Fantasy obsession fill’s Hypatia’s House LAIDLEY fantasy lovers converged at Hypatia’s House in Laidley for the opening night of Flights of Fantasy, exhibiting the artwork of Raceview’s Levi Huston and the extensive book and artwork collection of Laidley Height’s Simon Doonar. Mr Doonar’s collection of books is the result of 20 years of obsession “Me and books don’t have a very good history

because I’m dyslexic… I look at every single book I read as an accomplishment,” he said. “Then I obsess about it by finding the best quality book I could of that story and having it signed, preferably by the artist and by the author. “I fell in love with the cover art Geoff Taylor was doing for the books, it was the art that got me interested in the book itself.”

The exhibition also has 18 of Geoff Taylor’s pieces, some commissioned by Mr Doonar. Self-taught artist Levi Huston drew inspiration from mythology, maths and sciences in his own work at the exhibition. “I blend in certain sciences like fractals and surrealism,” he said. Flights of Fantasy is open until December 22. JACOB HAYDEN

Churches deliver emergency relief

BY JESSE HAMILTON

CHURCHES from across the Somerset region have united to offer support packages for those in need of food and emergency relief through the help of volunteers and donations. St Mary’s Anglican Church Kilcoy priest in charge Reverend Jilleen Chambers said the church received funding from the Mayoral Gala Charity Ball, allowing a more consistent service for those in need. “We were doing food relief before but now we have a more structured system from Thursdays from 9am to 12pm at the church and by appointment,” she said. “We have a hamper that includes pasta, muesli bars, breakfasts, toothbrushes, and dishwashing liquids.” Anglican Parish of Brisbane Valley Reverend Loretta Tyler-Moss said volunteers would be handing out emergency relief packages weekly

from December 6. “Volunteers from each of the churches will be manning the food bank and we’re

using community donations to fund the packages with financial support from local organisations,” she said.

>> SRC BRIEFS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY SOMERSET Regional Council (SRC) has released the first annual scorecard review of their economic development strategy, The Next Horizon, which outlines progress made on key strategies and actions to grow Somerset’s economy. The strategy focusses on three key approaches to drive growth, including marketing and promoting the region, planning, and facilitating change.

ANIMAL MANAGEMENT SRC have completed a review and proposed changes to their animal management subordinate local laws to better meet the needs and expectations of the community. The recommended amendments were endorsed in council’s ordinary meeting on November 29 and have been designed to align with surrounding LGAs. COMMUNITY EVENTS FUNDING BOOST

SRC will provide funding to three community organisations. Council endorsed recommendations to provide financial and in-kind support to events organised by the Lions Club of Esk, the Kilcoy Race Club and the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail Users’ Association. Community celebrates its volunteers BY JESSE HAMILTON

THE Laidley Pioneer Village hosted a celebration lunch to honour Lockyer’s selfless volunteering heroes on December 2. The get-together lunch was designed to appreciate the numerous ways in which volunteers donate their time within the community. Laidley District Historical Society committee member Carl Foster said volunteers do not often get the opportunity to band together and be thanked by their community. “Sometimes you don’t feel as though you get recognised in the public as a volunteer,” he said.

Blenheim Rural Fire Brigade firefighters Paul and Denise Davey have been volunteers with the brigade for eight years.

“This is an open invitation for the public to come and say thank you, and for volunteers and their families to get together and mingle.”

Volunteers from all backgrounds, from state emergency personnel to those who give their time to the historical village, attended.

Drive safe this Christmas break WITH school holidays underway over the country, Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz has urged road users to be vigilant and stay safe this break. School holidays are a great time of year to take a break and spend time with friends and family. It is important for all road users to play their role in promoting road safety and getting to their destinations safely.

“For drivers it is particularly important to take responsibility for ourselves and our passengers, which includes driving to the conditions, planning ahead and minimising distractions in the vehicle,” Mr Buchholz said. “Fatigue is one of the leading factors contributing to road crashes, causing death and serious injury. “So, remember to stop, revive, and survive.”

