Growing Regions IN REFERENCE to the article “Regional grants program draws line through Lockyer” in L&S Independent, May 31 2023, I would like to know why our Federal Government has the right to exclude the Scenic Rim, half of the Lockyer and all of Somerset from the ‘Growing Regions’ program and instead include them in the ‘Thriving Suburbs’ program while including Surfers Paradise, Hope Island and the Gold Coast generally in the ‘Growing Regions’ program?
medical facilities in these areas, so people are forced to travel.
Along with that, the jobs associated with these facilities are also located in Brisbane.
Our governments need to make a serious effort to update specialist facilities in regional areas and think hard about what was called ‘decentralisation’ back in the 70s.
Whatever happened to that?
If that had been continued with, then we would not need to have this issue rear its ugly head.

This has to be the most stupid governmental rearrangement that I have ever come across in my life.
Surely Surfers Paradise, Hope Island, the Gold Coast and even Noosa should be included in the ‘Thriving Suburbs’ program while retaining the Scenic Rim, half of the Lockyer and all of Somerset in the ‘Growing Regions’ program.
The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King is the member for Ballarat in Victoria.
How can she have an adequate knowledge of our area to be able to properly apply the guidelines available to her?
There are absolutely NO suburbs of Brisbane or Ipswich in the Scenic Rim, half Lockyer and Somerset.
Indeed most of those areas are not even suitable for intensive suburban development.
Most of those areas comprise the major food growing areas of Queensland.
Any future ideas of pushing suburban growth into these areas should be scuttled immediately.
The major reasons for people travelling to Brisbane is that there are almost no specialist
Lastly, the ABS needs to make sure that its statistics tell the right story about areas instead of the ridiculous lies they tell using statistics.
If they couldn’t make the sexual questions from the last Census give useful information, then how can they make assumptions about regional areas without consulting the facts?

3) If the event did take place on or near Seventeen Mile Road, it was likely at one of the quarries, as virtually everywhere else is bushland and National Park.
If this was the case, was there any connection to the rocket engine testing facility on Seventeen Mile Road?
Three weeks ago on May 17th, residents from Grantham to Crows Nest, were alarmed by a loud noise coming from somewhere in the Helidon Hills region, at just after 9am.
Some from Hampton reported, via social media, buildings shaking as a result of the disturbance.
Many were rightly concerned and wondered if it was an accident of some kind and were there pollutants or toxins to worry about.
We have since learned from Jim McDonald’s letter in The Independent last week, that he was invited to observe what was referred to as a ‘Controlled Explosion’ on or near Seventeen Mile Road, and apparently on the 18th.
If this was indeed the same event that was witnessed on the 17th, then a number of serious questions must be asked:
1) What organisation or government body was in charge of the exercise and what warnings if any, were issued and to whom? Additionally, was Council aware of, or informed of the event?
2) What consideration was given to the wellbeing of wildlife including koalas, in the vicinity? A noise that could be heard over a range of at least 40km would have caused serious harm to koalas potentially resting or feeding within
4) As an invited observer to the event, does Mr McDonald consider that the location and lack of warning was appropriate for such a detonation?
Mr McDonald’s praise for the way the event was conducted and responded to, along with the scarcity of detail about the purpose and nature of the explosion, leads us to imagine that it was nothing more than a publicity stunt of some kind.
I have written to Mr -
cation of these and other concerns but at the time of submitting this letter, I have not received a reply. Robert Brown Grantham Editor’s note: Queensland Police Service Media and Lockyer Valley Regional Council provided the following statements: ‘Due to operational regarding police training exercises are not provided to the public to preserve methodology. Neighbour-
noise related to exercises when appropriate. There was no risks or impacts and remote location of the exercise location.’ - QPS “Lockyer Valley Regional Council was not advised of, nor aware of the exercise taking place and there was no communication between the facility or our Local Disaster Management Group, which is somewhat disappointing.” - LVRC

“Years ago, we had pot plants in these four gallon drums.

She said the society decided to limit the size of pots to 12 inches, to save volunteers’

Eileen also spent her time in the canteen.

Times have changed with more Marburg residents working outside of town, which many locals think of now as an outer Brisbane suburb.
“Marburg has become a suburb of Brisbane, which has taken away the rural environment over time,” Mr Abraham said.
“The older people are passing on and the younger ones aren’t taking on, they’re working somewhere else.” Eileen said.
Despite that, it seems the Steinhardts are here to stay.

Hyundai gives Sonata a new facelift
THE NEW Hyundai Sonata revolutionises the 2019 model and is reborn as a dynamic, progressive new model with low-slung, elegant proportions, more aggressive styling and future-oriented technology.
The new Sonata presents a fresh take on the fourdoor coupe that captures the essence of Hyundai Motor’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design philosophy.
It has a distinctive image with an N Line-based exterior design that conveys sports coupe style with a long hood, low front-end and fastback roof line.
The low-slung exterior automotive design and embodies ‘The Sportiness’ with a horizontal front-end layout that integrates Hyundai’s signature Seamless Horizon Lamp, hidden headlamps,
wide grille and air intake for a more dynamic and aggressive appearance.
The wide-set, hidden headlamps create a dramatic light-
vehicle’s wide stance while adding a futuristic touch.
The contrast between sharp, linear elements and
clean, supple surfaces emphasises the dynamic design.
The black garnish along the bottom of the body rises towards the rear.
At the rear, the new H-lights further emphasise the high-tech image and wide stance.
In addition, the swooping
spoiler-shaped trunk lid andnish on the standard model reinforce the impression of a high-performance sports sedan, while the addition of a rear spoiler and dual twin-tip 19-inch wheels on the N Line further amplify that image.
The new interior boasts a driver-centric layout that matches its sportier exterior image while implementing a future mobility sensibility.
Hyundai model, Sonata has a panoramic curved display combining 12.3-inch driver information clusters and a 12.3-inch AVN infotainment system in a modern, simple dashboard layout emphasising horizontal lines and expanded sense of space.
The interior has undergone upgrades for an improved passenger experience.

