McCallum talks energy at breakfast BY JACOB HAYDEN ASSISTANT Minister for Energy Lance McCallum paid a special visit to Kilcoy to speak with businesses about Queensland’s energy projects and plans. The Kilcoy Chamber of Commerce (KCC) hosted Mr McCallum, local businesses and Somerset Regional Councillors for Business and Breakfast at the Kilcoy Visitor Information Centre on November 2. Mr McCallum spoke in detail about the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan (EJP), and the process of building the Queensland SuperGrid. He said 80% of the work for the EJP would be in the regions, and the ‘opportunities for regional Queensland are limitless’. Mr McCallum also spoke about the Borumba Dam Pumped Hydro project, which was currently working through the environmental processes. He estimated the project would create 2,000 construction jobs, and that ‘for every one job, three indirect jobs would be created’. Businesses queried Mr McCallum about local procurement, opportunities for tender and the future of hydrogen in the energy sector.

Councillors raised concerns about public amenity in regional areas and the need for investment into local roads and infrastructure to support energy projects. KCC president Lee Robinson said the Business and Breakfast session was very

productive. “The information presented by Minister Lance McCallum was very informative and allowed the businesses to see what opportunities are coming to the region, and how there can be collaboration between the govern-

ment, their projects, and the businesses in the region,” Mr Robinson said. Mr Robinson said the Borumba Dam Pumped Hydro project was of great interest to Kilcoy businesses. “Also, the opportunity for the region to house solar or

renewable energies here and to be part of those projects,” he said. “We hope some of that investment will come into the region.” The KCC will host retired Australian paralympic swimmer Matt Levy, OAM

on November 22 for Business After Dark. “That will be an amazing, inspiring evening,” Mr Robinson said. “To have him present for the Chamber, people will just go away inspired by Matt and what he has to say.”

Ma Ma Creek school’s trivia extravaganza MA MA Creek State School set the scene for a movie lover’s paradise on November 4, as the school hosted its inaugural movie trivia night at the town’s community hall. Organised by the P&C Committee, the trivia night was designed to fund Ma Ma Creek State School students’ school camp in 2024. Ma Ma Creek State School principal Nathan de Mey said school camp was an integral experience that all students should have the opportunity to attend. “Camp’s a big thing for kids, this year we went off to Currimundi and our focus was for students to overcome challenges and work as a team,” he said. There were prizes for the best-dressed costume, and a huge wheelbarrow raffle, as well as six rounds of trivia.

University students making mental health a priority BY GRACE CRICHTON GATTON’s university students are tackling the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging each other to speak up. It is an issue close to second year student Tom Hamer’s heart. In September, Mr Hamer organised the University of Queensland Gatton campus’ annual mental health talk. He was joined by students Brooklyn Devenish and Jade Tetlow, along with Beyond Blue volunteer speaker Mike Nowlan, who all shared their stories to provide real life examples of how to deal with mental health struggles. Mr Hamer, 19, began promoting positive mental health in high school and is continuing the conversation at university.

“I push the message of ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’, the importance of talking about your emotions to trusted peers, and that it’s not a sign of weakness,” he said.

Particularly among young men, Mr Hamer wants to model and promote positive masculinity. “We’re all about building a positive, good message about masculinity,” he said.

“One of the key things I push is that talking about your thoughts or feelings helps you to understand them, and then to control them.” Ms Tetlow said mental

health was an important issue to be addressed. “It isn’t a topic that should be stigmatised, and I really hope our talk was able to end some of the stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness,” she said. UQ residential life manager Andrew Fletcher said having student leaders active in the mental health space made a ‘world of difference’ to residents living and studying on campus. “The fact that our Residents’ Club put such an emphasis on events such as this is fantastic as it promotes the importance of mental wellbeing to all our residents, breaking down barriers and stigmas for those that need help but don’t know how to access it,” he said. Community unites at Peace Lutheran Market Day PEACE Lutheran Primary School held its 33rd annual Art and Craft Market Day on November 4, with the community uniting in support of the Gatton school and stall holders from the region. Visitors had the chance to delight in more than 50 market stalls, including stalls with baked goods from the school’s parents and produce items donated by local farmers. Peace Lutheran Primary School deputy principal

