Why change now?

I AM writing in relation to the referendum on the Aboriginal Voice to Parliament.

How can it be we need to change our constitution to give a voice to Parliament when there is no treaty has been a voice in parliament.

also have eight senators and three in the house of representatives in July

AFTER reading last week’s letters, I felt compelled to respond to Desley Daley’s piece about the upcoming referendum. Whatever Ms Daley’s legal credentials happen to be, they clearly have little to do with Constitu-tions and concerns regarding the ‘Voice to Parliament’ aside, her understanding of the purpose and process of a referendum is inaccurate in several areas. To set the scene, the Constitution is not some omnipotent document carved in stone by God. It can be, should be and has been, updated from time to time, to continue to be relevant. Our vehicle for that change is a Referendum, which if it is to be successful, must meet a number of stringent criteria.

In practice, an amendment to the Constitution is proposed and voted upon by those community members -

tive result does not give the Prime Minister of the day the authority to change anything other than the proposed amendment. In fact, the government of the day is obligated to legislate the amendment in accorof Australia.

Exactly why Ms Daley believes a ‘Yes’ vote would give politicians permission to make additional constitutional reforms without proper authority, is perplexing. Instead of quoting non-existent points of law, she would do well to have a grain of faith in a process and system that sets Australia aside from most other countries. Her recent letter appears to be aimed at what she believes to rather than her opinion regarding the system is destructive and helps no one.

To put Ms Daley’s mind at rest, the wording of the proposed amendment to the Constitution is already available and can be found via a simple internet search. Arguments for the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ cases will be presented in a number of formats, including a printed pamphlet and most certainly by media ads and announcements. We will all know exactly what change is being proposed as well as for and against considerations. With that

week we had an opinion letter from an opponent to the Voice referendum explaining why he’s voting divisive misinformation being promoted about The Voice referendum when it should be something to celebrate.

I wasn’t born an Australian. I chose to become one because when I saw how my community banded together to support each other during the pride and respect for the decency and mateship of Australian people.

I’m proud to be an Australian. As a nation we have much to celebrate, -

Australia’s Constitution is 122 years old, and still doesn’t recognise Indigenous Australians who have been here for over 60,000 years.

that with a referendum that will give Indigenous Australians a real say in their future.

First Nations people themselves have asked for that recognition to be through something very practical and simple: a Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Australian Constitution, which means having a say in matters that affect their lives and communities.

that First Nation people experience in our community? Possibly not, but the advice, experience, and wisdom from people in community can lead to better policy outcomes and that can only be a good thing.

When you think about it, it’s really not such a big deal, no-one is going to be disadvantaged.

We will be voting to insert a simple change into the Constitution.

The Voice is an opportunity to bring our nation together. We’re having this referendum because it’s time forognised in our Constitution.

As a nation we’re being asked to make a simple change to our Constitution. Is that such a big deal?

It’s a simple question with a simple answer.

I will be voting Yes.

Flood recovery prioritised in Lockyer Valley budget

LOCKYER Valley Regional Council’s 2023-2024

recovery capital works while keeping rate increases below CPI and delivering a modest surplus.

The $127.22M budget was handed down on Wednesday June 28.

Council continues to apply the three-year average land valuation method to rate increases it adopted last year to avoid sudden rate hikes.

Owner-occupier residential rates will increase by 4.73 per cent on average and the average farm category rates will increase by 4.32 per cent, both of which are below CPI of 7 per cent and are lower increases than some neighbouring local government areas.

Mayor Tanya Milligan said the budget showed a strong commitment from councillors to keep rates as low as possible while balancing community

responsibility.

“Council has demonstrated track record by consistently operating within its budget, keeping rate increases low, with an average annual increase of just 2.23 per cent in general residential rates over

the past four years against an average annual CPI of 4.15 per cent,” she said.

The capital works expenditure of $55.47M is largely dedicated to road, drainage and bridge related programs ($40.62M).

Flood recovery works projects clock in at $33M.

Council has set aside $5.71M for community facilities, $3.84M for waste facility upgrades, $1.34M for bridge upgrades and $757,000 for disaster management systems.

