee has a national focus and is comprised of commercial goat producers along with value chain, service providers and subject matter expert representatives as required. GIRDAC members provide advice and endorsement relating to goat levy R&D priorities, terms of reference development and review, appointment of service providers and review of current project progress. Interested rangeland goat producers and commercial farmed goat producers are encouraged to submit expressions of interest (EOIs) not exceeding two pages to MLA, addressing the following selection criteria:  details of experience within the goat industry, specifically rangeland goats  details of any experience in research, development and adoption  an outline of skills and experience the candidate brings to GIRDAC  why the candidate would like to be part of GIRDAC. EOIs should be submitted to Melanie Smith and Richard Apps (MLA Program Managers – Sheep and Goat Productivity) via email: msmith@mla. com.au and rapps@mla.com.au by 25 January 2024. MOORE WEEKLY STARS January 8-14, 2024 ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

Restless Rams love starting projects but often lack follow-through, so you can miss the Career Success Boat because you are rushing around and rarely finish things. But this week the New Moon, Mars and Pluto are all in conscientious Capricorn (transiting through your job zone), plus Mars links up with disciplined Saturn. So it’s time to roll your sleeves up, put your head down, and complete an ambitious project with determination and a fiery flourish!

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22)

Mars, Pluto and the New Moon are visiting your domestic zone. So it’s time to hone your multi-tasking skills as you cook, clean, craft, garden, decorate, renovate or entertain. Many Librans will combine work and family in creative ways in 2024. Some will join the family firm, while others start a home-based business. Be inspired by birthday Princess, Kate Middleton: “I’ve been working hard for the family business. I think everyone can see I am pulling my weight”.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Relationships are highlighted, as you link up with a partner (of the romantic or business variety) from home or far away (in person or online). You’re in the mood to help a loved one through a rough patch or cheer up a work colleague who is down-in-the-dumps. Education, commerce and local travel will all benefit from the business-oriented New Moon. When economic times are tough, you need to be innovative, entrepreneurial and think outside the square!

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

This week the New Moon focus is on education, foreign connections, holidays and travel. Jupiter promises increased interactions with international colleagues and/or friends in faraway places. Whereas Saturn highlights work meetings and business conferences, either in-person or online. Even if you’re on vacation, you may have to catch up with an urgent work matter. But don’t believe everything a casual acquaintance tells you … it may not be the full story. The week starts with confusion and possible chaos, as Neptune squares your ruler Mercury. Are you avoiding the cold, hard facts? Are you being gullible - or just plain deluded? Wednesday’s New Moon heralds a fresh financial or sexual chapter. So smart Twins will initiate a strategic savings or investment plan; attract a new business partner or love interest; or reboot a stale relationship. 2024 is a good year to study, research, investigate and extrapolate.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

With the New Moon stimulating your partnership zone, there’s no escaping relationships at the moment! If you’re attached, avoid being a clingy and co-dependent Crab. Strive to nurture your spouse in positive, passionate, and productive ways. If you’re swimming in the dating pool, give superficial suitors the flick. With Pluto transiting through your love zone for the last time in 2024, set your sights on someone who is emotionally mature and ready to commit.

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

It’s a good week to start a healthy new diet or a challenging exercise routine, as the earthy New Moon highlights your wellbeing zone. With adventurous Jupiter and innovative Uranus in your career zone, big changes are coming at work. If you want to survive and thrive in 2024, then you need to keep one step ahead of the professional pack. So, your motto is from David Bowie (who was born on January 8): “Tomorrow belongs to those who can hear it coming.”

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

The New Moon favours delicious daydreaming, creative projects, and hanging out with close friends. But relations with relatives could be frustrating, as Mercury and Neptune stir up your family and relationship zones. Time for diplomatic Virgos to listen very closely, communicate clearly and consult often. If you’re holidaying with family members or partying with friends then pace yourself, otherwise you’ll be exhausted by the end of the week!

