Three Generations Celebrated at Exhibition

THREE generations of an iconic local family from Ma Ma Creek, the Pollocks, were celebrated as the community assembled for the 87th Ma Ma Creek Exhibition on July 29.

The family’s proud history and connection to the exhibition dates back to Merle and her late husband John Pollock, who has been involved in the organisation of the Ma Ma Creek Exhibition since moving to the region in the 1950s.

It was a great honour to catch up with three generations of the Pollock Family at the Ma Ma Creek Exhibi-

tion, which they have had an extensive involvement in for decades, and to congratulate them all for their hard work

and dedication over many the hall structure itself which has led to wider community support and provided a welcoming place in good times and bad.

It is so heartening to see the legacy of the Pollocks in the region carried on today with Daniel Pollock, who serves as President of the Ma Ma Creek Exhibition, as he follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Protect yourself from identity theft with these useful tips

IDENTITY theft occurs when a person takes another person’s identifying information to commit theft or fraud.

Ipswich District Crime Prevention Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy said residents should not be complacent when it came to personal information.

“Unsolicited offers which seem too good to be true or ask you to give

out personal information or bank account details are likely to be scams,” S/ Const Sheedy said. She said there were a number of simple measures residents could take to protect themselves: Create a strong password using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, avoid using the same password for all accounts, change and update your password

regularly, and do not store your password on your computer,

Secure all your personal information at home in a safe.

Never carry your PIN in your wallet with your ATM card. Avoid carrying documents such as your unless necessary – try taking photos on your

phone instead. Before discarding old bills, records, or expired cards, ensure any identifying information is destroyed.

Avoid providing personal information by phone, mail or online and ensure you know who you are dealing with before giving out personal information.

Make sure your letterbox is secure, lockable, and

Australia Post boxes.

Carefully check all transactions on your banking and credit card accounts each month to monitor for potential fraudulent transactions.

Follow up if bills do not arrive on time or you do not receive an invoice.

If you lose your wallet or purse, notify your bank immediately to protect your accounts.

“Identity theft has

become one of the fastest growing crimes in the world,” S/Const Sheedy said.

“It can happen quickly, easily, and most often you will not know you have fallen victim until after the theft has already occurred.”

If you or anyone you know becomes a victim of identity theft, report online at cyber.gov.au/report-andrecover/report

Opportunity awaits you in the Army Reserve service

THE 25th/49th Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment (25/49 RQR) held a Night in the Army Reserve event at the Gatton Depot on August 1 for the public to gain insights into Army Reserve life and engage in conversations with local soldiers.

Reserve service allows individuals to pursue a civilian career or study full-time while serving a minimum of 20 days per year once training is completed.

25/49 RQR Lance Corporal Robert Meharg said the Army Reserve provided roles to suit an individual’s skills and ambitions while hours and locations.

“It’s not like the regular Army where you’re told that’s where you’re going, like a lot of us, we move around, you can take this

job with you with where you go,” he said.

25/49 RQR has its headquarters at Greenbank, company headquarters at Toowoomba, Southport and

Loganlea, and depots across the Darling Downs and in Gatton, Warwick, Dalby, Wondai and Roma.

Lance Corporal Meharg said the team also assisted in

Council talks Growing Regions with Federal Minister

SOMERSET Regional Council had a chance to raise their concerns about the Growing Regions Program with Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, Kristy McBain recently.

Minister McBain met with Mayor Graeme Lehmann, Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke, and CEO

Andrew Johnson, along with Ipswich councillors at an exchange hosted by Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann.

Mr Neumann said it was a good opportunity to raise the issue of the Somerset’s exclusion from the new regional infrastructure program.

“The Minister explained the Government was

currently consulting on the Growing Regions Program, as well as the more urban-focused Thriving Suburbs and Urban Precincts and Partnerships programs, which the Somerset would be eligible for, and would take into account the council’s feedback,” Mr Neumann said. Somerset Regional Council CEO Andrew

Johnson said council’s would seek funding under Thriving Suburbs while looking to have the matter of Growing Regions.

“While not understanding the current approach, council nevertheless appreciates and acknowledges that we are able to apply for funding under the competitive Thriving

Suburbs Program for the current round,” he said.

“Somerset Regional Council has lobbied the government to make guidelines similar for both programs so that no participants are disadvantaged.

