High School graduate Daniel Crossley was awarded Dux last Wednesday.

Daniel topped the class of 2022 with an ATAR score of 95.55.

His subjects included were specialist maths, digital solutions, and physics.

Daniel, from Gatton, has accepted a position at the Queensland University of Technology to study software engineering.

Before ATAR scores were

released in December, there were four potential contenders for Dux, whose results were too close to call.

Travis Poole, Jordyn Sticklen, and Rahul Patel were named preliminary Dux alongside Daniel at the school’s awards night in November and were awarded Academic Awards last week.

Travis received an ATAR score of 94.7 and is heading to the University of Queensland to study engineering.

students will undertake a new subject this year which aims to help regenerate the Lockyer Valley.

The college developed its own science, ecology, and technology (SET) subject for the Year 9 cohort to engage in ecology on a local and global scale.

Sophia College Principal

Narelle Dobson said the ecology subject was developed to engage students in creative and innovative ways to help address bioaccumulation in local riverways.

“What is most exciting about this program is that it encourages inquiry-based learning and will help our students develop the knowledge and skills they need to create sustainable change,” she said.

Sophia College SET

Immanuel Ropeley Church celebrates turning a century

LOCKYER Valley Lutheran Parish is holding a combined service to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Immanuel Ropeley Church this Sunday February 5.

Pastor Jing Luan is the 13th pastor to service the church since its dedication on February 4, 1923.

“Before that there were two Lutheran churches in Ropeley area, the Zion Lutheran Church and the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, serviced by pastors from Plainland and Hatton Vale,” Pastor Luan said.

“Those two churches decided to come together and build a new church to cover Lutherans in the Ropeley and Tenthill area.”

Parish members from Laidley, Lockrose, Gatton and surrounds, as well as friends and family of the church are expected to gather for the celebration.

Pastor Luan has collected archives and photos from over the years for display at the celebration.

“Very sadly, we have another congregation in Mt Sylvia which is about to close down… churches in this area are not growing, they are shrinking,” Pastor Luan said.

“I don’t think we can have another 100 years celebration, or even 50.

“People will come to the church to remember the faith life their ancestors shared with their community and family.”

Pastor Luan said for Christians, the service was about worshipping God’s grace.

“That’s part of our lives in church worshipping and serving the community through church prayer and church activities,” he said.

VALLEY VIKINGS

On a hot day which drained stamina, the Vikings were impressive in taking down the Marburg Thunder at Cahill Park. After a nervy start, Viking batters did well, with Rogan Utz, Regan Hoger and Zeke Kugel all topping 50. The Thunder

Reisenlieter (3-18) and Captain Chris O’Brien (3-29) took away all momentum, leaving the visitors building win.

LOCKYER A GRADE. Forest Hill posted a light-on 122 against Helidon, with Reece Reiser impressive with 36. Cooper Hickmont with 3-21 was best with the ball. But Helidon simply blasted Forest Hill off the park in devastating fashion. Brandon Webb with an amazing 62 off 19 balls and equally talented Ray McBride on 32, chased down the score in 10 overs. There’s no doubting

Gatton Fordsdale continued their care of a brave Mulgowie. Batting

8-279, with Aaron O-Dea (92) and Jason Kleidon (49 n.o). Mulgowie batted out their overs and reached 156 with 9 wickets down. Matthew Taber scored a meritorious 36.

to three teams, although the others could still spring a surprise.

They also come for a rigorous workout.

“It’s the most aggressively strenuous sport there is, because of the continuous running,” Marsh said.

The club have played at the UQ courts since September 2003 and currently have 42 playing members, plus social and lifetime members.

“A few of the lifetime members still come down and come and watch,” Marsh said.

Moving out of town had its drawbacks, as school children couldn’t get to the courts easily after school.

“When we were playing in Gatton our club was four times the size, but once it moved out here we lost all of our juniors because they couldn’t walk to the courts after school,” Marsh said.

“We don’t have those young ones coming through like we used to.”

The club welcomes uni students occasionally and currently have some young lads taking up the racket.

“We have a group of young lads from 18 to 24 or something, that play cricket and they come and it’s great to have that younger feel and hopefully some of them will continue,” Marsh said.

Steve Marriott is a long time member.

“You can compete, you to meet new people,” he said.
