American Bald Eagles visit Virginia Beach

The bald eagle has long been seen by many as a symbol of courage, freedom, strength, and resilience. The bald eagle is featured on the great seal of the United States, passports, coins, the dollar bill, government buildings, and military uniforms among other official documents. For over 240 years, it has been

thought that the Bald Eagle was the national bird of the United States. It wasn’t official until December 24, 2024, when the President signed legislation making the bald eagle our national bird. According to “World Population Review”, Virginia has 1,100 breeding pairs of bald eagles as of 2024.

Winter - An Opportunity to Restore and Reconnect

My Grandparents kept copies of the Old Farmer’s Almanac throughout the house. I came to rely upon the magazine as I grew for everything from recipes to rain. I’d turn to it most often as winter approached, attempting to gauge when schools would be closed due to inclement weather.

I liked the idea of winter the almanac supported. It’s a dreadful time of dangerous ice, snow, and cold. But it’s also a period of rest or dormancy – what some call hibernation. And, in my view, that’s a necessary thing, especially today.

I learned in elementary school about the hibernation practices of various creatures that “slept” through the winter months. It was a fascinating subject but an inconceivable concept. Young as I was then, I could not imagine sleeping more than one night, let alone many weeks at a time. The Pennsylvania winters didn’t offer much warmth, but sledding, ice skating and snowball fighting seemed far more fun than spending the nights and days with only my dreams as company.

To hibernate seemed like a waste of time.

According to nationalgeographic.org, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, fish and at least one bird practice a form of hibernation – a state of lowered metabolism and slowed physiological functioning. It’s not sleep in the traditional sense, but it’s not wakefulness either.

Many cultures view winter as a sacred time of rest and recuperation – a necessary stage in a cycle of rebirth. There’s a mythology of people who once practiced a kind of extended winter sleep akin to hibernation. Some Native American tribes, like the Sioux, prepared for winter during the warmer months and circled inward when winter weather took root. I like this idea of winter hibernation, which is more of a matter of regeneration than a way to ignore time passing while avoiding the cold.

Most of us go through winter thinking about the future. We’re so focused on the time after the frigid temperatures that we fail to take stock of the faces around the fire. There’s a kind of shared angst about the shorter days. But there’s a sense of relief as well.

There’s pressure to be constantly active when daylight extends past dinner hour. My husband and I have found ourselves – and our neighbors -- doing yard work at 8 p.m. in October. We’re super productive during the months of daylight savings time; we’re ex-

hausted when it ends. We’re even a little giddy about trading the rake for the couch when the clock rolls back an hour.

I’ve come to enjoy the months of shortened days and darkness by 5 p.m. as I’ve grown older. When our boys were youngsters, we’d strive to finish dinner by 6, quickly manage the homework, then put on our pajamas and play games or watch television before bedtime at 9. Forced inside by the dark and the cold from November through March, we’d rely on each other for company and entertainment. We didn’t feel claustrophobic or constrained by the house that enveloped us during those winter months. There were moments when being walled in made a congested crowd. But, for most of the time, winter was a haven.

We go through life rapidly these days – occasionally slamming the brakes and only momentarily before speeding to the next stop. Warmth and daylight encourage our “always doing something” mindset. Perhaps we need a little cold weather protection from our modern-day demands to keep doing. Winter is a means to slow down – and can provide a much-needed respite from our fast-paced, busy lives if we allow it.

Eagles build huge nests on the top of tall trees, usually pine trees in our area. They usually nest near large bodies of water. Their nests are typically five to six feet in diameter. The female generally lays one to three eggs in a clutch. In our area, courtship usually begins in January and February, eggs are usually laid between January and late March, and hatching occurs between March and April. The chicks usually fledge at 10 to 12 weeks old between May and July.

The best times to observe bald eagles are 7 to 11 am or 3 to 5 pm. Right before sunset is also a good time.

Here are some fun facts about eagles. According to researchers, eagles generally mate for life, and they live a very long time, generally 25 to 40 years. Females are larger than males with wingspans up to eight feet. The bald eagle

is only found in North America. Eagles have extremely powerful vision, one of the strongest in the entire animal kingdom. They can see a fish up to a mile away as they swoop down to get their prey up to 100 miles an hour.

As a reminder, February is National Bird Feeding Month. It was created due to the limited resources and cold temperatures to find food.

February is also the month to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count hosted by the National Audubon Society. You can find more information by going to birdcount.org.