More than 50 tyres dumped on Laidley road reserve

A LARGE quantity of tyres dumped within a Laidley road reserve two weeks ago is a timely reminder of the costs of illegal dumping.

A Lockyer Valley Regional Council inspection revealed more than 50 large car tyres at the location, prompting investigations.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Waste Portfolio Councillor Jason Cook said

there was ‘no excuse’ for a person to illegally dump waste and offenders would be caught and prosecuted.

“Council has many tools at its disposal to track down illegal dumpers, including a full-time Illegal Dumping Compliance

to vehicle registration data plus the support of state and other local government agencies,” he

said. It costs council $6 to $17 per tyre to remove, transport, and arrange collection when tyres are illegally dumped, a cost ultimately passed on to the ratepayer.

Cr Cook said the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 provided for the issuing of ‘on the spot’ illegal dumping infringements ranging from $2,470 to $11,610

Helpful hearts go out to seek people in need

LAIDLEY Community Centre are taking a creative approach to community outreach.

Volunteers have sewn 50 hearts, each with a message of support and the centre’s contact information, to be distributed around town.

Laidley Community Centre community worker Sally Peacock said the project aimed to reach people in need and encourage them to contact to the centre.

“We have a lot of people doing it tough,” she said.

“It’s a feel-good, gentle way of letting the community... know that we’re here.”

Laidley State High School students in the Kokoda Youth Program will set out on August 22 to hang the hearts in places where people might

be sleeping rough.

Laidley Community Centre manager Alana Wahl said the centre was assisting people who had never needed emergency support before.

“People are probably sick

of hearing about cost-of-living and the housing crisis, but it’s not going away any time soon,” she said.

“It really is an endemic issue and it shouldn’t be forgotten about.”

AT 11am on August 3, a minute’s silence was observed at 523 grave sites across the country.

It was the Vietnam Veterans Vigil, to pay respect to each individual who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.

In Helidon, more than 20 people attended a service to remember Private Francis Brett ‘Frank’ Topp at his in the Catholic cemetery.

Pte Topp was killed in action on August 18, 1966, in the Battle of Long Tan, aged 19.

Six of his nine siblings were at the service last week, including his sister Gemma Kajewski.

“Our dear late Mum was determined that Frank never be forgotten,” she said.

“[I upload] my artwork to these websites, I set it all up, then they put it on products, they print it, and they ship it all over the world.”

His products have reached Sweden, Germany, Ireland, England, United States of America, Iceland, Japan, China, and of course domestically.

Stephen’s father Adrian, who helps with his business, said they have 82-100 products on the market and are likely to increase this range.

It is the appeal of Stephen’s artwork which makes the product popular.

“People don’t just buy his product, they buy his art,” Adrian said.

“It’s all authentic, contemporary Indigenous

Treat the family to a relaxing weekend

CEDAR Gully Olives invites families to enjoy a day of picnicking and relaxation during the inaugural Fire in the Grove on August 27.

The event provides the perfect opportunity to bond

with loved ones and warm up near a brazier fuelled by olive wood.

It’s an ideal day leading up to Father’s Day, with gift stalls and art charcoal drawings suited for the big day.

There will be live music by Toowoomba artist Steve Milligan, blacksmithing demonstrations, free face painting, and an opportunity to taste the olives and learn how olive wood charcoal is

made.

Cedar Gully Olives owner manager Sam Andreata said it was a perfect time of year for the occasion.

“We noticed a lot happening in the valley during

spring and May for Mother’s Day, but there’s not much for this time of year, so we thought we’d do something for around Father’s Day,” she said.

“We’ll also be asking all

stall holders to donate for a the Mulgowie Rural Fire Brigade.”

Rural Ambassador Matthew Petty has come out of his comfort zone to become a voice for young producers.

On August 19 he will compete alongside the state’s best for the title of 2023 Queensland Rural Ambassador.

The Marburg Show Rural Ambassador 2022 comes from Mount Walker and is a self-employed small business owner, specialising in contracting labour.

Matt does anything and everything in the spectrum of agriculture, construction and civil industries including property maintenance, operating machinery and fencing.

“I help a lot of people who have got country and who are just trying to keep their property maintained and make it productive,” Matt said.

He said his time as a Rural Ambassador had been ‘pretty mind-blowing’.