Mr Buchholz said all motorists need to pay attention to road signage and speed limits, and to keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists. “Playgrounds, parks, and local venues will be busy with families these holidays, so stay vigilant when driving past those areas, and stop at pedestrian crossings,” he said. “I wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Support community through Christmas charity drives BY GRACE CRICHTON

AS THE season of giving approaches, your donations can go a long way toward helping a neighbour this Christmas. Several community organisation, charities, and not-for-profits are supporting the community through Christmas Drives. Laidley Community Centre is seeking non-perishable food items, gifts and toys, and cash donations for their

hampers and pantry. Manager Alanah Wahl said families in need receive a hamper with Christmas food and can choose presents from their Christmas shop. “It’s really aimed at families where if they didn’t have the opportunity to access the Christmas Hamper, there wouldn’t be the same level of cheer and joy on Christmas,” she said. Donations can be made at Community Grounds Café, the Mary Street centre, or

online. New Season’s Church has once again partnered with LJ Hooker Esk Toogoolawah for their Christmas Hamper Charity Drive. Pastor Debra Millerick said they would welcome donations of items which would help people who are finding it a bit tough financially this Christmas. “Non-perishable food items that you would like on your Christmas table, things that are going to be a bless-

ing to people at Christmas when they don’t have those extra things on the table,” she said. They are also accepting vouchers from the local IGAs and donations can be dropped off at LJ Hooker Esk, Every Season Hair Design, or New Season’s Church on Sunday mornings. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal aims to raise $25 million nationally. Salvation Army public relations secretary for

Queensland Simon Gregory said there were many ways to partner with The Salvos this Christmas, including lending a hand, donating products such as gifts and food, or a financial donation. “It is more important than ever to band together as a community and lend a hand to those doing it tough,” he said. To donate, or if you need support, visit salvationarmy. org.au or call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58).

Vehicle incident, Hatton Vale; Gregors Creek fire; traffic safety INCREASED PATROL OVER CHRISTMAS WITH the school holidays and festive season upon us, police are urging drivers to be vigilant and exercise caution.

Increased traffic enforcement and high visibility police patrols are planned in all areas of Queensland. SINGLE-VEHICLE ROLLOVER HATTON VALE Paramedics responded to

the Warrego Highway eastbound on December 2 for a single-vehicle rollover. A male was treated for head, leg and suspected spinal injuries and transported stable to Princess

Alexandra Hospital. GREGORS CREEK VEGETATION FIRE Police and Emergency services attended a vegetation fire near Pohlmans Range Rd Gregors Creek on

November 30. Fire services were required to take action to protect infrastructure and a dwelling in the area. Investigations continue. QAS and QPS MEDIA

CULTURAL CENTRE TEMPORARY CLOSURE FOLLOWING last month’s severe hail storm, parts of the Laidley Cultural Centre will be closed for a minimum of three months while insurance assessments and repairs are undertaken. A MARBURG couple were recognised in October for their love of, and outstanding service to, the rose. Bevan and Shirley Dance travelled to Perth for the National Rose Show on October 21, where Shirley was awarded the Australian Rose Award. “I didn’t know anything about it,” Shirley said. “The committees from the different states will nominate a person, so this year the Queensland Rose Society nominated me, unbeknownst to me.” “She couldn’t talk, and that’s unusual for Shirley,” Bevan said. The Dances have grown roses together for their 40

years of marriage, been part of the Queensland Rose Society for 20 years, and Bevan served as secretary for 10 years. “Bevan’s mum grew roses, my mum and my grandma grew roses, so we both grew up involved with roses,” Shirley said. “Bevan will tell you he’s been watering roses since he was five.” While Shirley was the recipient, she said both her and Bevan were deserving. “[The award] says ‘the promotion of knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment of the rose to the Australian public’, and we do that together,” Shirley said. “Really, it should be a joint award because Bevan and I do the rose talks together.”

