Lowood Lions and Prenzlau Pride organising committee $9000 raised for hospital auxiliary ALMOST 1000 car enthusiasts turned out for the annual Gatton Hospital Auxiliary Car, Ute and Bike Show on 24 July.

People travelled from across the southeast to view more than 200 cars on show, including the EH Holden that won the Best in Show award.

Gatton Hospital Auxiliary Secretary and Hospital Acting Director of Nursing/ Facility Manager Ann-Louise Adams was thrilled with the turnout.

“We raised more than $9000, which will go towards improving facilities and services at Gatton Hospital,” Mrs Adams said.

“We exceeded what we hoped to raise, so we are going to purchase two vending machines for the hospital waiting room, rath-

er than the one planned.

“After a chilly start to the day, the sun came out and the vibe was amazing,” she said.

The Gatton Hospital Auxiliary Car, Ute and Bike Show will return in 2023.

Fight for toilets not going anywhere

AN ONGOING battle for toilets at the Gatton Heavy Vehicle Decoupling Facility was brought to national attention when two senators and industry leaders visited the site last month.

Wes Walker has been campaigning on behalf of truckies since the site opened in May 2021.

Home care solving work shortage

SUPPORT work company Mable held information sessions in Esk and Toogoolawah last week, promising a home care system which would bring money to small communities and help solve work shortages.

Mable Queensland comPXQLW\ HQJDJHPHQW R൶FHU Brad Grieve said the service was based on the Bell model, named after a small town 1.5 hours north west of Toowoomba.

Aging residents in Bell VWUXJJOHG WR ¿QG VXSSRUW workers, so the community came together with Mable to connect locals looking for work with people in need.

“Under this model a lot of the coordination happens locally, in town,” Mr Grieve said.

“It means that money doesn’t go out of town to the big providers and because you’re engaging local people to provide the services, the cut the bigger organisations charge doesn’t exist anymore.

“Instead of paying $65 to one of the larger organisations and the local worker

From there, care recipients choose from Mable’s locally sourced workers for their

various needs.

“There’s probably people in your life already who are doing it, maybe someone comes over to mow your lawn or they take you out to the pub every Friday,” Mr Grieve said.

“The vast majority of support work is just helping peo-

ple do normal things and that may be going to the shops… getting some ironing done or dusting the curtains.”

“If you have spare time, you could help somebody do those things and earn money at the same time… that’s the way we’re going to solve the work shortage.”

“There is a whole category of things going on in people’s lives and yet they still want to volunteer.”

Mrs Hooper and her husband Andrew Hooper are both in the RFS, a role she said was rewarding.

“It’s a great volunteer job to have,” she said.

“I’m really enjoying it, I

love it.”

One of the biggest challenges facing the RFS is getting new volunteers.

Mr Rose said it was important young volunteers join to keep the RFS going.

“Getting the young involved in really important,” he said.

“And it gives the older ones a lift I think, to know it’s going to continue.

What are the things you want to say?

YOUNG people are invited to participate in a series of workshops at The Condensery celebrating all things unique.

Things I want to say will be run by queer artist Sidney McMahon and give young people the opportunity to make art and potentially a collaborative work with them, leading up to an exhibition at the Toogoolawah gallery next May. Somerset Regional Council Deputy Mayor and chair of The Condensery Advisory Committee Helen Brieschke said council were encouraging participants to delve into their ‘inner weird’ and make art that celebrates them, as they are.

Cr Briesckhe said The Condensery has experienced a surge in popularity recently.

“We have had a tremendous response to our workshops and visitation at the gallery has gone through the roof in recent months,” she said.

“I would encourage interested people to register ASAP to avoid missing out.”

Artist of the month KILCOY Art Society welcomes Ann Caporn as August’s Artist of the Month.

After travelling extensively overseas and in Australia, Ann draws from her own experiences.

A painting has to tell a story, and to that end, Ann strives to paint light and life by capturing the playful interaction of people and animals in the environment.

If a painting triggers a memory of time or place,

Ann can only hope the viewer can share whatever it was that inspired her to paint it.

Progressively drawn to less detail and more impressionism in her work, Ann mainly works in acrylic for the fast-drying time.

But she turns to oil for her special love, portraiture.

Ann Caporn’s work can be viewed at the Courthouse Art Gallery, Kilcoy during August.

Gap in knowledge for migrants and workers

BY GRACE CRICHTON PAPUA New Guineans arriving in Australia may not have a clear picture of what their new life will be like.