“It’s been really good going to the shows I have been able to attend, they’ve been really good and very

supportive,” Matt said. Coming out of his comfort zone, Matt got pretty good at shaking hands and present-

ing ribbons at the Marburg, Ipswich, Lowood, Kalbar and Rosewood Shows.

Govt to stop fall armyworm

GROWERS will receive additional support against fall armyworm with a nationally coordinated program to reduce the pest’s population and its impact.

The $2.1 million initiative will arm vegetable growers with the tools and knowledge they need to wage war on the ravenous pest. The program will generate shared knowledge about the pest and its management through regionally based area-wide management groups, on-farm activities and workshops.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said getting the science right was vital.

“Our growers are on the front line when it comes to managing fall armyworm, so it is important that we support them with sci-

ence-based practical management tools,” he said.

Lumpy skin disease detected in exported cattle

THE Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has been advised by the Indonesian Agriculture and Quarantine Agency (IAQA) that Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) has been detected in a small number of Australian cattle exported to Indonesia—after those cattle had arrived and spent some time in Indonesia.

“We respect the rightcal authorities to seek relevant assurances that live cattle exported from Australia comply with their animal health requirements.

“This includes being free of lumpy skin disease.”

NFF President Fiona Simson said the industry and the states and territories were working closely with the Australian Government to provide the assurances sought by

“In the meantime, Australian livestock products continue to be traded, including live cattle to Indonesia where the trade remains open,” Ms Simson said.

Using farm work to build life skills

A PRENZLAU couple are mixing their passions for education, community, and regenerative agriculture to create a unique learning experience.

world but we can change our patch.”

The workshops revolve around building practical skills, like using power tools, building, and husbandry, but

competency.

“Everyone will have their own take away from it,” Megan said.

Currently, their clients are

primarily teenagers and older children with special needs but the program is adaptable and could expand to suit home schooled children, migrant workers, and women

returning to the workforce.

Central to the support programs is the adoption of regenerative agriculture.

The farm employs rotational grazing for its herd of pigs and its poultry with the intention of utilising the fertilized paddocks for cropping.

“What can I use my animals for, to help the soil, to then help us feed our families, feed the community,” Megan said.

Produce from the farm may eventually be sold at farm gate, but their purpose at the moment is to drive home a deeper understanding of agriculture and food production among the workshop participants.

“There’s too much of a disconnect between us and the soil, between us and the food we eat,” Megan said.

“And I know everyone’s been saying it for so long, but the youth are ready for it.”

this schmick looking 1970 Holden Brougham V8.

Jared said he had always been into cars and had wanted a Brougham since he was young.

“As a child, I was into Hot Wheels car collecting, and to be honest, I still pick one up here and there when I see something of interest to add to the collection,” he said.

Jared said he had a thing for the Verdoro Green Brougham but had one until about a year ago when his wife purchased one as a birthday gift.

“It was the best present I’ve ever been given,” he said.

“The second owner we purchased it from got it from the original owner, who had it since 1970 and was a Holden rep who used it as a company car.

“It never had a vinyl roof, as the rep ordered it without, as he had heard of issues with rust under the vinyl, so he opted out of that option.”

The luxury options were all added to the Brougham with air-con, power steering,

power windows and full leather interior all standard from factory.

The motor is the Australian Holden 308 V8 which was a factory change in 1970 from the 307 Chev in previous

years models.

The 308 motor is backed by the 2-speed power glide automatic gear box.

Jared said an upgraded ignition setup is the MSD distributor and coil to make the

Brougham a reliable turn-key cruiser ready to drive any day needed.

“Holden Broughams were only built for a very short time between 1968 and 1971 before being replaced by the

long-wheelbase Statesman models in late 1971 on the redesigned HQ platform, so they’re fairly rare vehicles nowadays,” he said.

Jared is an Ipswich Classic & Muscle Car Club member

and likes to go out for drives with his family.

“My family like to get it out at least weekly for a drive,” he said.

“It doesn’t take much motivation to get me out.”

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

August 7-13, 2023 ARIES

Rambunctious Rams are in the mood for fun, festivities, action and entertainment! However – in order to capitalise on the Mercury/Jupiter and Sun/Venus maximum enjoyment vibes –some forethought and planning are required. Otherwise (with disruptive Uranus squaring retrograde Venus) you could make a foolish regret. So – for astute Aries – hasty criticism is out, and thoughtful positivity is in.