The Dances have two presentations, ‘Successful Rose Growing’ and ‘Roses That We Grow’, which they bring to garden clubs across southeast Queensland. Bevan said Shirley initially kept quiet about the award. “She didn’t want to tell anyone… I told a couple of friends and got into a hell of a lot of trouble,” Bevan said. “You don’t do it for recognition, but... I’m quite humbled by the fact they did nominate me,” Shirley said. Shirley often writes for The Australian Rose Annual and the The Queensland Rose, and as members of the National Rose Society of Australia they have attended several World Rose Conventions including China, Copenhagen and Adelaide.

Fire ant treatment is safe Advertorial

Fire ants pose a greater risk to humans, animals the environment and Australia’s economy than eradication treatment itself While only 2–6 mm in size, fire ants can have irreversible consequences on Australia and cost our economy up to $2 billion per year, forever. Fire ants are a category 1 restricted matter (Biosecurity Act 2014) with the ability to: • destroy crops • damage machinery and electrical equipment • render parks, paddocks, playgrounds and backyards unusable. The product being used to eradicate this invasive pest from Australia contains the exact same active ingredients as household pest control treatments but at a significantly lower concentration. Fire ant treatment is not a poison. It is: • safe for humans and animals • tried, tested and approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority. The National Fire Ant Eradication Program has a challenging but important job to do, and we are intensifying program-led and community treatment. Eradication activities are underway in parts of the Southern Downs, Scenic Rim, southern Gold Coast and Lockyer Valley local government areas.

Eradication treatment is the only proven way to eliminate fire ants and protect the way of life we know and love. It is our one option to safeguard Australia. Overseas, where fire ant populations are much higher than here, communities have been forced to change their lifestyle to avoid exposure to fire ants. Fire ant expert and entomologist Dr Ross Wylie says we are eradicating fire ants using the best available methods internationally. “Eradication involves treating targeted areas multiple times, over several years with an insect growth regulator. We can’t just treat once or twice, we need to keep coming back and use a systematic approach,” says Dr Wylie. “We need to treat 100% of all targeted properties, whether fire ants are visible or not.”

Treatment is delivered between September and June using aerial, utility terrain vehicles and handheld spreaders. “The treatment we use consists of small pieces of corn grit soaked in soybean oil which contains a low concentration of insect growth regulator.

It essentially acts as ‘the pill’ for ants, preventing the fire ant queen from reproducing workers. If she can’t replenish her workforce, she and the colony will eventually die,” says Dr Wylie. The product contains pyriproxyfen, which is registered for use with: • horticultural crops—for treating whiteflies and scale insects • animal flea collars • fly control spray • pest and parasite management for horses and cattle. Fire ant eradication treatment contains minimal insecticide. With 5 g of insecticide within each kg, the active ingredient equates to only 0.5% of the total product. This means for a: • 500 m² block, just 100 g of product would be applied containing only ½ g of the active ingredient. • 10 ac (4 ha) property, 8 kg of product would be applied containing only 40 g of insecticide. This ensures minimal impact on flora and fauna and little chance for animals to source enough of the product to negatively affect their health.

An animal, say a horse, would need to consume every single granule sprinkled on a 3,333 m² property to be impacted by the treatment. On limited occasions when treating near waterways we use a product containing S-methoprene. This is to protect aquatic life, as it has been shown to have a lower effect on aquatic animals.

The presence of fire ants in our environment is a much greater risk to local wildlife, pets and farm animals than the treatment itself. By following the product application guidelines and permit requirements, we can eradicate fire ants whilst protecting the people and animals in our treatment areas. It is vital we treat every targeted property, whether you see fire ants or not. Just one missed nest can jeopardise national eradication efforts. Eradication is only possible if all levels of government, industry and the community work together. Visit fireants.org.au or call 13 25 23 for more information.

