Gardeners supporting LifeFlight

THE LAIDLEY Garden Club Inc donated $5,000 to LifeFlight through the Gardening Fair held on the 8-9th September at the Laidley Cultural centre.

Thousands of visitors attended this amazing event with all things gardening.

The guest speaker area sure pulled the visitors in as Paul West was the highlight on Friday.

A gold coin donation on entry as well as money raised from the Garden club plant stall enabled us to bring the amount up to $5,000 for our chosen charity LifeFlight for 2023.

HAVE YOUR SAY

THANK you to artist Ellen Adriaansen for her collection of beautiful feline artwork on display as Artist of the Month (AOM) for September at the Kilcoy Courthouse Art Gallery.

Nijole Pengelley is KASI’s AOM for October 2023. Nijole says art is her passion and genuinely attempts to live life by going with the creative activities, personal development workshops, connecting with others and attempting to do everything with a loving

Nijole’s artwork is often a visual journey and diary of her own creative explorations and discoveries about herself. She has lead classes in meditation and self - exploration, taught many art classes and creative workshops (including needlecraft and graphics) and has gained a diploma in Transpersonal Art Therapy. Somerset Council left out of regional precincts program

SOMERSET Regional Councillors disapproved of the region’s omission from the federal government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (RPPP) in its ordinary meeting on September 27.

The program supports upgrades and works to regional, rural and remote precincts, including community and recreational areas, but does not extend to locations within the Greater Capital City Statistical Areas which encompasses the Somerset region.

The recommendation letter from council contends towns like Toogoolawah are farther from Brisbane CBD compared to eligible major urban centres such as Surfers Paradise and Maroochydore.

Somerset Regional Councillor Sean Choat said the exclusion of certain locations outlined on the map show a lack of understanding of the region.

“People are doing things based on lines on a map

with no understanding of Southeast Queensland,” Cr Choat said.

“Some of the areas to the south and north of the map are just ridiculous to not be included.”

It was considered council’s

Lowood Futures Strategy and Kilcoy Streetscape Revitalisation Project might have been eligible for funding consideration under RPPP.

The program has drawn comparisons to the feder-

Australians failing to prepare for emergencies, despite increasing risk

AUSTRALIAN Red Cross

(ARC) is calling all Australians to get emergency prepared after new data showed despite growing concern for disasters and emergencies, only 10% of people are actively getting ready.

Independent research conducted on behalf of ARC surveyed adults living across Australia and found respondents are bracing for an increase in natural disasters and emergen-

cies.

ARC chief of staff Penny Harrison said the data showed heightened expec-

years relating to emergencies, but action needed to be taken.

“People living in Australia are clearly thinking about what may lie ahead, with one in three worried about heatwaves, bushheavy rain over the next

Research conducted on behalf of the Australian Red Cross shows that Australians are becoming increasingly less emergency prepared despite heightened concerns for emergencies.

12 months, however that concern is not translating into active preparation,” Ms Harrison said.

Some rising statistics show: 58% of Australians expect to be impacted by

heatwaves in the coming 12 months, more than double 5 years ago (25%).

43% of Australians are concerned about the rain over the next 12 months compared to 29% in 2018.

38% of Australians expect to be impacted by major power outages (lasting 4 hours or longer)

Facing digital addiction

TUCKED away in the hills of Thornton and far removed from digital distractions, a group of students spent last week building self-awareness and social skills.

Kokoda Youth Foundation’s Digital Detox Program was held at Kokoda Park, south of Laidley, from September 24 to October 1 and welcomed young people from across Queensland with digital addictions to put down their technology and learn to face their emotions.

Program coordinator Chris Emert said the camp exposed students to new experiences with outdoor activities, information sessions.

“These kids are being separated from the business and activity of normal life on this camp without the ability to escape into their technology,” Mr Emert said. bubbles up for them, perhaps

things they haven’t addressed in a long time.”

Students like 15-year-old Maxwell spoke about their personal problems with technology.

“Last time I [did the program] because I had a massive tech addiction, with all the nights I spent going on my laptop, I think I spent up to about two terms staying up until about 2am,” Maxwell said.