TAURUS

Venus is still in retrograde mode, so plans will proceed slowly. And Wednesday looks particularly stressful when the Venus/Uranus square highlights problems at home. On Thursday, Mercury and Jupiter stimulate your friendship zone, so it’s a good time to network with your peer group and catch up with close friends. Be inspired by birthday great, actress Gillian Anderson: “I believe people are in our lives for a reason. We’re here to learn from each other.”

GEMINI

With retrograde Venus and the Sun in your ways to connect with people and contribute to your local community. Education and short trips are highlighted, plus expect plenty of phone calls, snail mail, texts, tweets and emails. But you’ll also have to handle stress, frustration and challenges along the way. The secret to a successful week is getting the balance right between being spontaneous and being responsible.

CANCER

fairyland? With Venus (planet of money andcial zone, you’re in the mood to spend up a are rock-solid before you commit to a major purchase. And – if you can – delay making any big-ticket buys (and signing contracts) until after Venus moves forwards on September 4. Your motto for the week? Spend in haste, repent at leisure!

LEO

The Sun (your ruler) squares Jupiter, and retro Venus (in your sign) squares Uranus, which boosts your inclination to jealous, possessive or disruptive behaviour. It’s time to loosen your intense grip on a loved one or work colleague! Otherwise, you’ll just drive them away with your demanding Drama Queen antics. You’re in the mood to text and tweet, socialise and circulate. But are you sending mixed messages? Strive to be more discriminating and diplomatic.

VIRGO

Vigilant Virgos to the rescue! The Sun and retro Venus increase your interest in assisting those who are sick, in trouble or in need. You’ll

better you’ll feel and the more useful you’ll be. A personal matter should also improve, as Jupiter helps you put a positive spin on a previously frustrating situation. Rest and relaxation are important, so make sure you set aside some quality time with a very special person … you.

LIBRA

Venus is still in retrograde mode (until September 4) so be careful how you treat other people, in person and online. Self-indulgent behaviour, unrealistic expectations and unfair criticism will just boomerang back on you! So, your mantra is from birthday model and actress Cara Delevingne: “The energy you give off is the energy you receive.” Some quiet meditation or soulful contemplation will help you get through the week in a more relaxed state.

SCORPIO

With Venus reversing through your career zone, proceed carefully with a complicated professional project. If you are too hasty (or too stubborn) then you’ll experience communication problems with a work colleague, client or customer. Plus, retro Venus squares Uranus, so unpredictable feelings could re-surface, as loved ones push your emotional buttons. Simmer down, Scorpio, otherwise you run the risk of turning a minor matter into a major obsession.

SAGITTARIUS

Jupiter (your ruler), Uranus and retrograde Venus disturb your job and daily routine zones, so expect communication chaos, relationship rumbles or work frustrations. It’s also a week when unresolved issues from the past could be dredged up all over again. Do your best to release pent-up frustrations via a chat with a trusted family member or a compassionate colleague. Spending quality time with your favourite four-legged friend will also lift your spirits.

CAPRICORN

Mercury and Mars are both visiting fellow-earth sign Virgo, which activates your conscientious side. But Venus (planet of harmony and perfection) is in retrograde mode, so things won’t run according to plan! Do your best to sort things out promptly and professionally in your capable Capricorn way. Inspiration for the week comes from famous Wild West sharpshooter (and birthday great) Annie Oakley: “Aim at a high mark and you will hit it.”

AQUARIUS

Are you feeling hemmed in at home? Uranus squares retro Venus, which could cramp your free-wheeling style. Try cleaning, decluttering, renovating and/or extending your present living space so it’s more open and spacious. You need room to breathe! Expect some domestic confusion and family drama, as impatience and uncertainty overtake commonsense. If you try to escape from your current commitments, then loved ones won’t be impressed.

PISCES

Thursday favours education, social media and local community connections, as Jupiter

Neptune and Saturn both transiting through your sign, it’s time to set inspirational longterm goals and then work hard to turn them into concrete reality. No procrastinating, Pisces! And no lame excuses! Be inspired by model and actress Cara Delevingne (who turns 31 on Saturday): “Believe in yourself. Make yourself proud.”

cricket, ensuring that places on the team will be hard won.

Lockyer Cricket is gathering momentum.

In addition to the Vikings project, the Lockyer Lightning were beaten and Davis Shields, the elite representative competitions in the Darling Downs. in September with the T20 last year, undefeated, by the Vikings.