FIRE ANTS HAVE OTHER PLANS FOR YOUR YARD Help us treat your property

Our officers will treat 100% of all targeted properties up to 3 times between now and June next year. When they do, you must provide them with access. Just one missed nest will jeopardise eradication efforts. To learn more about our treatment activities, scan the QR code, visit fireants.org.au or call 13 25 23.

Crafters bring Christmas cheer to oncology unit A GROUP of kind and creative ladies have banded together to bring some Christmas cheer to Ipswich Hospital’s oncology unit. On Wednesday November 29, four members of the Lady Cilento Crafters travelled to Ipswich Hospital to deliver gift bags to patients undergoing chemotherapy. Organiser Coralie Bradley raised funds for the crafters through her stall at the Big Orange in Forest Hill. “It was nice of the patients who received gifts last year to call in to the Big Orange who bought things to support this year’s bags,” she said. Patients were gifted with lip balm, lollies, jar openers, note pads, tea and coffee sachets, tissue holders, hand-made pens courtesy of the Rosewood Men’s Shed, Limelight Cinemas vouchers and hand-crafted Christmas

cards to gift to loved ones. Shandelle Chant was a former patient at Ipswich Hospital and received a gift from the crafters las year. “Receiving a gift from these ladies was unexpected, and some of the things in there were quite cheerful,” Mrs Chant said.

While doing chemotherapy, Mrs Chant completed 26 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles. “It would distract me from thinking about how I was feeling due to the chemo, or if I couldn’t sleep at night,” she said. “When I was starting to declutter my home of the can-

cer-associated items I thought ‘what am I going to do with these jigsaw puzzles?’. “I saw Coralie’s post about the stall they had to raise money and thought I’d donate them to the stall, and then they money they raise goes back to something I can relate to.”

PRENZLAU State School students had an inside look at state politics on an excursion to Parliament House in November. Principal Jo Odorici said 29 Year 3-6 students went on the trip. Students had a tour and participated in a mock parliament. “They were debating about homework,” Mrs Odorici said. “They really got into the ‘shame shame’ and the ‘hear hear’ when they were debating it, it was really quite funny.”

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald came by to say hello. “I am not able to attend all visits, but I am honoured to be able to host some schools and answer questions about our state’s parliamentary processes,” he said. Mrs Odorici said it was important the future leaders know how they can enact change. “They’re our politicians of the future aren’t they, so it’s important for them to learn about how laws are made.”

Waste Matters DECEMBER 2023 EDITION

WE WANT YOUR VIEWS ON WASTE Council is encouraging community members to share their views, values and attitudes around waste management. Council is in the process of preparing the region’s new Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan and Lockyer Valley Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Councillor for Waste, Cr Jason Cook said the community’s feedback would play a vital role in ensuring the Plan meets community needs into the future. “We’re seeking community feedback to help align the new Plan with existing and emerging values and preferences in reducing waste and maximising resource recovery. “It is vital this Plan meets the needs of the community into the future, which is why we’re encouraging residents to have their say. “This phase of engagement is not intended to focus on specific locations, prices or frequencies of possible waste management sites, services and approaches. “Rather, it is focused on understanding views, values and attitudes of our community around waste. “The next phase of engagement will involve the presentation of the Draft Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan, which will be informed by the results of this survey,” Cr Cook said. THE COMMUNITY Bank Lowood – Fernvale has been established in the Somerset community for the last 14 years and over that time it has invested $1.4 million back into the local community. Community Bank chairman Aaron Heck said the bank could do so because the

community believed in their little bank. The one thing the bank had not done in the last 14 years was refresh the branch, and Mr Heck said it was time to give the branch a much-needed face lift. “We are here to stay and to show our community that we

are investing in our branch to ensure the longevity of our services, we have not only updated the look of our branch, but we have also updated the technology within,” Mr Heck said. “Our team are well equipped to provide our community with banking services