Lynnhaven Baseball at Trant Field

Providing a home for youth baseball, Trant Field has long served the Virginia Beach community by supplying a location for the making of friendships, learning of life lessons, and building of character that only youth sports are able to provide. Since its creation in 1962, Lynnhaven Baseball at Trant Field has been the ideal location for baseball enthusiasts to practice, organize community games, and to enjoy all that the sport entails. The field is kept in excellent condition yearround by volunteers, making it consistently available for those who wish to utilize it.

The land where Trant Field now resides was part of a 17 acre plot of land donated by Little Neck resident G. Trant in 1962 to the Little Neck Civic League on the condition that it be utilized for youth sports. The youth leagues that play on the field have been run by Lynnhaven Baseball since the

uses one of the fields as their home baseball facility, and paid over $50,000 in February of 2020 to fix the outfield fence, build new dugouts, and install new concrete pads. Additionally, servicemen and women from the Navy’s USS Arlington aided in the construction of new bleachers.

Over the decades since it was founded, Lynnhaven Baseball has had many players go on to have success at a high level. Just this past year, two players that were products of Lynnhaven Baseball, Daniel Hudson and Chris Taylor, became World Series champions as members of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Furthermore, according to Perfectgame.org, Lynnhaven Baseball also currently has six former players that are currently playing college ball. Jerry Barnes, Riley Decandido, and Payton Friske all play for Division I schools, while Jake Genzler, Cooper Angilly, and Ethan Hirschfeld play at the Division III level.

Today, anyone between the ages of 4 and 18 is allowed to play with Lynnhaven Baseball, with more than 800 kids playing during the Spring and Fall. In that time, they learn valuable life skills such as teamwork and good communication, as well as helping them socialize, make new friends, and get good exercise. Scam Alert: QR code on an unexpected package

An unexpected package from an unknown sender arrives in your name. You open it and find a note that says it’s a gift, but it doesn’t say who sent it. The note also says to scan a QR code to find out who sent it — or to get instructions on how to return it. Did someone really send you a gift? Or is it an attempt to steal your personal information?

If you know it’s really a gift, you can keep it. But know that the unexpected package could be a new twist on a brushing scam that could steal your personal information.

If you scan the QR code, it could take you to a phishing website that steals your personal information, like credit card numbers or usernames and passwords. It could also download malware

onto your phone and give hackers access to your device.

If you scanned the QR code and entered your credentials, like your username and password, into a website, change your password right away. Create a strong password that is hard to guess, and turn on two-factor authentication.

If you’re concerned someone has your personal information, get your free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com. Look for signs that someone is using your information, like accounts in your name you don’t recognize. (You can get a free credit report every week.)

Also review your credit card bills and bank account statements and look for transactions you

didn’t make. And consider taking other steps to protect your identity, like freezing your credit or putting a fraud alert on your credit report.

If you think someone stole your

identity, report it, and get a personal recovery plan at IdentityTheft.gov.

What else can you do to protect your personal information? Regularly update your computer software and your phone to get the latest security patches. And learn to recognize a phishing email or text message.

And what about the package? The law says you can keep it as a gift.

History of The Old Coast Guard Station

Prior to 1871 surviving a shipwreck along the Atlantic coast might depend on where you were. Most of the coast was desolate and unpopulated and offered little hope for rescue. Around major ports, however, increased ship traffic and vigilant coastal residents improved the likelihood of being rescued. The Massachusetts Humane Society was a volunteer service established in 1787 to rescue and assist shipwreck victims along the coast of that state. In the 1840s and 50s Congress haphazardly approved funding for a few unmanned “boathouses” that were constructed along the New York and New Jersey shorelines and a few along the Delmarva Peninsula as far south as Cape Charles. After the American Civil War several political “appointees” began working at these buildings, but for the most part they were unskilled and did little more than just collect their pay checks. In 1871, after a winter when unusually violent storms caused a major loss of life and property in that region, public outcry brought about

much needed changes. That year the United States Life Saving Service (U.S.L.S.S.) was formed under the leadership of Mr. Summer Kimball and the existing “boathouses” became station houses. The appointees were replaced with trained and dedicated life savers or “surfmen”.