Last year, council paid down a total of $7.74M in borrowings and intend to

reduce the debt by a further $1.11M this year.

“By June 2025, our borrowings are expected to be less than $10M, down from $34.6M in June 2014,” Cr Milligan said.

The 2023-2024 Budget is expected to result in an operating surplus of $260,000.

Rock throwing incidents on Brisbane Valley Hwy

LOWOOD Police have warned that throwing rocks at moving vehicles can have fatal consequences after several cars have been damaged in Fernvale.

in Charge Senior Sergeant James Bromley said police have received several reports of vehicles damaged by rocks between May 25

and June 24 along the Brisbane Valley Highway around Fernvale.

“All the incidents allege a rock or similar object has been thrown at the front of the windscreen of vehicles,” S/Sgt Bromley said.

“These incidents are occurring along the Brisbane Valley highway in between Millar Road and Glamorgan Vale Rd.

“In all instances, damage was caused to the vehicles and this type of conduct is endangering lives.”

S/Sgt Bromely said police were investigating these reports of damage to the vehicles and have increased patrols in the area.

“Anyone who throws rocks at a vehicle in Queensland could face

up to two years imprisonment,” he said.

“I also encourage anyone that has had similar damage to their vehicle and not reported it to police to contact Policelink.”

Anyone with dash cam footage or information on these incidents is urged to come forward and contact Policelink on 131 444.

Bright Views Disability Services owner Terry Baker-bull said there needed to be more done to support those struggling in the Lockyer Valley.

“We just want to give back to the community more than anything,” he said.

“A lot of our participants are in the Lockyer Valley, there’s not enough NDIS suppliers here and not enough support workers.”

Mr Baker-bull said it is important for there to be functions and activities in place for those less fortunate to get them out in the community.

“We focus on our participants getting out rather

than staying home, so we do do crafting once a fortnight,”

he said.

Thagoona residents raise concern over 400 dwelling DA

A DEVELOPMENT appli-

cation for more than 400 dwellings over 36 hectares before Ipswich City Council (ICC) has several Thagoona residents concerned for the future of their Girral Road and Pindari Drive properties.

Residents said they were only made aware of the application on May 5, 2023 after noticing a sign placed at the top of Girral Road, with a June 16 deadline for submissions to ICC.

Direct neighbour to the site David Beaver said the application was lodged with ICC in December 2022, but with late notice he had to scramble to get his documents in order.

Small school with big family feel

HARLIN is a P-6 State School of 35 students.

Our AIP focus this year is on attendance, reading improvement, and use of collected data to drive our improvement in both teaching and learning.

We aim to make learning relevant to the lives of our students.

After a serious drought, our garden has been reinvigorated with the help of the wider community.

Thanks to a grant from CRT we are now moving towards permaculture, using a worm farm and compost tumbler to decrease our food and paper waste.

We hope to soon be cooking our produce when our Outdoor Learning Area is constructed, thanks to a Federal Government grant of $25,000.

A focus on many areas of the curriculum allows equity amongst our learners.

Students selected a sports house name and House Captains and set to eight weeks of training, before our school athletics day.

Dingoes won by a whisker after a muscle performance in the tug-o-war.

The Roos are hopping mad and eagerly await 2024.

Harlin has a strong instrumental focus this year with Mr Smith.

The band has made their

mance, which was striking for such a short amount of practise time.

The band aims to perform beyond our school and provide students with the experience of performing as a team, in front of unfamiliar audiences.

Year 5 and 6 representatives had a great day at Readers Cup.

The amount of reading supported our focus for the year and provided students with skills for comprehending texts, alongside their counterparts from many

other schools.

Being part of our community is an essential part of a small school.

We pay our respects and learn about our history when we participate in commemorative services.

We showed our appreciation of our mums and our grandmothers with our Mother’s Day Spa.

Planting over 100 trees supported our appreciation of koalas endemic to our area and we look forward to riding though Yimbin and seeing our trees growing and thriving.

Harlin State School is supported by a dynamic Parents and Citizens Association.

Anyone can nominate a business they believe stands out from the pack, whether it is exemplary customer service, a unique product goes above and beyond.