that you cannot get anywhere else in the Somerset.” Customers who attended the reopening said the look and feel of the new branch reflects its long-term investment in the community. As a community bank, they have a franchise agreement with Bendigo Bank, ensuring

a 50/50 profit share with the income from the products and services sold on behalf of Bendigo and those profits pay for the expenses associated with the branch. The bank can decide on the remaining profit to be shared with the community by the provision of grants

and sponsorship, ensuring the community benefits from the bank’s success. With the support of customers and shareholders, Mr Heck said the bank was here to stay. Call the branch today and find out how they can help you with your banking needs.

Joshua and Brianna Steinhardt both went to Laidley Kindergarten as kids, and now their children Olivia and Samson attend the centre.

Laidley Kindergarten’s original staff, Norma Parker, Jo Baulsch, Marie Hauser, Coral Anderson, and Barbara Buchanan at the kindy’s 50th celebrations.

Kindy standing tall after 50 years LAIDLEY Kindergarten celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday November 18. Current and past families came to the William St kindy for the festivities and to see the 10- and 20-year time capsules opened. Director Kelly Simpson said the event celebrated the kindergarten community. “The past families and current families coming together is really what we’re celebrat-

ing today,” she said. “We’ve got so much history, so much memory, and bringing it all together in one place for us to celebrate is what today’s all about.” Founding members shared memories of purchasing the former Presbyterian church for $1,500 in 1973. Each time Laidley flooded, the community banded together to get the kindy back on its feet.

“We’re bigger than just the kindergarten, it is a community and that’s how we operate,” Ms Simpson said. Former kindy-goers, now in their teens and twenties, came to see their contribution to the time capsules. Toys, photos, letters, and catalogues were revealed, alongside the children’s wishes for their future careers. The kindy has began a new time capsule.

Show Society president Don Noble said Robert’s family had a four-generation long history of involvement in the society. “He became involved as a schoolboy exhibitor and joined the Show Society in 1964 where he has worked in many ways, some of which include vice president, minutes secretary, and president from 2006 to 2017,” Mr Noble said. “In 1970 he was elected one of the trustees of the grounds and later became the secretary-treasurer of that body until it ceased.” For years, Robert was also chief photography steward and chief dairy cattle steward, and as an earlier

BLACKALL SALEYARDS Thursday November 30 A total of 3,900 head were yarded for the Blackall November weaner and store sale. A large portion of the cattle yarded were drawn from the North West of the state and quality was mixed. While prices lifted significantly across the board compared to the last sale, Bos Indicus content and quality did impact averages on young cattle, and buyers were still chasing the heavier weaned pens. Good quality runs of heavy feeder steers sold to solid demand from southern Queensland and restockers were active on quality medium weight heifers. Local light weight restocker steers sold to 382.2c with most around 347c, steers 280 to 330kg made to 358.2c averaging 343c/kg. Medium weight steers returning to the paddock topped at 350.2c and those to feed made to 354c/kg. Heavy feeder steers sold to 346.2c to average 338c/kg. The return of southern Queensland restockers helped improve prices for flat back heifers with the top pen of British cross heifers 280 to 330kg selling to 314.2c to average 290c/kg and feeders paid up to 310.2c for medium weight heifers to average 250c/kg. A run of heavy weight heifers to the processor topped at 260.2c with most selling around 239c, medium weight cows made to 202.2c averaging 191c and good heavy cows made to 215c to average 209c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to 236c/kg. DALBY SALEYARDS Wednesday November 29 Good falls of rain over the supply area had no effect on cattle numbers at Dalby as producers took advantage of recent price improvements. The number of stock penned lifted by 2,280 head to 4,003. A full panel of export buyers was present and similar to the previous week not all were operating. The regular feed and trade plus restocker buyers were in attendance and active. The market responded to the rain with light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock lifting in price by over 70c/kg. Yearling steers and heifers to feed improved by 40c to 50c/kg. Bullocks to export processors averaged 17c/kg better. Medium weight plain condition cows to restockers averaged 19c/kg dearer. However heavy weight cows to export processors could not maintain the improved levels of the previous week and averaged 8c to 10c/kg less. Light weight yearling steers under 200kg made to 440c while the under 280kg lines made to 430c to average 390c/kg. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged from 340c to 366c with sales to 392c/

kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to an isolated 342c to average 320c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock made to 332c with a good sample at 297c/ kg. Tucson boasts proven track record THE NEW Hyundai Tucson is showcasing a more dynamic appearance that embodies the company’s progressive vision for futurity. It is set to make its European debut in early 2024, accompanied by the unveiling of its European specifications in the near future. As the Tucson embarks on a new chapter in its European journey, it carries with it the promise of continued excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction. The new Tucson inherits the essence of the current model’s ‘Parametric Dynamics’ design language while evolving with a more refined and compelling aesthetic. The front fascia features a bold interplay of thin, angular lines in the radiator grille, complemented by Parametric Jewel Hidden Lights. The bumper and skid plates

In pursuit of automotive excellence, the Hyundai Tucson emerges as a trustworthy companion, purposefully designed and meticulously crafted with the customer at its core.

extend seamlessly from side to side, creating a dynamic and visually wider stance. At the rear, the skid

plates are integrated into the bumper moulding and enlarged horizontally, reinforcing the impression of a wider

wheelbase. The sleek, rigid form of the rear end seamlessly echoes the front, conveying a sense

of stability and balance. The interior of the new Tucson prioritises spaciousness and practicality,

achieved through a horizontal design that creates a sense of openness. Two decades ago, the model entered an emerging SUV segment and has since evolved into a global bestseller. Its unwavering popularity among European customers is unmistakable. According to global automotive market research company JATO Dynamics, Tucson became the best-selling car in the compact SUV segment in Europe in 2022. With its refined design, advanced technology, and proven track record of success, the new Tucson is also poised to continue as a global leader in the SUV segment. The new Tucson is the first partial redesign in three years to enhance the product competitiveness of the fourth-generation Tucson.

THE LOCKYER AND SOMERSET INDEPENDENT

MOORE WEEKLY STARS December 4-10, 2023 ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

With the Sun and Mars shining in fellow fire sign Sagittarius, you’re in Ram freedom-bunny mode! Plus, indulgent Venus and restless Jupiter rev up your adventurous, extravagant side. So this week will work best if you experiment and explore, stretch well beyond your comfort zone, and fraternise with a stimulating crowd. But you could receive unsettling information about a friend or financial matter. Do some stringent fact checking and be extra patient.

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20) This week’s stars highlight the constant balancing act between individual needs and relationship responsibilities. Jupiter and Uranus (both in Taurus) emphasise the importance of maintaining your individuality and prioritising personal projects. Whereas Venus (your ruling planet) shines a bright spotlight on your partner, relatives and/or friends. Are you meeting their needs, as well as your own? Tuesday and Wednesday are terrific for socialising. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

The Sun and Mars are both transiting through your relationship zone, so a problem with a loved one should start to improve, as long as you are proactive about finding a solution. When it comes to your aspirations for the future, don’t just dream about them. You need a practical plan (and the cooperation of others) to turn abstract dreams into robust reality. The late week stars highlight travelling, teaching, studying, intense conversation and inner contemplation.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Attached Crabs – this week’s stars are perfect for cementing your commitment to your partner, as you find extra romantic ways to show your affection. Singles – give superficial suitors a wide berth. Look for lasting love with a soulful Scorpio or a charismatic Capricorn. And – with the Sun and Mars in your wellbeing zone – don’t just talk about improving your fitness levels. Be proactive, jump off the comfy couch and get physical in the great outdoors! LEO (July 23 - Aug 22) The focus is on friends, as the Sun and Mars move through your friendship zone. But don’t let your peer group influence you too much. The planets encourage being your own person and doing your own thing. So your motto for the week is from birthday great, singer-songwriter Jim Morrison: “A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.” Creativity is high on Friday, but don’t let your tendency to gossip come between you and others. VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