Wes Brauer said the event was an integral part in supporting the school. “Gold coin donations for the day go towards the school’s P&F committee, which supports the school by supporting bus runs for sporting events and purchasing equipment for our classrooms,” he said. “It’s a great way for our community to support the school and our local vendors.” JESSE HAMILTON

Gatton Army Reserves earn Team Award for soldiering excellence BY JESSE HAMILTON

SEVEN soldiers from the 25th/49th Battalion, The Royal Queensland Regiment (25/49 RQR), were honoured with an Army Team Award for Good Soldering at the Gatton Depot on October 31. Commanding Officer of 25/49 RQR Lieutenant Colonel David Fraser said the award recognised an outstanding team who consistently demonstrated a commendable level of Defence values, teamwork, and overall excellence. “As part of Gatton Depot, Alpha Company, what we’re looking for is a demonstration of Army values, in particular values of excellence,” he said. “They’ve demonstrated that through their commitment to their unit, their strong performance in

recruiting, in community engagement, in their attendance at training, and

their support at a variety of unit activities through this year.”

Lt Col Fraser said the award recipients would now receive tangible benefits to

further their careers in the Defence Force. “The Army provides them

funding to go and do a team working activity, something that challenges them and rewards them as well,” he said. “The aim of that activity is that it continues to enhance their teamwork.” The Gatton Depot has grown by 40% this year. Lt Col Fraser encouraged people to explore the benefits of Reserve service. “One of the main things that Army Reserve offers is a variety of skills, experiences and training,” he said. “New soldiers learn how to work as team members, how to achieve often difficult and challenging tasks and to develop and practice selfdiscipline.” If you are interested in a role in the Army Reserve, call 13 19 01 or visit: adfcareers.gov.au/armyreserve

and Keeping seniors connected Pause remember this through art of letter writing Saturday BY JACOB HAYDEN “WHO doesn’t love getting a hand-written letter in the mail?” Able Australia Active Living Program for Seniors coordinator Rachelle Williams is looking for seniors in the Lockyer Valley, Somerset and Ipswich regions to join the Lasting Letters Program. Mrs Williams meets with active and outgoing seniors on the third Thursday of every month at Rosewood Library, where they write to seniors throughout the region. “Lasting Letters has two groups of seniors… the first group get together and they have a bit of social time and morning tea, and they would write letters,” Mrs Williams said. “They would be writing about what they’ve done that month, their dogs, their cats.” The second group includes

seniors with transport or health difficulties who receive letters to respond to. “Out towards the Lockyer and the Somerset, [transport] is a massive issue,” Mrs Williams said. “Or they might have health issues, maybe they can’t hear or see very well.” Mrs Williams said seniors, like all people, need to socialise. “This is a fairly simple way of actually getting that contact happening without them leaving home,” she said. One of the program’s writers is 94-year-old Marjorie Davis, who was born in Goomeri where she grew up surrounded by pineapples, dairy and timber. Despite her age, Marjorie is very busy socially, has a wicked sense of humour, and is a brilliant story-teller. Able Australia is looking for more receivers to join the Lasting Letters program, and Mrs

ON THE 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month each year, we pause to remember the service and sacrifice of our fallen men and women who gave their lives in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Remembrance Day is one of the most significant days of our year and for more than 100 years we have paused in silent reflection of the sacrifice of our service personnel. It is a demonstration that we will not forget them. At 11am this Saturday, November 11, I encourage you to commemorate our fallen by sharing one minute’s silence in memory of the more than 102,000 Australian men and women who have died in over a century of service in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. This time can be a very emotional one for veterans and their families. Advertorial

Fire ants affect us all

Eradicating fire ants is a fight we need to win, the consequences of failing are far too great They’re small, copper brown, feisty and sting, and if we don’t all work together they’ll be here to stay. First found in Brisbane in 2001, fire ants are a category 1 restricted matter (Biosecurity Act 2014) and considered one of the world’s most invasive pests. And rightly so, they can have irreversible consequences on our environment, economy, human health and outdoor way of life.