The business must be based in the Lockyer Valley to be nominated but can be in any industry and be of any size.

The four businesses to receive the most votes by the time nominations close on August 2 will be invited to the dinner where the winner will be announced.

Musician Steve Ainsworth will provide the night’s entertainment.

Golf life member still swinging strong at 95

THE LAIDLEY Golf Club celebrated one of its most cherished and long-standing members on June 21.

June Blaney, who turned 95 on June 11, commemorated the milestone with a lunch surrounded by friends and family at the Laidley clubhouse.

June has been a life member of the Laidley Golf Club since 1998.

Over the years she has served as club president, captain, vice-captain and volunteer caretaker.

June moved to Laidley from Tasmania and started playing social golf before transitioning to the competitive game in her 50s.

June said she still plays every Wednesday and Saturday and competes at tournaments.

She attributes walking as

one of the factors in staying

“I only just started riding in the cart, when I’m riding in the cart with somebody, I like to get out and walk across to my balls, I just like to use my legs,” she said.

Laidley Golf Club member

Cheryl Sternberg said June was an inspiration to all at the club for many years.

“She’s a motivation to us all, to still be playing at 95, we just admire her so much.”

Lockyer lops off locks

LOCKYER District High School staff and students went under the clippers to raise money and awareness for a cancer charity on June 23.

Five staff and sixteen students shaved their heads and raised $11,598 for Love Your Sister.

Year 11 student Jaymenly a new experience’ and year 9 student Thomas Mason said ‘it felt good to be part of a good cause’.

Staff jokingly admitted they were more than hap-

py to see the mullets go.

The school has also been raised money with ‘5c Friday’, crazy sock day, and hair colouring.

In total, the school has raised $12,031.75.

Teacher aide Monica Lavender said she shaved in support of her dad.

“It was amazing to see so many students and staff involved and showing support for one another,” she said.

“I think it always feels different to shave when you know someone who has been diagnosed.”

With free entry for primary school students ($10 for adults), and $10 wristbands for unlimited show rides, families can enjoy a cheap but exciting day out.

From 12-3pm Dino Encounters will have you and the kids screaming in terror and delight, and then motorsports group FMX Kaos Freestyle Team will keep the high-octane action going on Saturday night.

Poultry section returns with new chief steward

THE POULTRY section is back at the show this year, with new and exciting categories designed to encourage newcomers to bring in their birds.

Bree-Anna Hook will run as chief steward and has added two new categories that make for an exciting schedule.

“I’ve added a junior section to it, there never used to have a junior section,” she said.

“I’ve also added in a backyards bird section, if someone’s got a pet chicken that they think is beautiful, they can bring them along.”

Ms Hook got into showing

chooks a few years ago and said it was a good interest to have for anyone with birds.

“It’s a good interest, it gives kids a bit of responsibility, it’s not like a crazy

thing you have to work hard on you can just bring them in and enter,” she said.

Exploring exquisite new

THERE will be plenty of tastes to explore in the cookery and preserves, sweets, eggs and crazy critters sections at this year’s show, with a Mellow Yellow Flavours theme added across both sections.

Chief steward of the cookery section Nerida Blackmore said the chosen recipes include

lemon, orange, and apri-

“This year, we have introduced iced and decorated butter cakes,” she said.

“The Division B teenagers section also has some delicious recipes to follow in the schedule, including honey jumbles and apricot coconut slices.”

HORSE Archery Queensland

Lockyer Valley (HAQLV) riders will saddle up and draw their bows at their new home ground at Laidley for the 2023 Show.

Archer Kelly Jol said HAQLV would have a demonstration around 5pm on Saturday July 8.

“We’ll have some riders and they’ll demonstrate some of the horse archery skills, and people can meet some of the horses and see what we get up to,” Ms Jol said.

A new addition to the showcase is the tower demonstration, where riders will circle and shoot around a tower.

“It’s simulated from the old days of horse warfare,” Ms Jol said.

“We’ll be all dressed up… everybody has a different era that suits their horse, so mine is a Bedouin type archery with an Arabic costume.”

Other costumes include Mongolian, Indian and Scythian designs.