Nathan and Nellie, both from Papua New Guinea, have spoken on behalf of their people who are in Australia as seasonal workers.

Nellie is a permanent resident, has lived in the Lockyer Valley for 25 years, and was a founding member of the Lockyer Valley Papua New Guinea Community Association.

“I am mostly representing the seasonal workers because they were not prepared without knowing what is here for them,” she said.

“We need to work together and see people’s issues.”

Nathan is in the process of applying for permanent residency and has been in

Australia for nearly three years.

He said seasonal workers coming to Australia was a good thing, but education is lacking before they arrive.

Nathan and Nellie said the gaps in knowledge range from not knowing what clothes to pack, to not knowing local laws, or not having a clear idea of what their take home salary would be.

“The main concern here is they should have explained from a wage or salary picture,” Nathan said.

“Those deductions [from their wages] should have been explained to them properly.”

Nathan said he met seasonal workers who came at the beginning of winter in t-shirts, with ‘no idea’ how cold it would be.

been buying in the op shops,” he said.

The housing crisis impacts on seasonal workers as well and Nellie said many were not expecting the living conditions they were provided.

“They come here and they ¿QG WKHPVHOYHV VKDULQJ IRXU in a room squashed up which they would never do back home, and with strangers,” Nellie said.

Nathan said he was strugJOLQJ WR ¿QG D KRPH DPLG WKH rental crisis.

“If Australian and perma-

nent residents and citizens DUH ¿QGLQJ LW KDUG WR JHW D rental property, then how would a foreigner and people migrating in have a chance?” he said.

Nellie said Papua New Guineans want to come here and work hard but authorities should be more concerned.

“I want the government or whoever is doing this to look after Papua New Guineans,” she said.

“We need proper housing to sleep in, and wake up, and go to work.”

THE THREAT of varroa mite has made it even more critical for Queensland growers to source local bees.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said under current biosecurity restrictions, bees and hives from NSW cannot be brought into Queensland.

“Anybody who usually sources bees from interstate for pollination is encouraged to engage with local Queensland-based beekeepers for these ser-

vices,” Mr Furner said.

Queensland Beekeepers’ Association secretary Jo Martin urged growers to consider how they could support beekeepers to maintain biosecurity responsibilities.

“If you require hives from multiple beekeepers, ensure you are consulting with the beekeepers on hive placement and encourage beekeepers to undertake mite surveillance checks and UHSRUW WKHLU ÀQGLQJV WR WKH Bee 123 app, prior to the arrival of hives on farm,” Ms Martin said.

GRANTHAM’S ecosystem just got a helpful boost thanks to Flora 4 Fauna volunteers’ efforts on Saturday August 6.

Redtail Hill, a bush food and biodiversity project based in Grantham, is an educational project for the promotion, provision and use of native Australian bush foods, bush medicines and fauna-attracting trees.

Flora 4 Fauna and Redtail founder Kemp Killerby said 12 people from Toowoomba visited on Saturday.

Steph Pearson worked hard alongside other volunteers to plant 60 trees at the Grantham property.

“They hadn’t done any tree planting like this before, especially with native

plants, so they were pretty excited,” Mr Killerby said.

“As we were planting, we were telling them about what the plants do and the EHQHÀWV DQG XVHV µ Volunteers planted about 60 trees, including edible wattles and the medicinal Gumby Gumby plant.

“You can eat [wattle seeds] green like a pea or you can dry roast them and then you put them in a spice grinder and make a KLJK SURWHLQ ÁRXU RXW RI LW µ Mr Killerby said.

Gatton Showgirl reigns supreme at 2022 Ekka SARAH ROSE has taken home the win at the 2022 Ekka Queensland Country Life Showgirl awards for the West Moreton sub-chamber and Gatton Show.

Miss Rose said she ‘couldn’t believe it’ when hearing her name called at the awards ceremony on Saturday August 6.

“It was a big rush of emotion and excitement all at once and a bit of shock,” she said.

“It’s certainly something I never saw myself winning, I didn’t even think I would make it this far in the competition so it’s a big shock.

“It’s absolutely an incredible honour, it’s going to be a fantastic year ahead.”

The ceremony was a long time coming, with Sarah winning Gatton Showgirl back in 2019.

“I didn’t end up going to

my sub-chamber level until the end of last year… and that was after Ekka time which meant I was held over to go to states until this year, so it’s actually been three years coming,” she said.

Miss Rose is currently working as a mixed-practice vet in Toogoolawah.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to all my supporters at the Gatton Show but also...