They can destroy crops, damage machinery, and render paddocks, parks, playgrounds and backyards unusable. If we don’t work together to stop them, fire ants could infest all of Australia costing up to $2 billion per year, forever, surpassing the annual damage done by our country’s worst pests: feral cats, wild dogs, foxes, camels, rabbits and cane toads. Do you love your backyard cricket, barbecues and walking on the grass without shoes on? This is what the National Fire Ant Eradication Program is working to save. Australia is also the only country currently focused on eradicating this pest. Fire ants have spread too far in other countries, and these nations have given up. Our new Fire Ant Response Plan 2023–27 has an outside-in approach and focuses on: • containing fire ants and delimiting current infestation • strengthening compliance with the legal frameworks available to stop the spread of fire ants • researching and improving the way in which we eradicate fire ants • working together to protect Australia from this invasive pest. Our fire ant containment area forms a horseshoe around the infestation—spanning from Moreton Bay in the north, west to the Lockyer Valley, east to the Gold Coast and south to Tweed Shire. Eradication treatment is being conducted around the inside of this band. Under the plan, the first areas that

will receive treatment are suburbs in the: • Lockyer Valley • Southern Downs • Scenic Rim • southern Gold Coast. As fire ants are cleared from areas, we will progressively move eradication activities inwards until all areas are treated. Fire ant eradication treatment is the only way to protect Australia from fire ants and the devastating impacts they can have on our way of life. To give our country the best chance of success, we must treat: • 100% of all targeted properties • all properties up to 3 times per year for 2 years • whether fire ants are visible or not.

Just one missed nest could jeopardise national eradication efforts. For our rural and semi-rural farming communities, as well as all those who rely on these communities, fire ants pose a severe problem if left unchecked. They can do more damage to our agriculture and the environment than Australia’s worst invasive pests combined. Fire ant expert and entomologist Dr Ross Wylie says that modelling shows the current incursion has grown slowly, in comparison to other countries. “It’s a different story overseas—fire ant have spread at about 4 km per year. Fire ant spread in the United States is reported to be 50 km per year, and in China it’s 80 km per year. Australia’s efforts are showing a promising result when compared with countries where fire ants aren’t controlled.” Had the eradication program not been in place, it’s estimated fire ants would have already spread as far north as Bowen, west to Longreach, and south to Canberra by now, causing destruction in their path. In the United States, fire ant nests are part of the landscape. Texan farmers can only use a portion of

Fire ant nests found along a fence line in Ipswich.

their land, the rest has been taken over by fire ants to the point it’s beyond treatable and in many cases the land is unusable. Residents are also unable to walk to their washing lines without being stung.

Small change makes big difference

ADVERTORIAL AS WE head into the festive season and the busiest shopping time of the year, Lockyer Valley Regional Council and the local business community are once again backing the power of the ‘buy local’ message. Lockyer Valley Mayor Cr Tanya Milligan said council

welcomed the opportunity to once again be a Diamond Sponsor of Your Town, a six-week shop local initiative that’s all about supporting the local economy. It’s set to begin on November 8 and run until December 13 – just in time for the Christmas period. “The festive season is once

again upon us, so I ask all residents to support our local businesses through whatever purchases they can,” Cr Milligan said. “By shopping at participating stores for Christmas during November and December, local shoppers will have the chance to win one of six $1,000 prizes.

“All it would take is for every Lockyer Valley resident over the age of 12 to spend $10 locally, rather than outside of the region, and over the space of a year this would have a direct economic uplift of $18.907 million. “Locally, this has the power to create an additional 187 new local retail jobs, just

by changing where we spend $10 each week. “This is a perfect example of small changes making a big difference. “When you support ‘Your Town’ and shop locally it helps to keep jobs and strengthen the long-term economic future of the Lockyer Valley.”

