to have no entry fee again this year. Our section also relies upon your continued involvement.

Also many thanks to our willing helpers that we relied upon to help us pull it all together within a short time frame.

Again, without your help and encouragement we would not be able to make the produce ready for judging and display.

Given the issues however, I feel strongly enough to be vocal for my community. We deserve better.

It’s just not good enough and I can’t sit back and ‘accept’ this behaviour until I vote in the next Council election.

Councillor Qualischefski’s actions have compromised his ability to effectively represent the interests of the Lockyer Valley community.

The trust and respect required for his continued tenure have been misconduct.

unacceptable for any person, let alone an elected representative.

of Councillor Qualischefski

In all of this, the sigcaused to the brave individual who brought the complaint is being undermined.

She deserves much better.

The decision also states that ‘Councillor Qualischefski must reimburse Council the amount of $2,000.00, representing some of the costs incurred arising from his misconduct’.

I urge Councillor Qualischefski to show some humility and responsibility by reimbursing the Council for all costs incurred due to his misconduct.

I am disappointed that my rates are contributing to funding any of the costs associated with this poor behaviour.

Resignation is an appropriate course of action for Councillor Qualischefski to take in order to uphold the integrity of the Council and demonstrate accountability for his actions.

Churches of Christ addresses the closure of Amaroo aged care home

CHURCHES of Christ have responded to the displeasure of community members to the planned closure of the Amaroo Aged Care facility in Gatton by September 1.

In a statement released July 26, Churches of Christ interim CEO Mike Folland said there had been misinformed commentary on the closure, with the judgment coming down to an irreparable safety issue concerning erosion of Tenthill Creek.

Multiple engineer reports were commissioned after report outlining enough information to close Amaroo.

“This report included an overlay of the likely erosion points, which included four occupied rooms in our aged

care service and the kitchen,” he said.

“We know that part of the site sits on sandstone, but the Amaroo building sits on

‘reactive’ soil which becomes highly unstable when it comes in contact with water.”

As previously reported in The Independent, much of the

Steinhardt & Associates

disappointment from family and residents of Amaroo came from the short time frame with no closer alternative homes available.

Christine Panzram, who has a 91-year-old mother at the centre, said Churches of Christ had not considered the impact on the community be-

fore deciding on the closure.

“We promised mum right from day one that if she was going to a home, it would be within the Lockyer Valley,” she said.

“This is where she has lived her whole life.”

Mr Folland said Churches of Christ fully supported residents and their families to relocate to a service of their choosing.

“I hope the community understands how hard it was for us to close Amaroo and how regrettable it was for our residents to relocate,” he said.

“We took a watch and wait approach to this service since

“We balanced the needs of the community for residential aged care against the continued erosion of Tenthill Creek and the potential safety risk it posed.”

25 years of community banking

BENDIGO Bank’s unique Community banking model is celebrating 25 years of community owned and operated banking in Australia.

The internationally acclaimed model, which was founded in Victoria, has helped many communities invest in and retain a local bank in their business centres.

The Lowood & Fernvale Bendigo Community Bank, established in 2010, was built on the success of the early community banking pioneers and the foresight and commitment of some local business leaders.

It is one of 300 branches for a purpose’ model across Australia.

Lowood & Fernvale Bendigo Community Bank chairman Aaron Heck said his bank was proud to have reinvested over $1.3 million back into communities across the Somerset region since its inception.

Schools, sporting clubs, gardens, kindergarten fetes,

“We’re able to give back to our community, and it’s

a great way of keeping the community alive,” Mr Heck said.

“The Big Four have got banking sector is, but we’re

still the little guy in the community’s corner.”

Currently, Bendigo’s Community banking sector records a collective $20 billion in loans and $31.3billion

“Our purpose is to feed into the prosperity of our customers and their communities,” she said.

“The Community Bank model is aligned with both our vision and our purpose and we are immensely proud of its success.”

Mr Heck said Bendigo’s 25th Community Banking anniversary was another great opportunity to thank the Somerset community for their support, the bank team for their valued service to clients, and directors past and present for their commitment to the bank’s success and community prosperity.

“It’s good to remind our locals that we’re still here as a full banking opportunity here in the Somerset,” Mr Heck said.

“We’re very lucky and very happy that we’re still here.”

Thanks to his reliable service and dedication to Lockyer Valley farmers, Jonathan ‘Jono’ Sippel of Sipelectrical is being recognised by the Lockyer Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Tourism Business Recognition Dinner on August 5 for the Agricultural Services category.