Ms Jol said it was exciting to put on a show at the HAQLV’s new home ground, the Laidley Showgrounds.

“This is our home grounds, they’re really well maintained grounds and we meet every third Saturday of the month and would welcome any Laidley locals that are interested in joining our ranks,” she said.

“We’ll be available to answer any questions for anyone that’s interested.”

RACERS from Atkins Glen Mower Speedway (AGMS) will convert Laidley Showgrounds into a speedway with three lawnmower race heats held on Saturday July 8.

AGMS representative Rod Willis said racers would bring in their own mowers and compete in an ongoing competition.

“We’ll be racing throughout the day in three heats, and with all those accumulative points we’ll do an A Saturday evening,” he said.

“We race for a driver’s championship throughout the Stanthorpe, Dalby, Millmer-

“We do those shows and then we’ve got our own racetrack at Grantham and race there six times through

the year.”

Mr Willis said the semi-serious group decorated their mowers to resemble race cars.

Elizabeth leaves a lasting legacy at Rosewood Show

THE ROSEWOOD Show Society cattle section hosted the inaugural Elizabeth Boughen Memorial Youth Challenge on Friday June 30, with ‘outstanding’ performances from the region’s young paraders and judges.

won the Youth Challenge, while Rosewood State High School took out the school competition.

Elizabeth’s father Noel Boughen judged herdsmanship, the third component of the challenge, and said the competition exceeded his expectations.

“The quality of kids and the quality of cattle is up there with anywhere, and that is dead-set true,” he said.

“Everyone has competed and presented themselves beautiful-

ly.”

Elizabeth Boughen was devoted to the stud beef section and performed alongside many of Friday’s competitors before she passed away in January 2023.

Mr Boughen said the competitors did Elizabeth proud.

“Most of them Lizzy has

grown up with, competed with, was friends with,” he said.

“They’ve done her family proud and these kids have done themselves and their families proud, and you can’t ask for any more than that.”

Young Paraders and Judges judge Michael O’Sullivan said

Rural Aid supports food education campaign

RURAL Aid has thrown its support behind a campaign to help Australians better understand where their food comes from.

Research commissioned by the National Farmers Federation (NFF) found that 51 per cent of the Australian population is extremely or very concerned about fresh food and grocery costs.

Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said while Australian farmers were world-renowned for the quality of their produce, closer to home many people were less familiar with how their food was grown.

“Our mission is to safeguard our farmers... before, during and after natural disasters, but we also aim to be a bridge that connects city and country,” he said.

the challenge was a great innovation of the Rosewood Show.

“I was very impressed with the champion judges in both sections in the way they were actively describing the animals and picking out the good and not so good things that were commercially relevant to the beef industry.”

NFF president Fiona Simson said recognising the value of food started with learning how much work farmers put into growing it.

“We want people to meet the farmers who are growing their food so the next time they’re in the supermarket, they think about where the bread they are buying might have come from,” he said.

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

July 3-9, 2023 ARIES

On Monday you’re keen to rush things and speak bluntly but don’t barge in with Full Moon guns blazing! If you do, then you could end up smackcially at work. It is a suitable week to tackle domestic and professional projects. Just make sure on exciting new ventures. With Venus and Mars visiting your love/creativity zone, you could fall in love with a person or an idea.

TAURUS

This week’s Full Moon activates your adventure and exploration zone. Plus Venus (your ruling planet) and Uranus (transiting through your sign) push you to jump out of your comfort zone, shake off bad habits, embrace opportunities and fast track changes.

Which can feel very uncomfortable! It’s time terrifying. Be inspired by birthday great The Dalai Lama (who turns 88 on Thursday) “True change is within.”

GEMINI

The Full Moon shines a spotlight on money, business, property, investments, taxes and joint order. On Friday, Mercury makes a fabulous aspect with Uranus, so an innovative -

sense of humour! Quote for the week is from birthday great, writer/artist Jean Cocteau “The ability to laugh heartily is the sign of a healthy soul.”