Take an AR adventure and discover the Lockyer Valley ADVERTORIAL LOCKYER Valley residents will have the opportunity to experience an interactive game that’s set in the real world these Christmas school holidays. Agents of Discovery is an augmented reality (AR) app designed to get the kids out of the house, learn about nature and explore our region. In the lead-up to Christmas, Lockyer Valley Regional Council will

release new missions to explore some of the region’s town centres. The missions will feature games and challenges to share facts about the Lockyer Valley’s local flora, fauna and unique locations in the region. Current missions are available to complete at Lake Apex and Fairways Park. Anyone can join – all you have to do is download the free ‘Agents

of Discovery’ app on your mobile device and complete the missions at the set locations. Gatton’s town centre will feature between November 20 and December 3, and then Laidley’s turn will be between December 4 and 17. Help us to share the AR adventures and go into a draw to win a $25 Shop Local Gift Card. To enter, simply share a photo of your mission

adventure and tag the photo on socials with #lockyershoplocal. All participants can collect a reward from the Lockyer Valley Visitor Information Centre just by showing their Agents of Discovery completion screen to staff. No data or Wi-Fi is needed to play a mission once it’s downloaded, so grab your hat, water bottle and comfy shoes and join in the fun. LVRC

The final draw will take place at the Lockyer Valley Christmas Carnival on December 15. There are several entry boxes throughout the region, including at the Laidley Library, Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre and The Independent’s Office. LVRC

With the festive season just around the corner, spend your money locally and support your local businesses however you can.

Region prospers when you shop locally ADVERTORIAL INVESTING in local communities is everyone’s responsibility and that’s why Somerset Regional Council is proud to come on board as a Diamond Sponsor of the Your Town promotion. The promotion actively supports the ‘buy local’ message which is all about encouraging people to shop and buy locally. Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said it was more than just an important message and should be adopted by everyone who lives in the region. “When you buy local, it stays local,” Cr Lehmann said. “More jobs will be created in your town, the community will prosper and people will be more connected than ever to their region. “I was born and raised in the Somerset region and I’ve seen many small businesses over that time do it tough,

including my own, that’s why I know first hand how important it is to shop local and support our community. “It’s something myself and my fellow councillors are so passionate about and

I encourage everyone in the community to become passionate about it too.” Cr Lehmann said small businesses had found it particularly tough the past two years on the back of a

global pandemic and natural disasters. “Small business and the families that rely on that income are still recovering from the fallout of a few tough years,” he said.

“With the festive season just around the corner I encourage everyone to spend their money locally and support these businesses however they can. “These purchases truly

make a difference in their lives and the more money we can spend locally, the more our region will prosper.” Somerset Regional Council does whatever it can to support local businesses and their families because it’s critical for the future growth of Somerset. Audit Committee member and Deputy Mayor Councillor Helen Brieschke said council kept money circulating in the local economy by employing locally and buying locally where possible. “Council has taken a number of steps to ensure our procurement process favours local business where it’s possible,” Cr Brieschke said. “This has resulted in an increase in council spending with suppliers within the Somerset region, a very positive economic result for the entire community.” SOMERSET REGIONAL COUNCIL

Significant strides for Park Lake Adare

ADVERTORIAL YOUR Town Diamond Sponsor Park Lake Adare is creating a family-friendly community with a strong emphasis on connecting with nature and outdoor living. Property developer Peter Brown said Park Lake Adare would offer an affordable opportunity for individuals and families to realise their dream of building a home. “We’ve seen a growing interest from local families who are eager to build their dream homes and experience an authentic acreage lifestyle within a community of like-minded individuals,” Mr Brown said. He said the development

has made ‘significant strides since last year’. “We’ve been actively working on Stage 1, and title registrations were achieved in early October,” he said. “Excitingly, the construction of the first home is now underway, marking a significant milestone.” Mr Brown said the Lockyer Valley was known for its friendly and supportive communities. “It’s a true hidden gem, offering all the conveniences one needs while surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes,” he said. “It’s a fantastic place to call home, with a wonderful community and easy access

to the city.” Park Lake Adare is deeply committed to supporting the local economy and is collaborating with Toowoomba’s Newlands Group on construction. “Our on-site manager, Mick, owns and operates Lockyer Lawn in Order,” Mr Brown said. “Our talented photographer, Luke from Voice Photography, is based in Gatton, and Signs on Time from Toowoomba takes care of our on-site billboards and signage.” Preserving the local environment is also a top priority at Park Lake Adare. “We’ve developed an