Jono started his business in 2006, after leaving school in 2000 and joining the electrical trade.

“I concentrated on the farming side of things with my old boss,” Jono said.

“I loved the farming side because I grew up on a farm, and I’ve just stuck with my farming since then.”

He grew up in Upper Tenthill on his father’s 60 acre plot near the cricket grounds.

“He was a vegetable farmer, so onions, lettuce, lucerne, spuds… anything and everything,” Jono said.

Jono took his experience on the farm and applied it to his electrical apprenticeship.

“At the end of my apprenticeship I gave my boss 12 months and thought ‘I could do something small myself’, and it’s grown from there but still stayed a small family-run business,” he said.

“I’m not sitting in the

on the tools keeping all our customers happy as best we can.”

Jono is mobile on the ground, taking service requests as they come.

“If they’re mobile, they keep getting you back and they’re happy,” he said.

“If they’ve got an issue, Jono will be there.”

RM Kluck Farms grower Joe Kluck said Jono was very

reliable.

“I’ve only been on the farm for about seven years but I knew him prior to that playing cricket with him,” Mr Kluck said.

“He does the farm, he does our houses, all the bores, anything to do with electrical work.

“He understands farming, if someone has a break down he’s willing to come out straight away, and if he can’t

get there he’ll tell you he can’t get there.

“Sometimes when you have a breakdown you’ve got people standing there looking at you and that’s on your payroll.”

Mr Kluck said Jono did a lot for local farmers.

“The other day up on the Downs I had a pump problem and he dropped everything to come up and have a look,” he said.

2023 BUSINESS RECOGNITION

“At the drop of a hat he comes out, solves the going again.

“Our name’s on the farm but he’s one of the reasons why we’re still going too and I think a lot of other farmers would probably say the same thing about him.”

Despite probably being the most sought-after man in the Lockyer Valley, if you are not a farmer then there is a good

chance you have never heard of Jono Sippel.

Sipelectrical managed to build its client base almost entirely through word of mouth.

“I don’t look for other work elsewhere, I don’t anywhere at all,” Jono said.

“Obviously if you’re doing a good job with one farm he talks to his neighbour over the fence and before you realise… as time goes, you grow.”

Jono said it was great to be recognised for his service to the valley’s growers.

“You do what you can to help them blokes keep things moving, and that’s what I’m here for, to keep the valley moving,” he said.

“That’s what the valley thrives on, the farming community, and without the farmers this place is dead, it’s just a grass paddock.

“If you keep the farmers mobile, keep their machines running and keep everything moving, then they spend money in the valley with me and other companies and it keeps the valley moving.”

Jono primarily services the Lockyer Valley, but also travels to service farms in the Southern Downs and as far as Kilcoy and Brisbane when the need calls.

He runs Sipelectrical with his wife Annaka and two employees, Jake Gierke and Ezekial Kugel.

Young cast full of heart in classic American tale

‘CHARLOTTE’S Web’ has captured hearts for generations and its charm lives on in Laidley this month.

Lockyer Regional Performing Arts (LRPA) will stage the classic American tale of a little pig, a friendly spider, and all their farmyard friends from August 18.

Director Emma Erdis said many would be familiar with the heartwarming story.

“It’s a beautiful adaptation of the story that we all remember when we were kids,” she said.

“It’s so sweet and it’s been beautiful to put together with such a creative young group of people, most of whom are very new to theatre.”

The play is a Puddle Jump-

ers production, the theatrecally for actors aged 18 and under.

“Our youngest is 5 and our oldest is 18 so there’s a really vast expanse of ages throughout that bracket,” Ms Erdis said.

“It’s been really beautiful watching the older ones mentor and take care of the younger cast members.”

directing a Puddle Jumpers play and her second time working with LRPA after her role as musical director in last year’s ‘Little Women: The Broadway Musical’.

“As soon as I got the opportunity to work on ‘Charlotte’s Web’ I knew that

back and make some more really good memories with this theatre company,” she said.

With more than thirty cast members participating, Ms Erdis ensured every actor got the most from their roles.

“We’ve managed to adapt our production of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ to really accommodate the cast that we have and it shows,” Ms Erdis said.

“There are very few moments where all of them aren’t on stage just absolutely having a ball.”

‘Charlotte’s Web’ is on at the Laidley Cultural Centre on August 18, 19, 25 and 26.