“It was unhealthy, and my parents needed a lot of help.”

Through the Digital Detox

Program, students learned how to connect on deeply personal levels, without technology.

Georgia, 13, said she spent a lot of time on her phone.

“Once I’m done on my screen I regret going on there for that long, because I just scroll and scroll and send snaps back and forth,” she said.

Plainland student Jacob, 13, said he enjoyed an exercise called Barry’s Breathing, named after a camp youth worker.

Local members consider the Voice

MEMBER FOR BLAIR

SHAYNE NEUMANN MP

SAYING yes to the Voice is the right thing to do.

The upcoming referendum on the Voice is about something very simple – listening.

We all know Australia is one of the best countries in the world, but we also know not everyone is getting the same opportunities.

The current system is not working because instead of listening, Australia has been making assumptions about what First Nations people need – doing things to First Nations people, not with them.

This means too many Indigenous people are being left behind and do not get the same opportunities as everyone else – with lower life expectancy, higher rates of disease and infant mortality, higher rates of suicide, and fewer opportunities in education and training.

This is why Indigenous

Australians are asking for a Voice to Parliament – an advisory committee – that will give advice to the Government on key issues that

When governments listen to people about issues that decisions, get better results and deliver better value for

money.

The alternative is to close the door on the next generation of Indigenous Australians by sticking with a system that is not working.

It’s time to listen by saying ‘Yes’ to a Voice –because it’s the right thing to do.

Voice Referendum early voting now open

VOTING for the Voice Referendum is now open at two locations within the region: Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre (34 Lake Apex Dr, Gatton) and Esk Girl Guides (35 Hampton Rd, Esk). Voters will be asked whether they agree to a proposed change to the Constitution.

The Australian Electoral Commission guidelines state it is important to write either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, as all other responses become a judgement call as to the

voter’s intent.

Follow the ballot paper instructions to make sure your vote is counted.

To learn more about the proposal, visit voice.gov.au

MEMBER FOR WRIGHT SCOTT BUCHHOLZ MP

OUR country faces many challenges, including rising

Other important priorities include national security, crime, housing, energy, infrastructure, school standards, health, and mental health.

The upcoming referendum is also very important.

It is not simply about recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution.

That can be achieved without tying it to a risky Voice.

This Voice proposal goes much further. It would be the biggest change to our Constitution in history.

It covers all areas of ‘Executive Government’.

This means basically no issue would be beyond its reach.

It risks legal challenges.

The High Court would ultimately determine its

powers.

Some Voice supporters are upfront in saying that thistions and compensation and other radical changes.

It’s a big decision.

However, the Government refuses to provide basic details.

We don’t know how its members would be elected or chosen.

We don’t know how it

would make representations or be accountable.

Australians are being asked to vote before these details are worked out.

Enshrining the Voice into the Constitution would mean it’s permanent.

When we need to unite the country, this divides us.

Australian.

If you don’t know, say no.

“We wanted to have something out this way to show... what people can access in times of need,” she said.

“We have ICYS here, we have Mercy with all of our programs, we’ve got SES and police and just a lot of fun activities for the kids to try.”

Night of rock ‘n’ roll for vets charity

HAVE a great night out, enjoy some rock and roll, and support local veterans at the Rocks for Vet’s concert on October 21.

The one-night-only event at Porters Plainland Hotel is a fundraiser for local veteran’s charity Bootstraps.

There are four bands in the line-up, lead by Brisbane eight-piece band Kelly’s Heroes, promising a night full of great music and entertainment.

Bootstraps CEO Sam Kavanagh was approached by musician Keven Kelly of Kelly’s Heroes, who has previously hosted rock concerts for causes.

“His band and other performers and artists do something similar to Variety where they run rock concerts free of charge for charities,” he said.

“He said he’d like to do a rock concert for us and he can get a couple of bands to play some good music, anything from Buddy Holly to

“One of them is a sixteen-piece band with trombone, trumpet, saxophone,

the whole kit and caboodle.