extensive Vegetation and Rehabilitation Management Plan and a Koala Management Plan, and we take these responsibilities very seriously,” Mr Brown said. “We work closely with a team of environmental consultants, meeting weekly to ensure that all our on-site activities align with our environment, flora, and fauna plans.” Mr Brown said sales have gone exceptionally well, and Park Lake Adare made the strategic decision to proceed with the construction of Stage 2 and 3 simultaneously in response to the sustained demand. “This decision is a testa-

ment to the ongoing demand and interest in the growing community,” he said. “Our acreage lots start at just $279,000 and come fully serviced with underground power, NBN-ready, and full-pressure town water. “Moreover, residents have the privilege of living in close harmony with nature, featuring a 20,000sqm lake and a vast expanse of 100 acres of parklands. “This is an exceptional chance for those seeking a relaxed, nature-focused lifestyle, all while being conveniently located just a short drive away from major supermarkets, a post office, schools, an aquatic centre,

a business centre, medical facilities, and more.” Mr Brown said the decision to become a Diamond Sponsor for The Independent’s ‘buy local, support local’ campaign was rooted in Park Lake Adare’s longstanding relationship with the newspaper since the inception of its project in mid-2022. “We’ve witnessed the fantastic work The Independent does for our local community, and we are enthusiastic about continuing our support for local businesses,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back to the community that has welcomed us, and to contribute to the vitality of the local economy.”

Preserving the local environment is also a top priority at Park Lake Adare.

Local businesses define a town ADVERTORIAL RAY Bachmann Real Estate owner Ramon Bachmann is a second-generation business owner in Laidley and has been a lifelong resident of the country town. Taking over ownership from his dad Ray four years ago, Ramon has been part of the real estate agency for 23 years and said local businesses played a crucial role in shaping the identity and vitality of country towns

like Laidley. “Small businesses are the backbone of country towns,” he said. “I think they’re a big part of what makes towns like Laidley or Gatton what they are.” Mr Bachmann said local businesses in the Lockyer Valley had a strong bond with their community that is not found with large corporations in cities. “Small businesses

around here are very generous from their sponsorship of sporting teams from juniors to seniors,” he said. “Without them, you wouldn’t have small towns, it’s very important to support local small businesses, otherwise, big corporations will come in and take over.” Mr Bachmann encouraged everyone to do their shopping locally this holiday season when smaller businesses need support.

Keep your country towns thriving ADVERTORIAL JOHN Schollick has called the Lockyer Valley home for more than 25 years and truly believes in backing local businesses. With a long involvement with the Lockyer Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, and several businesses operating in the area, he’s made it his mission to back local initiatives.

“It’s hugely important that we have a thriving business community,” he said. “We need to work closely together and shop local, instead of going to the cities and big box stores or online. “Otherwise country towns like ours simply won’t exist.” Mr Schollick said many of the businesses in the

region are family owned and run. “When you support these businesses, you’re supporting a family business in your neighbourhood thrive,” he said. “You’re not contributing to some CEO’s Christmas bonus. “Why wouldn’t we want to keep this beautiful piece of country thriving, not just surviving.”

Welcome to Your Town BY BRUCE HORROCKS THE SAYING that small businesses are the heartbeat of your neighbourhood and the spine of your local economy is very true. It is also true that small businesses build the spirit of which our small towns are known for. As the Christmas shopping silly season draws closer we are thrilled to once again launch Your Town. Shopping locally is now more important than ever, as we ask our local businesses to support the schools, the fire brigades, and the sports clubs, we should never forget that to shop locally is to shop smarter. The person behind the

counter is a local too and in many cases you will probably know them. They probably have children at the same school your child goes to. There is a fair chance their children play sport in the community and maybe they even go to your church. The money you spend will stay locally amongst those businesses which will in turn support our local community. In future years, these will be the businesses that will employ the younger members of our community. The Independent knows the value of local business, in fact we deal with local businesses on a weekly basis and it is our pleasure to once again launch Your

Town. It encourages our readers to shop at the local stores showing the Your Town banners and in return we

will give away six $1,000 gift cards. Not a bad reward for spending your money locally.