With Mercury and Venus visiting your sign, plus Jupiter and Uranus activating your daily routine zone, changes are brewing so you need to be proactive. Saturn urges you to hold onto old ways of behaving, but you need to keep the things that are working well and change the ones that aren’t. Wise words for the week come from birthday great, French writer Simone de Beauvoir: “Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the future, act now, without delay.”

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) The times they are a’changing! And are you worried that you can’t keep up with the constant frantic pace? This week the New Moon, dynamic Mars and transformative Pluto are all transiting through your sign, so strive to be as proactive and productive as possible. Other people are looking to you for leadership. Motivation for the week is from singer and activist Joan Baez (who celebrates her 83rd birthday on Tuesday): “Action is the antidote to despair.” AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Sun links up with your ruler Uranus, so it’s a wonderful time to experiment and explore. Then the New Moon lights up your solitude and spirituality zone, when activities like meditation, chanting and yoga will calm your busy mind and soothe your stressed body. With Saturn sauntering through your money zone, financial stability will take a while to manifest. You’ll have to be satisfied with small, incremental gains along the way.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20) Nebulous Neptune (your ruling planet) squares Mercury (planet of communication) on Monday and Tuesday. So, make sure you double-check all arrangements, and be careful you don’t say ambiguous things to colleagues, clients and/ or customers. Then the New Moon and Mars stimulate your peer group zone. So – over the holiday period – aim to surround yourself with relatives, friends and neighbours who celebrate your talents and encourage your dreams. COPYRIGHT Joanne Madeline Moore 2024

Further growth predicted for 2024

THE AUSTRALIAN real estate market is projected to reach new heights in 2024. According to the NAB residential property survey Q3 2023, property prices are expected to climb 5 per cent on average across the country in 2024. This stronger than expected growth is largely driven by population growth and a more optimistic economic outlook. For investors, this presents a prime opportunity to capitalise on the market and secure stable returns. Key findings from the October 2023 PropTrack Report indicate Australian home prices continued their upward trajectory, experiencing a significant increase of 0.36 per cent month-on-month. This surge propelled prices to reach a fresh price peak, reflecting the robustness of the housing market. In comparison to the previous year, national home prices have exhibited a remarkable growth of 4.54 per cent year-on-year.

Property prices are expected to climb into 2024.

Brisbane house prices grew by 7.09 per cent yearon-year, while the rest of Queensland’s annual growth was 5.95 per cent. This resurgence signifies a notable reversal from the

rapid decline witnessed in 2022, as home prices have rebounded by a substantial 4.93 per cent since the low point in December 2022. These findings highlight the resilience and strength

of the Australian housing sector in the face of changing market dynamics. Despite nearing record prices, the housing market is showing no signs of cooling off, with demand for housing

expected to remain strong. Rising demand and limited supply are contributing to competitive rental markets and higher yields. As construction costs ease and infrastructure spending

gains momentum, the property market is expected to continue its upward trajectory in 2024, breaking records and setting the stage for a booming year. IRONFISH

KENTS UNITING THE VALLEY The brothers hope to cement the relationship between Valley Rugby and the Black Pigs as the new A grade coaches. “We want to get some Gatton Black Pigs guys in to help, that would be cool,” Thomas said. “Us taking over the A grade helps cement the relationship, what we can offer and what the Valley can offer.” Valley Rugby are now taking expressions of interest for players, coaches and volunteers for their 2024 season. “We’re trying to get as many teams as we can in the teenage comp, including a Colts team [under 19 team], together with the Black Pigs, using a bunch of their younger players,” Thomas said.

The brothers described it as ‘a perfect storm’ of coincidences and connections. “Being mixed-race guys as well [Australian and Papua New Guinean], it’s the perfect coincidence,” Thomas said. “The Pigs had this influx of Fijians, Papua New Guineans, Samoans, and for a lot of them having guys like us with that cultural understanding made them feel more welcome and at home.”

Many would also know the Kents as the instigators and coaches of the junior Valley Rugby Union Club, as player-coaches for the Black Pigs C grade men’s team, and as teachers at Faith Lutheran College Plainland. “We’re trying to get as many people involved from our three different pools,