Women supporting women with craft

A CRAFTS group designed to provide a supportive space for women to embrace their creative passions, prioritise selfcare, and relish the joy of crafting together is currently running in the Somerset Region.

3 R’s Creative Craft Retreats is a network of like-minded women that dedicate time to their crafts hobby by holding crafts workshops and going on creative craft retreats.

3 R’s Creative Craft Retreats founding member Geraldine Birtwistle said she helped found the group with two of her friends to create an outlet for women to take time for themselves.

“Women, in general, take on a lot of responsibility between full-time work and caring for family and don’t often take time out for themselves,” she said.

“So, the three R’s stands for rest, respite, and restore because having been in carer roles, we know that

women get burnt out, women need some respite from caring, women need to have a bit of rest, and they need to restore their lives to be able to continue caring.”

3 R’s Creative Craft Retreats founding member

Sharon Andrews said the group felt encouraged to start after recognising a connective element missing from previous retreats they had gone on.

“There was a whole segment missing in terms of looking after people and looking after people’s wellbeing and giving them that opportunity to take a break and enjoy time with likeminded women,” she said.

“Our motto is we’re inclusive of all ladies, it doesn’t matter what craft you do.”

3 R’s Creative Craft Retreats have a mini retreat at the CWA hall Esk on October 7-8.

If you would like to get involved, contact the group on 0409 761 268.

Honouring life-long members and new kitchen dedication

UNITING Church of Gatton held a special service on Sunday morning, July 30, followed by the dedication of its new kitchen renovations and committed members of the Church.

Pastor John Braithwaite said the old kitchen was pretty decrepit and in desperate need of renovations.

“Cupboard doors were had lived its useful life,” he said.

Renovations began in

in June, costing around $90,000.

The kitchen was dedicated the the Church’s Ladies Fellowship.

“They did all sorts of

things, running street stalls, morning teas and raising funds,” Pastor Braithwaite said.

“That group is the source of the bulk of the money

which has come in.”

Five members also received gifts for their many years of service to the Uniting Church of Gatton, including Don Grieve.

Grandchester steamers celebrates 25 years

THE GRANDCHESTER Model Live Steam Association will be marking the 25th anniversary of being open to the public with a public running anniversary day on Sunday, August 6, from 10am-2pm at 2 Ipswich Street, Grandchester.

Grandchester Model Live Steam Association vice president Jake Gillam welcomed everyone to join in on a fun day of riding miniature trains.

“Don mows the lawn, he’s 91, and he told us the other day ‘I’m getting to the stage where I don’t think I can do this much longer’,”

Pastor Braithwaite said.

“It’s for the whole family to come along from 12 months and older, and children said.

Make a day of it and visit the GMLSA as they celebrate a quarter of a century this Sunday.

Alan and his entrepreneurial spirit

ALAN Jaenke was born at the Esk Hospital on March 22, 1940.

He was the eldest son of Reginald and Clarice Jaenke. He has an older sister Veronica, known as Bonnie, and a younger brother Leonard, known as Lenny, and a younger sister Heather.

This little fella had it tough from the very beginning.

He wasn’t expected to live, he wasn’t expected to walk and he wasn’t expected to father children.

Well didn’t he prove them all wrong!

Alan grew up at Gallanani at the current ‘Mount View’ property just north of Esk.

primary years because in those days you were needed on the farm.

Alan was always an entrepreneur.

As a young kid, a fascination for birds was evident (the feathered kind) and he would make snares and catch and sell them.

Alan continued workingishing school until he landed baker at Molenhause Bakery. While working at the bakery he had a keen eye on his future wife.

Patti was then working at the Commercial Hotel in Esk as a nanny to four children.

Alan and Patti’s courtship continued for seven years and they were married on March 23, 1963 at St Stephen’s church in Ipswich at 11am. It had to be early in the day

because the family had to get home to milk the cows.

Daughter Kay was born in 1965, followed by Wayne in 1966.

Kay and Wayne grew up very close together and have always looked out for each other.

Alan was always searching for ways to make a living.

ticeship at the bakery and secured a job with Mr Poole at the Esk Butcher Shop and continued in this profession as the sole slaughterman for about 20 years at the same premise where Brisbane Valley Meats is today.

Alan only ever knew how to work hard and would slaughter at night and during the sunny hours he would farm watermelons.

During the mid 1970s, he

took the plunge into farming watermelons full time.

Alan grew the largest watermelon, The Jaenke Giants. The Jaenke Giants were marketed to restaurants, tourist resorts and fruit sellers.