Christmas is in the air and by shopping locally you will get better value and better service. What’s more, you’ll

stand the chance to win $1,000. Let the fun begin. Bruce Horrocks General Manager

New CR-V embodies safety and style SINCE its introduction into the Australian market in 1997, the CR-V has been synonymous with quality and reliability. The all-new next generation CR-V further bolsters this reputation whilst delivering outstanding technology, safety, handling, and style. With families in mind, the all-new CR-V has been designed to deliver greater space and passenger comfort. Customers also have a choice of 5 and 7 seating, 2WD and AWD across the lineup. For the first time in CR-V, customers can choose a e:HEV hybrid variant. Honda’s e:HEV hybrid powertrain has become increasingly popular across the Accord, Civic, Honda ZR-V and HR-V ranges, delivering a dynamic combination of performance and efficiency. output have been significantly enhanced. The core Honda CR-V values continue, such as the eye point and driving position

to provide greater visibility for city driving and winding roads and hip point to make it easy to get in and out of the car.

From the moment it made its way onto our shores over 50 years ago, the HiLux quickly established itself as an Australian classic. MY RIDE

1965 XM Falcon Deluxe has it all BY DAVID GREER

ATKINSON Dam resident Andrew Jeffrey is the owner of this well-kept 1965 Ford XM Falcon Deluxe. Andrew said after moving to the Valley from up north, he had a fishing boat that was getting no use, so he decided to offload it and replace it with a weekend cruiser. Being a Ford man since a young age and owning an MK2 Cortina and a few others, Andrew said his dad’s first car was an XP Falcon and he has always had a love for 60’s cars, which gave him the drive to find and buy an XM or XP. Andrew first saw the XM for sale in Esk and was on a mission to take it out for a test drive as soon as possible. Being a mechanic and working in the mines, he said he was underground relaying messages to his partner Jessie to have a look and take videos so he could see it. The XM Deluxe is very original with the matching numbers six-cylinder 170 Pursuit motor and badges with a column shift 3-speed manual gearbox. It still has original spats over the rear wheel arches, which only came with the Deluxe model.

The XM Deluxe is very original with the matching numbers six-cylinder 170 Pursuit motor and badges.

Andrew said he had replaced a few bits and pieces since having the car, so it was a reliable everyday driver. The XM Deluxe has had

old wiring, fuse, exhaust, and fuel system parts replaced to keep it running healthy. The interior has been re-trimmed at some stage,

The interior has kept with the original opal blue and white colour scheme, and still has original carpet and floor mats.

keeping the original opal blue and white colour scheme, and still has original carpet and floor mats. The XM cars did not come

with a radio back in 1965. Andrew said he wanted to keep it that way for originality, so he keeps a little Bluetooth boom box for some

tunes. Andrew only knows a portion of the car’s history but knows the previous owner bought it from west of Toowoomba decades ago. Being keen to drive whenever he wants, Andrew has the Deluxe on full rego and meets up with some car enthusiast friends a couple of times a month on a Sunday at the Coominya Hotel for lunch and then a cruise somewhere to get the old collectable cars out for a blast. Andrew said he has a future project in mind to do an XP Ute to sit in his shed next to the XM but said this one may not stay original as he would love to have a V8 conversion under the hood.

ARE YOU THE PROUD OWNER OF A

Real Classic? Would you like to have your pride & joy featured in the next edition of My Ride? If so, we would love to hear from you!

THE LOCKYER AND SOMERSET INDEPENDENT

MOORE WEEKLY STARS November 6-12, 2023 ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

On Monday you’ll find being resourceful and strategic pays off well at work. Tuesday and Thursday favour creative ideas and thorough research. On the weekend there’s a Mars/ Uranus opposition so don’t blow your budget with a spontaneous spending spree. Or commit yourself to an ambitious project that you don’t have the time or enthusiasm for. Short-term big talk is no good if it doesn’t translate into long-term action. Patience and persistence are the keys.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

Your ruler Venus transits through Libra (from Wednesday until December 4) which highlights food, fashion, wine and good times. But remember adventurous Jupiter and disruptive Uranus are still charging through your sign, so expect some thrills and spills along the way. Your motto for the moment is from singer-songwriter-musician Neil Young (who turns 78 on Sunday): “As you go through life, you’ve got to see the valleys as well as the peaks.”