CANCER

Mercury and the Sun are both moving through your sign, which boosts your creativity … and relationship zone on Monday. So it’s time to look after loved ones, and nurture your inner self via meditation, contemplation and relaxation. Your quote for the week is from fellow Crab, actress Selena Gomez “I’m such a Cancer. I feel everything so intensely, which is one of my favourite things about myself.”

LEO

The Capricorn Full Moon highlights your health zone so it’s a good week to try a detox diet or a disciplined new exercise routine. Venus and Mars are both vamping through your sign, which boosts your Cat charisma and playful sense of fun. So it’s also a wonderful week to turn up the charm and call in a few old favours. However, too much happy hilarity (and no action) will just annoy others (who are doing all the work). So try to walk your talk.

VIRGO

Mercury and the Sun are in moody Cancer and there’s a Full Moon on Monday. So your obsessive/compulsive side could crank up and take over. However, if you sweat the small stuff, you’ll end up feeling tired and emotional (and exhausted) by the end of the week. Perhaps it’s time to de-stress, as you sample a session of meditation or try a spot of yoga? You might just enjoy it! Friday is fabulous for innovative ideas, alternative viewpoints, and bohemian friends.

LIBRA

Expect some tension as the Full Moon stirs up old grievances with a family member or a work colleague. If you sit back and let others make decisions, then you’ll just feel powerless. So natural diplomatic skills to help smooth troubled waters. Getting the ratio right between your public and private lives is an ongoing challenge. But if anyone can juggle complex commitments, it’s a well-balanced Libran!

SCORPIO

Neighbourhood activities and local connections are favoured, as the Full Moon encourages you of Jupiter and Uranus - you’ll be given the chance to heal an old emotional wound or patch up a relationship problem. Don’t let false Scorpio pride stop you from taking a giant leap forward when opportunity gratefully, with outstretched hands and an open heart.

SAGITTARIUS

If you don’t, then you’ll have to entertain yourself in more frugal ways. Finances and friends are a particularly messy mix, so strive to keep the two well separated. On Friday the Mercury/Uranus link favours innovative ideas at work and adventurous daydreams at home.

CAPRICORN

Monday’s feisty Full Moon lights up your sign, so relationship dramas are likely. Unless you can slip out of fussy Capricorn control-freak mode and instead, try the gentle art of compromise.

negative personal traits that you may have been unaware of. Use these experiences to work on

to interpersonal harmony.

AQUARIUS

ing in action this week, as Uranus and the Full Moon boost your tendency to detach or run away escaping into a private fantasy seems appealing, but the current problems will still be waiting when you return. So you need to get the balance right between dealing with daily challenges when they occur, and retreating into your own quirky inner world.

PISCES

You could bump into an old friend, discover long-forgotten love-letters, or re-connect with a seductive because they’re so selective. You intuitively know what is right for you - even though you may appear confused to others. Don’t let your family (or peer group) push you around or persuade you to do something you don’t believe in. Saturn (in your sign) encourages you to be sensible and stay grounded.

Wild Dog Control Program

Somerset Regional Council are conducting a wild dog baiting program throughout Somerset in an effort to control the wild dog problem.

Important information when baiting with 1080:

• Baiting can be carried out within 5km of a town. Prior approval from an authorised Council officer is required, increased risk mitigation and conditions apply.

• Baits cannot be laid within 50m of a roadway or within 5m of a boundary fence.

• Notification of 72 hours must be given to all adjoining neighbours (including across roadways).

• An authority to sign form is required if obtaining baits for another person.

• You must supply your rates notice.

• Unconsumed baits are to be retrieved within seven days and destroyed.

A Council employee will attend the following sites to assist with the preparation of 1080 poison baits for the control of dingoes/wild dogs:

10 July Kilcoy Showgrounds, 7.30am-9am

10 July Middle Creek, Bryden, 10.30am-12pm

• Please ensure all meat is fresh and well drained and baits must be fist sized (approximately 250g in South East Queensland areas).

• No bones, rotten meat or carcasses will be impregnated.

• Baits must be transported in stable, sealable, leak proof containers and all baits are to be laid as soon as possible as it is illegal to store impregnated baits.