A new district, District 6, was created extending from Cape Henry to Nags Head. Congress appropriated $100,000 to build and equip additional stations in the new district as well as along the coast of Maine. In 1874 three new life saving stations were constructed in Virginia: at Cape Henry, Dam Neck Mills, and False Cape. Four years later Station #2 was erected

in the Seatack area of the city. The rest of the stations in District 6 were also completed that same year. The Seatack station, later called the Virginia Beach station after the town was formed in 1908) is believed to be the first permanent structure in the city. In 1903 that building was moved across Atlantic Avenue where it became the city’s first post office, and the current building was built in its place. In 1915 the U.S.L.S.S. became the United States Coast Guard and continued to use the station until it was decommissioned in 1969. In 1981 the old station was saved from the wrecking ball and declared an historic landmark. Located on Atlantic

Avenue at the end of 24th Street, the building is now the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum and is dwarfed by the surrounding hotels. It is said that big things come in small packages and considering the amount of history associated with that little building it must be true.

New Inspection Stickers Starting This Year

As the calendar year transitioned from 2024 to 2025, vehicles in Virginia that have successfully completed their safety inspections will be issued a new safety inspection sticker. This sticker, which introduces the color green for the first time, features several modifications compared to earlier versions. These alterations aim to enhance the sticker’s resistance to counterfeiting.

The updated sticker features a holographic representation of the state seal along with an image of the dogwood flower. Both designs are challenging for counterfeiters to replicate effectively. Additionally, this sticker introduces two QR codes for the first time. The larger QR code links to the Virginia State Police Safety Division webpage, while the smaller one serves administrative functions. The expiration month is displayed on a white background, and the expira-

tion year is superimposed over the dogwood image.

“We want Virginians to have confidence that when they see an inspection sticker on a vehicle that the vehicle has been truly inspected by a qualified professional, and that vehicle is, in fact, safe to be out on the road,” said Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Hanley, Interim Superintendent of Virginia State Police. “These new features add an additional layer of security to ensure criminals are not circumventing the safety inspection system.”

The inspection stickers affixed to vehicles this year, which will expire in 2026, will be green. Stickers set to expire in 2027 will be blue. For 2028 and 2029, the colors of the stickers will be red for 2028 and yellow for 2029.

Is there a grace period for inpection sticker renewal?

There is no grace period according to the Virginia State Police. You may have a safety inspection performed on your vehicle regardless of what state it is registered in. It is recommended that you have the safety inspection performed before registering the vehicle in Virginia.

The Therapeutic Benefits of Spirituality

In our post-pandemic, social-media saturated society we have seen a record rise in anxiety, depression, suicidality and stress-related illness. Spirituality, or a sense of a living relationship to a higher power (God, Nature, Spirit, Universe, Loving Force) is now considered a protective factor against mental illness/substance abuse and a mitigator of the impact of stress. It provides a sense of purpose and hope that is critical to emotional well-being. It enhances our ability to tolerate circumstances in our lives that cannot be readily understood. It promotes peace-making and forgiveness, and is an antidote to bitterness, a common precursor to depression.   Consider the benefits of exploring one’s spirituality:

• A belief in a higher purpose provides guidelines for living and a broader view of one’s life.

• Spirituality opens us up to a connectedness with others, nature, art, the world

• The tools of spirituality provide ritual, structure and predictability, which help us feel centered.

• The practice of spirituality promotes compassion, forgiveness, gratitude and acceptance, qualities which mitigate symptoms of depression and anxiety.

• Exploring one’s spirituality enhances a stronger sense of self and intentionality.

• The practice of spirituality may involve meditation, mindfulness and self-reflection, ways to quiet our minds and fortify ourselves against thoughts that lead to anxiety and depression. If you are someone who has never given much thought to the realm of the spiritual, here are some steps to get you started:

1. Be open and curious. What people and practices do you see around you that resonate with you? Find a book or a podcast that allows you to expand your understanding of yourself and others.

2. Spend time in self-reflection. Be a non-judgmental observer of yourself, your thoughts and your feelings. When do you feel most at ease? When do you feel most authentically yourself? When do you feel most hopeful? When do you feel most content? What are the circumstances and/or people

that promote these feelings?

3. Spend some time in nature. Find a park, a beach, a trail, a garden for a quiet stroll or bike ride.

4. Volunteer your time in service to something or someone else. Assist at a food pantry. Tutor a child. Foster an animal. Grow a garden. Cook a meal or pick flowers for a neighbor.

5. Carve out time for a daily centering practice that gives you space to be still (journaling, walking, listening to music, creating something).