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

Have you been wondering (and worrying) about your professional options in the future? The ideal is to follow your dreams and make your day-to-day work a pleasure rather than a full-time chore. This week Neptune, Pluto and Saturn push you to turn an abstract idea into a rock-solid reality via an inspiring vision and a strategic plan. From Friday onwards, you’ll find clear communication and lively conversation are the keys to harmonious relationships.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

With the Sun, Mercury and Mars all activating your entertainment sector, jump out of your Crab comfort zone, let your hair down and have some fun! Plus, when it comes to your personal and professional friendships, strive to be extra patient, and keep the lines of communication and creativity wide open. Your motto for the moment is from birthday great, singer-songwriter-musician Joni Mitchell: “I want to have fun, I want to shine like the Sun.”

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

The week starts well when the planets promise a financial boost and/or pleasant interactions with colleagues, clients or customers. But on the weekend – courtesy of the tricky Mars/Uranus opposition – expect some disruptions or surprises when there is friction between family needs and work responsibilities. Things will gradually settle down if you choose diplomacy over drama, encouragement over criticism and acceptance over judgement.

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

Are your goals for the future ambitious enough? This week (with Jupiter and Uranus activating your aspirations zone and your ruler Mercury charging into confident Sagittarius) there’s no room for false Virgo modesty or passive procrastination! The Sun, Mercury and Mars also stimulate your thought processes and encourage you to come up with a cracking plan and stick to it. Begin with a dream and then work hard to make it a robust reality.

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22)

With Venus (your power planet) trining Pluto and then transiting into your sign, you’ll be at your magnetic and charming best! So it’s a wonderful week to create, collaborate and communicate, in your charming Libran way. As birthday great Albert Camus wrote: “Charm is the way of getting the answer ‘yes’, without having asked any clear question.” But avoid making impulsive financial decisions. Take your time, do your research, and get a second opinion.

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Things are intense at Casa Scorpio as the Sun, Mercury and Mars visit your sign. Pluto makes positive aspects to Venus and Mercury, so passion is high and you’re in the mood to listen and learn. But look out anyone who tries to knock you off your chosen course! Wisdom for the week is from Scorpio singer-songwriter Lorde (who turns 27 on Tuesday): “Take care of your thoughts when you are alone and take care of your words when you are with people.” SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21) Sassy Sagittarius – you’ll experience the greatest satisfaction if you share your goals, aspirations and dreams with like-minded colleagues and friends. Group projects and creative collaborations are favoured. But this week’s stars could also disrupt your daily routine or stir up an old health issue. So do your best to get the balance right between being creative and being thorough; between having inspirational ideas and making practical progress.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) Fault-finding Saturn could exacerbate a problem with a friend, neighbour or family member. But hopefully Mercury and Venus will come to the rescue and teach you an important celestial lesson. If you look for the best in the person involved, and work hard on improving your communication skills, then the relationship will gradually improve and have a good chance of longevity. It’s important to take baby steps, with a heart full of love and forgiveness. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18) The Mars/Uranus opposition could stir up your restless and reckless side, as you unleash your Inner Rebel. But try to do so in appropriate ways that don’t upset loved ones, antagonise authority figures, or endanger your personal safety! A professional or domestic challenge could also test your mettle. Aim to approach problems with a brand-new perspective. Be inspired by singer-songwriter (and birthday great) Neil Young: “One fresh take can change everything.” PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20) With the Sun, Mercury and Mars activating your aspirations zone, it’s a wonderful week to dream big dreams and set ambitious goals for the future. But family and friends must be handled with an extra big dollop of diplomacy and discretion. As birthday great Joni Mitchell reminds us: “There are things to confess that enrich the world, and things that need not be said.” On the weekend there’s an accident-prone Mars/Uranus opposition so drive extra carefully. Barefoot bowls isn’t off to a good start with rain each Friday night so far. We will still persist and roll up next week, so come along and have a fun night. CRICKET LOCKYER A GRADE The Glenore Grove Roos had a confidence booster when catching in-form Helidon. The Heat posted a competitive 189 with Matthew McMahon 57 and Harish Nair 42 leading the way. Jaxon Utz was again dangerous with 3-19. It was a close finish, but class players Jaxon Utz on 50, and Codey Blake on 40 ran them down with three wickets in hand. Shaun Ashley took 4-46 for the Heat. In a stirring match at Forest Hill, the Premiers, Ropehill were just a little too strong for the Goats, who came close. Batting first, Ropehill put on 6-231 through Reece Teske 59 and Nathan Tessier 36. Forest Hill were well in the hunt for a while, through Idrios Wiggins 41 and Harry Engel on 33, ultimately reaching 9-184. Had the Goats taken their chances, they may well have reversed the result. Gatton Fordsdale continued their winning run, notching 6-231 (exact score of Ropehill) in desptaching Mulgowie for 117. Steve Kleidon continued his 50+ streak, with 69, backed by Connor Kleidon on 45. Regan Jackwitz offered resistance from the Mulgas with 43, while Jacob Sudhaus bagged 3-37. VALLEY VIKINGS The Vikings declared their innings closed against Laidley at a mammoth 6-398. Laidley, quite rightly, realised that a serious run chase would cost them wickets and so elected a safety first reply. Against committed defensive batting, the Vikings could make no inroads, claiming only 3 wickets as Laidley reached 220. The only thing learned is that these two sides will be tough opponents as the season progresses. MITCHELL SHIELD Due to rain on Sunday morning, the game between the Lockyer and Warwick was called off. Walking netball trial coming to Cahill Park