“They’re going to play some really cool rock and

Tickets are $40 per person with the proceeds supporting

Bootstraps’ work with veterans and the wider community.

Bootstraps run leather

work classes from their Gatton premises for veterans, their families, and the wider community as a form of connection and recovery.

The money raised from the concert will go toward expanding the organisation and raising awareness of their mission.

“Whether it be through events we go to and talk to people, classes we put on for people, anything that’s going to promote our brand and make people aware of what we do,” Mr Kavanagh said.

Mr Kavanagh thanked Porters Plainland Hotel for not only hosting the concert, but their ongoing support of the charity.

Urban Utilities Plainland project complete

THE RIBBON has been cut on the new Plainland wastewater pump station, as part of Urban Utilities’ $32 million project for the Lockyer Valley.

The project will cater for a greater capacity and reliability of wastewater services for Plainland community.

The new pump station will replace Urban Utilities’ existing tankering facility on Gehrke Road.

Urban Utilities executive leader of integrated solutions Chris Bulloch said the

project would cater for the projected growth in the area through to 2040.

“We know more people are choosing to call the Lockyer Valley home, which is why we’re investing in infrastructure to support the future growth of the region,” he said.

The project also included construction of an 8km pipe to connect the new Plainland wastewater pump station to the Laidley Wastewater Treatment Plant, as well as upgrades to the

existing treatment plant infrastructure.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Tanya Milligan was pleased to see the completion of the project.

“Our Plainland and Laidley communities are growing, and we welcome this Lockyer Valley,” she said. The project was delivered by the Urban Utilities project management team with the support of their delivery partners John Holland, GHD and Pensar.

Laidley diner celebrates 25 years

ESTABLISHED in 1998, Kelli’s Diner has been a beloved choice among Laidley locals and travellers to the region wanting to enjoy a tasty feed for 25 years.

The community-oriented diner will be celebrating its 25th anniversary on October 7, with the store handing out celebratory patty cakes to the public to mark the occasion on Friday October 6.

Born and raised in Laidley, Kelli’s Diner co-owner Kelli Schultz said building relationships with locals has been crucial to the store’s longevity.

“You get to know the locals, and I think that’s part of small business,” she said.

“Big businesses don’t seem to care about the personal touch, but small businesses rely on the personal touch.”

Over the years, the business has extended its support to numerous community

groups, actively participated in countless events, and helped whenever possible, including supporting the Laidley Hospital and RSL

Ms Schultz co-owns the store with her sister Kym and said they were raised with old-fashioned solid values from their parents.

“We wouldn’t have gotten

into this without our parents,” she said.

“Without my mum, brothers and dad’s help, dad did a lot of maintenance, it was just all very family orientated.”

Ms Schultz said a highlight of her career was providing people with working opportunities.

“Some of the young ones work through school till they

get their university degree, some of them go, some stay, but it’s great to give them a stepping stone,” Kelli said. She is now looking forward to the 30th anniversay.

Dining through the years

Popular picks on Kelli’s menu

KELLI’S Diner has been a favoured destination for a diverse range of delicious foods, including burgers, hearty meals, sandwiches and cakes.

The takeaway diner offers foods for the whole year round, with chips and gravy go-to’s in the winter and deserts and slushies popular during the warmer months.

Kelli’s Diner co-owner Kelli Schultz said a fan-favourite is the diner’s home-made meals, especially amongst the older generations.

“Some of the young ones take it for work, then we have older couples that come in and buy meals because they don’t want to cook anymore, and it makes life easier for them,” Kelli said.

Kelli said the store’s deserts and salads were also popular items.

“We also sell a lot of deserts, we make cheesecakes, we have the salad rolls and sandwiches.”

Kelli’s kept the community of Laidley well-fed and funded

NOT MANY small businesses can say they have done as much for their community as Kelli’s Diner.

Kelli and her team have kept the Laidley community and it’s numerous sporting and community groups well-fed and funded for many, many years.

Member for Lockyer Jim McDonald said Kelli’s Diner had promeals for many in her time.