Premier backs regional newspapers
QUEENSLAND Premier
Annastacia Palaszczuk opened the 115th annual Queensland Country Press Association (QCPA) conference held in Brisbane on Friday May 26.
The Premier described regional newspapers as ‘absolutely vital’ and as the ‘lifeblood of their to help ensure that a larger share of the Queensland State Government advertising budget be directed at communicating with regional Queenslanders through independent regional newspapers.
The Premier made the comments at the QCPA conference, referring to the ‘resurgence’ of independent newspaper publishers in Queensland as a contributing factor.
The announcement from Premier Palaszczuk follows the recent Victorian Government commitment to ensuring one full page
of government advertising is placed in every regional newspaper every week.
The Premier’s pledge also from a recently released Deakin University report on media innovation which found ‘securing the future
of quality and reliable news and information platforms in non-metropolitan areas is in the national interest’.
The Deakin report refers to numerous senate inquiries examining aspects of rural and regional news since 2016, as well as the
Digital Platforms Inquiry, conducted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and a parliamentary inquiry into the future of local newspapers.
“Simply put, it is now widely understood that
local news matters to our democracy, but it has struggled and requires support,” the report said.
“Our research suggests government policies and advertising spending is factor in providing baseline
surety to the long-term sustainability of small, independently owned news outlets in rural, regional and suburban Australia.”
The QCPA conference and awards night broke several records including the most nominations received for awards ever.
Delegates travelled from across regional Queensland and from all eastern states to attend, including Mareeba in far north Queensland, Dubbo and Narrabri in central NSW, Gippsland in Victoria and the Barossa and Clare Valleys of South Australia.
The Lockyer & Somerset Independent were among place for Best Community Advertising Promotion (Your Town 2022), third place for Best Newspaper Advertising Feature (Your Town 2022), and third place for Young Journalist of the Year (Jacob Hayden).

Farmers reminded to look up and live
ENERGEX is asking everyone on the land to look up and live.
On average, every six days, somewhere in Queensland, farm machinery hits powerlines.
Energex area manager Matt Oar said most of these contacts were with high voltage overhead powerlines.
“There has been a surge in the number of contacts made by tractors – they’ve more than doubled, from six in 2021 to 16 last year,” he said.
“We want everyone to stay focused and stay safe.”
Mr Oar said people can be so focused on the task at hand they do not see the inherent dangers.
“It just takes a momentary lapse in concentration and suddenly, you’re facing the risk of electrocution, so it’s important to take the time to assess the area you’re working in,” he said.
“There’s been a very slight reduction in agriculture equipment contacting powerlines year-on-year, from 61 in 2021 to 57 in the past 12
months, and while it’s good to see any reduction, having dangerous events happening weekly is not cause for celebration, and we should all be
extremely concerned.”
Mr Oar said spinning powerline markers were a vibrant reminder to look up and live.
“They’re a great visual
indicator of powerlines in you’re spraying, cropping, harvesting or loading”, he said.
If you are involved in an incident that brings down powerlines, stay in the vehicle, call 000 and wait for help.

Five years on from university studies at the University of Queensland’s Gatton campus, Mr Burley is continuing his undergrad uate degree while thriving as a Lead Academic Tutor in Anatomy and Physiology.
“I’d never performed well academically, and really didn’t know if studying at a uni was really right for me, but I was surprised at how well UQ was able to support me in my studies,” he said.

While undertaking an industry placement course at Hidden Vale Wildlife Centre

“Throughout all of these trials and tribulations, Dr Narayan still encouraged me, accommodated me, and for advancement within his team,” he said.
Mr Burley is proud to now be educating the next generation.
“I’m now an integral part of the Anatomy and Physiol ogy content each semester, with roles that vary from leading practical labs, to creating and running tutorial content, to designing exam ination content,” he said.

GATTON HAWKS
Gatton 38 d. Souths 14
Gatton asserted themselves at the top of the TRL ladder with a good win over Souths Tigers at Gold Park on Sunday afternoon. It was with the Hawks getting to a 20-0 lead after 30 minutes through nice tries from Tyrell Woodley (2) and Sione Foueti. Both players were excellent as they took their opportunities when presented.
The turning point was just before half time when Souths were very close to scoring on Gatton’s line with two minutes left in the half only to fumble the ball near the line. The Hawks scored through Dom Pincomb just seconds before the break to lead 26-4.
Souths were a lot better in the
second half. Young winger Alister Cameron grabbed a second half double but Gatton closed the match out 38-14 in a polished display.
Foueti and Woodley were very good as was Captain Haydan Lipp whilst Shannon Hicks enjoyed his injury layoff.
Cooper Howlett played well for the try whilst centre Anisi Finau tried hard all game.
Gatton now face fellow competition leaders Warwick in a blockbuster at Gatton next weekend. Whilst Souths travel to GoondiwinGatton 38 (Tyrell Woodley 3, Sione Foueti, Dom Pincomb, Luke Self, Blake Appo tries Haydan Lipp 3 goals) defeated Souths 14 (Alister Cameron 2, Cooper Howlett tries Ben Cook goal)