Toogoolawah, I’ve got a really great bunch of people behind me in both of those towns so I certainly wouldn’t have made it this far without their support,” she said.

“I’m really excited to put our area on the map and make a good name for ourselves over the next 12 months.”

Mr Beattie won Most Successful three times, in Cakes, Scones and Biscuits, Preserves, and Fruit Cakes.

“I keep saying every year ‘this is my last year’, but then I get down there and they’re all done I think, why should I make this my last year, why shouldn’t I go again?” he said.

At this year’s Ekka he scooped up multiple prizes.

He topped the class in cakes and preserves and picked up ribbons in sweets, jams, and jellies.

Win all sewn up LOWOOD SHOW Society president Lynell Jendra picked up blue and red ribbons in the Creative Arts and Crafts at the Ekka.

Of her three entries, a patchwork bag, a lap quilt, and table runner, she won ÀUVW SODFH IRU KHU EDJ DQG second for her quilt.

The quilt was a project set by her craft group.

“It was a challenge done with my patchwork group a couple of years

ago where we had to have at least 50 different fabrics,” she said.

“I think I ended up with about 100 different colours and variations of colours.”

Ms Jendra has exhibited her work at the Ekka for 20 years.

Spot on detail ’66 Code A GT Mustang

BY DAVID GREER LOCKYER man and longtime avid Ford enthusiast Keith Edwards was kind HQRXJK WR VKRZ R൵ KLV immaculate GT Mustang for this week’s My Ride feature.

Keith has always admired the 1966 GTs and when he came across this one on the market and the spot-on original details of the complete nut and bolt restoration, he just had to have it.

Keith said the restoration ion had just been completed 10 years ago when hee purchased it and it is still in the he most tremendous condition to this GD\ , P\VHOI FRXOG QRW ¿QG a single blemish or fault on this Mustang.

This 1966 Code A GT Mustang originally was an American car from California as you could tell by the left hand drive.

It has got the original 289 matching number motor that purrs like a kitten, or a very angry kitten anyway!

Keith said the only unoriginal parts on this car are the wheels and steering wheel, but he does have the original steering wheel put away for

He had a passion for racing and has been racing for 53 years consecutively in all forms, from go-karts to sports sedans.

Black Sows play hard and party harder

THE LADIES celebrated on Saturday, with Gatton Black Pigs Rugby Union Football Club’s Ladies Day event inviting locals, supporters and players present and past to dress up and come together.

Black Pigs Girls Team, the ‘Sows’, played three games against the Toowoomba Rangers, Bears, and the Condomine Cods.

Black Pigs president Jack Slack said the Sows put on a JUHDW H൵RUW “It’s probably the most girls they’ve had here the

whole season,” Slack said.

Sows president Shannon Reynolds said the girls had an ‘awesome morning’.

“We beat Rangers, which we were really hoping to do because we got a win in front of our home crowd,” Reynolds said.

“It was a great atmosphere, perfect weather, there were plenty of people there and everyone had a smile on their face.”

The event was made even more special with the Black Pigs RUFC celebrating 100

Ian Daniels was bowling, commented ‘ah, Divine Intervention!’ and promptly bowled Graeme Zirbel.

The intervention ceased at the fall of the fourth wicket.

Peter Webb and Len Martin steadied the innings for Mike McGovern to take advantage of some loose bowling, smashing 23 off 15 balls.

Nev Maroske continued his good season with 23 retired off 40 balls, while Webb remained not out 25 off 53 balls.

THE LAIDLEY Lions Junior Rugby League Country Cluster Day on Sunday August 6 was a huge success with RYHU SOD\HUV IURP ¿YH GL൵HUHQW FOXEV FRPSHWLQJ LQ the event.

Clubs from Lowood, Rosewood, Fassifern and Brisbane Valley competed with Laidley from ages 6 to 12 on Sunday, with ages 13 and 14 playing on Friday night August 5.

President Matt Thompson said the club had doubled in numbers over four years.

“Performance-wise across the board we’ve been pretty

strong, we’re growing in numbers in those younger age groups,” Thompson said.

The club is hoping for more female players, and more players across all age groups for next season.

“We’ve created a good family environment and we’re pretty proud of it as a committee.”

Club coaching director and U11s coach David Horne said the U11s have performed well since their trip to Townsville in April for the Laurie Spina Shield Competition. ³,W GH¿QLWHO\ JDYH WKHP some drive and taught them some lessons,” Horne said.