“Kelli has been a champion of the local community for years,” Mr McDonald said.

Laidley District Cricket Club is one of the many organisationsted from Kelli’s support over the years.

Club senior coordinator Ashley Lawless said Kelli was constantly delivering back to the community.

“She sponsors the club but further to that she caters, at a very

low cost, for all our sandwiches and sausage rolls in the canteen,” Mr Lawless said.

“Also in the past she’s donated

“This year, in particular, she’s players of the round in juniors.”

Mr Ashwell said cricket clubs

Kelli’s Diner still kicking after the COVID pandemic

were particularly reliant on community support.

“You’ve got to create a group where people want to get together and be together, and to do that you want to make it as low-cost as possible,” he said.

“It’s through the support of businesses like Kelli’s that helpable and enjoyable for people to join.”

Laidley Pioneer Village president John Barwell said Kelli’s was ‘the go-to’ for catering events.

“We’ve been using Kelli’s diner for quite a few years, probably over 10 years since I’ve been here,” Mr Barwell said.

“We serve their scones when we get a tour bus in, and we always get compliments on the quality of the scones.

“It’s a real asset to the town, that’s for sure.”

LIKE all businesses, Kelli’s Diner had to adapt to the unprecedented restrictions that the COVID-19 pandemic caused to trading.

Kelli’s Diner co-owner Kelli Schultz, who has been in the food industry for nearly 40 years, said COVID brought one of the most challenging adjusting periods for all businesses.

place, no one knew what to do, we had to get rid of the tables and chairs,” she said.

“No one knew what was going on, and rules changed all the time.”

Ms Schultz said the store could stay open as an essential service, but the pandemic had changed how the store operated.

“We’ve sort of branched into the takeaway side of the business,” she said.

“Before COVID, we had dine-in and takeaway, we just brought some of the tables back in now.”

Truckies remembered 20 years on

LIGHTS on the Hill celebrated its 20th anniversary on Saturday September 30, with close to 700 trucks from Brisbane and Toowoomba converging at the Gatton Showgrounds to commemorate a special day for the transport industry. The annual event is dedicated to remembering the men and women in the Australian transport industry

who have passed away. Lights on the Hill president Tim Lowien said the event was a special occasion for the trucking community to come together.

“I have talked with truckers in Canada who had the big Freedom Convoy during COVID,” he said.

“They said that there’s nothing like this they have ever heard of where fallen drivers are remembered.”

Marianne and Stanley Hall travelled from Bundaberg to commemorate their son Daniel Hall as they watched the Brisbane convoy from a bridge with friend Annette Andrew.

‘THE DECISION by the National Management Group to transition the attempted eradication of varroa mite to management could potentially cost thousands for local beekeepers like Zabel’s Beekeeping.

Hatton Vale beekeeper Russell Zabel said he was not surprised by the announcement.

“Being a really tiny arachnid, it’s very hard to control and stop it’s movement,” he said.

“The Queensland Government’s going to put up a COVID-type border entry restriction of bees coming into the state, so that’s an interesting concept.

“Technically all you need is a queen bee in someone’s pocket and

it could come across the border.”

Mr Zabel said he had already seen several beehives for sale, an indication of what would come.

smaller-operator beekeepers will just give up... and the bigger beekeepers will have to spend thousands on chemical control,” he said. said.

Mr Zabel said the news could cost millions of dollars for beekeepers.

“Once you have varroa mite there will be a need to have chemical control, whether it be pest strips in the bottom of the hive or some other fogging method,” he said.

“In the process of controlling the mite there will be hive losses as well.”

MOORE WEEKLY STARS

October 2-8, 2023

ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

This week the Sun, Mars and Mercury are all revving up your relationship and joint ventures zones. So harmonious partnerships and creative projects are highlighted. If you combine diplomacy with dynamism (and Ram charm with a sense of adventure) then you’ll sail through any challenges. Balance is the key. Your motto is from actress Claire Danes (who has the Sun in Aries and the Moon in Libra): “Relationships are a constant negotiation and balance.”