This competition serves as a selection trial for the in Cairns, and it is to be hoped that Vikings players will again be selected for southeast Queensland.

With the season rapidly approaching, the Valley Vikings will commence training at Cahill Park on August 10 with old and new faces encouraged to get up and going.

BVSC hosts Qld rep teams

BRISBANE Valley Soccer Club (BVSC) played host to four Queensland Christian Soccer Association (QCSA) representative teams on Monday night July 31 in practice matches.

BVSC president Boris Jaramenko said it was great to host the QCSA teams with around 200 people visiting the Lowood Rec Reserve.

The QCSA U14 boys, U17 girls, U17 boys and U21 men took on combined teams from BVSC, giving them a taste of higher-level competition.

“Because of the scope of difference for the clubs

involved they go to different places,” Jaramenko said.

“We’ve got about 15 or 16 players who were selected, so we thought it might be a good idea to bring them out to us at Lowood for a night of training.”

Jaramenko said the event was a big deal for the club.

“It exposes players from the club who might not necessarily think they’re up to it to say ‘oh okay, I might work a bit harder’,” he said.

“Then they’re prepared to put themselves into those rep teams.”

Perfect weather for breaking records on BVRT

UNDER a supermoon and in near perfect weather, 46 cyclists took on the 6th annual Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) E2Ex2 (end to end, times two) challenge on Friday August 4 with two new records set.

BVRT Users Association president and event organiser Paul Heymans said the challenge was a very specialist event, only for ultra-endurance riders.

“We more or less run it for them because they don’t get many events targeting their niche market,” Heymans said.

on Friday night, riding south to Wulkuraka before turning around and riding 161km back towards Blackbutt, where they turned a total of 322km.

Ipswich rider Gavin Johnston said it was great to see high-pro-

“The faster guys did what we all thought they were going to do,” Johnston said.

“[Odams] lifted the playing some of the local guys, but it was the local guys who set the record.”

Heymans and Johnston thanked Brisbane Valley Roasters for hosting the event control and Linville Store and Café for staying open throughout the challenge.

Festival of Cycling returns

STRAP IN for adventure as the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) Festival of Cycling returns on September 9. The festival promises to showcase the very best the rail trail has to offer, giving riders the opportunity to embark on adventure with friends and family through the region.

Event director Paul Heymans said the festival brought together riders ofturous experience.

“This event celebrates the spirit of cycling, catering to all skill levels,” he said.

Chadwick broke the previous record of 11 hours 34 minutes with a time of 10 hours 56 minutes.

Seamus Taylor also set a new record for the youngest to complete the challenge at 16 years

“There was a time when we thought 18 hours was a good record, but they’ve really narrowed it down,” Heymans said.

“Together we can explore the breathtaking Brisbane Valley Rail Trail in the safety of the off-road trail adventure.”

The BVRT Festival of Cycling offers three distances to choose from: 45km, 75km, and 100km.

The routes start in Harlin (6.00 am), Esk (6.30 am), and Coominya (9.00am), and concludes in Blackbutt in collaboration with the Blackbutt Avocado Festival.

LIONESSES OUTMATCHED AFTER PERFECT SEASON

SATURDAY August 5 was a tough game of football for the Laidley Lions under 14 girls team.

After a brilliant season in the 2023 SE Community North competition and with only one prior loss to their name, the girls lost 32-4 to Redbank in the community

Coach Dennis Collins said the girls played incredibly for

“At the end of the day the girls put their heart on their sleeves and really played some good football, but we were just outmuscled,” he

said.

“We went into the game injured with a few of our key players.”

It was no surprise the team

452 points for and only 66 against across the North competition.

Collins’ daughter, Amber, was a standout with top tries in the competition (26) and top points (208).

Fellow player Maddy Barford said the girls put their heart into every game across the season.

“It’s been a great season and we’ve loved playing with each other,” Barford said.

Collins said the team

groups next year, and he is hopeful to continue strengthening the Lions girls’ sides.

“For a country town Laidley goes alright, we should be able to recruit some players across the Lockyer Valley,” he said.

Collins said it was an emotional day for the U14 girls, but they were already winners in his eyes.

“A loss is not a failure, it’s the next step to success,” he said.

“It’s been incredible to see the way the girls have played over the whole season, to come from where we’ve come.”