Yowies women invited to play

BY GRACE CRICHTON

LOCKYER Valley Netball Association (LVNA) are trialling walking netball from November 22. This less-intense version of netball has no running or jumping, making it an ideal game for players new to the game, older folk, or those who want to get back into the sport. LVNA publicity officer Kyle Gelhaar said it also suited people who may have past injuries which prevent them from return to the court. “People who just can’t play full speed netball anymore but still want to get out, be active, and have a bit of fun,” Gelhaar said. “If you haven’t played before it’s probably a good

stepping stone to learning the rules and what you can and can’t do.” Walking netball is open to everyone aged 13 years and older.

Games will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6pm at Cahill Park Netball Court, Gatton. “Come and try walking netball for this short five

weeks, and if they like it we’ll incorporate a whole season next year,” Gelhaar said. Contact lvnetball@gmail. com or visit Facebook.

FOLLOWING a very successful return season, the Kilcoy Yowies Rugby League Club have invited Kilcoy and surrounds’ women to sign-up for the region’s first women’s team. Club president Rob Fischer said this was a ‘big step’ for the Yowies. “We had a pretty good first season with the men this year, and out of that we had some interest from some of the partners of the boys, asking the question about a women’s team,” he said. “The boys go to training and their partners sometimes come with them, and this gives them an opportunity too to do some training, form their own team and build their own identity.”

Fischer said the club would accept players with no experience in league if they are willing to jump in and learn the ropes. “That’s what we did with the men’s team this year too, some of those guys never played league before,” he said. “The idea at the moment is to get as much feedback as possible before sign-on day because we’ve got to let the Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League know are we going to have a team by a certain point, so we can put them in the draw. “Get out there and give it a go.” To find out more, contact the club on Facebook or email kilcoyyowies@ yahoo.com JACOB HAYDEN

Superhero celebrations for Gatton parkrun 500th BY JESSE HAMILTON

GATTON parkrun marked its 500th run event at Lake Apex on November 4. Runners and volunteers donning their favourite superhero costumes to mark the special milestone. Parkrun Australia volunteers -and returning runners were celebrated at the event. The Gatton parkrun has been running for more than ten years. Runner and volunteer Tracey Wood marked her 400th overall parkrun while runner Paul Robin celebrated his 488th run at Gatton since 2013.

Parkrun Australia regional ambassador Lachie Miners said the 5km volunteer-run event had a strong emphasis on making sure volunteers were seen as participants. “We want to see volunteering equal to running,” he said. “If you turn up, you can decide whether you want to volunteer or run, so we want to make as many volunteering opportunities as possible.” Miners said volunteers can contribute in several ways, including time stamping, photography or supporting those walking the event as a park walker volunteer.