RUGBY LEAGUE GATTON HAWKS

Women

Gatton 14 d. Oakey 8

Gatton Hawks won a close fought Presidents Cup against debutants Oakey on Saturday night. In a physical game each side did not give an inch and big

in a number of repeat sets on their try line. Captain Kim Dore and Courtney enter Hawks front rower; Ash Nolan on her 35 metre line. She busted through the torrid Oakey pack and ran deep into Flyer fullback Nat Webb swooping up sensational try. (Gatton 14-4). Oakey tried hard and did score through Clar(14-8) but Gatton’s effective swarming defence contained Oakey well enough all night to hold them out and the Hawks defended their 2022 Presidents both teams. There was a bad player in either team. Only parts of brilliance by each side’s gun players proved the difference. Oakey can hold their heads high after a grand performance that opened many eyes in the Toowoomba Sports Club Womens competition. Both teams are well coached and they had to be has each mentor had worked out their opposition and their players had to response with last ditch tackling and many times players were only inches from scoring. The determination of toughness of the competition and they are to be congratulated. Both Captains Kim Dore (Gatton) and Mireka Dean (Oakey) are excellent warriors for their respective sides. They both led by example and their game management

Zappa played above her weight and show a toughness not seen. Her work rate, especially in defence was excellenting sets and an amazing performance. In the end, it was a wonderful match and unfortunately there could only be one winner. Gatton 14 (Kim Dore, Caitlin Nolan, Nat Webb tries Emily Young goal) defeated Oakey 8 (Elaina Saluni, Clarissa Janes tries) Toowoomba Sports Club Player of the Final: Bonnie Zappa

sets on Oakey’s try line to score with 5 minutes remaining in the half. (6-0 at half time). Prior to Dore’s try, each side forced their opposition into spilling ball as the stanza. The game settled after half time and Gatton’s swarming defence proved a success as they continued to hold out Oakey. Player of the match Bonnie Zappa and Courtney Robinson were outstanding and they teamed up to create a small gap for Caitlin Nolan to squeeze through and get the Hawks to 10-0 after six minutes in the second half. Oakey’s Elaina Saluni was damaging all night for the Bears and was rewarded with a classic bulldozing try in the 46th minute to get the Bears back in the match. (10-4) Mireka and Erikana Dean were tremendous for their side as was the centre pairing of Clarissa Janes and Antonia Vito. The Dean girls tackled all night and Janes and Vito were always the most likely to turn the game around. Then with eight minutes remaining, the turning point! Gatton had outlasted Oakey

second half leading to a 17-45 loss. Gatton took 27 out to Roma (A) for both A and C grade in Round 9, with the C grade game ending in a 12-12 draw on the buzzer thanks to a charge down try from Duncan Beattie. A grade suffered a heartbreaking defeat 31-32 thanks to a penalty goal on the buzzer. Round 10 Ladies Day vs Dalby (H) was a fantastic day for the club, with a great turnout to support a tough round. The C grade side secured an important 24-7 victory that A grade game was one to remember, with the Gatton defence holding Dalby out for 10 minutes on the tryline only to crack on the buzzer. The try was not enough to win, with Gatton upsetting Bears (H) made their way down to Hugh Courtney Oval for a Round 11 clash, with both teams struggling for numbers. A back-and-forth game saw two Gatton tries fumbled, ultimately playing a pivotal role as the A grade team fell 28-34.

THIRTY skydivers successfully built a new Australian large formation record for Skydivers Over Sixty (SOS) on Friday June 30 with Skydive Ramblers in Toogoolawah.

Twenty-eight men and two women aged 60-75 from across Australia and New Zealand linked up in freefall to create the largest SOS formation.

The team had three warm-up jumps and succeeded on their third attempt at a 30-person formation.

They jumped from two aircraft at 14,000 feet,

and had approximately 70 seconds to meet in the sky, identify their place in the formation and take the correct, predetermined grips on arms or legs, holding for 3-4 seconds, before tracking away to clear air to deploy their parachutes.

It was organised and coached by Ben Nordkamp, Skydive Ramblers chief instructor, who recently achieved an SOS World record in the USA. The previous record was a 17-person formation, achieved in Batchelor, Northen Territory, in 2013.