TAURUS (Apr 20 - May 20)

Remember that Jupiter (planet of expansion) and Uranus (planet of change) are both transiting through your sign. Between now and May 25 (when Jupiter moves into Gemini) it will be easier to initiate changes than at other times. So make the most of the opportunities that are around! Your mantra for the moment is from peace activist (and birthday great) Mahatma Gandhi: “Our greatest ability as humans is not to change the world, but to change ourselves.”

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

Expect your home-life to be busy and bamboozling, as Pluto and Neptune link up with your patron planet, Mercury. Aim to be very clear in the way you communicate on Monday and Tuesday, otherwise misunderstandings are likely. Wednesday is wonderful for looking beneath the surface gloss and gaining some deeper insights. Then Mercury moves into peaceful and harmonious Libra on Thursday, which will calm your nerves and rebalance your brain.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

Calling all Crabs – are you making the most of your clever mind? This week Pluto and Mercury activate your communication and education zones. So conversation, passionate debate, informal study, detailed research and strategic thinking will take you far. But – in order to avoid misunderstandings – do your best to convey your ideas in a clear and precise way. It’s also a good time to dig deeper into a relationship problem – the answer is

LEO (July 23 - Aug 22)

Languid Lions love to be pampered and preened but it’s time to jump out of your comfort zone and shake up your usual routine! Jupiter and Uranus are both jumping through your public reputation zone, which encourages you to do things differently, as you banish boredom and initiate positive changes. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great, political and peace activist Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

The buzz words this week are confusion and obsession. On Monday, nebulous Neptune opposes Mercury (your boss planet) and life becomes confusing as a family member, work colleague or close friend stuffs up your perfectly planned schedule. Then – on Tuesday and Wednesday – you could become totally a problem. With the help of passionate and persistent Pluto, there’s a good chance you’ll be successful!

LIBRA (Sep 23 - Oct 22)

Courtesy of your patron planet, Venus, a situation involving a class, club or friendship group should start to improve. With the Sun, Mars and Mercury visiting your sign this week, make sure your thoughts, words, actions and aspirations are all compatible and consistent. Your mantra for the moment is from birthday great, politician and peace activist Mahatma Gandhi: “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21)

Scorpios are drawn to extreme views, black and white thinking, and intense communication. Compulsive thoughts and bossy behaviour are certainly a danger this week, as Pluto links up with Mercury. But there are three planets in Libra, which encourage a more balanced approach as you contemplate the subtle shades of grey in-between. You dream, or a fateful meeting with someone special.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

This week, expect mental confusion and communication problems at home or work. The Sun, Mars and Mercury are moving through peace-loving Libra, in your friendship and networking zones. If you practice the gentle arts of patience and persuasion, then you’ll be surprised how much easier life can be. Draw inspiration from birthday great, peace activist Mahatma Gandhi: “Leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people.”

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)

The Sun, Mars and Mercury are visiting yourdence and communication skills. So make the most of this celestial gift and show other people what you are truly capable of as you write that report, chair that meeting or clinch that deal. Wednesday is wonderful for doing research about an upcoming trip. Draw inspiration from birthday great, writer Anne Rice: “I’m always looking, and I’m always asking

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18)

Flirt alert! With Venus in your partnership zone (and three planets powering through charm the cynics and dazzle the doubters. charm mode, you’re hard to resist.) Already attached? It’s time to reboot a tired relationship with some good old-fashioned romance. Singles – are you searching for your soulmate? Be on the lookout for a gregarious Gemini or a lusty Leo.

PISCES (Feb 19 - Mar 20)

It’s a good time to expand your world via new local friendships and peer group connections. If you link up with like-minded people, it will open doors of opportunity, professionally and personally. But Neptune (your ruler) opposes Mercury on Monday and Tuesday. So be careful what you say in person and post online, as a casual comment could lead to confusion and controversy. Commitments you make this week may not look so appealing next week!