He picked an 87kg melon which gave Australia, for having the biggest watermelon for 1988.

Alan was an Inaugural and Charter member of the Brisbane Valley Apex Club from 1971-1977 and was nominated to take on the position

and he held this position until 1977.

During this time Alan gained 100% dinner attendance and was awarded Apexian of the Year for three consecutive years.

In the 1980s he bought the family a ski boat with a 350 Chevvy motor where the family could enjoy some fun water activities away from the melon patch.

All the grandchildren will remember many days out on Lake Somerset.

1987 was the year of the construction of their Fish Farm enterprise, a partnership at that time which evolved into their full-time careers. With Patti’s involvement, it became a well-recognised tourist facility for catch and release.

The year 2000 was the year of the Ostrich for Alan and Patti and the inception of the Brisbane Valley Ostrich and Fish Farm.

Taking a leap of faith, they purchased two pairs of ostriches for a princely sum of $100,000.

The ostrich industry was very lucrative during their time therefore it was a great success.

Alan always loved his founding members of the Grand Wivenhoe Social Fishing Club which was founded in 1995.

competition and was almost waiting for the comp to begin.

Alan was awarded Life Membership of the Club in 2020.

As the years went on, Alan and Patti decided to scale it back and start taking it easy.

In 2023 they sold their Fish Farm properties and retired.

Alan has been described by many as a man of few words, a quiet achiever, a humble man of integrity with an exceptional work ethic, all

Making merry at Xmas in July

CHRISTMAS came early to the residents of Marburg this year at the annual Christmas in July markets on July 22.

Run by the Marburg Show Society, this year’s markets were the biggest so far since they began the Christmas in July event four years ago. There were more than 50 market stalls and the multi16 prizes, including lovely donations from stall holders.

Olivia feels like she can put her best foot forward

SHE MAY not be a true-blue Toogoolawah local, but Olivia Harrison (nee Frahm) has the support of Toogoolawah and the West Moreton Brisbane Valley Sub Chamber (WMBVSC) behind her.

The Toogoolawah Showgirl 2022 and WMBVSC Showgirl 2022 will attend the 41st Queensland Showgirl Awards Celebration Dinner next Friday August 11, where someone will be crowned the 2023 Queensland Country Life Showgirl.

Last year, Olivia began work at Teys Australia in Condamine as a livestock administrator and doing accounting work.

“I went back to the Toogoolawah Show Ball again at

the start of June and I handed over that title,” Olivia said.

“I competed in the stock horse classes at the Proston Show, that’s where I originally grew up.”

Olivia said the town of Toogoolawah had thrown itself behind her.

“That’s really nice to see because I’m not a true-blue Toogoolawah local girl,” she said.

“You feel like you can put your best foot forward if they all think that you’ve got a chance to.”

In March 2023, Olivia got married, making her the only married entrant this year.

“I think I’m only the second ever,” Olivia said.

Olivia thanked her family, friends, husband and Show Society for their support.

Growers checked for underpayments

THE FAIR Work Ombudsman (FWO) made surprise inspections of horticulture businesses around the Lockyer Valley region to check workers are getting the right pay last week.

Fair Work reported inspectors were on the ground at Gatton to assess about 20 farms and labour-hire companies.

The FWO received intelligence regarding potential non-compliance in the region, such as alleged non-payment for time rates, underpaid minimum rates, below-Award rates to visa holders, unpaid casual, weekend and public holiday loadings, unauthorised deductions and pay slip breaches.

Acting Fair Work Ombudsman Kristen Hannah

said the agency was committed to boosting compliance among agriculture sector employers.

“Inspectors are out iners to account if they are not meeting their obligations,” Ms Hannahs said.

“We also act to ensure employers understand their legal responsibilities, including record-keeping and the minimum wage guarantee for pieceworkers.”

There is a free webinar for employers and employees on August 10 to learn more about Australian workplace laws. Register at fairwork.gov. au/newsroom/webinars

Employers and employees can call the Fair Work Infoline on 13 13 94.

New response plan to

THE NATIONAL Fire Ant Eradication Program will toughen compliance measures as a new response plan puts preventing humanassisted spread at the heart invasive South American pest.

The National Program’s work will be complemented by the Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce (FAST), which has been separately funded with a $37.5 million investment by the Queensland Government.