This week Mercury (your power planet) forms a fabulous trine with lucky, plucky Jupiter. Plus, Jupiter and Uranus are both jumping through your aspirations and adventure zones. So you need to be more proactive and courageous about turning current average opportunities into future good fortune. Where intention flows, energy goes! Your inspiring motto for the moment is from birthday great, poet Emily Dickinson: “Fortune befriends the bold.”

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22) On Tuesday and Wednesday, taskmaster Saturn links up with your ruling planet Venus. Which encourages and boosts your conscientious, perfectionist side. But don’t overdo it, Libra! Leave room for mistakes, stumbles and occasional sloppiness. No one can get things 100% right all the time. Wisdom for the week comes from birthday great, actress Dame Judi Dench: “I think you should take your job seriously, but not yourself – that is the best combination.”

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Mercury and Pluto (your patron planet) are transiting through your communication zone. So you’re keen to enjoy plenty of stimulating conversations with a wide range of interesting, adventurous people within your extended peer group. It’s a wonderful week for flashes of inspiration as you fraternise with local, interstate and/or international friends. The Venus-Saturn trine will help you sort out your priorities and face relationship responsibilities with a smile. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

The Sun and Mars are visiting your sign (plus Mercury and Venus link up with Jupiter) so you’re in adventurous, freedom-loving mode. Limiting rules, regulations and restrictions won’t be welcome! But slow down, Sagittarius, otherwise you could be involved in an argument or accident. Inspiring quote is from singer-songwriter Jim Morrison (who was born on December 8, 1943): “The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are.”

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) On Tuesday and Wednesday, Venus makes a lovely link with your power planet Saturn, which favours financial matters, established relationships and finding long-term love. Then Friday’s Mercury/Jupiter trine is particularly good for business, travel, education, conversation and curiosity. Your mantra for the moment is from birthday great Walt Disney: “We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things because we’re curious.” AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18) Courageous Mars and the creative Sun are currently transiting through your hopes-andwishes zone. So it’s important to dream a dream, turn it into a goal, and then make it happen. No procrastinating or complaining, Aquarius! Your motto for the moment is from birthday great Walt Disney (who was born on December 5, 1901): “All your dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.” Friday is fabulous for catching up with family and friends. PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20) The more creative and proactive you are at work, school or college, the better the week will be. And the more you help others, the more connected you’ll feel. With Mercury moving through your networking zone, it’s also time to boost your social media profile by communicating with more family, friends, colleagues, clients and/or customers. You have the ability to influence people in positive ways, as you employ encouragement and praise to get others onside. COPYRIGHT Joanne Madeline Moore 2023

In Memoriam

I wish to thank everyone for the extraordinary kindness shown to me since the death of my beloved husband, Roger Parker (3/7/1936–8/12/2022). The food, fixing, friendship, flowers, and incredible emotional support have been greatly appreciated. A special thanks to my four wonderful children, Suzanne, Andrew, Louise and Colette, and their families – including 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren so far! – and to my extended family overseas, who have all helped ease my grief.