6. Find someone who seems to possess an inner wisdom. Allow them (wittingly or not) to guide you in going deeper and finding

new perspectives.

Our world and our culture promote many ideas and practices that trigger anxiety and depression. Consider developing your spirituality as a way to bring balance and perspective and to fortify you and your emotional well-being.

New year, new chance to think about ways to protect yourself from identity theft. What’s one way? Freeze your credit. You don’t have to wait for your Social Security number or other information to be exposed in a data breach — or misused by an identity thief — to benefit from a credit freeze.

Here’s how a credit freeze can protect you: it stops lenders from getting into your credit report. Because lenders usually won’t give you credit if they can’t review your credit report, a freeze can help stop would-be identity thieves from opening new accounts in your name.

Some more things to know:

• Anyone can place a credit freeze, they’re free to place and lift, and they don’t affect your credit score.

• To place a credit freeze, contact all three credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion

• Credit freezes last until you lift them. So if someone needs

US Foods CHEF’STORE has opened its first location in Virginia Beach, and it’s second in Hampton Roads.

Founded in Oregon City, Oregon and opened in 1955, CHEF’STORE was originally under the name United Grocers Cash & Carry. Currently, it can be found in 14 states, with over 90 locations nationally. Whether it’s too many steps, the increasing costs and demands of homeownership or being too far from medical attention, family, & friends. Most seniors will have to make the decision in later years. What do I do? Where do I go?

Let’s address the problem “what do I do” first. We need to discuss the personal situation the client is facing.  We look at:

Finances: Can you afford to stay in your home? Is your current retirement or social security income able to keep up with the escalating cost of homeownership? The increasing cost of real estate taxes, insurance, and maintenance.  Will this situation continue, or is it going to change? Also, consider the escalating cost of health care. Will this change your financial position? Perhaps you are keeping up, but it is slowly eating away at your savings.

Alternatives to selling the home

outright: There are options for producing income streams to help facilitate these expenses, like reverse mortgages, where you can get a single lump sum or monthly payments that do not count as income against your Supplement Security Income.

More commonly, the home equity lines of credit (HELOC), where you can draw down the money as needed, but unlike the reverse mortgage, you will need to make monthly payments on the money borrowed, so we can recommend investing the HELOC into a rental property to produce an income stream to offset the payment. This rental could also be for a child or grandchild. Maybe near the university they are planning to attend.

Another one of the not-so-common options is the “life estate.”

Where you can get all the tax advantages of selling the property but get to remain in possession

of it for the duration of your life. This is used when selling property to your family or friends.

And there is always the 1031 Exchange, which is another seminar altogether. It is basically a way to invest in one rental property while using the proceeds of funds from the sale of another.

Your Health: Are you still able to climb the stairs, or do you need a more handicap-friendly or wheelchair-accessible residence? Are you physically able to keep up with the yard, lawn, & maintenance of the older single-family home? Are you self-sufficient and able to provide daily meals, medications, & hygiene? Can you still look after the pets?

Location: Do you want to be closer to family or friends, or perhaps you may want to move to a lower maintenance condominium community and spend your afternoons on the golf course or playing pickleball with your friends? May-

be you want a newer and maybe smaller home? You may want to get out of the big neighborhood or 4-bedroom home and downsize.

Lifestyle: You may want a “Lock it & Leave it” lifestyle! By moving into a condo or townhome, you can have more freedom to travel and not have to worry about weekly exterior maintenance or chores of the past. You may want to plan ahead and take advantage of the recent change in the tax laws and “cash out” of your current home so it supports your new lifestyle and doesn’t hamper it. Take that trip to Europe that you have always wanted and put off. You have worked hard and saved your whole life; this is not the time to be “house poor”.

Your current home may very well be the biggest investment you have ever made in your life, and it could also be the most valuable asset you have, so be cautious and consider all your options so that you can make an informed & educated decision that is best for your personal situation.

increase in assessments. The assessment reflects an estimate of the sale price a property could achieve if sold during the assessment period. Residential neighborhoods experience varying rates of appreciation and depreciation, and commercial properties also respond differently to market trends. Typically, during a fiscal year reassessment, property values may increase, decrease, or remain stable due to various internal and external factors affecting them.

Tax Rates

As of the latest figures, the real estate tax rate in Virginia Beach is $0.97 per $100 of assessed value. This means if your home is assessed at $300,000, your annual property tax would be approximately $2,910. It’s essential to note

Treatment options for dogs and cats with arthritis

Arthritis is a common problem in dogs and cats, especially as they age. There are several

treatment options available to help manage arthritis symptoms and improve the quality of life for your pets.