Under the National Fire Ant Eradication Program, there will be a new containment area that will form a horseshoe around infestation areas spanning from Moreton Bay in the north, west to the Lockyer Valley, east into the Gold

Coast and south to the Tweed Shire and will include community self-treatment projects in Ipswich, Logan

and the Gold Coast.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for

Rural Communities Mark Furner said the strategy included more compliance to crack down on people who do not comply with biosecurity measures. “We will be coming down tough on compliance,” Mr Furner said.

of up to $470,000 or threeyears imprisonment.” Fire ant biosecurity zones apply to all individuals and businesses who work with organic materials sourced from within southeast infestation, being legally ant biosecurity zones and before moving them to a new location.

Cutting competitors show off at Mt Beppo

THE AUSTRALIAN Cutting Horse Group and JR Cutting & Performance Horses held their second 2023 competition at Mt Beppo on July 22.

Event organiser Juliann Baulch said the competition had almost 130 entrants travelling great distances for a great weekend of horse cutting.

“It was good to see a great mob of like-minded people all in the one spot

doing what they enjoy and love,” Mrs Baulch said.

“The winner of the seniors, Des Pinney, he had an absolutely wonderful run, but there bit [two-handed] runs all the way through and the one-handed competition was pretty solid.”

Mrs Baulch thanked the transporters and cattle donors for making the day possible.

Keith’s EA never missed a beat

LOCKYER Valley driver

Keith Edwards enjoyed a successful weekend at Carnell Raceway in Stanthorpe on July 22-23 for round three of the Short Circuit Motorsport Association’s 2023 competition.

Keith said his EA Ford Falcon Australian Saloon ran extremely well over the weekend.

“You’ve got to be careful about blowing your own horn, but this car went so well,” he said.

“I’m a bit damaged myself, of crook knees and what have you, but the car never missed a beat and never put a foot wrong.”

Keith was joined by fellow Lockyer Valley drivers Jayden and Craig Manteufel, and Cec Morgan.

“Poor Jayden had a few

mechanical dramas, and that does happen… but all in all we put a really good show in,” Keith said.

“We’re very keen competitors and we’d love support in our area, because we’re going

down there and doing the best we can.

“We like the short circuit because it allows you to run and you can come up against some very competitive

drivers.”

Keith said round three was host to ‘a whole lot’ of new drivers from southeast Queensland and New South Wales.

“It was good to see a whole

cars,” he said.

“The racing was quite quick, and quite intense.”

Keith and the other drivers now look forward to the Historic Leyburn Sprints on

August 19 and 20, where Keith plans to compete in his new John Bowe Caterpillar 600 Replica Touring Car.

“I’ve been running Leyburn for 20 years,” Keith said.

However – with Saturn opposing Mercury – too much haste could land you in hot water. So do your best to get the balance right between thinking things through and being proactive.

TAURUS

Expect professional problems or domestic dramas, as the Full Moon and retro Venus stir up old grievances. Use your diplomatic talents back and let others make decisions, you’ll feel powerless. If you do connect with someone special, there’ll be plenty of roadblocks before the romance takes off.

SCORPIO

GATTON HAWKS

Gatton Hawks improved their crucial, for and against points the top two of the Toowoomba A Grade competition. They defeated Oakey 66-4 in a dominant display at Cahill Park sporting complex last night.

Captain Haydan Lipp had the ball on a string. He set up four pointers all night and grabbed one himself in a polished performance. His backline relished the service from Lipp with Tyrell Woodley scoring a hattrick as did Nick Short and winger Bailey Williams scoring a double in the 12 try romp. Oakey toiled away but they were up against a pretty good side and at home. Captain AJ Chong grabbed a four pointer for his side in the second half.

Gatton now travel to Clifton next week in a crucial clash against the Warriors then they face Brothers and Dalby. Local student reaches international futsal stage

LOCKYER District High School year 12 student

Amelia Morris has achieved representation at the highest level playing in the Under 19 Australian National Women’s team in the U.S. Futsal National Championship in Las Vegas on July 14-16.

Having previously represented Queensland in a school competition, Morris said stepping up to the international stage was an incredible learning experience.

“Playing with people I’ve never played with before is always a very good experience,” she said.

“I’d never been to a country so far away, and it

was awesome to expand my cultural awareness.”

Competing against teams from Canada and America, the Under 19 Australian National Women’s side achieved a bronze medal

Morris said one of the biggest takeaways from the tournament was being gracious no matter the outcome of games.

“Losing with grace [is important], I think a lot of people went over there with really high expectations being the Australian national team,” she said.

“Some girls on the team were a little disappointed with the result, but it felt good to get to know them and be able to keep everyone’s heads up.”