Roger: thank you for the life we shared. I will always love you. Bridget Parker

Helidon continued their good form, putting down a winnable 179 against Mulgowie. Great to see Brandon Webb back in action with 29, supported by Mark Ashley on 45. Shane Lehman did well with 3-35. In reply Dean Granzien again stood out with 42 and briefly had the Mulgas in the hunt. Jackson Green-Smith continued his streak with 4-25. Helidon are clearly a top three candidate. VALLEY VIKINGS In a huge disappointment for the local derby against Laidley, which promised fireworks, the game was washed out. in an uplifting gesture, three Ipswich Hor-

nets players participated in the Vikings training session. The final game before Xmas is a two day game against ladder leader, Centrals. Two washouts have hampered the Vikings momentum. Somerset Regional Councillors discussed feedback of the Fernvale Sports Park Master Plan in their ordinary meeting on November 29. PHOTO: SOMERSET REGIONAL COUNCIL

Community has their say on Fernvale Sports Park plans BY JESSE HAMILTON

STAKEHOLDER and public opinion were at the forefront of consideration as Somerset Regional Council adopted the final draft of the Fernvale Sports Park Master Plan on November 29. The facility has grown significantly since 2016, prompting council to set up an advisory committee in

conjunction with stakeholders on the centre’s long-term demands. The master plan was also available for community feedback via a ‘Have Your Say’ survey from July 3-28. Somerset Regional Councillor Jason Wendt said the final draft plan strikes a good balance of what is needed in the area. “I think as a council, we’ve

tried to be mindful of the other facilities we have in the area, we’re not trying to replicate,” he said. “We’re trying to add to our current facilities, so there’s an offer for everything.” Brisbane Valley Rattlers AFC president Graham Smith, a stakeholder of the facility, said the sports centre could operate as a multifunctional space for the commu-

nity. “The most important thing is that we’re community-minded with this facility,” he said. “There’s a lot of space for community functions as well, it’s not just sporting clubs that are going to benefit. “I believe the whole community will benefit from the growth of new developments.”

Golf Day fundraiser for Santa on the Fire Truck FROM PAGE 44 players. “104 players at a charity event is a record,” she said. “Over $4,000 is an awesome injection of funds that will benefit the whole community.” The club has supported Santa on the Fire Truck for several years. “It’s about people volunteering hours to raise the dollars so that those

things can happen for the community because a whole lot of people come together for Christmas,” Mrs Toohey said. “It’s about belonging.” The day was supported by sponsors PRD Bremer Valley, Spicers Hidden Vale, The Rosewood Hotel, Neale Young Plumbing Drainage, Walloon Hotel, Golf Nuts Queensland, and Ipswich City Bearings.

Plainland Knights finish first season on high with two finalist teams

LOCKYER Valley Basketball Association’s Plainland Knights’ three boys teams held their own in their first season with the Ipswich Basketball Association.

The Under 16s and Under 14s both competed in Division 4, placing second in close games. Under 18s coach Nick Elvidge said his team initially

competed in Division 4. “The first game we played wasn’t great but wasn’t bad, we were testing the waters,” Elvidge said. After a strong perfor-

mance the team were boosted Division 2. “That’s where the boys should have been from the get-go, 100%,” Elvidge said. “We versed some of the

harder teams in Div 2 and held our own, and the boys did very well and went on to a three-game win streak.” The U18s went on to the semi-finals, coming 4th

overall. “The boys came to training on Mondays and put in the maximum amount of effort,” Elvidge said. JACOB HAYDEN

CHARITY GOLF DAY HELPS BRING SANTA TO TOWN BY GRACE CRICHTON

SANTA will take to the streets of Rosewood and Thagoona thanks to the generous support of locals and the Rosewood Golf Club. Rosewood hosted a charity golf day in conjunction with the Social Players Challenge on November 26 with a portion of registration fees going towards Santa on the Fire Truck. Rosewood Lions donated a generous $1,700 and the club raised $2,305. On Christmas Eve, Santa will join the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services team at Rosewood

station and visit every street to spread some holiday cheer. Firefighter Fleur Noll said the money raised from the golf day helps them buy supplies for the run. “It’s all through Rosewood and Thagoona, we dress the trucks up with Christmas decorations and give kids lollies,” she said. “We usually leave the station about 3 o’clock and go from there, every street in Thagoona and Rosewood.” Rosewood Golf Club community resources and development member Rosemary Toohey said the club had a record number of CONTINUES PAGE 43