NSAIDs: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the first-line pain management option for dogs with arthritis. These drugs have been shown to be effective in managing osteoarthritis in dogs. However, it is important to note that not all NSAIDs work the same way in all dogs, so it may be necessary to try different products to find the one that works best for your pet. Routine monitoring of the pet’s kidney and liver function is important.

Unfortunately, long-term use of NSAIDs in cats is not currently considered safe.

Amantadine: Better known by its brand name, Symmetrel®, amantadine hydrochloride is a medication used for the treatment of pain. It antagonizes i.e. inhibits N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the nervous system. These receptors normally transmit pain signals. By temporarily deactivating the NMDA receptors, amantadine can prevent the pain signals generated in the body from reaching the brain. If the brain never gets the pain signal, it doesn’t perceive the pain.

Amantadine is especially helpful in cases of chronic pain, such as moderate to severe arthritis in dogs. In these cases, repeated stimulation of pain pathways in the spinal cord and brain can cause harmful changes in the

nervous system. The end result is that the nervous system becomes hypersensitive to painful stimuli. This type of chronic pain stimulation can even lead to the nervous system interpreting non-painful stimuli (i.e. cold, light touch, or brushing) as painful. Amantadine can help “reset” that sensitivity to more normal levels. I tend to reach for it in patients whose chronic pain has become worse over time without an obvious cause for the worsening.

A study in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine compared the effectiveness of an NSAID alone with the combination of an NSAID and amantadine in dogs with arthritis. The researchers found that dogs given both medications together engaged in significantly more physical activity. This suggests that the combination of both medications managed their pain better than using an NSAID alone.

Joint Injections: Joint injections with hyaluronic acid (HA) or steroids can provide relief for dogs and cats with arthritis. HA injections are believed to alter the metabolism of naturally occurring HA while decreasing arthritis symptoms. We have seen quite a bit of success with this in our practice.

Steroid injections: Steroids are effective in reducing inflammation and pain in the joint. However, repeated steroid injections can be detrimental to cartilage. We recommend reserving steroid injections as a last resort for “endstage” disease when there is little to no cartilage remaining.

Solensia for Cats: Solensia is a newer treatment specifically designed to manage arthritic pain in cats. It is a monthly injection administered by your veterinarian that inhibits nerve growth factor (NGF), which causes pain originating within the spinal cord.

Solensia is a targeted treatment specifically for cats in pain due to arthritis, and it is less likely to cause gastrointestinal side effects and renal disease often seen with traditional NSAIDs or corticosteroids.

Overall, it is important to work with your veterinarian to determine the best treatment options for your pet’s arthritis, as every animal is different and may respond differently to different treatments. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight and providing moderate exercise can also help manage arthritis symptoms in dogs and cats.

Class 4 laser therapy: also known as cold laser therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses a low-power laser to stimulate tissue repair and reduce inflammation and pain. The laser emits light energy that penetrates deep into the tissues, causing a cascade of physiological responses that promote healing.

The endorphin release triggered by laser therapy can help to reduce pain and improve mood in pets. Vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels, increases blood flow to the affected area, bringing in oxygen and nutrients to support the healing process. Muscle relaxation can help to alleviate tension and spasms, improving mobility and reducing pain.

Overall, laser therapy can be an effective treatment for a range of conditions in pets, including arthritis, intervertebral disc disease, post-operative pain and inflammation, and soft tissue injuries. By reducing pain and inflammation and promoting faster healing, laser therapy can help to improve your pet’s quality of life and support their recovery. Most importantly it is extremely safe! We typically begin treatment twice a week in your home and decrease the frequency of the treatments to biweekly or monthly depending on the patient’s response.

Once we do a complete orthopedic and physical exam a treatment plan can be created tailored to the individual pet. Pain management continues to evolve and includes more safe and effective treatments to improve your aging pets happiness and quality of life.

and electrical can still command high prices. On the other hand, those that have not been updated may sell for less. Similarly, homes with historical or architectural significance often are highly valued, as they offer unique features and character.

In addition to the condition of the home, the age of the neighborhood can also impact its value. Neighborhoods that are undergoing gentrification can see rapid increases in home values, as buyers assess the potential for capital appreciation.