CRICKET

LAIDLEY DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB

Cricket Ipswich Season 2023/24

Brothers Ipswich Cricket Club v Laidley District Cricket Club @ Ivor Marsden (Ray Walker oval) - Date: 30/09/23

1st Division – 50 over match

Brothers Ipswich won the toss and sent the Bluedogs in on what looked to be a greenish pitch after recent storms during the week. Chris Wilson and Joe Sippel got Laidley off to a positive start before Boettcher claimed both wickets. Ben O’Connell and Kade Martin steadied the ship and pushed Laidley to 77 before O’Connell fell. Two more quick wickets fell in skipper Alex Welsh and Kade Martin. Laidley 5-94 and soon becoming 6-115 when Bibek joined the pavilion. Youngster Noah Plater (41*) and the experienced Michael Sippel (46- also his age. ) pushed the score to a competitive 212.

Brothers started well with Amila -

ever it was skipper Alex Welsh that broke the opening partnership. Welsh would go on and claim 4-7 off his ten overs with Will Peasley-MacFarlane cleaning up the tale with 4-35 off 9. Strong performances from Noah Plater and Michael Sippel with the bat. Alex Welsh and Will Peasley-MacFarlane share the spoils with the ball.

Great win for Laidley.

2nd Division – Bye

3rd Division- Competition commences 7th of October

VALLEY VIKINGS

TOUGH OPENER FOR VIKINGS.

The timing couldn’t have been worse than to draw the top team, Centrals, in the opening round. With two away on Rep duty, some injuries and others absent for the holiday long weekend, the Vikings were missing some

Cahill Park deck, the Vikings did well enough to have them 6-254 after 50 overs. Zeke Kugel turned in an amazing 1-17 off ten consecutive overs, while Hayden Sippel was again highly economical. For a while, the Vikings were in the chase, when Kelsey O’Dea and Rogan Utz advanced them to 1-80. But with Kelsey, and Rogan, again with 50 plus, back in the sheds, the remainder found the challenge too tough, and fell for 159.

The Lockyer season is highly anticipated, with Glenore Grove names from previous years being

spruiked around, which would beef up the personnel for some clubs. The popular Friday Night T 20 under lights is shaping to be as attractive as last year and is looked on with envy by neighbouring Associations. It all kicks off on October 14, which is nearly upon us.

A warm sunny Saturday afternoon and a mild Northerly breeze gusting often was present for the not so long 800yd range. Although shorter, the week, with and a tricky mirage made sure scores were kept low. A Brave move by new shooter S Cahlon to use at 800yd paid off with a creditable 90. 5.

Adrian takes on the Arizonian skies

SKYDIVE Ramblers Toogoolawah instructor Adrian

Seemann spent July and August 2023 representing Australia in canopy piloting nationals across Europe. The sport is quite niche, and Seemann said he has years with around 4,000

“What you’re trying to do is turn your parachute towards the ground to create

height and, depending on the discipline, either go as far as possible, as fast as possible to drag water for roughly for roughly 40 metres and then land as accurately as possible afterwards,” Seemann said.

“You are trying to turn toward the ground, creating little bit of time to get into it,

it’s not something beginner from Germany in 2016 to become an instructor with Ramblers.

“I started competing in canopy piloting in 2018, I did in the intermediate category,” Seemann said.

“Then in 2019 I did my in the open category, and in 2019 I also got to go to a world cup and represent Australia.

“[In July and August 2023] I went to Italy to compete at the Italian Canopy Piloting then I went to the Czech Republic and competed there as well for another big canopy piloting competition.”

Later this month, Seemann will head to Arizona, USA to compete in the biennial World Cup of Canopy

Piloting.

Somerset Regional Council awarded Seemann $1,000 through the Somerset Excellence Awards for June 2023, which he was grateful for. sport and there’s not much money in it, but it costs a lot, especially a trip to the US,” he said.

“Being able to get some support from the council here so I’m really, really thankful for the support.”

Seemann said canopy details.

“If you can be a tiny bit more aerodynamic then you go a tiny bit faster,” he said.

“There’s constant progression and constant tweaking of little things to get that fascinating, which keeps me

“You still learn a tiny little bit with each jump.”
